The party take a moment to heal wounds.
Carver examines the mirror, touching it once more. He can feel the tingle of magic at his fingertips. No matter how hard he pushes though he cannot feel the surface budge, flex or sway. On the other side he can clearly see the duplicates attacking it. He is quite certain they are damaging it, and that it will only be a matter of moments before they break it.
The party notice that Carver can safely touch the mirror's surface on this side without swapping places with his clone.

As to healing, from going through the now dead copy of Owen's pockets and observing its attacks...I'd say these clones mimic us in physical abilities and perhaps non magical equipment, not in spell casting. I'd venture they are not healed. Though in true neither are they much damaged from us.
Armand looks around the room. What sort of furniture is there? Can it be moved around? Perhaps built/shaped into some sort of fort or obstacle for the spell casters and archers? If it can be he will suggest such.
Mack, perhaps while we get ready on this end you can check the doors in this room and other places for traps and such?

The party are in agreement that this room looks to be as good a place as any to make a stand against the clones.
Tactics are discussed, mainly centering on using the mirror as a pinch-point.
For all the activity that the clones are doing to break in, the party notice that no noise can be heard from the other side. The party can't hear what the clones are saying, and it is likely that the clones also can't hear the party.
Each side of the mirror continues planning their next course of action while Carver-Clone and Atlas-Clone continue to try and break their way through. The pane will not hold forever.
Leskni-Clone is pointing to some of the furniture, while Mack-Clone looks to be saying something in response.

DM RobC - "Now is perhaps not the time to work out an elaborate code..." Wednesday January 4th, 2017 5:24:38 AM Carver proposes a way of talking that might help discern friend from foe.
Mack is in agreement with a code or catch phrase. He doesn't find any traps in the immediate area, but is unable to search the entire room at the moment - unless he wants to let his guard down to do a thorough check?
Armand looks to the mirror, but is unable to tell what the clones are talking about. He's fairly certain they aren't talking about a truce or surrender though. They look to be coordinating an attack.
Owen doesn't share in the enthusiasm as the others. This has been one looooong day.
Carver-clone charges the mirror, and for the first time it makes an audible 'thump'. He lines up to charge again.
The other clones move closer to the wall the mirror is against. Only Duplicate-Carver can be clearly seen by all now. Well, and the dead Osul.

Beordir likes the idea of the code phrase since things are about to get rather confusing. He shifts off to the right, anticipating the clones breaking through. With Carver discussing a charge, he positions himself a little back from the mirror to keep from being run over.
"Hey, I was just thinking now that we can't see them all..... when that mirror breaks, they may appear in our room in multiple spots. Maybe that's what they're pointing to. We better put our backs to the wall, or at least back to back. We don't want them suddenly appearing behind us all."
I don't like being in the middle of the room, or near any hallways or doors that we don't know about yet. I move to AF10, and intend to fight back to back with Armand if he's still over there. If I have time BEFORE they appear on this side, I cast Magic Fang on myself (+1 to hit and damage for 1 attack, 10 rounds).

Armand renews the light spell on his glaive, and readies an action to attack anyone that looks threatening and gets within his reach.

Moving through that 15ft gap would provoke an AOO from either Armand-Dup or Squeaver-Dup, and Squeaver-Dup is the weaker. Hit AC21. Carver takes 2pts damage)
Atlas pokes some new holes in Atlas-clone
Beordir helps with a solid attack of his own (Highlight to display spoiler: {In regards to the AOO last round: Attacks of Opportunity occur any time you move out of a threatened space, even if it is to another threatened space})
Squeaver and Mack flank the Beordir-clone. With true heroics, Mack is able to dispatch of the clone! Having already taken a 5ft step, Squeaver is unable to move a safer spot in the room just yet.
Owen backsteps and tries to hit the Leskni-dupe with a spell, but his aim is a little off.
Leskni moves into a position to hit the Carver-clone with a spell. Unfortunately she doesn't have line of sight to him just yet, so she readies her spell instead.
Armand calls for Atlas to move away from the doorway. Despite Atlas being fully healed at the start of the combat, the last few rounds have taken a heavy toll.
Armand's blast is enough to drop the Atlas-clone!
It has been a good round for the party! Two more clones are down.

