The Hill Guardians

The Hill......
Tuesday September 27th, 2016 4:27:30 PM

The Heroes see the hill, it's not a huge hill, not a small hill, it's just a hill. The opening where the field is, that they can see from where they currently are standing, looks to be maybe 3/4 of a mile across, with the hill in the middle maybe 150' tall. It's covered in field grass with the seed stalks already dead and falling off, having released their seeds a few weeks ago.
With everyone doing their best to search the near by area without entering the field, a few notice that no large animals, for that matter no medium or small animals seem to be in the field that they can see, Up the side of the hill, a couple rabbits can be seen by those with unusually keen eye sight.
The Heroes can go left, right, or straight up the hill side, actions?

I think going up will give a better view of the surroundings, besides I think I saw a rabbit up there, Lanliss says and proceeds to point his finger at the direction of the hill.

"Rabbit?! Funny you mention a rabbit, I was just recalling an old orcish fable about a rabbit and a tortoise."

"You see ... this rabbit mockingly challenged the tortoise to a race, being quite confident he would win. The tortoise accepted his challenge and so the rabbit immediately raced off leaving the tortoise in his dust. No longer able to see the tortoise behind him, the overly confident rabbit decides to take a nap. Unbeknownst to the slumbering rabbit, the persistent tortoise catches up and finds the rabbit asleep. He approaches his helpless opponent and clamps his powerful jaws down upon his leg; snapping the bone! The rabbit awakes in terror, bleeding from his wounds; the tortoise anchoring his victim, not allowing him flee. The tortoise's friends also descend upon the rabbit, tearing him limb from limb ...devouring his tasty flesh as he screamed on in agony. The tortoise then goes on to win the race. The moral of the story ... eliminate your enemies and there's no race you won't win."

After a short pause, he continues, "That's quite a brutal story ... of course, most orcish tales are!"

"Brutal but true." He says to Emrys.

Brom concurs with Lanliss' idea. He moves cautiously up the hill, trying to stay low. If there is nothing at the top, he uses the height to scan the area for anything.

Barratore will move up the hill just to the left of Brom. His shield is stowed so that both of his hands are free, allowing him to pull his bow or blade, dependent on what might occur as they head up the hill. The minotaur has no comment on the story Emrys recited, mostly he could not figure out how it fit this particular situation. the group was not in a race, at least not one he knew of. Thoroughly distracted by it all, Barratore notices little beyond the immediate group

Perception 7

The Hill......
Wednesday September 28th, 2016 4:07:11 PM

The Heroes discover that the hill isn't really much of a hill as they work their way to the top of it. As they make their way up, they scare off some rabbits and a couple of what looked like woodchucks.
Standing on top of the hill, it has a very shallow crest to it. Looking around, the opening in the forest appears to be a perfect circle with the hill top in the exact middle.
Something, you're not sure just what gives the Heroes the feeling that this hill and it's opening are not truly natural in nature......

"I know what you mean. I didn't notice it at first. My thoughts were on rabbits and then of a savory, pepper rabbit stew for dinner. However you are correct to wonder, dear Evaris. Across countless cultures, both present and ancient, artificial mounds served as places of burial, foundations for important structures ... both mystical and mundane. This hill could have served as a kind of fortification. With all the many wars and invasions of this land, I'd say such structure would be warranted."

The tracker is pulled out, so everyone can see it. once the hand holding steadies the pointer of it slowly rotates, first drifting to the left going fully around three times. Then it drifts to the right a few times before beginning to drift back to the left. Watching it for almost five minutes, there is no discernible pattern to it's rotations.
As people are looking around, a foxes tail is seen disappearing into the side of the hill about 2/3 of the way down the side to the west-south westerly direction.

The Heroes make a couple decisions, a few of them mark the location where the fox seemed to disappear in their minds, but as a group they head down the hill to the north. About half way down the tracker stops spinning round and round and settles down to point to at the hill again. Walking around the edge of the woods, first to the east, then to the south and finally to the west, the tracker stays pointed directly to the center of the hill.
The Heroes get to the edge of the woods, in a direct line from the hill top to where the fox looked to have vanished. Walking back towards the top of the hill, the Heroes can see the spot where the fox ducked out of sight and three steps before they reach the hole, it's noticed that the tracker begins to spin once again.

