Along Came A Spider
The Proposal

DM Rob - "This part of the tale is familiar to me."
Monday September 12th, 2016 8:03:36 AM

The party make the deal with the thieves, who seem relieved their offer was accepted. Atlas's stern glare to the thieves is contrasted by Owen's warm smile. The gold from Helfanyl has barely hit an outstretched palm before the thieves make themselves scarce.

The party are torn as to whether to venture to Plateau City or not, but the majority are of the opinion that the group should stay by the Tree.

The next few weeks at the Tree prove quite uneventful. Traders come and go and all is calm by the Tree. Beordir proves himself useful on more than one occasion, eager to help the people of the Tree.

A letter arrives by raven, addressed to Owen. The parchment is weathered, but the words in commmon read:
"Dearest Grandma,
So nice to get your last letter. Things are well here. I’m having a lovely time. Just a little longer til I see you again. I can’t wait to play our games and have some tea with you. Surely you and Ted are going to stay for a little while with us?.
Yours kindly, Graeme
"

On one lazy afternoon with the party killing time at the base of the tree, a cloaked trader happens by with a cart-load of dried shrieker fungus. He lowers his hood to reveal himself to be a drow wearing smoked goggles. Dismounting from his cart, he makes his way over to a local man and strikes up a conversation. You can't hear what is said, but the local man raises his hand to point directly at Leskni. The drow turns and smiles with thin lips.

The drow man walks steadily over to Leskni. He stops in front of her and - not so subtly - looks her up and down with his goggled-eyes. With a straight face he asks her point blank: "Are you Leskni?"

Please welcome Henry (Beordir) to the game!

Also, please feel free to visit the Catacombs, conduct/conclude any training, complete any crafting, and so on. You'll need to be in peak condition for what's in store :)

Answers to specific questions:
"Also you said +1 hero point for everyone, is that in addition to the hero point for leveling up?"
- Yes!

"If I see somebody go down in a shower of blood, do I know if I have 1 round to get to them or 4?"
- I didn't want to make a ruling on this without going to the rules forum (since I play a BloodWitch myself). Please check the rules forum for some answers. In answer to this specific question: Unless you could see into the Realm of Shadows you wouldn't know whether you had 1 round or 4 before the soul leaves/has left

Atlas spends the weeks struggling with Carver's comments. He knows that he is right, and he doesn't like sitting back and waiting for it to happen. However, he doesn't want to leave the Tree unprotected either. Oh well, if we were going to do something it should have been right away. No sense in worrying about it now.

When they are all together, Atlas refers to the note, "Can anyone make heads or tails of this note? I'm guessing the thieves put some code in here, but it is beyond my simple brain."

When the shroom farmer approaches Atlas wanders over towards Leskni. He doesn't notice anything in particular, but he says to Leskni, "Everything alright?"

Carver, worries a lot about what Gaston is planning and the fact that the group or at least part of the group seems not to be worried about what he might be planning. He dedicates most of his time in rebuilding the Jousting target, because by the end of about every practice it's been shattered.
He reads the note that Owen received and about half way through it he begins laughing.....
He starts to say something and can't because he started laughing again..... He finally gets the laughter under control, "Well, we should make a trip to Plateau City after all, we can do a couple things while there. First a few of our group witnessed Gaston try to kill a helpless person, even if it was a Drow. Second, we can laugh at Gaston as he sits in Jail." And Carver starts to laugh again.....

He also purchases a normal light crossbow and bolts and begins practicing with it.

Beordir has been getting acquainted with the Tree and it's inhabitants. It's been so long since he's been around other people to talk to, he makes a right nuisance of himself wanting to talk to everyone. Though his eclectic purchases do help to salve some feelings. He does volunteer to go out on patrol and is a bit calmer with a task to accomplish

He is sitting up on one of the balconies with his feet dangling over the edge painting a meeting between a Satyr and a Halfling on his left forearm with dye. Beordir doesn't really pay attention to the trader until the hood comes down revealing black skin and white hair. Then he sits up and notices. The Drow seems to be looking for one of the Tree Wardens who seem to be very critical to the community. While he can't see what he gives Leskni, he does notice that this drow is no ordinary trader. His clothes are too well made.

He sets aside his artwork and steps down to hear what news the drow brings. Seems like the news is good for the Tree Wardens. Gaston has been accused of a crime and jailed. In spite of Gaston's confinement, they seem to be planning to make a trip to Plateau City.

Beordir looks worried and comments aside from the discussion, "I will need to meditate on this trip. I have not been away from the Leafy Shade in fifty years. I wonder if the Arboreal Memory will forget me. After the most recent communion, I don't want to my travels to set me back. On the other hand, The Maze of Trees did lead me here."

When I stumble upon Beordir for the first time, I waltz over and introduce myself. "Hello! I'm Mack, protector of butterflies. Are you new to the area? If you'd like, I can show you around a little." If he takes me up on the offer, I lead him around some of the less traveled paths, introducing him to various butterflies, squirrels, monkeys, parrots, centaurs, wemics, and other friends I have made since first arriving here.

DM Rob - "Hello! I'm Mack, protector of butterflies."
Tuesday September 13th, 2016 8:56:56 AM

Owen shares the note with the others. The message is quickly decoded. Carver finds Gaston's predicament to be the funniest thing he has heard in a long time. Owen and Mack join in, happy that justice has finally caught up with Gaston. Osul isn't so sure. Sure Gaston is desrving of prison time, but it's possible he was well and truly framed just to get him locked up.

Beordir and Mack get to know each other. The Guardian of the Trees and the Protector of Butterflies seem to have a bit in common.

Many notice the drow's fine attire. Armand doesn't sense anything untoward about the way the drow is acting. Although with drow, can you really tell? Well, this one at least doesn't seem to want to cause any immediate harm to Leskni.

The drow man looks at Leskni, and waits patiently for her to say something. Finally he can wait no longer. He reaches into his cloak and retrieves a scroll. It is sealed with red wax.

"Look, Eclyndryl said to give this to you"

Assuming Leskni opens the scroll and shares its contents...

"My dear friend,

It would please me greatly if you and your companions could come and visit me here at house D’gul. I find myself thinking of you often, and recent discoveries have leant me an inkling that you and your friends might be able to help with a project I have going on. This merchant is an agent of mine. To the group, after sharing the letter
"I obviously have personal reasons, but I think that we should go. We know that she is at least trying to help her house become a little better than it was, trying to improve herself. This may well be an opportunity to help that.

