Three of you continue the conversation about dragons while Gothruk wonders about the decision to call Elixirs of Domi after a god. He then adds, “Say, as you've been paying attention who do you think will be our greatest competitors? Any returning champions or clear favourites we'll need to worry about?” Rolth thanks Gothruk for the tasty brew and admiring the dancing of Allura, Rolth enthusiastically greets Tsak, a fellow sailor, and welcomes him to the party. "Lucky number eight, and a seaman too! Have a seat, and let's hear more of this tale about the Dragons." More quietly he adds, "What's a neophyte? Should I be insulted?" Tsak, enjoys a bit of anonymity but realizes it’s time to go to work. The exuberant fella who did all the singing seems to have a bit of go in him, and judging by the fact he didn't cop a cosh to the head he also has some friends in the room. Tsak wanders over to see if they need an 8th, and if his expertise in sailing is of interest to the group... Tsak responds, "Nah, he just means we're young, and maybe a bit inexperienced. Both of which are true, other wise we wouldn't be asking him about Dragons." Sable lumbers out of the dark corner he was hulking in, and nods to Kiwina. “Please, go on – what about the Dragons?”
The stranger puffs on cigar. He stretches out his large liontaur front legs and speaks with a backward twang and a stutter as he moves his Rs around his canine teeth. “You’all will have one great competituar and that would be me,” the liontaur stands. He a muscular but short. He is a taur of great charisma and he knows it. It makes up for any deficit in height or the stutter. “Name’s Clayfus.” He’s dressed in an adventurer’s outfit -- sword and bow, studded leather armor, a backpack, and rope and a dagger at his belt. He looks you up and down. “...if my guess is rright, you’re here for the Rrose Quest. Huh?”
Before you get much of a chance to talk to this fellow, your attention is drawn to the sound of music outside in the street. Rushing out all together, you see a ... parade? There is a band of centaurs playing instruments, and dancers (mostly elves and half-elves), and eight people who look to be the center of attention. The eight -- dressed in the finest adventuring gear -- consist of four centaurs, two elves, a half-elf, and a graceful human. They wave and smile to the people as they head from the dockside area toward the side of town where the town spikeball field has been prepped for the opening ceremony.
The parade passes, and in the relative calm following, you see that the sky is overcast and the breeze from the unknown west is strong coming in over the docks, strong as it pushes your hair and strong as it bull-rushes the smell of salt and fish into your noses. That’s the way it usually is here in Chessford, called Velawia in the liontaur tongue, the only town of note here on Liontaur Island. So you’ve come to understand, since you arrived here in town for the Taurnament of Roses!
You are at the busy intersection of Market Street and Hound’s End, two of the rare cobbled streets in town. The Sandifurr Mercantile is the biggest building in sight, a big wood and stone building with two sets of double doors. Of course, every building here, built as they are for people weighing 500 pounds or more, is big, but this one is bigger. Okay, it is not the biggest shop in town, not by a long shot, and it is more run down than most, but at least you can be sure the clerks inside speak Common!
Of course, the Sandifurr Clan are well known to Rolth, who has been to this town before. He knows the clan has a reputation for fair dealings, even if they are not the sharpest traders in town.
Kitty-corner from the mercantile is the Wanderers’ Roost, from which you just emerged.
What you know so far is scanty but compelling. Three ancient taurs are running a contest or holy quest or game or something to find some magic roses. They are offering prizes, and the top prize is rumored to be a wish! Or magic as strong as a wish! That alone has piqued your interest, and drawn you to Chessford for the opening ceremony. But aside from that, there is clearly a lot you do not know. Maybe this Clayfus fellow has more to tell?

Rolth is excited by all the action, and yearns to know more. He turns to the handsome liontaur and exclaims, "Well met, Hunter Clayfus! May the wind always be in your face, and your prey under your paws. You seem a redoubtable prowler, yet even if you count for four, where is the other half of your band? For surely you would not seek to enter the Taurnament without two full paws of adventurers! And this wondrous Elixir of Tomi, what glorious power does it grant? Any idea what challenges await us? I hope that they are worthy foes!" (Diplomacy = 15) Rolth trails off a little breathlessly...

As the liontaur, Clayfus stands to speak Falco is clearly impressed and then slightly disappointed when he sees none of his blades were made by his family.
He can’t be that great without a real quality weapon.
“Hi there big guy. Your certainly formidable, don’t mind me.”
Giving him a grin. “Would you mind telling me what the Taurnament of Roses is like? I am nervous with it being so unknown to me.”

Finnian (Zeke) (HP:11/11; AC: 16; Touch: 13; Flat: 13; CMD: 17) Monday May 1st, 2017 9:01:44 PM
Finnian glanced and Falco and then to Clayfus clearly wanting to hear the Liontaur's but to awkward to voice his own question.
"He doesn't seem nervous" Finnian thought to himself as he awaits the answer.
He jumps a bit at the sudden noise of the parade. "I've been away for too long if a small towns parade can make me jump." He accidentally whispers out loud. He looks down and runs his fingers along the intricately carved bow and it seems to settle his nerves a bit.
Kiwina (Steve M) (16/16 HP | AC:14; Touch:11; Flat:12; CMD:15) | Status: None Monday May 1st, 2017 10:03:09 PM
Kiwina enjoys the breeze and wonders if this taurnament will take him back onto the ocean. If it's a quest, it might. If a contest, perhaps not. He eagerly waits for Clayfus to respond, thinking the short fellow might take a liking to Rolth.
"Should we return to the inn for more beer?"

Tsak is interested in learning more, but wanders what benefit this Clayfus would get from sharing information with them? In any case it seems that Rolth and Falco have got the conversation covered, so Tsak will sit in the background. Returning to the Inn for more beer certainly gets his vote...
Matthew S. Co-Dm - Elixir of Clayfus Tuesday May 2nd, 2017 9:09:06 PM
Rolth says, "Well met, Hunter Clayfus! I hope that they are worthy foes!" The liontaur joins the others as they file outside to see the parade. “The Elixir of Domi, is a powerful jolt, boy, Just as Domi bolsters the weak, his elixer shores up the drinker’s weakness. I have heard some stories…” Clayfus trails off while watching a couple other liontaurs marching and shouting within the parade. They wore large purple sashes and carried large mugs. “Nervous, hah,” he says loudly to Falco. “Nerves will get you no where. Well, this taurnament has not been seen by any taur in living memory. The Roses bloom only once a century, Sure, there arre other tourr...naments, but not like this one! Maybe that’s because it’s a taurr... tournament.” Clayfus laughed. “I hear the quest is a trio of trials all ending in an acquisition of an enchanted rrose. I hear it’s a rrace too -- only the winners get the elixer.”
Sable and Finnian listen to the conversation. Finnian is a bit jumpy while Tsak stands back pondering more beer. Clayfus does hear Kiwina talk about returning to inn but he redirects the group to the opening ceremony. “You did rr..egister, your group… correct? If not, you better do that soon.” With that the liontaur began to tromp off, but then turns. Gothruk says, "I just want to know where and when to be for us to start.” “Oh, well. There is a table set up outside of the Spikeball Field … just in case you forgot to register. Just follow the parade!” He then joins the other liontaurs in the parade shoving them around a bit.

Tsak Rezar (Damien) AC15 (T13/F12) 12/12 HP| Falchion +4 2D4+3|Status: None Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 6:27:54 AM
Tsak figures that foregoing a beer to join a mighty adventure is a fair trade. So many questions though, what are the 3 trials, what is my biggest weakness and could it be fixed permanently, what color would a rose be if it only bloomed every 100 years, who were those liontaurs with the purple sashes and what might it cost to register in the Taurnament? Shrugging his shoulders he figures there's only one way to find out and ambles along with the rest of the party.
Rolth Niheow (MarkBat) (16/16 HP | AC: 14; Touch: 11; Flat: 12; CMD: 17) | Glaive +3 1d10+4 x3 | Paws (2) +1 1d4+1 x2| Status: None d20+3=11 ; Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 6:53:56 AM
Rolth gleefully joins in the parade, and will jostle with the best of them (STR check = 11) if the sport seems in good fun rather than bullying. He will also keep an eye out for his smaller companions, making sure that no one roughs them up untowardly. It wouldn't do to arrive without all eight petals on our rose!

Falco falls in line with the others as they make their way to the registration area.
A once in 100 year competition what an interesting thing. A victor will surly aid me in my quest for arcane knowledge.
Seeing the roughhousing that is going on with Rolth and some others he decides it prudent to walk half a step back from the others so as not to get trampled by the bigger bodies. It is clear they are being careful but no sense in being foolhardy on a simple walk.
Allura Barrin'tor (Clark) d20+11=26 ; Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 11:18:00 AM

Finnian sticks close to Falco knowing that if he were in the midst of all the Taurs he would surely be stepped on, or at least bumped into, and neither seemed very appealing to the half-elf.
I must enjoy myself. He thinks to himself. This is a parade, a celebration. The rose blooms once in 100 years. This is my only chance just embrace it Finnian.
His silent motivation seems to have worked, atleast a bit, and as he falls in next to Falco he begins to skip and a hint of a smild crosses his face.
Rose Quest Registration (Co-DM Cayzle) Wednesday May 3rd, 2017 11:37:11 PM
Sable, Gothruk, Rolth, Falco join the parade near the end. The jostling gets a bit rough at times but it’s a jovial celebration. Rolth seems best prepared to jostle back.
Falco stays behind a bit to avoid the large, playful creatures ahead.
Tsak asks himself follow up questions. Clayfus joins the two liontaurs. The ones that caught his attention before, stand at his side. He seems to be scolding them at first then joins in on the celebration.
Allura leads the group and attempts to start a conversation ... She learns that the purple sash liontaurs are part of Clayfus’s group -- indeed, two of them wrestle a sash onto him too. There are eight all together. They talk about the Rose tournament, but none seem to be too clear on the details either. She draws them out, and discovers that they are worried about the competition. Not you guys, of course, but they heard that several competing teams are powerful and geared up with lots of magic. They are also worried about cheaters.
The informal parade passes through town, past the huge sprawling clanhouses of the liontaurs, to a huge meadow, where you see sheep grazing. There is a huge gate here, and a table set up nearby. You see lots of liontaurs busy working, erecting stands, building a pavilion, and carrying in boxes of flowers. A centaur and a halfling are at the table organizing things.
“Registration! Over here!” shouts the halfling -- speaking Tauric -- who is staffing the table and making notes. Your group and Clayfus’s gets to the table -- the eight liontaurs, with their native speed, arrive before you. The halfling says to Clayfus, “What’s your team name?”
The centaur adds, “You have to have a team name to register!”
Sense Motive vs DC18. If you make the check, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice a bit of tension between the very short halfling and the centaur as the halfling tries his best not to be trampled on. } A pal of Clayfus steps up and declares, “We’re the Wrestling Wemics!”
The centaur also says, “There’s no entrance fee, but you have to convince me you are serious before we let you register.”
The Wrestling Wemics say, “Watch this!” They put on a demonstration of grappling and boxing. The centaur nods and allows them to register.

