DM RobC - "Armand, you think they are lying about something?" Thursday July 6th, 2017 7:29:41 AM
The concensus is reached that the party should continue on their way to Plateau City with these refugees in tow.
There is also the suspicion that Gaston may be behind this. The party really are a paranoid lot. Of course, it's not paranoia if he really is after them.
-------------------
The rest of the journey to Plateau City is quiet. The refugees continue to thank the party for their involvement. You even overhear whisper of "saviors" and "Domi's heroes". Any question you ask is answered honestly, and there is no sense of misgiving. They truly are good, honest people who are grateful for what you have for them.
Finally, Plateau City can be seen in the distance.
Ah Plateau City, the jewel of the continent of Yrth, and the largest city in the entire Elennian peninsula. Built atop the tallest of the concentric offset plateaus of land that form new Elenna, it’s a sight to behold. Rising 15,000 feet above the wine country of the second plateau it is often shaded in clouds, what's even more impressive is the huge waterfall turning to mist off it’s side, as the endless river which wells up out of the center of the city flows over the side. Looking at it you are in awe, if not for the wonders of magic such a large and vibrant city could not exist, the effort just to feed the people would be too great to be economical. On the other hand, you would need strong magic to take the city. They hold the ultimate high ground. In the sun you can see the glint of many windows and lookout glasses on the walls. The view must be outstanding.
------------------- Please specify marching orders, how you wish to approach the city, and so on
Please also accept my apologies for the extended absence of a DM post. I'll make sure you get 5 DM posts a week from now.

While traveling Armand does what he can to aid the travelers, casting Create Water and Create Food and Water (x3 per day). When the people thank Domi, he just nods and says "Gargul has determined today is not your day to join him."
Armand stares in wonder at the city. He has never seen anything so grand....so imposing. "Are those grapes growing on the second level? There are no wine country tours right now. We need to get these people in and settled and then see the magistrate. Anyone know who we should see about refugee housing?"
Armand will take the lead and try to be diplomatic about explaining things to the gate person(s). Diplomacy 16 (d20+10)
Apparently Armand is still a little flustered by the imposing size of the city.

With Armand creating food and drink for everyone, Beordir tucks his stone into his backpack so as to draw less attention to it.
As the journey gets closer to Plateau City, Beordir listens to the excitement for the caravan. While he asks around about what to expect, not quite prepared his for seeing the actual city. It' lucky his horse was not so impressed, because it was some time before Beordir attended to the reins.

Atlas takes his standard place up front when marching. Any time they stop he goes about supporting Armand as much as he can.
As they approach Plateau City he feels a slight sense of happiness at being close to home. Plateau City is always grand, but the Tree is what he considers a wonder, not a bustling city.
Being his homeland, he tries to help Armand at the gate. However, this whole Gaston thing still has him a bit on edge. Hopefully he didn't hurt too much!
DM RobC - "Perhaps I can find a bit of new magic while we're here" Friday July 7th, 2017 11:52:42 AM Plateau City is a marvel to behold, and the party are suitably impressed.
Armand considers who to speak to about refugee housing, Pym sings a tune and Mack brings up the rear.
Beordir and Mack consider purchasing some magical items here. Given the size of the city, the problem won't be finding magical items - it will be finding the party again should they get separated!
If we don't stick with our usual marching order, I tend to drift towards the back. ;) I mostly stay quiet, and just take it all in.
The entrance to the city at the base of the plateau is lined with traders, visitors and teamsters on their way to do business. There is a bustling service industry at the base that offers refreshments, places to camp, wares and any other service a traveller might need while waiting to enter the city. Armand suspects this would be the perfect place to accommodate the refugees.
Unarmed functionaries man the access point, checking papers, conducting interviews, keeping the peace and directing traffic. They keep the steady line moving.

They are absolutely Bracers of Armor. All 6 of them :)
The party are arriving late morning, and Armand has had time to adjust his spell list that morning should he choose.
Armand tries his luck engaging one of the functionaries, with the rest of the pary backing him up.
The man the party approach holds up his hand as he sees the group approaching
"Sorry folks, you're going to have to stay in the queue before we can admit you"
Armand then goes on to explain about the refugees and the giants. The man's attitude changes almost immediately. "Of course! Plateau City, the greatest in New Elenna, will always care for the wellbeing of others and grant refuge to those who ask" He raises a hand in the air gesturing over towards one of the camps. When noone responds he whistles loudly "Treyvan! TREYVAN! Yeah, can you see that these people get some clean clothes, a place to sleep and some warm food?"
Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {This man does seem genuinely concerned for the welfare of the refugees. He also seems extremely proud of Plateau City and his affiliation with it.}
"Treyvan", or at least a bearded man wearing a tunic with the insignia of Plateau City, walks over to the wagon and begins shaking hands. You can see him gesture towards some other caravans and indicates for the refugees to pull up there.
The functionary almost forgets about the mention of Giants "One of the hazards of living so far from civilization I suppose. They will be safe here, as will you. The walls of Plateau City will stand for generations to come"
Miles smiles now that the party have finally reached their destination. "It is completely at your discretion as to what you do now. I'm sure I could find you some lodging suiting your status. If we hurry, I know this great little tavern that we could be at by lunch. The pork there is amazing! Or if you want to see the magistrate I could take you there first. There's this fantastic stall on the way that sells chicken on skewers. They put some sort of spicy glaze on it."
"But, if you'd rather travel a little more quickly I do have one of these" Miles pulls a gold whistle from his pocket. Once we get inside it will help you, or us, get wherever you want to go"[/b]
The queue to get into Plateau City doesn't seem too long. There are perhaps a dozen people ahead of the party.

Atlas is dead set certain that Gaston has something planned for the party. He can feel it in his bones.
Armand questions whether the horses will be necessary. Miles answers "Well, you can use horses if you choose. But with the size of the city and all the people around you might find the whistle gets you where you want to go sooner. Unfortunately we need to be within the city walls for it to work"
Beordir and Osul are in agreement that the magistrate is a reasonable first stop.
Miles gratefully accepts the waybread from Beordir and starts eating it "Ahh, this will tide me over until we get to a real tavern"
The queue to enter Plateau City is moving quite well. Ahead of you stand an elf man and a half elf woman, and they don't look particularly happy. They are talking to each in hushed voices, but you could swear you heard them say "Gaston".

