DM Rob - "Lets get started, it could be a very long day if we're unlucky."
Wednesday October 5th, 2016 2:26:41 AM

The party enjoy the hospitality of the drow, with most trying out the subsurface food. The blue milk gets mixed reviews.

When everyone is ready (and all morning spell preparations have taken place) Kyan and the honor guard escort the party from the room. Kyan carries one of the everburning torches so that there is sufficient light for you all to see.

Carver looks over the drow carefully, and finds his suspicions confirmed. They all radiate a faint aura of evil.

The passageways you travel through look newly constructed. Very few blemishes can be seen in the stonework. You pass numerous doorways, but in each case the doors are shut. If there are other drow here you are being well and truly kept from them.

It takes just under an hour of travelling through the winding corridors before things start to get interesting.

For starters, it looks like Kyan is escorting the party down a corridor with a dead-end. However on reaching the end of the corridor, he keeps walking, passing right through the wall! The guards gesture for you to follow.

Knowledge Arcana DC26...Highlight to display spoiler: {Permanent Image}
Will Save DC20 ... Highlight to display spoiler: {The wall is an illusion that you can now see straight through}

Ahead, you can see Eclyndryl and Zulok in a discussion. Neither looks to be in a good mood.

If you speak drow... Highlight to display spoiler: {
"Senior Sister, listen to reason. This is a mistake. We should not be entrusting this discovery to surface dwellers. They cannot be trusted"
"I am in charge now, Zulok of Tzzukah. Things will be done my way"
"Your feelings for them are blinding you to the truth, m'lady. You promise them more riches than we can spare, and make us weaker as a result. The fate of our race is in your hands"
"Yes. It is. But I think having allies like these is worth more than gold and gem.
}

Eclyndryl looks and sees you coming. She smiles and then looks back to Zulok. "See that no others come this way while our guests are at work. We do not want them discovered, nor do we want any ... misunderstandings"

Zulok gives a short nod in response and walks past the party, giving a glare to Leskni as he does so.

Eclyndryl does not seem to notice, and speaks to the party "The room in question is just ahead. A hundred feet or so. As you have seen, we have placed an illusory wall to keep prying eyes away from this area to give you some privacy. Naturally, I cannot stay here and wait for your return. I have other duties to attend to, however, my guards will remain here until your return. They will stay here to prevent anyone from following you in, but also to stop anything from being released back."

The passage ahead is different from the ones you have travelled through. The rock is rough and uncut; newly excavated and not yet dressed. At 10ft wide and 10ft high, Carver finds he can walk quite comfortably.

(d20+8 will save of xx against DC 20 --> 20!) Ahhh... very cool, I think to myself.

I approach the guards and offer a sincere, but sad, handshake..... "Well..., it was nice getting to know you. You seem like a nice fellas."

OOC:

Our standing marching order needs some updating, or maybe an "indoors" version. ;) And to add Beordir. Here's what we have today:

Leskni
Owen
Atlas
Armand
Mack
Carver

Pella (hawk) circling the party - 50ft away and 50ft high
Osul (Wildshaped) circling the party - 50ft away and 50ft high

Squeaver will normally be on my right side space permitting; behind me otherwise. I'm fine being wherever, although I have a feeling maybe I should be out front checking for traps? If so:

(d20+21 TrapFinding check of 30)
I also have Rogue Talent: Trap Spotter (PER check within 10' of trap - done by DM?) now.

"Just like home", whispers the human with a smile as he breaches the veil.

He slips in near the rear of the party (what with the not having wings at the moment, and thinking this may be a great opportunity to practice his summoning), and keeps an eye out. Perception: 22

Beordir follows the drow with everyone else and is again disappointed he does not get to see much of the underground village.

The group shuffles together through the underground caverns and Beordir is acutely aware for the echos their passage brings underground. While he is quieter, it’s not by much. Caves never were places I used to hide when hunted. Now I have time to really consider why

Zulok doesn’t seem to have recovered from yesterday’s confrontation and is ludicrously assigned to guard their return passage. However, the illusionary wall is interesting. Wary of not being able to see threats, Beordir moves through with his hand on his weapon and a spell in the forefront of his mind. The wall itself never changes for him as he moves through.

(OOC This is the first marching order I’ve seen that puts the spell casters at the front, but I don’t know the reasoning behind that. As I are one, I think I should be there as well. Also, I assume Osul is walking not wild shaped.