Finnian gathered his courage "You must tell them why you are here, and be convincing Finnian.
"I am Finnian," The half elf said stepping forward and addressing the Centaur "I have been traveling through your forests for the past year looking for the perfect stave for my bow. Having found it I headed here for the tournament." He pulled the bow out and showed it to the centaur. "When I met these adventurers we decided to work together. We are The Eight-Petaled Rose, and here," he says pointing just above the grip "Is our symbol." A perfectly carved compass rose ordained the bow.
Having shown his devotion to the cause Finnian made a slight bow to the centaur, and then to the halfling and stepped back.
Matthew S. Co-Dm - Elixir of Clayfus d20=18 ; d20=10 ; Thursday May 4th, 2017 9:56:17 PM Kiwina declares that they are the Eight-Petaled Rose. "The aumakua of my tribe led me here and to these companions from lands beyond your ken. You may take my word that we are serious. My own tribe are the Honu, masters of wind and wave. I will not play like a kitten for your amusement." The registration centaur paws at the dirt beneath him and stomps. He purses his lips to think. Then nods his head.
Tsak fixes the centaur with a glare. “Sir if as a warrior I fail to 'show some skin' in your game, then honor would demand I hand over my sword as forfeit!” The centaur studies Tsak. He looks like he takes this registration job seriously. He would make a mighty foe, if provoked.
Gothruk tries to understand the deeper meaning of the centaur’s comments but fails to discover anything. He then adds, “While we aren't a specialised group, our many facets and strengths should make us interesting competition. I would hope that I also do not look to be playing around.” His attempt to be intimidated is dismissed politely. Well ... depending on your view of politely ignoring the attempt. “If I fail to entertain the crowd during the competition then I will, on my honour, work without pay for 2 weeks doing whatever this town needs of me, be it cleaning stables or moving lumber for buildings.”
Falco stands in front of the halfling with a smile, which is returned quickly. "Like a rose’s many different petals create its beauty, our variety creates our strength. Permit us to compete and a fellow halfling will be part of this century’s winning team." “Thank you,” replies the halfling official. “I wish you luck with your taur companions; they can be quite hard headed sometimes.” The jab pointed at the large centaur standing above him.
Finnian steps up to introduce himself. "I am Finnian," the half elf tells the Centaur. "I have been traveling through your forests for the past year looking for the perfect stave for my bow. Having found it I headed here for the tournament." He pulled the bow out and showed it to the centaur. "When I met these adventurers we decided to work together. We are The Eight-Petaled Rose, and here" -- he points just above the grip -- "is our symbol." A perfectly carved compass rose decorates the bow. The centaur nods at Finnian’s response, and at the others. He grants that you have convinced him that you are serious.
Speaking of seriousness, Rolth wonders about the seriousness of the halfling. He watches the small person quickly process the registration of a group that includes two tiny people dressed in green -- are they leprechauns? Those questers might have had a hard time at the centaur table. But Rolth turns his attention from the wee folk and declares, "I have marked my flesh permanently in honor of the occasion. You may perceive that the compass rose has eight points, one for each petal of the Eight-Petaled Rose. Four large petals for the taurs, and four representing those of smaller stature but equal valor. The unbroken circle signifies our unity of purpose. This is proof that our intentions with regard to the Taurament are determined, well thought out, and unmistakably serious." “Nice,” the halfling says. “Who did that for you? I know a very nice tattooist in the Floating City. Her shop is in the lower level, you should go see her some day.” “Hey, no conversating,” the centaur spits angrily. “We have a large number of registrations to work through and you’re holding up the line.” “Sure thing, big guy ... Sorry if I’m trying to make this a pleasant event and I’m not all serious.” With that the small halfling danced around, mimicking the centaur as much as he could. The centaur turned to the halfling. “Small halfling, you are very lucky to be in a relationship with my sister. I would punt you halfway across the island if I had I could. It’s already a ridiculous notion to be in a relationship with a taur …” “I’m sorry, are you talking to me? I’m trying to work,” the halfling replies sharply. He then stamps several documents, writes out “Eight-Petaled Rose”.

Tsak breathes a silent sigh of relief. He'll stand by his oath, but starting a fight with the entrance committee was never going to be a great beginning to the Taurney. He turns toward Finnian to express his admiration for the workmanship of both Finnian's bow, and the carved compass rose upon it. Hey Finn, would you be able, and willing, to carve that symbol into my sword?

To Kiwina's suggestions, he responds, "Excellent ideas, all. Yes, let us mingle here and back at the inn, and see what more we can learn about the Taurnament and our competitors. (Diplomacy to Gather Information = 13) Then provisioning at Sandifurr Merchantile and the Catacombs branch, finish tattoos for those who would like one, and rest up for the big day!"
Assuming the others are amenable to the above, Rolth will purchase alchemists fire at Sandifurr's and a Potion of Cure Light Wounds at the Catacombs. -------------------------------- OOC The Catacombs link appears to be broken, so I could not enter the page. "I don't know about a tattoo, I am not really the kind to get tattoos. Are you any good? There permanent right? Finnian asks hesitant about marking up his skin. "oh just do it Finnian, the whole point of leaving home was to experience new things." he psyches himself up and finally replies "Ok, a green compass rose on my shoulder, I'll do it. Thank you Rolth," He adds and allows the hulking Liontaur to give him his first tattoo.

The atmosphere around the Spikeball field is electric. No seriously. There is an dancer/entertainer rehearsing for tomorrow’s festivities with an enchanted whip. Electricity crackles with every strike of the long leather weapon. No danger, you think, given the crowd of people standing around the entertainer, Owwwing and Awwing. On the other side of the field is a group of Spikeballers talking to fans. Huge taurs with decorated jerseys enjoy the attention. Others are just busy setting things up for tomorrow.
Rolth offers a small, one color rose tattoo to the others on the team. His teammates mention some of the choices. He responds, "Excellent ideas, all. Yes, let us mingle here and back at the inn, and see what more we can learn about the Taurnament and our competitors. Then provisioning at Sandifurr Merchantile and the Catacombs branch, finish tattoos for those who would like one, and rest up for the big day!"
The group wanders back to the Wanderer’s Roost, where you can go shopping at the mercantile and then relax for the evening.
Rolth’s efforts to gather info are not fruitless. He learns that there will be three judges, one from each taur race, and who are paying for everything. He also learns that ships are arriving every day at the harbor for some quest-related reason.
Tsak takes a breath, happy to avoid confrontation, and asks Finn for a copy of the carving on his bow. Finn reddens a bit and adds, "I am much more talented at working with wood than with metal, but perhaps Falco and I can work together to engrave it." He wrestles with the thought of a tattoo then agrees to it.
Sable is also impressed by Finn’s bow and comments. He also welcomes one of Rolth’s rose tattoos.
Falco says, "Tsak, if Finn has any problem I am sure I can do it. I have developed a technique for lightly etching metal with summoned acid." Falco quickly summons a small glob of acid which he holds as a display before getting rid of it. "Rolth I would welcome a tattoo. How painful are they? I was thinking someplace visible."
Allura adds, "That is quite the design you have come up with, perhaps you would not mind placing it here," She lowers her sleeve to reveal her bare shoulder, " This please use a white ink, it has significance to me."
The night is spent crafting tattoos and relaxing before the big event.
===== ===== =====
There is no way to sleep in late on the day of the Opening Ceremony! The minstrels and revelers start early, and a gang of cubs is whooping it up at an early hour under your windows at the Wanderers' Roost. The breakfast is even more meaty than usual, with pork sausages, sipi ribs, and eggs all on the menu. And once you hit the street, the way to go is also unmistakable. The roar of a crowd can be heard out by the edge of town, and the Chessford Field, a meadow cropped close by the herds of sheep that usually gaze there, is clearly crowded already.
As you walk to the Field, you note that the town is far more crowded than usual with a medley of races - not just centaurs and minotaurs, but lots of humans, elves, dwarves, and other races you may not have encountered before.
The imposing carved gate at the entrance of the field impresses as always, but it is bedecked with flowers of all kinds all around. The oaken statue of Domi creating the Taur races is wearing a flowered necklace known as a “lei,” and you might wonder at how someone climbed up the 25 feet high Gate to bestow it on Him.
An older Liontaur talks about how disrespectful it is, but nearby youngsters laugh about it good-naturedly and urge the granpops to lighten up.
The site is an open-air meadow with booths and stands around the field. The two huge Spikeball goals stand at opposite sides of the field. Once through the Gate, you see that the stands are already filling up.
Some expert lawn manicurists having worked on this through the night, making it perfect for the event. A liontaur rushes up to you, clearly recognizing you as a group of questers. “Ah, the Eight-Petaled Rose! Let us hope that your name is a good omen! Come on, come on, you’re supposed to be on the field!” He leads you onto the field itself, where there are a number of groups already in place. You see that the raised pavilion on one side of the field they were working on yesterday has now been completed. The groups are gathering in front of the pavilion. “The Three Judges will be at the Pavilion,” says the liontaur, who is wearing an official-looking red velvet sash. “Please pick a spot and stand ready!”
You see that the field has been sectioned off into boxes. Looks like the lines are made of sprinkled flour. You have to pick a box for your group. Do you pick one right in front of the pavilion, where you will see and hear the Judges best? Or at the very rear, where you will be able to see and evaluate the other teams? Or somewhere in the middle?

Gothruk having exercised and trained through the remainder of yesterday was ready to go. He was still thinking about weather or not to get the tattoo, but was steadily leaning towards the affirmative. He leans over and whispers to his team "I think we should choose a place near the front of the pavilion, that way we can get a better look at the judges, we'll grow to learn our opposition, but I don't think we'll see the judges up close as often. Care not to stare though" He says before laughing. I'd hate to appear rude

Walking with the others through town, Kiwina is delighted to see the humans, menehune*, and other races he is not familiar with. As they pass the statue, he thinks, we, too, should have leis. He will see if he can find some flowers before the ceremony starts.
When the official asks the team to pick a spot, Kiwina agrees with those who want a spot in the front, near the judges.
* As far as he's concerned, dwarves and gnomes are menehune. (Goblins, too, but I doubt he sees those.)

Rolth accommodates everyone's wishes regarding the tattoos, with assurances that the pain will not be bad. He has a deft touch and tells stories to distract the subject of his handiwork. He agrees with Gothruk that we should be near the front, the better for the judges to see our capabilities. We have enough taurpower to keep an eye around us at the same time once the action starts. Speaking of which, he suggests that the melee-focused Petals make a ring or box around the sharpshooter and wizard, since we do not know what will happen at the outset.
To Gothruk's reminder to avoid rudeness, he adds a caution about pointing at liontaurs. "Especially the fierce ones from the interior," he says with a tooth grin.

Replying to Gothruk "I agree the front position is idea. From the back I would not see the judges at all most likely."
As they move forward Falco will use prestidigitation to insure that each member of the team is immaculate for this presentation, adding a bit of a shine to each weapon that is visible as well.
Regarding the tattoo Falco would have requested that it be tattooed on the back of his right hand so it is visible when holding his weapon focus.
Rose Quest Opening Ceremony (Co-DM Cayzle) Monday May 8th, 2017 3:51:05 PM
Gothruk suggests, "I think we should choose a place near the front of the pavilion, that way we can get a better look at the judges, we'll grow to learn our opposition, but I don't think we'll see the judges up close as often.”
Kiwina, sporting a flower necklace of his own now, agrees. Rolth and Falco also shepherd the group to the front, near the pavilion.
[OOC: Falco, you rolled a 28 on the roller, but you did not say what the roll was for or what skill you were trying to use!]
There is some concern that the contest will begin, Hunger-Games-style, with a huge melee! If it does, Sable, Finnian, and Tsak will be ready, arranging the group for defense!
Allura does not seem as concerned with the possibility of immediate violence; she tunes her violin and ponders a performance.
Sable, looking around, notices a diverse crowd filling the stands. In the middle of the close-cropped grassy center of the stadium are a number of groups, each with eight questers. Half the groups consist of a single taur race. Most of the rest are mixed taur races with a sprinkling of other races. One group consists of mixed non-taur races. Everyone has their war-face on, ready to start.
The ceremony begins with a cavalcade! A troupe of liontaur windbaggers march into the stadium, blowing into their huge tanned whale stomachs and then squeezing out a lively melody from the bugle attached in back. A pair of centaur dancers (male and female) twirl and leap, moving with what must be magical speed here and there on the field. A pair of minotaur dance-fighters (also male and female) put on a mock combat to the cheers of the crowd.
Then an even greater magic happens! Twisty green vines sprout from the ground at the base of the pavilion, growing in seconds as a plant should grow in days! Soon the pavilion is engulfed in green, and then, rising 30 feet high, giant stems topped with huge roses bloom above the pavilion.
Then three taurs walk slowly in, a middle-aged liontaur geared as an adventurer, an old minotaur in simple working clothes, and an ancient centaur in holy vestments. Surely these are the judges! They mount the steps and stand before you on the pavilion. You hear murmurs and whispers from the group next to you.

