This room is filled with all sorts of dusty furniture, shelves and tables. On the west wall hangs an ornate gold mirror. To the North and South are two large (and solid) stone doors. Neither door will so much as budge. Large tapestries hang on the walls, dusty but in good condition. They show old drow scenes. Times of toil beneath the surface, kneeling for a matriarch of some sort and battles against dwarves.
Everything in the room is reflected perfectly by the mirror with the exception of the party. The reflections are waving frantically trying to get the parties attention. There seems to be some items of value tucked away in random nooks.

Atlas walks up to the mirror and tries decipher what he and the rest of the group are trying to tell them. In doing so he also touches the mirror surface to see if it is solid. "Can you talk to us or do we have to play charades? I assume you're trying to warn us about something dangerous that is about to happen to us?"

Looking back over his shoulder Atlas tries to find Mack, "Mack, could you pick up those valuables? Don't want to risk falling in a pit without at least taking some of the treasure with us. Maybe someone can see if there's anything magical included?"

DM Rob filling in...

Beordir and Owen stay in the doorway, not ready to commit to entering just yet. Nothing has been easy so far this day. Why should this room prove any different? Beordir notes at least 20 different magical auras in front of him, the most powerful of which is 'strong'.

Mack pokes about and finds a very well made quiver. It has been made from the blackest of leather. On the underside it looks like someone has been keeping a tally of their kills by scratching into the leather. It currently adds up to 38.

Armand admires the tapestries on the walls. They are in remarkable condition. Barely a stich out of place though and no 'moth holes'. This tapestry in particular looks to show the collapse of the tunnels by the Woldian "heroes". Here they are depicted with horns, destroying the tunnels and killing the helpless drow underneath.

A number of the group are drawn to the mirror and the curious actions that their reflections are undertaking. Atlas, Carver, Osul, Leskni and Pella boldly stand in front of it and try different things.

Carver - with Osul's aid - tries to work out what is being said, but all he can gather from the 'reflections' is that there is some sense of urgency to what they are trying to communicate. The reflected party almost look panicked.

Leskni tries sign language with the 'reflections'. They don't look to understand what is said - even Leskni's own 'reflection'. But it does cause the other Leskni to calm down for a moment, and she makes a spiral in the air with her finger: the universal symbol for 'turn around'.

Atlas tries talking to the reflections, and then reaches out to touch the mirror itself.

As Atlas' fingers graze the surface of the mirror, there is a blinding flash of light (Drow/Surface Drow and any other creatures specifically sensitive to light are Blinded for 1 round. No Save. Everyone else is Dazzled)

DM RobC - The other side of the mirror
Friday December 2nd, 2016 5:34:03 AM

When Atlas' fingers graze the surface of the mirror he is surprised to discover that the mirror does not feel made of glass. It is some sort of magical force rather than a "normal" mirror.

There is a blinding flash and Atlas finds he is now looking out on the party from the other side of the mirror. Touching it has somehow teleported him to the other side! It is an exact copy of the room he was just in. Identical tapestries even hang on the walls.

He can see Leskni on the other side of the 'mirror' trying sign language, and he can see Carver's lips move - though he cannot hear anything.

Standing where Atlas had been is the reflection-Atlas! It looks exactly like him, even down to the equipment and blood stains from the recent battle. It is now standing with the party, and they don't look to have noticed.

Perhaps just as alarmingly is that Atlas now finds himself practically surrounded by the 'reflections'.

Atlas has a moment of panic run through him, but he takes a deep breath and tries to calm himself. He looks at the others in the room with him, waving their hands about and trying to say something, just like he saw when he looked through the mirror at them. How am I going to let them know that my reflection changed spots with me? He ponders that a moment.

"Are any of you real? Are you people trapped in this mirror, or creatures just wanting to get out there and kill them?" He's not sure that they'll respond, but he has to ask. As he does, he stands there with his hands on his hips trying to look completely different than the others, just staring back out at his friends. What can make me stand out from the others so they know something changed? He thinks on this...

The duplicates stop their gesturing at the mirror.

