A Walk in the Dark (DM SteveK) Tuesday April 11th, 2017 8:44:56 PM
The heroes seem happy to see the Watch and someone they recognize and trust. It is a quick exchange, a 'thank you but it's not over yet' meet and greet and beat feet. None f the Watch or Master Bedstraw try to hinder the group, only variations of Godspeeds and Good Lucks along with friendly waves send the Keepers on their way.
And they have to hustle! Brom checks the stars and knows the New moon for both moons is tonight and only an hour away and the map leads to a spot about 2 or 3 miles away.
Still, the pace is slow enough to allow Baslim to draw some wounds from Barratorre and cast a few healing spells.
An hour's quick walk at night on the north road to Effacia is not hard, but the wind whistles and shadows abound; it is a hectic walk following the map until at last the heroes arrive at the road going over a low rise. There , on the side of the road, a dead tree stretches over the road, a nearby rocky hill, and a stone wall with unique triangular stone top make the map-followers certain that this is where the map pointed.
And... There is nothing here.
A minute passes and the survivalists and astronomers of the team note the black rising of a lightless Wardd. Looking about the sky, they can see an equally lightless Kerracles hovering on the horizon. The two moons are up! Looking around, the rocky hill has silently changed! A spot on the side of a hill seems to fade away, becoming an entrance to a tunnel, a “huge” size tunnel. 15’ tall and wide, it seems to lead into the hill and slightly downward...

The heroes don't even pause for the mundane rooms, preferring to move on, and soon the Darkvision heroes (and later the elves) are able to see something up ahead. The corridor leads to a room, where there are Runes on a wall, dwarven, orcish, high woldian, and even a few that just look like pictographs. There doesn't appear to be any way out.

"A caution my learned friends...some runes are made to do very bad things when read or touched."
While the rogues are checking for traps, V will cast detect magic in hopes of locating a focal point foe the search.
Following all that, if nothing has been found, V will take a look at the Runes and pictographs himself, using his array of languages and knowledges.

At the Glyph room, Velarin is a little late in calling for caution since several heroes are reading the symbols already. But nothing bad happens. Evaris, Emrys, and Lanliss all look. Emrys' knowledge of so many languages immediately realizes that the symbols in the room don't say anything. Some are words, some parts of words, some nonsensical. Lanliss suggests it may just be pictures.
Velarin casts Detect Magic and sees the entire room is a low level abjuration Magic!

It appears we have a slight dead end, and several options. First, we could go back and search the entire place to this point, possibly finding a key or clue or another way forward in the process. Second, we could spend some time determining if the map we followed has hidden text. Third, we could search this room thoroughly for traps, and then treat it as a puzzle to be solved, possibly moving tiles around on a big board if they so move, or break the tiles up into like parts for deciphering. Fourth, we could try and dispel the effect, and see what happens, or fifth, wait for the bad guy to come get his victims

The heroes don't enter the room, trying to find out the secret from the corridor. Lanliss can't find any traps from the corridor or on the door frame. Velarin's linguistics confirms the tiles are completely random. And the eleven wizard succinctly sets up five options.
First, they could go back and search the entire place to this point, possibly finding a key or clue or another way forward in the process. It wouldn't take long since the stable and barracks didn't have much in them. A quick search by some of the heroes reveals... nothing.
Second, they could spend some time determining if the map we followed has hidden text. A quick check of the map reveals... nothing. Which is not surprising since the map was pretty crude and given to Garth's stooges.
Third, they could search this room thoroughly for traps, and then treat it as a puzzle to be solved, possibly moving tiles around on a big board if they so move, or break the tiles up into like parts for deciphering.
Fourth, they could try and dispel the effect, and see what happens.
Fifth, wait for the bad guy to come get his victims. That is, if this is the only exit...

The abjuration throughout the room is a lower level of power, but that could encompass both an alarm spell, or explosive runes. Explosive runes are difficult to disarm by their very nature, and either would likely alert our quarry. So I think starting with a dispel, and then following up with Edson's plan of beefing up a rogue, and giving him a go at the room would be our best tactical move.
Unless his idea is objected to by other party members, V will cast a Greater dispel into the room. V will make it an area dispel that effects every ongoing spell that comes into contact with the 20' radius. V will place the spell in whatever location in the room effects most of the room and tiles based upon room size.

