Don't Lose Your Head

DM Rob - "How not reassuring...and tantalizingly uninformative."
Wednesday October 26th, 2016 6:19:49 AM

Mack decides that the door does not look trapped in any way. He makes sure Atlas is within arms-reach just in case.

Leskni doesn't detect any magic on the door (or in the passage).

The rest of the party make preparations should something jump them from behind. Or the front. Or anywhere else.

Mack pushes hard against the door and it swings open, releasing a terrible smell into the passageway. Assuming some light is provided into the room...

The cramped chamber ahead stinks of something worse than rotten eggs. A black mildew covers the walls, the door that lies ahead, and everything in between. There are torches in sconces along the walls, but the torches have not been lit. Noone has been here for some time.

The chamber houses some 20 chest high white marble pedestals evenly spaced throughout the room. The pedestals look to have resisted the mildew somehow.

On top of each pedestal is a sculpture of a head. Some of the heads are made of stone, some from wax, but all frozen in time showing a range of emotions: Fear, anger, happiness, and so on. They are of a range of humanoid races, and both genders are represented. No taurish heads can be seen however.

At the other end of the room lies a solid stone door, much like the one first found by the party, although it lacks any 'face'.

'Osul looks into the room from.. well... afar. Something about the arrangement of the pedestals seems familiar, but he cannot put his finger on it, and he says as much - hoping it might register with someone else.

OOC: I was initially concerned when the DM said a terrible "spell" was released into the passageway, but it looks like it was just a terrible "smell". ;)

IC:

I'm thinking someone is going to want to Detect Magic or such, but once we decide to move in, I move to the left checking the north/top side of the room wall first, working my way towards the door slowly. I'll check that top row of pedestals up there, too (if I get that far). I especially check to see if any of the heads are actually sculpted out of butter. (I refresh my TTT before moving in.)

In order to be a little different, Leskni will cast detect poison on the statuette at AF8.

Also, is it at all obvious where the smell is coming from? I'm not sure if I should remind you that Leskni has scent :-)

Looking at the room, Carver realizes he's going to be at a serious disadvantage.
"Atlas, this fight is all you, if I go in there I'll be playing contortionist to not touch any of them pedestals. Heck, just getting across the room without fighting will be bad enough."
Carver stays ready, but plans on not moving into the room unless it gets desperate.....

Armand moves up to the door and slides the torch as hard as he can forward in the room. (along row 7) "That should help light things up." (he will then move to 6Y, he still has light cast on the blade of the glaive.).

"Can anyone see in magical auras in the room itself? The last time I spent way too much time trying to do that and I really can't determine what I'm seeing sometimes, so I don't want to repeat that mistake. And let's try to not say that 's' word again."

DM Rob - "Slippy?.... Slappy?.... Samsonite!!!"
Thursday October 27th, 2016 5:47:42 AM

The round in which the DM learns the difference between 'spell' and 'smell :)

Osul wonders whether the pedestals have been placed in some intentional pattern.

Leskni checks one of the heads for poison, and finds none.

Carver doesn't have any intention of moving into the room unless he absolutely has to. This room obviously wasn't designed with taurs in mind.

Armand moves up and slides a torch into the room to allow others to see. He also cautions the group to avoid the 'S' word.

Owen waits in the entrance with a Ray of Frost readied to fire.

Beordir waits patiently for Mack to give the go-ahead.

Mack edges into the room, checking for traps as he does so. Now in the room and much closer to the pedestals, he can see things a little clear. There aren't any heads sculpted from butter, but Lem’s Left Lung! Interspersed amongst the stone and wax heads are actual severed heads! They are remarkably well preserved.

I closely examine the pedestal at AB4, and if all clear, slowly advance to AA4, AB3, AC3, then closely examine the Head at AD4. "Mack, here I come. Don't stab me thinking that I'm a ghost come to get you."

As Atlas proceeds he wonders if this mold is something common in dungeons that he's heard others talk about or even seen himself before. It seems to ring a bell...

Mack examines the head at AB4. It looks like a head of a male elf, carved in stone. The face is twisted in agony.