"What makes you think you are the real one?" Duplicate-Leskni asks. It's weird. She looks and sounds EXACTLY like Leskni. There's even a faint linotaur smell to her.

The other duplicates draw weapons.

"Hey, I'm real!" Duplicate-Mack pipes up "See?" With that he pokes himself between the eyes. "Would I be able to do that if I was imaginary?"

"Let's kill it now and be done with it" Duplicate-Carver declares as he backs away from the mirror, lance in hand.

"No, let's wait for another one to come through" Duplicate-Beordir responds.

On the other side of the mirror, Duplicate-Atlas has drawn his sword! He hasn't attacked anyone or anything yet however.

The others look to be readying for combat - casting spells, drawing weapons. They are focusing their attention to the hallway where Duplicate-Atlas pointed. The consequence though is that some have turned their backs to the now armed Duplicate-Atlas!

Hoping that is enough to distract them from his approach to the mirror, Atlas takes a chance and reaches towards the mirror. "Welcome to the land of crazy Carver!" Atlas starts with the easiest target, attacking the fake 'Osul first. Knowing his weaknesses makes this easy, but fighting someone that looks like is friend is hard. He grits his teeth and strikes; sword, shield, sword, all in a fluid and precise manner, drawing blood with every attack.

He glances at the mirror as he finishes to see how bad it is on the other side. "Carver, if they kill us on the other side will we be able to get back? Not that I want us to win over there...quite the dilemma!"

I'm totally confused, even after rereading the last few days posts.

Do we have any idea WHY Osul is down? As far as I can see absolutely nobody has actually hit him. Did he suddenly just drop dead or what? Does he have wounds on him?

If Osul is lying down and has wounds on him Leskni will move to him (avoiding an attack of opportunity from Carver if at all possible) and use her save/slay power on Osul.

If Osul has no wounds on him then that won't work and she will just take the total defense action right now.

"Somebody smash the damn mirror"

The 'Osul in the mirror (the reflection) was attacked by the reflections of Atlas and Carver, the wounds given in the mirror apparently also occurred out here.

So essentially we are in a TPK situation, Atlas and Carver out here will most probably decimate the party, simply because they are the big fighters and Paladin saves are ridiculous. We either die from wounds out here, or we die from wound the reflections receive.

Which is why I think we all have to be on one side or the other of the mirror. Even then it's likely we are not going to survive a trap room, with no visible means of egress, and no time to really look because we are in combat.

I assume the DM is private emailing party members who are in the mirror with regards to what they are doing 'off' screen.

So yes Leskni needs to get 'Osul back up and if need be force his hand to touch the mirror while in his weakened state. We all should probably run to the mirror and slap it at the same time. That includes Owen needing to run the gauntlet back into the room

Mack: jumps off carvers back and touches the mirror, the world goes white once again....for the 4th time.

Carver: sticky webs appear about you but you manage to side step them neatly you hit Beordir for 11 points of damage

Atlas: takes up positon near Carver to keep him from getting flanked.

Leskni: you move to 'Osul's fallen form and lay hands upon him, with a spasm he draws a breath and his skin looses that grey pallor it had. he's still unconscious, but looks stable.

Armand: the doors in the room are closed, just like the doors in the room you are in. is the confusion of this room symptom of the chaos going on, or is it a feature of the room it'self. somethings going on, but can you figure it out before you all bleed out?

Owen: continues to stay at a safe distance.

‘Osul: your mother always said you could be anything, anybody you ever wanted to be, did becoming the person you are lead you to this fate?

Boerdiryour web spell fails to capture Carver, but it does slow him down and reduce the damge you take from his attack. you take 11 points of damage.

the mirror has flashed so many times it's almost like a stobe light. who all has touched the mirror? what's happening? it's hard to tell with everone being dazzled all the time.

You, 'Osul, Carver, and I are all here now, so they're out numbered. It doesn't look good. Do you mind checking the doors while we finish with the rest of the doppelgangers? Sorry for the delay in posting guys. Had a migraine all weekend.

Atlas strikes Duplicate-Beordir once more, though Carver does not share in the success.