And this is a chance that few people get, a chance to more or less safely visit a Drow city. Yes, I know, it will be fraught with peril. But think of the possibilities for adventure, for learning, for buying cool stuff"

Now we have this amazing opportunity to see the heart of evil and we're still bound here as wardens of the Tree. Let's talk to the good folks of the Tree. Maybe a trip to either place could benefit them in some way. Otherwise, as much as I want to go, I'm not slacking in my oath. Let's get Folbre, Ciyradyl, Hiflanyl, and Miles together for a discussion to sort this out. Maybe there is something with trade that we can help out with at one of the locations?"

As they get together to discuss the letter the drow brought, Beordir lurks near the back. While Beordir has had no interaction with the It-lal, elven mythology does not portray them well. ”I advise caution. In the back of my mind, I have a hard time believing Gaston is sitting in jail; at least not without his consent. I wonder if it's a way to protect himself temporarily. Or even better yet, he has someone else there in his place, enabling him to go about his evil ways unnoticed. I relay my concerns to the others when it seems appropriate. Maybe we can send a message, to at least closely verify that it's actually him.

He nods to Atlas and turns to the Drow. "Excuse, I don't believe we have been introduced. You know Leskni, that is Atlas, Beordir, Mack, Owen, and I am Armand. What might your name be? Could you tell us something of where your city is located? Are there many non-Drow that live or visit there?"

(OOC what time of year is it? Last time anything was said it was early fall. How much trade generally goes on during this time of year?)

Armand turns to Owen. "How long has it been since you have seen your family? Would you like to bring them to the Tree? I'm sure we can make room for them at our headquarters.

"Actually, we didn't enter an agreement, we were going to be a trade point for the "deal" between Gaston and the Drow. But maybe we can, by going there and helping out, arrange for some form of trade deal where we at the tree get a bigger cut.
So I think we should make plans and let the PTB's here know we will be away for awhile.
We may be the Protectors of the Tree, but I plan on seeing more of the area than just the branches and the land we can see from the highest limbs. If we want to protect the Tree of Parting, we must cover a larger area, that way our reputation gets spread around, convincing those who might wish to cause mischief to go elsewhere to cause it, making the Tree safe without having to even lift a finger. "

"Interesting..." is all 'Osul says on hearing the offer, and listens.

DM Rob - "Yes, I know, it will be fraught with peril."
Wednesday September 14th, 2016 8:45:16 AM

Leskni asks - in perfect drow - if the drow man can wait a moment. Knowing the taur is actually Leskni now, the drow gives a respectful low bow. She recalls a piece of correspondence where she learned that Eclyandryl is the Senior Sister now, and thus, is in charge of House Dul'g.

Beordir urges caution. Drow - at their heart - are usually evil. Honor means something different to them, and they often care little for the damage they cause to reach their goals.

The decision to leave the Tree is a group decision but for the time being, the group are undecided..
Leskni, obviously, wants to see what is going on.
Carver, also wants to spread further from the Tree. If you have the power to protect or serve a greater realm, then don't you also have the responsibility to do so?
Mack is all for it as well but can't stop thinking of Gaston. Was he framed? Did he get himself imprisoned for his own gain?
Atlas isn't as convinced. Sure, it would be an amazing opportunity, but have they committed themselves to the Tree?
Owen is also in the "let's see" camp.
Osul remains undecided.

Armand and Owen have some questions. After introducing the party Armand enquires as to the drow mans name and where they would be going.

"I am Zulok Tzzukah of House Tzzukah" the drow man announces in common while rising from his bow "The area that Eclyndryl wishes I take you is just within the border of the Scab. Only drow would be present, and in fact, we would try and conceal your presence from them. Things could turn unpleasant otherwise"

To Mack, Zulok clarifies "We would not be going to a drow city I'm afraid. Eclyndryl wishes I take you to... something she has found. Something that could affect drow - and possibly Wold - history"

Atlas looks around at their adventuring group and in a quiet, mischievous voice, he says, "What's with this elf following us around?"

After letting that hang for a while, Atlas heads over to Leskni. "Look, I have no problem with romance. You can have your romance with whomever you want as long as they aren't hurting people. However, what I do care about is this group, and last time around your idealistic nature caused everyone to be at risk. If we go, you need to promise to us that you'll stop doing what you want when you want. We are a group and we make group decisions. I won't have you putting us in danger because you're in love or because you think everyone has good in them. Hopefully you have seen that is not the case by now." Atlas growls to himself. He wants to rattle some sense into Leskni, but he's trying to keep things civil. Just the thought of how it went down with the drow last time and with Gaston puts him on edge and makes him want to chops some heads off.

To the rest of the group, "If Leskni commits to being a team player and putting the group ahead of herself then I'm good going with the drow. It sounds like something dangerous is afoot and we need to take care of it before it can impact the Tree."

After a bit Atlas looks around again and his eyes land on the elf, "What's your deal? I feel like you're a lost puppy and you're following us around. Do you have desires to join our group or are you just a groupie?" He says this in a direct way. Not mean, yet not cheerful like he usually is. He's trying to catch the elf off guard to see how he reacts.

As the It-lal speaks, Beordir thinks about the Scab north of the Lush Rubble. He’d traveled that way….40 years ago. Things have surely changed, but still it is helpful the Tangle of Green guards it’s communities from the dark elves’ emergence.

The human, Atlas, then interrupts the debate with recriminations for Leskni. Perhaps he thinks he is the leader. However, speaking truth and questioning motivations need not be done without tact.

When Atlas turns his bravado toward Beordir, he greets his questioning coolly. ”I am no sycophant. However, your friends and you are doing the most complicated tasks to advance the Tree’s influence in the local area. I have mirrored your efforts for my home village.”

“As you have seen, I am not one to stand idly by when by acting I by helping I can make things better. The Soul of Timber has lead me here and I will not squander the opportunity It has provided. I would hope you could recognize when assistance offered.

For example, The Scab is a long way. Some 150 miles directly across the Sea of Green. There is a river that flows south from the Scab that may help you keep from being diverted in your travels....If you can get there.”

When Beordir mentions the river route to the Scab, Owen jerks back to the conversation. He forces a laugh, saying, "I'd like to avoid taking the river route if at all possible. You weren't around when I arrived here, but those who were will remember that I was a little more acquainted with the East Peaseblossom than I wanted to be. "There is a river flowing south out of the northern mountains. I think Owen called it the East PeaseBottom. The Nation of Wildwood is to the west and the Red Hills are to the east. Savage humanoids come down from the Red Hills to harvest lumber and raid the river trade. Ogres and hill giants if I recall, but there's certainly going to be orcs and bugbear as well."