WHAT IS NET NEUTRALITY?
Net neutrality is the basic principle that protects our free speech on the Internet. "Title II" of the Communications Act is what provides the legal foundation for net neutrality and prevents Internet Service Providers like Comcast, Verizon, and AT&T from slowing down and blocking websites, or charging apps and sites extra fees to reach an audience (which they then pass along to consumers.)
WHY IS NET NEUTRALITY IMPORTANT?
The Internet has thrived precisely because of net neutrality. It's what makes it so vibrant and innovative—a place for creativity, free expression, and exchange of ideas. Without net neutrality, the Internet will become more like Cable TV, where the content you see is what your provider puts in front of you.

As Armand sidles closer to him, Nat abruptly cuts off the conversation. He faces the man with a soft, casual smile. "Can't complain, really. They're getting through the line at a fair pace." The half-elf extends a hand, bristles slightly as he notices the guards letting another traveller inside, and shifts a couple of steps so that he doesn't leave a gap. The group edge ever closer to the front of the queue until there is only one group ahead of them.
Pym plays a melody to help people relax a little on the entrance to Plateau. Looking around you can see people start smiling as their cares ease away.
Miles stands quietly eating bread and tapping his feet to Pym's tune.
Waiting in line isn't for Beordir. He stands by the wall to the city and looks out on the crowd. Everyone is behaving in an orderly fashion, and perhaps surprisingly, everyone looks to be in a good mood. The functionaries here look to have a relatively easy job compared to guards in other towns.
Armand asks those ahead of him how long it will take to get through, and find himself talking to Nathaniel.
It seems the people ahead of the party share a common goal. Nathaniel talks quietly with Elyngael. He is up for a Gaston hunt, but hopes the rogue isn't lying too low. Elyngael too has been pursuing his prey - Gaston - for quite some time. If he is here, she will find him.
Atlas voices his desire - that Gaston is HIS. Anyone who takes Gaston's head will lose theirs.
Everyone has lost something to Gaston. Some more than others. Perhaps there's an opportunity to discuss this common ground?

Elyngael gives Nat one final warning. Refer to Khan as 'puss' and she would not be responsible for whatever results. She then introduces herself to the party. She might be the only one who isn't happy to see Gaston imprisoned. How can she see he gets what's coming to him if he is safely locked away?
Nathaniel chuckles loudly at the warning given. He explains the number of stories heard, as well as his desire to see Gaston get what he truly deserves.
Beordir stays the strong silent type whilst dwelling on the nature of Atlas.
Osul greets the Nathaniel and Elyngael before turning to Miles "Well, I guess every bit of evidence would help. I was only sent to summon the Wardens, but I'm guessing the more the merrier. It couldn't hurt for more people to testify at what type of individual Gaston is. Although I'm getting a distinct idea from the past days of travel with you!"
Finally the party reach the head of the line. A young private man with a clip board meets you and quizzes you as to your business in the city. Names: Point of origin? Business in the city? How long are you planning to stay? Are you armed? If so, all weapons are under a peace bond while in Plateau city. Use of melee weapons, distance weapons, Martial magicks or magic items while in the city proper are prohibited by law, unless used in defence of yourself or another. Are you carrying contraband? The questions go on, but in the end he hands you a tickets with your names on them.
As you get to the front of the line a rather haggard looking Mage scans you with a pair of spectacles, and motions you past the gates and wall.
Past the post at the very foot of the plateau awaits every form of Magical taxi service that Plateau City has to offer. Hippogriffs, griffons, magical carpet rides, balloons on tether, and 5 robed men standing around a circle laid in tile. In the center of the circle is an armored cart with hard looking men, armed and standing around it. The five robed men raise their hands and the there is a flash as the cart disappears. There is a sign behind the robed men. Selpenir’s Teleportation service, when it really needs to get there without covering the distance in between. Weight is not an issue, but volume is.
All are ready to transport a group from the entrance to any part of Plateau City they desire.

Beordir listened to the city rules carefully. Then he took some cord out of his pouch and bound his rapier and dagger into their scabbards. He answered the questions as minimally as he could, then followed the mage through the door.
Mack is jumping up and down to ride a griffon. While Beordir is curious as well, he recalls the wild griffon's ferocity and eyes the mounts cautiously. "Alas, I did not consider Feather Fall today. I'll have to add that while we are here."
He looks at the magic carpets and strides over there to ask for prices.

Atlas laments not being able to ride a griffon, what with Mile's Magical Whistle. Amrand too is curious about this whistle. Miles grins in response "Well, my good friends... Is it too soon in the relationship for me to call one of you my best friend? Nevermind. The whistle simply summons a form of transportation to wherever you may be in Plateau. Since we are already at a transportation hub, the whistle would be useless. How would you prefer to travel from here? I've tried them all. Each one is great, although I'm personally not a fan of teleportation. Nothing beats the feel of the air in your face while flying above the city"
Mack doesn't give it a second thought. I wanna ride the griffons! The proprietor smiles broadly on seeing his next customer "Welcome to Plateau City, weary travellers! Why, for just 20gp we can fly your group to anywhere you want to go in Plateau City"
The griffons look well fed and cared for. There are no bridles, whips or shackles to be seen. They look to be here on their own accord.
As to the mounts, Miles has the answer "Well, for mounts I would suggest the teleportation service. If you're looking to stable them, I'd suggest the Hindquarter or Dragon Quarter. The Hindquarter is a little cheaper, but the people who call that area home are your decent, hard working, honest folk. The Dragon Quarter is one of the most famous places in all the Wold. The WLA, the Catacombs and the Star Mages guild are all based there. It might cost a little more to stable a horse, but hundreds of adventuring groups from all over the Wold can often be found in the area."
Beordir dutifully obeys the peace bond, drawing nods from those nearby. He's interested in the griffons, but wants to weigh up his options. A magic carpet ride will set a person back 25gp, but "guarantees" a smoother flight
Elyngael considers her options. "Well, we're not going to a court per se. That is, I'm taking you all to the magistrates office where someone will take a written statement. After that you are free to explore Plateau City to your hearts content. You could even go visit that friend of yours behind bars"
Osul confirms this. Just meeting with a pencil-pusher of some kind, and not in a court room.
Pym eyes the crowd to see who is enjoying his performance. It was easy to tell outside the gate, but inside there is much more hustle as people look for the transportation that suits their needs.
What transportation do the party choose? Do they want to take different modes? Do they wish to go give their testimony straight away? Do they want to do some shopping? Get a meal? Check into a tavern? Plateau City is open for business!

