Assuming that she wasn't already there, Leskni heads towards the Drow quarters.
If she arrives in time "What just happened? Where are you going?"
DM Shane Saturday July 2nd, 2016 8:14:03 PM
prior post aside I'm putting Leskni, Owen and Atlas at the scene right now.
Eclyndryl turns to face the approaching party members. She looks ready to bolt for it, till she sees Leskni, she then relaxes a bit. You notice she has tears in her eyes and fury in her demeanor. She takes a moment to get control of herself, taking several deep breaths. She points to the railing where the person was thrown off... That taudl d' in'loil shu killed my cousin and took his place as my guard, he was the one who attacked you, I was suspicious earlier, so I questioned him, he attacked my family, so I killed him, I do not know for what reason this was done to us, but it has..I cannot proceed with negotiations at this time. I must get back to my people and inform my Family of my cousins death.
Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 12/12/10; HP: 26/26; CMD: 15 Saturday July 2nd, 2016 9:44:58 PM
Owen knows Woldian Below, and he'd like to know what "taudl d' in'loil shu" means.... if it isn't too vulgar.
Seeing Eclyndryl visibly relax when Leskni approaches, Owen steps back and lets the young wemic take charge. In passing, he murmurs to her in Tauric: Highlight to display spoiler: {"If we can get her to stay through tomorrow morning she'll probably calm down some, and Armand should be able to ask questions of the body. She might want to hear those answers...."}
If any other party members enter, he gestures at them to keep back.

Perhaps the entire attack was staged to get you to leave like this, to get you to a place where you can be ambushed and your deaths blamed on us surface dwellers.
May I suggest that you stay here tonight and leave in the morning? Then we can arrange an escort to make sure that you at least get back closer to your lands safely"
Note that Leskni is fairly sincere in that. This whole thing still smells very strange to her and, until she is more sure what is going on, she doesn't think the Drow are safe leaving.

Carver, when he arrives at Gaston's room, "You have him covered and it's safe for me to head to the top, or do you want me to stay here and back you up?" He asks whomever is there already when he gets there.
Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 41/41 CMD 16 Character Sheet Sunday July 3rd, 2016 6:13:44 PM
Well to repeat...(OOC: What is the lighting situation in the tree at night, is there the equivalent of street lights? How are we seeing what we're seeing? If there are no lights Armand will cast light on the head of the glaive.)
And...since I guess I'm not in the Tavern, Could you please tell us where each of us are Shane? Several of us had stated we were in various locations previously. If we are not reasonably close to the Tavern, given the size of the Tree would we have even heard the screams?
DM shane: The tree has amassed a decent suppy of Continual flame objects. Most folk put them up at night to light the ways. about 20% less bright than streetlights but they light the way quite well.
I am putting Carver, Mack Armand and 'Osul on the bottom floor watching Gaston. and yes you can hear the screams, he fell right past your dwelling.
Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 41/41 CMD 16 Character Sheet Sunday July 3rd, 2016 9:34:02 PM "Got in Himmel.". Armand is awake enough to recognize the effect of the scream as someone falling a good distance.
Armand leaps up and races to the stairs. (Wearing +1 chain shirt since it's deemed we are in a danger/guard situation, so no fatigue). He sees Carver near Gaston's quarters. "Carver stay with Gaston, better just keep him in his room and don't let him come out. I'm going to go downstairs and see who fell. Yell loudly if anything more comes down."
Armand runs down the stairs.
'Osul(Graham) AC:11 (T:11, FF:10), CMD:15, HP:32/32 Monday July 4th, 2016 12:56:24 AM "Armand, I'll see what's left to do down there." 'Osul makes for the ground with Armand in the slim chance a Stabilize could be of use.