Lanliss takes care in eliminating the trap and unlocking the door. The other heroes provide silent encouragement or get ready, and ...
Click! The door is open and Barratorre strides through, but comes up short as a shambling body blocks his forward progress; it's a zombie! Neither the Minotaur or Zombie attack (maybe the zombie is just a s surprised!), but the heroes are able to see into the next room.
It is a large room, and there are many zombies aimlessly wandering about. On the far side, is obviously The Machine. The Machine looks like an upright coffin with straps and clamps to keep the victim inside and a intricate net of wire and semi-precious gemstones inlaid on the ironwood box and connecting the ironwood coffin with a table with a shallow bowl.
Beside the bowl is a bloated ogre covered in pus-filled boils. Inside the coffin is a half-elf. Just as Barratorre strides in, the ogre snaps a switch and The Machine hums to life. The half-elf's face goes into a silent scream and then goes slack. In the bowl, a glowing red gem appears, and the ogre smiles.
Still smiling, the ogre looks to the doorway with Barratorre and the other heroes right behind, and the smile is gone; replaced by shock and then a snarl of hatred. "You!", he spits with eternal loathing. ....

Velarin pauses, and then moves into the room behind Brom.
Lanliss nearly laughs at something as simple as zombies, and calls for bets on how many Barratorre can hamdle. He goes all stealthy and stays where he is.
Baslim grips his staff and moves up behind Barratore, calling encouragement to the Minotaur.
Barratore is taken almost by surprise and flails at the zombie, making a deep gash that doesn't bleed. Then he slides over to make room for his friends.
Brom moves in behind Barratore and breaks to the left, but the Minotaur is where he intends to be so the barbarian readies on an attack at P11. (20)
Emrys quickly contemplates his next move and pauses.
Edson moves behind Barratorre and heads to the right with bow drawn and ready. (Edson please roll for attack whenever Edson readies an attack. That will make DM adjudication much smoother). .......
The ogre snatches the gem In the bowl and leans on a wicked-looking ranseur. "You! You don't look like Cassias or any of his crew. He's awful particular about only working with other half-orcs. You must be these "Keepers" I keep hearing about. Perhaps I'll take care of you for Skalipy."
"Attack!"
And the boil-covered zombies move forward.
But not in jerky starts! They sprint! And attack! They are fast!
Zombie 1, 5, and 6 all attack Barratorre (Barratorre gets AOO vs 5 and 6). Barratorre doesn't get touched.
Zombie 7, 8, and 9 all attack Brom (if Brom and Barratorre have enough AOOs, they get 'em vs 7, 8, and 9). Brom is slammed twice for 13 and 10 damage, and pus slathers over him like an oily mist! (Brom save twice Fort DC 15 or be diseased)
Zombie 2 and 3 attack Edson (Edson shoots at Z 2) and Edson is slammed once for 13 damage and save Fort DC 15 or be diseased.
Zombie 4 moves up but is too far away to attack.
Garth himself squeezes the gem and casts a spell! A thin fog slides about Barratorre, Brom, Baslim, and Edson; who all needs to do a Will DC 22 save or have -10 on future Will saves.
The gem glows and Garth casts another spell, this time targeting Barratorre with a Dominate Person! Barratorre make a Will DC 22 save or be the lackey of Garth! "Kill your friends", the ogre says with relish. (Barratorre gets another save at Will DC 20 to avoid killing friends against his nature)

Baslim walks to the afflicted party member and lays a hand on their head. A pale yellow glow forms like a corona around their head as he intones a prayer. The yellow glow travels into his arm and stops in his chest. Through concentration, the yellow light turns white, then slowly dissipates.

If the check result is 10 above the DC, the healer is not enchanted at all. This ability is usable once per day."