"The Birth of Saplings has occurred, crossing the...East PeaseBottom river in the south. If we take the river route, we will be surrounded by Maze of Trees for some part of the journey. We will have to contend with the Rattle of Branches. Answering that call would lose us in the woods."

"If we skirt the west of the Red Hills, we can avoid getting lost, but we will be in savage territory. Raids will be a significant concern."

He turns to Atlas, "Given your most recent betrayal, I understand your caution. I cannot say I will be of great value to you, but I do not seek harm on any thing currently. OOC: I can't easily do e-mails during the work day. Nor can I update the Google Docs during the work day. I'm planning on taking care of the Party Treasure completely late afternoon today. So if anyone has any last minute updates they want to make to it, please do so, or e-mail me your thoughts. I'll send out an e-mail with who is taking what items, to make sure you have it on your character sheets. Then I'll sell the stuff we're not keeping on Party Treasure, and divvy up the gold. :)

He would love to pick Beordir's brain (though, not like a crow would), but either way likely not in the middle of the meeting.

Zulok doesn't look uncomfortable in the least as the party discuss things openly in front of him.

Mack's grasp of the common tongue is perfect, and he is able to articulate his thoughts clearly: how far we goin'? "Oh, around 150miles north east of here"

Osul takes a moment to consider the weather. Things are quite lovely on this Spring day and should probably continue so for the rest of the week. As for the weather in the Scab? Who knows! With Winter having passed, the demand for food trade will be lower at the Tree. People being able to farm and forage for themselves. Surplus stock might still be used for trade however.

Armand enquires about the destination a little mor "I feel uncomfortable divulging too much. This is Eclyndryl's business and I don't wish to disrespect her by spoiling any news or surpirse she may wish to personally share. Suffice to say though she wishes you join her underground"

Atlas has a few thoughts to share - some good natured ribbing of Beordir, followed by some questions for Leskni.

Beordir keeps his cool, not one to bite into an argument.

Carver welcomes "the elf" to the group, knowing that a group can often do more than an individual.

Owen reminisces about his family. Things have quietened down at the Tree. Perhaps now is the time he could look to relocate his family closer to it? The thought of a river journey though is not one that he would welcome.

To the group:
"Unless anybody objecrs, I definitely plan to icontact Eclyndryl at noon and see what she has to say. Getting more information seems to me to be a good thing, regardless of what we do with that information"

OOC: It isn't completely clear to me how the spell (call spirit http://woldiangames.com/Woldipedia/index.php/Spell:_Call_Spirit) works. Do others see and hear the spirit or just me? Can others communicate directly or does all conversation essentially go through me?

Armand goes to seek out Miles. "Hello, Miles. That Drow farmer/merchant that just arrived appears to have some sort of mission from the Drow woman Eclyndryl. Seems there's something up around something called the Scab. Seems to be a fair distance from here. From her letter, Eclyndryl seems to think that it poses a danger to us as well. Leskni is going to try and contact Eclyndryl to get more information. Are there any other pressing problems facing the Tree right now?"

Armand pauses. "Oh, and I thought you would like to know that apparently Gaston has been arrested in Plateau City. Not sure what his sentence is or if he will manage to get out of it, but for the short term it appears he is not going to cause any problems."

Carver and Atlas are already decided. It's time for the party to venture out of sight of the Tree and see a little more of the Wold!

Mack and Owen have a quick chat about geography before Mack goes for a walk to clear his head. It is a short walk.

--------------------------------------------

Armand seeks out Miles for his advice. For his part, Miles listens to what Armand has to say but does seem confused by it all. "Pressing problems here? Nothing comes to mind." Miles sighs and looks to Armand "You and your friends have done so much for us already. If you're needed elsewhere we can manage. I wouldn't want to be the reason to keep you from your dreams"

--------------------------------------------

Leskni finds a quiet room to prepare for her spell. Placing a single hair of Eclyndryl's into the cauldron of water, she concentrates hard on the image of her friend. It doesn't take long for Eclyndryl's ghostly image to appear in the cauldron

"Leskni, is that you or am I dreaming once more? I hope my envoy has found you. I had no idea being the Senior Sister would be so demanding. Would you believe we have made a discovery in the Scab that dates back to the Year of Ascension? But I fear it could be a double edged blade. I don't know who to trust. I fear some may seek to usurp me."

OOC: I'm treating this spell as anyone can see the image in the cauldron, but only Leskni can communicate with it. This seems to go along with the spell writeup

DM Rob - "The alternative is sitting here twiddling our thumbs (or dew-claws or what-have-you)"
Monday September 19th, 2016 7:43:57 AM

Armand thinks back to what he remembers of the Years of Ascension. The Year of Ascension marked the end of the Fourth Age. It was after this period that there was a great cataclysm and the Wold was reformed with two pantheons of Gods. Quite some time ago.

Owen tries to specifically recall what was happening in the Scab during the Year of Ascension. He does recall one tidbit of information from his schooling years: During that time in the Scab, the drow would regularly launch attacks both on dwarves in the mountains as well as on surface dwelling races. They were bitter enemies with practically everyone.

Carver also tries to recollect some information that may be useful. He recalls hearing tales of magnificent lava tubes underneath the Scab that the drow would use to safely travel. It was from these that they launched many of their attacks on the surface during that time. Several well known adventuring groups - including the Storm Dragons, a legendary Dragon Consortium group - intentionally collapsed the tunnels, slaying over 100,000 drow in the process and for the most part destroying their culture within the Wold.

Mack tries to playfully disrupt the conversation, seeing whether he can make the image of Eclyndryl move. It ever so slightly moves across the surface of the cauldron as he blows.

Atlas is less excited about the task now. If they are only going because a drow is fearful of her crown, then how is that heroic? He wants to know how this might better serve the Wold rather than a single individual.

Beordir listens quietly to the conversation Leskni has with Eclyndryl.

Leskni calmly tries to explain to Eclyndryl that the party need more to go on. Even through this dreamlike spell, Leskni can feel Eclyndryl growing impatient, even if she doesn't show it "Truth be told, we don't know what we have found. We can't get inside. My scholars can't agree amongst themselves as to whether we have found a tomb, a temple, a vault, or something else. Openly inviting you would make me seem weak - having to rely on outsiders to do work for me, you see. But not opening it could be worse. Suffice to say that whatever is inside would be incredibly interesting to us, and likely valuable as well - both in monetary and cultural value. To not provide that to my people when it is so close would be... disheartening. That is why I ask. Please come"

With that, the image of Eclyndryl fades and the spell ends. (Leskni takes 2d4=2 pts temporary con damage. The dice favour you!)

