Thanks a Boatload

You have many plans and ideas--some short-term, and some long-term. Your immediate decision, however, seems to be whether to leave Comeri with the two boats you have, or whether to teleport to a nearby port and acquire more, so you can get everybody off at once. Each idea has its merits; the question is which one you want to choose.

You are able to find a rough valuation of the island, the mine, and the buildings, though you're not sure how recent it is. [OOC: I don't want to do that math just yet, so for now let's say you have a rough estimate and we'll get specific when we need to.]

On the dock, a sleek gray cat saunters out from behind one of the bulkheads on the keelboat. It stretches, jumps down to the dock, and begins looking around alertly.

The cat sits quietly, it's back to the water. It doesn't seem at all bothered by the people about. In fact, it barely acknowledges them. It doesn't meow for food, nor brush up against any legs.

It simply sits and watches the goings on, until it spies the party. Then the cat simply stares.

It's whiskers twitch a little at the sight of the linotaur Zeoll, and it cocks it's head on seeing Terser - focusing on him.

Jozhur is quite keen to Zeoll's idea, "Such a thing would be possible? That would be great, though it would be best to have some sort of trained militia to fend off any attacks until we arrive. Not to mention, we may not be able to handle larger attacks on our own. I would feel better about things if we could set this up before leaving these people defenseless."

Ever perceptive, Jozhur notices the cat apparently staring at them. He stares back for a brief moment, but quickly moves on. The Lionfish is no place for a pet cat, though it could help with the rat population.

"Hmmm. A network of islands. A slave haven. Reuniting families. This is all well and good, but my life is dedicated to service to the Lord or Life and Death, to riding the Wold of undead and soulless creatures and constructs. Managing a network of orphanages and refugee camps is not exactly what I had in mind. This task you propose seems better suited to Flower or Pantheon than an adherent of Gargul."

"But I'm interested in knowing more about what you have in mind."

"As for messages and divinations, I can do both."

For his part, Terser agrees with the need for a militia. That just seems a more organized version of his proposal to train the villagers to defend themselves.

He will volunteer to train any who wish it to use simple weapons, as it is easy to find, make, and repair spears and staves. He requests Zod's help for team tactics, seeing as he knows all that organized army type of fighting.

Terser doesn't take any particular note of it, but he will toss a piece of dried fish the cat's way. He respects a hunter, though there were none in the mines where he grew up. He's more used to pet lizards and the like, not that his parents ever considered him responsible enough to have one of his own.

"It's you. It's really you" the woman says in a familiar voice.

Drawing her hood back the party see her to be a young(-ish) dwarf. Her hair is unkempt, but her clothes and skin look very clean. Her emerald eyes are as warm as her smile.

The only weapons you can see are two daggers at her belt, and you glimpse a buckler tucked away in her cloak.

"Of all the people, I can honestly say I wasn't expecting you here, Terser"

Though she is obviously happy to see her old friend, there is a sense of tiredness about her. She just lacks energy.

Terser's jaw drops at the revelation. It has been many years since he had last been home in the Scab, and seeing this little bit of home is a shock.

Terser did not know Tahni as well as his former brothers in arms, but still had many fond memories of her laughter and the love she had for his brother in all but blood. It had irked him that no matter how many necromancers they tracked down and rid from the world, they were never able to find her.

He runs up and embraces her. "I never thought we would see you again! Have you heard anything of the others? How did you come to be here? We need to send a message to Sam! Hey everyone! This is Tahni! And Zeoll - while you're composing dream messages, send another to Sam at the Sage's Guild, please!"

When the cat starts changing into a dwarf, Zod reaches for his still-enchanted quarterstaff, pausing after Terser's warm reaction.

"What did you expect to find here...?" The Minotaur asks, his tone more honest curiosity than anything else.

Kunda rears back at Tahni's sudden transformation, then quickly slithers around her during Terser's embrace, excitedly circling the two dwarves a few times before drawing her length back over to Zod.

The Minotaur nods at the mention of the Sages' Guild, "Yes, maybe the scholars have advice for protecting & guiding the Captain's dream of a fledgling nation as well."

