Pocket Civil War

Out of the Pan (DM Damarr)
Thursday June 15th, 2017 8:48:56 PM

After downing a few potions and a restorative spell or two, it's agreed that dawdling in the Shadow Lands, at the scene of a recent, high-powered battle, is probably ill-advised.

Approaching the portal, it's clear there is a battle going on on the other side. You can't make out many details; the combatants all look the same from here, and it doesn't look like there's any big shadow monsters.

As you step up to the portal, the glint of something familiar catches your eye. In the Shadow Ropers' gate cubbies you find a few items likely gathered from their previous victims.

64,000 gold pieces
Cloak of Arachnida, 14,000 gp
Periapt of Wound Closure, 15,000 gp
Figurine of Wondrous Power, Onyx Dog, 15,500gp
Portable Hole, 20,000gp

Which you quickly stash for later identification (I assume you will make the checks) and sorting, as a family of man-sized. shadowy spiders skitters by, maybe thinking better of your edibility after they got a little closer. Maybe just seeing if there's enough for their cousins. Either way, you step through the portal, and walk into a large cavern.

The Silvery Path wavers and fades, and the portal closes behind you.

The cavern is comprised of an ocher-colored stone, half-carved and half natural. The ceiling is 20 feet above your heads, and a number of stones in the floors, walls, and ceiling give off an orange glow (there are still many areas of dim light and shadow). Approximately 100ft away, there's a mass of about 20 humanoids, all of the same apparent race, in the opening rounds of a heated battle.

You see some of them are casting spells, while others wield two weapons, one in each hand. It appears the combatants are working together in two distinct groups, each one fighting from the mouth of a tunnel connected to the cavern you're in. One tunnel appears to be natural stone, while the other is finely worked.

Perception DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {Thin, hairless, pale, red humanoids with oversized heads, hands, and feet; their mouth, nose, and ears are mere slits that are overshadowed by large gem-like eyes of green, blue, purple, yellow, or clear iridescence. The group from the natural caverns are wielding wood, bone, and stone weapons and wearing leather or hide armor. The worked-stone group has metal weapons and armor.}

Spellcraft DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {The natural group is casting spells like a Witch or Druid. The worked group is casting spells like a Witch or Cleric.}

Barratore cannot make out any more detail and has no knowledge of the planes or magic. While he knew several languages, he would need to be much much closer and so he looks at V and Emrys.

Pocket dimensions have their own physical and magical laws that may or may not be very different from what we have at home. Be cautious with what we do. Something like a fireball could be just a spark, or it could be 10 times the size and 10 times the damage."

"My Helm of comprehending Languages will allow me to understand any spoken language, but I cannot communicate back. I may be able to decipher their written words, and possibly figure out how to write back to them, but I am unsure."

"I could loan my helm to someone sneaky to get closer and listen in, or I could try casting invisibility for a closer look, and dim door back immediately if discovered. Standing in the place, you notice that colors appear different here. Is that due to the strange nature of this place, or the orange light emanating from the walls and floors? The din of the battle is deafening in the enclosed cavern, and you have to gather close to hear each other speak.

Evaris relates what he sees, and laments that his tongues spell has expired. Amidst the noise of battle little can be made out anyway. Evaris advises caution in this pocket realm, and the natural laws can be tricky in such places. He does see fist-sized balls of magical flame thrown, which seems to behave normally.

Barratore is wary, looking for the others to act in this situation.

Velarin confirms what Evaris reports. He can see that none of the spells here exceed 4th or 5th level - at least the ones he sees. He offers to allow another to wear his helm that let’s the wearer to understand languages. Edson takes him up on this, proposing to sneak forward and over hear what is being said.

Emrys announces that he is a gifted “polyglot”, which garners some quizzical looks from Brom and Barratore. Emrys offers to confer his linguistic ability on his friends. He too urges caution in this place.

Lanliss can see the fighting, but which side is in the right? And the right of what?

Brom smiles broadly - this all looks like fine to him. Like Lanliss, he wonders what the right course of action is here.

Evaris casts Invisibility on Velarin and Emrys. They move forward. The fight is about 100’ away. Since one cannot see the other, Velarin and Emrys stay within reach of each other and advance 30’ in this round.

As Velarin and Emrys, one warrior clad in leather points in the general direction of the party. It’s difficult to know if they see the invisible duo. He shouts, “Ach, more Ghitt trickery! They summon help for another dimension, unable to fight their own battles!”

In response, a metal clad warrior on the other side shouts, “Nay, do not attempt to trick us with thine illusions. Ye shall not prevail here, nor shall ye stop inevitable progress!”

The leather clad warrior shoots back, “Bah, your progress ruins the natural beauty of this place. You despoil this place with your lies as well as your tools!”

They seem to speak common, though each side seems to have an accent. Their mouths, like their nose and ears are little more than slits in their over-sized heads. They regard you with large, glittering gem-like eyes.

The fighting has diminished somewhat as the two sides focus in your direction. But in doing so, their weapons seem to be trained on you as well!

What now?

Emrys fights his will to cringe once they are spotted so easily. He curses to himself that he never considered that these cavern people would have a different form of sight, not unlike some among the population of the Underwold. A type of vision that renders illusions like invisibility completely useless. Knowing the jig is up, he gives Velaran a pat on the arm and releases from him. Emrys then attempts to address the outsiders.

”We humbly beg your pardon … we are but mere travelers who wished not to intrude on your conversation … we were not summoned, nor do we mean any ill will. Since this is our first time to visit this place, we weren’t wanting to cause stress or alarm, for our appearance may seem strange to you. As Emry’s speaks, he realizes that he was mistaken about being seen. Likewise, Velarin’s sudden appearance seems to startle both factions. Nonethless, Emry’s words do seem to have a calming effect.

Evaris says that you are not illusions, and only seek to understand those here.

Baslim raises his hand in a gesture of peace, as he is bathed in white light, that seems to push back the orange glow of this place.

Brom and Barritore remain where they stand. While they do not draw weapons, they are clearly ready for action. Edson marvels at the strange wonder of this place.