Those who leave the room find Zulok waiting at the base of the Tree, his cart now empty of shrieker fungus. "I trust you spoke with m'lady? She has authorised me to provide you this small incentive should you seek to aid us" Zulok provides the party with a pouch of fire rubies - enough for everyone to have at least 16,000gp WBL :)

Atlas perks up some with the fire rubies, but it isn't long before he starts pacing the grounds again. "First and foremost, I don't trust them. 'Interesting to us, and likely valuable as well.' This is about her, not about doing something good or even beneficial for us. Granted, even if she offered us half of what is inside I doubt I would trust her to fulfill the bargain, but this is clearly all for her own self-interest. I will go with the majority, but my vote is to let her face the wrath of her people. I don't see how getting involved with drow politics is in any way helpful to the Tree or does the greater good for the Wold. It would be fun, I'll give it that, but it just seems wrong. Someone prove me wrong, please."

Atlas gets ready to hand the fire rubies back if the group decides against going. "'Osul, that could very well be. That was a place I would like to forget, not to mention, I think we emptied it. Zulok, this doesn't happen to be where you are taking us does it?" Atlas squats down and draws a quick map in the dirt with his dagger, indicating where they had turned off the beacon.

ooc: Just roleplaying here. I am assuming the group is voting to go, at which point Atlas is going. However, it would be great to hear everyone's incentive so that the story has a good ring to it.

The conversation between Eclyndryl and Leskni is irritating on it’s face. She is asking for help and as knowledgeable as this group is, she is probably asking the right people. However, as Atlas reminds everyone, there is the question of whether it’s good for the Tree of Parting. Raising his brush, Beordir casts his mind over to the Leafy Sprawl. His Growth has been making gains in so many direction during Border’s lifetime, reaching out to touch the hills to the north and flowing out into civilization in the south. But the It-lal are safe from Her influence since She cannot grow away from the light of the sun….like other things do…

Surprised, he looks out the window to the north. Gathering his wits back into the room, he tries to share, ”Atlas, are you thinking about this journey in a strategic way?” Hoping his words would strike the right chord with the warrior, he fumbles onward, ”This task does not help the Tree directly. But it does link the It-lal to the Tree. They are asking for help. That implies that we could ask them for help too. Even if we get nothing for the Tree from this endeavor, the future assistance could outweigh the entire contents of their edifice.”

He turns to Leskni, ”I’d like to come with you to help the It-lal.”

"I'm not saying we have to trust the drow. It sounds like a fun place to explore though. And someone's going to do it. Better us then a band of drow that WILL eventually make their way there. No one says we have to give anything to the drow. We might find something there we feel is safer to hand over to the Tree instead, to try to keep it in somewhat neutral hands."

I realize my head hurts. I don't usually think this hard. I let my mind ease back to more important things.....

"I'd like to introduce you all to Squeaver! I found him swimming in the nearby river. I thought he needed rescuing at first, but apparently, I'm the one that needed rescuing once I fell in." ;) I point to a giant albino squirrel that has followed me back to the Tree after one of my meandering walks.

"I'm afraid I need to bring this up, it's from what I recall from my studies before I became a Mercenary. This area she wants our help with, is in amungst the section that one of the Dragon Consortium groups, I think it was Storm Dragons, but don't quote me on that, But is was where they collapsed a large section of the tunnels that flow about underneath the Scab. It stopped a war back then, and it was assumed that everyone of the Drow that was there when it was collapsed was dead. What if this area she wants us to investigate is a location that didn't collapse and there is a bunch of Drow in there trying to get out and if that happens there will once again be war. That by itself is terrible, If there is war in the region, the Tree will be effected and not in a good way."
Carver lets that sink in before he continues, "Just that alone is reason enough, although I'm not looking forward to being underground again...."

Armand smiles and rises. Before leaving the room and being in earshot of anyone not of the party.

"Well Atlas, I'd like to point out a few things." Armand paces. "One, Carver did a once over on Ecy..the female drow, while she was here. As you recall she did not turn up as solely evil. Though neither was she good. She is at a stage where I image circumstances could turn her one way or the other." He pauses and looks to Carver for confirmation.

"Two, technically her house and the Tree are already in a trade agreement. If she can prove this venture profitable then her house will gain more power. So for her maintaining the trade is good. If the Tree can maintain it who knows maybe someday down the road there will be other kinds of treaty with her house. This could enable her to swing more to the good, at the very least it would prevent her from having to go to the dark side." Armand chuckles, "get it, dark side, dark elf," he looks around at the faces staring back at him.

"Okay Third. I assume we're going in to the place she can't get in. And by us, I mean us here, and no 'Drow' helpers. We need to be clear on that when we get there. Unless said helper wants to be first cleared by Carver's scrutiny, some detect magic, and other spells, we operate without Drow overseers. That means WE see first what ever is in this place. We determine what to do with it, be it destroy it, or bring it out, or whatever. If it helps her standing and is not overtly evil then it goes to her. That way, as Beordir said, she owes us. And by us I mean the Tree and us, not just us."

Armand sits down. "Anyway that's my silver piece worth of comment."

"If most of the evil drow were killed, that would open a power vacuum. If we help a less brutal faction fill that void, that would remove a powerful evil presence and replace it with a good one. I would be hard pressed to come up with a stronger strategic reason than that."

DM Rob - "Asad's place?"
Tuesday September 20th, 2016 7:38:46 AM

Mack is intrigued. A place the drow can't access sounds very tempting. Those guys have been everywhere.

Leskni has decided that she wants to check it out.

Atlas restates his distrust of the drow. Why should the party stick their collective necks out to save one of theirs?

The others have some ideas about this.

Beordir speaks of how it could help reinforce the relationship the party seems to have with the drow. What's more, it could see more trade for the Tree.

Mack points out how it would be better the group discovering whatever is to be found than the drow finding it. Even if it is Eclyndryl. As an aside, he introduces the party to his giant albino squirrel. Yeah. That happened. :)

Carver shares the knowledge of the terrible death toll the drow suffered during the Year of Ascension. He questions what would happen if some drow had survived. Unless preserved in some way, they would be very, very old.