Evaris may have the right of it. Some ancient cultures and religions believed that the setting sun was the end. Perhaps this was built as a refuge or shelter for when the sun set, and will open for a time, at that time. If someone wishes to try and shimmy in on their own, that is their choice, but I would not deem it smart to do so when the rest of the group would take a while to get in should something happen.

Perhaps we should look around the area a little more, but plan to be back here before sunset. We could throw a detect magic to see if anything stands out up here or in the mouth of the hole?

Ideas you say? well, we could dig it out. Or... It's a bit over the top and uses a hefty spell, but....I could summon a nice sized earth elemental to dig it out quickly and move the ground for us. And if there is a trap on the opening he would likely set it off, and not us. It would seem wise to get in there before the sun sets completely, although i do have a wand to accomodate anyone that needs a darkvision.

The Hill in the morning.....
Thursday October 6th, 2016 3:57:54 PM

The Heroes set watches and the evening slides by, nothing more is seen of that fox that someone says they saw. As dawn approaches the evening mist settles to the ground and the grass becomes wet. (Any action requires a reflex save of 12 or you take a -1 on whatever action was taken)(remember a nat 1 still fails)
The light breaks in the eastern skies and the "pathway" has once again vanished into history. The hole is still in the side of the hill, and is very dark and foreboding....
The Heroes are gathered near it's mouth, Now What?

A new day means new spells, and Evaris tweaks his to be more conducive to underground exploration.

And, since he has them available, he treats his companions to a Heroes' Feast, then casts a Divination on whether we need to go into that hole in the hill.

Unless Evaris says that her divination advises us not to bother with the hole, Velarin waits for everyone to move back from the area, and then casts Summon Monster 5(reflex save 16) to produce a large earth elemental(the spell doesn't specifically mention using the elemental to clear areas of the ground, but based on it's size, strength, and affinity for the ground, as well as it's ability and connection when dealing with earth, I would think it would be well within it's capabilities, and easily at that. Dm discretion). Upon it's arrival, Velarin will direct it to completely clear away the earth from around the entrance and the stairs. If more is revealed as it does so, Velarin will direct it to keep clearing those areas until the spell expires.

Emrys is tickled that Evaris is so eager to try his hand at divination. He is pleased to see the yoke of being the group's diviner and loremaster is also being carried by others. Now if only he can get Brom to start brewing potions, he can then dedicate time to more altruistic pursuits like his grooming rituals and writing a chapter or two of his book, 'Elderberries of Wrath.'

He eagerly awaits the results of everyone's work after enjoying a wonderful breakfast, thanks to Evaris.

The Hill in the morning.....  d100=45 ;

Evaris preforms a small ceremony, while casting the Divination. He asks the question, the reply given "Should you venture into the hill, no, Need to venture into the hill for your quest, yes"
He makes the answer known to the rest of the Heroes gathered around, waiting to hear what the reply was.
With the answer known Velarin, taps into his magical knowledge and summons forth an Elemental....
The elemental, that seems to be made out of rocks and dirt, listens as Velarin speaks to it in Terran.
The Elemental rumbles over to the place where the opening used to be, and digs in with it's arm like appendages.
As it reaches about 15 feet down into the hillside, following what looks like the remains of a set of stairs, a large block of stone shifts and activates a long-forgotten spell that calls a towering, corpulent beast that has the hideous head of a boar and arms ending in fatty, four-fingered hands! The elemental gets backhanded as the creature expands into the Wold as it stretches. The elemental crashes to the ground 100' away.

His hand becomes a withered and gnarled claw. With it, he tears a hole in the thin veil that separates the Living Wold and the Realm of Shadow.

At this point, what V does depends upon where the individual party members are.)

The demons are surrounding those still on the side of the hill, each is about 40 feet from the opening in the hillside.
Those Heroes that were dazed are no longer still dazed.

Edson is still standing near the opening.....
Baslim runs for the woods..
Lanliss runs for the woods as well.
Velarin says running is useless and unleashes and unleashes a a lightning bolt on the "group" to the west.
Barratore Steps up next to Brom, who recovers from being dazed and readies to attack
Evaris casts a Magic Circle vs Evil around those still on the hill.
Brom readies an attack as well.
Emyrs gets ready to shadow walk, but only three, including himself have reached the woods...