Tahni allows herself to ease into Terser's hug. It's as if she is able to share her burdens for just a moment with another as the snake holds them together.

She smiles to Bralin and Zeoll as they introduce themselves but finds it hard to concentrate on them just now.

Tahni sits herself down on the edge of the keelboat as her eyes start to well with tears.

"I have to find him Terser, I just have to. Bruagh has to be out there somewhere"

Tahni goes on to explain that she has been searching for her lost love since she escaped capture. When she mentions her capture you notice she pulls her sleeves so far down that they almost cover her hands.

With a slight sniff she then uses her sleeve to quicky wipe her nose in un-ladylike fashion. She takes a breath to gather herself and continues.

"When divination failed, I tried backtracking through the Scab to find him. The others were actually not that hard to find. Devlin was still in Drakemeade. Shinto and Shonti were helping keep Riddleport secure from pirates, still the bickering brothers though. Devlin stayed with the wandering life. I think I heard he was still chasing down what remained of the Indigo Brotherhood. I never saw Sam again. Are, are you saying you have?"

"But Bruagh. I know he's out there, Terser. I feel him with every sunrise and sunset."

"I've travelled so far, chasing down any rumour or piece of information I could find. I caught wind that there were a number of dwarves in Bonetown doing great things, so I'm on my way there now. It could be him, you know? I also heard of a dwarf in the Ice Vein. That might be my next stop. I also want to check the Dirt City houses for any information. I hear there's a slaver there who might know something"

Tahni gives one last sniff and dabs her sleeve on her eyes. She rises to her feet and extends her clean hand to the party with a smile "Tahni Wyrmrider. Pleased to meet you. Sorry I'm not always like this. I've made a terrible impression, I know"

You have plans, rather large plans, for what to do with the slaves and the islands you've discovered. Perhaps they could be trained to form militias, and signal you in case of trouble.

But those plans get put on temporary hold when the cat suddenly turns into a dwarf woman--one who seems to know Terser.

Meanwhile, Zod, Jozhur, and Reggie are talking to the elf woman who was rescued earlier. She is sitting on the deck of the Lionfish now, sipping a cup of water and looking confused. "My name is Anrissa," she says softly. "I was--I was at Waypoint. I think."

A little later he has the chance to speak with the elf on the Lionfish. "Maam," Zeoll says, "do I have the honorr of speaking to the same Anrrissa who helped the Emerrald Drragons defeat the evil Parrnoth, who rruled the Emerrald Kingdom?"

If it is the same, he adds, "Did you meet K'Narra, the leaderr of that grroup of herroes? I knew herr slightly back in the day. She liked one of my songs."

Tahni's eyes widen when Zod introduces himself and she finds herself paying a lot of attention to Kunda. By her reckoning the snake could swallow a dwarf whole if it tried. Still, there were quite a few dwarves safely standing here.

She reciprocates a bow with Rill, trying to bow just that little bit lower than he as a sign of respect. "I... I hadn't considered travelling with anyone else" she truthfully admits "Don't get me wrong, I would be very grateful for the company. The rest of you are getting acquainted with the dwarf woman, who apparently is a real dwarf and not a cat. Reggie spends some time with her son.

((OOC: I'm gonna reformat my header sometime here. The numbers after the lines are Kunda, not the current max)).

Zod nods his thanks to Tahni for the healing, noting the arcane nature of the spell with a raised eyebrow (Spellcraft 17). “Not really my call to make, having traveled with the group for only a few months now myself, but I’ve got no issues with you joining us!” He answers the dwarf with a smile. “A most humble and skilled Sorceress just recently left our party to see to things back home. Your skills seem a bit… different… but I’m sure you’ll find a place to ply your talents here.”

Zod explains that they’re trying to figure out a means to get all the freed slaves and captive overseers off the island. While also paying mind to the farm animals. He asks the dwarven woman if she has any ideas (or transportation spells) that could help with the situation.