The party still aren't quite sure how they want to travel.
Mack is certain he wants to take a griffon. Pym doesn't seem to mind. Atlas is also ready for a griffon flight. Osul goes for a carpet Beordir also want a carpet ride. Armand is a little concerned for the mounts. As mentioned though, mounts can travel via the teleportation service. Elyngael looks to prefer riding to the destination herself.
Miles looks to answer any questions the party have asked. "The Hindquarter is in the north east corner of the city. Riding through the crowds from here to the Hindquarter? An hour, maybe two? Flying will have you these inside of 30 minutes. Teleportation is instant, obviously.
"The courthouse is in the Merchant Quarter. It's at the far south of Plateau City. Practically the opposite side of Plateau City."
-------------------------
Through various forms of transportation the party head for the Hindquarter.
Mack and Atlas fly on the backs of griffons. The magnificent creatures are almost playful as they move about with the air currents. It isn't a smooth journey, but the griffons have done this job for long enough to know how to keep a passenger aboard. There are times though that the bank so hard that you fear you will fall.
Osul and Beordir settle for a magic carpet ride. The journey is remarkably stable. A person could drink from a mug whilst riding on the carpet and not spill a drop.
Pym and Armand give the teleportation service a try, taking the mounts with them. The mounts are reduced in size and after stating your destination and stepping inside the circle you are all magically and instantly transported to the Hindquarter.
Elyngael and Nathaniel opt for the ride. Miles volunteers to act as guide to ensure they make it to their destination. At ground level they can see the hustle and bustle of Plateau City. All the noble races of the Wold can be seen going about their business.
-------------------------
At one point or another, all of the party arrive in the Hindquarter. "We should make our way to Cavalier Way. That's where the best lodging can be found" Miles acts as guide, steering the party northwards "The Adventurer's Repose is a good place. I'll take you there".
The narrow streets are covered with uneven cobblestones that make a 'click' 'clock' sound as the shod horses step on them.
The people in this district are the working class. Their clothes are quite plain, the men quite muscular and covered in dirt, and the women dressed modestly. Men moving wooden barrels onto a wagon, servant women washing clothes that they likely couldn't afford with a years worth of wages, a blacksmith fashioning a candelabra. All are busy. Adjoining the blacksmiths can be seen a simple stable.
There are glances towards the party and nods of acknowledgement but noone goes out of their way.
Ahead you can see your destination. A wooden sign hanging over the doorway declares "The Adventurer's Repose".
It is mid afternoon.

DM RobC - "What do you have to offer?" Tuesday July 18th, 2017 7:40:30 AM
The party try a number of things.
Despite being a beast of transport, the griffon still looks proud as Atlas thanks it for its service.
Mack can finally tick 'griffon ride' off his bucket list.
He starts going around to the people nearby and offering them a gold piece here and there. Most people look confused as he hands them a coin. Several insist that Mack takes something in return. He ends up with a linen shirt, a metal mug, a bar of soap, and a lamp.
Armand offers a word of caution. It's true - as the largest city in New Elnna, thieves guilds are well represented. Of course, there are just as many nobles that are considered soft targets.
Osul and Elyngael are the first to enter the tavern. At Elyngael's request one of the barmaids fetched the innkeeper: a balding man with a handlebar moustache. He wipes the sweat from his brow and smiles at the request of rooms. "5 silver pieces a room, and we have 5 available right now. All have clean sheets and fresh pitchers of water. And if you tell Bert down the way that you're staying here he'll stable your horses for 2 silver a day"
He apologises for not having any messages for Elyngael, however she has only just arrived in town. It will take time or word to spread that this is the Inn she is staying at. She hands the innkeeper a gold coin for his troubles. "Bless you, miss. I'll see to it that some fresh flowers are brought to your room. If there's anything else we can do to make your stay memorable, just say the word. Would you like me to send an errand boy to some of the other inns? They may have letters for you?"
Miles sits down at a table and orders some roast meat, bread, fruit, and ale.
---------------------------------------
With the party checked in, and Miles well fed, he escorts the party to the Law Clerk
The prosecuting attorney’s office - Bastion House - is located in the Merchant quarter, on the corner of Flail trail and Were way. The house is an old brownstone building that has a look of age and history about it. But it has been taken care of and while old, it is in no way shabby or decrepit. It is a split level design with a square block lower level of 2 stories and a 3 story back building that splays out to the sides
Two armed half-orc guards at the main entrance check visitors in and out.
Miles boldly steps forward "Witnesses for the clerk" he declares as he moves past the guards.
One of the guards smiles as he stands aside "Looks like these ones caused you less trouble than the last lot, Miles. You still have all your clothes intact"
With Miles walking ahead you can't tell his reaction.
Inside the interior is high vaulted tiled ceilings painted a pristine white. The tiles are gilded and frescoed to create a pleasing pattern of geometric designs. The floors are wood so dark it’s almost black. They are well polished and in good repair but you can see that the feet of countless visitors have worn a path in the wood. The whole place has that 'old' smell.
The walls contain signage to point the traveller where he needs to go but also works of art from local artists, scenes of the History of Plateau City, and portraits of notable figures. Disbursed evenly along the walls are tall doors of the same wood as the floors.
Miles guides the party to Door 2A. Depositions. On entering you find a bespectacled elven secretary in nice clothes behind an old wooden desk. The desk is exceptionally neat with a well stack of paper on one side. "Witness for the Gaston Case" Miles calls as he takes a seat by the door.
The woman smiles briefly as she stands "I'll tell him you're here. Wait here please" She shuffles off to go find the clerk.