The four groups of Vrocks charge those at the opening.
The lightning bolt strikes the west group and all but one vanishes and when the flash is over from the lightning bolt there is only one wounded Vrock left to the west.
As the Vrocks reach 20 feet from the opening, a green beam from deep within shoots straight out and then splits, into four smaller beams, each of which hits a group and then there is a voice heard radiating from out of the hole.
"Demon, a Deal is a Deal, No Help allowed."
Spellcraft DC 24 Highlight to display spoiler: { its a form of Dismissal, that targets an area}
All of the Vrocks are gone, seemingly as if never there.
From the far side of the hill, a scream of rage can be heard......

Emrys is confused ... he thought his dazed friends had shook it off and run with them to the treeline (I thought the daze lasted only 1 round). Now he finds that all his friends aren't with him, that the bulk of the group is still back at the hole in the hill. Where did this disconnect from reality come from ... maybe the powers that be havent been getting enough sleep at night. Something to ponder next time he finds himself asleep on his comfortable parlor chair.

However now, he is snapped back to reality and he isn't sure what to do. He wasn't opening a portal to the shadow realm without the others. So he turns and runs back to his friends at the hillside.

The Heroes start for the sound of the screaming Demon, Barratore rushes towards the top of the hill. As he reaches the top, he sets himself to attack if the chance arrives....
To his surprise the chance does come, as the Demon appears right next to him, as he teleported to the top of the hill to set up his next action.
As the Demon appeared, Barratore could see that it was in such a bad condition, that it's right arm was hanging useless and it's side was poked full of holes. He took all of this in as he reacted to it's arrival, unsure how well a strike it was, it just didn't matter, because the swing cleaved the demon from the waist to the shoulder causing the Demon to fall apart in two halves.

"Then who or what did? Can we assume our friend in the hole? Why hasn't this thing poofed back to it's appropriate plane?"(Knowledge arcane, spellcraft, planes 21,28,15 to guess)

"Perhaps Brom, Barratore, and a couple others might go take a look at where it was to see if evidence of what transpired is still about. Perhaps one or all of our divine casters can take a look at the vile creature and it's wounds for a clue as to what happened, while I cast Detect Magic upon it." Which V does.

"Either way, it looks like we are going underground momentarily. we should heal up to the best of our abilities before doing so. I have used a significant amount of my spell resources already, and I imagine many of us will have by the time the group is mostly back to normal. Evaris remembers some things from his teachings.
1st, While creatures summoned to the Wold vanish when killed or dismissed.
2nd, Creatures that manage to get to the Wold without being summoned, are here. As in when they die, their remains stay behind.
Looking at the body of the Demon, those who were attacking with weapons can see where they did the damage during the fight. And the casters can imagine the spells they cast doing the rest of the damage. Yes it was a tough beast, but maybe when it blinded, or at least tried to blind everyone, it was in desperation to save itself....
With the body here at the top of the hill, with in a few feet of where the Heroes stood just yesterday, they can see the area around the opening, and the rest is the same....

Barratore, if he can, reaches in and grabs the shiny green thing. If he cannot simply reach it, he encourages Brom to crawl in and get it

"Look what we have here." Barratore will hold out the object for Emrys and V to see.

Above and Below the hill.....
Tuesday October 25th, 2016 5:07:39 PM

On top of the hill, the discussion continues about what to do with the Demon's corpse.
Below the hill, light is thrown into the buried chamber, and a detect magic is cast. At the same time a large hand reaches into the opening....
The green shiny thing, by feel is a cube bigger than the hand can grasp, so the hand is removed.
At that point, the hero who cast Detect Magic can see some quickly fading magic residue. The types detected are Universal and Transmutation.
A closer look into the opening, it appears that the green is a cube shaped chunk of Emerald.
A few more minutes work the opening is big enough one of the "normal" sized heroes can squeeze in far enough to reach the gem stone.
By the time the opening is that size, all magic from the area has faded completely away.....

If Barratore steps aside, Edson will reach i and grab the emerald. He will hand it over to Barratore once out of the hole.