Duplicate-Armand hits out at Beordir but misses by a longshot! (Miss AC9)
Duplicate-Carver charges! As he gets to the doorway, Leskni fires off her spell. Duplicate-Carver does not stop. Rounding the corner he lowers his lance. His aim is good. Very good. Atlas admires his work and smiles in appreciation when Armand's blast takes down his clone. Then without warning Atlas feels the most intense pain he has ever experienced. His legs go weak and he looks down to see a lance protruding from his chest. His sword drops to the ground as he tries to speak, but his lungs won't push the air needed. He closes his eyes, scrambles to hold onto life, trying to grab onto some thought to bring meaning to everything, but it is too much to overcome.

Grief overwhelms me as I see Atlas skewered!!!! But I try to hold it together as best I can before the rest of us are killed as well.......
At risk of pulling an AoO, Squeaver needs to get to safety.... and we both need to clear a path for Carver to take out Dupe-Carver. Squeaver attacks Dupe-Mack, then moves (to AD10).

Owen finds himself pressed into a corner and dodging swipes from the duplicate Leskni. Looking about for options he sees Carver's form hurtle into the room and skewer the real Atlas! Owen's martial training and wartime experience steel him for action rather than shock. Owen is a wizard, and magic can still save Atlas. But they need to bring down the duplicate Carver first.
Owen moves with his hasted speed away from the duplicate Leskni, along the wall of the room and then out towards the center, to AF15. He touches his thumb to the bonded ring on his finger and hurls a Fireball into the opposite room, aiming for AK/AL/13/14 (which should include the duplicates of Carver and Mack). They must make a DC 17 Reflex save or take 18 damage. Then Owen turns his pain at Atlas' skewering into the drive to cast another spell. Through the blossoming fireball he lances a Scorching Ray that narrowly strikes the Carver duplicate for a further 9 damage (a ranged touch attack roll of 10 HITS the dupe! Thank you, Carver, for relying on armor!). His cloak billows out behind him as superheated air rushes away from the blasts.

He struggles to understand what exactly happened, but he manages to clear the cobwebs long enough to realize that he needs to get to his feet and move away from mirror like Armand says. He shakily stands, not trusting his legs, wondering if this is real or part of the dying process. Ok, going to pause things here to clear things up
- Firstly, Leskni, you are correct. I misread the acrobatics skill. It specifically says "If you attempt to move through an enemy's space and fail the check, you lose the move action" - not threatened area as I first thought. Your hero point is indeed yours to keep. My apologies for not picking that up.
- I'm going to say that Armand can't use a hero point to throw himself over Atlas. I made the mistake by not fully reading Armand's post, but on the other hand I'm also not 100% it could be done based on positions.
I'll hold off making a DM post for today in case anyone wants to change their actions

Ok, I just want to confirm. I believe that Atlas is both alive and has a fair few hit points (both the channel and the cure having worked on him AFTER he got to 0HP). Is that your understanding of the situation?
And Leskni continues to all out defend and conserve resources :-).

This makes sense, thanks for clarifying Rob!
As for Atlas: 1. He was saved by Leskni, moving him to 0HP 2. He was healed by Armand, moving him to 12HP 3. He was lanced by Clone-Carver, moving him to -8HP 4. He has a constitution of 14, so he'll lose 1 HP per round until he gets to 14, then he dies again :-)

Leskni calls Pella to her side, and goes defensive
Mack and Squeaver team up agains the Pella-clone, but the bird proves itself a hard target.
Carver charges and makes short work of the Squeaver-clone. The albino critter hangs from his lance for a moment before falling to the ground.

The party coordinate their attack...
Mack and Squeaver take care of Duplicate-Leskni
Armand and Atlas deal with Duplicate-Carver
Osul and Leskni deal with Duplicate-Pella
Carver and Owen, well, they look really busy despite not actually hitting anything.
FINALLY all the clones have been slain. Well, almost certainly it was only clones that died.
As Duplicate-Pella is killed and her body hits the floor, all of the clone corpses dissolve into swarms of diminuitive spiders!. Even the items carried by the clones look to be made of spiders. The thousands of spiders quickly disperse, looking for furniture, tapestries, and general cracks to hide away into.
In the end, the only living things remaining in the room are the party.
Well, most likely the party.