Osul and Atlas both consider the mildew. It looks completely natural. Granted it certainly doesn’t look (or smell!) pleasant, but touching it would probably be unwise. It may not be poisonous or disease ridden, but really, do you want mold that has been cultivating for decades all over your skin?

Atlas moves into the room and follows closely behind Mack.

Medium sized Leskni offers to shrink Carver down to size (OOC: If you have a spell in effect, please list it in the bottom of your post along with the duration. It just helps me keep track of things)

Armand and Owen wonder how the heads could be so well preserved. Their knowledge of religion doesn't help much, but perhaps their knowledge of the magical might help?

Mack then leans in to examine the severed head on the pedestal in front of him. It's definitely human and incredibly well preserved. It may have been cut from its body only moments ago.

As Mack looks at the head, its eyes focus on him! It's jaw opens and "RAARRGGHHHHH!"

All of the heads in the room start to come to life! The stone and wax heads all turn to face Mack and Atlas. They all start screaming, laughing, cackling and taunting the pair.

"Ooooh, he's shaking!"
"Is that a puddle he's standing in?"
"And I thought WE smelt bad!"
"What do you know. I'm not the ugliest one in here anymore!"
"Kill them! Kill them! Kill them! Kill them!"

The noise they create is very loud and disorienting (*See Note below!).

The severed heads though... rise in the air!?! Floating above their pedestals, they all start to converge on Mack and Atlas!

Flying Severed Head 1 - the head Mack had been closely observing - bites at him and then even tries to headbutt him! The bite is successful, the head even grasping on to Mack's arm! (Hit AC24. Miss AC12. Grab CMB 20 hits 16. Mack takes 8pts damage and must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot! Mack has the grappled condition!)

Flying Severed Head 2 flies towards the pair and attacks Atlas! It bites at him, but fails to latch on (Hit AC21. Grab CMB 20 missees 22? Atlas takes 5pts damage and must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

4 other Flying Severed Heads move towards the pair, boxing them in to the corner.

Owen's Ray of Frost fails to trigger (OOC: Your spell only has a range of 40ft, and from your position you can't hit any targets)

Owen calls out a warning a lobs a fireball into the room. He can hear the sizzle of the flying heads. Perhaps more impressive is the effect it has on the wax heads. The effect is such that it simultaneously melts the outer layers and then ignites their vapors. There are now flaming, disfigured, animated, talking wax heads in the room!

"I'm melting, melting! What a world, what a world"
"I always knew I was hot!"
"My face might be melting but I'm still better looking than that halfling"
"Come over here and cast that! I'll bite your nose off!"

Squeaver runs into the room and both it and Mack lay into the head attached to his arm.

Armand follows suit and uses his glaive to attack the head attached to Mack. His blow is precise. Perhaps too precise? The head explodes, with fragments of skull, flaps of skin, and an eruption of blood. (Squeaver must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

Beordir then moves into the room as well, fearing for Mack's safety. Fortunately that particular zombie head is no more.

Osul steps forward and begins casting a summoning spell. The noise is most certainly coming from all the animated heads in the room. Osul doesn't feel like he under the effects of a spell or enchantment. It's just the noise is so loud and distracting.

Atlas uses sword and shield to bash the zombie head before him. It looks quite weakened from the fireball, and Atlas manages to finish it off quite easily. Much like the other head, this one also explodes. (Atlas must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

Medium-sized Carver strides into the room, but the flying zombie head is too hard a target for him to hit this time around.

Leskni fires a shot at S5, and even though it has partial cover, she still manages to strike her target.

The flying diseased zombie heads act...

S2 lashes out at Mack! It headbutts him and sinks it's teeth into him, latching on to his neck! (Hit AC14. Miss AC11. Hit AC25. CMB hit 19. Mack takes 13pts damage. Mack has the grappled condition!)

S3 steps closer and also attacks Mack. (Hit AC17. Hit AC18. Hit AC13 - as Mack is already grappled. Mack takes 19pts damage)

S5 steps closer and attacks Atlas! With a headbutt and bite, it attaches to his calf (Hit AC22. Hit AC26 - crit not confirmed on AC10. Miss AC16. CMB hit 24. Atlas takes 11pts damage. Atlas has the grappled condition! If he doesn't already have it, Atlas must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

S6 steps closer and also attacks Atlas! (Miss AC12. Hit AC21. Miss AC11. Atlas takes 7pts damage. If he doesn't already have it, Atlas must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

The melting wax heads and unaffected stone heads continue their laughing, crying, screaming and taunting.