Mack appears in the room and is a little concerned about Squeaver. Sure, there's a Squeaver here, but is it the right Squeaver? Judging by the way he/it is preparing to attack.... probably not.

Mack tries touching the mirror again. It is cool to the touch and he can feel the tingle of magical energy. But nothing happens. He remains on "this side" of the mirror. He notices that the duplicates move and act just like the originals. Curious though that they're all engaged in combat rather than casting spells...

Duplicate-Beordir and Duplicate-Mack continue to attack Atlas (Miss AC15. Hit AC29. Miss AC18. Atlas takes 4pts damage)

Duplicate-Leskni and Duplicate-Armand pursue Carver (Leskni provokes an AoO from Carver. Miss AC13. Hit AC27. Carver takes 8pts damage)

Duplicate-Owen pursues Osul to attack (Hit AC23. Osul takes 2pts damage and must make a concentration check of 10 + damage dealt + spell level = DC15 to avoid losing the spell)

Duplicate-Pella and Duplicate-Squeaver change targets and attack Mack (Hit AC16. Miss AC10. Mack takes 1 pt damage)

And what exactly is happening in the mirror?

(OOC)
Mack missed me.

I'm trying to cover the mirror. I don't know if I have enough actions to do it.

Free Action - none
Standard Action - anchor the corner of the tapestry...I hope that's only a standard action. I have arrows in my quiver and a free hand to retrieve one. The map indicates Osul is near R16. That action would probably open me up to an AoO from Osul.
Move Action - Move to R15 while drawing my rapier and lean past Atlas to cover the mirror with the tapestry. That would probably also open me up to an AoO. I'm hoping having the blade in my hand allows me to use Combat Expertise to make my AC 24 for that AoO.

Carver sees it is the Squeaver on the other side of the mirror hiss, and realising that the Squeaver he is with is acting docile, changes his target to Duplicate-Beordir. Carver's attack is enough to slay the clone/duplicate/doppleganger.

Osul's whirlwind subsides into a small elemental.

OOC: I'm not positive, but I believe Duplicate-Owen is the only Duplicate left alive on "the other side"?

IC: If possible, I flank anyone I think might be a remaining enemy (Duplictae-Owen?), and attack.

Squeaver stays off to the side, in a defensive posture against anyone that he doesn't trust coming towards him.

Ouch. His companions were still insane.

Desperate, Beordir drops the end of the tapestry he’s holding and takes a defensive posture. Then he retrieves a small sticky blob from his spell component pouch, right side pocket, stuck to top left corner. Manipulating the small goo, he enchants a few arcane phrases. Unfortunately Atlas sword form worries him overmuch and he does not flatten the gum at just the right instant causing his spell to dissipate in arcane wisps.

His plans changed. The spell failure meant he could not realistically escape from his companions, so he reaches out and touches the mirror hoping it will alter their perception of him before they kill him.

(OOC)
Free Action - retrieve spell components
Standard Action - cast defensively d20+8=11 ; Failed by 8 and lost the spell.
Move Action - touch mirror.

I was planning to acrobat away and my roll was good to do that, but with just one HP, I didn't think I could make it through another round. So I'm abandoning that roll.

Seeing all of his friends attack Beordir makes Owen realize what is going on. If this were a true murder-you-all trap designed to make a group attack one another, there would have been no reason for mind-altered party members to try to stop people from touching the mirror. Further, the fact that the duplicates were ganging up on Beordir rather than fighting indiscriminately reveals that they are duplicates rather than mind-altered. Not only did detect magic indicate that they were not mind-altered; if they were themselves a trap-maker would have just introduced random attacks rather than concerted effort.

The connection made in his mind--and knowing he is the only target left--Owen bolts (invisibly) to touch the mirror, on the side furthest from Beordir. Stealth: 27.

"What the hezmada is going on?"

Armand will examine the corpse of the 'reflection' Owen. Heal 21 (d20+11) Perception 23 (d20+4).
Specifics he is trying to determine...
1-is the reflection humanoid (is/was if a life-form or some type of construct)?
2-what is it equipped with? Does it have exact replication of all of Owen's gear, or is just the face/body and clothing the same?
3-anything else the rolls may reveal that I have not thought of in my brain stupor from having had to enter grades all day.