If so keep him inside until we've got things under control, it'll be safer. If not What's wrong with him, let me see him, I want to make sure it's not similar to what's going on out side."
Carver becomes afraid Gaston is some how involved......
Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18), CMD: 20; HP 52/52 Character Sheet Monday July 4th, 2016 3:20:35 PM
Atlas nods, "That's what I would have done as well, so you'll face no quarrel with me on this matter. However, I would suggest you heed Leskni's words and stay the night. We can also have Armand talk to the dead and learn more if you need in the morning. It could help save your family."
DM Shane Monday July 4th, 2016 5:52:30 PM I'm not the one you should be following Eclyndryl says after giving Leskni a look that ranges from incredulous to affectionate, she points down and toward where Gaston resides. We are strangers here, it is best you see things with your own eyes. she then motions for her companions to follow her as she makes her way down to the lower levels.
'Osul and Armand both rush to the base of the tree and with a bit of searching find Jryral Hal the trapper lying broken with his head at an unnatural angle in a heap on the ground. Without getting too graphic, its pretty obvious that he is far past the point where a Stabilize spell would do any good. if the fall would have been 200' shorter, maybe but not from that height.

Armand casts Detect Magic and looks over the trappers remains carefully. Perception 7 (d20+4). "The lighting here is terrible." Armand continues to look the body over with detect magic going.
"'Osul, I don't think there's anything you can do here. Head back up to Carver and let him know what's going on. I'll be up as soon as I can finish looking him over with detect magic, and find a guard or someone to stand watch over the body. I don't want it disturbed."

Even then it is hard to take him seriously, but for the sake of of the Tree it is best to do so." Atlas ends with a look of disgust on his face, like just saying the man's name causes him physical pain.

Gastons servant James answers the door, rubbing sleep from his eyes still in his bed clothes. Yes, May I help you? he intones in a sleep thick voice.
Armands detect magic spell lights up with a pretty serious glow. Jyral's hat shows a faint illusion aura. the boots a faint transmutation aura as does a silver circlet he was wearing beneath the hat, the headband though has a moderate transmutation aura. The bag at his side puts forth a moderate conjuration aura, His scimitar a faint evocation aura and a moderate conjuration aura. his clothes put forth a faint abjutation aura and a moderate illusion aura. pretty serious magic, this guy was pimping. more study is needed.
there is no need to call for guards, they start arriving, along with Miles, at the spot where Jyral lay. Miles speaks What in the sam hill happened here?
still walking Eclyndryl talks back over her shoulder. He was an assassin in disguise, he killed my cousin and took his place, he wasn't acting right and when he dodged out on the detect magic spell I grew suspicious. I had my captain drug his wine and while he slept I saw his true visage. we then dumped him over the side. I will not stay here, he has other agents about. but if you wish to know more, follow him clandestinely and you will learn. on the night of the morrow. Or follow not, it makes no difference to me. she stops and turns to Leskni, genuine pain beyond the loss of her cousin colors her face. ussta abbil, my trusted friend, please, when you see the truth, remember business is business, If I would have known then what I know now.... she squeezes you hand, then turns and walks off.

Armand calls out to 'Osul as he prepares to leave. "'Oslu, I think we need Owen down here. Jyral is pretty heavily decked out in magic."
He then turns to Miles. "I'm not sure myself Miles. But I think Jaryl here either fell, was shoved, or tossed off the tree. I heard a long scream. I'd say he had to have fallen from maybe the Tavern level. I'd like to have a guard placed on him. Come the morning I can try to ask him 2 questions. The others are still up in the tree, split between Gaston's group and the Drow."
Armand continues to study the items. He will try to identify the hat. Spellcraft 19, (d20+4).
DM Shane. The Drow are half way down the tree to the lower level as of this last post. It looks like they are going to leave using one of the back ways. passing as far from Gastons room as possible.
Leskni (Paul Jackson) AC: 15/14/11; HP 35/35; CMD: 16 Character Sheet Wednesday July 6th, 2016 5:14:20 PM
Asks Eclyndryl if she can speak privately with her for a second. Assuming the answer is yes:
"I have access to a spell that would let us communicate. If I cast it when you are sleeping, and you are willing, it will bring your spirit to me so that we can talk. You MUST be willing, But, in order for me to even cast it, I must have a token of yours. A bit of hair, a prized possession. Are you willing to give me such, give me permission to cast this, and tell me what time you are most likely to be asleep? I give you my word to not use that token for any other purpose nor to tell anybody else that I have that token"
Note that all of the above is quite sincere. No ulterior motive, just wants to be in a position where contact is at least a possibility.