You can see that one side fights in natural armors with stone and wood weapons. They are on one side of a beautiful, natural cavern, before a natural opening that lead out. From those clad in leather and furs:

“Ach! Look! Some were sneaking up!”
“Yes, and one’s still hidden, though I can hear him. There, by the other.”
“They are not to be trusted.”
“Well, it’s the Ghitt that are not to be trusted! Perhaps they will help us in our fight!”
“They look funny.”
“They do, but they speak true. And what’s so funny ‘bout peace, love and understanding?”
“Whom do you support then? The honorable Zherr that protect this place, and preserve it’s natural beauty, or those Ghitt,” pointing across the cavern at the metal clad warriors, “who would piss all over this place, trying to remake it in their image?”
“Yes, you speak as honorable folk, and one dedicated to Alemi is surely a good sign. Help us defeat these Ghitt surlags!”
“Yes, your words ring true to me. Help is in our fight - we are in the right here!”
“We are the Zherr, who work naturally with the stone, not like those abominations (pointing to the other group) who have sullied the world with … with… that!” (waving at the worked stone)

This group seems to lower their weapons, though they keep a wary eye on the Ghitt across from them.

The other group stands on a more ornate, worked side the cavern. The tunnel enterance behind them is beautifully carved, enhancing the natural stone and working the gems embeded in it’s walls. These, clad in metal and fine cloth, say:

“Use care, these newcomers surely mean us harm, one way or another.”
“Aye, but though they look strange, they may indeed be good, gentle people.”
“They say they are travellers. In sooth, this may be, for I did see a portal open and close. How mayest we know they were not summoned here by those Zherr skum?”
“Nay, heed not the words of the Zherr. Thou shouldst not ally with them, but rather with us!
“Aye, the Zherr cannot be trusted! Assure us of your allegiance to the Ghitt!”
“Come then, ally with us. From your garb, thou dost look to be people of progress. Seek not to ally with those stuck in the past.”
“Those Ghitt are varlets who seek the dark ages, stuck in the past. We Ghitt lovingly craft our world to please the eyes of the gods, including your Alemi, whilst they would reject the crafts blessed upon us!”

This group is a bit more demanding and they keep their weapons up, on guard against both your party and the opposing Zherr.

Thought clad differently, both have a similar appearance: Thin, hairless, pale red humanoids with oversized head, hands, and feet; their mouth, nose, and ears are mere slits that are overshadowed by large gem-like eyes. Tattoos of alien design cover their bodies.

While the hostilities here seem to have stopped, it seems to be a wary truce for the moment.

He turns toward the Zherr. "There is great beauty to nature in her purest form, and it is admirable to preserve and defend it. In nature, we discover our true essence, and in so doing, learn of the gods' great love for us." He turns to the Ghitt. "But there is also great beauty to be found in the skilled workings of the noble races, and it is admirable to pursue and perfect our crafts. In our works, we discover that we can create something greater than ourselves, and in so doing, perhaps achieve some glimpse of the gods' plans for us." He spreads his hands. Like an actor called to the role of a lifetime, Evaris Leafgreen draws himself up to his full height as he steps forward. He captures the attention of these two warring groups. They seem to listen as he speaks of peace and the hopeful resolution, thoughtfully acknowledging the points of view of each side. And he makes an offer, asking what your group can do to help achieve this peace.

Most of the group watches to see how this will resolve. Baslin and the invisible Emrys speak words of encouragement. Lanliss and Velarin watch expectantly. Edson keeps a sharp eye out and an arrow nocked. The expression on Brom’s face shows his disappointment there there may not be a fight he can join.

Barratore finds the situation annoying and tells them he doesn’t really care about their squabble. He asks the warring factions where to go from here. He also suggests Velarin and Emrys return to the group.

The warriors begin to grumble, but seem more embarrased than angry at the moment. They will discuss and bicker for another several minutes. Some still argue the the righteousness of their viewpoint, but others acknowledge the rightness of Evaris words. While the party can see this this shift is probably temporary, these combatants eventually pull back and leave.

Edson is the first to note, and then the rest of you, that there seems to be one from each side that lingers there. They feign a grumbling departure with the others, and then they move toward your group, speaking in a low voice.

The one clad in furs, looks sidelong at the one on metal armor and then at you as he speaks.

“My name is Weethas and this is Ven. We two are part of a council of sorts that understands this war is stupid. Our disagreements are valid, but not worth bloodshed. You were wise to propose the course you did a moment ago. Allying with one side woulda complicated stuff, and mighta caused more problems we don’t need.”

“Yea, verily not all would see us resolve our differences through battle. Thou seem to be a goodly sort, through your appearance be odd to our eyes. Wilt thou accompany us, for we have seen your before? There are others that would speak with you, and it may not be safe to discuss matters in this place. Indeed, many things are not safe now…. Please come this way. There are some you should meet.” His thoughts seem to trail off.

A Tenuous Peace - DM Mark  d20=1 ; d20=13 ;
Thursday June 22nd, 2017 4:07:48 PM

Barratore and Brom share a tender moment, lamenting the lack of fighting and killing. Along with Lanliss, they move to follow Weethas and Ven into the passageway.

Evaris senses that these “men” are tense, and does not follow. He gestures for his friends to hold as well. Unfortunately, Evaris is still invisible and Lanliss bumps into the unseen Bard and come to a stop. Evaris asks, "Is there something beyond that door we should be concerned about? For I would hate for there to be any misunderstandings between us, now that a truce has finally been achieved." Likewise, Baslim asks if there are those who might have an interest in prolonging the hostilities?

Edson and Valarin remain on guard, looking around - tense and ready for action. Edson can see that it will be awkward entering the passage with a bow at the ready. Barratore will be a bit squished in passageway.

The party looks around, and nothing seems amiss. At least, not that they can see.

Weethas and Ven seem puzzled that you have not moved to follow Weethas.

