The Cave

What Does the Fox Say? (SteveK)
Thursday October 27th, 2016 6:44:04 PM

The emerald cube no longer has magical properties (which is confirmed by Veleran and any other spellcasters), but it is certainly worth something! If only anyone knew anything about appraisals! (Hint, hint)

Lots of suggestions are made for the corpse of the demon, but no one tries anything, and the corpulent body lies where it lays. ...

The heroes who look into the hole can actilually see a darkness deeper than just a dirt hole. It looks like the place where the fox went down, reveals a buried staircase and a hole on the other side. It looks like a bit more digging is in store for the team if they want to find where the fox went.

A look at the Witches Bauble determines it is pointing into the side of the hill!

An aerial view doesn't give Velarian any more information.

Brom continues to clear the rubble from the entrance. He keeps working until the opening is clear or large enough for Barratore to enter. This wasn't a fight, but he did like manual labor. It reminded him of his times at the docks and the memory of the salty breeze on his face goes through his mind as he works.

"a deeper hole" Edson states back to the others as he climbs out of the hole. " Let me see the gem..." he says to Barratore. "I'll get a feel for it. "

He examines the gem when he gets ahold of it again.

After Barratore makes a circuit about the hill inside of the tree line he joins Brom at the hole where Brom is working to clear debris and dirt away. "Looks like a good shovel is something I'll need to start packing. Maybe a pick as well." Barratore says with some humor. Going by hand is a pain and slow. "How far back is the village? Someone want to make a run for some shovels?"

Edson had the emerald in hand as it were and Barratore calls over in between scoops of dirt and moving rock, "worth keeping Edson?"

A Dark Corridor (SteveK)
Friday October 28th, 2016 9:09:09 PM

Edson is able to assess the one foot block of green as pure jade, -and worth a small fortune! (Each hero gets 1500gp)

Brom likes manual work and Barratore likes to watch Brom do manual work. Despite the minotaur's 'helpful' suggestions, the heroes are soon able to break through into a hole beyond. It looks like a corridor of worked stone that curves clockwise into the hill. The corridor is pitch black, the heroes need to make their own light source before continuing...

The corridor is ten foot wide, and can have one Minotaur or two medium heroes side by side...

Trapfinding 29

A Dark Corridor of Faces (SteveK)
Monday October 31st, 2016 8:04:03 PM

Edson and Lanliss go side by side checking for traps. The light from the pebble gives the trap hunters about ten feet of light and 20 feet of harder to find things in shadow. But by moving slowly and checking constantly, they are able to ensure the party doesn't run into anything dangerous.

Brom and Velarin (with the Light pebble) goes next with Barratore behind the barbarian.

Emrys and Baslim walk after the Minotaur.

And Evaris takes the rear.

(Addendum). Emrys and Velarin are still worried about the demon's body and want to get rid of it. However, with the friends capable of moving the body moving into the tunnel and the bard and wizard unwilling to let them go by themselves, the demon body is left on the hilltop. )
.....

The corridor is ten foot wide, made of stone blocks, and it spirals clockwise. It takes five agonizing minutes to search and move 500 feet in the near darkness. Every step could be a trap, every stone could reveal an enemy. After 500 feet, the floor, walls, and ceiling changes and are now carved in Noble Race faces contorted in agony and the carvings go around the curve and out of sight.

Edson sees there are many holes and openings in the faces, anything could be behind them!

Lanliss sees this is a multi-set trap! Some holes look like spikes, some darts, some gas or acid. The trap triggers if any corporal body Small or larger is in the face area The control must be beyond the curve of the corridor and somewhere in the darkness beyond.

Barratore only has one method to disarm traps, setting them off. That almost never being a good idea, he remains where he is. "Can you tell if the traps can sense an ivisible person or can anyone become smaller than small?"

A Dark Corridor of Faces (SteveK)
Tuesday November 1st, 2016 8:07:50 PM

In the dark with a single small pebble of light, the heroes are crowded into the spiraling corridor and stopped at the face carvings.

Thoughts and suggestions are sent to Edson and Lanliss on how to get past these traps. A summoned creature to set them off? Smaller than small? Some form of magic to not be detected by the magical trap sensors?

Lanliss looks carefully. It looks to him that the only way to disarm the trap is from the other side (around the bend and in the dark) or that he could try to disarm each of the traps separately. around the curve of the corridor. He can determine that the sensors are magical, and there is no guarantee if it will trigger on an invisible person or not.