Armand pauses to ask the guards what case Miles was working 'last time'. The guard seems pretty relaxed and chuckles "Short version? He was sent to bring back a guy who was, what's the polite way to say this, in a house of ill-repute. The ladies there weren't happy to see the guy leave so tried to get Miles to stay. Against his will I'm told" The guards laugh to themselves.
Once in the office Armand then asks Miles some questions about the current case as well as his last one. "I think I've told you everything I know. He's locked up, you've been asked to provide testimony, yada yada yada, he will likely be thrown into a dungeon or executed. Depends on the judges mood I guess." Miles explains as he settles into the chair "As for the last case, it was nothing. Please everyone, I know this isn't ideal, but lets stick together until we are done with this duty at a minimum. If I had my way I wouldn't have us split up at all on this trip. It is too convenient for Gaston's cronies to pick us off one by one. If you think that all this talk by Miles means that Gaston is truly finished then you don't know the man. Even if he is going to be executed, he'll seek our destruction until his dying breath and maybe even beyond."
Atlas hopes that his plea to the group works. "Mack, if anything fishy happens in there yell as loud as you can and we'll be there in a flash."
After Mack heads in Atlas says, "I'll go last unless there are any objections."

He turns to the clerk and Miles."Wait a minute. Shouldn't we have legal counsel? We wouldn't want to say anything that could me misconstrued.
He turns to the group and tries to get them into a private huddle. "This is why we need a secret code language or something. I mean what Atlas said makes sense. Gaston is a manipulative octopus with tentacles of slimy power everywhere. It just occurred to me, how do we know we're giving deposition against Gaston and not deposition against ourselves in a case that Gaston has worked up to imprison us? Also what do we know about this prosecutor? Can he be bought for enough money, what's his reputation in town? I think we either need to get someone we trust as legal counsel or claim that different party members are legal counsel for the other, that way at least 2 of us are always present. Pym and Beodir have had no dealings with Gaston, they could act as counsel."
Armand sticks his head up from the huddle and looks around. "Say where's that Nat guy?"

When Armand expresses concern, Beordir rejoins the conversation, "I have not been involved with him. I could sit in on the depositions, perhaps even report what is being asked...if you trust me."

We can tell them it's already into the afternoon, and if they are going to take us one at time this could take awhile. Then we can come back in the morning."
DM RobC - "I'll go first!!!" Thursday July 20th, 2017 8:27:18 AM Mack volunteers to be interviewed first, before being grabbed my Armand and pulled back into a huddle
The secretary looks confused until Miles stands up "It's ok. They're just a little paranoid is all. You get used to it. Say, is there any place in here to get some food?"
The party privately discuss their fear of being separated. What to do? Do they have to be separated? Can they go in pairs? Do they need legal counsel? Things are always so much easier on the battlefield, but this, this is a whole different arena entirely.
The delay and whispers is enough to get clerks attention. The law clerk is an elderly looking man with very short grey hair circling a growing bald spot atop his head. He wears a collarless blue shirt, buttoned all the way to his wrinkly neck. His small eyes look somewhat larger than normal through the thin rimmed glasses he wears, and he purses his lips with some regularity. "Well? I don't have all day? Which of you will be first? Oh, I see... " The old man chuckles "Well, I'll be in here when you're ready"

Atlas concedes, but not before taking a look inside the room before Mack enters.
After Mack heads in, Atlas takes a moment to sit down next to Beordir, pulls his knees up and rests his forearms on them. He doesn't look directly at Beordir, instead he just casually looks around the room as he begins to talk. "You know that I know you can take care of yourself, and we all trust you with our lives." He pauses, then says, "Is there something else bugging you? Maybe I'm being overly cautious with all this Gaston stuff, but I would rather be safe than sorry. Do you not agree with that approach?"

DM RobC - "I'll go first!!!" Friday July 21st, 2017 9:34:38 PM Atlas escorts Mack to the room and has a peek inside at the same time, as does Elyngael.
Armand is concerned by the clerk. What was he inferring? Best guess is that he finds it amusing that noone in a heavily armed party dare to enter his small office. A legal office in a highly guarded town occupied by one little old man.
The only exit that looks obvious to Armand is the way the party came. There may be another in the clerk's office, perhaps even a window.
Beordir has no intention of staying behind, and pushes his way into the room to stay with Mack.
The clerk backs into his room as Mack and Squeaver enter, Beordir pushes his way in, and Atlas and Elyngael stick their heads into the room of the elderly man.
The room looks to be an office – quite likely his. Bookshelves line the walls, with every book neatly and precisely in position. The desk by the frosted glass window is quite bare. In the centre of the room is a table with chairs on either side. On the table is a red quill and a tan leather bound notebook.
"I'm sorry, perhaps you would prefer to come back another time when you have had a chance to relax?"
Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {You try and imagine how this must look to an outsider. A heavily armed and battle trained party have entered an office, spied on the desk of the secretary, gather and whisper in private in front of the clerck and secretary, aren't following the directions of a lawful representative of the city, are forcing their way into his office, and outnumber the clerk and secretary: 9 vs 2? By all accounts, it must appear like the party are trying to hide something or are acting as thugs. It is difficult to see how the party have not actively intimidated the man. I ask your forgiveness good sirs. Please let me explain. You see we," and he pauses here to indicate the group, "are unfamiliar with what exactly is going on. Things have not been well explained to us and well, we're a little on the simple side, you know how adventurers are. It also doesn't help matters that various of us have had run-in's with Gaston Laroutte and thus are a little suspicious of things when he is involved."
Armand pauses to gather his thoughts. "Perhaps if someone could explain better what is expected of us, and where Gaston on..." Diplomacy 20 (d20+10)
"There's no need to summon the guard or anything, just tell us more of what is going on and what to expect. The clerk stands his ground, although a little wobbly. Armand tries to ease the situation as Elyngael approaches him. The clerk takes a few steps backwards. Armand suspects he still feels threatened.
The rest of the party give the clerk some space, some oblivious as to what is going on.
The secretary smiles a forced smile to the party as she raps on the door.
It is opened almost immediately by the guards. "What's going on in here? Everything alright Eliza?" One of the guards asks. The other is beside him eyeing the party with caution. "This one is trying to get in as well, but wasn't with Miles. Should we let him in?" Nat can be seen standing behind both guards.
Miles waves/gestures to the guard "It's ok, Ulrich, he's with us"
The guard stands aside to let Nat in as the clerk comes out of his office to speak with the guards.
"Yes, yes. It's ok. I think. I think there has just been a misunderstanding. At least I hope that is what it is." The clerk still looks flustered.
"Let me try this again. My name is Eldred Montenegro. I'm a clerk assisting the prosecution against this Gaston fellow you seem to be wary of. He's currently locked up in the holding cells. You can visit him afterwards if you like" he turns to answer Elyngael's question "I have no intention to trap you in legal terms or have you incriminate yourselves or anything like that. All I want is your story about him. The more than can put him away for a long time the better. The reason it has to be done separately is so that you don't collude or change your story when all talking together. That's all. I swear on Miles' life"
Miles, who had been counting the ceiling tiles, is suddenly brought back to attention "What? What did I do???"
The guards and clerk share a chuckle. Armand believes the clerk to be joking and that Miles is often the target of good-natured ribbing.
Seeing the party relax, the clerk (and DM) ushers Mack into the office to commence his interview.
The questions asked are pretty straightforward, though perhaps the main ones are: In your own words, how did you meet the accused? What relationship do you have with the accused? Have you ever witnessed the accused committing a crime? How would you describe his character? Do you wish for your name to remain anonymous?
He jots everything into the journal at his desk. "Now, please sign here and initial here and we're done." When done he escorts Mack from the room. "Who's next?"
One by one the party are separately interviewed, with Miles and the guards waiting with the party by the door. Even Nat and Elyngael are given the opportunity to tell their stories.