Finnian watches the opening ceremonies in awe of the performances, particularly the centaur dancers. He had seen how lithe centaurs were in his travels but it never ceased to amaze him. And then the rose began to bloom. What a sight to see he thinks to himself as he speculatively watched it grow. "What nature, or magic is that?" He asked to no one in particular.

Rolth will take up the remaining corner, in the right rear. He is entranced by the spectacle and dancers, and beats a tattoo on the ground with the butt of his glaive in time to the music of the cavalcade. He stops when the judges mount the pavilion, both out of respect for the elders and to listen in on the murmurs from the adjoining group, hopes of learning something useful. Kiwina carries his longspear out of convenience, but is not expecting to fight. While the festivities are happening, he spends more time looking at the competitors and trying to assess their mood. Rolth decides to take up the remaining corner in the rear. The spectacle is entrancing and beats a tattoo on the ground till the judges appear. He listens to the crowd around him as they murmur about the judges. “Do you know who that is?” One taur whispers to another. “That is Gnym of Gnym, he lives on Minotaur Isle.” “Are you saying that is Gnym, the poet. The minotaur poet?” Replied the other. “I heard he never leaves the village named after him.”
Kiwina tries to assess the other competitors then watches as the judges appear.
Outside of the EightPetals, many of the competitors stand nervously waiting and talking amongst each other. “I hear, that they resurrected the topiary labyrinth.” “Are you serious,” replied a large barbarian. “I heard the last time they ran through the topiary it wasted half the competition.” “Yeah, I’m a bit worried because outside of the rumor about the labyrinth, I haven’t heard anything else.”
Gothruk watches and notes that climbing the rose, would be fun.
Tsak watches the three taurs intently while Allura tunes her violin, which is beautiful and attracts others to watch her.
Sable tries to listen in but is too distracted and waits for instructions.

---- “I am Artemis Blackwind.” A large liontaur, dressed to the nines in ceremonial garb, steps in front of the three judges. “I will be your master of ceremonies for the Taurnament of Roses events.” A cheer erupts from the crowd and Artemis waits till it dies down. “Three of our greatest minds have joined us today, all judges to watch over the taurnament and declare a winner. He introduces each of the sponsors by name: Hollyhocks, the elder centaur druid of Centaur Isle, and a most holy priest of Domi. Gnym of Gnym, the poet laureate of Minotaur Isle. Luomi-Juova, a Shining Dragon of the Dragon Consortium.
Each taur rises to speak, beginning with the eldest.
Hollyhocks says in a loud but wavering voice, We three dreamed of roses, of three gardens located in the Taur Islands, and of a rose bush that grows in each garden. Each rose bush is an eternal creature, immortal in its magical home. During one month every hundred years, the gardens open and roses may be picked. In our dreams, we heard a great voice speak from the sky over the gardens: “Send questing bands to find the roses three! And from each garden, let each band pick one. And from the questing day to questing’s end ... Allow but thirty settings of the sun.”
Gnym rises next to offer hints as to the locations of the gardens. I was inspired to write three verses, the old minotaur explains. Each one, my heart tells me, reveals the site of one garden, somewhere scattered among the Taur Islands. Here are those verses.
Verse the First Strands of treachery One coral bead is verdant -- First to greet the day.
Verse the Second Steadfast, strongly horned, The violet keep protects The dungeon garden.
Verse Three Where students study, Atop the tallest whistal, In library clouds.
After the poet is done versifying, young cubs speed among the questing bands to hand out scrolls on which the three verses are written.
Finally, Luomi-Juova stands up. He explains the details of the quest: We took counsel with several wise folk and decided we had to offer an incentive to you all. Therefore, any group that returns a single rose will earn a worthy reward of one Lesser Anything Potion for each in the band. Two roses earn one Lesser Anything Potion for each in the band and one Greater Anything Potion for the group. Three roses earn one Lesser AND one Greater Anything Potion for each in the band. And the first group that returns three roses will also win one Elixer of Domi for each in the group. After one month (20 days) from the Opening Ceremony, the gardens will close for another 100 years and disappear. No awards will be given to teams that return more than 30 days after the Opening Ceremony -- that’s today. We three judges will remain here at Chessford for 30 days from today. Also, each quester will receive 1 token (8 per group) -- present a token to a ship captain if you want a ride, or to other merchants and sellers in exchange for goods. They can come to us for compensation.
Artemis closes the ceremony by offering refreshments to the crowd and luck to every quester -- and by asking Hollyhocks to offer a prayer. The elder priest’s words ask The Great Protector to bless the gathering and all those who serve in his name on his quest. Then Artemis blows a horn to end the ceremony.

If Kiwina happens to be lucky enough to get a scroll, he will tuck it away to study later. He tries to get one without being rude about it. Certainly someone in the group will get one. He also makes sure the token he is given is secured.
Meanwhile, it's been an exciting morning, and Kiwina is as hungry as a centaur. He is also interested in the liontaur, Luomi-Juova, and will say hello if he can.

Rolth will suggest that the Petals move somewhere private to discuss the riddles contained in the verses, or if that is not feasible, to at least huddle up to avoid eavesdroppers. Once there, he will convey his thoughts thusly:
"I suspect that the first verse refers to Liontaur Island or somewhere nearby, given the legend that it was some liontaurs' treachery that led to the sundering of the taur races. The verdant coral bead could refer to a smaller isle or reef in a chain, covered in greenery." Rolth racks his brain to recall whether he sailed past such near Liontaur Island or the Shipwreck Shoals to its east, which would be first to greet the day. (Profession Sailor = 10)
"Of course, the mention of horns and Violet keep suggest that locale on Minotaur Island."
"As for the third, I recall that my centaur friends on Bridge Island would speak fondly of the majestic Whistal stands on Centaur Island, so perhaps that is a clue as well, although I have not seen them myself. Have any of you heard of a Scribners' University there?"
"Which shall we pursue first?"

Gothruk takes a moment to gather his thoughts. I agree with Rolth that we should move somewhere private, it wouldn't do to have others benefit from our insite, especially without giving any of their own. He says to the group. The obvious place to start would be to look for the garden of the island we are already on, however it may be better to go somewhere else first and hope that by the time we come back, the location of this islands garden is known by several people and so information on it would be less scarce if not as easy as meeting a bragging drunk. He whispers this to his companions, not keen to give away the strategy he had just thought up to another group.

Tsak also wracks his sailors memory for a particularly green 'bead' on Liontaur Isle or the nearby shoals (Profession, Sailor = 14). Personally I am leaning toward grabbing a ship to Minotaur Isle as that verse seems to be the easiest place to start, a dungeon near the violet keep shouldn't be too hard to find? Perhaps we should return to the Wanderers Roost for a discussion (and a beer). And once we know where we are going, we should finalize any gear purchases before we sail into that sunrise...

Once they are away Finnian adds his input. "I like the idea of heading to Minotaur Isle first. I've never been there and would love to see it. Though I do not relish the idea of getting back on a boat."
"That growing rose was some illusion," he adds and informs the group on what he learned, if anything from going near it

Doing his best not to blink or look away Falco retrieves a piece of parchment and pen and sketches his impressions of the magical rose before him. Is it a summoned construct? No it is an illusion of some sort it seems. Is there some message.
As the rose grows / unfurls Falco sketches as quickly as he can looking for a deeper meaning. Such a thing. If I learn nothing else I will inscribe the image on a blade when next I forge. Once the judges begin speaking he switches from sketching to note taking.
He speaks quietly, really to himself "Well here it is, the quest that begins us. If a riddle I will figure it out."
Responding to Finnian “I agree a fairly impressive illusion but still an illusion. I did a sketch as well as I could of what it looked like.”
Falco agrees that relocating to someplace private to discuss is in order. As the discussion goes on he listens for the most part, chipping in towards the end.
“Too my mind the closest garden is going to be packed at the beginning and the end of the competition as it is convenient now will be the closest to the finish at the end. I agree with the idea of putting the closest garden last and starting with the furthest. If we are short on time we at least won’t have to worry about travel in the end.”

“Greetings, quester,” the liontaur says to Kiwani. You note that he has none of the common “liontaur burr” accent. You may recall that he is not actually a native of the Taur Isles.
He even has some advice. Maybe it is the way he looks over your gear, or your youth, or the idealism of a new adventurer glinting in your eye, but he deduces that you are just starting out. “I will offer you some words of encouragement, young fellow. The race is not to the swift, nor to the powerful, nor even to the lucky, as the old verse goes, but it may well go to the clever, for even those less sharp of eye and mind may prevail where the mighty may fail.”
Rolth suggests they move away to somewhere private to discuss the riddles and adds, "I suspect that the first verse refers to Liontaur Island or somewhere nearby, given the legend that it was some liontaurs' treachery that led to the sundering of the taur races. The verdant coral bead could refer to a smaller isle or reef in a chain, covered in greenery." Rolth racks his brain to recall whether he sailed past such near Liontaur Island or the shoals to its east, which would be first to greet the day. (Profession Sailor = 10) Rolth Highlight to display spoiler: { You are aware that the treacherous Shipwreck Shoals are dotted with reefs and islets among the dangerous waters. }
If you make a Perception check vs DC12, then Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You note several other questers nearby listening to you ardently. One minotaur, tongue protruding from his mouth in concentration, is making notes.}
"Which shall we pursue first?" Gothruk takes a moment then adds, “I agree with Rolth that we should move somewhere private, it wouldn't do to have others benefit from our insite, especially without giving any of their own.” He says to the group. “The obvious place to start would be to look for the garden of the island we are already on, however it may be better to go somewhere else first and hope that by the time we come back, the location of this islands garden is known by several people and so information on it would be less scarce if not as easy as meeting a bragging drunk.” He whispers this to his companions, not keen to give away the strategy he had just thought up to another group. Sable wonders about the rose bushes. Sable Highlight to display spoiler: {His knowledge tells him that roses enjoy the sunlight. They would likely appear within a location that is warm and has a lot of sun. } Tsak wracks his sailor’s memory for a particularly green ‘bead’ on Liontaur Isle of the shoals and adds, “Personally I am leaning toward grabbing a ship to Minotaur Isle as that verse seems to be the easiest place to start, a dungeon near the violet keep shouldn't be too hard to find? Perhaps we should return to the Wanderers Roost for a discussion (and a beer). And once we know where we are going, we should finalize any gear purchases before we sail into that sunrise…” Tsak’s only Highlight to display spoiler: { Your memory is a bit clearer as you recall the shoals as Shipwreck Shoals -- and there are no shoals or reefs surrounding Liontaur Island. } Finnian is fascinated by the rose and attempts to interact with it. The illusion thins as you approach, it becomes less opaque. Seems to be more prominent as you stand farther away. Once the group has seperated he says, “I like the idea of heading to Minotaur Isle first. I've never been there and would love to see it. Though I do not relish the idea of getting back on a boat."
"That growing rose was some illusion,"
Falco tries not to blink. He retrieves the parchment as they are given away, by a cub that is in quite a hurry to pass them out. Curious why Falco is just staring forward without blinking. Falco wonders about its construction and then sketches it. He then speaks to himself, "Well here it is, the quest that begins us. If a riddle I will figure it out." Responds to Finnian “I agree a fairly impressive illusion but still an illusion. I did a sketch as well as I could of what it looked like.” Then adds, “Too my mind the closest garden is going to be packed at the beginning and the end of the competition as it is convenient now will be the closest to the finish at the end. I agree with the idea of putting the closest garden last and starting with the furthest. If we are short on time we at least won’t have to worry about travel in the end.” --- Outside of your group the other group huddle close together and try to hammer out a strategy. Other groups try to negotiate the crowd to find somewhere to sit, many have found the beer tent in the center of the field and talk there. Perception vs 9 Highlight to display spoiler: { The entertainers from the beginning of the ceremony are everywhere, performing and mixing. The crowd has come down from the stands. You see an old grandmother liontaur talking to one quester group, but they do not seem to be giving her the time of day. } Perception vs 12 Highlight to display spoiler: { You catch a glimpse of Clayfus and his merry group of liontaurs looking over at you. The entire group sports purple sashes over their right shoulder. }
Perception vs 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { You see a slew of booths and carts set up towards the entrance, which is of course also the exit. They have a carnival feel, and people seem to be buying things there. } Perception vs 17 Highlight to display spoiler: { Others, off in the distance, seem to be heading out. You see the master of ceremonies at the gate handing something out to the questers as they leave. Maybe to start right away. } -- Time of Day: The sun stares down at you from its noon-time position.