Emrys can glance at the Witches Bauble, and it still points into the dark of the hill...

Hmmm...how bout a couple tests. Velarin pulls out his everburning torch, and throws it down the hallway to see if it sets anything off (24 att roll). Following that, the wizard will cast detect magic to get a feel for the power of the spell if it is a spell, and what it may do. following that, he will offer up a few options.

I could wall of force one side of the hallway to prevent that side from making an impact, and if someone could wall the other side, or perhaps even use big deadly ugly outside as a shield from the other side, might greatly lessen the effect

Another option is I could Dim Door someone to the curve in the hallway, and get them a good chunk of the way there. Problem is they would now have traps on both sides of them, and we don't know what lays around the bend.

Third option is I could drop a black tentacles in the hallway and see what happens.

Or we could wait until tomorrow and go in fully prepared.

Trap Conundrum (SteveK)
Wednesday November 2nd, 2016 6:48:42 PM

There are several ideas about defeating the trap, but Lanliss is clear that a corporal body larger than Small will set off the traps...and that the trap sensors are magical.

The everburning torch is tossed down the corridor, revealing similar faces carved in the walls for at least forty feet and around the bend. There's no telling how dangerous each trap will be, but guaranteed running the gauntlet is gonna be dangerous.

Velarin studies the corridor with a detect Magic spell and it reveals that there are not one but four spell triggers! One sensor each for the darts, spikes, acid, and gas. On a good note, each of the four spell triggers is an abjuration at only a moderate strength. (See Detect Magic for what that means)

Trap Solution! (SteveK)
Saturday November 5th, 2016 9:56:58 AM

Emrys has a fickle Ley Line slip from his magical figures, then calls for the demons head!

Edson and Baslim decides discretion is the better part of valor and move the 500 feet back up the corridor back to the afternoon sun and can hear the sick 'thinks' as a body is hacked to carrying pieces.

Brom and Barratore do the heavy work, chopping with demonic ichor spraying the pair until there is a medium-sized chunk that Barratore can adult maneuver.

Neither barbarian nor fighter is in a mood to be careful about their work. Barratore hauls the still-dripping chunk along the walls, the smell smeared on the corridor behind and drifting before them. Evaris is ready for healing, Velarin with a Wall of Force 'just in case', and Lanliss and Emrys await what will happen. Barratore fills the passage and his hero friends have to plaster themselves to the walls as The Minotaur squeezes by and slathers everyone with the smelly ichor. With no preamble, Barratore stops a step before the heads and flings the torso down the corridor!

Darts! Spikes! Acid! Gas! The corridor erupts and Velarin has to use his prepared Wall of Force to stop the gas from striking the heroes. By the time the wall dissipates, so has the gas, and the spikes begin to slowly contract...

Lanliss' expertise in traps tells the rogue that the traps are resetting and it will take a couple of minutes...

But Edson, Brom, and Baslim are outside!

Trap Solution! (SteveK)
Monday November 7th, 2016 9:33:39 PM

Lanliss braves the dark, passing up The everburning torch and takes it with him around the curve. There, forty feet past the curve, the rogue finds the faces end and he can easily see the mechanism to turn off the traps! He has done it!

The others now have plenty of time to regather and get back together after the carved faces on the corridor walls.

(Lanliss gets a hero point for going alone and disarming the trap!)

The corridor is still only ten feet wide and curves counterclockwise downwards. It appears, (after the heroes get back together) that they still have some traveling to go...

Lanliss and Edson move back as Brom and Barratore take the lead. Lanliss has Velarin's Everburning Torch, Velarin passes Baslim's pebble back to Baslim and casts a Light cantrip on a coin so it can be tossed into the cavern.

Evaris keeps an eye on the corridor behind as the rest of the team awaits what is found.

As the light permeates the cavern, light begins to reflect from other sources, and soon the entire cavern is afire with a million sparkles from quartz shards embedded in the walls and ceiling. And it makes it easy to see what is in the cavern.

The back third of the cavern there is a visible Ley Line of Woldsblood, so strong it can be seen by the normal eye, not just Emrys! Between the Ley Line and the entrance where the heroes are is a Copper Dragon, and it looks sick; being less vibrant copper than a chalky green.

As the heroes arrive, the dragon tries to rouse itself, standing and mantling his wings. The Ley Line glows a healthy green and gold for a moment or two, and then a sickly puce and black snaps out to strike the dragon and it falls back.

