Jarlswolf (DM SteveK) Wednesday March 8th, 2017 9:19:11 PM
Edson can't find a permanent town guard, but is able to locate a passerby who laughs. "This is the busiest town in the Valley. There are dozens of strangers that have arrived in town in the last day."
Barratorre has better luck. Fooowing his nose, he finds it is market day and there are six different stalls selling food; some fresh, some cooked, some spicy... all good.
A little looking around, and the heroes can see most of the warehouses in Jarlswolf are on the north side of town, closest to the road leading to Effacia.

Emrys considers the information that he and Evaris discussed along the road to Jarlswolf. There appears to be a lot of sisters to consider. Nothing comes to him at the moment. When they enter town, he decides it's worth an attempt to try and divine Sparkle's location. Emrys thinks of Sparkle, what he saw of her in his vision, and everything he has learned of her. He casts one of his many divinations.

young love’s lad (DM SteveK) Thursday March 9th, 2017 9:20:54 PM
Emrys arrives on the western outskirts and considers taking the time to perform a complicated casting. But the bard/Witch hesitates... Locate Creature will only work on a specific person if Emrys knows her, and he knows he doesn't have enough information for the spell to take effect. Closest he could come would be locating the nearest dwarf.
Brom and Barratorre get some food (and drink!) before they are ready to search. Lanliss goes with and learns that Jarlswolf is the starting place for many caravans to Effacia and Rowena and other locations. About half are owned by a merchant dwarf, Doris Riverstone, and the others owned by many different people or companies.
Evaris and Velarin suggest going around the warehouses and look around there. Maybe the trackers will be able to find something?
The Keepers of the Vale give general agreement and walk to the north of town where there is most of the warehouses. Things are getting frustrated because there are many tracks around the warehouses, and none look to be the trail the heroes need. Sunset is nearing when Edson's perceptive eyes spot a young couple in between two warehouses caught in an amorous embrace!

Emrys recalls the vision he saw of Sparkle being held underground, struggling against her restraints. Maybe that was a false vision. He was thinking that image of her was enough ... alas, he guesses he was mistaken.
(Knowledge [religion]: 24)
It suddenly hits him, he recalls the four sisters more vividly now. Mainly an old, wooden figure carved by his mother. She was quite the artist... many of her creations adorned his childhood home. The carving was of Serenbeth, the name taken for the Goddesses of Ambition ... the Serenbethan Maidens. However she alone was the goddess of Birth and Innocence. Emrys remembers finding the goddess in a chest containing many of his mother's things. His father told him that his mother once prayed to her for a child, and that I was the result. I later found out that wasn't entirely true ... so much of that story was withheld, but it satisfied Emrys the child. The little statue held a flower. That must have been her holy symbol, he assumed. It's uncanny how much Serenbeth resembles Flower the goddess of love.
He wonders if the Serenbethan Maidens are the reason why this land was so contested ... the ambitions of man and unholy beast alike have been drawn to the place like a moth to a flame. It's something to ponder, he thinks.

young love’s lad (DM SteveK) Saturday March 11th, 2017 8:41:10 AM
Emrys thinks back on his earlier teachings of the gods before the Year of Ascension (BACKSTORY: less than a hundred years ago; only two or three generations of heroes... Valdor Dragonstone of the retired hero group Gold Dragons is even mentioned in the stories, but the newest Dragon Group; the Iron Dragons hadn't even formed until after the return of Eberyon). Anyways, he thinks back and recalls the names, but NOT their areas of influence except in the vaguest of terms. Mittri had involved in nature in some way, and Janiterri with... with dreams? The rest is fuzzy. Even Jancassis (whose everyone knows) had a different job before the Year of Ascension, but Emrys can't remember it. He does NOT remember other specifics.
While most of the heroes are in turns amused or wonder what is the Shepherd's angle, Baslim sneaks up on the oblivious young couple and scares the beejeezus out of them! "Eep!" "Waaagh!!" The two young lovers with nothing better to do turn 50 shades of red while Baslim gives them a dressing down, and then some wiser advice.
Edson plays a part (to which the embarrassed couple are too wrapped in their own situation to notice). As Edson trails off, they obiediently give their names; Hmobbi and Hnilly. Hnilly is a likely lad and continues "please don't tell our folks. They're not liking each other and would be furious if they found out. That's why we were hiding between the Big Green and Wayland Transfer. The owners are out-of-Towners and wouldn't care about us."
Looking about where the heroes are gathered in between two warehouses. One, true to its name, is completely painted John Deere Green (Deere having been a prosperous farmer-turned-farm implements merchant Of long ago), and the other warehouse has a sign leaning against the warehouse (obviously recently taken down) that shows a Liontaur in full merchant regalia).