"We need to be careful when we leave. Zulok is NOT happy with the deal that Eclyndryl made with us, I may be reading in more to his anger than is there, but I really wouldn't be that surprised if he tried something when she isn't around. We need to watch our rear in there. If he sees what looks like an easy opportunity to take us out and blame it on whatever is inside I get the impression he might take it.

On the bright side, I'm pretty sure that Eclyndryl is NOT going to betray us, she is sincere in wanting our help"

OOC : as to marching order, I think I'd prefer to NOT be in the front line :-). Its narrow enough here that Pella can't be overhead. In fact, I suspect he can't fly at all in a 10 foot wide corridoor (wingspans are unclear but 10 ft seems pretty tight).

OOC: So, Pella will be as large as he can be and still fly overhead. I suspect that is small (ie, one size category up from his normal tiny) but would like confirmation. He'll be flying above Leskni's head for now

"Does anybody want to be bigger or smaller than normal? I like being small :-)"

Leskni will throw up deathwatch, compehend languages, prestidigitation, message, reduce person and see invisibilty on herself

Atlas watches as the others walk through the wall, but as the first two walk through the image fades and disappears for him. "Interesting illusion."

After Eclyndryl heads out Atlas speaks up, "Mack, up front please. Make sure we don't walk into any traps. I'll be on your heals, so don't set something off and leave it for me to take the damage. Carver, I agree with Leskni, let's keep an eye on our rear. The spell casters will be safe between us...hopefully. You good back there?" Atlas bangs his sword against his shield, shrugs his shoulders some, bobbles his head to make sure he's loose, and says, "Alright Mack, lead us on."

Armand's eyebrows shoot up as the Drow walk through the wall. (knowledge Arcane 6). He is flabbergasted at the event. When the Drow motion them through it he hesitates. (Will save 9). When everyone else starts walking through the wall, Armand swallows hard and closing his eyes walks forward. He bumps into Atlas.

Not understanding the conversation between Eclyndryl and Zulock he watches them intently, trying to get an idea of what's going on from their body language. (Sense Motive 26).

"I don't believe we've ever ventured underground before. I agree with Atlas that Mack should take the lead."

Armand stows his crossbow into his bag of holding and pulls his glaive from the efficient quiver. He casts light on the blade.

(Armand will keep the light going on the glaive. He will cast detect magic at turns at on the door when we come to it. When we come to the door if there is script he will try to decipher it with linguistics and if that fails, will cast Comprehend Languages.)

DM Rob - "I don't believe we've ever ventured underground before"
Thursday October 6th, 2016 3:09:00 AM

Mack approaches the guards to say farewell. Each maintains his rigid formation and stance, barely looking at Mack.

Armand looks at the interation between Eclyndryl and Zulok. Eclyndryl looks to be standing her ground and using her newfound position of authority to have things the way she wants. Zulok may still be coming to terms with the change of drow leadership.

A number of the group 'volunteer' Mack to take the lead. Carver also wants to be up front. That or he will be left drinking from a wineskin for all the good it would do him.

Leskni urges everyone to be alert to Zulok, noting he isn't pleased with the deal that has been arranged with Eclyndryl. He may take the opportunity to pounce when the group look vulnerable. Or, should anything go wrong with this expedition, he may do his darndest to make sure the party get full blame for it.

Leskni throws up a number of cantrips on herself, not sure what to be ready for. Pella flies overhead, small in size.

The marching order (I think I pieced together)
- Mack and Squeaver
- Carver
- Beordir
- Leskni and Pella
- Owen
- Atlas
- Armand
- Osul

Mack is keenly alert for traps, but so far, doesn't think he has spotted any. Well, at least nothing bad has happened so far.

Armand has a light spell cast on his glaive, providing sufficient light to the rear of the party.

Owen looks at the passageway and tries to gauge its age. The newer, fashioned stone looks very new. A few months in age perhaps? The rocky, unworked passage the party in now looks very fresh. The rocks themselves look old (probably like all rocks do!) but the passage appears newly excavated. The drow did say they were expanding their tunnels.

Mack and Beordir do notice some blemishes on the unworked stone ground. It's hard to see, but their eyes are keen. The blemishes are drops of blood! Judging by the patterns, someone has been injured recently and fled back the way the party have come from.

Everyone is on edge. It's been a while since the last time they were in battle, and there's something in the air that promises it won't be long until they're in a fight once more.