Rolth looks around after mentioning the University, to see if there is any reaction to his question. (Perception = 21 vs DC 12 to reveal the spoiler) Noticing an eavesdropping minotar, he fixes the taur with a menacing glare, casts a mocking roar at the bullman, and calls out, "My, what large ears you have, the better to spy on us, you weaselly ferret. At first I mistook those gargantuan appendages for the horns of an honorable minotaur." Turning back to the party, he continues in a loud voice, "As I was saying, we must find the Singers' University, perhaps that is some Bardic college." (Bluff check = 22 to trick eavesdroppers into thinking that they misheard his first comment re the Scribners' University.) Then in a lower voice to the Petals, he reiterates that they should hold their conversation until out of earshot of other competitors.
(Perception = 22 to reveal the final spoilers, man my dice are on fire tonight!)
Once safely away from prying eyes and ears, Rolth agrees to starting with Minotaur Isle, which is about the same distance away as Centaur Isle. "On the return trip, we can check out the reefs in the Shipwreck Isles." He notes that it might be possible to prevail upon his Trading Clan to supply their fastest ship and captain, in order that they might share in the glory of winning.
"On our way out, maybe we should talk to that kindly looking old liontaur lady over there, who might even be old enough to remember the last Taurament and could share her wisdom with us. Clayfus and company over that way seem boisterous and bullying, let's give them a wide berth. Let's also make sure to check out those booths by the entrance to see if they have anything useful for sale, and pick up whatever the Master of Ceremonies is distributing at the exit."

In all sincerity, Kiwina tells the Shining Dragon what an honor it is to meet him, and thanks him for his advice. He also asks, "Can we return more than once? That is, if we return with a rose and go to find another, will we receive credit for what is here by the 30th day?" Kiwina asks this openly, knowing some competitors will hear the answer but trusting that it won't spread far.
Once he has received a response, Kiwina thanks the liotaur once again and moves aside. He joins the rest of the Eight Petals to discuss their strategy.

" Excuse me miss," he says with a slight bow "I couldn't help but noticing that your wisdom was falling on deaf ears, perhaps you would rather bestow it on someone more appreciative."

Rose Quest Opening Ceremony (Co-DM Cayzle) Thursday May 11th, 2017 8:31:18 PM [OOC: Most DM posts will not be this content dense, my friends. There is a lot to digest in today’s post, as in other posts this week. DO NOT feel that you have to choose just one path or rush off. We won’t be leaving the Opening Ceremony until everyone is all set, and there is no penalty for checking things out here!]
Rolth looks around after mentioning Scribner University to see if there is any reaction to his question. He notices the eavesdropping taur. "My, what large ears you have, the better to spy on us, you weaselly ferret. At first I mistook those gargantuan appendages for the horns of an honorable minotaur." Turning back to the party, he continues in a loud voice, "As I was saying, we must find the Singers' University, perhaps that is some Bardic college." “A minotaur!” Clafys replied loudly. “Do I look like a minotaur!” With that he ruffled the blondish hair and growled revealing large, sharp teeth. “Those are fightin’ words new-comers. I hope you can follow that up with some skills.” With that Clafys directs his band of liontaurs to the beer tent. (Clafys: Sense Motive: fail)
Rowlth, checking out the booths, finds several canny liontaur merchants have set up stands with adventuring gear and are looking to give questers good reasons to part with their tokens. There are even some scrolls and potions available. Each token is basically worth 100 gp in goods or one trip anywhere in the Taur Isles. One loud merchant is selling tanglefoot bags, and only tanglefoot bags. “Get them while their sticky! Tanglefoot bags! Every hero’s friend! Going fast! Two for a token! Tanglefoot bags!”
There are other booths set up here for the Mailed Fist, the WLA, the Star Mages, and the Sages Guild, all looking for recruits. [OOC: Several of you have asked earlier about joining Woldian Organizations. HERE is your chance. Click on the links for more info, and approach your chosen booth in character!]
Gothruk tries to take everything in but he is too excited. He waits for Kiwina to return while avoiding Clayfs’s group. He collects eight tokens from master of Ceremonies Artemis BlackWind, who smiles and reminds him to keep some for booking passage around the Isles.
Sable tries to find a place to get together and has a range of obvious choices. The bleachers are mostly empty as spectators wander the meadow. The beer tent is so loud that you could probably shout your plans out loud -- and it would be impossible to be heard five feet away. And honestly, if you just huddled up and spoke quietly, it would be pretty private, for that matter.
Tsak, accustomed to the peace of shipboard life feels the crows is playing with his sensibilities. “Perhaps if we head straight to the docks we can get a ship to Minotaur Isle today? We can talk on the ship and resupply at Imod city before making our way to Castle Violet.” And in fact, some groups do seem to be rushing off. But those groups will certainly miss all that there is to learn here.
Kiwina speaks to Luomi-Juova and asks several questions. “That’s a very good question,” Luomi-Juova says loudly. “Can you return more than once with a rose?” The Shining Dragon smiles broadly. “I suppose that would be fine, so long as you are here and present in this field for the closing ceremony 30 days hence. But if you think about it, my friend, you will see that unless you have access to teleportation magic, the issue may well be moot. To travel around the Taur Isles and then to return here within 30 days is not a trivial task. The distances and sailing times are such that to complete a single circuit, gather three roses, and return here in 30 days is a challenge in itself. Be careful, young taur, that you do not take a ship that is too slow!”
Falco addresses Rolth “Rolth, I agree we should try and speak with the older liontaur and check the booths. I suppose we will need to travel with food and what not. I am unclear on how these tokens work but some additional provisions would be welcome.” "Tsak, I agree about heading out today but we should check the vendors first."
Finnian notices only the older liontaur woman too. He and Falco go over to chat with her. He seems to have a natural way with her, as it turns out. He says to the elderly lady, " Excuse me miss," he says with a slight bow "I couldn't help but noticing that your wisdom was falling on deaf ears, perhaps you would rather bestow it on someone more appreciative." The elder liontaur smiles at Finnian and says, “Ahh ... to be young and flirtacious.” Her tail swishes back and forth and she waves one of the scrolls with the minotaur poet’s verses. “I’m too old to go a-questing, meself,” she says. “But I like a good puzzle, and I think I got me an answerr orr two.” From her accent, you can tell she hails from the outback, not in Chessford. “You young whipperrsnapperrs want to make it worrth an old taurr’s while, and I’ll tell you the answer to one of them rriddlements! Two other grroups werre too snooty to give an old lady the time of day, but maybe you are differrent.”

Kiwina (Steve M) (16/16 HP | AC:14; Touch:11; Flat:12; CMD:15) | Status: None Friday May 12th, 2017 10:56:49 AM
Kiwina grabs some food and finds a relatively unoccupied space in the open to be along with his thoughts. While he feasts, Kiwina ponders the information they have gathered in order to figure out what questions still need answers. The aumakua are guiding these contests. That is good. Although the dreams they send are rarely so detailed.
Single roses are of value, not just sets of three. Why are the roses valuable? Is it just as a rare prize, or do they have some purpose? Someone versed in magical arts may know.
Each bush is an eternal creature . . . Is she just being poetic, or will there be beasts from whom the roses must be won? Kiwina does not want to fight an immortal beast. He assumes that the roses may be won without fighting.
Luomi-Juova does not believe a garden is on Liontaur Isle. Does he know where they are, or is this just an impression he has? Either way, Kiwina trusts it.
Prizes are awarded at the closing ceremony, not right away to any who are back early. The party might need to beware of treachery from other teams near the end. What would be the safest way to store a rose? What safeguards do the judges have to ensure that the roses are brought by the teams that actually enter the gardens?
How big is a magical rose? The party is going to have to make some assumptions before buying chests or other containers and locks.
Strands of treachery could refer to a shore or beach, or to a rope or necklace, or even to a famous abandonment. The shore seems most likely – the Shipwreck Shoals seem obvious, but possibly there is a dangerous spot on one of the islands. Would there be a local legend about a rope, necklace, or abandonment?
How likely is it that ships for hire would brave the Shipwreck Shoals? Are there boats here like those back home, that are designed for shoal waters? How much do they cost?
Do seasonal winds give an advantage to tackling the islands in a certain order, even if only a day’s worth? (Dice roll: sailor profession, possibly augmented by knowledge of nature and geography to know whether a clockwise or counterclockwise route should be taken at this time of year)
Horned might mean having horns, and probably refers to minotaurs. Or it might refer to the shape of a castle. Kiwina can’t imagine a crescent castle, but perhaps one with tall towers that look like horns?
The centaurs here live in whistal trees. Kiwina shivers at the unnatural feeling that gives him.
The race is not to the swift, nor to the powerful, nor even to the lucky, but it may well go to the clever. Preparation may be key, then. Even those less sharp of eye and mind may prevail where the mighty may fail. To Kiwina, this sounds like luck, but the liontaur called it cleverness. But the contest really is a race, and obtaining the roses should not depend on combat.
Best to start today, but not until after the team’s questions are answered – some clues can be worked out during time at sea.

