"Walk in the Light, Dulcet." Baslim nods to the witches and turns toward the portal. It would be difficult to say whether his words were a farewell or a warning. A Walk Through Shadows (DM Damarr) Tuesday June 6th, 2017 2:01:50 PM
With much gusto, the heroes walk into the cloud of shadows at the center of the Standing Stones and step into the Shadow Lands on the other side.
Evaris & Baslim offer healing to the group, while Lanliss says nobody is in dire straits and you should press on. Brom & Barratore lead the way at the ready, with Edson following close behind, after a brief prayer and moment of reflection. Baslim & Emrys bid Dulcet and her coven farewell as Emrys grabs the slain snapping turtle that was a Shadow Ahool.
As you follow the silvery path (as in a Find the Path spell), you notice that the features of the Shadow Lands swirl by, like looking through a many-layered silk veil. Sometimes you see blurred, ghostly images of people, plants, and monsters; sometimes just swirling smoke. Sparkling red Ley Lines glow throughout and feel like equal parts power and danger.
Knowledge (planes) DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: { The Shadow Lands is a mysterious place that leads from the lands of the living to the lands of the dead. To many, it is only place of legend, misremembered as an "Ethereal" or "Astral" plane. To others, a part of their very faith and existence. It connects to the Wold in such a way that the dead know how to find it as well as those priests who deal with the dead. Where it overlaps the Wold, one can stand in the Shadows and peer back at those who may not see an invisible watcher. If one were to walk its dark paths deeper, or travel its glowing red streams and rivulets, it would be as if one traveled a very grim place, a haunted place, for it is the place where the living mix with the dead. The living have no shadows there, and the dead are only shadow. Both states of being may travel this realm, though neither can call it home. But high overhead, stars shine brightly down on all creatures, more brightly than they do in the Wold.} (See Shadow Realms in the Woldipedia Woldology for more.
Even without casting a spell, Emrys will notice that it is much easier to connect to the Ley Lines here, reducing the miss chance on Ley Line checks by 5%; only failing on a 1-15 on the d100. Witch Spells are also +1 DC because of the greater power of Ley Lines in this realm.
Your travel is mostly uneventful. Aside from the somewhat blurred, otherworldly sights and sounds of the Shadow Lands, nothing untoward happens. Some of you remember from your studies that time operates differently here; all of you can feel it. Maybe you notice it because you’re still close to your home plane, or maybe years of adventuring have attuned your senses beyond normal means. Whatever sort of perception allows you to sense it, Time, here - though not far removed from the steady march of the minute hand - does have a certain drag to it.
So you’d estimate you’ve been walking for maybe an hour when you see a shadowy figure. It appears to be a ghostly centaur, decked out with a number of weapons (lance, longbow, sword, daggers), standing a little less than 100ft away on the Silver Path, in the direction you’re going.

Knowledge (nature) DC 15: Highlight to display spoiler: {You're pretty sure that 100ft, the distance you first noticed the centaur at, is about the maximum charging distance for most centaurs.}
As you draw closer to the ghostly centaur, most of you are able to see the symbol on her head.
((OOC: Per the Perception skill, every 10ft of distance adds +1 to the Perception DC. If you all move as close as Brom at 40ft, it's only DC 24 Perception to notice it.))
Seeing it better still doesn't help Brom identify the symbol, though, or recognize the centaur's undead nature. But he does tell Lanliss that the rogue hasn't gone crazy, yet. There is a centaur there. Evaris points out the trouble that ghosts can be, while Emrys easily recognizes the symbol and warns the others - a ghost bearing the symbol of the god of death should probably be approached with some measure of caution and tact.
Though the Shadow Lands are Gargul's domain, the beings that choose to reside in this dark place between life and death are given nearly as much free reign as the noble races populating the fertile lands of the Wold.
So, as Baslim approaches the centaur with his hands raised in greeting, Edson wonders if she will recognize him as another follower of Gargul.
As you draw closer, the centaur's interest in your group appears to wander a bit. "My name is Matilda." She states, raising one hand in a brief wave. "Something of a shepherd now, myself, I suppose." She gives a wry chuckle. "Eventually iron rusts, and the gentle stream grinds the stone to pebbles. We all must maintain the balance in our own ways. Be careful how you shepherd your light through these Realms of Shadow, Paragon of Alemi."
Matilda's gaze roves over the adventurers, as an appraiser's eye might consider a jeweler's wares in the marketplace. She makes no indication of hostile intent, but neither do her hands stray far from her weapons. Make a Diplomacy (or other social skill) check if you're asking for aide.

