There is no daylight left, and the Agents are leary of mounting the cliffs in the darkness. There are anger issues that get in the way of tracking, but cooler heads prevail and a trail is found.
There will be a short break for recovering spells, but everyone is eager to move onto the important task of finding Verity and removing the Vampire's curse from this town.
The Agents camp at the base of the cliffs, looking up into the darkness. Oddly enough, the cliffs seem less dangerous than the villagers had implied. The trails are fairly obvious, if a bit overgrown from disuse. In fact, the lack of traffic makes it even easier to pick up the trail of the recent users. All the Agents have to do is decide their plan of attack.

Sleeping less than a mile from their warm and defensible room seems foolish, but Sigvar holds his tongue. Prudence has lost her sister, and they are probably marching to their deaths. He takes his normal first watch and when he retires for the night is loathe to remove his armor, given their situation However sleeping in it will fatigue him, and he will need every edge in the morning. He sets his armor near at hand and keeps his blades and shield ready in case they are awakened in the night. Perception on watch 19

Anna also removes her armor for the night as she does not possess the endurance feat. Before it is her turn on watch she activates her darkvision SLA so she can see better in the darkness than she can see without it.

The decision to sleep outside near the cliffs had two aspects Nikolai had to consider: finding the tracks early enough before an unforeseen storm hits and obliterates them and the impression on the villagers and Pru's family that they were not taking their time to get around to a pursuit. As far as any disagreement from his team, if he noticed any, he ignored it.
The cliffs probably had a reputation because less experienced folk having troubles on the trails, but nevertheless, even an easy route can pose a problem if one is careless.
"Even if the trail seems easy enough, don't let your guard down. We don't know what minions that vampire has gathered and he may be smart enough to set them to guard any trail leading to his lair."
A quick cold breakfast and Nikolai takes the lead.

The Ranger shares his concern with his fellow agents that his lack of silver weapons will impede his usefullness in a fight... " There's only so much I can go with my flaming short sword... and without some decent silvered arrows, my bow won't be of much use".

Tensions are high and rest doesn't come easy. Thankfully, priests don't have to have good rest to pray for spells. Trayvin just hopes he can do enough to thwart whatever strange abilities this vampire may have.
Everyone else keeps an eye out during their watches, but they see no sign of any enemies. The night is quiet.
A weak dawn comes upon them. There is still no sunlight, but the land becomes lit in muted grays, so even human eyes can see a bit. The paths up the cliff look potentially dangerous, but some general care in where they place their feet seems enough to keep them safe.
Pompous opines about his lack of effective weaponry. He would prefer to fight from the back, providing ranged support to his comrades, but the lack of silver makes this somewhat of a problem.
At his mention of his weapons though, the rest of the Agents unconsciously reach for their own weapons, and gasp in a medley of shock and horror as they discover all of their silver weapons have disappeared from their scabbards and bags!

It bothers him that his kama could vanish from his belt without him noticing it unless there was some magical sleep that overcame them, but anyone on watch would notice that and speak up.

(OOC: Anna did not sleep in the Mithral armor so as to not wake up fatigued. Was the armor stolen with the rest of the weapons? Also I believe 1 silvered arrow is 2 gold + 5 copper as 20 arrows is 1 gold or 20 silvered arrows could be produced for 41 gold )
As Anna has refilled her bag of tricks she says, "I too have a magic bow so if I had silver arrows I could do damage with that but I'm a better melee combatant than a ranged fighter. I can pull 300 gold worth of gear from my bag including potions and scrolls. I believe each arrow I pull would use up 2 gold and 5 copper and each light silver weapon I pull a silver dagger for 22, a silver light mace for 25 or a silver sickle for 26. I can even replace Niko's Kama for 22. Each scroll of magic weapon would also be 25 gold assuming I pulled a first level scroll so I could pull approximately 6 silver light weapons or ammo bundles and matching scrolls of first level magic weapon so all is not lost, I just need 6 seconds and both hands free to pull each item. Hopefully we have time to pull what we need and cast the scrolls on our weapons as needed."