Weethas says to the group, “Something you should be concerned about? Plenty, we hope. So, let’s go. Nuthin’s gonna bite you in here.”
Ven adds, “Prithee, come with us. Quickly. There are those that would speak with thee.”
Then he says, “Weethas, art thou assured that these are indeed the ones we have scryed?”
“C’mon Ven. A minotaur, a dwarf and an elf travelling together? I’m pretty sure this is them.”

They both seem a bit anxious. Weethas is in the lead. What do you do?

Emrys can sense that these two are honest, but they have yet to reveal everything ... and rightfully so. It's not wise to divulge all your secrets to a group you just met. It seems these two have good heads on their shoulders ... if somewhat strange and misshapen.

The hidden door was very clever. He would have been hard pressed to notice it. His mind begins to postulate a multitude of theories about this realm and their people. He thinks this place could be an earth elemental realm. They both factions show reverence to the stone in their own way ... much like they would a god. Zealots do produce the kind of fanaticism he witnessed earlier.

He listens intently to what the two outsiders say. He also looks around to see anything symbolic of a holy symbol. If the stone is their god, then this cavern is their temple. He still hasn't come up with a single idea why somebody from this realm is so interested in them.

Most move to follow Weethas into the tunnel. Emrys remains a bit puzzled that the party has been a matter of interest to these folks before they arrived here. Emrys looks around for any symbols that might suggest what god or gods these people worship, but finds no answer.

The good Shepheard Baslim, however, plants himself firmly, demanding answers before going further. “"Wait. I'm not taking another step until you tell us how and why you scryed us."

Weethas and Ven look at each other, worried and a bit confused.

Weethas says, “Please come with us and your questions will be addressed - but not here. It’s not safe. There are shadows about.”

Ven looks increasingly anxious. “Weethas, perchance we do not need all of them. If this one refuses to go, mayhap he should stay here whilst we proceed with the others.”

Weethas replies to Baslim, “it has to do with the tiny sword, but I’ll not say more here.” Then he looks at the Minotaur, gesturing toward Baslim, “Can’t you just pick him up and carry him? We should not answer your questions here, but I can tell you that we mean you no harm. We need your help.”

All but Baslim, Emrys and Ven are in the passage way.

Should I Stay or Should I Go - DM Mark
Monday June 26th, 2017 5:31:38 PM

Brom doesn’t really see a downside to following these two. Either they get answers, or it’s a trap and there’s a fight. Either way it’s a win! Barratore says it’s probably not a good idea for him to try to grab Baslim and bring him along, but he is in agreement with Brom on accompanying these two strange men.

Lanliss is getting impatient. He interested in going with these two to find out what this has to do with the tiny sword, and how you might get home.

Velarin points out that he can get you all home, or at least close to home, with Plane Shirft.

Edson is more at ease, waiting for Baslim to decided where to go.

Weethas and Ven implore you two to go with them. Weethas looks at the group, a bit confused. “Well, those that’ll come with us, let’s go then. If’n some of you refuse, I guess you can wait here.” He moves to lead those that will go down the corridor.

Ven looks nervously back into the empty chamber. “We art part of a secret council, the knowledge of which would cause trouble for both of us. There be a growing threat, but we should not discuss it hither. if't be true thee refuse to wend with us, we can leaveth thee hither and asketh the others if they wilt cometh, but I doubt they wilt. Evaris apologizes for the group’s lack of trust, saying, "We've faced treachery so often we have come to expect it just about everywhere. Smiling he adds, "You should see us buying a pie from the bakery!"

This causes Barratore, Brom and Edson to drift off into fond memories of pie.

Velarin the miracle worker says he likes pie, but prefers a nice Mutton, lettuce, and tomato sandwich. He says he also likes blowing things up.

Lanliss sighs.

The Paragon of Alemi scowls and reluctantly agrees to accompany these two strange men into the tunnel, "Fine! Fine. But I have an I-told-you-so ready if things go south."

“Finally,“ says Ven in the lead. He moves away from the the diagram of two intersecting circles he’d begun drawing in the dirt to move down the passageway. Weethas follows in silence after Baslim enters, and closes the door behind them. Then he moves up to the front near Ven. The lighting in here is not as bright as the other room, but the dim light is perfectly adequate to avoid obstacles as you go. The light seems to come from glowing orange crystals embeded in the walls, but fewer than in that main chamber where you entered.

As you go, you travel along a sometimes cramped passage. It twists and winds, sometime a step or two up or down, and occasionally there is a side tunnel as you go. You travel for about 2 minutes, with Ven or Weethas occasionally calling out an obstacle or two you should take care not to run into or trip on. Then, almost without warning, as teh passage turns and drops there is a break in the floor about 7 feet across.

Ven says, “Uh oh. Sometimes these passages change, but usually not like this. Hey Weethas, there’s a chasam that’s formed, but it can be jumped.” Then he leaps across, lightly brushing the wall with his hand as he does so. “Come on then.”

It’s a DC 14 Acrobatics check to avoid a fall (no decent running start here.) You peer down - it looks to be about a 30’ drop with some rough rocks below. Unfortunately for Barratore, the confined nature of the area will makes this a DC 16 Acrobatics check for him.

The group pauses at the edge. From the back you hear Wethas say, “Tis but a break in the rock. We must onward go.”

Evaris reminds his friends them some of them may be able to make use of the previously cast Wind Walk spell to move across this hazard. Slowly, Evaris assumes a misty form and then floats across the pit. Emrys gently admonishes his friends to take a leap of faith. He, and then Velarin, slowly transform into into mist and move across. All three remain in misty form.

Ven notes those able to transform into mist. “Ooo. You guys are indeed powerful. That’s impressive. Can all of you do that?”

Barratore readies himself as best he can in these cramped quarters and makes the leap - barely - teetering on the edge as he regains his balance. Edson leaps and clears the chasm with ease, grateful for solid ground on the other side.

Baslim leaps, and a momentary panic sets in as he realizes he will not make it. He falls in a heap at the bottom of the chasm, a bit bruised and battered. He notices that the fall seems to have dislodged one of these glowing crystals, which now sits beside him. He looks up to see his friends looking down at him.