He'd prefer common coin to a token and looks around for a stall that has the coin to exchange one. (Perception 1D20+5=15) if he finds a suitable stall then he'll attempt to negotiate the token for 8 platinum and 15 gold. (Diplomacy 1d20-3=17 (ooc, good time to roll high I guess))
Rose Quest Opening Ceremony (Co-DM Cayzle) Friday May 12th, 2017 5:13:58 PM
Gothruk distributes a wooden token to each member of his group, and then seeks to exchange his for coin. No merchant is willing to simply give him the pure 100 gp value. "If I were to buy a bow for 70 gold and sell it for 100, I have made an honest wage for my time and work," says one liontaur, as he "taursplains" himself. "I would not give you more than 80 gold for that token." But Gothruk persists, and uses his negotiatong skills, finds a vendor who will trade him 95 gp in coinage for the wooden token.
Rolth is intrigued by the Old Woldian symbol of the WLA and follows that up with thoughts of joining the organization. "I am an adventurer, and this seems the place to become one, to be counted among the heroes of all that is good. Do I speak rightly?" On the other side of the table is a official looking centaur. The WLA badge is placed prominently on his dark vest. “Mr. Adventurer, we are always looking for young Woldians to join. You have a good stature and the right words -- and might be a fine member,” the centaur begins. “But it is more than the ability to stand up straight that matters. We in the League are a lighthouse of good in the Wold. We protect the weak, and we have a reputation we maintain. We offer the best training in the Wold, but only to those who swear to abide by our ideals. Will you put yourself on the line for those weaker than you? Will you respond to the call when the noble peoples and nations of the Wold cry out for help? Will you swear your devotion and honor to our lofty purpose?”
At the same time, Sable approaches the Mailed Fist booth, waits his turn, then says, "I would like to present myself for consideration as a specialist -- focused on tracking, bounty hunting, and tactical assaults involving two handed weapons and large bows." “Certainly,” said a ranger, standing in his sharpest uniform. He hears the centaur over at the WLA table talking to Rolth next door, and rolls his eyes. “If you would like to join the Wold’s most disciplined fighting team, sign here.” The warrior places a gloved hand upon a form on the table in front. “Please follow this with an oath: ‘I swear to Serve the Fist, Live for the Fist, Die for the Fist!’ "
Finnian tells the eldertaur, "I was under the impression that you were offering information, not selling it." He jumps a bit after noticing Falco "I do of course value your wisdom" He continues to the woman "What is your price?" Falco joins the chat with the elderly ladytaur. “Grandmother, I will happily give what I can for any aid someone of your wisdom has. I do have a question first, your name? It seem rude to seek your aid without asking now doesn’t it? I have little gold, having been removed from my father’s house at a young age, but I will do what I can.” “You arre young ... No gold is expected, but, not a bad thing. Young wizarrd … can you grrant Grranny Esoway a wish?” She chuckles a bit. “No... no... that is farr too much forr a youngling. I tell you what ... I will grrant you one clue for an Anything Potion. Well, forr the promise of one, in 30 days!” She laughs with a bit of a cackle. “None of these vendorrs have an Anything Potion. You did hearr that the rrose-brringerrs will win an Anything Potion? And I’ll prromise not to tell my answerr to any otherr grroup, seeing as you two arre so cute.” She gives Falco’s cheek a pinch and declares to the halfling, “You little ones arre just like little dollies! Cutie-pie!!”
Tsak takes a breath and takes a closer look at the booths, wondering if a backpack would serve him well. There are vendors was all sorts of goods, and with a reasonably sharp eye you can see many. There are a range of packs available, even the oddly shaped ones that are used by liontaurs and centaurs, that look more like saddlebags, though most quadrupedal taurs would take quick offense if you called them that. Tsak sees one especially beautiful pack, shaped out of the fur and leather of a hell hound. “The hide is very rare, but amazingly strong,” the merchant tells Tsak. “Guaranteed to protect your gear better than any other nonmagical pack. It is yours for a wooden token,” he offers.
Kiwina grabs some food and finds an unoccupied location for his thoughts. He ponders many questions but keeps those questions to himself … Maybe the answers he seeks are right here among the revelers and experts on the Spikeball field, but if he does not ask anyone, they will remain mysterious. NO WAIT! Actually, one set of answers comes with a moment’s thought. The centaur has already sailed the Taur Islands, and he has a good idea of the travel times involved ...
To generalize a bit, there are fast courier ships and slow merchant ships. To generalize further, it can take a day or two to sail around the islands to a particular port. Nonetheless:
SLOW SHIP: Liontaur Island to Centaur Island: 13 days Liontaur Island to Minotaur Island: 15 days Centaur Island to Minotaur Island: 6 days
FAST SHIP: Liontaur Island to Centaur Island: 8-9 days Liontaur Island to Minotaur Island: 10 days Centaur Island to Minotaur Island: 4 days
Kiwina bases this on the common practice of running the ship 24/7 on three shifts. Even so, on a slow ship, the 1700-1750 mi round trip will take about 35 days, and the contest is lost! With a fast ship, with the right winds and currents, you can cut that total transit time to maybe 24 days. But even in the best case, that leaves just SIX-to-EIGHT DAYS (6-8 non-travel days, that is) to do the quest! The exact length depends on route and ship type. Each leg that a slow ship sails uses up precious days. It will not much matter whether you run the circuit spinwise or anti-spinwise; a good captain can manage the seas.
Kiwina, please accept a 100 xp cleverness award for (a) realizing that “Luomi-Juova does not believe a garden is on Liontaur Isle,” as well as for (b) realizing that a Profession Sailor check was needed to learn the crucial info above -- and, sweetly, for rolling a 26 to beat the required DC25)!
An argument breaks out near the beer tent. From your vantage point you can see that it’s a shoving match between taurs. Perception vs DC 12 Highlight to display spoiler: { With a bit of a better view you can see it’s a fight between a group of liontaurs and centaurs.} Perception vs DC 17 Highlight to display spoiler: { An even closer look, gives you a clue that Clayfs is involved and a dispute has erupted with a group of centaurs. You would have to find a way through the large crowd to get a better position to see what’s going on } Laughter erupts from opposite direction as a minotaur, two humans and a dwarf stand outside a pub. They wear large brimmed hats, decorated with feathers and gold. There teeth missing in several places, noticeable when they laugh. Above their heads is boat shaped sign with “Wrecked” spelled out in red. The minotaur is standing in front of the other sailors and telling a story or joke. Responding to the WLA centaur, Rolth heartily swears, "I will put myself on the line for those weaker than me, as I have when fighting off the hellhounds of this isle. I will respond to the call when the noble peoples and nations of the Wold cry out for help, as when I defended the ships of my clan and their passengers from all sorts of nemeseseses. I do swear my devotion and honor to what is now OUR lofty purpose. And as a token of my good faith, I shall mark my own flesh to signify this oath." Should the centaur accept this oath, Rolth will carefully mark the initial outline of the WLA symbol on his own chest, over his heart and next to his Eight Petal compass rose, to be elaborated upon later. He will also accept the more traditional badge if offered.
After rejoining the Petals, Rolth triple checks this time to make sure that there are no eavesdroppers, since his previous precautions were for naught. He then congratulates Kiwina for the clever surmises. "I agree that the third location is likely to be on the Shipwreck Shoals rather than Liontaur Island itself. And I repeat my suggestion that we seek a fast ship, so as to meet the schedule you have so cleverly laid out. Perhaps from my trading clan, who can be trusted, or from those Wrecked fellows over there, if I can just remember their reputation." (Profession Sailor = 12)
At that, his attention is drawn to the shoving match, which he dismisses with the comment, "Ah ,see, I told you that Clayfus fellow would be trouble. Good thing we steered clear." (Perception = 25)

Sable, more focused on the oath, misses the exchange at the beer tent (Perception = 9). After quickly reviewing the contract to make sure that it aligns with his ethos - he signs and then repeats, ‘I swear to Serve the Fist, Live for the Fist, Die for the Fist!’ .
Sable blurts out, "At some point, I would love to be able to find a large composite bow that can accommodate my strength -- all I have is this token and a handful of gold. I am sure it is not yet enough for such a valuable item and I suspect I will need the token to get me to the first challenge in the Taurnement. I would, however, be greatful for any advice on how to proceed and guidance to Fist locations on the Taur Islands." (Rolls Diplomacy 1)
"Finally, If there is any duty I can perform while I am traveling - please let me know so that I can begin to earn my keep and bring honor to the Fist."

Tsak misses the start of the disagreement (Perception=11) from his location at the stall a little further off, but upon noticing it (Perception=23) see's that Clayfus is involved and dismisses it as unimportant. He is not at all tempted to spend 100 GP on a backpack, no matter how tough it is (Perception to check truth of merchants' claim=24), and continues to look for something in the 2-5 GP price range.

His small repast complete, Kiwina returns to the others, but along the way he asks the officials he is able to find whether they know the answers to several of his questions: 1. "Does the contest have safeguards in place to ensure that the roses are brought back by the teams that actually enter the gardens?" 2. "How big is a magical rose?" 3. "Do the sailors of Centaur and Minotaur islands ever use catamarans?" If the official does not understand the question, Kiwina explains with a sketch of two canoe-like hulls underneath a platform.
When he reaches him, Kiwina asks Falco, "Why are the roses valuable?"
At the first opportunity to do so that affords the group some privacy, Kiwina explains his thoughts to as many of the others as he has found. In particular, the group needs a decent guess as to which islands the gardens are on in order to plan a route that will not require back-tracking.

Hmm. . . In his eagerness to explain his thoughts, Kiwina may have been distracted.

A fight begins to break out over by the beer tent, and although it is far off Finnians keen eyes see that Clayfs is involved. Rolth triple checks for peepers -- He agrees with Kiwina’s thoughts and recommends the fast ship and a conversation with the sailors near the Wrecked pub.
Sable focuses on the oath for the Mailed Fist, missed the exchange at the beer tent. He swears his oath, the warrior replies, “You will make a fine member of the Fist.” Sable adds, "At some point, I would love to be able to find a large composite bow that can accommodate my strength -- all I have is this token and a handful of gold. I am sure it is not yet enough for such a valuable item and I suspect I will need the token to get me to the first challenge in the Taurnament. I would, however, be greatful for any advice on how to proceed and guidance to Fist locations on the Taur Islands." but the warrior becomes distracted by another potential member. A, minotaur, that takes up both the Mailed Fist and WLA table. “Hey, are you trying to blot out the sun,” shouts a small human walking by. “True Steel for Honest Coin,” said the warrior pointedly. “Remember future Trooper,” he adds. “Membership in the Fist isn’t free; there is a cost but that is a future concern to you. Come back after the taurnament. Talk to me. During the taurnament keep a careful eye on the world around you.” Sable, having made your oath, you are now a member of the Mailed Fist. Please so note it on your PC sheet and also note that you have to start paying dues at level 2.
Tsak missed the beginning of the disagreement, then sees that Clayfus is involved and dismisses it as unimportant. He does not spend the token on the backpack, checks the merchants claim, and feels that he could certainly negotiate a steep discount off the merchant’s initial price. He is a bit hungry and searches for something to eat. He finds that there are a meat, popover, and roasted tater vendors all over the Spikeball field. Those strips of flamed meat hanging from the top of one vendor’s cart are especially yummy smelling. The vendor offers to give Tsak a helping for free, but he wants to see your wooden token and make a scratch on it. He wants to scratch it so that you can’t keep coming back for seconds! “I like you questers, but you adventurer types have bottomless stomachs!”
Tsak also overhears some questers talking ... “Did you see something in the magic roses when that poet was saying his poems? I could have sworn I saw a vision or something ...”
Kiwina seeks out some official answers to questions he has about the quest, and eventually finds the master of ceremonies, Artemis, who is willing to satisfy his curiosity. "Does the contest have safeguards in place to ensure that the roses are brought back by the teams that actually enter the gardens?" Artemis shrugs. “Huh, I have not thought about that. I’ll ask the judges, and I suppose they’ll have an answer one way or the other by the time it matters.” He is similarly unfamiliar with either the size of the roses you seek or the uncouth double canoes Kiwina describes.
Gothruk also notices the fight but is too distracted. He is looking for a knife but is struggling with the crowd in front of him. Surely, there is a weapons vendor nearby. Maybe, on the other side of that huge minotaur. Possibly, someone nearby can offer some information but Gothruk does notice the meat vendor, his meat hanging over salt, pepper and spices. Oh, and look, a weapon merchant is over there past the meat cart, next to the fellow hawking tanglefoot bags.
Falco blushes and Granny Esoway smiles when he agrees to give up the Anything potion.
Finnian wonders about Falco’s choice to trade the future potion for a hint now. "So my friend here has generously promised to provide you with a potion, should we return with a rose. What is this sage advice that you can give us."
The elder taur scowls at Finnian and says, “Oh my.. Oh my.. You will not be sorry!” -- She bends over and whispers in the halfling’s ear ... Then Finnian asks a question about Clayfs. “He’s a young taur, looking to make his name.” Granny adds. “He is a little big for his hair-covered britches. That’s my opinion on the matter.”
Looking for a Star Mage guild table Falco finds -- a human dressed in magically clean and fancy robes. He is enthusiastic and impassioned. “You know,” he says, “the old guard in the Star Mages is all about learning more -- for themselves! They don’t give back to the community. And they are all pretty stuck up. Think they’re better than anyone else, you know? But a bunch of us younger types are looking for mages who want to make a better name for ourselves. Sure, you got your heroes and your soldiers” -- he looks over at the WLA and the Mailed Fist tables -- “but who is making friends for the mages? Who is setting kids the right example of what a mage should be The more we do to earn the respect of the people, the better off we all will be.” “So, whatcha think?”