Armand lays his points out clearly for the group to hear. He wisely points out how Eclyndryl - though not all evil, nor all good - is at a crossroads. Helping steer her to the path of good could have a lasting impact on her entire house. Especially now that she heads it.

Owen is interested purely for academic reasons. It could be the historical find of a lifetime.

It sounds like the party are decided on going. Are they set for the journey?

Excited to tell a short, and probably not real exciting story, I reply to Owen in a very fast voice: "Well, I was walking along the river, and I saw a really large, white beaver swimming, and I thought to myself 'I've never seen a WHITE beaver before', so I got closer to take a look. I lost my footing, and slipped in. It was at that moment that it dawned on me that I've never learned how to swim. I probably would have managed to make it back to shore, but before I knew it, the giant white beaver had swam closer to me, and aided me in getting close enough to pull myself out. It was then that I noticed it wasn't a beaver after all, but a giant white squirrel, swimming in the water! I asked him what he was doing in the river, and he said 'Squeakity squEAk squeaKer', which means 'Swimming, of course, silly', in not quite so many words. And so, I named him Squeaver, as one of his parents must have been a beaver." ...... I realize I have rambled a little more than I usually do, and nervously hoping I didn't bore Owen, I pet Squeaver's head, and we wander off again.

"We're hanging a lot on a what-ifs and very unlikely scenarios. And I don't care how many times people tell me that Eclyndryl is at a crossroads, she isn't going to change the entire drow society, and her house isn't going to become a beacon of light all of a sudden. OK, that pun didn't work all that well considering the last beacon of light we dealt with wasn't good like the saying would suggest. Anyway, I'm just saying that I think we're being foolish to think we're going to change the way drow live and breathe. However, the rest of you have made some good points, so lets get this show on the road." Atlas is about to bend over to pick up his backpack, but he hesitates. "When the time comes to solve this mystery, lets make sure that we're not surrounded by drow, or even Eclyndryl for that matter. I don't trust any of them and I don't want to take a chance that any of us get stabbed in the back or we get dumped in a trap so they can run off with the findings. Armand first brought it up, and I agree. Can we agree on this as a group?"

Atlas lifts his backpack and is ready to hit the road immediately. As he waits he hears Mack's story and bursts out laughing. "Thank you friend, I needed a good laugh right about now."

As much as Atlas is fighting the trip, it is clear that he is happy to be on the road again. He has been bored out of his mind the past year and wants to chop the heads off some monsters and run his fingers through a chest of gems and gold. The adventuring life is in his bones.

[b]"Well I have a horse. It used to be Gaston's. And we still have the horse that James was riding."

Armand checks over his backpack and bag of holding. He slips his glaive into his recently purchased Efficient quiver. "I think I'm about ready. Just a few things to finish up. Meet you at the base of the Tree." He nods to everyone as he heads out.

He stops to speak to James to see how he is doing. (OOC I'm not quite sure what happened with James, did we hire him to butle and clean our headquarters, or is he otherwise employed by the Tree? I'm not sure if he would be considered a trained or untrained hireling. Mack lightens the mood with a story about how he met the giant albino squirrel named Squeaver.

The others agree than first and foremost, they should look out for each other. Whatever the drow may (or may not) have in store is nothing the group can't handle if it works together. Even Leskni agrees that the group should be wary of the drow, despite her personal view on Eclyndryl.

Final preparations are made for the journey: Trips to the catacombs, and of course, ensuring sufficient pay is left for James.

Zulok is found already seated in his cart ready to lead the party on the journey.

The citizens of the Tree wave you off. The keen eyed of you can tell that despite the smiles they are genuinely sad to see you go.

Good progress is made during the first day of travel. Osul's prediction for the weather stays true. Nothin' but blue skies.

It turns out that Zulok isn't one for small-talk. He stays silent for most of the trip.

Anyone want to give it a try?" If no one takes him up on it then he goes out to try himself. He is surprisingly successful!

Once they have dinner Atlas asks the group, "Let's set the watch schedule. Same as before...wow that was a long time ago. Where should we put Beordir?"

Before Atlas begins his watch he stops by to talk to Leskni. "Thank you for compromising regarding our level of trust for the drow. I will do the same and I will look to their actions and adjust my level of trust accordingly. This is how I think of it. I have a trust scale from -10 to 10. If I meet a stranger at the Tree they start off on my trust scale with a 0. Then their actions influence how much I trust them. However, if a friend introduces me to someone and tells me how wonderful they are then I trust them more. Lets say they start with a 3. The drow, well, their reputation is well known, therefore they start on my scale at a -10. Sure, it's not fair for that 1 out of 1000 drow that are not pure evil, but those are the numbers. However, I will tell you that Eclyndryl has worked her way up based on her actions. I would say that she's at a -3ish right now. Given time she could be a 10, but things like that time time and experience with the person. So, I vow to you that I'll watch her and I will continue to adjust her scale according to her actions. She just had a big hole to climb out of is all. Does that work?"

Oh, she'd still need a reasonable reason even then but ....

One thing that I both respect in her AND that makes me distrust her a little is that she has a strong loyalty to her House. I'm not really sure where her loyalty to me would stand if it came into direct conflict with her duty to her House.

But,so far, you have to admit that she has really done nothing to harm us or any inhabitants of the Tree. As long as you're willing to give her SOME benefit of the doubt we're probably ok.

It is a lovely spring afternoon for Flufferbutter the rabbit. His wife was in the burrow tending after the young, and he'd taken the opportunity to get a few minutes peace in the setting sun. Bounding through the daisies that scattered the meadow he realised that life was good. Yes, Maab truly had blessed...

*THWAK*

Atlas and Mack are successful in hunting a rabbit today.

Curiously, Mack rates Atlas a 9 out of 10 when it comes to trustworthiness. A high rating, to be sure, why not the perfect 10?

Osul double checks his possesions and finding both things there, is content.

Armand let's Zulok have his moment with the fire, but points out the problem with having a fire at night: by the time you can see something, they've already found you.

Carver enjoys the chance to stretch his legs. His new shoes making the journey quite easy.

Leskni has a quiet word with Atlas. If worst comes to worst, to try and not do any lethal damage to Eclyndryl.

Owen relaxes. Finally the party are acting maturely and like friends. Well, except for Zulok of course.

If Zulok has picked up on any animosity, it doesn't show.

Dinner is delicious and enough to fill the bellies of all.

The camp fire is smothered, and the night watches commence.

Leskni and Pella watch on, but don't act. Yet...