Weethas says, “Alas, it looks like one of those folk hath fallen.” He looks down at Baslim. “Why did thee not also turn to mist? Art thee alright? Can thee climb up, or doth thee needeth help?”

As if in response, Barratore lets down a rope to Baslim. Brom helps pull him up.

Like Ven, Weethas jumps across, and like Ven you notice he also lightly brushes his hand against the wall, clearing it with little effort.

You continue down the passageway for another minute or two. Then it opens up into a low-ceilinged meeting room, roughly 40’ in size. (Medium size creatures are unimpeded, but Large are squeezed.) This room is infused with the same orange glow you have seen elsewhere. There seem to be some other exits or alcoves off of this room.

Near the far wall, you see six people of this strange race, sitting on low pillows. They are about 30’ away from you, and like the others you have seen they are all thin, hairless, pale red humanoids with oversized head, hands, and feet. Mouth, nose, and ears are mere slits, with closed eyelids stretched over large eyes. They are dressed in simple clothing with fancy embrodery here and there. Elaborate tattoos decorate exposed skin. They are not moving.

On the floor in front of them sits a simple clay pot with some liquid in it.

Ven and Weethas make room for you to enter. They look at the seated figures and do not say anything. The room is otherwise quiet.

Lanliss and Velarin wait for the others to speak. Velarin backs up a bit.

Shepheard Baslim steps forward, offering glowing hand and a greeting from a servant of Alemi. Likewise, Evaris says he serves Pantheon. Both speak eloquently of chasing villians and seeking those that spied on the party.

Brom grunts. His sharp eyes note that the orange light from the crystals here flickers a bit.

You are greeted with silence. And then these seated creatures’ eyes snap open all at once - large gem-like eyes of green, blue, purple, yellow, iridescent clear that seem to look everywhere and nowhere all at once. They speak in a stilted manner, starting and finishing each other’s sentences. It’s a little creepy and hard to follow.

“Ah yeeeees.”

End of the Line - DM Mark

Barratore finds their words confusing, but thinks he gets the jist of things. These creatures make Velarin uneasy. He whispers to the others to use care and that you all need rest.

Evaris says that you do have the sword, and ask why these creatures were observing the group.

Baslim suggest that both groups may be able to help each others.

Emrys is quite taken with himself, and is sure everyone else is too. He asks, “who among you gave us the honor of such a compelling invitation?”

As the seated creatures respond, they each seem to pull a small, clay cup out of the earth and take turns reverently pouring themselves a liquid from the clay pot before them, which they sip. They continue speaking in the same stilted manner, still finishing each other’s sentences as they go (for simplicity, their responses are summarized below.)

“Who brouuuuught you herrrre?”
They believe the “the Sarenbeth” have brought you here.

“Showwwwwwww us the sssssssword, the, the, the tiiiiiiiiiny sword.”
They will tell you they do not know it’s properties, but they do know it is an ancient item. They believed “the Sarenbeth” would guide heros to the thing, so they cast it out into the Wold and scryed to see whom it would attract. It attracted you, and your steps were guided here.

“Thiiiiiiiis place?”
They call this place the Krystal Palace. The four Serenbeth Sisters created this Krystal Palace dimension and peopled by the Zherrghitt. The Zherrghitt were simultaneously guardians and workers of the magic infested in the Krystal Palace. They mind the best crystals here. The Sisters gave them ceremonies that allow them to sacrificing these to the volcano, and this sends Glitter and its magic to the Cinnamon Valley. For many years, the Zherrghitt worked in harmony, until the Civil War.

“Aaaaaaaaaaaaaahh. The warrr, war, war.”
Recently, a spirit of discord has come to this place. This spirit and the civil war threaten their way of life and the sacrifice of the crystals. They believe this is a threat to both their and your worlds. It is for this reason that you were brought here. They believe you are powerful heros, with power exceeding their own.

“Reeeeeest. Youuuuuuu seeeek rest. Peace. Rest.”
They will tell you that you should rest, and that you can do so in one of their villages. They believe they can stop this spirit of discord and the resulting war, but must confer on how to do so. They are curiously close lipped about how, but will explain all when you return the next day.

Ven and Weethas both offer to take you to their respective villages.

Ven says he is from those that those that mine the natural tunnels here and seek the beauty in the natural state of this place. Weethas’ people are those that prefer geometrically precise mines and caves, and seek to add grandeur this place through the worked stone. Their tempers begin to flare as they suddenly seem angry with each other. Just a quickly one of the elders here gestures. That elder’s tattoos glow briefly and calm is restored.

Though calm now, both Ven and Weethas look expectantly at your group. Which do you pick?

Whichever you choose, either Ven or Weethas will lead you there. This will be about the size of the town of Jarlswolf. You will be able to rest there, with the expectation that you will return the next day. Think about what your character would like to do, see, or seek out there.

(I promise not to drag this part out. Matters there should be resolvable in a post or two unless there are character desires to do more.)

It appears that we will need to divide our group in half, with one half going in each direction. Neither group should be offended, and all of us should be safe. Might I suggest that Barratore, myself, Edson, and Lanliss go in one direction, while everyone else goes in the other. Splits the group up relatively evenly. Since Evaris, and likely Emrys would prefer the advanced engineering, I suggest that their group goes that way, and we go the other. I think that none of us should be in peril, and if we are, we have ways of attracting assistance.

“Yes, good. Buuuuut we mussssst discussss what muuuuuuust be done.”
They begin to talk low among themselves.

Brom, Lanliss and Edson have no opinion on which village to go to for rest. Emrys and Barratore are oddly silent.

Edson asks, “Does it matter? Does it matter what village we pick?"

Ven says, “Well sure it matters. Ours is better.”
“Nay,” responds Weethas, “Tis our lodgings you should seek.”

Velarin proposes that the group split up. Baslim says he would prefer the more orderly village. So it is decided that Barratore, Velarin, Edson and Lanliss go with Ven. Baslm, Evaris, Emrys and Brom accompany Weethas.

(Both places? Really? Alright.)