Will Save vs DC14 to attack Armand/Sanctuary: 17 = Pass

The party all now stand "safely" on the same side of the mirror, although Leskni questions how they can be sure? How do you know who is who? Who can you trust? Noone in the room has attacked anyone else in the past few seconds. That could be a good start.

Armand examines the dead Owen-duplicate. He pokes and prods it for a bit. If its appearance was an illusion or disguise, he would be able to feel through it. This is different. The dead being looks (and for those with scent: even smells) just like the real Owen. Come to think of it, where is Owen? Noone has seen him recently...

Based on his knowledge of the anatomy, the Owen-duplicate shares the same internal organs Armand would expect to see in the real Owen.

As to its equipment, everything visible on the real-Owen is visible on the duplicate. It's pack, pouches and pockets are all empty.

On the other side of the "mirror", the duplicates look to be attacking it - trying to break in to the room you are now in. It should hold them for a while.

OOC: Folks, the Wold slow-down starts from tomorrow - Dec 17th. During this time all Wold games enter a kind of stand still. We don't progress with story-arcs or combats so as to give everyone time to spend in the real world :) You are still free to post here, and we (your DMs) will do the same. Perhaps it is a chance/time to patch wounds? Have a camp fire and tell stories? Reminisce? Up to you.

Atlas jumps back as Mack advances on him, but as some of his pains slip away he realizes Mack is making fun. "Dang it Mack, you had me on that one! Thanks for the healing, I need it. These cuts and bruises are taking their toll. It looks like we're safe her for the time being. Mack, lets look at our options and make sure there's not a monster ready to pounce.

"Wait a minute, where's our Owen?"
Atlas gets a concerned look on his face and looks in the mirror to see if he can see him. When he doesn't he's completely confused. He talks out loud to no one in particular, "Are we sure I killed the duplicate Owen?" Atlas looks white as a ghost as the thought that he might have killed the real Owen crosses his mind.

Owen reappears right behind Atlas and says, "Armand, would you please stop poking about my innards? It's a little disconcerting to watch."

Addressing the group as a whole, he responds to Leskni's questions: "I definitely think we're supposed to end up on this side of the mirror. If we weren't, he duplicates would not have tried to stop us from touching it, and the trap would have been set up differently. Consider: the defenders of a place with this trap could touch the whole thing simultaneously, staying utterly safe, while leaving their apparent forms on the other side ready to fight. If the enemies got past the duplicate defenders, they would likely have to fight duplicates of themselves before they got anywhere--and the real defenders would still be in the clear. It's pretty ingenious."

Armand looks up startled by Owen's remark. "Hey guys, don't go wasting healing spells. I still have this." He holds up the wand of healing.

He looks over the party. Heal 18. "Okay this may take a few minutes. While I'm doing this I suggest Atlas touch nothing in the room. And maybe Mack look things over for traps and such, and maybe Owen see if there is magic afoot."

He goes to Beordir. (oops ignore the d20+3 forgot to change the die). 6 touches of the wand, Beordir should be fully healed.

Armand walks over to Mack. 3 touches fully healed (I'm keeping that d8 that rolled a 1 because Mack only needed 4 hitpoints at that point.)

Armand walks to Atlas. He eyes him for a minute with a raised eyebrow. "Touching things not fully checked out." He shakes his head. 4 touches and his wounds are closed up. Though still bloody.

Leskni is next on his rambles. 2 touches, Leskni is 2 hp shy of full.

Armand says as he walks over to Carver. 2 touches and fully healed. (deducted charges off the treasure list, wand is down to 29 charges)

OOC: Eric I think it's something we have to consider for the future. Usually in our game at home, if players are a point where they are going to bed down or rest, then of course the cleric burns off all spells for healing since he/she will get them back in the morning. But I'm not sure if we were bedding down. For all we've done, I think in game we are still sometime in the morning. It might be near lunch time. Generally we tend to try and save spells for combat situations and use our potions and wands for non-combat situations.