I can summon a dire lion or an elemental, not sure on the blindsense part of those, but what if I start with an area dispel using greater dispel magic? It will effect every spell that overlaps or touches upon a 20' area burst whether it be the darkness, or or on a creature not yet seen.
If there are no objections, and everyone is staying together, V will cast greater dispel as an area dispel 30' ahead of the front party member, effecting every active spell that overlaps into or is in that area.(Dispel check of 21(stupid die roller) effects every spell with a caster level of 10 or lower from my reading of it)

Door, there's no stinking door..... Monday March 20th, 2017 12:25:38 PM
With the door opened, the group starts to head in, but with the first step, they discover before anyone begins to cast a spell, that they had just walked into an area of silence as well as darkness. Velarin motions everyone to back up, Velarin then casts his Greater Dispel. The results are generally successful. The silence goes away, and the deeper darkness centered by the door goes down as well.... Centered in front of the door is a shadowy area where it looks like 2 areas of the same spell are slightly overlapping, the area is 5' wide and about 20' in length shaped like a canoe. Other than that, you have a 60' wide area of dim light due to the Daylight spells the Heroes have previously cast. At the end of the 60' of dim light, it becomes what seems to be regular darkness, so any of the heroes with darkvision will see the following..... Highlight to display spoiler: { There are 4 people, 2 men, 1 woman and a younger female, each is sitting near a wooden post, in the darkness.}
With the way now sort of lit up, what are the Heroes going to do?

As the group moves forward, the Daylight lights up the center 30' of the warehouse and the area where the Heroes entered, it dims greatly after that distance to what would be considered regular darkness in most areas, in some others it brightens to twilight level. There are a couple of wagons able to be seen, near the door where the group entered, but there are stacks of boxes and crates piled in various places around this large warehouse. (it's about 120'x150', an area 60' wide where you entered and the very center of the warehouse are now in light condition, the center is bright light, the opening is normal light)
From the darkness areas, A spell erupts and arrows also come slashing in from two different directions....
First the spell, a bright red seed lands in the middle of the Heroes, catching all of them.... It explodes. (DC 18 Reflex, Damage 51/25 if save) The arrows come in from different directions, The first archer aims at Barratore, Hitting only with the first arrow, it grazes the top of his shield and deflects striking his pauldron, penetrating it doing only 4 damage. The second picks the other target that looks the toughest, Brom. This archer seems to be a bit more accurate, the first arrow finds a joint in Brom's armor, the second hits in almost the same place and the third hits the mithral pin holding the joints of the armor within an inch of where the other 2 arrows hit, but fails to do any damage. Damage done, 1st arrow 18 (crit), 2nd arrow 11. Edson catches some movement from the direction of 1st archer, but the archer goes deeper into the darkness and disappears into the shadows.....

From the darkness, a bead of red explodes, but Brom manages to avoid much of the damage of the spell. The arrows follow shortly after and strike Brom wounding him, but not as much as it would someone else.
Brom just smiles back into the darkness. He looks over at Barratore and says in an excited voice "I call that one." He says pointing in the direction the arrows came. Turning back to the direction of the arrows, he says "Brom gets ta fight, Brom gets ta fight," his voice then drops into a low serious tone, "Brom, gets ta fight." He finishes and glares back into the warehouse in the direction of the arrows with a wide grin on his face. His fists are white knuckled as he grips his sword and his muscles pulsate with visible power.

The swirling fog, above the four spellcasters, blocks the view of all those who fail to disbelieve what their eyes are telling them. However those with magical sight (True Seeing) are able to see it for what it actually is ... an illusion ... and can see through the translucent mist ... not preventing their vision at all. Those not gifted with magical vision (true seeing, etc.) most force their minds, through one's own will power (Will Save: 21), to disbelieve. Once those combatants arrive to that moment of clarity, they too will see through the illusion.
Just a few fleeting moments ago, Emrys had whispered to the three other spellcasters that the fog was an illusion, therefore allowing them to disbelieve. However of the four spellcasters, Baslim is currently the only one needing to do so.
Emrys awaits to see if the rogue panics and flees. He gives Baslim and thankful nod for his healing.