"Well, friends, what have we learned?" After hearing their answers, he continues, "I have been thinking more on what good Kiwina said about the time and distances involved. The journey itself will have four legs. It is possible that we could charter one ship for the whole quest, but even so, that would probably cost several of our tokens. We are going to need substantial provisions to last the month, so perhaps we could use one of our tokens for that, if it wouldn't be included in our fare." [ooc: Well darn it, I posted last night just before bed and it appears to not have gone up.]
Seeing Finniam wince when he offered up the potion Falco is a little surprised. A clue from Granny Esoway may, or may not, help them win but seems worth the risk. As Granny Esoway speaks Falco jots down what she said on the back of his sketch of the plant illusion and then neatly folds it up for safe keeping.
“Granny Esoway, I knew it would be worth it and I am right. I most likely would not have come to that on my own. You will have your potion and I will remember you as I grow in abilities. Now please excuse me I need to speak with the Star Mages representative. I may not always like some of the members but, like you, they have great knowledge.”
Once things are settled with Granny Falco heads to the tent to speak with the human representative. On his way over he makes sure his outfit is spotless to put on the best impression. He listens to the young mans opening remarks and smiles.
“Well that is a fine pitch and idea. I have been studying magic for some time and know that the Star Mage Guild has great stores of knowledge. I would seek to join and I know some of the restrictions on behavior. It will be a little difficult as I like to help but my desire for knowledge is great.
Plus, I am sure that the Star Mage Guild would like to have a member of the winning team as part of the guild so I am hoping we can come to an arrangement. I have little gold but I do have the token which would cover membership and then some. Is there a deal to be made?”
Clearly Falco is looking for change and any other advantage he can get in the competition.

What is it about this halfling that makes him easy to talk with Finnian ponders to himself as they part ways.
As he makes his way to the different factions he sees the Mailed Fist, I am certainly no mercenary he continues a bit further and notices the emblem of the WLA. He has seen the insignia but never actually talked woth anyone wearing it.

Allura only Highlight to display spoiler: {You hear others discuss techniques for approaching the shoals. “I’m telling you. Why are they doing this?” The liontaur sighs and begins talking more softly to others in his group. } There are sailors everywhere, many talking to other competitors. A few stand alone.
Kiwina says, "I do not favor it, but we should also consider whether it would be to our advantage to divide into two groups. For the first garden, I think not. And, unsatisfied with the response he received from Artemis, Kiwina also adds, "We may be able to do some work to lower the cost of passage."
Tsak Rezar takes a sample of the meat and allows the merchant to scratch his token. Tsak then wanders back to the supplies vendor to negotiate on the backpack. “This is a masterwork backpack,” the vendor argues. “It’s got numerous pockets, hooks and bands across the chest and waist. This is the best pack for the money. Made of Hellhound Hide, it is impervious to fire, and with the sealings tied off, water can’t get in either.” After some back and forth, the merchant is offering to take your token and your leather armor, and giving you the backpack, a set of studded leather armor, and 50 gold change. That’s his final offer. “You want a quality pack. Not common one, so you come to me.” he says.
[OOC: We’ve bifurcated time a smidge as Falco finishes his conversation with Granny Esoay at the same time we are roleplaying his meeting with the Star Mages. Well, it wirks that way sometimes in Play By Post! But let us finish with Granny and move on to the Star Mages.]
Falco takes a note of Granny’s secret and adds, "Granny Esoway, I knew it would be worth it and I am right. I most likely would not have come to that on my own. You will have your potion and I will remember you as I grow in abilities. Now please excuse me I need to speak with the Star Mages representative.”
A second mage, a half-elf, has joined the human in fancy robes who has been talking with Falco. The newly arrived mage stands uncomfortably behind the table as he listens to the first one. “We shouldn’t be saying these things here, Clyde,” says the half-elf with darkish hair. “We endanger our studying in the Library with this kind of talk.” “Settle down, Coyle. Sarah said we needed to recruit some new blood, maybe some idealists. We could find some gems.” The half-elf mage introduces himself, Coyle, and Clyde and explains that the Star Mages do not usually step out of the shadows but the opportunity was so great. He explains that the guild does not condone any evil deeds but does not pry. It does not concern itself with any religion or diety. “Are you an arcane caster?” Coyle snaps. “I want to see something special.” “Ignore him,” Clyde replies. “Entry into the The Star Mages Guild requires a 25 gp cost. Can you afford that? And you have to swear to keep our secrets.”
Finnian gets his nerve together and approaches the WLA. "I am Finnian, I am a bower by trade, an archer by necessity, and an adventurer out of curiosity. I am looking to be part of something greater, that is why I have come for the rose ceremony. I would like to bring victory not only to myself and my group but to the WLA. If you will have me of course" he adds the last part meekly. The same centaur who recruited Rolth greets Finnian kindly and explains in the same way that the ideals of the Woldian League of Adventurers are to protect the weak, answer the call to help others, and to be heroes in all the noble meanings of the word. He says, “So if you are still interested, speak this oath: “I, Finnian, do solemnly swear to uphold the ideals of the League, to protect the innocent and combat evil wherever I may find it.” Does Finnian take the oath?
Gothruk finds a reasonable assortment of weapons at decent prices. Nothing especially remarkable, though. [OOC: you can buy anything in the core gear list at standard prices.]
Sable rejoins the group after signing on with the Mailed Fist. Pretty soon, he realizes as the sun begins to set, you will have to decide whether to try to depart today or wait for tomorrow. In the absence of information about ships that are available for passage, it is hard to say.
[OOC: Please friends, let’s try to wrap up all the activities here at the Spikeball Field, if you are done (no rush). I only mention it because both Rolth and Allura seem to be thinking of heading harborside.]

In negotiations, her goal will be to get the entire party passage and board for all the legs of the trip on a single ship, if possible. She will try to make a deal for as few chits as possible. To sweeten the deal, she will promise in her dulcet, sing-song voice to compose a special song just for the ship and crew, to glamorize and dramatize their contribution to the quest's success. Tsak pleads with the merchant for time to talk with his friends, as, whilst a fire and water proof receptacle could be very useful for transporting important roses, he is unsure if it is wise to use up so much of their working capital at the start of the journey. Also the studded armour is actually of little interest to him as it would have a negative effect on his swimming, climbing and general creeping around. Aware that they need to get moving and time is short he hurries back to the group to explain his predicament and gain their input into the issue of "Tsak's Pak"

Falco lights up as the two mages speak to him Now this is the type of opportunity I am looking for lets see what I can do with this.
“ Yes, yes I am an arcane caster and I think I can show you something special.” he draws his bright green dagger, made with his families techniques “This blade, I made it by hand but that is not so special is it? It is this dragon on the blade, an etching of great detailed and shallower then any you have seen I would bet. This was done combining skill with a simple spell a novice could learn but only the most creative could use in this way. I am sure you can conjure simple acid but could you do this? I will keep your secrets but you want me in the fold.”
Falco pauses for drama and draws himself to his full, diminutive, height and fixes the two with his best salesmen’s gaze as he shows the token.
“I am going to make magic weapons that will shape the world. I will give you this token for membership and you will give me 75 gold pieces…. Or you can be the two handsom men that missed the opportunity to be the men behind my blades.”
I hope I didn’t overplay my hand but that felt right. If they hate it, well, they hate it I guess.
[ooc: if you want a roll let me know but I am hoping the RP will stand on its own. If you want would I would lobby for Craft: Blacksmith in an IRL game as my proof of skill beyond the representatives ability is based on that.]
Once this exchange is completed, if to his satisfaction, Falco will gladly head to the harborside with a spring in his step anxious to share what he has learned. Once with the others he speaks with great, possibly annoying, exuberance.
"I have made a deal for information, well two deals but the second is unimportant to you all and the details are mine but... I have spoken with a wonderful grandmother with great knowledge. Rose Quest Opening Ceremony (Co-DM Cayzle) Wednesday May 17th, 2017 7:35:56 PM
Rolth Niheow suggests they use their knowledge of sailing to seek out a crew, and Allura can be the party face to book the passage. He also votes for the group to stay together.
Allura accepts the suggestion and searches for a ship.
Kiwina goes back the WLA to ask about multiple organizations. The WLA official looks at Kiwina with bewilderment then says, “I’m not aware of the Honu Wayfinder's Guild. You will have to tell me more about that sometime later. I do not see an issue, as long as it doesn’t interfere with your duties under the WLA.”
Sable offers to help select ship and crew for passage. He checks the weather. The sky is blue and there is no cloud in site. Nothing ominous. There are quite a few taurs and a collection of them standing near the Wrecked pub. They look willing to talk and do. It is clear that most of the competing groups are more experienced than the Eight-Petaled Rose. One of the competing groups, with a centaur, a minotaur, and several humans and half-orcs, is not taking the challenge of the Rose Quest too seriously. They are bragging that they will be the first to come back with three roses. “You poor saps,” says the experienced centaur to Clafys’s all-liontaur group, “while you’re paddling your way around the Middle Seas, we’ll be teleporting back here toot sweet!” She laughs.
Tsak Rezar pleads with the merchant for time to talk to his friends. He decides using up his token is unwise, this early in the taurnament. He returns to the others.

That is amazing.” Coyle returns a snide comment, which is promptly ignored. “I am going to make magic weapons that will shape the world. Falco only to hear the conversation Perception vs 17 Highlight to display spoiler: { “He has little diplomacy Clyde. I don’t think this is a good idea.” “It’s not up to you Coyle. Coyle, also welcomes you in his own way. “Please confirm that you agree to the Ethos and Responsibilities in this scroll.” With that Clyde hands over the scroll.
Falco returns to the others with news: "I have made a deal for information, well two deals but the second is unimportant to you all and the details are mine but... Gothruk buys a dagger, which the merchant offers to him, with a smile. The merchant with the spices sits behind you and is happy to accept your spice purchase.

The group leaves the Spikeball Field and heads down to the wharves to searche for a captain that fits the bill. They come across older dwarf sailor with crusty chunks of food entwined in a long beard. He smells of the sea, whether hygiene or just because it bleeds from him. The captain stops a conversation with a couple other surely sailors and smiles. “I, you looking for a fast ship? I got a fast ship. The Dahlia rode the fabled “Group of Two” to get here from Minotaur Isle back in the day. She made the trip in nine days, with the wind at her back… of course everyday is a different day on the seas. It’s a little old but it’s study as anything else in this race.” “Are you telling stories again, Crusty?” Shouted the minotaur from in front of the Wrecked pub. “There are no ships, especially not old Dahlia that can make the trip from Minotaur Isle to hear in nine days.” “Ha!” retorted the old dwarf. “Garrat Steadyrunner is going to tell me my baby can’t run it in nine days? That’s precious coming from someone that crashed into the shoals.” Garrat’s eyes flashed, “That was years ago and it was in a storm.. I hate’s that shoal. Had to swim to shore till my mates rescued me. That shoal is not what it looks like.. I tell you that. Plus, I have a new ship. The Gallion is the fastest ship in the fleet.” “Ha…” The two men continued to argue… A third sailor, a half elf with a scar scratched across have it’s face stood, quietly and watched. As you listen to the men argue you really get a feeling that they are passionate about sailing. That’s a good thing. Their ships are docked outside the city and you really can’t get a good look at them from here.