Atlas turns to Eclyndryl and Leskni, "It doesn't have to be goodbye, I wouldn't mind getting out for a walk and escorting you back and helping solve any mystery that might be outstanding. However, I do think it best if we talk to the dead guy first though."

'Osul catches up with Eclyandryls party and gets up dated on the what's happening with them.
Armand pretty easily recognizes the hat to be a hat of disguise, sewn inside the headband is an inscription that says "Illusion is needed to disguise the emptiness within" it is a balmorial bonnet , black with a red band around the base.

I know I'm not the only one monitoring Gaston, but I feel like I'm the only one where I'm at. If someone else is near, I let them know that Gaston looks like he may be heading somewhere. If no one is close by, I quietly let the ants know, and ask them to pass the message on if they get the chance.
I get ready to follow Gaston (clandestinely if possible). If he DOES spot me, I try to act as though I just stumbled upon him, and tag along for fun.

After Gaston's rant Armand speaks. "Well that was to be expected. I left Jyrial's body below under guard to make sure no one disturbs it. He has quite the supply of magic items. I'm not sure of what the laws are regarding 'spoils of war' as Jyrial was certainly murdered by the Drow Eclyndryl. So I'm not sure who would claim Jyrial's body and belongings or if he has a family. I asked Miles but he either did not hear me or doesn't know. Do any of you have any idea as to the legal ramifications of claiming Jyrial's body?"
Armand looks around. "In any case there's not much more we can do right now. If anyone wishes to remain up and about I'd suggest keeping an eye on Jryial's body. No telling if someone may try to go through it."

Carver looks over Leskni's shoulder while she is trying to identify the magic or possibly magic items and gives her his own thoughts on them.... (aid another) (success on all 3 aids so +2 to each of her rolls)
Sense Motive on Gaston as he has his outburst.... (sense motive 21) He has proven untrustworthy before, this would not be too much of a surprise if he continued in his normal actions.

Spellcheck 23 for Leskni the sword is a scimitar of Drow bane +1
Spellcheck 25 on bag did I say bag? no it's a Handy Haversack, that just seems to fold neatly into its own little bag when not in use carrying other things.
Spellcheck 36 on clothes, as you study them they begin to morph into a fine suit of Chainmail, +2 and glammered by the smell of it.
Dungarth, who with the rest of the town has shown up for the drama, speaks up. Nay, Armand, he twas a stranger here, I'd only met him a day or so ago before I "innerduced" him to ya, and I'd been asking around the other traders who come by here...none have ever heard of him either.
Carver perhaps it's just that you don't like Gaston, but to you his little tirade sounds well rehearsed and for being so mad he's not "foaming at the mouth" like he usually does when irate.
Macks ants march on, dedicated to their queen, they take little interest in the lives and opinions of things larger than they. Mack watches Gaston disrobe get back in bed and snuff the light.
Leskni (Paul Jackson) AC: 15/14/11; HP 35/35; CMD: 16 Character Sheet Saturday July 9th, 2016 1:53:31 PM "I don't think that forceably restraining the Drow is a good idea. And by the time the Powers That Be within the Tree make it they'll be long gone"
"I'd like to speak to the plants in both Gastons and the Drows quarters. If you can get Gaston and his men out of his quarters I can go in there and speak to the plants without their knowledge. Otherwise, we'd have to get the plants out so I can speak to both sets of plants simultaneously"
OOC: It lasts 5 minutes and I only get 1 a day. So, the plants would need to be together when I cast the spell.
OOC: Not at all sure how much you want to roleplay that spell.. Basic question is what happened inside that was strange. People killed, people coming in through window, etc.