Emrys reacts to being stabbed by casting a spell. Brom strikes out and his first hit, splits the Half-Orc from left shoulder to waist, causing it's dead body to fall to the dirt floor in two pieces. Shepherd Baslim reacts with a spell only after Emrys got attacked (considered it a readied action) , he cast on the Half-Orc that stabbed Emrys, then followed it up by channeling his healing ability. (make another save DC 26 on fail 1 str damage) Velarin chooses to hit the target he can see clearly, the Half-Orc that back stabbed his friend, as a result he launched a stream of magic missiles at him. Evaris casts Spiritual Weapon and sets it to attack the Rogue. Barratore makes a series of attacks at the Half-Orc that attacked him, eventually causing him to collapse into a pile of unmoving Half-Orc. Edson, having been moving stealthily about the darkened warehouse, sees the general location of where the magic missiles came from, he can easily reach the general location with a move,(Caster will have concealment) Lanliss climbs (ground movement of 60' becomes 30' climb), managing to reach the actual rafters, taking a look around, he can't see any target(s).

A combination of the the setting sun on the other side of the building, causing deepening shadows and the Crossbowman's gaseous form as well as his skill in stealth, he seems to have vanished. A quick search shows he has vanished to somewhere....
The running rogue goes out of sight, but was still running as he vanished.
Inside the warehouse, questions are asked of the prisoners.
The little girl does indeed say she is Sparkle Donsdaughter, and that she wants to go home..... One of the prisoners introduces himself as Mage Wilcox, the other two are named, Jhesse Drover and Hmantra of Wolf Hill. Both human and male and female respectively.
None of the prisoners are physically hurt, only a bit hungry and thirsty. Mage Wilcox says, "I overheard those ruffians, I can understand Orcish, and they had no idea that I could. They were to deliver the prisoners tonight, and just before you Heroes broke in, the brute squad, not the Sorcerer or either of the Rogues I mean by that, were getting gear ready to transport us somewhere. I think they were consulting a map or something, but being tied up and facing the wrong direction, sort of makes it hard to see whats going on."
All of the prisoners are glad to have been rescued.....

So Many Choices, So Little Time.... Friday March 31st, 2017 6:31:15 PM
A partial cure for Emrys' problem is found, mean while the map is looked at carefully. on the back in orcish, Entrance only on New Moon, is found, and the basic map can be deciphered easily enough with the Heroes. It leads to a hillside a few miles outside of town. a little calculation and it'll take maybe 2 1/2 or 3 hours to get there, and also the fact that tonight is also a double New Moon, the first rises in 2 hours, the second 3 hours later. The sword is obviously of masterwork quality and it have an extremely well honed edge on it.
The Prisoners, other than Sparkle are happy to be free and are all anxious to leave and get back to their lives. "How am I going to get home? I'm not even positive where I am." says, Sparkle.

Alrighty then. A course of action is necessary. V retrieves his two potions from Emrys, unless he would still like to make use of them.
Let us start with the sparkle and the other young lad here that needs assistance. I would suggest that Emrys in his usual extremely pleasant way, sweet talk an Inn in town, or other suitable location, perhaps a family, into taking them in for the night, seeing to their nutrition, health, and well being at our expense until we return tomorrow. At which point we will escort them home, or make arrangements for it to be done. Taking them in the dark tonight is not a great idea anyway. Should things become problematic tonight, and we are unable to return, we should leave sufficient funds for the above plan.
If we do the first part quickly, we should be able to make quick headway to the maps location to give Brom and Barratore some exercise.

Barratore comes back inside and kicks a crate. They have a map and the possibility of ending these guys. Barratore wants to pursue that avenue. Shepard could push a bit more healing along the way and then he and Brom could pound some bad guy skulls. Unless the runners get there first and sends them all scattering.
"Let's drop the rescued at an inn with a small bag of gold and be off to do some stomping. Sweet talking is fine but gold will speed it right along."

We'll get ya set up at an inn, warm food, baths, warm bed. We should be back tomorrow, maybe the next day, or ya can leave tonight if yur ready."

Agreed Barratore, unfortunately, the other rogue escaped, so we are still on a timeline. A couple of people should go to see about the Inn for our wards while the rest of the group has a chat with mister archer here, and search this place as quickly as possible. Since I have no ability to do either of the things required here, it appears I will be volunteering to go make arrangements at the Inn. Being as the other rogue did escape, and there could be others, I suggest at least one person accompany me, and as soon as we return, hopefully we can make our way toward our destination.