Matthew S. Co-DM - Day 01 - Pre-Dusk d20=20 ; d20=17 ; d20=17 ; Thursday May 18th, 2017 9:05:20 PM
The sun settles just above the horizon as you follow the conversation with the captains to the docks. --- Rolth Niheow has heard of these fellows, as soon as you think the story of the “Group of Two” comes up. “There was a fierce storm blowing over Shipwreck Shoals the last day of a similar quest a hundred years ago. The Dahlia and her crew contained the remaining two competitors of team Legion, Alexander Icemace and Skar Marblehorn. The others were killed by the beast within Minotaur Isle. The story went on to explain that the Dahlia held straight as it scraped along the coral beneath the shoal. The wind beating its starboard side. The Atheleney, a rival team sailed around the other side of the Isle, missing the storm barely but it was slower going. It has been told that Garret Steadyrunner’s father was the captain at the time.”
Rolth moves a bit closer to the captain of the Dahlia but the captain steps aside. He looks to the well appointed group behind you when the minotaur says, “Excuse me,” and the dwarf captain recognizes the minotaur. Gothruk answers the armored minotaur, who nods at him politely but indicates that his business is with the Dwarf Captain.
Captain Crusty is prompt to respond to the Taur Hero. “Ahhh.. Mr. Marblehorn. I see the years have been good to you. You look younger.” The armored minotaur laughs. “Captain, you blowhard. Mister was my father. Call me Alex. I’m here to offer you 2,000 gold for your exclusive services for the month.” “Alex Marblehorn.. Huh.. that’s interesting.. Let’s talk down by the Dahlia.”
Allura pitches an offer to the captain. His motives seem genuine but a bit flighty. The introduction of Alex Marblehorn has him in a flutter.
When Sable asks about the rations, the dwarf captain turns around. “Oh, I’m sorry, sorry young ones. So rude of me. You understand that I cannot turn down such an offer from the son of a Marblehorn?” He looks at Allura, “You look like fine passengers and I would offer my services at anytime but now. I tell you what, my friend Parsons is the captain of the Merry Mermaid. He is due in to port here soon. I can tell you he will be happy to transport you for a discount. Tell him Crusty sent you.”
Kiwina asks to see the ships. Captain Crusty seems preoccupied with the wealthy group. Garrat Steadyrunner smiles weakly and shrugs, watching the captain leave with the experienced group. His motives are financial but don’t seem off in anyway. You can’t tell much through the hair on his face. “Well, you got me,” he says. “I am happy to show you the Gallion. I tell you this, the Gallion will not be moved by wind or wave like the Dahlia. Steady as she goes is my mantra.” “Oh, and before I forget.. I have a ship full of rations. You wouln’t be getting that from anyone else.”
Tsak moves out of the way while watching the wealthy group.
Back at the Star Mages table, Falco finds nothing unsavory in the scroll and agrees with the Ethos. Clyde smiles and welcomes him to the Star Mages. Then, as the group meets with the captains, he adds, “I will speak up if we seem to be moving towards Cpt Steadyrunner.” He does perk up at the mention of the Shoals “More then they appear, in what way do you think?” “Oi,” says Captain Steadyrunner. “This isn’t your grandma’s taurnament.”
Finnian says, "Hello," he says with slightly more confidence than before, maybe it's his new badge, "I'm Finnian, what brings you to the Taur Isles, are you in the rose compitition? My companions and I are. I just met most of them but they seem pretty competent, even have a few sailors in the group which I find lucky. I know very little about boats do you?” Gothruk is busy storing his purchases in his bag and his catches the bickering between the captains. He is not surprised by the playful banter between the two. It does seem like they have a friendly rivalry. The full plate Minotaur apologizes for his rudeness, as he tried to get close to Crusty.. The reserved half elf introduces himself to Finnian as Captain Selanlar Erhorn. He owns the good ship Magbellam. He says he has three questing groups already on his vessel, and it’s a fast one, and you’re welcome to squeeze on too. Sense Motive vs DC10: Highlight to display spoiler: {He does not much care about you or your group, but he does care about the payment. He’s taking a cool 2,000 gp to serve a high-level group. -- Captain Garrat Steadyrunner of the Gallion has no other customers and is available immediately. But his ship is, well, “Steady as she goes.” -- The Half-Elf Captain Erhorn of Magbellam. He’s already got three groups on his fast vessel. -- Captain Parsons of the Merry Mermaid. But where is he? Not here yet!
While you are pondering these choices, the other super-powerful group strolls down to the docks and chuckles at you all. They wish you sarcastic “good luck!”s and then teleport away.

I'm sure there is nothing to worry about though, surely the Beast won't remember the scent and be hungry for blood." He finishes with a toothy grin, "Enjoy the trip!"
Rolth gives Kiwina a significant look, glancing surreptitiously at Captain Erhorn and back, trying to remember whether the Captain and the Magbellam have a good reputation amongst the sailing community, and whether having 32 folks on a fast ship makes it a slow boat. Rose Quest Opening Ceremony (Co-DM Cayzle) Friday May 19th, 2017 5:19:21 PM
The party takes the time to look over the vessels at hand.
Rolth teases the well armored group and smiles. The group stares back at him as they head toward a tall wooden ship docked nearby. The Dahlia definitely shows her age. The wood is bleached from the sun and cracks race along the side of the boot. The sails are a yellow hue and it has a roost high in the air about the main sail post. Nonetheless, it seems well-tended and sound. Captain Crusty boards with the adventurers who are willing to pay through the nose for his services, and he shouts to the crew to cast off.
Rolth ponders Erhron’s intentions and tries to recall any information about the captains. Captain Erhorn is relatively new. His boat is a courier vessel, usually carrying small precious cargo and passengers as far as Plateau City. For this voyage, the passengers will need to cram into the cargo holds, the berths, and the deck. “I know... I know, but captain, it’s small,” complains one centaur quester. “Yeah, well if you want a ride, cheap and fast… it’s the only way.” Erhron invites the group to ‘come look’ as his boat.” Kiwina wonders about Erhorn’s destination. “Two groups told me they wanted to head to Minotaur Island,” Erhorn replies. “I think the third group was fine with that. It’s getting late. We’re leaving soon … Do you want to spend your token and take a ride?”
Captain Steadyrunner coughs into his large arms. “Crowwwwded.. It’s tooooo much.” He shrugs. “With me, it will take 13 days. You will have food and all the room you can handle. This joker wants to store you with the barrels and bales, and the ship will likely sink from the weight.”
“Well, I can make it in 9 days, maybe 10,” replies Erhron. “And I work very hard to make sure it’s safe.”
Steadyrunner coughs again.
Allura is taken aback that her charm offensive didn’t work and watches as the two captain argue over who can give the best ride.
Sable is unhappy with the loss of the dwarf ship captain. He dismisses the overloaded ship and begins to scan the crowd for a new captain as the sun begins to set. But the word on the docks is that Captain Parsons and his Merry Mermaid will likely not arrive today. Maybe tomorrow? There may be other ships setting sail tomorrow too.
Tsak Rezar is unable to read the half elf captain and focuses on Steadyrunner. “Steady sounds very safe, but we have some need for urgency. How many days sail would it take you from here to Minotaur Isle Cap'n?” “Thirteen days, sir,” the captain replied. “I can guarantee that.” “You can’t guarantee that,” says Erhron, calmly. “With a typhoon at your back, your waddling lumpen of a ship could not sail so fast. And with the winds so unpredictable around the shoals, you could lose or gain a day. No telling.” “I guarantee it,” Steadyrunner insisted. “Would need to leave right now. The seas at night are challenging but if you know what you’re doing.. Doable,” says Steadyrunner. “I am an expert at night sailing,” Erhron offers.
Falco tries to figure out any information on Captain Parsons as Clayfus appears and begins querying the other captains. “The Merry Mermaid is the best ship afloat. Fastest too,” says a passing liontaur. “Captain Parsons, is the guy you want.” He grins. “He’s an eccentric, though, no doubt, and he is a bit late for the party. There is no telling when he will be here. I’m sure it will be tomorrow or the next day.”
Finnian listens to the fellow half elf and realizes that Captain Erhorn cares nothing for his brethren -- just for the contents of their purses. "Just like back at home." he thinks to himself, reminded of all the times that he was ignored. "Must be a large boat," he deduces. But when Finnian actually sees the Magbellam, he is less than awed. How can everybody fit on there?
Gothruk tries to flag down the armored group (Perception: 7) but they do not see him and load up upon the old Dahlia.
The ships ...
The Gallion is huge but that’s not unnatural, being this is the Taur Islands, and taur-crewed ships are big. Still, it’s a bit boxy, like an ark. Open portholes are located every couple feet along the side facing you. It barely moves next to the dock due to its immense weight.
The Magbellam is a sloop, much smaller than the Gallion. Its form is made for speed, clearly. It rides lightly in the water. On the deck, you see the crew offloading nets and boxes and barrels in an effort to make more room for passengers. Two of the questing groups already aboard are all-taur.
Of course, you have no idea what the Merry Mermaid looks like, since it has not yet arrived in port. But if you are going to crowd onto the Magbellam, you have to do so now, since the other questers are shouting for Erhron to set sail!
Having assessing the situation, Clayfus’s group seems willing to pay for passage on the Magbellam. If the Eight-Petaled Rose does not reserve passage now, the half-elf captain seems willing to somehow cram another eight taurs aboard!

But if we use him, we cut the number of days we'll have to hunt roses in half. And that's assuming we can trade ships once we reach Minotaur Island. I don't care for Erhorn, unless you think we would be able to work with the other groups he already has on board. That would be four groups all sinking or swimming together on the location of the first garden."
More loudly, he says to Steadyrunner, "Your ship wouldn't make a circuit of the Taur Islands before the contest is over. If we take it to the next island, what do you expect us to do then?"
He also looks around to see if any other groups are still looking for boats. (Perception roll: 24)

The majority of the group suggests staying at the Inn overnight and you wouldn’t be the only ones. Clayfs and his merry taurs climbs aboard, taking your spot on the Magbellam. With the boat now full, Captain Erhorn climbs aboard and the boat takes off into the growing darkness.
Rolth wonders about the the Merry Mermaid as Allura recalls a rescue that was attributed to the Merry Mermaid. “There was a pirate attack on the Merrimack twenty or so years ago leaving the large ship broken and washed up on the sea. It’s been told that the Merry Mermaid was the only ship willing to rescue the survivors from the shallows.”
Kiwina whispers, "I'm not opposed to obtaining more information about Steadyrunner because he has some history with the shoals and we may want that. But if we use him, we cut the number of days we'll have to hunt roses in half. And that's assuming we can trade ships once we reach Minotaur Island. I don't care for Erhorn, unless you think we would be able to work with the other groups he already has on board. That would be four groups all sinking or swimming together on the location of the first garden." Steadyrunner tries to listen into the conversation, curious to what your decision will be but the Magbellam blows a horn as it heads out and drowns out anything he is hoping to hear. “What!” Steadyrunner says to Kiwina then picks up on most of the question. “You can pick up a new boat at every station,” he begins loudly. “I wouldn’t advise using the Gallion for the whole trip. The advantage with the Gallion is you would not need any supplies on the trip and you are getting guaranteed passage in the amount of time I said.” Outside of your group, three others are talking to other captains. There is a dwarf captain, up ahead but he is in a deep conversation with a minotaur and several human warriors. For the Captains, if they win, they gain prestige. To win the taurnament is to win food for your entire family and the prestige of having a ship that can deliver.
Gorthuk Offers a prayer and encouragement that the wait will be rewarded. He is happy to have Finnian’s company.
Finnian is very disappointed by the half elf and brings up the idea of teleporting.
Sable listens to the conversation about teleporting.
Tsak Rezar agrees with the others on staying over and then asks Falco “Hey Falco, I'm not familiar with magic, what is required to teleport a party to another location? Is scroll the only way?”
Falco responds, “Teleporting would be the right tool for the job, clearly others have thought of the same thing, but I don’t have the experience, only the theory. It is possible for a group of mages, like the group I just joined, to set up portal circles and maybe even make them perment .” Then he adds, “I think our time is better spent today looking for more information on the quest, there must be a tale of past winners in the library I would think.”
Those who know Liontaur Island recall that there is no such thing as a library here on the island. Indeed, many liontaurs are illiterate, and there is still a tradition of shamans and skalds who memorize the important stories of the past. Some of the merchant families likely have small book collections in their clanhouses, but they would not tend to share.
Soon it it full night and there is nothing much to do but to head to bed. The town shuts down pretty early, here on the edge of civilization. The beds at the Wanderers’ Rest are comfy, at least. And in the morning, the bacon and sausage and leftover stew is quite good. While you are enjoying your repast, word comes in that the Merry Mermaid has been sighted coming into port.