--------------------------
Those that go with Ven (Barratore, Velarin, Edson, Lanliss) travel for about 15 minutes past a few alcoves, caves and small settlements. Eventually, they arrive at a rather grand cavern, and it is clear from the sounds, sights and smells that this is a busy place. You see homes and shops. Folks here seem to use stone weapons and implements, curiously crafted as if of metal and just as strong. Some shops also sell glowing crystals, and other odd trinkets. The area seems to be without much order or direction, yet the people here, though a bit loud and demonstrative, all seem to get along.

The folk all look the same - mouths, like their nose and ears are little more than slits in their over-sized heads. They regard you with large, glittering gem-like eyes of varying hues. You see no women here, which seems odd.

You are paraded through town and Ven is proud to say that you chose him village to rest. You are quite the novelty, with many people asking where you are from and why you are here. You may respond however you wish. For questions about why you are here, Ven will dismissively say that you are on “council business.”

You pass what could be said to be farming areas of sorts. Tall mushrooms grow here, along with draping lichen-like plants that seem to have some sort of grain head. You see what look to be hairless rats as big as a man, and some winged bat-like creatures kept here domestically.

Eventually, you are brought to Ven’s house. You are shown to adequate quarters, and given a chance to freshen up. The food is really bad, but the beer is good. Shop as you wish, or retire to your lodgings. Ven will assign a couple of local youths to take you where you wish to go.

---------------------------
The group that accompanies Weethas (Baslm, Evaris, Emrys, Brom) soon finds that the natural tunnels and walls give way to straight, angular routes and openings. None of the walls here have undressed stone. After about 15 min of travel, you come to a very large space holding a large settlement. There is a great stone clock carved high up on the wall. The people here are courteous, and seem overly polite. You are quite the curiosity, looking very different from these folk, but noone seems to stare, and very few ask much beyond if you are well and enjoying your time here.

The folk are pleasant, but all look the same to you - mouths, like their nose and ears are little more than slits in their over-sized heads. They regard you with large, glittering gem-like eyes of varying hues. You see no women or children here. Sense Motive DC15:Highlight to display spoiler: { You do believe there people here belong to different “classes,” each seeming to have a defined purpose and standing relative to others.}

As you pass homes and shops, you note that everything seems to be where it belongs and have a purpose. Clothing, and occasional weapons and armor seem finely made. There is a dull stone-like look to the metal here, and they are impressed with the fine, shiny weapons and armor you possess. You see finely crafted figurines and knick-knacks as well. Shops sell all kinds of wares.

Eventually, you come to Weethas’ house. He directs you to clean, spartan quarters. You are give the chance to clean-up, rest, etc. The food here is pretty bad. You are offered an earthy wine, which is oddly good. You may walk about town, and Weethas will send a servitor with you as a guide.

A Man About Town - DM Mark

Ven’s Village - (Barratore, Velarin, Edson, Lanliss)

Velarin, Lanliss and Edson decide to cleanup a bit and rest and enjoy dinner. The food here is either bland or tastes metallic and minerally. It can’t be good for you. (Fort Save DC 10 or be sickened.)

Barratore has a bite of food (Fort Save DC 10 or be sickened,) and then says he is ready to hit the town. Ven had trouble finding a youth willing to escort the Minotaur around - he’s a rather intimidating figure here. Finally a young local named Tous agrees, after Ven agrees to pay him more. Barratore causes a bit fear and awe as he moves about - most consider him a beast or a demon. People seem particularly impressed that Tous seems to be in control of so frightening a creature.

As he looks about, he finds the food here is just as bad, though the locals seem to enjoy it. His gold and silver seem to be welcome currency. He comes across the following:

- Weapons made of stone that perform like metal. These function like standard steel items, but are non-conductive. They also look pretty cool. (Pricing is Woldian standard.)

- Crystals that glow with light varying from a candle (50 GP) to a torch (150 GP.)

- Potions in the form of a crushable crystal. Use requires crushing against the skin of a willing recipient. (Function and pricing are otherwise Woldian standard.)

- The local beer. (Standard wine ale pricing.)

- Local clothing, and household goods, and minor trinkets and knick-knacks. These are natural and rather organic looking, made of cloth, leather, stone or crystal. Stone or crystal items look as if grown into the shape of the items.

Eventually, Barratore can see that the crystals illuminating the place seem to dim a bit, and shops begin to close. What passes for tavern stay open, and there is a decent “night life” here. The youth seems eager to be about, and seems to strut a bit with this well-heeled monster in tow. However, he does at last suggest you return to Ven’s place to rest.

The rest there is peaceful. In the morning, everyone wakes to a low grinding sound. Breakfast is gross.
--------------------------

Weethas’ Village - (Baslm, Evaris, Emrys, Brom)
On the way to Weethas house, Ambassador Evaris revels in his newfound fame in this place, and he is greeted cautiously at first by these odd looking folk, for to them he is equally odd looking. These people are very polite, but very curious about this new comer. They seem to like new things.

At the house, Evaris, Emrys, Brom eat some of the food, and it’s pretty bad (Fort Save DC 10 or be sickened.) Baslim does not eat, and when offered some other things politely declines. This gets some puzzled looks from Weethas’ servants. The earthy wine is pretty good.

Brom heads out, and one of the servants is directed to accompany him. This servant is polite, but generally quiet. Brom is quite the curiosity, and a number of folks ask him what he is, where he is from, and why he is here. As he moves through the town, he can see that things here are very nicely carved and decorated. Things here seem to move in an orderly fashion, and the village seems well laid out.

As he looks about, he finds the food here is just as bad, though the locals seem to enjoy it. His gold and silver seem to be welcome currency. He will find a number of interesting sights, and the following to buy:

- Armor and weapons made from some sort of dull, dark grey metal. Pricing, function and limitations are the same as for normal metal items, but the metal cannot be identified. It has a unique look to it. (Pricing is Woldian standard.)

- Potions in syringes. These are injectable, single use items. The key difference is that injecting a potion in this way does not provoke an attack of opportunity. (PCs are limited to purchase of no more than 2 each. Pricing is Woldian standard)

- Mushroom wine. (Standard wine pricing.)