The heroes Discover they were Better than they Thought (DM SteveK) Monday April 3rd, 2017 6:06:19 PM
The dust from the battle settles and the heroes discover not everything was as disjointed as they first thought.
First, the spell keeping the warehouse in perpetual darkness was in fact, only a darkness spell, which Baslim's Daylight spell completely counters.
Second, Baslim's Command spell actually DID stop the running rogue in his tracks, so the heroes are able to capture him easily.
Third, Barratorre's Blinking allows him to keep track of the slow-moving gaseous form of the crossbowman, never giving him a chance to duck away. The half-Orc sees this is only going to end one way and gives up to the Minotaur. Barratorre leads his prisoner back in triumph.
Fourth, Emrys was never poisoned. It was a terrible poison, but the half-elf was able to avoid becoming poisoned in the first place! (So no follow on saves were required)
Fifth, Edson finds a secretary! A close look reveals the ladies have a magical fire trap on the lock! The rogue is going to have to carefully open it if he wants to preserve what's inside... ....
There are the four prisoners, each in a separate cage that the heroes are able to easily spring. Sparkle Donsdaughter is a likely looking teenage girl dwarf who is used to taking care of herself, but has recently had a bad scare and is shivering in after-reaction. There is Mage Wilcox, the man the bounty hunters were after (he's got a knot on his head but is happy to see the Keepers. And a man and woman, Jessie the Drover and Hmantra of Wolf Hill.
And gathering the equipment from the dead and prisoner half-orcs and perusing a wagon that did indeed look like it was being made ready for a trip, the heroes have a Pile that includes: The secretary A pouch with a small lock A locked strongbox Studded Leather, magical 40 Bolts, magical Cloak, magical Two stoppered, opaque jars 2ea chain mail, magical 2ea shield, magical 2 ea longsword, magical Leather Armor, magical Repeating Crossbow, not magical Dagger (from the Rogue), magical

Velarin indeed realizes he never used his scroll spells! A dispel magic takes care of the fire trap, and Edson is able to pick the simple locks on the pouch, secretary, and strongbox. The pouch contains a crude map that looks like it is an X a couple miles outside of Jarlswolf. The strongbox contains 11,000gp in coins and jewelry. Barratorre stays out of the interrogation of prisoners, and Velarin asks Brom to jog their memory, just not too hard...
The rest of the 'heroes' take turns Intimidating, cajoling, or both. Emrys does a good job, Lanliss a poor one, and Edson helps in a non-Good way by actually torturing one of the half-orcs! Evaris goes the opposite route by Diplomatically looking for other information. Baslim gives a good speech, but doesn't have much punch behind it (ooc: skill checks?)
It takes 10 minutes, but the heroes get that the Machine steals souls. They've seen it, and they have heard Garth uses the souls to super-power his spells, but they've never seen Garth himself. It is also quite obvious that both half-orcs are more scared of what Garth will do to them than anything the heroes can do. (Intimidated characters will only do actions [give info] that will not endanger their life. Diplomacy is generally ineffective against creatures that intend you harm in the near future.)
Time is running out for the heroes to follow the map and find Garth's hideout before the evil mastermind gets wise that something is not right and slips away. And the two half-orcs are still here.

Velarin briefly gives a few moments thought as to what kind of horrid creature could suck the life force of a person to power a spell, and then starts to let his wandering mind wonder how this may actually be accomplished until cutting his thoughts short.
"This evil fiend must be destroyed, and every trace of the process by which he does it. There are others who would copy what he has done if given the chance. He may pack a potent punch if he has any spells already powered up. Let us send word to the watch, and leave these two for them. We need to make haste to the location, as time is not our ally, and we are unfamiliar with the location in question.
Evaris [AC 20; HP 117/117] [Bear's Endurance; Good Hope; True Seeing] Thursday April 6th, 2017 11:43:16 PM
Evaris looks grim. "That's probably why he is seeking those with magical talent," he says. "Clearly, we must put a stop to this."
He agrees with Velarin's plan of sending for the watch. If that can't be done, he's content to leave the prisoners here, tied up, until they finish dealing with Garth.

Brom hears more of machine and he is a little disappointed. He was hoping for a golem or something along those lines.
"Let's turn 'em over and get moving." He says referring to the half orc slavers. Brom is not a fan of leaving them for the watch or until they get back. They should make sure they get behind bars.
Shepherd Baslim (Tanner) HP 131 -- AC 13/10/13 -- F+16 R+9 W+19 -- CMD 16 Thursday April 6th, 2017 11:56:11 PM
Baslim clucks his tongue and shakes his head. "Very well. You have kidnapped, practiced slavery, and conspired to murder. You will likely hang, boys. We could have tried to have it reduced to hard labor in exchange for your cooperation... but that ship has sailed." He stands and holds up a hand toward them. "May the Light find you in the Shadowlands."
He stands, turns, and brushes the dust from his shoulders. "Let's turn them over to the law and get moving."