I take a quick look around, as apparently there's an UGLY halfling in here somewhere! Hmm... I don't see him anywhere. :P

"I can't believe we're fighting heads..... and LOSING!" I say as I practically fall over after being pummeled by 2 more heads, and one of them is now trying to give me hickies.

Squeaver moves from AE5 to AE4, to flank/attack S3 with Mack.

It looks like I can still do a flurry, so I lay into S2 (the one grappling me):

Atlas closes his mouth and eyes in time to avoid the splatter, but he cannot avoid the teeth and the effects they have.

Now it is his turn. He first slashes at the head biting at his calf. His swing is true! With that one dispatched and his actions free again, he bashes the another one next to him with is shield. However, the head dodges the spikes. Fortunately it was enough of a distraction, as Atlas brings the shield down he brings his sword out and pierces the head with a deadly blow.

"We're not losing any more! However, I do think this is going to leave a mark."

That was close. Beordir worries as he feels the heat of the fireball that went off to his right. Not enthused at being bitten by one of these things, Beordir shifts again into a defensive stance. With the loss of some of the flying heads, there’s space to his left, so he shifts over.

Looking at the one attached to Atlas’ arm, he decides to focus on it, hoping the sooner it gets removed, the better things will be for his companion. When the attack comes, he puts a bit more strength into it, hoping to really disable his target completely.

OOC: My sincere apologies for there not being a DM post yesterday. We're in the middle of a handover

Osul summons 3 small air elementals into the room. They each move and attack, yet as they move away they provoke attacks from 2 of the flying heads! (Hit AC19. Miss CMB14. Air Elemental 1 takes 8pts damage)

Osul edges closer to the battle.

Squeaver moves to flank with Mack, but unfortunately doesn't move far enough (OOC: AE4 doesn't flank with AC3. Fortunately it doesn't affect your attacks this round). Squeaver manages to bite one of the heads

Mack does his best to finish off the head biting him, but it's just not enough.

Atlas shows how it is supposed to be done, killing off S5 with ease (OOC: As you were grappled at the start of the round you can't take any action that requires two hands - such as a full attack with two separate weapons). The head explodes with a cloud of red, bloody mist.

Beordir steps closer, and stabs at the head grappling Mack. His rapier pierces it, however, the head explosion covers him in dark red blood. (Beordir must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

Carver grows frustrated with his lance. It just won't hit it's target.

Leskni moves into the room, but despite being closer, her aim is a little off.

Owen moves up a sends a magic missile at S3. The head bursts, showering Squeaver (Squeaver must make a Fort Save vs DC12 or contract Zombie Rot!)

Armand channels some energy to heal those in the room. Those outside the room do not get to feel the holy goodness (OOC: Channeling releases a 'burst' and bursts: "can't affect creatures with total cover from its point of origin")

Only 1 flying head remains...

Flying Zombie Head 6 tries to bite Atlas, but to no avail (Miss AC17). He's just too slippery with all that blood on him.

The wax heads continue burning down. It should only take a few more seconds until they melt completely. The stone heads continue thier vebal assault

"Blood blood everywhere!"
"Not much of it belong to them though, eh?"
"I can't believe the halfling is still alive. Thought he'd be a quarterling by now"

Atlas, free from the head that bit into his calf, decides to put the last head out of its misery. "We'll save the questions for the heads made of stone." With a single swing of his sword he manages to finish the creature off.

"Now that these things are out of the way, do we have any questions that we want to ask the remaining heads? It's kind of hard for me to think with all the noise, and who knows if they'll answer, but it is worth a try."

"Also, it is not that far if we need to go back for healing. I'm a bit cut up, and something with that bite is bugging me."

(d20+4 fortitude save of 14 vs DC 12 - SAVED!)