The party can see where the tunnel finally bursts into a large room. The room that has confused and fascinated the drow. The reason you were invited...

Aside from the musty atmosphere, there is a definite "old" feel to this chamber. Hewn from rock, the floor is worked to resemble flagstones and the walls are intermittently decorated with mock brickwork. Arrows - some broken, some splintered - litter the cold floor.

Lit torches sit in sconces along the walls, casting flickers of light throughout the open chamber.

Thick spiderwebs cover the ceiling appearing like billowing clouds overhead.

On the other side of the room can be seen massive stone doors with a carving of a spider web covering the entire set of doors. In the centre of the spider web where the doors meet is a small carved stone face. Puffy cheeks and a bulbous nose, it looks almost gnomish.

OOC: I'm not sure if we're in "combat" rounds, but assume we are getting there. So in that case, I probably can't really advance very far as I'm checking for traps which takes time. So I'd advance from AB9 to AC8, and Squeaver would move from AB10 to AC10 and keep watch of the room.

However, let me be a step ahead so you don't hog all the fun while I'm stuck drinking wine. I promise I'll dive out of the way if you need room to get through."

Atlas looks around the room, but doesn't notice much of use. "Well, I guess we should have asked our friends what they encountered down here before we just took off." He chuckles to himself, thinking about how much of a hurry he was in. "Well, if nothing else it seems that we'll be facing some spiders, or maybe a magical spiderweb creating device. Mack, want to check things out for us? I'm right behind you."

Atlas follows Mack, a few steps behind him.

-----------------------------------------
ooc:

Atlas would have been behind Mack in the marching order. He doesn't want to have to climb over Carver to get into the action, where as he can move out of the way more easily for Carver if needed.

Also, I didn't move Atlas on the map because he is now officially moving around with Mack as he checks things out. Let's keep him 2 squares behind Mack as he does so (5 ft space between them).

Hope that all makes sense.

Mack s-l-o-w-l-y encroaches into the chamber. He can't see any signs of traps just yet. Looking at the spent arrows, his keen eyes can see that they are not covered with any dust or cobwebs at all. They look quite fresh. From his advanced position he can now see that there are some sort of markings above the door.

Beordir holds his ground. He nocks an arrow in anticipation of a threat.

Atlas follows behind Mack, trusting that the rogue will spot any traps before triggering them. That, or Atlas has decided to use Mack as a shield.

Leskni casts a spell to detect magic in the room. Her spell extends into the room, but finishes just short of the door. Almost every square in front of her has some sort of aura to it!

Armand casts the same spell and advances forward even further. He sees much the same as Leskni. The entire room has an aura to it. Even the door on the other side of the room has some sort of aura. The arrows and torches, however, have no auras to them.

Carver steps into the room and looks to the torches. The torches are quite normal (non-magical). Likely lit by the drow in anticipation of the party.

Osul moves with Armand, and takes a moment to check out the height of the room. By his best guess, it looks around 15ft high before the cobwebs cover the ceiling. The spiderwebs look unusually thick. It would have taken a long time for them to cover the entire ceiling of this chamber.

Owen is quite happy to stay put. The bloody floor is indication enough that something bad happened here recently.

Carver suggest burning away the cobwebs, whilst Atlas makes the (perhaps logical) assumption that the party are probably going to interupt some spiders.

*GONG* *GONG* *GONG*

And that's when things got serious...

What sounds like a deep bass bell rings three times. On each ring, a different spider appears on the floor of the room at a different position. Not like they climbed down from the ceiling or dropped down. More like "POOF! A spider"

They attack!

S1 skitters across the room to attack Carver! (If Carver has greater than 5ft reach it provokes an AoO. Hit AC26. Carver takes 14pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 4pts Str damage)

S2 follows suit, moving quickly across the room to attack Carver! but its fangs bite nothing but shield! (Miss AC15)

S3 has appeared right beside both Squeaver and Carver. It attacks Carver as well, but misses! (d2=1=Carver in alphabetical order. Miss AC11)

From the other side of the room, the party can hear something talk. The gnomish face on the door is moving its lips and saying something! It's animated!

Leskni... Highlight to display spoiler: {With your Comprehend Languages spell in effect, you can understand the gnomish face: "Hello? Oh what a good year. More people to talk to! Happy day! I hope you don't run away like the others did"}

Armand will move to AA12. Glaive ready. (I'm assuming since he tried to determine the spell, that he will not get to attack spider S2. The Glaive has reach.)