That noone seems concerned is a little off to Armand. He holds a rock in his hands. Just in case.

Zulok produces a hand-crossbow and cocks it. He isn't taking any chances.

The alpha wolf moves closer to the advance party of Mack, Osul and Carver. They can now see that it carries a dead pheasant in its jaws.

The wolf approaches, and carefully drops the pheasant on the ground before your feet. The wolf gives some quiet yelps, howls and growls as if it's trying to say something to the party. It looks to the drow, and the wolf bares its teeth and raises its hackles.

With that done, the wolf casually walks off to join the rest of its pack as they leave the party alone in the night.

"That was strange" Zulok comments, lowering his crossbow.

"Thank you, but wait!", 'Osul calls to the alpha wolf - first in Sylvan (the language of woodland creatures as noted in the Druid Class features, or the language of the fey -- Centaurs, unicorns, fey creatures and plant creatures as noted in the Linguistics skill), and then in Common.

To Mack and Carver he says, "I am not sure what has just happened here, but clearly there was more to that than giving us a bird and not liking Zulok. I need to know more."

If the wolf stops he wild shapes into a wolf, all the better to understand and speak.

After the Alpha returns to his pack, Carver plucks the pheasant and cleans it as needed, then sticks it on a spit to cook, hopefully someone else can make sure he doesn't burn it.
While sitting around, "He's just repaying a favor that was done from a while ago. As to not liking the Drow, I imagine that a lot of the natural creatures in the region have a dislike for those from beneath it. Probably due to the continuous warring from both sides. Osul calls out to the wolf in druidic and in sylvan. If it understands him, it does not respond in any way (Highlight to display spoiler: {Per the rules forum discussion, I'm going with if the creature doesn't have the language listed then it doesn't understand. In this case, the wolf writeup doesn't make any mention of them speaking druidic or sylvan})

When Osul wildshapes into the form of a wolf, however, things get a little more interesting. The wolf looks back and now sees a wolf standing where Osul once did. The wolf howls, growls and groans once more, but to onlookers does not appear aggressive to Osul.

If you speak 'wolf'... Highlight to display spoiler: {"Trees are better now. Darkness has gone. Food has returned and our pack grows. Thanks to you and your pack. The food is gift to you." The wolf looks to Zulok "That one though ... he smells different to you. I don't like it."

}

The wolf howls loudly and the pack move quickly away from the party.

Carver thanks the wolves for their gift and offers a blessing from Gargul. He may have the right of it, this may have just been the wolf repaying a debt.

Armand laments now being able to see in darkness. Sure, there are folks out there with Goggles of Night, or Permanent DarkVision, but who has the gold for those sort of expenses?

Owen makes notes about the interation. How often does one see a peaceful wolf?

"You are a strange group" Zulok comments as he returns to a cross-legged position by the burnt out fire.

Leskni takes a moment to speak with the group privately. She suggests that someone always keep an eye on Zulok, proudly pointing out how cautious she is becoming.

Beordir nods in agreement, noting that there would always be someone on watch with Zulok. The behaviour he observes in the wolf is indeed unusual. Not the sort of thing you would normally see between a humanoid and a wolf. It was more like the wolf was interacting with the party as if they were a pack themselves. A pack on equal footing. For a wolf to share food, its supply must indeed be bountiful.

Mack agrees to keep an extra eye on Zulok. Where that eye is is anyone's guess.

The rest of the evening is uneventful.

Confirmation is provided by Osul: the wolf pack were there only to extend their gratitude to the party. Your good deeds are going noticed by both the noble races and the animal kingdom.

The rest of the journey is quite uneventful. Long, but uneventful.

It has taken several days, but the party can finally see the rocky mountains of the Scab starting to loom before them. In between the land looks quite barren. Rocks and the remains of very few dead trees are all the can be seen on the ground. Every now and then a steam pocket erupts from the ground with a hot hiss of water vapour.

Even though it is midday, the sky is quite dark. In the distance you can see lightning crackling atop the peak of one of the Scab's many active volcanoes. Even from what you consider to be a safe distance, you can still feel the ground rumble.

There are many powerful forces - natural and unnatural - at play in the Scab.

The perceptive of you can hear Zulok mutter something to himself in drow before advising in common: "You might want to stay alert from here on in. Besides the dragons, the valley full of insects, the demons, the undead hordes, and the giants, there are other things here that could kill you" You can tell by his voice that he's serious. Scald lives within a large Hot Spring lake full of fountains that goes by the same name. He opposes Fhorge as often as he can causing a great tension between fire and water in The Scab.}

If Zulok is following a trail, it doesn't show. The ground does not show signs of regular travel. It may have been weeks since the last horse passed this way, and who knows how much time preceeded that one. There are no signs of foot travel either. Still, Zulok is unwavering in the direction he is travelling. The direction: straight towards a mountain.

As the party slowly approach the mountain you can see a simple cave in the side of it. Eclyndryl stands before the cave with a small entourage - 4 armed honor guards and 2 men-in-waiting. The guards stand stiffly at attention in polished armor, scimitars held upright in their left hands, daggers held by their sides in their right hands. Eclyndryl holds her head high and proud, but you can see behind her tough facade that she is happy you have come.

Zulok dismounts from the cart and approaches her. "Lady Eclyndryl, may I..." he stops when he sees that she has focused her attention on him, and has raised her eyebrows - obviously trying to convey some silent message. He pauses for a moment before realising his faux pas.

Zulok drops to one knee and restarts "Senior Sister, I present the outsiders you requested"

"Thankyou Zulok, but I would prefer you refer to them as our guests." Eclyndryl admonishes him "You may leave us. Go. Rest from your travels. I am glad you have returned safely"

Zulok rises and bows his head "By your leave, Senior Sister". He does not dare look back at the party as he makes his way into the cave, leaving his horse and empty cart behind.

Thursday September 29th, 2016 8:30:15 AM

Carver briefs the party on the Immortal Powers of the Scab, and on the traditional blessing. Some say it, whilst Beordir offers his own solemn version.

Armand's knowledge of such things fails him at the moment, but he does recall that these powers are present on this plane. They are almost tied to the land itself.

------------------------

Mack farewells their travelling companion as he disappears into the cave. If Zulok heard, he didn't respond.

Mack then says something in goblin, and eyes the guards for a reaction. Both Mack and Beordir notice that Eclyndryl and one of the men-in-waiting stifle a grin. The guards look confused. As Mack speaks he notices the guards grip their scimitars a little tighter, one leans forward as if he is going to attack or stop Mack, but stops himself. They look confused rather than insulted. Was Mack trying to cast a spell with foreign words? Was something about to go down?