"That's just wrong."
He walks over to Atlas. "You my friend have got to be more careful." Armand cast cure serious wounds on Atlas. (burning dispel magic). Atlas is cured 13 hit points. (Not good rolls)

I just don't know how to do that very well." He flashes a smile and a wink. "Thank you for the healing, and everything else you did to keep me alive. I truly appreciate it."
Atlas takes a moment to walk over to Leskni, "Thank you for bringing me back from the dead. I thought I was a goner. We've all come such a long way from when we first met." Without warning Atlas gives Leskni a big bear hug.
After he gets a breather from the battle Atlas responds to Armand, "I agree with Armand, we should rest up. I'm still cut up really bad and I'm sure we could use some time to recoup spells. Shall we eat, setup watch, and get some sleep?"

Beordir is considerably relieved when the silent Carver falls. He steps back, but does not immediately lower his weapon. Then come the spiders. Beordir is not too worried about them as they don't seem to be swarming everyone, but running away. After a few moments, he relaxes as the battle seems to be over.
"Thank the Forest Fruits. That was rough." He listens to everyone triage the wounded and comments, "I could use a little healing, but I'm not very injured. You should prioritize other ahead of me. My spells are not being very effective, but I still have a few left."
Wary of his current spells dissipating, he turns and surveys the room, trying to understand how the enchantment created their clones. There had been a faint coating of transmutation over the floor. Perhaps it's enchantment has been removed which may provide a clue how this effect came about.
(OOC I still have Detect Magic up for a couple more minutes. I'll examine the room again, but shift the enchanted items I find into a pile....with my rapier for later analysis.)
Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 13/13/10; HP: 30/32; CMD: 16 [Hasted!] Monday January 16th, 2017 9:03:18 PM

DM RobC - "I don't fancy doing it with all those spiders about." Tuesday January 17th, 2017 4:39:29 AM
The party start checking each other over for wounds and taking stock of what's left after the battle.
Beordir scans the room with his Detect Magic spell once more before the effects wear off. He determines that all the furniture and tapestries have a transmutation aura to them. Upon closer inspection, he determines that everything looks to have been coated with Unguent of Timelessness. There is no other way they could have withstanded time so well.
The items recovered earlier are also identified: - Hand of the Mage - Pearl of Power (1st level) - Efficient Quiver: This quiver has been made from the blackest of leather. On the underside it looks like someone has been keeping a tally of their kills by scratching into the leather. It currently adds up to 38.
The majority (everyone?) think that the group should take time to rest and recover.
Owen is the one to ask the question: rest here, or elsewhere?
If here, then for how long? Will there be watches? What's the plan?

Let's get back to the first side of the mirror room, we can hope the way behind us will remain clear, and will give us a bit of warning if something should come from in deeper." You both have good points regarding which room to sleep in. I'm fine with either, as I can imagine having issues either way, so I'll just hope that we don't. If I have to choose then I would say to stay here just because I'm standing here now and I am happy to go to sleep right on this spot." Atlas tries to laugh it off, but he's so tired that he's struggling to find a good way to help negotiate between Leskni and Carver. With the 'mirror' completely destroyed the party can see that it simply separated two identical rooms. This may allay Leskni's fears about having to magically cross the room or some barrier again.
Beordir looks to examines any fragements but finds none. He concludes that the 'mirror' was some magical, reflective Wall of Force and did not have any physical component.
Osul is still a little surprised by the encounter. It's not often you get to watch "yourself" get killed.
Carver suggests pulling back to the hallway that lead to these rooms. It looks like the hallway was made to be defensive.
Armand and Owen are in agreement with that plan. Armand does what he can to heal the party.
With the majority in agreement to pull back, the group head back to the passageway with the rope hanging from it. The other end is blocked, meaning only one entrance needs to be guarded.
Atlas is grateful for the talents of the party, and agrees to take the middle watch.
OOC: Please spell out the watches you are taking, othewise, I'll just roll for each person to determine

OOC: Any reason we wouldn't do our standard watch? I just need to add Beordir, Squeaver, and Pella into the mix. Looks like adding Squeaver to the 22:00-0:100 shift puts 3 of us on each watch.