Evaris glances up toward the top of the hill. "I'm not even sure how you would dispose of a demon corpse," he says. "Aren't they immune to fire?"

Brom moves the rubble away to make it possible for Edson to get in and reach the emerald. He waits patiently as the nimble man does his job.

"Oh. You're just going to.... You're just going to grab it. Bare-handed. Okay, then." Baslim starts rummaging through his healer's kit, prepared to heal whatever horrible damages might occur.

Barratore looks over at Shepard quizically. "How else would we grab it?" He looks back to Edson to see if his prompting has caused unnecessary pain for the man.

"Only one way to find out on the corpse. Set it aflame and see if it catches. I can tell you though, destroying creatures remains with fire takes a might good sized and hot fire. I don't have that type of sustainable burning capability with with. Gonna take more than a few torches or a little fireball spell."

"It sounds a bit untidy and I despise passing the buck, but we could just drag the remains into the Shadow Realm and leave it there. It's a tad extreme, but we can't allow this corpse to befoul and corrupt the land. Just imagine what would happen to a poor creature that tries to eat it!"

Above and Below the hill.....
Wednesday October 26th, 2016 5:18:08 PM

A serious discussion continues about the Demon's corpse on top of the hill, it is joined by the rest of the Heroes as they retrieved a cube of emerald that is about one foot to a side. It weights quite a bit, but some of the heroes are stronger than the rest and can carry it easily.. Behind the shattered block of granite was bedrock with a niche just slightly larger than the emerald they took out of it.
On top of the hill, burning the corpse was dismissed as the demon was fire resistant, shifting it to the shadow realm was discussed, and no one answer has been come up with....

Velarin is about to yell out as he briefly sees the magic upon the Emerald, but stops himself as the stone is grasped and the magic dissipates. "Well, until you touched the cube, it and probably more, was magical. I think touching it likely negated it. It appears we have apretty, and hopefully valuable rock. Perhaps it will be of further use."

"I'm good with dropping him off in the shadow realm. Can't burn him or anything else, unless you want to cut his head off and take it with...rather not. So let's drop him in shadow world. After that, are we ready to go dungeoneering? Perhaps while the body is dealt with, those of you that can find traps would be good enough to take a look, and also see how to get us inside this thing? Unless perhaps the cube was the only thing here."

Yes Velarin perhaps we can check the hole and see if there is more than meets the eye.
Lanliss begins to inspect the place as the hole might be an entrance to a valuable secret dungeon.

Barratore stands back a bit with Brom. His mind was on where the voice came from as well several other topics. With the voice came a great deal of help and turned the tide of that particular battle and as his mind work, his mouth does as well. "Where did our assistance come from. Green beams, could they have come from this cube?"

"Emrys, can you feel the ley lines and what about the Doo Hicky Pointer thing? What is it doing now?"

"Day is still relatively young, maybe Brom and eye could run a circle about the place and hopefully find a beastie or ten?"

"Where did that fox go? Didin't you all say you saw one go into that hole?"

Not sure a flamestrike would do it Evaris. I think the shadow route is best at this point. definitely don't want to play with him again.

Yes Barratore, appears to be more questions than answers. The cube is green, so the green rays may make sense, and I saw it briefly hold magic, which could have been used up once it's purpose was fulfilled, and or taken possession of by touch. As far as the fox goes, several people saw it, so it either went in somewhere, or was an illusion created by something to draw our attention to the spot we are at. Either way, Lanliss and Edson should hopefully find out shortly if there is more to this hole than meets the untrained eye. Should that provide nothing more, it appears that some sort of structure is buried here, and perhaps just needs more unearthing. If they find nothing, I would suggest resting and recovering tonight, and i will prepare to have a couple large earth elementals do some excavation tomorrow unless anyone can do some now, or has a better idea.

Another good point Barratore. What's the pointer doo hicky doing now Emrys, and is the leyline still intact? Is it possible for a demon to be a source of or powering a ley line? we may have just changed things. Not seeing a downside to the two of you taking a spiral jog around the area if you wish Barratore, perhaps there is more here than meets the eye. and for that matter, I think I will take the previous suggestion of an airborne view now.

Velarin casts fly and starts ascending for a good aerial overview of the area.