Atlas looks about the group, "So, should we go check in on him and make sure he's appropriately beaten and underfed before he dies? Maybe they'll let me cut the rope or use the ax when they put him down for good." Atlas clearly doesn't see Gaston as a human any more. He's just another monster that needs to be dealt with for the sake of making the Wold a safer place.

Armand gives his statement but also provides an official transcript of the Tree's trial in abstention of Gaston which resulted in Gaston's Banishment from the Tree forever... (where in Gaston's plan to frame the Tree was revealed, his dealings with Drow, and his dealing with the thieves guild in Plateau City - in which names were named).
"I'm glad that's over.
Armand listens to Atlas and chuckles at Atlas's desire to see justice done.
When Mack asks about returning to the Tree Armand shakes his head. "Well first off, I don't know about you but I sure could use a good hot meal, a bath, and some sleep in a real bed. Also there is the problem of the giant's rampaging around. We probably need to tell someone about that. I'm not sure who though."
Armand will ask the clerk or secretary (I'm not sure who sits in the outside the office desk). "Sir where in your fine city would you deem to be the place with the best tasting food? And also we ran into a caravan of refugee's on the way to your city saying that a village named Sawdust had been attacked by 100 giants. Whom would we need to report that too?"

Once each of his friends is done, he gathers his notes and exits the room. As he walks up, Atlas is still plotting revenge on Gaston. Beordir warns, "If you go talk to him, you will give him the opportunity to disturb you more. It may not affect his death, but what he tells you before dying could affect your life. I would avise against it. However, you may slake your thirst for vengence by witnessing his execution."

I feel at fault for many of the crimes that Gaston has committed. I had a chance to prevent them by stopping him the first time. People are dead that should be alive, because of my failure. 'Osul speaks his peace, and thanks Eldred and Miles for the opportunity on the way out. — "Even if the City puts together a force to investigate at Sawdust, doesn't that sound like exactly the sort of thing The League would be interested in contributing to?! And we already have directions to them."
"And if I can help it, I would not want any chance for further notoriety for him in death. Something conducted without public spectacle."

Nat practically barges through the guards as they decide to let him pass, muttering something petty and mean-spirited under his breath. He relaxes a little as he rejoins the party, and while they wait around for the testimonies to be given he begins to recount a long, winding series of detours around the city. "Nothing like a good wander in a new place. They have some great bars and fancy little restaurants over in the Dragon Quarter, pretty pricy stuff though."
When it comes to his turn to testify Nat says his piece to the clerk, but becomes increasingly frustrated as he realises that his testimony might not be worth all that much, it being mostly second-hand information. He comes out looking a lot less jovial than before he went inside. When Armand brings up the idea of bed and board, he nods. "I'm not too keen on leaving before I know this man's definitely paid the price for his actions. I'll need a good meat pie to get all this foul-tasting bureaucracy out of my mouth, anyhow."

DM RobC - "Will his death change anything for those who have died or their loved ones?" Tuesday July 25th, 2017 8:27:13 AM
Turns out, the deposition isn't so bad after all. That doesn't mean the party aren't relieved once it's over.
Atlas suggests going to check in on Gaston to make sure is being treated "appropriately". I'm sure he wouldn't want to rub the position in his face either.
Mack is ready to head back to the Tree. Despite only arriving today he doesn't want to spend even one night in Plateau City.
Armand asks the secretary for a place with magnificent food. The secretary is obviously still a little apprehensive, but seems keen to provide any information that would help the party on its way. "I hear the Blue Ale Tavern in the Gold Quarter is exquisite. It's said they serve some of the finest wines in all the Wold. But, um, well, there's, uh, there's a bit of a dress code"
Nat's report seems to support this. He isn't happy to leave until he knows Gaston has paid for his crimes. The man is so slippery there's always the chance of him escaping justice - one way or another.
"Sounds good to me!" Miles rises to his feet at the sound of food "Want to meet there for dinner?"
The clerk then answers the question about the giants "I'm really not sure who you would report that to in Plateau City. Most folk here keep to themselves unless the danger is direct to the city. That said, I think the best bet would be to report it to the Woldian League of Adventurers. They're based in the Dragon Quarter"
This seems to align with Osul's suggestion.
Beordir advises against seeing Gaston. Why give him one more chance to upset the party?
Elyngael is rightfully concerned for those that have lost gold because of Gaston "I believe he is saying that all the money is gone. Spent on fine living, securing favors, and so forth. His life might be spared if he can lead us to any remaining gains that can be distributed back to his victims"

I want to get back to the Tree as much as you, but we should check in at the WLA and look around the city to see if there is anything or anyone that could help us when we get back to the Tree." Atlas shifts his eyes to Elyngael and Nat to indicate that they might be able to help.