“Ah, are you here to kill me? Turn me into a draco-lich? And here I had such delusions of grandeur!” Even its grumble sounds tired.

Saturday November 12th, 2016 8:07:33 AM

Emrys speaks eloquently of the admiration and concern of the heroes, seeking more information to the scenario the Keepers have found themselves in.

Evaris, arriving last, sees the Bardic Witch has things well in hand diplomatically-wise, and just keeps his eleven eyes open.

Balim doesn't need words to know there is a Good creature in need of healing and so moves to find out exactly what's wrong in his best bedside manner. "What? Don't! " begins the Copper dragon feebly, but it is too late. As the Shepherd approaches, the Ley Line pulses a sick greenish black and, tears rolling down its scaly eyes, the dragon stretches out to bite Baslim! (AOO AC 23. Baslim takes 16 damage). The sudden attack stops Baslim from approaching further and he isn't able to examine the dragon.

Brom is excited and then disappointed that there won't be a fight, but maybe his prospects are looking up again...

Edson keeps his guard up, careful that this may be a ruse.

Barratore tells the others it is a dragon, and slides along the outside of the cavern to look at the sparkly glowing river suspended in the air as well as the dragon.

Lanliss looks at the cavern to get a clue for the sick dragon. Besides the heroes, the dragon, the Ley alone that is connected by a cable of sparkly greenish black to the dragon, and a glitter of gold peeking out from under the dragon, why, there is nothing here at all.

Velarin's vast knowledge enables him to confirm several things
1. Ley lines are reputed to be sparkling or glowing red lines visible only in the realm of Shadow. Witches and Fixers use Woldsblood (the stuff that makes up Ley Lines and is reported to be life energy in the Wold) to power their spells.
2. Woldsblood supposedly carries the souls of the newly dead deeper into the afterlife. When brought into the Wold, the substance remains a very dangerous thing, one that poses special dangers to the careless.
3. He recalls a couple of obscure writings where evil groups like the Sons of Dread from this area and Gaalian Reavers from the Sargrass in the Southern Continent corrupted Ley Lines for their own purposes...

......

As soon as Baslim retreats, the dragon drops back down, apparently exhausted. The Ley Line stays where it is, a thread attached to the dragon, and pulsing in ugly colors like the beating of a great heart.

The Copper Dragon opens its eyes and looks with pity at the heroes. "Keepers of the Vale? Cinnamon Vale to the south? Yes, good people live there, which is why I, in my hubris, came here to help."

The Copper Dragon wearily shakes his head. "Call me Patina” he says in a self-depreciating tone. "I tried to heal this Ley Line, but was not strong enough. I am now stuck, siphoned by the Line and controlled by the corrupted magic that has a life of its own.

"The only way to free me is to sever the bond between me and the Line, and that can only come with my death or distance. And the Line won’t let me leave, in fact will force me to fight you if you try. Alas!"

Baslim recoils as the dragon bites down on his arm, sucking in air between his teeth at the pain. His face relaxes, however, as he listens to the dragon explain its predicament. Then concerned. He glances at the blood on his arm and intones a quick prayer, healing the wounds. "You could have warned me, Patina. That smarts. But, I suppose it isn't your fault."

He regards the dragon and strokes his beard in thought. "You know," he surmised out loud, "that sounds an awful lot like an energy drain. I have a death ward spell prepared, which should provide Patina with immunity. But, I see two problems. First, I would need to make contact with him. Dragons can see through an invisibility spell, so no luck there. I can invoke a sanctuary, but his willpower is such that it probably would not work. If someone cast a spell of confusion first, it might work, but he might shrug off even that." He scratched at his cheek and rubbed his quarterstaff with his thumb as he spoke. "Or we could distract him with combat, but that is taking a grave risk with his life and ours. Regardless, if I could reach him, and if I could successful ward him, the leyline might attach to one of us out of necessity. I can prepare deathwards for everyone, but I would need a night of rest."

He rests two fingers on his lower lip and taps them as he thinks. "Or perhaps a magic circle against evil? A wall of iron? If we have some way of weakening his willpower, I could cast greater command and force him to flee the cavern. What do you all think?"

I think you are right Baslim, that those may not effect him. Not only that, but it seems possible that with the connection he has to the Ley line, it may not only be able to siphon him, but may be able to reverse the drain and boost his abilities when it needs to.