In the hours between supper and breakfast, Falco tries to find a bard with knowledge of the last contest. Falco only Please Highlight to display spoiler: { You find a wise woman -- maybe a witch or shaman or bard? -- one her stories are frightening. Stories of limbs lost and questers starved. Not too encouraging but maybe it's just her. She does offer one interesting intuition; she has heard the verses of the minotaur poet, and her heart tells her that the first two lines of each verse reveal a general location, and the last line helps pinpoint the exact spot.}
Morning arrives and the energy around you is thick as molasses. Breakfast is wonderful within the Wanderer’s Rest and the heroes of the Eight-Petal Rose hotfoot it down to the docks in the hope of beating the remaining teams to the Merry Mermaid.
Rolth suggests the group get moving as Sable advances with him. Sable checks the weather and finds a small dark cloud out in the horizon threatening rain.
Once dressed, everyone meets at the docks. The group’s eagerness serves them well, and they end up right at the Merry Mermaid as she ties up.
Kiwina looks over the Merry Mermaid as three groups of adventurers quarrel over three boats. The Merry Mermaid is the smallest of the group, a medium-sized boat with a few sails but built to move. It should make the trip to all three isles and back in record time but it leaves little room for supplies or cargo.
Tsak Rezar spots the captain and notices him working hard on the deck of the Mermaid. He is uninterested in the commotion below and the groups trying to page him. Captain Parson seems to be well-regarded in town, especially for a non-taur, but you wouldn’t know that by watching him ignore everyone. There has to be a way to get his attention.

Allura is quiet but thoughtful.
Rolth and Tsak manage to distract the kindly Captain from his work-induced concentration. “Up... up... Watch the finish. I just had this polished.” Captain Parsons said with a wide smile. “Polished... ha... ha,” he laughs. “Did you say you had a message from old Crusty?”
Just then another group steps forward. A tall mixture of taurs. “Captain, we have been waiting…” They started but Captain Parsons cut them off.
“These fine passengers have a message from my brother. You’all step back.” “Friend,” he says to Rolth. You think he must be speaking metaphorically, since he is a human and Crusty is a dwarf. “Can you and your friends sail? If you ship off with me you will have to set the sails and avoid falling off. I’m a paw short of a full crew.”
The other group began to protest but the captain silences them with a look.

Outside of the Merry Mermaid, other ships jostle nervously at their dockages -- these are named the Gallion (known from yesterday, still seeking passengers), the Pismard (a human ship), the Towchoth’s Fortune (a liontaur ship), and the Ritzger Herald (a minotaur ship). The last two are huge taur ships, lumbering monstrosities that looked like fortresses. The Pismard is a long, fast ship, just one small sail, too small you think, although the mast is tall and thick. How it moves is impossible to tell from here.

“Welcome aboard new passengers,” Parsons says with a smile to the chagrin of the other group. “Liontaur,” he says to Rolth. “You seem quite capable to speak up and make an impression. What do you think we should call him?” He asks to a half-elf, named Bucko, standing beside him. “I don’t know Captain. You like the B words, any that come to mind?” “Boss, would be perfect.” The captain says as he welcomes Rolth onto the boat. “You know, if ole Crusty likes you’all then I do too.” He watches as the other group begins to leave in a huff. The Gallion blows an alarm as it begins to float away. Sable is welcomed next as Parsons’ bosun Beckn steps down to welcome the minotaur. “A minotaur is always helpful on deck.” Beckn, is a very tan middle-aged human with sun-bleached short-cropped hair -- wiry and missing his left ear. “We could use you if someone falls off the deck,” he adds. “All we have is a rope and pulley to recover anyone.” Gothruk adds, “It would also do you well to be transport to the winners of the century held festival. Which we fully intend to be. We also have coin and tokens for which to pay for your services.” “I agree, my friend,” Parsons says. “I will charge you a one token per location, if that’s ok. I have enough supplies to feed you and house you while on board but you can’t store anything. I will need to leave once you depart the ship. The Merry Mermaid is a very busy ship.” “Marblehorn,” Beckn says to Kiwina. “A bit snooty that one is. His father was the same way. Just died a couple years ago. He was a hero and knew it. That’s just not a way to leave for everyone that has to listen to it everyday. Welcome.” Beckn gives Tsak a wide berth. A bit uncomfortable with the half orc. He still manages to welcome Tsak with a smile. Falco says to the captain. “I will confess that I know little of sailing but I will help where I can. Perhaps you need someone to record your exploits? I am a fair hand with a quill and I am sure you have stories that people may enjoy.” “I also do not mind heights and am fairly nimble though I would need to learn knots to be much use.” Parsons responds, “Hey, all are welcome on the Merry Mermaid. A scribe is always a plus on board. Bucko will help you with the knots, if needed. Finnian waits as they discuss the impending voyage. “Hey,” the captain shouts. “Bumbles, you coming?” He says toward Finnian the half elf waiting at the rear of the party.

Tsak returns Beckn's smile with a toothy grin, then turns to see how Finnian is doing. He's pretty sure that the old sailor was being ironic in calling a half-elf Bumbles. Have you spent much time on a boat then Finnian? It might take a bit of getting used to, but by the end of our quest you won't want to go back on dry land.

Rolth heartily thanks Captain Parsons and moves aboard the ship. "Boss at your service, Captain," he salutes smartly and quickly stows his gear wherever the bosun indicates. After that, he quickly introduces himself to the remaining crew members, and asks what he can do to help make ready for sailing. Only later does he look around and notice that Allura was not among those who boarded the ship. He looks for her, but if she is not to be found, he shrugs in acceptance and looks ahead, not back. (Perception = 18)

Falco smiles as he transition from the land to the sea. While not a sailor he grew up a crafts-person and merchant on an island so he is at least comfortable.
Seeing Finnian's unease he addresses him "You know I have spent some time on boats and they made me nervous at first, particularly being on the small side I was worried of being knocked over. I would advice the best thing to do is simply not think of it as a boat. Think of it is a building, its bigger then some."

Kiwina had been hoping for more conversation with Captain Steadyrunner, and looks to see what the alarm on the Gallion is about. Did he finally convince a team he'd be fast enough? (Perception roll = 24)
Perhaps the team will find him on the homecoming leg of the race, if the timing works out. Meanwhile, if he's going to crew on the Mermaid, Kiwina had best become familiar with it.
Finnian (Zeke) (HP:11/11; AC: 16; Touch: 13; Flat: 13; CMD: 17) Friday May 26th, 2017 1:14:16 PM
Finnian looks around and realizes that Bumbles must be him. "Ye-Yes I'm coming" He stammers and tentatively steps aboard.
"It's not the boat that makes me nervous as much as it is the sea. It's not like I've never been on a boat, I just try to avoid them when I can."
"I guess this is it, setting sail to find our first rose." He thinks to himself as he grabs a hold of the railing to keep his balance.

Sable, glad to have a role onboard quickly moves aft. He looks around for a billhook or pole he can use to improve his reach. (Perception 22). He also readies his net as a further rescue device. Once ready, he stands on watch as the ship gets underway.
Rose Quest Start (Co-DM Cayzle) Friday May 26th, 2017 5:12:24 PM
Tsak Rezar returns Beckn’s smile and turns to see how Finnian is doing and says, “Have you spent much time on a boat then Finnian? It might take a bit of getting used to, but by the end of our quest you won't want to go back on dry land.”
Falco smiles, while transitioning from land to sea. He also talks to Finnian, "You know I have spent some time on boats and they made me nervous at first, particularly being on the small side I was worried of being knocked over. I would advice the best thing to do is simply not think of it as a boat. Think of it is a building, though bigger than some."
Finnian steps aboard the ship tentatively. He says, "It's not the boat that makes me nervous as much as it is the sea. It's not like I've never been on a boat, I just try to avoid them when I can." He holds on as he climbs aboard.
Rolth thanks Parsons and salutes. Parsons happily returns the salute and directs the supplies to a cargo hold below deck. It is empty, but rapidly filling with supplies and casks of water and rum. The wind whistles overhead. He searches for Allura but she is not around. She seems to of caught the eye of a another sailor or maybe she found another group to band with. [OOC: We are now down to seven players.]
Kiwina is disappointed he wasn’t able to talk to Captain Steadyrunner more, and looks to see that the alarm is just a loud bell ringing that the ship is moving out. You can see the captain near the bridge directing his charges. Kiwina only Highlight to display spoiler: { The Gallion seems to be a tough ship, steady as it goes, but not as nimble as the Merry Mermaid. }
Sable looks for ways to help and grabs a pole.
Gothruk watches keenly.
The ship is soon loaded, and Bucko begins shouting orders. “Raise the jib! Point her into the wind!” Then Captain Parsons shakes his head, eager to be off. “Raise the mainsail too, lads, and and shove off from the dock! Biggun!” -- he is pointing to Sable -- Use that toothpick what you got there and push the Maid off the dock!”
Soon enough, the ship is at sea, and the Captain has his most important question. “Where are you headed, my new friends?”

Kiwina says, "The long leg of the trip being from Liontaur to Minotaur Island, Minotaur Island seems to be the place to go while we are sure of a fast ship." He recites from memory, "Strong horns, purple keep, dungeon garden." He can dig out the scroll if anyone wants to read it. "Does anyone know of a purple keep on Minotaur Island? Doesn't seem that would be easy to miss."
Perhaps, he muses to himself, it's near that castle on the south coast.
(If it matters, Kiwina will not wear his armor while helping to crew the ship, or generally while at sea.)
Rolth Niheow (MarkBat) (16/16 HP | AC: 14; Touch: 11; Flat: 12; CMD: 17) | Glaive +3 1d10+4 x3 | Paws (2) +1 1d4+1 x2| Status: None d20+5=22 ; Friday May 26th, 2017 9:02:50 PM
Rolth gives an encouraging word to Finnian, clapping him on the shoulder as he moves to help raise the mainsail at the Captain's command. "Brave WLA adventurers like ourselves press on even in the face of uncertainty, am I right! Good show, lad, makes me glad to have you at my side."
At the Captain's question regarding our destination, and Sable and Kiwina's responses, Rolth shouts over his shoulder, "Aye, my companions both have the right of it, we seek adventure first at the purple keep on Minotaur Isle." He reminisces about previous sailing jaunts, wondering whether he might have himself seen or heard of such during his own career. (Profession Sailor = 22) He will share his recollections, and ask the Captain if he is familiar with such a place.

Gothruk Gore (Logan) AC 12 (T11/F10) 12/12HP |Guisarme +3 2D6+4| Status: None Sunday May 28th, 2017 9:08:45 AM
Gothruk shouts Anything I can do Capt'in? If not he's going to wonder around the ship getting a feel for the place.
Finnian (Zeke) (HP:11/11; AC: 16; Touch: 13; Flat: 13; CMD: 17) Sunday May 28th, 2017 4:06:52 PM
Finnian allows the others to speak with the captain while he becomes acquainted with the ship. The longer he is on the more he becomes aware of how it pitches and rolls, and he is able to find his footing. He looks at the mast and thinks how it is really just like a tall tree and is able to put asode most of his anxiety. how long will this trip take? he wonders as he strolls about the deck.

Tsak has a quick look around above deck to get his bearings then asks a passing sailor where the best place to store his belongings is. Once that's taken care of he does whatever he can see needs doing to assist the short-handed crew.

Falco listens to the big folks give their commands. To the Minotaur it seems and we will see what we can find.
When he has a moment he will gather his new companions: "Before we left I found a bard to try and gather information. Her stories of the last contest were not encouraging. Lost limbs and starving questers but there was one bit. She heard the poems and was convinced that the first two lines are general location and the last gives the exact spot. As we travel we should keep that in mind I think."
[OOC: Can we add the poem to the Woldipedia page for easy reference? [/ooc]