Eclyndryl raises a hand "Calm, men. Our guest was simply inquiring as to my level of protection" she says as a half-truth "These honor guard have protected generations of House Dul'g. Each has proven their loyalty more than once. I feel safer with them than around any others. My sisters included"

Atlas looks to Leskni to commence the diplomatic side of things. He's quite happy to just be a presence and observe what happens.

Armand offers a very diplomatic greeting to Eclyndryl. Any apprehension the guards may have had goes away with the kind words. The men-in-waiting nod to each other in approval.

Following the prayers from earlier, Mack is still silent. Seen, but not heard.

"On behalf of House Dul'g, I thankyou for answering our call." Eclyndryl says, opening her arms in what appears a very rehearsed motion. "We should continue discussions inside. Kyan, would you see that the passage is clear? Guldor, please see than the horses are tended to"

The men-in-waiting both step forward and bow to Eclyndryl. One (Kyan) makes for the cave whilst the other (Guldor) makes his way to the horses.

Kyan returns back and announces to Eclyndryl "The passage is clear, Senior Sister"

"Very well. Thankyou, Kyan. Now guests, if you would follow me..."

Two of Eclyndryl's honor guard take the lead, whilst the other two remain to serve as rear guard for the party.

What looked a simple cave on the outside actually opens into expertly carved and perfectly fashioned stone tunnels. It’s like a small drow community. The party are quickly ushered into a side room without sighting of any other drow, including Zulok.

The room is very plain. Eclyndryl has set 4 everburning torches into the walls (obviously for the party’s benefit) and in the centre of the room stands a large rectangular granite table. Cold metallic chairs line either side of the table. Whilst they look very nice, they have been made to look valuable rather than feel comfortable. Some chairs look to be missing, but in their place are some large sized cushions and blankets (taur sized). At the head of the table sits a more ornate version of the chairs.

"I wish to speak to our guests privately" Eclyndryl says firmly to the guards "Please wait outside and see that we are not disturbed. Kyan, could you see if you could find some food and drink for our guest?"

The drow men obey Eclyndryl without hesitation. Her word looks to be law here. Kyan shuts the door behind him as he leaves, and Eclyndryl visibly relaxes. "Please sit down, friends" she says gesturing to the chairs "There is no need for formality in here."

Eclyndryl takes her seat at the head of the table and leans forward to speak to the group. "It is so good to see you all again" she looks to each of you as she says this, and smiles to Leskni as she finishes.

Before we get into the business that brought us here, can you bring us up to speed on the current situation within your family and the larger political aspects? It sounds like you have been busy since you returned. The last thing I want is for our lack of knowledge on your politics to get us or you in trouble while we are here.

With the conversation already underway, he observes from his vantage point.

With the party now alone with Eclyndryl, everyone relaxes enough to ask the questions that have been on their mind.

Beordir's emotions have been highs and lows. Just when he gets his hopes up that he might see something special, he is diverted away into something mundane.

Atlas offers a heartfelt thanks, and then takes the opportunity to speak his mind. Carver smiles in response at his brazenness.

"The politics will be the death of me. My eldest sister is reaching her senescence, and the next eldest has no interest in leadership or clergy at all. So the mantle of leadership falls to me."

Osul can sense some sadness in her words.

That changes as soon as Leskni offers a heartfelt hug. Words are exchanged and Leskni places Eclyndryl safely down once more.

Mack takes to examining the surrounds. Perhaps the room is trapped, or being spied upon? Despire his keen and thorough check, he does not turn up anything out of the ordinary.

"I don't know how much Leskni has told you, so I will start from the beginning. House Dul'g is at a tipping point. It's not unusual for there to be uncertainty with a chance in leadership, but this feels different. I hear the whispers and see the glances. There is a perception that our house is weak, and ripe for overthrowing.

I won't let this happen, obviously. I needed a way to demonstrate that we are still strong and still capable of leading. My solution is expansion. To that end we have been excavating and reopening the Lava Tubes of Thekk."

"Not only would it show we have grown as a race since the massacre, but we could even look at charging others who want to use the Lava Tubes to safely travel the Scab. There are many, many dangers on the surface of the Scab after all. Owning a safe passage could boost our economy and open further trade routes"

Eclyndryl seems genuinely interested in all of this.

"Things were going surprisingly well. But then we came across something unusual. Adjacent to one of the lava tubes we have uncovered a stone room with a door inside that we cannot open. The mystery of what could be behind it has become the source of much speculation and gossip."

It's at this point that Eclyndryl addresses Carver's point of wanting to go without an escort.

"I place my trust in Leskni on this, and so, will in turn place my trust in each of you. I WANT you to enter without any of my people present. If there is something inside that could be dangerous to the Wold, I don't want to know of it nor do I want my people to know of it. Such a thing could be a temptation for some wanting to overthrow my house and use that power for conquest. No, if there is anything dangerous inside I trust that you will remove or destroy it."

"If it contains something dangerous, then it cannot remain here. Then again, these tunnels were collapsed at the end of the Year of Ascension. There could be culturally significant finds inside. Provided they are of no threat to the Wold, anything that is culturally significant to my people should be returned to my people."

"Finally, I assume there will be finds that are not of significance to us. If you find anything that isn't culturally sensitive, then we split the finds based on market value: 80 percent for you, 20 percent for my house."

Atlas beams at the thought of treasure, and more importantly, at how well the negotiations went down. "Eclyndryl, thank you for your logical thinking and for inviting us to help you with this problem. Your vision is sound and would be a benefit to many in the Wold. I thought the biggest fight on this trip was going to be the negotiation, but you have shown yourself to be very pragmatic. I don't see any sense in why we cannot help out under these terms, but we make these decisions as a group. Thoughts everyone?" Atlas looks around at the rest of the group waiting to see if he made anyone mad with his lack of further negotiating.

"Although many of my people are merchants I myself am not. so take the following for what little it is worth. A 20% finders fee for you seems basically fair if perhaps a little high. Perhaps 15% would be fairer? The issue that I see is if we recover items that both have cultural significance for you AND have appreciable material value. Perhaps there we could negotiate a finders fee for us, say 60% of the fair market value?"

Not at all sure if diplomacy is required, but if it is I'd take 10 if allowed for a 25 or, if can't take 10, get a 27 instead :-)

OOC: Apparently those mercantile relatives rubbed off on Leskni more than she realized :-)

"You foresee opening the tunnels to others for trade purposes, maybe you can set up some of that trading with the tree as well. I'm sure that they would deal fairly with whomever."