The ley line is acting as a siphon, but it also controls his actions, which means it now has some much deeper connection with him, or is a magical effect. If it's a magical effect, than it should be able to be dispelled. We could give that a try first, and at the same time, Baslim can try his command. If neither of those work, Let us go with Barratore's plan of helping Patina to unconsciousness, and dragging him out of here.

I can cast a detect magic first to see if i can get a better idea of what magical effects are occurring between Patina and the Ley line, and the power involved in those effects. Any further thoughts or ideas? If we end up going with Barratore's route, Baslim could try some of the spells he mentioned while it is otherwise occupied with Brom and Barratore.

Patina doesn't know. "I am a healer and I linked myself with the Ley Line to heal it, but it was too strong and took control of me. If you drive me to unconsciousness it may break the link but may not. I am prepared to die to heal the rift and pay for my folly. "

The Ley Line pulses slowly, With no overt moves.

Evaris winces a little. "I was rather hoping we could render you unconscious by magical means, but perhaps that's optimistic," he says. "Certainly a mere Sleep spell would be ineffective."

He turns to his companions. "Shall we try to knock him out? With Shepherd Baslim and I both on hand to heal whoever needs it?"

Emrys looks over the dragon a little more closely. He wonders if the Woldsblood is in direct contact with the dragon. Then a daring idea comes to his mind.

"Woldsblood bonds with the soul ... that's how the souls of the dead are carried away to the Lands of Rest. Perhaps I could trade places with Patina's soul. We could sever the connection between the Leyline and her soul if I place her soul within my Magic Jar. My soul would then enter her body, take control and attempt to move away from the leyline before I succumb to the leyline's power. I am quite familiar to its touch after all. It's risky, but I think my Magic Jar spell might work."

It does sound risky Emrys, but you are more familiar with Ley lines than I. If you think it will work, seems like it's worth giving it a shot.

Still seems easier to let Brom and Barratore knock him out, which doesn't put your soul at risk. Also, your spell may not be effective against the will power of the dragon. If you want to give your way a try before letting the other two take care of things, it's your call.

The others would try whatever it was they were going to try, and hopefully it would work. They seemed to think the dragon was not evil and that was good enough for him. A part of him though, a significant part, hoped they were not successful. That way, he and Brom would truly get to test their mettle. This was no giant, or vampire, but a dragon. Emrys tells everyone what is going to happen to him and for them to attend to his lifeless body after his soul leaves the Magic Jar. After everyone is informed, he will sit upon the ground, pulls his crystal medallion out from underneath his shirt and begins to cast. On his second attempt, his body goes lifeless as his soul goes into the jar. He then senses the powerful draconian life force and attempts to exchange souls.

Baslim thinks a Magic Circle v Evil will help, but he already cast his in the fight against the demon and Emrys does not get that benefit. Baslim is,however, able to put a Death Ward spell on Emrys' body....

Edson, Velarin, and Lanliss all wait and watch.

Emrys is lucky he can cast two fifth level spells as the first one fizzles. The second successfully moves his soul into its prepared receptacle and 'Emrys' can see the strong emanation that is Patina, stronger than any one of the heroes; and attacks!
....

And is repulsed by the still strong will of Patina!

The dragon flinches and the Ley Line pulses in a backlash of energy! "Oh no", Patina groans, "it's taking me over again!"

That is all the warning that the heroes get as the dragon rears up once more and breathes a cone of gas that affects Brom, Lanliss, Velarin, Evaris, and Baslim! (Save Fort DC22 or be slowed for 6 rounds)

However, if it wasn't Patina but the leyline actually controlling her, maybe he can force another attempt at taking control before returning to his body ... the laws of leyline magiks are quite twisted at the moment. Hopefully the rules can be broken a little.

Velarin doesn't like the way this battle is shaking out as the dragon roars, and the wizard momentarily wishes to rethink the course of action taken. Instead, he shakes off his moment of terror(will save 30), and finds himself having another, as he watches Barratore stop moving, after being struck by the ley line. Unfortunately, in his slowed condition he is unable to do anything beyond casting a spell and hoping this ends well.

Not wishing to take chances on the dragon ignoring his spells, he sticks with the tried and true magic missile one last time (for 28 points of damage), and hopes that between Brom and some more damage from his spells, they can drop this dragon before the ley line claims any of us.

ladies and gents, it may become necessary shortly to pull barratore out, and perhaps make this a ranged affair. we cant afford to let the ley line take one or more of us, or we have to fight it and ourselves at the same time.