A Walk Through Shadows (DM Damarr) Thursday June 8th, 2017 4:44:08 PM
Matilda gives Brom a scowl and the start of a retort when Evaris makes her own introduction and asks the centaur to help track down the unknown forces Scrying on them and spreading Shadows across the planes. Lanliss, Edson, and Velarin let the more gregarious party members do the talking, while Barratore keeps a lookout.
Emrys thoughtfully rephrases Brom's blunt question, with his own request for assistance, and Baslim backs the heroes' diplomatic endeavor.
Matilda's stern features soften a bit, and a warm smile makes a brief stop on her lips. "I help ferry souls through the Shadow Lands as part of my penance to the Grey Wanderer." She says, giving Brom a disapproving look and a nod to Emrys. "You all are not destined for the Lands of Rest, at least not yet, so I have no business with you, but your journey through the Shadows drew my interest as I passed by."
"It's true that Gargul cannot abide those who would subvert the cycle of life and death through necromancy, but I was 'blessed' with my current ghostly form at the time of my death." Matilda begins her story, adding to Baslim's explanation of Woldian spirituality. "A few adventurous souls took the trouble to give my angry spirit a measure of rest, but Gargul, in his irreproachable wisdom, required further reparations. So, here I am, a ghost in the service of a god that reviles undead. I suspect my continued incorporeality is another aspect of my punishment. The mark protects me, in more ways than one, from those zealous servants of Gargul who would otherwise seek to destroy me. In short - no, I am not what you would call 'true undead' but I am, most unfortunately, still a ghost in all respects."
The centaur turns back to regard Evaris and Emrys.
"I don't know your destination, nor can I see the path you travel, but I suspect you will not be much longer through the Shadow Lands. I didn't see any creatures as you described pass the other way, but whatever magic is speeding you through most likely ferried them along in the same manner. You should be wary, however, while traveling through. Your friends' magic that brought you here, while it appears to ease your passage through the Shadow Lands, does not grant you invisibility or protection from its denizens."
Matilda pauses as she moves to leave. "I wish I could better sate your curiosity and prepare you for what lies ahead, but, if you have no more questions, I must return to my duties."

After thanking Matilda for the information, you continue on your way. Although this is probably one of the more interesting hikes you've ever been on, the rest of your journey passes uneventfully.
It's something just shy of 3 hours since you left Matilda when you see the end of the silver path. The faintly glowing line stops in front of a mass of swirling shadows, much like the one you entered at the Standing Stones. This one sits between two large, grey stone pillars. Barratore, as the biggest potential meal, gets hit by six strands from one monster and two from the other (8 total, hitting 23, 25, 29, 30 16, 29, 26, 22 vs Flat-Footed Touch AC).
Each monster pulls the minotaur 5ft closer to itself (30 & 31 vs Flat-Footed CMD; pulled 10ft).
Barratore, make 8 saves vs Fort DC 25 or take 6, then 4, then 2, then 3, then 5, then 2, then 5, then 3 Strength Damage from the strands (30 strength damage total).
Then, the monster on the left decides that eating Brom, a sizeable snack himself, is better than fighting over the big one, and hits the barbarian with three of its four remaining strands (23, 14, 22 vs Touch AC). Two strands stick for a moment and each pulls Brom 5ft closer to the monster. (38, 37 vs CMD; pulled 10ft).
Brom, make 3 saves vs Fort DC 25 or take 1, then 4, then 1 Strength Damage.
The Shadow Ropers rumble 10ft closer to the party.
They have concealment in the dimly-lit Shadow Realms; please roll 20% miss chance on attacks (as a supernatural ability, Darkvision doesn’t help vs this concealment).
Also please make caster level checks vs SR.