He suggests that one or two of the Lionfishers leave and return with more ships – whether Rill Teleports back to Bonetown, or they send Tula with funds to pay for another ship to sail back out from the nearest port. Zod thinks it best they look after the people and animals of Comeri Island directly, and come back to reclaim the land later. “If it helps, I can travel with the Lionfish and conjure some winds to speed her along.”

Alternatively, Zod notes that he could send an Animal Messenger, such as a gull, albatross, or other sea bird, to a location within 10 days’ flight, with an attached, written message. The message could contain promise for payment, or a request to an ally, asking for passenger ships to be sent to Comeri (including naval coordinates, of course).

“Unfortunately,” the minotaur notes, “I would not know where to send the Messenger myself.”

Assuming there is no disagreement, Rill will Teleport to Bonetown and hire an extra ship. He will check in with Tula to estimate how much this will cost, how many days travel from Bonetown to here, and how to give them enough navigational info to get them here.

As for communication, Rill says, "I can use Sending to pretty much anyone. For folks we leave somewhere, a Bird Feather Token costs 300 gold and will carry a message anywhere, as fast as a bird can fly and for as long as it takes to get there. I carry two of these with me, and Tula has one that I gave her for the ship."

"Anyone want to go with me? I can include up to 4 of you, though Zeoll and Zod count as two."

(Where are we on XP? According to my records, we got 6,000 on 6/8 and 13,000 on 7/23. That puts Rill at 284,000 XP. 13th level is still a ways off for him. But maybe I missed something.)

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28/30; HP55of67)
Thursday August 24th, 2017 7:10:47 PM

With a lot of help from Rill, Zeoll makes lists of the slaves on the island:

1 - Those that know where they want to go to resume/reconnect their previous lives. These folks just need access to a "safe" port to book their own passage. Those who can be sent to a nearby port -- Rum, the Taur Isles, Aisildurian ports, Farungia, etc -- we can make a Circuit and drop those folks off with enough money to go further if need be. If there are too many people in this category, we can use both ships and a crew for each on the Circuit, with extra sailors taken from party members, former slaves, and so on.

2 - Those that know where they want to go, but cannot do so alone (children, those easily taken advantage of, etc.) Some of these we can personally deliver as we travel the Circuit. Others we can send via Teleport spells -- Rill can cast two per day. We need to know from the DM how many of these, if any, are stranded out of both circuit and teleport range.

3 - Those that could reconnect with family, but don't know where or how. We can help with this through Divination / Read Dreams / Scrying. Then they fall into category 1 or 2 above. The DM can tell us how many remain lost.

4 - Those that simply want to start a new life somewhere. We'll drop them anywhere on the circuit ... but we invite them to settle here on Comeri or on Merchant Island once we conquer it, or on Pearl Island, where Bonetown is located. Some of these may have people they would like to contact and bring here -- if we can gather them in on the Circuit or via teleport, we can do that.

5 - Former slavers, overseers, Miss Hych, etc. They get the same choice as everyone else, but they have to vow not to ever own slaves or work in the slavery business ever again.

Consulting with Tula, Zeoll guesstimates that the Circuit will run about 4,000 miles round trip, or 80 days of sailing. (see distances table here).

AFTER MAKING THESE LISTS, we will have a better idea of the route of the Circuit.

ALSO, if no one objects, Zeoll tells the former slaves that the 5,000 in coin found here will be divided among them.

NEXT -- before embarking on the Circuit -- Rill and at least two other heroes will go to Bonetown via teleport to do Catacombs business for the party. He asks Zod to be one of those going to Bonetown to consult Goodie Bess. She's the witch NPC who is friends with the party, and who has a coven out of town. Zeoll has an intuition that Zod will have get on well with her, and he asks Zod to ask her about witchly scryings and such that will let the party keep tabs on a number of different islands at once.

After he learns more about Tahni, he asks her to go visit Goodie Bess too, and he asks if she can cast Teleport.

Zeoll jots down notes for Rill on what to buy in the Catacombs, and also suggests buying a few party scrolls of Teleport.