Ok. If we don't want to leave them here, we will drop them off on the way. If Brom and Barratore would each like to haul one, lets drop by the local law on the way to meet Garth. either way, let's get moving.

"I'm sure this Garth will have friends in low places! Maybe it would be prudent to bring these prisoners along, he'll be expecting us to bring abductees that are magically inclined. We only need to tie and gag them."
Edson Kazil - Shawn R; AC: 28 (T 21, FF 20), CMD: 24 HP: 65/65 Friday April 7th, 2017 4:26:12 PM
Edson ponders what he just did and chalks it up to the way these prisoners were treated and trying to get some revenge. That wasn't normally him. He shakes his head to clear his mind and heads out with the others.

"I still think it's best to leave them here," Evaris says. "If we bring them, we'll have to guard them, and I'm not sure we can spare the time. But if you want to bring them, let's hurry. Our time is limited."

I'll drag to the watch on our way out, but I'm not taking them all of the way. That's asking for trouble we don't need
Barratore will grab one in each hand and start dragging the rogues as he exists the warehouse. Onc outside he bellows for the night watch and starts making for the secret plac as indicated on the map

Lanliss makes sure he has everything and didn't lose anything and waits for the eventual depart of the group. When the hencemen are not in earing distance he will say half seriously, technically we can just steal the soul stealing machine for ourselves, not to mention that we can use the machine to steal evil people soul's and use it for the better good of the Wold.
A Resolution (DM SteveK) Sunday April 9th, 2017 8:04:28 PM
Most of the heroes want to deliver the two trussed-up half-orcs to the Jarlswolf authorities, but a few think they should just be left here while they go after bigger fish. And a couple just want to get the show on the road, time is of the essence!
Barratorre takes manners onto his own horns as he just drags the two out of the warehouse and bellows for the Watch!
The lights of street lamps and torches and tavern windows twinkle in the night, and looking south from the warehouses to Jarlswolf, the hero can see the Pitchfork Coucil's Assembly Hall on its hill a couple hundred feet away. Soon enough, three young men trot up with lanterns and cudgels. "Why, its the Keepers of the Vale!", exclaims one, "I went to that party escorting Master Thelonius Bedstraw."
The young watchman quickly gets a summation from the heroes, then has one of his friends pelting back to the Assembly Hall to get reinforcements. They return with 20 watchmen and Thelonius Bedstraw himself! They also have brought quality manacles and locks for the half-orcs' wrists and feet. "Thank you for breaking this kidnapping ring", says the Jarlswolf member of the Pitchfork Council.
The Watch having the half-orcs well in hand and a known member of the Pitchfork Council here, the heroes are free to follow the map or can speak further with Master Bedstraw.

Velarin quickly addresses the watch members and master bedstraw. Thanking you for taking custody of these two. Some of the corpses of their compatriots are in the derelict warehouse over there. You can find two of their victims at the Inn if you need confirmation of what occurred from the victims.
Unfortunately, we must be quickly on our way. The scourge behind this whole mess is still up to no good, and we have a short window to find him. If we have a chance to swing by here on our way back, we will try and do so.

Barratore sets the pair down hard at the feet of the men who show up. V already has the information to Master B and Barratore nods his agreement to everything the Mage has said. Looking to Brom, "Let's go break some heads and a soul sucking machine."
As the group moves, Barratore pipes up to Shepard, "Could use a few more of Alemi's healing prayers here cleric. ". A few strides later he adds, "If you don't mind saying them."

The Shepherd lays a hand on the great minotaur's arm and recites a whispered prayer. The skin under his hand glows briefly. A dull, angry red. The glow is absorbed into Baslim's hand, travels up his arm and chest and neck, and is breathed out of his mouth like a puff of smoke.
He then engages in more traditional healing, imparting the white light of Alemi through several more prayers.
"There you are. May the Light shine on your soul."
ooc: Barratore is healed of 49 damage.
Use Draw Wounds, DC 30. Auto success.
"The healer touches a wounded creature and decides how much healing he wishes to attempt. The healer makes a Heal skill check vs DC 10 + hp to be cured. Success heals the creature and inflicts half the damage on the healer. If the check result is 10 above the DC, the healer takes no damage. This ability is usable once per day."
Then I will burn three 1st-level spells to cast cure light wounds three times.