The Agents seem to take it in stride that their weapons have disappeared. Strange though that there was nothing else was done by their stealthy visitor.
Nikolai has no problems finding the trails leading up, as they aren't even hidden at all. It quickly leads up to a cave set in the side of the mountain.

I believe it is a spell that clerics and sorcerers can cast so if I pull 1 scroll of arcane for every 2 of divine Pru can cast one of the arcane scrolls while Trayvin and I use the divine one and we can time the effects to overlap at the same time. Unfortunately we might need to wait to cast the scrolls but I could start pulling the silver weapons now. I know that Pompous wants arrows and Sigvar wants to be enlarged. I do happen to have a stilled scroll of enlarge person I could cast on Sigvar. Nikolai do you want a replacement silver Kama?"

He knows Michael may be a better scout, but this job will be very dangerous and he's not going to ask anyone to do something he wouldn't do himself.

I slept with that sword within 5 feet of my hand and yet something managed to sneak in and steal it from under my nose, just like when he took Verity. This old man is very stealthy. But I still maintain he doesn't want us dead. If he was here, and we were disarmed and unaware of him, he could have slain us all. I still think he wants us as minions. Otherwise why let us live. Sigvar does a double take after mentioning that he didn't see any tracks in or out of the camp. When he looks again, in fact he does. He just hadn't taken the time to look for them before! Perhaps he didn't think about it in his warrior haze after losing his weapon.
Accusations start flying, and discussion starts up of a possible traitor in their midst! Anna starts pulling silvered arrows from her bag, but pauses after a minute when she hears the possibility of finding their lost vampire slaying weaponry.

That takes time and a near impossibility while two Fist Agents are on watch. But if they were magically put to sleep, then it would have the time to search. Magic can detect metals and what kind, but it is still a far stretch in any case. So let's see what tracks are here other than ours."
While Nikolai gets close to the ground to study it, he answers Trayvin, "Yes, it does seem like a waste of time, but if he has a minion that can do this to us, then we need to know as much as we can about him, her, or it. Otherwise, it will happen again."
Nikolai studies the ground around where he slept and takes his time. He figures there would be very few tracks there as most of the activity centered around the middle of camp. There should be his and most likely only one other, the pilferer. Take 20 on Survival check to find tracks = 32

The trail up the mountain to the cave is well and truly scouted, but the tracks in and around the camp are more interesting at the moment. Between the master trackers of the party, a set of very small footprints are found leading all around the camp to the places where everyone slept (or brooded) and then off into the rocks and trees beside the trail.
Following these tracks leads the Agents to a cache of quickly hidden silver weaponry that they easily recognize as their own. Something is not right in the Fist.