Talking to the slaves, Zeoll begins making lists. Reggie tries to recruit slaves for the coming fight against slavers.

Tula advises that hiring two ships would probably better--that way, there would for sure be enough room for all the people and animals that need to travel. Rill is able to teleport to Bonetown to start that process, bringing along Zod, Tahni, and whoever is going to take all the gear to the Catacombs.

Meanwhile, Mistress Hych tentatively approaches Zeoll and Terser. "Um..." she says. "Um. There's--um. There's a lot of tin ore. That came out of the mine. I mean, we could just leave it here for the owners for when they come back. Maybe they'd be less mad that way. Or we could take it and try to sell it. Though I don't know where to sell tin ore." She looks around. "If I ask them nicely--rather than making them--could I have some of the--um--the workers help harvest some of the vegetables and things? I mean, they're not all ripe yet, but we could get some things, and that would help on the journey."

[OOC: Is the plan to have all of the ships sail together? Because you could also divide up the "circuit" into sections, and just have one ship go to each section. Particularly for the hired ships, that might be a better use of your coin.]

In Bonetown, Zod meets with the NPC witch Goodie Bess at Zeoll's urging. The old seer's intuition is apt, as Zod finds himself reflecting on his time with the Bonetowners through his discussion with the woman. The question of mercy after their first battle against the Ghost Driver; protection and guidance of those weaker since. These problems are much removed from the ones faced on treacherous trade routes and old battlefields

While Rill visits the Catacombs, Zod stops off at the Sages' Guild, or arranges to send a message to the nearest Library. He makes a personal inquiry to use their research services, and includes a message for the Sage, Sam, that Terser mentioned, conferring with Tahni one what yup say.

He also asks around about Faelar Deadfall. Not being particularly winsome, Zod is plenty open about paying for any information. Diplomacy 2 to gather info. Deducted 1k gp from sheet.

Okay, so we are hiring a ship from Bonetown to come to Comeri to pick up passengers who want to go to Bonetown or Rum. And the Lionfish is going to deliver passengers southwest who want to go to Aisildur and points on the Taur Isles. The other ship will go northwest to delver anyone who is going to Farungia and regions that-a-way.

We will take the tin that is already mined and sell it later. The proceeds can be used for the benefit of the people we resettle later.

We will certainly all pitch in and ask for volunteers for the harvesting.

We still need ...

1) Some idea of where Merchant Isle and Comeri actually are.

2) The number of former slaves who want to settle themselves here, or fetch their families and settle, here under our protection.

3) The meeting with Goodie Bess and Tahni and Zod to see if they want to form a coven and work together to set up a surveying and communication system.

4) Answer to Zeoll's read dreams from Monday: "As regards the missing mentor and his buyer, Zeoll makes them the focus of his dream-divination, hoping for answers between dusk and dawn." [OOC: What PC was it who had the mentor who was sold into slavery?]

=====

Zeoll asks his friends, "What about the slaverrs of Merrchant Island? I still want to go therre, ambush a fleet of slaverrs on that island, and give them theirr just desserrts. Plus save the slaves at the marrket and claim that island. When should we do that?"

=====

On a personal note, Zeoll only wants to get his share of the loot as raw materials for crafting items. So he has given the folks going to the Catacombs instructions so his share of loot can be readily converted from coin to magic musical instruments. If we are going to be at sea for 30 days or so, that's a lot of opportunity for crafting.

Rill does not care about the ore either way. His main concerns is that carrying and disposing of the ore does not interfere with our transport of these people.

Before he goes, he studies a few places on Comeri to make sure these locations are familiar.

Rill will Teleport Zod and Tahni, along with the gear we wish to sell at the Catacombs. He's glad to have the company, and points out aspects of the town as we go.

In Bonetown, he first heads to the Catacombs. Then he will stop by Portside House, the Black LIon residence when we're in town. He will speak with Brothers Lansel and Engev at Portside house to see if there is any news. He stops in at the Temple of Rest, the main church of Gargul in Bonetown, and checks in with his old mentor, the priest Yaas Farrel. Eventually, he heads to the Harbormaster to tell him where we've been and to see about hiring a couple of ships large enough to take the slaves we have, and he clarifies what our transport plan is.