Emrys moves forward and demonstrates his magical virtuosity! Casting Good Hope, the elven witch gives good vibes to everyone except Edson and Evaris (ooc: no two targets may be more than 30' apart and Valerain is 35' from Edson) Then a Spectral Hand, begins to hover around the elf, and THEN (use up on Hero Point) Emrys casts Slow against Garth and as many undead as possible (which is only Zombie #11). Garth overcomes the spell, but Zombie #11 is Staggered!
Lanliss sneaks up right next to a Zombie...
Evaris casts a Searing Light that blows right through Zombie#1, Zombie isn't quite through yet. With a *pop*, the body explodes in a pulpy mass, striking Barratorre and Zombie#5! (Barratorre takes 8 damage and must save vs disease Fort DC15)
Velarin lays a hand on Brom and tells the barbarian to get ready as he Dimension Doors right in front of Garth! Up close, V and Brom can see a few more details... Garth already has wounds that rip through his body and is a pallid color for an ogre, but is certainly full of life He is also wearing a chain shirt and looks like he knows how to handle that ranseur in his hands, too...
Brom begins to foam at the mouth and begins attacking... the Gem! On the first hit, the gem shatters, and the barbarian focuses his next two attacks on Garth himself, but the armor and tough ogre hide deflects the blows!
Barratorre feels spells eat at his Will, his cold eyes turning to look at Edson in a way that very few beings have ever survived. And yet his honor, his family, demands another outcome and the Minotaur breaks free of both the Mind Fog and the Domination! It takes two swings to kill Zombie #5, and it doesn't look like Barratorre will ever stop... Zombie #5 explodes, spraying Barratorre and Zombie #6 with pus! (Barratorre takes 9 damage and save vs disease Fort DC 15)
Edson manages to wound Zombie#3 once...lightly.
Baslim delayed to make sure none of his companions needed to drain a spell. Seeing them all acting normal, the Shepherd looks to Channel positive energy to wound many zombies. While only one failed to resist, all of the front row of zombies were affected, and Zombie #6 explodes in pus! (Barratorre takes 9 damage and save vs disease Fort DC 15) ...... The zombies mindlessly attack, 2 on Edson, and three on Barratorre, and each hero is struck once (Edson takes 8 damage, and Barratorre takes 10 damage, and both must sae vs disease Fort DC 15)
Zombie 4 and 10 rush in (Barratorre gets one AOO on each) and they both miss the Minotaur too.
Zombie 11 staggers forward.
Garth laughs. "I've been draining Noble races with magical aptitude for years and you think one Gem makes a difference? I have dozens! But before that happens?" The ogre takes a step back and casts a Knock spell opening the double doors closest to Barratorre, and ten more zombies stream out into the room. As if responding to telepathic commands, the fast plague zombies don't attack Barratorre and instead surge against Velarin and Brom! Only two are able to get to the pair and attack, but both of those go against the elf wizard! (Velarin is struck 3 times for 33 damage and must save three times for disease at Fort DC 15)
Garth isn't finished as he taps the power of another Gem that briefly glows from a pouch on his belt. A Lightning Bolt strikes Brom and Velarin (35 damage Reflex DC 22 for 18 damage)

Evaris hurries forward and casts a Magic Circle Against Evil, centering it on Baslim, Barratore, Emrys, and Evaris are now under a Protection from Evil spell.
Brom the Barbarian ignores the arriving zombies and steps up to the ogre, striking once! 34
Barratore considers this is possibly the the most vile and foul combat he had ever been in! He bellows again and takes a more defensive stance, clearing out zombies as they approach!
Emrys is clearly disappointed with the effectiveness of his Slow spell, but he immediately understands his error. By targeting Garth and as many undead nearby, he effectively eliminated targeting most of the zombies in the room, because most of them were more than 30' away from Garth. He wonders if the ogre has been cursed with undeath as well, and attempts to cast a spell to ascertain the facts, but a Ley Line slips elusively through his fingers!
Baslim channels energy again, positive energy attacking the nearby zombies!18 positive energy damage, 30' range, Will DC 18 for half damage.
Edson swings twice at number 3. Hitting twice and opening fresh, unbleeding wounds. The Mind Fog is affecting him, but until he encounters a spell or affect the attacks his will, his susceptibility is only a potential problem...
Velarin reels from the combination of zombie hits and apologizes to Brom before taking a step away and teleporting to safety!
Lanliss begins to attack Zombie#2, striking once, deeply!
......
Five zombies explode in pus-filled gobbets of flesh due to blade and positive energy. Four of them blow up near Barratorre and one near Edson. (Barratorre takes 37 damage and must save vs disease Fort DC 15 four times, and Edson takes 12 damage and must save once)
Zombie #2 attacks Edson, striking once (Edson takes 12 damage and save vs disease Fort DC 15)
Zombie #7 and 10 attack Barratore, both missing
Garth steps back again, which allows the ten new zombies to surge around Brom and become a living wall between the magical undead ogre and Brom. (Brom can take as many AOOs as he is allowed as the zombies flow around his flanks). All ten zombies can't get to touching distance of Brom, but none can, and they flank and pummel the barbarian mercilessly. (Brom is hit seven times for 73 damage and must save seven times disease at Fort DC 15)
Garth grins and casts another spell, and fog billows up, (Fog Cloud) hiding Garth, Brom, and ten zombies from the other heroes. Brom can't see Garth (and vice versa), but he hears the casting of another spell, and a laugh from Garth; "you will die, barbarian, knowing you are only the first of your friends".