Hearing Leskni call out to the door in common, Armand tries a different tactic. Calling out in Elven, "Hello, uh, door. Do you speak any other languages?"

The spiders were conjured close by, so his bow is useless. Beordir drops it behind him hopefully out of the way. He draws his rapier as he moves forward passing right by Armand and behind Atlas.

He, too, forms defensively up on the nearest spider, attacking it cautiously. In place, he mutters, "Are these illusional?"

From the glimpse he catches, Owen tries to tell what sort of spiders are attacking the group. Knowledge (Nature): 21. Whatever he remembers, he calls out to the party.

The party react quickly to the spiders...

Leskni moves up to Carver and casts a Delay Poison spell on him.

Carver warns the party about the spider venom as he patches himself up. He sings a song about heroism that really helps the party in their attacks.

Osul sets to summoning some reinforcements. Some spiders of his own to play with.

Owen looks at the spiders and tries to determine what they may be. They look natural rather than supernatural. Yes, definitely vermin of some kind. Small in size, poisonous, and likely immune to mind affecting effects. Every other attack looks to work just fine on them though Highlight to display spoiler: {These spiders were custom made by the DM so I can't give you a definitive name or reference for them.}. He can't see what triggered their appearance, but then again, maybe it isn't about sight?

Mack and Squeaver sidestep to flank one of the critters, both drawing spider blood.

Atlas rushes in to attack the spider near Carver, declaring his hopes that he isn't rusty **GONG** Another spider magically appears in the room right next to Squeaver!

Beordir wonders whether the spiders are an illusion or not. The way he skewers one on his rapier leads him to believe they are indeed real. The spider, now well and truly deceased, disappears. Its body no longer visible.

Knowledge Arcana DC25...Highlight to display spoiler: {It vanished in much the same way a summoned creature disappears when slain}

Leskni takes the opportunity to have a conversation with the door. "Do you know who summoned these spiders?" **GONG** Another spider magically appears in the room next to the last one!

"I'm sorry" the gnomish face on the door replies in common now "I didn't catch what you were saying? Summoned what? Those creatures only appeared just now"

Armand continues trying to use his Detect Magic spell to work out how the spiders are appearing. Unfortunately it takes 3 rounds of concentration before a check can be made to determine the school of magic. Does he hold out for another round? He also tries interacting with the door, but this time in elven. The door responds to him in kind.

If you speak elven... Highlight to display spoiler: {"Elven? Oh yes! I speak all manner of languages. It seems only one of you understood the archaic form of undercommon I was speaking, so I thought I'd try something else. Which language would you prefer? I don't want there to be any miscommunication when I make my next guess for the password. I think I have it this time"}

The spiders react...

S1 bites at Carver! (Hit AC25. Carver takes 9pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 3pts Str damage when the Delay Poison spell wears off

S2 also bites at Carver! (Hit AC21. Carver takes 15pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 3pts Str damage when the Delay Poison spell wears off)

S4 bites at Squeaver, but misses! (Miss AC10)

Mack and Squeaver maneuver as one, and do quite a bit of damage to one of the spiders. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Please double-check Squeavers AC. Pretty sure it's more than 1 :) })

Osul summons a spider of his own to flank with Atlas. He tries to focus on what may be leading to the soundings of the gong. There were no ringings this round to study.

Carver's hands are almost as quick as his feet. He heals himself, he sings, he attacks with sword and hoof!

With Osul's spider helping to flank, Atlas manages to land two good slices with his sword.

Beordir is a little confused as to what might be going on. He suspects that the spiders are conjured creatures, and that simply the presence of the party has triggered them.

Armand and Owen each have their own theories as to what is going on. Armand suspects that the door is asking for a password and they've messed it up a few times. Owen suspects that every time someone mentions the name of the creatures that more appear. They may be right. No additional spiders appear this round.

The spiders react...