He then waits for the others to decide before voicing his decision, "I doubt anyone here doesn't already know, but I say lets get this underway."

Friday September 30th, 2016 10:36:50 PM

Beordir is impressed. Eclyndryl is very clearly a leader with a long vision of good intentions. The fact that she has not attempted to trade with the Tree, or Troll seems to be a limit on her thinking that the above ground world has no value. Perhaps the groups continued involvement can help that.

Beodir nods in agreement and replies, "The price seems fair to me."

Armand addresses the group. "Let's remember that Eclyndryl has already paid us just to come here. I think her terms are fair. Especially if she is simply going to buy anything we don't find useful for ourselves. It would be easier to travel back to the tree with a pocket full of coins or gems rather than a load of miscellaneous items that we still have to find a buyer for."

Armand pauses to consider something. "However, if all cultural items automatically go to House Dul'g, then perhaps all hard currency items should go to the party?"

DM Rob - "I doubt anyone here doesn't already know, but I say lets get this underway."
Monday October 3rd, 2016 9:49:26 AM

Atlas praises Eclyndryl on her sound thinking, and both Beordir and Carver are happy that the direction the drow are taking is one of construction and trade.

"Trading with the Tree would still be difficult from the Scab. The lava tubes would allow travel within the Scab, but travel to others areas of the continent would still pose the usual dangers."

Owen also takes a moment to praise Eclyndryl for the terms of her agreement. If a drow is trying to do the right thing, a little positive reinforcment could go a long way!

Mack enquires on whether Eclyndryl has anything that could aid the party in their task

"Did Zulok provide you with the fire rubies? I sent a pouch with him. I had hoped you would use them to prepare yourselves for whatever you might face."

The party are all in agreement that the exercise is worthwhile. The only question now is, what's the payment?

Some of the group are happy with the price, others don't care too much about it, although Leksni and Osul consider the payment arrangement could do with some negotiating.

Eclyndryl purses her lips as she reclines back in her chair. She looks to Leskni and smiles, and then to the rest of the group. She takes a few moments to consider the counter proposal before responding "Very well. If you wish to rediscuss the terms, I'll agree to an 85% share of anything not of cultural value to us, if you will agree to a condition on anonymity. As far as anyone outside of this mountain is concerned, whatever is found inside was found and recovered by House Dul'g. Otherwise 20% in addition to the fire rubies seems considerably fair for what might turn out to be a harmless room"

Osul doesn't sense anything untoward in the way Eclyndryl is handling herself. He doesn't believe her to be withholding any information.

Atlas speaks to his friends, "I'm going to have a hard time keeping this a secret. What's the fun in adventuring if you cannot tell anyone. I would trade 5% for that ability, sticking with 80% us and 20% them. The fire rubies were a nice touch and may very well cover the 'culturally significant' items that we find. There is no way to predict every scenario that we could encounter, so I suggest we take the original deal and we just move forward to see what situation we are in. That's where I'm at. However, Leskni and 'Osul, I do appreciate your efforts!"

House Dul'g can still brag about recovering whatever cultural artifacts are found and not having to risk one Drow life in the process."

He lets them do the money decisions.....He's just happy that some of them got out of the tree... Pushing them too much now would just send them back to the tree and then hiding out and claiming it has nothing to do with what they see as their only job....

DM Rob - "Atlas, you now know what the price of fame is."
Tuesday October 4th, 2016 5:46:06 AM

The group have a quiet chat amongst themselves, and come to the conclusion that the price of fame works out to be around 5%. They're happy with the original 80/20 split and let Eclyndryl know of their approval.

Eclyndryl is happy that agreements have been reached. She stands and walks to each of you to shake your hand "I would think we are all honorable enough in this room to be able to seal an arrangement with a handshake rather than a contract"

Armand then starts the discussion on to "what now?" and "where's the food?"

"Time can be hard to tell when underground" she smiles to Armand "It is currently just after midday. The room we have uncovered is an hours walk through some of our tunnels. A safe travel, I can assure you. You have had a long journey however. Please partake of my hospitality for tonight, and start afresh in the morning. I will have what provisions I can brought here for you"

Eclyndryl goes to the door and opens it. Her honor guard stand on either side of the door, and nearby stand Kyan and Guldor. The two men-in-waiting carry trays of food.

"Kyan and Guldor will be here to meet your needs" she says, looking back to the group and then to her men "Please see that our guests have everything they require"

Perception DC20... Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice she continues to refer to you as "guests" in front of others, but "friends" privately}

The trays are set upon the table to reveal a minor banquet: Purple worm steaks with a cranberry and violet fungus reduction. Lichens and hollow bread that you put a drop of some kind of syrup into before eating. The bread is sweet and buttery the sap is more tangy than sweet. A pitcher of dark red wine and another of fresh water. Good ol' fashioned subsurface food.

Kyan and Guldor bring blankets and pillows for the party to make the room more comfortable.

The party are undisturbed for the remainder of their time in the room. The only time you see a drow is if you open the door to summon Kyan or Guldor.

--------------------------------------------------

After a comfortable (and very quiet) nights rest, there is a knock at the door. It's Kyan.

"Honored guests? Honored guests? The Senior Sister asked that I see if you are ready for the day. I have brought some breakfast for you"

Assuming the party permit their entry, Kyan and Guldor enter with two more trays: breads, fruits and two pitchers. One has some kind of blue milk in it, whilst the other has fresh water.

The guards are still stationed outside the door.

"Will you be needing anything else?" Kyan asks with head bowed.

Glad the negotiations were no longer wasting time, Beordir was looking forward to the rest of the evening. The food they brought in looked incredibly exotic and he was dying to try it. He worried briefly about poison, but decided there were too many factors against it.

The meal was incredible and he had to stop much too soon to keep from eating himself into a stupor. Many years amongst the Hungry Trees had made that a habit. After a couple of hours of digestion he took over a space of the room for stretching, then laid out his bedrolls there.

Time was hard to judge underground and Beordir didn’t sleep easily anyway. Once he woke up for the fifteenth time, he finally started stretching. A bit of weapons drill cleared his mind and he sat down to review spells. Today he chose spells that sought information rather than destruction.

He was not quite finished when breakfast was brought in but it was still welcome when he got around to eating a small meal. While Atlas was packed up first, Beordir was a close second, packing quickly and making himself ready for the day