Owen frowns a bit. Leskni, it would appear that they have just killed a man. We know from hearsay that this guy replaced one of their guards, but I don't plan to trust the Drow to be truthful. We've got some spells that can help us out. Let's talk to whoever we need to about how to restrain Gaston and Eclyndryl. We can talk to the dead man and your plants to learn more about what happened, but for now we need to keep the killers locked up.

You know how angry he got at the meeting when we spoke against him? Well, he's trying to act that angry right now, but his face just won't reach that lovely puce color he achieved that night. And, remember this, how far away was he when those elementals came fling down from above. He almost yelled out DROW! even before they came down to attack. And remember what the last one said to our friend before it returned to the other planes.... We were sent to attack but NOT kill you. I thought that weird at the time, but now with 2 + 2 equaling 4, I think it adds up. So, do I play dumb or do I crash in and confront him?"
DM Shane Monday July 11th, 2016 10:02:04 PM Leskni wastes no time gathering the plants from the drows rooms, grumpily James hands you the plants from their room, mumbling something about his lot in life, cursed adventurers, and his prima donna charge.
When you speak with plants, they are at first a bit miffed because you did not water them, but come forth with some of the information you seek. Jyrial was indeed in the Drows room, and while to a plant all animals look the same, the Ivy did notice that he changed from black to tan few times after coming and going through the window. the ones in the other drow rooms, merely confirm that Eclyandryl and her other guards entered and exited their rooms through the door at appropriate times. The ones in Gastons quarters, have nothing more to add besides confirmation that gastons party entered and exited as per usual. The day lily, did add that it really liked the pheromones coming off his rosewater perfume.
Jyrials pockets yield very little of value, a few silver pieces, a ball of string, a pipe and a pouch of tobacco. the other holds a small clasp knife and a handkerchief. the Haversack though has 4000gp and two vials labeled "stealth" and "oil of Tagget"
Miles, listens to the party discuss the ordeal, while standing over the corpse of Jyrial. he nods sagely, and when asked about the loot, shrugs. " it's pretty obvious that his royal horses butt, did all this to try and set you all up. That means he probably isn't going to pay you. I don't see anything wrong with you taking this guys loot as payment. he chuckles, I don't think Gaston is going to come forward and claim any of it.. He sobers a bit, then adds. after he leaves, go talk to Lorifir, the boyer, up on the third level, maybe you need to follow Gaston a bit and see what's going on....you may be able to catch him up to some more no good

Turning to the rest of the Group, "Well, we have Mack on Gaston, but if something goes awry then he might need backup. I'm not equipped to sneak about, but I'd be willing to hang back a bit and be available if needed."

Let's do the same thing to Gaston that he purportedly did to the drow. I'll use Disguise Self, Mack can sneak around nearby, and one other party member can use the Hat of Disguise. It needs to be someone Gaston doesn't know too well, so he won't recognize your voice. Let's get Ciyradyl to ask where they are going, then have somebody remark that two travelers are going the same way."
"Keep in mind, though, that whoever is using the Hat of Disguise will have to keep refreshing their disguise every ten minutes. Some stealth might be useful, there."

Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 41/41 CMD 16 Character Sheet Tuesday July 12th, 2016 7:57:40 PM

As Miles said, our best course may be to follow Gaston and see what he is up to. Then we can decide on the next best course of action."
Armand thinks to himself, 'Now I have to good cop within the group.'
Out loud he states, "I'd still like to know the legal aspects of negotiators while at the Tree. Do they have immunity? Is there some sort of court here that hands out sentences like banishment from a zone around the tree? It's all terribly murky and I'm not politically inclined."
DM Shane Tuesday July 12th, 2016 9:15:05 PM
the headband it +2 worth of charismatic goodness.
Miles shrugs, "to be honest, it's never came up. This community is so small that minor crimes like theft are taken care of by either shunning or corporeal punishments. When killing has happend, it's usually as part of an attack on the tree, they usually get what's coming to them then. If you can get the Drow to come back to the tree, we will have a counsel meeting, to determine if they can be allowed back to the tree or not. We have no prison here, and while we could stage an execution, we frown on that here. Cities tend to frown on us killing their people, even though they came out here to start trouble."