Sigvar sits down and puts his chin on his fist and thinks. Michael had been talking quite a bit with the old man, and had been the one that was with hiim most of the night last night swapping stories and generally having a good time. Could the old man have dominated him? Sigvar recalls what he knows and has seen.... The tracks are small and seem to originate in the camp, travel all around to their gear piles and then to the spot where the weapos were found. There were multiple trips and it seems that some of the heavier gear was dragged there. Michael had been uncharacteristically clumsy around the Fist while they were trying to detect undead and get to the heart of the matter. Sigvar had seen the halfling drink, and often wondered if he had a secret bladder that he hid somewhere to put so much alcohol away and not show it. He had spoiled Anna's scroll before she found more undead in the crowd. Michael had tackled Prudence when she could have done something to stop the old man's escape, claiming he was trying to protect her from the Vampire. Less than an hour later he scolded Prudence's mother , putting Prudence on a pedestal saying she was the most capable member of the team and that she was admired. This was true, but if he believed that then why tackle her? The weapons were hidden and not taken away because the person that did it was still here. Sigvar was growing concerned that Michael was not in control of all of his actions. Did the Vampire have the minds of other Fist members in his pocket? What would happen if they caught Michael? Would the Vampire sacrifice him to try and hurt the Fist? Without knowing who the Vampire might have already dominated, Sigvar didn't know who to tell about this. Anna seemed to be acting to thwart him, maybe she was a good one to confide in. The Minotaur rose to his hooves and called out to Anna in the language of his people, because he knew she spoke it. In Tauric " Anna, I think the Vampire has taken over Michael's mind. Michael spent alot of time with the old man, giving him plenty of opportunity. He made your scroll fizzle, tackled Prudence and is the only one of us besides you that could have left such small tracks removing the weapons and hiding them. Is there a way we can free his mind without him knowing and ask him? If the old man has had him for the past two days and we didn't see it, how many of us has he already dominated? I am wholeheartedly behind saving Verity, but I think we might be in this too deep. What should we do?" The questions were also a kind of test, because he knew what they HAD to do. They HAD to press on even if it meant their lives because Prudence would even if she were alone. His honor wouldn't allow that to happen, so his path was clear. Anna would know that, the Vampire may not If she said to turn back, he would suspect that she also had been dominated as she spent time with the old man as well. Why couldn't they fight stand up opponents that just wanted to kill them? All this intrigue was making his head hurt.

With the weapons now recovered, Nikolai puts his mind back to the task of saving Pru's sister. He puts his mind to work on the puzzle but says little. "Vampires can have all sorts of minions. Imps come to mind. Something that small and sneaky could easily come in, invisible, and done this. Anyway, we know now what to keep watch for. An Alarm spell might work, See Invisible or other such precautions. We have our weapons back, let's find a way into that cave. Good thing vampires must spend the day in their coffins."

Pompous grins as he takes a moment to write in his book a short note of the puzzling events around the disappearing silver weapons, then takes the silver arrows from Anna. "Good thing he doesn't. Or maybe it didn't have enough time and the silver ones were a priority. An Imp, like Nikolai said, wouldn't be able to take them far and have time to return for the magic items."
He looks at the area Nikolai hopes to gather the Fist close enough to the cave entrance but out of direct sight of it. Survival +9 (find a spot behind a rock or tree where they can wait unseen for the scout to return) = 18
He finds a better spot and points it out. "Nothing is guaranteed, but that spot looks better. Pru can cast her Invisibility spell on Nikolai unseen by any watcher in the cave and Nikolai will have enough time to get to the entrance, spend a moment to scout, and maybe get back before the spell expires."

However he did ruin my spell and for some reason the Grandfather himself didn't show up as undead. Should I try to pull a scroll of protection from evil from my bag of tricks?"}
If the Taur gives the go ahead she does as he suggests, pulls a scroll of protection from evil then gets near Michael and attempts to cast it on him. (21 vs DC 21 = success) and Michael gets a +2 and a re-roll against any mind control.

While Nikolai is scouting the cave entrance and everyone else is requiping themselves with their silver weaponry, Sigvar and Anna hatch a plan.
Sigvar distracts Michael, who is showing some signs of confusion, wondering if he really could be behind all the shenanigans that have been going on. Anna approaches him from behind and casts a spell on him, which shocks him momentarily, and perhaps does something more.

Anna is his friend and Fist Mate, and he's had spells cast on him before, with no compulsion to do otherwise he embraces the spell. He instantly notices the lifting of a dark presence from his mind, suddenly he is conscious of the control being imposed upon him, memories come flooding back and in the space the darkness was he sees the path it took to control. mentally he walls up the path and bars the door to his will. Its gone for now, but will it return once Anna's spell expires?
he stumbles a bit, puts his hand to his head, then turns to his companions. Nikolai...guys...I've been compromised, the Vampire did something to me, he was giving me commands to meddle with the mission then either making me forget of make up an excuse. I...I...I'm sorry I wasn't strong enough to fight him off...I'm sorry I screwed up your Spell Anna, I'm sorry I pushed you down Pru. and I'm terribly sorry I hid all your silver weapons. He begins to pull off his weapons and armor, I think I should be taken into custody pending the end of this matter for the Fists safety.