S1 has two potential victims in range. It bites at Squeaver! (d2=2=Squeaver. Miss AC11)

S2 bites at Carver, sinking its teeth once more into his leg! (Hit AC21. Carver takes 14pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC20 or be Poisoned, taking another 1pts Str damage when the Delay Poison spell wears off)

S4 bites at Squeaver, but misses! That squirrel is hard to hit! (d2=2=Squeaver. Miss AC15)

S5 bites again at Atlas! (d3=1=Atlas. Hit AC24. Atlas takes 13pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 3pts Str damage)

The door looks sad. "I'm not trying to bait you. It's just been so long since I've had anyone to talk to. I really think I know the password though. Is it... pineapple? It's pineapple, isn't it? PINEAPPLE!" There is a long, uncomfortable pause "Rats. Don't worry. I'll get it. You just have to give me more guesses"

Still not sure how to solve this puzzle, Beordir returns his attention to the fight. With all the potential magic around someone is asking for dispel. "I do not have the ability to dispel..yet."

He strides down beside Carver, being careful to keep close to the enemy spiders. As he gets close, he cautiously retrieves a small sachet of colored sand from his pouch and disperses it toward the spiders attacking Carver. He chants a few incantations and beams of multicolored light rush away from him enveloping the two spiders.

Once the spell is done. He suggests to the nearby centaur. "Why don't you fall back and get healed?"

Mack and Squeaver combine to finish S4 off in a coordinated assault.

Carver repeats his actions: healing himself, singing and attacking. The spider bites might just be distracting him enough, as none of his attacks land this time.

Leskni waits to see who is ready for some healing, and seeing Carver's blood already spilling, goes to his aid (OOC: Your conditional action is quite alright)

The magic of this room is beyond Armand. Healing the party is his best course of action for this round.

Osul's spiders (yep, there should be two) both attack one of the other spiders in the room. None of the attacks hit.

Beodir moves very close to the spiders, and tries a Color Spray spell on them but it doesn't look to have any affect whatsoever (Will Saves: 21, 25).

Owen now tries to determine what magic is at play in the room.

Atlas is successful in slicing S5 into two equal portions (OOC: Apologies, I included your attack last round in the damage but forgot to include it in the summary)

The spiders act...

S1 attacks Beordir, but misses! (Miss AC18)

s2 attacks Carver, hitting him once more! (Hit AC23. Carver takes 12pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC20 or be Poisoned, taking another 3pts Str damage when the Delay Poison spell wears off)

It's been a rough 20 seconds for Carver. The spiders look to be able to find the gaps in his armor, yet for some reason just can't land an attack on anyone else.

The good news though is that no further spiders have magically appeared, and even the ones that are still here are quite squishy.

The face on the door looks to be concentrating hard on something.

Squeaver tries attacking on his own, but tooth and claw both miss.

Mack and Leskni both go to heal Carver. Armand channels positive energy to do the same.

Osul steps closer to Carver to help boost the taurs resistances.

Beordir repositions himself, dodging an attack as he does so. With his concentration on his defenses, his attack suffers and misses.

Carver maintains his song, even with the knowledge that there is potent poison ready to take effect in his bloodstream. Things may sound bleak, however he does have a few things going for him. First is Leskni's Delay Poison spell which is holding the poison at bay. And since the poison is all of the same type, just one Neutralise Poison spell would cure it all before it did any damage at all. Perhaps after the combat a friendly Bloodwitch will treat the venom?

Osul's spiders attack, and fortunately one does land a bite. Its target does not look affected by the venomous bite (Fort Save vs DC16: 16=Pass).

The spiders act...

S1 bites at Beordir! (Hit AC28. Crit not confirmed on AC20. Beordir takes 14pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 2pts Str damage)

S2 attacks Osul's summoned spider! (Hit AC17. Spider takes 12pts damage + must make a Fort Save vs DC18 or be Poisoned, taking 3pts Str damage)

The battle is 12 against 2. Surely the experienced party can overcome two pesky vermin.

Thankfully changing positions did not result in difficulty. Beordir settles into his new location and prepares to attack again. Apparently his movement attracted the attention of one of the spiders as it bit down on his leg.

Beordir grits his teeth against the injury but feels the poison seep into his veins and turns his mind firmly away from his most recent encounter with spiders.

In a better position, he maintains some of his defense, and attempts to finish off the spider that others had injured but is too shaken to prevail. After his attack, he steps back out of range to acquire an antitoxin from his pouch.

Owen is glad the creatures have stopped appearing. He's pretty sure he was right about what triggered the summoning, but doesn't want to test his theory any more.

DM Rob - "Maybe I should say the word again so that I can get some more action over here?"

The party start to coordinate their attacks and work as a group. In doing so, they quickly overcome the last 2 spiders. The bodies of the vermin disappear once slain.