As Brom charges Shadow Roper 1, the beast hits him with an opportunistic bite (bite attack has reach). The barbarian's swing goes wide in the shifting shadows, and he takes 32 damage (hit AC 28).
Velarin responds just as quickly with two fireballs targeting Roper 2. The first, Empowered Fireball, rolls over the monster's back with no visible effect (SR 27), but the second, Quickened Fireball, has a much greater impact. A strange gurgling, grinding below erupts from the beast as its flesh crackles in the flames.
Evaris targets Roper 2 as well, but his Searing Light spell hits the creature without penetrating its magical defences.
Edson fires two arrows at Roper 2, hitting very close to its eye with one (crit doesn't confirm).
Emrys hits both Roper 1 & 2 with a Glitterdust spell, blinding one and negating their concealment. (Save the 3rd use of your Quicken Rod & the spell slot; one Glitterdust spell, centered between the portal and the Ropers, hits both without coming close to Brom. I put a purple circle on the map).
Lanliss sneaks around the side of Roper 1. The monster, momentarily blinded by Emrys, doesn't see the rogue move behind it. (I moved you 12 squares = 60ft. So you are behind the roper now flanking with Brom).
Barratore finds himself staggered by the loss of strength, and Baslim casts Freedom of Movement to unencumber the fighter (see note below).
Shadow Roper 1 hits Brom with a bite (88 on blind miss chance beats 50%; hit AC 23). It takes another chunk out of the barbarian for 36 damage. Blind, it has no way to target anyone with its strands this round, but it makes the save at the end of the round (Will 23) to remove the blindness effect from Glitterdust.
Shadow Roper 2 hits Barratore with 4 strands (1 miss. Touch 12, 21, 19, 23, 20), and hits V with one strand (Touch 27).
Barratore, make 4 Fortitude saves vs DC 25 or take 5, 2, 3, 1 Strength damage.
Velarin, make 1 Fort save vs DC 25 or take 5 Strength damage.
Shadow Roper 2 pulls Barratore 20ft closer, beating his strength-damaged CMD of 26 with all 4 checks. The minotaur, if he has the strength to keep his eyes open, can see the beast's jaws gnashing and dripping saliva as it's teeth scrape against his armor (reach w/bite attack; miss vs AC 28). Velarin is also pulled 5ft closer.
Note: These Ropers appear to operate differently than you might remember. There is no Grapple with the strands. They simply make a CMB check to pull you 5ft closer for each strand that hits. They shoot six strands, which do 1d6 Str damage each (Fort DC 25), if they hit with a touch attack.
Barratore, drink a potion or some other action from your previous position, since you weren't grappled. Baslim, you can take an extra action as well. See the map for the previous round if you need to for reference. I'd rather not rewind & move things back at this point. That's okay with the extra actions?

Portal Guards (DM Damarr) Round 2.5 Wednesday June 14th, 2017 7:37:46 PM
As Barratore collapses, his companions spring into action.
Brom and Lanliss assault Roper 1 from both sides. The rogue sinks his blade into one soft spot in the creatures back (one hit, SA damage applies), while Brom hammers the beast’s face with the edge of his own blade.
Velarin hits Roper 2 with a Scorching Ray, and the beast collapses into a smoldering pile, which Baslim could easily enclose within a domed Stone Wall, if he wanted. Unfortunately, Brom and Lanliss are too close to the still-living Roper 1 for him to enclose it in such a way.
Stone Wall:Highlight to display spoiler: {Although Stone Wall is not exactly meant to entrap creatures as a Resilient Sphere, it does look like you can create enough material at CL12 to completely enclose a large creature, under slightly more favorable circumstances.}
Scorching Ray: Highlight to display spoiler: {The Scorching Ray spell description states that each ray can be fired at a different target, but they fire simultaneously. For future reference, please name the exact targets when you cast the spell (only if/then is referencing others’ attacks or actions since the last DM post – you can’t redirect two rays if the first ray kills the target).}
Evaris calls for everyone to gather close so he can cast Wind Walk to protect against the Ropers’ strands, but that may be unnecessary at this point.
Emrys moves in range of Evaris’ spell and casts Good Hope to bolster his allies.
Edson, already standing nearby, fires two more arrows at Roper 1, hitting with one.
Hearing the action behind him, Brom puts on a show of barbaric heroism to finish off Roper 1, which appears to fold in on itself as its black blood flows out onto the grey-tinged soil.
Moments after each Shadow Roper is slain, wispy tendrils creep out from the portal and begin to wrap them in a cocoon of shadow (even inside a Wall of Stone, though you couldn't see it). The beasts’ remains quickly fade from view, only to reappear in their original positions, flanking the Shadow Portal. The swirling shadows thrash violently and you hear a raspy voice call out “Darkness will come for you, Defenders!”
And the cloud is gone; presumably through the portal, taking the Shadow Ropers with it. You stand alone, again, in the Shadow Lands. Mostly. It seems your brief battle with the Ropers drew the attention of some of the locals. Glowing red eyes and shifting shadows, still a ways away yet, approaching cautiously, are the only indication of the Shadow Lands’ first true notice of your presence. The silver path leads you still toward the portal, and you notice two distinct indentations where the Ropers had stood. More than the weight of their bodies – it looks like intentional depressions designed to hold things.