Sigvar reaches out as Michael stumbles, putting a hand on his shoulder to steady him. " Is the compulsion something that can be dispelled? Cuz I don't think disarming you is the answer. Lets face it, there is going to be a fair amount of killing once we get in there, and I can think of no better killer than you in our group, and I mean that in the best light possible. Prudence, can the mind control be dispelled like a spell can, or is it something more organic that a vampire can do just through his force of personality? Trayvin, do you know?"

Unaware of Anna and Sigvar's plan and suspecting an outside force to be the culprit rather than one of their own, Nikolai is a bit surprised at the revelation. However he quickly recovers, as dealing with vampires, anything can happen.
"Well, it would have to be someone who knew exactly where our silver weapons are, and Michael, don't fret over it. It could have been anyone of us as we all were in contact with the vampire. It only takes a second for a vampire to capture an unsuspecting victim. However, as far as permanently breaking the link, [/I]Dispel Magic or Dispel Evil[/I] come to mind once a link is established. If the vampire asks Michael to do something that's against his own nature, Michael's own will may be able to break the link. This vampire, though, would seem smart enough not to go that far. In any case, if he is awake, he'll know the link has been temporarily suppressed but may not know exactly why. We need to hurry and get in there while it is daylight.
Let's get to that spot Pompous pointed out and get our rescue plan in motion."
The plan being, cast Invisibility on Nikolai from a spot close to the entrance but not observable from it and Nikolai scouting the entrance to see if anything is guarding it.

Several mysteries seem to have been solved at once - it seems the vampire was compelling Michael to get up to all sorts of mischief. His control was subtle enough that it would not be noticed right away, but it got to be too much for Michael's friends not to see it.
Michael makes his apologies, and suggests that he be confined until the vampire is dealt with. Pru tells him to soldier up though, as they can't waste someone to watch him and they need his talents. They'll just have to make sure he doesn't fall under the vampire's spell again. Trayvin has some plans for that.
Nikolai invisibly approaches the lair, but sees no guards about. The entranceway is a simple hole in the side of the cliff. He can't see more than a few feet inside.

In the meantime, try to keep your thoughts completely away from the fact that you now know he's got a link to your will. In the meantime, focus on the task at hand."
Trusting in his stealth and invisibility, Nikolai steps inside the cave entrance enough so that his half-elven eyes can see a little farther inside. Keenly aware there may be a trap, he prays to Alemi to keep him safe, although he wonders if praying to Gargul would be more appropriate here.
If he manages to get inside for a better look, he has low light vision, he then returns to report what he finds.

Speaking of traps, when the torch is pulled out, Nikolai's keen eyes catch the edges of a pressure plate spanning the floor just inside the cave entrance.
Unfortunately, the placement of the cave doesn't lend itself to having alternative entrances. From what you have heard about this place, it seems the vamps were relying on rumours keeping people afraid to come up this way. Any structural damage would likely collapse the entire thing, which isn't an attractive option if Verity is trapped inside, like they think she might be.

IC: Nikolai whispers to Tinker and tosses a small pebble next to the trap to show him where it is, the dwarf focuses on it and goes to work. Meanwhile, the others start to gather and Nikolai looks for a way around the trap. If he sees one, he'll head in a little further (20'), without light if invisible, with his Everburning Torch if now visible.

While Tinker and Michael work on the trap (which they easily disarm), Nikolai makes his silent way down the passageway past the range of their light. Beyond the entranceway is a short hallway that ranges from 5 to 8 feet wide and is simple and rough. After a couple turns, the walls open up, and from the feel of the air, Nikolai has found a large room, though without light, he cannot tell how far it extends. There are no sounds from within.
There are some tracks leading up to the cave, as of several humanoids. But all trace of tracks stops at the entrance.