Barratorre continues to get assaulted by exploding zombies, their deaths more effective than their fists, but his concern is for Brom, beleaguered by fog and more zombies. He strides forward (each zombie gets an AOO, missing) and, moving out of immediate zombie reach but within minotaur reach, Barratorre strikes and kills Zombie#10. It erupts into a shower of diseased flesh, yet with no one within 5', it doesn't affect anyone.
Ooc: Brom cannot be flanked I don't know if that changes numbers or not. Also can you let me know the number of hits. (DM SteveK: Oops, yes! And I miscounted too. Only 8 zombies can attack Brom. That and the no flanking a barbarian thing reduces to just 4 hits for 7, 9, 9, 8 = 33 damage)
Brom's momentary glee at striking the ogre is ungulfed by cowardly fog and a horde of zombies! He begins a battle chant, and begins chopping. He kills one zombie and wounds another. The dead zombie evaporates in a cloud of bone and diseased spores, and Brom takes 10 damage. Already diseased, more exposures do not make it worse, so the barbarian doesn't have to save again.)
Edson has a bad moment in the battle as he can't overcome the disease carried by the zombies and can't connect with Zombie #2
Baslim wants to get to Brom but plays it safe, channeling again and bringing the Light against the two zombies within range. Zombie #2 explodes and Zombie #7 is the only original zombie left. ooc: 22 positive energy, 30', Will DC 18.
(Zombie #2 showers Edson and Lanliss with pus-filled flesh chunks, causing 13 damage and save vs disease Fort DC 15 [if the hero is already diseased, no need to save again])
OOC: DM SteveK Sorry, Tanner, but no. In Pathfinder, Channel Energy affects EITHER living OR undead; the PC/NPC chooses which version of channel at the time of channeling. Since Baslim specified damaging the undead, the positive energy does zero healing to living creatures.
Evaris runs after Barratorre, ignoring Zombie #7 (who takes a swipe at the cleric causing a wound for 13 damage and save Fort DC 15 or diseased) and casts Cure Critical Wounds on the Minotaur, healing him for 41 damage. (ooc: email from Kathy)
Emrys wants to help Brom, but the confounding Fog Cloud is in the way. Not for long! A handy Ley Line and Quickened Dispel Magic blows the offending spell to nothing! And then, the elf Witch is able to wet his finger in the slightest trickle of a leyline, sending his spectral hand out to Brom to deliver a Stoneskin spell, making the barbarian's skin hard like stone! (Brom gains DR10/adamantine for 100 damage) .....
Zombie 7 follows Evaris and attacks the cleric (did not pass through Barratorre threat square so Barr doesn't get an AOO). He strikes Evaris once for 11 damage and save Fort DC 15 or diseased!
Zombie 11 staggers up to Barratorre, too slow to attack and move the same time (Barratorre gets an AOO
The other zombies surge around Brom ignoring the looming threat from behind ( almost like following the last command they were given), and eight sets of fists (no flanking) slam into Brom! Five times he is hit! Five fists are mostly absorbed by the Stoneskin! (12,12,10,9,9). 48 damage to Stoneskin, residual is two hits at 2,2=4 damage to Brom!