Once these matters are addressed, he will accompany Zod to see the withch Goodie Bess, inspite of the fact that she kinda makes his skin crawl.

DM Kathy
Sunday August 27th, 2017 9:21:43 PM

Rill teleports with Zod and Tahni to Bonetown. Once there, Rill sells the excess gear in the Catacombs, stops by Portside House, and has a brief meeting with his former mentor. Everything in Bonetown seems to be going well; all the news is about who punched who in a drunken brawl--and some folks are still talking about the Soul Driver. Rill stops by the Harbormaster's office, and is able to hire a couple of ships, both of which can be ready to sail in the morning.

Tahni accompanies Rill on most of his errands, then the two of them meet with Zod to talk with Goodie Bess.

Zod, in the meantime, has visited the Sages' guild, and asked around about Faelar Deadfall. Not many people have heard of him, but you do run into tow or three people who seem to think that he's associated with Dirt City in some way.

Zeoll is still making lists. You do know where Comeri and Market Island are. Your DM is being deliberately vague about it, because I don't actually have permission to fool around with the canonical map of the Middle Seas. Most of the slaves you talk to would rather not stay here; this hasn't been a very happy place for them. There are a few who say that if Mistress Hych is staying, they'll stay and help expand the farm. Nobody wants anything to do with the mine. You haven't been able to dream yet, because you haven't slept yet because it's still the same day.

Jozhur volunteers to help train people to sail or fight. This first day, not a lot of people have firm plans yet, but you may have some takers later on.

Terser has some ideas for where you could sell the tin. It's a useful enough material that you could probably sell it at any large port. You probably won't get the very best price for it, being outsiders, but you should be able to get something for it.

That night, Zeoll dreams of Dirt City.

In the morning on Comeri, the former slaves enjoy sleeping until they're ready to get up, and then having enough time to eat breakfast. Several of them approach Jozhur to take him up on fighting lessons.

In the morning in Bonetown, the hired ships are ready to sail. Are Rill and his group going to sail with them, or are you going to teleport back to Comeri?

That morning Tahni spends some time communing with her followers: Draigh and Gabriel. "Draigh, I need you to stay in the Scab. There's still a good chance that Bruagh will look for me there. Gabriel, I need you to make your way to Bonetown. I have a good feeling about this place".

With directions given Tahni then sets to her spells for the day. She swaps out her Telekinesis spell for Teleport.

She ventures not too far away from Rill - just enough to see a little more of Bonetown. She's interested in seeing what the people are like. They can't all be sailors and pirates, can they? Tahni keeps an eye out for any children, and if they look hungry she gives them what food she has on her.

She then returns to Rill's side and looks to him to make the decision as to ship or teleport.

Rill is glad she sticks close, and he makes it clear to the townfolk that she is to be considered one of the Black Lions. This should either cause folks to give her a warm greeting or a wide berth. The fact that both of are accompanied by a minotaur and a great big snake helps too.

He mentions to Tahni, “Bonetown can be a dangerous place for new folks - not so much because the inhabitants pose a threat to us, but because at our power level some miscreant may get himself killed thinking we are a soft target. If you can cast Teleport, you are a person of some skill and power. Are you a wizard, or do you use divine power like I do?”

He lets Zod take the lead in talking with Goodie Bess. The witch has been helpful to the town, but she is not Rill’s favorite person.

Once the Ships are identified, Rill will carefully study each ship to improve his ability to teleport to each one. He will also become familiar with each captain, asking each for a lock of their hair to make it easier to Scry them on their journey. He hopes that the reputation of the Black Lions as a force for good will allay any fears he would use this against them. He informes the captains that he does not intend to sail with them, but plans to keep an eye on their progress.

Then, if all our business is concluded, he will Teleport back to Comeri and occasionally scry the captain of the lead ship to make sure nothing is amiss. He will include Tahni and Zod unless they wish to sail back to the island.