DM RobC - "I could stand watch as long as it was quiet" Thursday January 19th, 2017 5:33:52 AM
The party prepare to camp (your DM assumes in darkness).
Mack thoroughly searches the area, taking quite a few minutes before he is satisfied there are no traps or immediate dangers. Well, none that he can see/hear/sense.
Those on the 1st watch (Atlas, Carver, Owen) stand ready to protect the party. A few of the small spiders creep towards where the party rest, but keep their distance. Carver's hoof would be more than enough to squash them if they got any closer.
The 2nd watch isn't as peaceful. Mack, Owen, and Squeaver can hear noises echoing from far, far ahead. Deep groans and cries. Nothing you can understand, but those noises in the darkness sure doesn't lend to a comfy night's sleep.
The 3rd watch is much the same. Leskni, Mack, Owen and Pella can hear the groans and cries, and even some loud wails! There is most certainly something else down here with the party, but whatever it is, it's still not too close.
Those on the 4th watch may have their guards up by now (Armand, Mack, Osul) but only the soft sounds of the sleeping party members can be heard. Everything else is quiet.
A peaceful nights rest for some, an unnerving night for others.

The DC was 18. Leskni, Carver, and Osul stand ready to support them.
Amrand and Owen are more curious about the passage on the other side of the room. Peering down it, neither can see an end to it. Checking it out in any real detail would mean progressing further ahead - alone - while the rest of the party remain behind examining the doors. Do they dare?
The current depth is quite difficult for Owen to determine. He recalls a mountain range being directly overhead, and what's more, these passageways are fashioned from worked rather than natural stone. At any rate, he suspects the surface to be several hundred feed straight up :)

DM RobC - "While you're at it, unlock the other doors" Tuesday January 24th, 2017 6:47:25 AM
The party once again brace themselves.
Mack finds it surprisingly easy to unlock the door. All the locks, in fact, are easily picked by him. It is likely that the ungent of timelessness spread throughout the room has kept the lock mechanisms in pristine order.
With the locks taken care of, Atlas can once again try to open the door.
This time he does. With one swift move he swings the door open towards himself and sees... a solid stone wall.
The same is behind the next door, and the one after that, and the one after that. Doors that open onto solid stone walls. Someone went to great trouble to give the illusion of many exits (or entrances?) to this room.
Is it a blessing or curse that the source of the earlier wailing wasn't found?

Atlas steps aside to let someone else speak. He looks over the ghostly drow children carefully. All of them are prepubescent girls. They all wear the same style of white dress, and all seem ... sad? Do undead have emotions?
Mack, Leskni and Carver all speak for the group - agreeing that they are indeed here to save the girls. But from who or what?
"The Matriarch" says one of the girls, in a ghostly childish voice
"She keeps us here. We cannot rest" another adds
"Can you really defeat her? Can you really give us peace?" Mya asks. She looks Carver in the face, but avoids his direct gaze.
Armands tries to determine what these children may be. From what he has heard and observed so far, and from what he recalls, it is possible for the victims of a ritualistic sacrifice to not find peace in the afterlife. Best he can tell is that the ghostly children are some variant of a demiurge. It's said that their attacks can affect a persons soul! If true, then Mya did Mack a favour by stopping him from touching her when they first met.
Beordir scans the hallway behind the party and sees a few ghostly children behind the party now as well. They keep a healthy 10ft distance from the party. Even as Squeaver approaches the rear, the ghostly children move further back.
Osul is wary. Not once has he ever come across a "good" undead creature. Perhaps these ones are just neutral? He certainly hasn't witnessed them making any attack on the party, and they probably have had a chance. That they keep a distance from the party could indicate that either something prevents them from coming closer, or, that they don't wish to get closer. His 'gut' doesn't give him the impression that these ghosts pose any imminent threat to the party.
Owen is somewhat more concerned by the claw marks on the walls. The marks are in solid stone, consisting of 4 equidistant scratches. Whatever made them was obviously very sharp and very strong. Armand does not believe a human hand would be possible of doing this sort of damage to stone with their fingernails. The least objectionable thought would be a clawed weapon. The disturbing alternative would be actual bestial claws. There are far too many possibilities however to single out one accurate candidate.
Armand is a little curious what the girls want. What do they mean by save? What do they mean by free? Do they want to be unleashed upon the Wold?