The party are now able to take a moment to get their bearings and work out a plan.

Owen looks over the auras of the room and uses his knowledge of things arcane to aid him.

The room has a Conjuration(Summoning) aura to it. It detects similarly to that of a summon monster spell but it has been altered in some way.

The carved stone face has an Illusion(Glamer) aura to it. Based on the way it is behaving, it is some sort of advanced Magic Mouth or Programmed Illusion.

"Can you give me a clue? I'm sure I can guess the password if you just give me a clue" the stone face on the door pleads.

The door just said that it wanted to talk to us, and that other people had run away (probably the Drow). No clues there.

Could somebody just see if the door can be opened? Pick the lock or something?. It may have NOTHING to do with anything and just be a distraction. The gongs sounded before we said anything to the door"

"If we have the anti-toxin, it's better to take it before the poison comes into full effect. So should I take it now, or should I let the poison do it's dirty deed and then try to use more magic to correct it's problems?
And Mack, the basic knowledge I received in training stated, "A summoned creature while here physically for a time, reverts to whence it came once it's time in ended." I was always under the impression that meant whether it's time expired, was dismissed or was killed. Since we killed these spiders, their time expired in a rather forcible manner."

If we get close to the time that delay poison is going to expire, Carver will take the anti-toxin unless someone else has a better idea.

They were just due to us saying that 8 legged word. However, I expect more trouble in other forms if we don't solve this riddle. Mack wonders if because the spiders have disappeared whether that means their poison has as well. An interesting thought. Would he be willing to risk Carver's health to find out?

Beordir offers some antitoxin to Carver, and with permission, Osul also tends to Carver's bites (Carver will receive a +4 competence bonus on his next save vs the poison, and an additional +5 alchemical bonus if he uses the anti-toxin at the time)

Atlas has taken a few hits and asks if anyone could treat some of his wounds.

Armand is able to channel some divine power to heal 15pts of damage to everyone nearby.

Leskni cautions not drinking the antitoxin vials just yet. To get their benefit an affected person would need to wait until the Delay Poison spell was about to end.

There is much interest in what the door said to Leskni when it first started talking. Leskni is able to perfectly recall the details (since it only happened about one minute ago: "Hello? Oh what a good year. More people to talk to! Happy day! I hope you don't run away like the others did"

Owen decides to have a closer look at the symbols above the door that Mack saw earlier. It looks like gibberish to him. Definitely a very old (archaic?) form of Undercommon or WoldianBelow. He deduces that one of the symbols means "password" (OOC: Linguistics checks are made privately by the DM, so I've made a secret roll for you)

Fortunately Leskni's Comprehend Languages spell is still in effect. She is able to translate the symbols quite easily: "The password is spider"

Mack can't see any hinges, handles or keyholes on the door. There is a seam down the middle, so he decides that might be the place to start. Doing so places him face-to-face with the gnomish face. "Wow, you're getting very close to me. Are you going to whisper a clue? I think I'm ready to guess again. Is the password... coconut?" Trying to forcibly open or disable this door could take a little while, but looks doable.

Things were going quite well at this point, but Carver then deduces that since the party killed the spiders... ***GONG***

The party work together to quickly overcome the spider.

The gnomish face on the door pays attention to the party banter, and looks particularly happy when Armand notes that the creatures they have been fighting are the password.

"Oh that's such a good clue! I think I have it now! Arachnid? Vermin? Bug? Critter? Spider?"

As the face says spider it starts to slowly meld into the door "That's it! Spider! Spider is the password! Spider, spider, spider ..." Once the face has completely melded with the door, the doors open! The heavy stone rumbles against the ground as the doors part open, away from the party.

Ahead can be seen a very dark passageway. The light that shines from this room seems to be absorbed by the passageway.

Osul retrieves the CLW wand and passes it to Armand.

Beordir wonders how the drow were unable to read the writing over the door. The arrowheads on the ground would suggest they didn't understand the puzzle and kept creating spiders.

Leskni cracks a sunrod and tosses it down the passageway. Armand does the same with one of the lit torches.

Carver is thanked for his efforts by Atlas and Mack. Despite taking a beating, he kept up the performance for the benefit of all.

Everyone eagerly look on to see what is revealed.

The passage is quite interesting. The walls (and floor and ceiling) look to be made of polished obsidian of the blackest black. There are no magical auras, but the obsidian is so dark that light seems to be absorbed into it. Everything feels darker, despite the light the party have created.