Zeoll (Cayzle) (AC28/30; HP55of67)
Monday August 28th, 2017 4:53:00 PM

Once Rill returns, Zeoll relates that his dream suggests the party must travel to Dirt City to help Zod's old mentor, Tobias, who records show was purchased by Felaer Deadfall. However, this Deadfall may well have sold him on to some other slaver, so we should focus on finding Tobias rather than Deadfall.

"Anyway, my drream suggests a trrip to Dirrt City. We must be carreful, though, because we have hearrd about the sea-folk warr nearrby therre."

[OOC to kindly DM Kathy -- we HAVE heard about that, right?]

So Zeoll proposes sending the captured ship with those who want to go northeast to Farungia -- we're assuming that there are sailors sufficient among the slaves here to sail the ship? Or there will be when the two ships arrive from Bonetown?

Let those who want to go to Bonetown or Rum wait here for the two ships we have hired.

And we ourselves will take those who seek the Taur Isles and Acid City and Dirt City and points southeast. Our last and easternmost stop with be to Dirt City, where we will help others find travel where they want to go, and where we will seek out Tobias.

And any who wish to live here on Comeri under our protection are welcome to stay and live as farmers and villagers -- I think that includes Mistress Hych, although we will retain her as a leader/organizer only if the large majority of those who stay want her to serve in that role. We will scry this island -- if the magic works -- every day, and we'll set up a system of signal flags so that those who scry here will know how things are going.

=====

Zeoll expects the voyage to Dirt City to be a long one, and he uses the raw materials Rill brings back from the Catacombs to work on the greatest magic item he has ever attempted, surpassing the beautiful feather cloak of charisma he made long long ago, back when charisma-booster items were mostly cloaks rather than headbands!

Tahni, perhaps realizing she's found another adventuring group to share her journey, contacts her followers with instructions. She spends some time wandering Bonetown, and discovers that, indeed, no city can consist entirely of sailors and pirates. Bonetown has its share of crafters and shopkeepers, just like anyplace else--although there is a decidedly nautical flair to be found in even the most basic kinds of establishments.

Rill familiarizes himself with the ships so he can Teleport to them if the need arises. One of the captains, a gray-haired halfling, gives up a lock of hair quickly enough. The other, however, a brash young human, balks at the request. "I was hired to sail," he says. "Nothin' in the deal about magic and sorcery and whatnot. My hair stays where it is."

Luckily, Zod has decided to sail to Comeri, so he boards the ship with the recalcitrant human captain, and Rill can scry on Zod if he needs a window on that particular ship.

Zeoll continues to make arrangements for re-settling the slaves. You are aware of the Merfolk-Sahuagin war currently raging near Dirt City, but most of the action is underwater, and you have hopes you'll be able to avoid it. Zeoll begins work on his Horn of Valhalla, with the enthusiastic support of Terser.

Bralin spends his time carving a little message for the island's owners.

Time passes. Jozhur is able to instruct a few former slaves on the fundamentals of combat. Mistress Hych supervises the provisioning of the keelboat, and the re-provisioning of the Lionfish. After several days, the hired ships arrive, and the Black Lions are once again all in one place.

Your DM does have questions about some of the specific slaves you have rescued. Madra and her children are headed back to their home village, and will be taking the keelboat. She thanks you again for your help, and seems eager to be heading home. So that's one down. However, there is still the girl called Girl; the 10 half-orc toddlers who are not Ky; and Anrissa of the recently-recovered memory. There are also some other orphans who don't seem to have any place to go. Do you have plans for dealing with any of them?

For her part, Mistress Hych has elected to stay, and several former slaves have elected to stay with her. You are able to set up a system of signal flags so they can alert you if there are problems.