Evaris is scared but is able to cast a Remove Fear to assist Brom, Barratore, and Edson.

Brom is disappointed the dragon isn't bigger, tougher, more fierce. But the barbarian can't get through the scales of the creature...

Lanliss moves back into the fight and then begins sneaking to look for an opening. He will be able to attempt his move next round. (OOC: Is Lanliss trying to sneak up to the dragon or to flank. Flanking requires getting close to the sick Ley Line and Lanliss can see what that is doing to Barratore...)

Baslim continues to seek the quick one-and-done solution to save the day. This time, it involves some personal danger and the dragon turns to snap at the Shepherd as he charges. (Baslim is bitten for 20 damage). And the healer is unable to touch the dragon.

Barratore is momentarily paralyzed by the Ley Line, and though the Minotaur is not quite as wise as a gerbil, he has a passing thought that this would be the reason the dragon was caught in the first place...

Velarin casts his last Magic Missle spell and calls out instructions in case The wobbling Barratore falls.
.....

The dragon is obviously hurt, but not nearly ready to drop.

"No!", moans Patina, stay away from the Ley Line! Keep hitting me. Please!" The dragon doesn't make it easy, for he continues to attack, turning and ignoring the paralyzed Barratore.

Brom gets the teeth and claws this time and Baslim is the recipient of the wings and tail!

Brom gets two claws for 21 damage.

Baslim gets both wings and the tail for 32 damage.

The Ley Line is not idle, and a pseudopod lashes out against Barratore and Brom since they are still in flanking position of the dragon so they are within 20 feet of the Ley Line. (Will DC or paralyzed one round and lose d8 Wisdom)

Brom seems to feel he is finally starting to have a fight worthy of the name! He calls for more wounds but fails to return them in kind. He does, however, move out of range of the sick-pulsing Ley Line.

Barratore feels the whip of Woldsblood and it saps the rest of his will. The great Minotaur falls, and now there is a tendril of Woldsblood attached through the stone wall just like the one on Patina. Barratorre is unconscious and his mind drifts on corrupted currents into nightmare.

Emrys is having nearly as bad a day as Barratorre, nothing seems to be going right!

Evaris seeks to cast Freedom of Movement on Barratore, but the elf reconsiders. First, the Minotaur is unconscious and the elf is certain the spell will be useless. The second is Evaris will have to touch Barratore and so be within range of the Ley Line...

Edson is the one able to draw more blood from Patina this time!

Lanliss sneaks in but fails to get through the tough hide of the dragon! At least he is lucky enough that the usually perceptive beast doesn't notice his approach. (Perception natural 1!)

Baslim succeeds in drawing any enchantment away from Patina, but the dragon is not under any such magic; it's as if the Ley Line doesn't adhere to the normal laws of magic!

Velarin is running out of spells, but a fireball behind the dragon should do some more damage!

Patina roars and looks towards Edson, who struck him true with his arrow. "Couple more of those, right here!", he encourages the bowman.

Baslim, pretty centralized in the cavern, heals everyone but the dragon, including Baratorre. The healing, however, doesn't bring back The Minotaur to consciousness. That is going to take time for the ability loss to heal...

Evaris casts his Searing Light and... its not a good target.

Velarin casts a lightning bolt and strikes Patina right between his eyes! (Nat 1!)

Edson misses, Lanliss sneaks, and Emrys hesitates while Barratorre is attached to the Ley Line and nightmares run through his head.

(Addendum) Lanliss looks about for any clue and notices something strange about the Ley Line tendrils. On Patina, it is physically attached to the dragon, and pulses strongly every time he does something he would not want to do (like attack the Good heroes). The Ley Line tendril on Barratorre, however, is not pulsing and not quite attached, as if it needs the Minotaur awake and aware to feed and use the hero!

Baslim has no worries, immediately going to the dragon and drawing some of Patina's wounds into himself. All non-lethal hurts as well as the scorched marks and burnt ozone smell come over Baslim before they disappear.

Patina blinks his huge eyes and cranes his neck around to ensure the Lay Line is gone. "I'm free!", he says happily and tucks his tail between his legs and scuttles to the far side of the cavern. " move your Minotaur friend, quickly. I think the Lay Line is back to normal, but I thought I could heal it too and see how right I was."