The Machine and the Rooms. (DM SteveK) Tuesday May 2nd, 2017 9:30:52 PM
Healing comes from Evaris and Baslim and some potions.
Barratorre and Edson check out the rooms and find both sets of double doors lead to the same room. It is dark and smelly as a recent tomb. Basically just a place to stuff zombies until needed. There is nothing interesting in this room.
Brom sets his sword to The Machine, and CHOP. HACK. MAUL. Soon the Machine is turned into rubbish, just parts and wire and gems. Collecting the gems together may provide some recompence...
Baslim and Velarin consider being able to track Garth without any brilliant ideas.
Lanliss stands to the side, keeping away from any potential backblast of destroying the Machine, and notices something unusual... The wall behind The Machine (where Garth had his back in the recent fight), seems punctured by many holes of about one inch. "Since Garth doesn't appear to have gone anywhere else, he either went behind the wall or teleported. I would suggest that those that are able to try and locate secret doors do so, as there may be one here. Barring that, I would prefer Brom go through the wall if he can. More healing by Evaris, and the discussion narrows to the gems and the ventilation holes.
Emrys is able to discover that 12 of the gems are glowing with Necromantic magic. Brom and Velarin can confirm the 12 do look exactly like the one Brom sundered in Garth's hand. These 'Power Crystals' are Fist sized crystals that look like sparkling rubies. They are almost certainly the souls of drained noble race people! There is a pile of other gems that, if appraised, could be useful to the heroes.
Lanliss is the one to carefully note the wall where Garth was standing seems thinner than the other side...

We are still on the hunt for the moment. Let's collect and bag the gems for now, and follow up on that once we have dealt with Garth.
The thin part of the wall is possibly a door, if we can open it. If not, perhaps Brom would be so kind as to deal with the thin section of wall in the same manner as he dealt with the machine.

Garth's Lab and No More Escape Tunnel. (DM SteveK) Thursday May 4th, 2017 9:04:31 PM
The suggestion to collect the gems is made and done; one bag containing 12 magical Power Crystals that are probably captured souls (and Brom has sundered one in battle with Garth with no ill effects). And one bag of non-magical gems that could be good for some coin.
Lanliss points out the thin area, and Brom soon cretes a medium-sized hole into the room behind. It is dark and the dust of a pummeled wall is in the air. With a lantern or Light spell, the contents are revealed. The room is smallish, several tables with scraps of paper and gems in wires; there is a bed; and there is a chest the size normally used for clothes. There is another way out of the room, but immediately there is a rumble from that passage. A minute later, dust blows out. A search confirms the escape tunnel is completely blocked by fallen debris.

This room was for the likes of Edson to check out and clear, then he would remove anything that needed hauling

Turn into an elemental,no. Best I could do would be to summon some to start clearing the debris. It might be worth the effort if it's possible to do. We do not know where this leads, or what other abominations he may have hidden below. If we leave now, the trail goes cold for the time being, and Garth is left to cause more harm to Cinnamon Valley.
While the elementals work, we could deal with those of us that are poisoned, and search Garths belongings for more clues. Do our healers have anything left to deal with being poisoned?
Unless the group decides it's not a good idea, V will cast Summon monster 5 to summon two medium earth elementals and instruct them to start removing the debris blocking the tunnel.

Edson checks out the chest. It is not trapped, quickly opened, and the rogue discovers 98,000 gold pieces! (They seem the same type of gold the half-Orc kidnappers had in their belt pouches)
Evaris looks over the scraps of paper. Most are drawings of gems and wire, looking like different patterns on how to make the Machine work. There is a dusty scroll that is a treatise on a group called the Sons of Dread. The manuscript describes how the Sons built many magical machines to have a quick solution to gathering power. They were also the group that built a huge machine that allowed Marteus to challenge Alemi as chief deity and killed Domi and many other gods. Yes indeed, the Sons of Dread were very bad people!
Lanliss sees the tunnel is stable, and so Velarin summons some earth elementals, but they can't clear the debris before they dissipate. This is a very, very plugged tunnel! As Barratorre notes, the trail has gone cold and Garth has escaped, but the kidnapping ring is broken and so is the Machine. All in all, a good week's work!

They collect both bags of gems and scraps of paper...
Barratorre and Lanliss get into a discussion about bringing down the rest of the ceiling. With a little effort, they are confident that they can collapse at least half the chambers and certainly the entrance they found in the hill. This would make the hideout nearly uninhabitable.