With Atlas killing the last "attacking" head, I check on Squeaver, and then sit down and rest for a minute, not feeling so well. If I can tell that Atlas has Zombie Rot, I do this attempt on him. If I can't tell that, I do it on myself, to see if that helps at all with whatever these creatures may have inflicted me with:

OOC: It looks like my Heal Skill would help against Disease, but not sure how it will help. Appears to help at time of a save, although that was during combat. So not sure if it grants an additional save, or not. If not, I'd be surprised how it would EVER help, unless you tried to do it during actual combat.

Atlas deftly finishes off the last of the flying heads. As it explodes, all the other stone (and dripping wax) heads in the room fall silent and still. Their faces twisted in whatever position there were in when the last head burst.

Carver is free to bash the remaining stone heads if he chooses.

Leskni tries to address the stone heads, but now that they have been refrozen, they do not answer her.

The party regroup and treat the wounded in the dying light of the flaming wax heads. It's almost romantic.

Owen has a bit of a look around, but doesn't notice that much. Perhaps overwhelmed by the blood dripping from those who were close to the heads when they exploded.

OOC: There seems to be some confusion on how diseases work, so I'll try and help a bit:

- As soon as fail the save, you are diseased and you know it. However, diseases have an onset period. You won't suffer any ill effects until then.
- The onset period is rolled privately. In this case you don't know whether you will come down with the effects in 1 day or 4 days. Who knows? You might be out of this place with time to spare before needing a cleric.
- Each day you get to make a new save against the disease. At that time, others might be able to help you (eg: with a heal check)

Like Mack said, it feels like something inside me is a bit off. However, I'm good to go for now. I will take you up on your offer in the morning though!"

Atlas heads over to the stone door at the opposite end of the room. After Mack verifies that there are no traps, he gives it a push to see if it will move at all. "No sense in dallying, should we proceed?"

Even after the attempts to clean himself, Atlas is quite the picture of horror. Blood is still smeared on his face, bits of hair and skin can still be found on his armor where he missed it, and he doesn't have his usual smile right at the moment. "God I stink."

If there are one's with the mouth open are there teeth and tongue inside or just a holly opening? Would these sculptures constitute artifacts that the Drow were looking for? Are there names on the pedestals?)

Dm shane: the heads are very well sculpted. Almost lifelike, but the sculpting is only on the surface. The ones with open mouths have only smooth stone behind their teeth. There are no markings to name them, and the portray no one with whom you are familiar...perhaps the Drow may find them of interest.

Mack: Mack tries the white lenses on and everything in the room stands out in sharp detail, the black ones give no percieved benefit. Squeaver cannot wear them fully, his eyes on the sides of his head and the leather nose piece isn't long enough to let each lense cover each eye.

Carver:...still looking for tounges.

Atlas: takes up positon by the door, ready for whatever comes next.

Leskni: the white lenses are "eyes of the eagle" not qute sure of the dark ones.

Armand: prepares to throw a torch through the opening.

Owen: Eyes of the eagle and goggles of night...pretty basic actually. the eyes of the eagle are while, while normal ones are clear...interesting appearance when they are put on.

‘Osul: gets ready to thow a enchanted tounge through the door. The surrealness of the situation completely lost upon him.

Boerdir stands pat his rapier at the ready.

with a creak of long unused hinges the door opens inward, stale air wafts ouf with an odd smell to it, you cannot quite place it...the torch and the tongue fly through Illumiating a long hall, at least 40' long, with the barest outlines of a door at the end. there is something hanging from the ceiling, terminating about 5 ft from the floor, but due to where the light lays, you cannot make out much about it, perhaps a rope of somesort? the lit parts of the room have black on the gray stone and an inordinate amout of dust has collected in the corners. thats all you can see from the outside.

between the dancing lights spell, Macks keen eyes and the entering of the hall you discover that the thing hanging from the ceiling is a rope with a knot in the end of it. it disappears into the ceiling so tightly that it looks to be growing from it. the black marks on the walls look to be scorch marks, while the dust in the corners is ash. the door at the end is stone.

Mack: not traps but the head gets coated in a gooy layer of ash from the roll.

Carver: concentrates on the dancing lights and soon finds he is alone in the zombie head room.

Atlas: covers Mack in his exploration of the room.

Leskni: you are certain that your words opened the door.