"I'm kind of a mixture of both arcane and divine power" Tahni responds to Rill. She still finds it hard to completely relax around him, feeling she must treat Terser's companion with due respect until she knows him better. "Maab is my patron, having protected me from.. things.. in the Scab. She grants me powers: arcane and divine. Through study I have learnt many other spells as well. I don't want to encroach on anyone's role or purpose though. If there I something I can do to help, I will"

Tahni mentions that her divine spells are focused on necromancy "But my wizardly spells are quite versatile. Whatever will best help you is what I will prepare"

She tries to shift the topic from herself with some chit-chat. "I take it from your holy symbol that you follow Lord Gargul? I've always found comfort that the god of death is also the god of life."

Tahni has no wish to be separated from Rill, so gladly accepts his offer of a teleport back.

While the others decide what to do with the children, Tahni spends time playing with Girl and the half-orc toddlers (being very careful of their bites). She casts Prestidigitation and Dancing Lights a few times to perform some tricks to keep them entertained: bubbles of light that pop in the air, making their noses glow purple, and of course, is that a coin behind your ear?

Zeoll does not want the folks who stay behind to feel that they are on their own. Anybody who decides to live on Comeri or (in the future) Merchant Island will receive a salary from the Lionfishers, or from Zeoll, anyway.

"We will need farrmerrs and smiths and woodworrkers and masons and weaverrs and shipwrrights," he says. The old liontaur offers a very generous wage, as he seeks to recruit and reassure any who are thinking of staying.

Diplomacy 36, Sense Motive 23.

Zeoll realizes that he especially needs people to parent and care for these orphans. Are there families who want to stay who are willing to do so? Zeoll is looking for people who will care for them out of love and compassion, so he does not offer any extra money for the job. He wants to see if any will come forward without the money as an incentive. Hopefully some will, and these he will reward well.

Diplomacy 38, Sense Motive 15.

Zeoll looks over the buildings and facilities here, and tries to determine how many people the island can support. He also looks at the harbor and thinks about what it would take to make it a better port.

The next morning, he wishes Zod were here to use his Commune with Nature to detect caves, the extent of the mineral deposits, and any monsters,

He asks the three dwarf characters if any of them are miners, and how the mine could be improved. Zeoll knows that dwarves live in Dirt City, and since they are going there anyway to find Tobias, the old liontaur wonders if any dwarves would be willing to relocate to Comeri to mine this place the way it SHOULD be mined! In exchange for the bulk of the mineral rights, of course.

With proper buttressing, it is possible to delve deeper, where richer material lies."

Tuesday August 29th, 2017 10:38:54 PM

Upon her return, Tahni spends some time entertaining the children, and quickly becomes very popular with them.

Zeoll tries to find families for children who have none. Facing an uncertain future, many adults are reluctant to take on the responsibility of extra children. However, the children on Comeri had been part of a community; many adults knew them and at least cared something for them. One by one, the orphans of Comeri were claimed by families. So that part's taken care of.

The half-orc toddlers, however, didn't have the opportunity to bond with the adults of Comeri, and you're having a much tougher time finding people to take them. Girl is in the same situation. Except she doesn't want to be called Girl anymore. Almost in a whisper, she confides in Zeoll that her new name is Lion. "Because you're a lion and you're my friend," she says. "And all of you are the Black Lions, and your ship is the Lionfish, and you all helped me. So I'm Lion now."

After much discussion, Mistress Hych reluctantly agrees to take on the toddlers and Girl--excuse me, Lion--but "only if you can't find anything else for them."

In the meantime, Bralin gives a pithy assessment of the mining operation, and finds it sadly lacking. Converting from an open-pit mine to a shaft mine is not something your DM has researched, but it's probably a major undertaking. And most of the former slaves are very reluctant to have anything to do with the mine; they seem much more enthused about expanding the farm--and maybe doing some fishing as well.

The keelboat and two hired ships are loaded up and ready to depart. People crowd the decks of both ships, and the Comeri dock, waving goodbye and shouting words of encouragement to one another. One by one, the three ships depart, leaving the Lionfish, her passengers, and the ones who decided to stay on Comeri.

"Necromancy. I assume you do not animate the dead. Such a thing is an abomination to Gargul, and I would jeopardize my relationship with him if I tolerated that. Anything shy of that I'm sure we can work out."