The passage is quite straight, but nothing can be seen any more than 40ft ahead.

Mack can't see any traps in the light that has been created.

Owen

If Squeaver is in the way here, he can certainly go anywhere in the line. He's definitely not a front line fighter by any means. And he moves fast, so can get in from the back, or middle, if he needs to. Maybe he should be in back, with his keen senses, to give the spellcasters a little more buffer?

I'm OK if you want to take a run down the tunnel to check things out, but I still want Mack looking for traps and I still thinking our marching order should remain the same. You can run faster and further than me, so by being back further we have a better chance of us both getting a quick attack in rather than me lagging behind because I start out behind even further. Does that make sense? It didn't come out exactly how I see it in my head."

He then follows Mack, "This darkness seems unnatural. Maybe Squeaver should go to the back so we don't step on him?" Atlas keeps his eyes peeled (29...natural 20) as they go down the corridor.

Carver has the anti-toxin in hand. He could take it now, but the effects of the Delay Poison will last significantly longer. The Delay Poison cannot be dismissed early either. If Carver wishes to have the poison in his system neutralized before any ill effects, he will need someone to cast a spell, or, time taking the anti-toxin in a few hours time.

Mack advances slowly, picking up the sunrod and tossing it further ahead.

The party order:
Mack
Squeaver (next to or behind Mack)
Atlas
Carver
Beordir
Leskni
Pella (hawk - reduced to small?) circling near Leskni's head?
Owen
Armand
Osul (in human form)

Owen explains that it is the natural construction of the passage and its materials that make things dark. There are no magical auras that indicate anything else.

Everyone is alert. The party venture in some 40ft before anyone sees anything out of the ordinary.

In the middle of the passage there looks to be .. smoke? A small puff of white smoke, that slowly takes on a more solid form. Gradually the form becomes more defined, and the party see before them a ghostly apparition of a drow child. A girl of perhaps 10 years old.

"Are you here to save us?" she asks. Her voice is that of a young child, but has a slight echo to it.

Osul, Atlas and Mack notice that she looks to be wearing a long white dress, but no shoes. Her long hair is braided and her large, soulful eyes are looking directly at the party. She looks sad.

Atlas involuntarily shivers at the sight of the girl. She sounds so sad. It feels genuine.

Carver has dealt with spirits before, and suspects that perhaps Lord Gargul has played a hand in this encounter. Could this be a step on the path to becomming a Grim?

Armand looks about the corridor. It is some 20ft wide and the party have come about 40ft in from the door. There is plenty of room for people to move about.

Armand and Owen try to discern exactly what this spirit is. She is most certainly undead, that much is certain. They are conflicted as to what exactly. She shows signs of being a ghost, but also of a demiurge - an undead whose very touch can cause death.

Beordir and Osul keep a watch on the rest of the corridor. This ghost girl might just be a distraction after all. They detect no signs of anything approaching them in the dim light.

Leskni, Carver and Mack are all eager to help - if only the child would tell them more.

Mack reaches out his hand as a gesture, which only serves to elicit a loud, echoing scream from the girl: "DON'T TOUCH ME!" The girl recoils away from Mack, before speaking in a softer tone "I don't want to hurt you"

The ghost girl looks down at her translucent feet "My name is Mya. There are lots of us here. But we can’t leave. She won’t let us"

Atlas nods at 'Osul's question, "I sure do. 'I wait and I watch.' Interesting. I personally don't think we should wait here for her to come back. It could be days for all we know. Let's investigate further and if we need to we can always come back. Anyone opposed?"

"Well, that is very ominous. We should definitely proceed.

Can anybody cast a circle of protection from evil? That seems like a very good precaution right about now.

I'm still VERY surprised that everybody here is speaking common."

Some entity is approaching. The girl is much worried about what ever it is.

Beordir responds to Leskni, ”I can only protect an individual, not yet a group.” That being the case, he proceeds to incant that very spell upon himself before looking around warily.

Carver, is a bit worried for the young spirit as it flees....
"Is there something that feeds on spirits that anyone knows? I can't recall, but then again I was always more interested the martial side my learning that getting all of the other information about stuff.
And Leskni, are you sure that Mya was even speaking out loud and not telepathically? Sure her lips may have been moving, but it may just have been a reflex of the spirit form."

Carver shakes his head when asked about casting a spell.... "I can do a few minor magics but that spell is currently beyond my abilities..."

Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 50/50 CMD 17 Character Sheet  d20+7=18 ;

Armand considers the message the demiurge left. "How not reassuring...and tantalizingly uninformative."

He pauses and looks at Leskni, "Do you mean Magical Circle against Evil? I'm afraid I have not asked Lord Gargul for that spell, plus it would be stationary and we have more hallway to traverse."

He roots around in his pouch and then kneels near where the spirit left her message. He takes out the Goblin Chalk 'Osul gave him and draws the eye of Gargul upon the floor. (Goblin Chalk, only visible to those with darkvision).

He stands and nods to Carver. "I'm not sure what would feed on a spirit? Do you think something is feeding on spirits? That demiurge just says they are being kept here, not being fed upon." He scratches his chin as he resumes his place in line while motioning to the others that he is ready to be on the way.

"Though one wonders, is the 'she' the spirit spoke of keeping the undead here and not letting them leave, thus trapping them and not allowing them to roam the Wold....or is the 'she' merely keeping surviving Drow here and slowly they are dying and becoming undead. Still it is interesting, how can someone keep an incorporeal spirit from just going where they will, especially now that we've opened the door." Armand glances back toward the doorway to make sure it is still open.

He tries to recall what he knows about things that could create a demiurge (from the previous knowledge religion check of 26 when he first saw it). But also tries to think of what could control other undead. knowledge religion 18 (d20+7)

DM Rob - "How not reassuring...and tantalizingly uninformative."
Tuesday October 25th, 2016 3:22:59 AM

With Mya's disappearance the party come to the decision not to take the opportunity to rest. Sure, Mya said it was safe, but noone is willing to trust an undead just yet.

Leskni isn't sure how it is that everything knows the common-tongue. Granted, most sentient creatures do. Carver then makes quite an astute suggestion - was Mya actually talking or was she using telepathy?

Osul senses a lot of fear in Mya, but he doesn't suspect she is trying to deceive the party. The words left where Mya stood are certainly ominous, and Atlas thinks it prudent the group keep moving.

Suggestions are made about Protection from Evil. Beordir takes the opportuntiy to protect himself with the spell. Armand unfortunately doesn't have the Magic Circle version of it prepared (Highlight to display spoiler: {You may want to take this to the Rules forum. Personally I had thought that Magic Circle against XXXX moved with the subject, and it was only the alternate version of the spell that was immobile}).

Armand knows well that a demiurge is an undead creature, usually created of a once living evil person. He also recalls that they usually stay within a few miles of the place where they died. As to what could control one, even the simplest of necromancers have spells that allow them to control or command undead. And one needn't even be a necromancer to learn those spells. There are far too many creatures out there with access to such spells and abilities that without further information, Armand cannot deduce anything more specific.

It takes some effort to get the chalk to stick the the obsidian, but Armand does make the mark of Gargul.

Beordir considers the thought of something feeding on spirits. Nothing specific comes to mind, but there are many creatures out there that feed on the essence of others.

Mack is ready to lead the group once more with Owen suggesting the group keep an eye out for any more terrors.

Mack doesn't see any signs that anything has travelled this passage in recent times. No footprints, scuff marks, or debris.

After another 40ft or so (for a total passage length of a little over 80ft), Mack can see that the passageway ends with a large, hinged wooden door. The door has thick iron bands across it to reinforce it. There doesn't look to be a keyhole or lock of any kind. If Mack wants to open it, he will simply have to push against it. Hard.

Atlas laughs as Mack prepares to push on the door, but he does take a step closer to grab him if needed. However, he assumes that someone else is more than likely going to have to do the pushing. Then a thought occurs to him, "Anyone want to check for magic on this door before we try opening it?" As Atlas says this, he looks over the door one more time to make sure they didn't miss anything.

If Mack is unable to open the door then Atlas steps aside for Carver to kick it open. "Carver, I'm pretty sure you'll be better at this than I will be."

Perception 11, (d20+4).

Yet again Armand wonders if perhaps some goggles of darkvision would not have been prudent to purchase. Surely he could have gotten a loan from someone. Maybe Tom Branif, he certainly had enough money to buy those fancy clothes...but then again he seemed to owe a good deal of money to various people at The Tree. Armand shakes himself and again looks around.

'Need to keep your head in the game Armand, now is not the time for fanciful imaginings.' He thinks to himself.