I'm no expert on this stuff, but my guess is that the rope possibly opens the door, and also sends a wave of fire thru the room at the same time. Which one of you is fire proof? Then again, the rope itself seems to survive the fire. Maybe just the ground lights up?"

Mack: is no fool and guesses the purpose of the room...no firey death for me thanks!

Carver: wisely abstains from entering the room, too many tragedies have this trope in them...

Atlas: as far as you can see, there are no vents, or holes to let any kind of flame in. the door is a featureless slab of stone set into the wall to open outward, feels solid or at least a lot more solid than your shoulder. Everything sounds solid, really solid, solid rock.

Leskni: the soot and ash is swept into a neat little pile in the middle fo the room, a little to the right of the rope. the rope looks to be a rope of some sort!

Armand: calls for a calm rational consideration of what to do and following his own advice he casts Detect Magic on the door and finds: nothing, the door is completely mundane, no magic whatsoever

Owen: high tails it back to the zombie head room.

‘Osul: regretfuly informs everyone that he has no spells that would save them all from a firestorm.

Boerdir relaxes his guard and studies the rope. it looks like mundane rope, well fit to the block above it, but not magical.

the room is now clean as a whistle. no writing or glyps become visable. carvers dancing lights spell lights up the whole room over time. it is nothing more or less than a 40ft hall with a rope hanging in the middle of it.

Carver: checks the rope out. Looks to be a hemp rope, 2" diameter 4 strand S laid, sailmakers whipping on the end with waxed sailmakers twine. the rope disappears into a block in the ceiling so tightly you cannot see a gap. the rope is not new, but neither has it suffered from age.

Atlas: after Carvers inspection you join the ropes with a double fishermans bend. it will serve in this application. if you were to be holding a great deal of weight with the rope and wanted to get the knot out you would, of course, us a Carrack bend.

Leskni:

Armand: voices his worries and questions if anybody looked for secret doors. Unaware that Mack has completed a VERY thorough examination of the hall.

Owen: suggests a 10ft pole, but there is never one around when you need one, luckily, Mack has an idea.

‘Osul: grabs onto Atlas's rope ready to pull once the high sign is given.

when everyone is ready the rope is pulled....absolutely nothing happens...the rope does not even move perceptably. no flames shoot out...nothing.

There seems to be some confusion as to what carvers idea is. Some folks crowd into the hallway, while others stay in the pedestal room. Once things get sorted out, and Carver is In the room alone you find that the door to the hallway will not close due to the way the flagstoned rose up slightly when the door was opened. Further inspection reveals that the floor shifts very slightly, but shifts back as more weight goes into the hallway. This was activated when a pin dropped as the door to the hallway was opened.

"I don't think that will work, any weight out of the hallway will most likely prevent the door from closing entirely. If you want me to check it out alone, you all will most likely need to back up out of the pedestal room as well. We've not really had much luck with splitting up, so maybe we should all just enter the hallway and suffer the consequences. That's my new suggestion at least."

Carver does a calculation on when the delay poison is set to expire, so he will know when to quaff the potion or elixir or what whatever it was called he was to drink.....

Armand (Robert D) AC 16/touch11/flat15 HP 50/50 CMD 17 Character Sheet
Tuesday November 22nd, 2016 5:23:26 PM

Okay I'm confused. Which way is the hallway pivoting, upward to the door we want to go through or upward toward the door we came through? Wouldn't our character's have noticed the floor's seesaw effect as we initially walked down the hallway?

If it's a matter of balancing then we can gather in the middle of the hallway (or Mack can stay up the rope), then Carver can move around sighting on the flagstones and call out adjustments to our positions, and open/close the doors since his horseshoes suspend him above the ground I assume he would not have any pressure on the floor.

If our weight is not enough to shift the seesaw hallway down so the door will open then I say it's time to take out the pick and chisel.

Carver, it's not a magical potion it's a vial of anti-toxin.

Somewhat desperate, he looks around the room he is in and asks, "Could we put in a bunch of columns and achieve the same effect?"

All enter the hall but one, thinking frantically for a way to cheat the odds. The others call to him to tempt fate, but does he? Mack gets off the rope and douses himself with water, it's an odd feeling, detached, insulated, fear merely an echo in the back of your mind, but dread fills the mouth with bitter dregs.