DM RobC - "Dragon Quarter... " Wednesday July 26th, 2017 7:38:00 AM Atlas is happy to stick around Plateau City for a little while. Given it is the biggest city on the peninsula there is probably lots to see and do.
Mack is also happy to do a little wandering, and both he and Squeaver are ready to get outside. For the briefest of moments, Mack thinks he spots Gaston in the crowd. But it turns out to be a centaurs rear end.
Osul farewells Eldred and Miles "Oh... yeah... ok. I'll see you guys around then"
Armand is in favour of heading out as well - in particular to the tavern. He turns to ask Miles if he would like to come along. Miles gets that look like a puppy about to go for a walk. He's just so happy to be included. "Absolutely! I know just the way" Grinning from ear to ear, Miles escorts the party through the streets.
Beordir also wants to stick around. Magical shops are easy to come by, and he will almost certainly find the scroll he wants.
The rest of the party join along, and soon the party are back at the tavern.
The owner immediately recognises Elyngael. "Ah, my dear. I have had fresh flowers sent to your room. I trust you like dragon lilies?" You can see him do a bit of a double-take as he tries to decide whether he should greet her with a handshake, bow, or just a wave. "Are you hungry? Would you like me to ask the cook what he would recommend?"
"Ooh, that sounds good. Whatever he recommends is good for me! Oh, and a round of drinks for my friends" Miles is still in a good mood.
The tavern owner smiles, but keeps his attention on Elyngael. "I sent a boy around to the other taverns as you requested to see if there was a letter waiting. He returned with something for you" The owner heads over to the bar and looks underneath it. "Ah! Here it is!"
He pulls out a rolled up scroll and hands it to Elyngael. The owner looks to Elyngael for a sign of approval. Judging by his manner, you have no doubt he has treated this scroll with due care.
On opening the scroll, Elyngael can see that someone has written something in black ink. The ink has been smudged. The author likely in a rush. "Come see me. I have a deal for you. Lives are at stake. G."

Armand looks at the letter. He then turns to Miles. "Does Gaston have access to writing material in prison? Can he get letters out? How trustworthy are his guards? We know Gaston has connections to the thieves guild..."
Armand shakes his head and goes to the bar. "I need a drink before a bath."
Armand looks at Atlas, "I guess it's to be expected. I swear Gaston is going to have some plan already in place to antagonize you from beyond the grave. His death will bring no peace."

Nat smiles at the mention of free booze: "Awful decent of you, friend," he says to Miles, walking up to the bar.
With an ale snugly in hand he sits and stares wistfully at the ceiling, listening to the conversation and chiming in occasionally.
"I don't like the looks of that letter. Were you expecting such a thing, Elyngael?"
He nods in agreement at Armand's concerns. "All excellent questions. I'm not sure the answers will be pleasant...but that's all the more reason to find out."
ooc: I should have mentioned this in my last post, but I'd just like to apologise to everyone for the absence lately. I was without internet for about a week while I went on holiday down to the Dorset coast. Most of all I feel a plonker for not notifying anyone, least of all our good DM. "But if he thinks he can curry favour with the chance of saving lives that are likely only in jeopardy as a result of his own actions and transactions...? The least we can do is find out more and report it to the Clerk... and... see if we can help them, not him." Armand sits with Atlas and orders a meal. "You know Atlas, you cannot blame yourself for the hurt Gaston caused because you did or did not do something early in your career. Do you blame a child for the mistakes it makes? No you teach the child the error and hope it learns and gains wisdom. We are here now to keep Gaston from causing more hurt. If you turn inward and let your anger at yourself and Gaston fester, then Gaston wins. There will be no one that knows his true nature around to stop him from causing more pain and suffering."

Mack: is ready to get going.
Atlas: is going to finish his meal and relax, he’ll be cursed if he Dances to Gastons tune ever again.
Armand: asks to inn keep for address to the Tree Wardens, and cautions Atlas to take a step back and not let his distaste color his perceptions.
‘Osul: ruminates on the G. in the message, and then decides that a meal looks good after all.
Boerdir thinks about a really cool battle.
Elyngael sits and eats with her back to a wall.
Nathaniel Enjoys the free booze.
The inn keeper is a fount of information. Yes prisoners do have access to writing materials, and mail goes out from the prison daily. I had a brother in Prison a few years back. He thinks for a moment. I’m certain that some of the guards can be bought, but with the high value being places on this gaston character, I mean he tried to cheat a peer…ain’t no guard going to get into that. the man sends a runner out to check at the other inns, and he sets a bottle of brandy on the table. The Tree Wardens enjoy a good meal and fine drink while waiting on the runner. He returns empty handed though.

Armand finishes his meal and address those at the table. "You know I've been thinking. If Elyngael's letter is from Gaston, then he's not going anywhere. The letter states "come see me". Assuming it's Gaston we can see him when we want. It's getting late in the day now. I say let's take a bath and rest, or if you're inclined go see what the night life is in this city, and then consider our options in the morning."
He takes a last sip of brandy. "Personally, I say we allow several party members to go about their shopping and what not and ignore the letter for now. Let's see if Gaston is desperate enough to write another letter. And it if is Gaston then we can go back to the clerk, show him the letters, and see what the court wants us to do. If they allow visitation, then we go in prepared with some Zone of Truth spells and a healthy dose of why should we listen to you Gaston."
Armand then inquires of the innkeeper about the possibility of bathing and getting his clothes cleaned.

Elyngael agrees with Armand, however, she enjoyed the meal but drank no brandy. "The only nightlife I'm interested in is at the prison. If a letter can come out of the jail, then a letter can go into the jail. I want to get a message to Gaston before he appears in court. We need to know 'whose lives' are at stake. And, why is he willing to 'make a deal'? What sort of deal can a prisoner make? Mack, I like your idea about the WLA guild office. I'll go with you tonight, but first let me write a note." Elyngael goes to the Innkeeper, scribbles a few words, adds a promise of more compensation after its delivery, and leaves with Khan, Mack and Squeaver.