Finally, the events of the night come to a close and everybody but Mack all gets to sleep. A rooster crows around daylight, but everybody ignores it and continue snoozing. Leskni rises around 7:15 and starts getting herself together for the day.
Around 7:30 James comes out of the residence to go get the horses ready to the trip, only to receive a full bucket load of pig poop and a pop knot from the bucket hitting him. It knocks him down and must have hurt because he rolls around for few minutes before even realizing he's covered in feces. when he finally does realize it he shakes himself distastefully, looks around at the mess in exasperation...finally gets control of himself and takes off his shirt. He walks over to one of the trees cisterns, draws up a bucket and begins to wash himself off. Once semi clean and shivering in the cool morning air he takes another bucket of water and cleans up the mess by the front door. after that he sticks his head inside and speaks for a moment. a fresh pair of pants are handed out and he ducks behind the house with another bucket of water. He exits a few minutes later carrying the soiled pants and the bucket. He then resumes rounding up the horses.
by about 9:30 Gastons group is ready to go and leave the tree with nary a word.
as soon as they are gone, Lorifir sends a boy down to fetch the heros for a meeting at the Tree top Tavern.
Once everyone has arrived he, along with the Hedge wizard and part time Apothecary Ryan Mistbender get straight to the point.
Lorifir speaks, That son of a diseased toad Gaston is up to no good. I can feel it. I think you all can as well. I think you should follow him, clandestinely, and spy upon him. I've been talking to Ryan here and he agrees. Ryan?
Ryan: Indeed my friend, too may things do not add up, not the least of which was his castigation of your performance. To my mind he seems to be playing at something, and I'd like to find out what it is before it begins to stink. To that end I've made up a few things that may help you if you decide to follow him.
he sets a case upon the table and begins pulling vials out of it. once the table is full of glassware he speaks again.
I have here for each of you, 5 Elixirs of hiding and 1 Fly potion apiece. I think that with these things and the horses and wagon that Lorifir has for you, you should be able to track him with very little problem.

Remember I've seen him up close when he was really mad, when we testified to his lack of character to the Chancers Group. He was fit enough to fry eggs on his forehead. Yesterday he was only pretending to that irritated. The actual heat of anger was missing from his performance. An obvious tell to those who know him. On another point, while I appreciate the elixirs, the one that aids hiding won't really assist me at all, but the flying could be fun..... "

Atlas wakes, well rested after a very long night. As usual, he goes through his monkish morning routine. On his way to breakfast, he thumps sleepy Owen's bed and gets him up in time for some food.
Atlas munches his fourth strip of bacon and listens intently to Lorifir and Ryan. He nods and agrees with Leski, Carver, and Mack that following this miscreant is the best thing to do. But he chuckles and agrees with Carver about the elixer of hiding.
"If I could drink all five at once and have them stack, maybe it would make me sneaky," he says. "But like Carver says, it is the Fly that is the more useful brew. Carver and I have to be way in the back, elixer or no to stay unseen. And when if we need to advance quickly, then we swallow the Fly potions and scoot forward."
"Now, I've been thinking about how to know when it is time for Carver and me to advance. Does anybody have a horn or a whistle? Or, here's a trick I heard once -- Mack is pretty sneaky, so he'll be up front. Let him cast a Light spell on a coin, and give it to me or Carver. When it is time for us to go forward, Mack casts Light again. You can only have one Light spell active at a time, so the first Light spell goes out. Even if we are a mile away, when the Light goes out, we know it is time to fly!"
[OOC: Arguably, this is a good way to simulate quantum signalling with magic to enable faster-than-light communication in the Wold, but you did not hear that from me!]
Then Armand mentions that he wants to speak with the corpse. "Well, padre," says Atlas, "Go for it, if it does not delay us too much!"

When Ryan offers the potions, he says "Many thanks. I'm not nearly as sneaky as Mack, so this will be a great help."
Then Armand brings up his questions. "I've not talked with corpses, but I'll suggest that we need to be careful with our wording. And confirmation of what we think we know would be nice. How about 'Who sent you?' and 'What was your mission?'?"