- Local clothing, and household goods, and minor trinkets and knick-knacks. Made of cloth, leather, metal or crystal. These tend to be highly worked and decorated, and are quite unusual.

Later in the evening, a large, low chime will sound, seeming to come from everywhere all at once. Shops and taverns all seem to close. The servant will inform Brom that this means it is time to retire and he leads Brom back.

In the morning, a large low chime seems to sound again, and folks begin to wake and stir in Weethas house. Breakfast is gross.

Ven and his household seem to feel badly that you don’t seem to like the food. They offer a few additional things, and there are a few items that are palatable. This would be a difficult place the party to stay for a long time.

Brom enjoys the sights of the town here. He wishes Barratore were here to see the architecture.[/i] He invites his host to join them. Their host makes a brave attempt, but the food is not to his liking.

Evaris casts Hero’s Feast, inviting Weethas and his household. Weethas is quite astonished that the cleric is able to conjure such a feat, along with table and chairs. He allows but a few of his people with sufficient standing to join. They find the ambrosial food and nectar-like beverage quite pleasant, and compliment Evaris for his taste. They say this is not unlike their food, and are puzzled that you enjoy this feast but not what they provided the night before.

Emrys is careful not to judge these people for their apparent caste system. He is quite glad for Evaris’ food.

Ah well, he does though, have enough for the simple dagger and keg of beer and that will have to do as a momento of the place. Perhaps after destroying the threat of the shadows he will have more coin and be able to pick up a few of those crystals

Barratore waves off Ven's fret on the food. "Don't worry friend, I've had to wash down horrible food before and it's not the first time he's thrown up all over." Barratore nods to himself and bares his teeth across the table at V, having been so diplomatic makes him feel pretty good. Maybe he should engage folks more often.

DM: Resting HP recovery?

DM Mark - Barratore recovers hit points as he normally would for a night's rest.

DM Damarr: After 8 hours of Rest, you recover 1 HP/level, and 1 point of ability damage for each ability score. Those Ropers did Str damage, so you recover 1 point of Str, and 26 HP (at level 13) after 8 hours of rest.

A Man About Town - DM Mark
Thursday July 6th, 2017 12:11:16 AM

While in the town, Barratore attempts to put the locals at ease with his large size and intimidating presence. That goes about as expected, but a few manage to maintian the composure long enough to sell him a dagger and some beer.

Velarin asks Barratore what he saw in the village. Barratore shares his perspective on this.

Brom Brom buys a greatsword, a dagger, and a barrel of wine. He shows the sword and dagger make of the unique metal to the others.

All seem ready to return to the council of strange men they met the day before.

After a good night’s sleep and a Hero’s Feast, Baslm, Evaris, Emrys, and Brom leave. Soon they meet up with Barratore, Velarin, Edson, and Lanliss (who did not partake of the feast.)

Led by Weethas and Ven, you all wind along the dimly glowing tunnel. Sense Motive 22 Highlight to display spoiler: {- Weethas and Ven seem unusually quiet and are nervous about something.}
You’re not sure if it is the same one you were in before. Eventually you reach the strange group of men you spoke with before. As before, they are seated upon 6 cushions, but before them are 8 others, one rather large. In the middle is a clay pot, this time with a bunch of clay cups. They gesture for you to sit.

“Weeeeeeeee are glad you are here.”

In the same stilted voices, they finish each others’ sentences, relating the following.

The tiny sword you carry acts as a focus for Divination magics between the two worlds. This allowed them to Scry the party and they believe it led you here. They suggest that Evaris put the sword necklace around his neck. They believe that doing so will reveal it’s powers in this place. Does Evaris put on the tiny sword necklace?

They previously told you that a spirit of discord has come to this place, eventually causing a civil war among the people here. They have divined that this spirit is a powerful being that has come to this realm, and means harm to both your worlds. They do not know his name, but they know his intent.

“Aaaaand we thiiiiiiiiiiink we can…”
“Thwart it, butttttttt…”
“Only wiiiiiith yourrrrrr help.”
“Will you help?”
“Help.”
“Help.”
“Help.”

Through their divinations, they have also learned other names. They assume you know of Marteus - he is somehow involved. But there are other names they did not recognize - Blast and Skalipy. They ask if these names mean something to you?

As you discuss, they pour some tan colored liquid form the pot into cups for you. They had you the cups. Do you drink?

"That what doesn't kill ya and all" he says before taking a drink from the cup.

Evaris notes to himself that their hosts seem unusually nervous, and mentally prepares himself for an ambush.

When the sword is discussed, Evaris says, "I will gladly wear it if you like, but are we sure I'm the right person to do it? Emrys is more skilled with Divination magic than I am; perhaps he should be the one to wear it. And Velarin is a mage rather than a priest; perhaps he is a better choice."

However, if Evaris proves to be the best person to wear the sword--or if it seems to make no difference--he places it around his neck.

"I am not familiar with Blast or Skalipy," he tells the council.

He accepts a cup and takes only a sip, hoping that the Heroes' Feast will be enough of a boost to ward off any ill effects.

Barratore exchanges some stories with Brom and promptly suggests that once they get back home they compare the wine and beer. He also shows him the sweet stone-metal dagger he bought.

Barratore sits on a cushion next to Brom and takes a cup. The minotaur sniffs it and then, assuming it did not curdle his snout, he throws it back in a single shot

Barratore is not overly keen about slapping a do-hicky thing-a-ma-gig about his clerics neck and looks to Emrys, "Can you get it off if need be?"

A random thought comes out of Barratores mouth, "Anyone think that what they been talking about here with the crystals sound alot like the whole Glitterox volcano thing in the Vale?"

Barratore turns his attention back to the council

On the way there, Lanliss noticed that Ven and Weethas seem nervous, and asked them about this.

“Nervous? I’m not nervous. Why would I be nervous? Nuthin to be nervous about, no sir. How bout you Weethas?”
“Be you not afraid Ven? In sooth, I knoweth the elders fear something, and they has't sought thee as heros cometh in this their hour of need. I am afeared of what may come.”
“Okay, maybe I’m a little nervous about that part.”
------------------------------
Now that you are with the elders, the group sits with them. No one seems to know the names they mention. The elders dismiss Ven and Weethas who wish you well, and look a bit relieved to go.