Looking over to Armand, "I'm sorry friend, but I'm with Elyngael. Let's keep this simple and just go see what he has to say. We know it will be filled with lies and deception to benefit him, but lives could truly be on the line. Likely ones that he arranged to be on the line, but none the less. We need to hurry and bringing others into it likely won't get us what we need to save those lives. Let's get to the WLA, see if they have anything to add, then get straight to Gaston so we can get this over with. It won't go away and the only thing that could happen if we delay is more people will die, because we didn't kill him when we had a chance."

Atlas: takes the middle ground, go se the WLA, but then go see Gaston.
Armand: Has washed his hands of Gaston, with good reason, perhaps a visit to the WLA?
‘Osul: feels that the decison to not see Gaston could be a mistake, but the WLA? c'mon, that's something to see.
Boerdir sets back to enjoy his post repast euphoria, he's curious, but more concerend about the ambiance than anything else.
Elyngael Wisely has a reply letter to Gaston crafted, a reasonable and measured response to the cad.
Nathaniel is ready to go see the sights!
The letter is crafted and sent. directions are aquired from the innkeeper and the party sets off to the Dragon Quarter where the WLA is stationed. Plateau City is truly a wonder! and the Dragon Quarter is the Jewel so far.
The WLA building is a ubiquitous representation of the WLA norm. the Tower with the High Woldian symbol atop a block house made of cut rose marble, The entrance is at street level, and the door is unguarded.
you enter into a foyer lined with chairs on each side of the walls, a desk with a very attractive human woman sets agaisnt the far wall. There were two people ahead of you in line but luckily their business was attended to quickly and they were on their way.
She smiles as the group approaches. Welcome to the Woldian League of Adventurers. My Name is Meribel. Fogive my persumption, but you would not happen to be the adventuring group known as the "tree wardens" would you?

"We are here for several reasons, among which is to report on the repercussions of the giants attacking Sawdust, having dispensed with the official business that brought us upon the fleeing villagers who had already been set upon by a group of Oni. Do you already have plans to investigate and retake the settlement?" 'Osul makes no assumption that the first person they meet would not be who they need to speak to.

"And is there a gift shop?"

------------------------------------------------------------- ooc: A quick reminder for those of us that are part of the WLA. As players we've never been here, but as characters we have. Elyngael goes to Meribel thinking that this would be a logical place where her parents may have left her news about their health and activities. "Meribel, I am Elyngael Noldoryn, and I have family that may have left a letter for me. Also, is this a place for adventurers to find new assignments? It seems like there is always someone in need, and seeing as Gaston is about to be prosecuted, I may be available soon." The Woldian League of Adventurers is quite a well-built structure implying wealth....and danger. Beordir looks around the nicely-furnished room, while the others fall all over the woman guide. 'Osul seems to keep the most level head and reports the trouble with the nearby village.
However, he is quite surprised to find that the Tree Wardens are already known here. Mostly he keeps quiet and looks around, getting a feel for the place.

DM RobC - "Nice place, very nice." Tuesday August 1st, 2017 8:34:15 AM
There are no doubt numerous purveyors of books in this City should Armand wish to stock up. Only the rarest of tomes would not be found.
Osul handles introductions, announcing that the party are indeed to Tree Wardens "We do keep notes on membership. From what I hear you are doing quite well for yourselves by the tree of Parting. Have you given any thought to venturing further in the Wold?"
Osul also briefs her on the giants and Oni situation. Meribel looks to be in deep concentration as she listens.
Mack enquires about tours... and a gift shop "I'm sorry, but we do not offer tours. As members you are welcome to make your way through this building on your own though. And we are yet to have a gift shop" Meribel grins as she responds to Mack. That's when Atlas brings on the charm.
"It all depends on what day you were here. When were you last here? Perhaps I was saving the Wold that day?" she answers playfully.
Armand and Elyngael don't sense any deception from Meribel.
Elyngael again looks for information about her parents. "I'm sorry, but nothing like that has come through here." Meribel responds "But in terms of new assignments, we have nothing right now. I think the matter of these giants and oni that you speak of may require some attention. I will present it to the Chapter Head. He will determine an appropriate response. If it requires direct involvement I am sure you will be on the short-list for deployment"
Nathaniel brings to topic to a more light spirited topic: joining "Absolutely. The League unites heroic adventurers in fighting evil, in all its deadly forms, and in protecting the innocent. It pretty much runs itself, supported through altruism and heroic adventurers stepping up when needed. Those with the right skills and heart are welcome here. Please take a look around, and if you like what you see, come and see me and I will get you started on your journey"
Beordir continues to be suspicious of everyone and everything.
Meribel smiles and allows the party to go about their business.
The party are free to explore the WLA building. There are doors labeled 'Private' but for the most part the entire building is quite open. There are class rooms where studies are conducted surrouned by books and desks. There is a training room that looks like a cross between a dojo and an arena. You can see a number of people stand around cheering while two dwarves battle with wooden maces. They each have bruises but no blood has been drawn. There is a common area for meals, and a room lined with bunks for members to rest in.
--------------------------- OOC: I'm conscious that the pace of this module has been quite slow, and allowing for more roleplay than combat. Please feel free to talk amongst yourselves and let me know if there is anything you'd like me to do. Do you want me to nudge things along? Are you happy with the roleplaying? Would you like more time to explore Plateau City? Would you like some small encounters to break things up? Happy to accomodate :)

-------------------------------------------------- ooc: I could swear at one point while leveling we made a trip to Plateau City to train with the WLA, but I cannot seem to find it now. Oh well, I'll change Atlas' tune accordingly.
DM Rob, I'm guessing the delay is while we wait to fill the open DM/ADM spots? Atlas is happy to keep chatting up Meribel, but if we're on hold maybe we could have a few small encounters in town? This groups has a diverse set of needs and wants that will likely drive us apart if we keep role playing, and we all know that you don't split up the party! :-)