Zeoll is sad that it is so hard to find loving parents for these adorable half-orcs. He does his best to be a foster-father to them for the little time he is here. The old liontaur knows lots of wemic hunting and singing and herding games. He assures Mistress Hych that he will make it a priority to find parents willing to relocate here and raise them right. He's thinking some liontaurs would be best to tame these cubs as they get older.

Zeoll says to the former Girl, smiling hugely, "I am pleased and prroud to hearr yourr new name, Lion. If you will have me, I shall be as a fatherr to you, and I must say that I am most prroud of you, most favorred cub." He holds out his arms for a hug.

Then he chats with Tahni about what Zod and Goodie Bess can do. He is very curious about all things related to their lore and magic. As a seer, Zeoll too casts both arcane and divine magic, and he knows that soon he too will learn a related magic of communing with spirits.

Zeoll also sees his friends new and old laughing together, and it gladdens his old heart.

"Don't worry, Tahni. He'll get his when it's my turn to play at Captain. I'll make him teach me a new language or set him to some other impossible task!"

Rill is concerned about leaving people here on Comeri, but Zeoll reminds him that the owners are not expected for several months. And they are not, strictly speaking, slavers. That is, they are content to use slave labor, but they themselves don't run around capturing and enslaving people.

"I think I can explain things to them," Mistress Hych says. "And, even if you are delayed, you will arrive here before any help they can summon."

Jozhur finally has the opportunity to greet Tahni, who is still becoming acquainted with the Black Lions. They exchange friendly banter with Terser.

Zeoll still has plans, but they have been advanced as far as they can for the moment. Bralin is already pacing the deck of the Lionfish, eager to be off.

So Zeoll bids a fond farewell to Lion, and you set off!

[Please take 16,000 XP for this scene. And this is last call for Comeri. Next stop: Dirt City!]

With a lighthearted close to their recent freedom-granting ventures, Zod finds himself grinning aboard the deck of the Lionfish.

With a long voyage ahead, Zod retires to the hold, scribbling tattoo designs by candle-light and inking new symbols into Kunda's scaly skin.

On the trip to Dirt City, Zeoll is eager to speak with Zod about what Goodie Bess said. "How did you and she and Tahni get along? Are you all now allied? Can you now chat with herr via yourr magical caudrrons?" he asks. "Is it trrue that you can now see anywherre that she or her followerrs have been?"

Zeoll is eager -- maybe overeager -- to put the special talents of bloodwitches to use in his plans to build a greater Bone Nation.

He himself is very busy working everyday on his magical horn.

When he is not crafting, he is talking with all the former slaves on the ship heading to Centaur Island and to Dirt City. He takes days to get friendly, chatting about their lives and experiences. Zeoll is truly interested in them and their stories -- some of which he jots down in his field manual. And he is interested in the story of how they became slaves, the names of slaver captains and ships, the names of any who were especially cruel or murderous, and so on.

Zeoll asks Tahni and Rill if they have ever been to Liontaur Island. If so, he would very much love to take a couple day trips, via teleport, back to his homeland. He would like to recruit some liontaur herders to come and raise goats and sheep on Comeri. If not, he will have to go there himself some time.

Terser reflects on their recent encounters and wonders how he can improve himself and his ability to react and adapt to the situation.

"Hey Zod, what other tricks did you learn in that fancy military style training? Can you teach any of us how to do it too?"

Bralin settles down for the voyage, again whiling away the time by sculpting on stones.

Rill will approach Lion before we go. Kneeling down, he says, "Lion. That is a fine name. And you are a fine and kind person."

He pulls out a ring that has Continual Flame cast on it, and the ring is attached to a cord so she can wear it around her neck if she needs to.

"Please take this light. It is safe. It will not cause any harm and it will never go out. This was created by power give to me buy Gargul, the God of Life and Death. This will serve as a reminder that your life, the life in you, can shine for others to see."

Then stands and he puts his hand on the girl's head. "May your life always be a light against the darkness, a life lived in a way that others will see and take comfort in."

Rill will board the Lionfish as preparations are made to leave.