Evaris says that perhaps Emrys should wear the sword, and Emrys does. Emrys Highlight to display spoiler: {Within this pocket dimension of the Krystal Palace, 1/day, it can become a +3 Vorpal Greatsword for one minute (10 consecutive rounds). When activated, it sizes for its owner, and the owner has proficiency "Greatsword" while wielding the necklace.}

Edson wants nothing to do with the drink they offer, remembering his adventure with dinner the night before. Emrys and Velarin also do not try the proffered drink. Brom, Lanliss, Evaris, Barratore and Baslim all drink:Highlight to display spoiler: {Mildly alcoholic, it tastes earthy and seems to sharpen the drinkers wits (gives +4 Wisdom and Wisdom skill checks for 10 minutes [Owl’s Wisdom CL10]).}

“But some some some do…”

“Thhhhheyyy must…”
“Trust.”
“Just as weeeee must…”
“Trust...”
“Them.”

The cups still sit before Edson, Emrys and Velarin. Barratore and Baslim mention Glitterox.

In their same stilted fashion, finishing each others’ sentences, these strange men explain:

The Krystal Palace is not Glitterox, but it does connect there. Glitterox is a holy place for us. During the year we mine ore here, and once a year some of the best ore is taken and sacrificed inside the mountain. As Glitterox erupts, the offering is accepted and disappears. This ensure the health of our people for the coming year and gives life to what you call your Cinnamon Valley.

We take a risk in telling you this. The Sarenbeth do not want your people to know of this connection. They fear your people would interfere with this process if they knew, they would seek the glitter for themselves if they knew of this. But these are not normal times.

A darkness has come to the Krystal Palace that threatens both our people. A Shadow Lord and his shadows control the connection to Glitterox. They plant seeds of doubt and a spirit of discord among our people, and each group blames the other. The Shadows are slowly growing in strength, and we cannot hold them back much longer. We fear that not only might we be over come, but we fear they may seek to have Glitterox to erupt shadows upon your land instead of the glitter that gives life.

These shadows can be defeated. We have poured our life energy into a pure Krystal. If it can be sacrificed in Glitterox it should purge the Shadows from the Krystal Palace, But alas even as we crafted this weapon, the shadows have grown, and we no longer have the the strength to get through the Shadow Lord’s army.

I...see...you - DM Mark
Monday July 10th, 2017 1:55:40 AM

The six elders refer to a Shadow Lord, the threat he poses, and their need for help from the heros.

Barratore, Edson, and Brom and perk up, and seem excited about the prospect of a fight. Lanliss is also in agreement, as it seem it threatens the Wold as well as this pocket dimension.

Velarin is ready to help. Thinking about what these creatures had said, he has a vague recollection of a Ogre named Garth having mentioned someone named Skalipy. He also recalls a religious reference to a cleric of Marteus named Skalipy. Not sure what Blast refers to.

Baslim however has a few questions: “Why do the Shadow Lord and his minions sow doubt and discord? Do they do this purposefully, or is it just their proximity to you people? How are they gaining in strength? Are they feeding off of the connection to Glitterox? Is this Shadow Lord in service to a higher power?"

These six seated on cushions like the heros seem to cock their heads in unison to the quesions. They offer the following in their same stilted fashion, finishing each other's’ sentences.

We do not know why this Shadow Lord seeks to sow doubt and discord, but we think he desires to rule here. As sense a hunger for power and control. We have also divined that her serves a god called Marteus.

Right now, this Shadow Lord and his minions are preventing us offering our sacrifice of glitter to Glitterox.

We are glad you have agreed to help us, helping your people as well. As we said, we have crafted a pure Heart Krystal with some of our life energy. This artifact is now the physical personification of the life of this place. If the Shadow Lord should capture it, everything in Krystal Palace will succumb to his shadows, and it will turn into a world of darkness. You must place the Heart Krystal on the Altar in the center of Glitterox. This should cleanse the shadows from the land. We think.

One of them rises as the other five turn in unison, to watch him, still sitting. He moves to a wall behind them and as he passes his hand across the wall, some of the stone melts away and there is a glowing crystal there. But this one does not glow orange like the others here - this glows with a soft, white light.

As he steps forward to hand it to you, he suddenly stops. All six are still - one standing and the others sitting. One of the Elders grunts as if in pain and his eyes turn jet black. “I...see...you” he intones in a sneering voice, quite different from the way you heard them speak before.

As one of the elders’ eyes turn black and he speaks, the party changes tactics, and start by standing up from their cushions on the floor.

Velarin believes this is the Shadow Lord, and suggests Protection from Evil is in order. He casts it on himself hoping another can cast it on the group.

Barratore responds, drinking a Magic Circle Against Evil potion. As he speaks to the the elder with the black eyes, the minotaur also steps up to him to affect him with the protective spell.

Emrys offers the sword necklace to another that could perhaps better use a greatsword of such power, even if it only lasts 10 minutes. He shares with the others that within this pocket dimension, it can become a +3 Vorpal Greatsword for one minute (10 consecutive rounds) for the wearer once per day. When activated, it sizes for its owner, and the owner has proficiency "Greatsword" while wielding the necklace.

Edson looks about for shadows to hide in, and sees plenty. There are multiple crystals mostly ocher colored stone with red glittery specks and fist-sized orange stones that give off a orange, glowing light. The light in here is dim light.

Lanliss sighs and also tries to blend into the shadows.

Brom is spoiling for a fight but stays his hand. Barely.

Baslim waits to see if the Barratore’s protection is effective.

Evaris calmly responds to the elder, asking what he wants.

The elder with the black eyes remains seated and responds, contempt in his voice. The others sit quietly, except for the one with the Heart Krystal who is standing.

“What do I want? What do I want? I want what you ultimately want - the betterment and perfection of your races, and a little place to call my own. The people in your land have grown soft and weak, dependant on Glitterox like a drug to maintain their soft lives. Marteus offers a better way, a stronger way. Surely the strong such as you can understand this.