Armand looks around. "I don't think this is for me." He turns to Meribel. "I've heard talk of a sages guild or society, something along those lines anyway. Could you direct me to where they might be located in Plateau City?"
Beordir (Galen) AC: 22/15/17, CMD 20, Saves: 5/7/6, HP: 48 / 48 Tuesday August 1st, 2017 7:03:49 PM
Meribel seems like a reasonable sort, but this organization seems like a place to celebrate how amazing a person you are. Since Beordir hasn't had the same successes as the rest of the Tree Wardens, this WLA falls a bit flat.
Armand expresses his feeling quite succinctly. Beordir concurs, "I agree, Armand. I think I would prefer a similar place of knowledge. Mind if I tag along?"
Elyngael (Lynnette D) AC: 20 (T:14, FF:16), CMD 20, HP 59/59 Tuesday August 1st, 2017 10:21:43 PM
Elyngael contemplates all that she has seen so far. Then she asks the others, "I'm not sure. Are any of you members of this league? Do you think it would benefit me to join at this time?"
She then asks Meribel, "How does this work, does membership get me more assignments?
DM RobC - "Mind if I tag along?" Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 7:44:58 AM Atlas lets the others go about their business while he gets down to business. "You can keep trying sir, but I meet confident adventurers like you every day." Meribel grins widely
Mack is off! He races through the building checking hallways, trying to find stars to take him just a little higher. Eventually he finds himself on the 4th storey balcony looking out on Adventurer's Square. The air is fresh , and overhead he can see the griffons and flying carpets that transport people throughout the city
Elyngael isn't sure. She tries to get opinions from the others and asks Meribel about assignments "Assignments are handed out based on a number of factors, but often includes proximity and skill set. We try not to assign tasks to groups that might not be able to achieve them. Sometimes it is unavoidable though, for the good of the Wold"
"You are welcome to talk to current members if you have questions. We don't want anyone to feel pressured to join."
-------------------------------
Armand and Beordir aren't that impressed. The WLA just isn't for them. They want something a little more intellectual. Meribel nods "I understand. If you head out the door, turn left, and then take the next left, followed by a right, you'll find the Sage's Guild"
The pair find the guild easily enough. Unlike other organisations the guild outpost in Plateau City is not the headquarters. The headquarters of the Sages Guild is actually based in the Floating City.
The cold, stone outside of the building hides a softer interior. Red wooden walls and floors, everburning torches in sconces, soft music being played somewhere inside, and, for some reason, the smell of cinnamon is in the air. Even in the foyer books line the walls.
Just inside the door, sitting in a leather chair is a half-elf reading a thick book: "The 42 Trials of Guidern the Great". He looks up to smile at you.
------------------------------- OOC: Just to clarify the delay...
Basically you tricky people you, dodged an encounter. As a result you've gone quite some time since the last combat. I just want to make sure people aren't getting bored. If you want some excitement I can certainly throw some in :) If you would prefer to move things on, simply head back to the tavern to call it a day. Otherwise, let the roleplay continue!

OOC: I'll defer current direction and speed to the others, as I'm getting ready to head out of town on a road trip to Texas for 6 days. I should be able to take my daily turns, but not as easily from a small iphone. ;)
Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 21 (T 13 FF 18) , CMD: 23/18, HP 73/73 Character Sheet Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 10:41:42 AM
Atlas isn't known for giving up, so he continue to speak with Meribel, asking her about her adventures and just trying to get to know her. He is very interested in her stories, genuinely. He finds that the best way to win a woman over is to listen and learn to understand their interests. Within that time he looks for any tips on what would help. Is she a tavern and ale kind of girl, or does she prefer wine and a private dinner? Is she a caster, or does she prefer to a bow or sword? Does she like fashion and balls or quite strolls along the beautiful streets of Plateau City? He looks for anything he can find so that the next time he's in town he can surprise her with something.
Then, before he wears out his welcome, he leaves, heading back to the tavern for a quite dinner. "I'm going to call it a day. I'll be at the tavern if anyone is looking for me."
------------------------------------------------ ooc: Darn players are always goofing up our adventures, lol. I'm OK with whatever you want to throw at us. Encounters are fun, but the down time is also a nice break as well. Thanks Rob!
Armand (Robert D) AC 17/touch11/flat15 HP 55/55 CMD 17 Character Sheet Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 5:14:38 PM "uh, hello sir," Armand begins. "My friend and I would be interested in learning some more information about the Sage's Guild. We might be interested in joining."
Armand will take a seat if offered and listen intently to what the elf has to say.
OOC - I'm fine for now, busy at work. Maybe when you get us all back together again at the Inn you can throw something at us. Maybe someday we'll return to Gaston, but it does not appear high on our list of things to do while in the city.
Nathaniel (Joe) AC: 21/15/16, HP: 47/47, CMD: 23 Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 7:03:59 PM
Nat listens to Elyngael and Meribel's brief exchange. He pipes up: "These assignments - I'm sure you the League does its best to match the right person to the job but...would we have our own free choice for what we want to pursue? Or would we be expected to do what we're given?"
He adjusts his bow on his shoulder uncomfortably. "Don't get me wrong, I admire the WLA and I'm quite eager to try my hand. But I'd like to be sure what I'm actually signing up for."
Beordir (Galen) AC: 22/15/17, CMD 20, Saves: 5/7/6, HP: 48 / 48 Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 8:14:34 PM
Beordir walks along with Armand to the Sage's Guild. As they walk in and take in the opulent surroundings, Beordir murmurs, "I may be more of a naturalist than I thought." Thankfully, there is another distraction. Beordir turns his attention to the elf, looking him over and trying to divine his origins.
Armand takes the lead, and Beordir introduces himself in Elven after Armand finishes, "Well met. I am Beordir Nalas-Radin. We are definitely interested in finding out about the Sage's Guild."
Elyngael (Lynnette D) AC: 20 (T:14, FF:16), CMD 20, HP 59/59 Wednesday August 2nd, 2017 10:47:47 PM
Elyngael waits patiently through Atlas's flirting and gives Meribel a look of sympathy. She speaks up and agrees with Nathaniel, though, because he is voicing some of her concerns. "Meribel, I'm very interested in this guild, but I need to know these things, too, plus can you check for my parents. When I was a child they would not have thought to share guild information with me. Do you have them listed as members, current or past?"

ooc: about time I start recording locations. 'Osul doesn't know that there are other places in the City this could take him, and he hasn't forgotten this is a stop on the way elsewhere.