So if you can assist us in reaching this Matriarch, we will fight her to all of our ability. With my friends help, I am certain we will win, and by defeating her, it should release your souls. If that fails, I will use every ability I can to get you to the Lands of Rest. Oh, maybe you can help us with an answer right now. Do any of you know what caused these marks in this stone wall?" Carver will use whatever works, and if these "GHOSTS" are willing to help themselves as well as the team to defeat whatever EVIL is residing here, he will not , not accept it. His Aunt has always said "Even the smallest assistance can turn the tide of battle." "Mya, if a ghostly Centaur, should show up and her name is Matilda, she is my Aunt. Atlas perks up at the idea of a fight with either The Matriarch or a beast that could leave these marks. Both sound like a worthy challenge that will truly test their skill and teamwork. He keeps quiet though, knowing that Carver and Leskni will get to the bottom or things.

To distract himself from the creepy spirits, he takes a close look at the marks in the wall.

Diplomacy of 30
DM RobC - "Don't look so giddy about a fight. Just yesterday you were a kabob." Friday January 27th, 2017 5:52:06 AM Mack patiently awaits the groups next move. He wisely keeps his fingers to himself and doesn't try to touch any of the ghosts.
Carver talks kindly to the girls, practically promising to do whatever possible to help these children "pass over". He asks them for possible aid and starts with something easy: what caused the scratch marks in the stone?
One of the drow ghost girls runs her fingers across the marks "The Shadows?" she asks Mya
"Quite likely. They are trapped down here too" Mya explains to Carver "But they are twisted souls beyond redemption". Even though she is a ghost, Carver can see Mya shudder at the thought of them.
Armand utters a caution to the group to be wary of these ghosts. Mya gives a sheepish grin and looks down to her feet. If there are rituals that require the sacrifice of young women in general, it's not one that he recalls hearing. Sacrifices can often be used for the creation of undead, that much he is sure of. And the sacrifice of sentient beings is most certainly an evil act. Was someone intentionally trying to create an undead army? If so, why young girls?
Beordir tries not to think about being surrounded by ghosts and instead focuses on the marks on the wall.
Armand and Beordir believe that the ghost girls suggestion - Shadows - could well be the source of the marks on the walls. Armand recalls that particularly evil people, especially those who have drained the lives of others, can be raised from the dead as Shadows so they may continue to suck the life from others.
Leskni asks for further information on the Matriarch
"You don't know the Matriarch?" asks one of the ghost girls. She appears genuinely confused and surprised
"She was the leader of the drow" another explains "When the Lava tubes collapsed many, many died. The Matriarch promised an answer. Those who remained believed her so devoutly that when she asked for us they didn’t hesitate to offer us to her."
One girl suddenly looks alarmed "Mya! She's looking for us. She knows we're missing! We have to go."
The ghost girls start to disappear
"Keep following this passage. You can safely rest here. But you must be quiet ahead. I'll try and find you again soon" Mya and the others starts to turn back to smoke again, each asking the same question as they go in a quiet chorus of ghostly voices: "Are you here to save us?"
The wisps of smoke vanish as quickly as they came.
Mack notices that the scratches in the rock where the children were standing form another message: "Vengeance is justice"

And as for that message, well, I don't think there's much we can do about that other than take it as a warning that someone is mad."

The party stop to consider what has just occurred, what they have learned, what they are yet to learn, and what to do from here.
Ultimately, the group has decided not to stop and rest any further - they're all still fresh. Mack is given the nod to proceed.
The party form up in the following order, side-by-side where possible: Mack and Squeaver Atlas Carver Leskni and Pella Osul and Owen Armand and Beordir
The passage continues with a notable decline. After 100ft the passage takes a 90' right turn, then continues for another 100ft, then another 90' turn, all the while descending even further. This pattern continues another six times and the party are most certainly quite deep underground now.
Finally the end of the cavern is in sight. Two large, stone doors block the end. There are no visible handles or locks, and they look to open away from the party. Like the walls of the cavern, the doors are also covered in scratch marks.

As the group descends, "From what I remember, Shadows are in part of both realms, sort of like when someone is using that blink spell, to make it easier to understand." As the group gets deeper and deeper, Carver keeps a good grip on his lance, he knows it's going to be difficult to fight anything that is spectral. He has yet to swear that other Oath to Lord Gargul and he glances towards each of his friends, worried that any of them could be a reason to go to the Lands of Rest to plea for their return.