Armand after first talking to his companions with regard to what should be asked Jyrial, contemplates the task. He sends a boy to fetch Miles as Armand would like him there for the questioning. Armand addresses any of the companions that will be joining him in his task. "Leskni's questions would certainly be helpfully but I doubt Gaston would be telling his underlings his plans. As Armand casts is spell, all in the room get the sense that something is in there with them. Images not seen but some how sensed on a sub conscious level float just behind awareness. The corpse twitches, it's eyes open and its head turns to look at Armand. the body speaks.

Owen finds that speaking corpses are weird and kind of spooky.
'Osul finds the party just as the corpse is speaking it's last.
Mack realizes the bone headedness of trying to sneak up on things much faster than him and going away from him. He wonders why he made such a move...perhaps the lack of sleep for the last 2 days has caught up with him?
Carver in True Agent's of the Fist fashion thinks tactically, even as an assassins corpse gibbers answers to Armands questions.

Armand frowns. "Does anyone know what Guild Jyrial belonged to? Or who this Norman Borestein is, or where he is?" He shakes his head. "I'm afraid this has only garnered us more questions."
He looks around to those assembled (OCC who from the Tree is gathered to hear what the corpse said?) "At the very least we now have proof that someone was deliberately scheming to sabotage the reputation of the Tree and ourselves. We may have to travel to Plateau City to straighten this all out. In any case I trust that you" looks toward those from the tree gathered "could hopefully intern Jyrial's body?"
Armand looks to Atlas "Next time we greet Gaston I think we should play bad cop, worse cop. In any case lets get after the miscreant."
Armand picks up his traveling gear and some iron rations for the trip. "I'll drive the wagon, unless someone actually has professional skill in that? Mack, I suggest you make a pile of the gear and try to get some rest. Who here can track? Who can move forward faster than the wagon? 'Osul how long can you maintain the shape of another creature? Can you fly ahead and try to see the direction Gaston is going?"
Once we get all that straightened out...."Yah" Armand snaps the reins on the horses rear.

Gee I wonder who could have a grudge that big to lose money over.... Oh, wait there's only one moron I know who has that much money and ego to do anything like this.... Can anyone else come up with another name than the fool I'm thinking of?" As to bad cop, worse cop.. I plan on being irritated cop with a goal of making Gaston look stupid yet again. I guess we need to find this middleman as he could know who actually did the hiring....

Owen is pretty sure he's heard of the guild hall called Spike. And probably this Norman Borestein fellow, too. Knowledge (Local): 28, 26.
He asks the group, "Should chase down Gaston or pursue this lead? I myself am more inclined to do the latter."

Atlas shakes his head in frustration. "Look, we all know it was Gaston. However, what good does proving it do? It is not like the people of the Tree are going to do anything, and they're not going to punish him in Plateau City, so there's no result. It's just a game to him and I'm not playing it. Let's find him, tell him we know what he did, and that he's not allowed to come back to the Tree.
"I just don't see a lot of opportunity here to 'do good', so the best thing in my opinion is to just end it before we end up killing the idiot."
Atlas stands up, stretches a little, and waits to see who chimes in. He clearly isn't in the mindset to play games, but is ready to jump into the wagon with Armand to put an end to this one. "Armand, I'll take worse cop, just lead the way!"

I still think that they know more than they told us and that we should follow their suggestion. With luck, he'll provide us with proof that we can use against him.
So, I'm definitely voting for following Gaston"
'Osul(Graham) AC:11 (T:11, FF:10), CMD:15, HP:32/32 Wednesday July 27th, 2016 7:39:38 AM "The League will likely know who Norman is, even if we don't. I recommend heading to Plateau City (that was where they were coming from, and a Guild Hall, yes?), and if we can get there ahead of Gaston -- all the better to gather enough d... evidence to interest the locals and wipe the smirk off Gaston's face when he catches up! Going after him is precisely what everyone expects, and what we've actually been told to do. This is less expected."