“The race that lives in this place is irrelevant - a Sarenbeth abomination. They will serve me or be swept away. Join me and rule.”

He gestures and an area of the back wall turns to a misty grey swirl. And then Brom gets his wish.

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?

Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)

WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?

The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

As the shadows pour forth and attack, Velarin unleashes a wicked Fireball affecting 10 of them, 6 of which die instantly. He tells his friends to stay close. (The first fours saved.)

Barratore takes a 5’ step and attacks. The shadows elude his attacks. (Please also take into account that, though he has reach, bodies between you and your adversary provide a +4 to their AC or soft cover.)

Emrys pulls out a quicken rod, and casts Fear as a swift action. While this does not provoke attacks of opportunity, he then moves back 10’ which does provoke attacks from the three shadow animals in front of him. All three hit him, the third blow dealing a critical hit! The beautiful bard takes 13, 8 and 23 points of damage, as well as 4 points of Dexterity damage (I’m pretty sure a crit doubles ability damage as well.) Wow. Then the bard casts Good Hope, granting his friends a magic boon. (I gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed you quickened the first spell. If not, casting it would provoke those attacks probably spoiling the Fear spell.)

Lanliss move swiftly to the elder with the Heart Krystal and take it from him with little resistance. The elder remains still.

Edson moves next to where Velarin was, and strikes from the shadows of the shadow animals, that was missed by the fire. He finds that between this dim light and these creatures ability to blend into the shadows, they have concealment which negates sneak attack damage.

Evaris drops a Flame Strike to best effect, killing 4 more, three of which were already burned by Velarin.

Brom lashes out at adversaries near him, but in the shadows and dim light, his swings go wide.

Baslim releases a Holy Smite where it will do the most damage, focusing on those not hurt by the fire. He downs one more, but two make their saves and take 9 damage each (yes, 9 is correct here.)

11 shadow animals lay dead, with two injured. And then 12 more pour forth as the grey mist on the wall vanishes. They are clever, with most avoiding attacks as they move in.

One attacks Barratore and misses. (Barratore gets an AOO on this as it moves in.)
Three attack Brom and miss. (Barratore gets an AOO on one of these as it moves in if he can make another AOO.)
Two hit Baslim for 13 and 14 damage, as well as the loss of 2 more Dexterity.
The two injured creatures snap at Edson, but both miss the rogue.

The elder with the black eyes laughs, “Ha! You had your chance to join me, but I am merciful. Stop this fight and join me for the betterment of your people. You will win this fight, and perhaps the next, but you will eventually fall if you oppose me.

“There is wealth here you know, wealth that I can share. Help be win this place and strengthen the Cinnamon Valley. You could rule there, just as I will rule here. We can be partners in a way! He he, oh yes, partners. Marteus would welcome strong ones such as you. Except for that bard - he looks a little soft to me. Bards usually are.”

As he speaks he moves over to Lanliss and attempts to grab the Heart Krystal, but fails. His move may provoke an AOO from Barratore and Emrys, if Emrys is armed.

Edson steps 5’ to move next to Shepheard Baslim to flank, but there is no one to flank with. Nonetheless he hits twice for a total of 6 damage.

Velarin urges caution, anticipating troubles beyond those at hand. Then he releases a fireball into the shadow animals. Two die.

Barratore strikes one of the incoming shadow animals, and then focuses his attention on the elder whose eyes turned black. He crumples in a heap.

Emrys taunts the black-eyed elder who fails to respond, because, you know, Barratore. Then he feigns a necromantic spell as he heals himself.

Evaris casts Holy Smite on the creatures, one more drops, though it does not do as much damage as he hoped.

Brom attacks, and two more drop.

Three attack Brom and miss.
Two attack Baslim and hit for 12 and 15 points, as well as 2 more dexterity damage.

Velarin, not wanting to use all his spells in this foray, knowing what probably lays ahead, takes a 5' step to AI10 and tries to assist by using his intellect to call his thoughts on battle tactics to speed things along. With Brom and Barratore fresh as daisy's, and the rest having the ability to heal themselves and others, this shouldn't last long.

"Brom, if you make a 5' step to the right, and kill your man, Barratore can move in and kill some more, and then the two of you can just move forward as if you were plowing the road. Everyone else, don't waste any big spells, we will likely need them. Low level healing can handle what problems we have now if all the healers work together on each other.

Barratore strikes one near him, killing the creature. Then he hits and injured one, killing that too.

Brom lashes out, killing three in front of him.

Evaris heals the badly injured Baslim.

Baslim then brings up a protective wall of stone, sealing off a shadow creature and perhaps others that may come after. Smooth, featureless grey stone bisects the chamber, notably different than the crystal speckled orange stone of this place.

Two shadow creature still threaten the party. One eyes the minotaur goes for the smaller opponent, moving 5’ to attack Brom. It misses.

The other attacks Edson, and misses the quick rogue.

The elders move as one coming out of a trance. They stare down at the prone elder. They turn him over and you can see that his gem-like eyes are no longer black.

“Oh, was that…?”
“Yes, the Shadow Lord.”
“He caught us while we were joined.”
“Yerkuk is dead.”
“Oh no, Yerkuk.”
“Yes, I will miss his sense of humor. But ...not his cooking."
"The Shadow Lord will likely be back.”
"Yes, we haven't much time."

They no longe speak in that strange, stilted fashion.

Here is your map. (Move your characters as you see fit. I will create a new tab each round to keep track of the battle. The numbers on the map represent damaged shadow creatures - that seemed easier.)

V ignores his injury for now, and moves to the elders, expecting that the others will make quick work of the two remaining shadows. Speaking to the elders as the battle wraps up behind him, fully confident in the abilities of his companions... "What is our next step? That was likely just a test with his lesser forces to see what we were capable of, and to see if he could pull off a quick snatch and run with the crystal. Any useful information you have possibly withheld should be furnished now, and our direction of travel laid before us. We will take a few moments to heal our injuries, and be ready to move."