Tinker and Nikoli aught to be up front. that way ya'll can watch me for any influence, Trayvin, Sigvar behind us, followed by Anna and Pru. This puts Trayvin where he can cast his protection from Evil spell from a position in the middle and Sig can crush me should I go nuts and start killing folk. Anna can provide overwatch and has the time to change into something more apropos and protect our spell slinger. Pur can bring down the wrath of the gods from a position of safety.
Michael shrugs, wipes his hands off draws his blades and starts making his way down the hall.

Nikolai returns with the news of a room further down and hears Michael's marching order plan. "OK, sounds good to me. Let's get in place then. It is completely dark in there so we'll need the light, which will spoil any surprise but that can't be helped. Just be ready for anything jumping out of the shadows."
Nikolai takes the lead and brandishes his Everburning Torch. Michael follows and Tinker is close behind Michael. The others fall in behind as planned. Nikolai leads the way to the room, moving cautiously although trying to be real quiet this time is pointless.

He might make me not see him or his agents if he is planning an ambush.

The Agents proceed past the hallway. Their lights reveal a large cavern, 100 feet or so in diameter. Pru's dancing lights zip around, revealing several openings on the sides of the chamber. 10 in total. It is dark and quiet other than the lights they are holding and Pru's lights roaming at her direction.

Having been unable to find anything while he looked in the past, Sigvar still tries to keep a lookout for trouble. Perception 30 He also notices that the spellcasters ignoring Anna's attempt to prepare for the coming fight. With one of their number already controlled and a Vampire no slouch as an opponent, not to mention the fact that the old man has already walked in circles around Sigvar unseen He would expect more concern. "I guess I will just need to kill him in the limited time I will have with the potion Anna. At double the cost you could pull another potion. That way no one has to stop what they are doing to allow me to keep hurting him." Sigvar hoped it was just 'him', by now it could be 'them', or even 'all of them'.

Sigvar does the battle math. He explains what he figures out to Anna, in Tauric, to help her decisions. " No one has magical silver weapons. So Tinker Michael and Nicolai will still need enchantments on ther weapons. Pompous fires three arrows per round, unhasted. His bow will enchant them, so he is covered for magic, but needs more silver arrows to be in the fight for more than a few seconds. Also, if the old man is half as smart as I think he is, he will use hit and run so that people like me and the rogues can not close and use out talents against him, so Pompous and Prudence will be doing alot of the heavy lifting in this fight. That said he will probably shield himself from magic missiles and protect himself from fire, so Prudence might be in trouble damagewise as well. He might ward himself against arrows, like Prudence can, but if the arrows are already magical, like Pompous's bow makes them, I think they will not be affected. The rest of us will be unable to hurt him with arrows or thrown weapons though. These are the things I would do to win this fight. He is far smarter than I am, so he may have even more ploys." We bunched up nicely for that fireball. You would think after watching Prudence do it we would be better prepared. Reflex save 8 huge fail Sigvar feels his flesh and good deal of his gear crisp under the intense heat from the fireball. The question was, was this a minion, a spawn, or was it the real deal? The only way to learn that was to get out there and find the caster. He knew the risks. There could easily be a pit out there with his name on it. But taking risks was what made soldiers live instead of die. With a deep throated roar he surged forward, taking his torch with him to light the room for Pompous and Prudence to return fire. As he moved he drew his silver blade ( if it wasn't drawn already, DM's choice, but it IS free with a move...anyway) If he reaches an enemy, he will attack, if not he activates his Brahmah's Tattoo to heal himself a little. Attack roll hits AC 19 for 11 damage ( and now I pay for all those awesome perception rolls ) Perception 18 to see a target and point it out If no target is within reach activate the tattoo for 8 healing ( rerolled the 1)

Hyped for Danger, Michael is drawn tighter than a cat falling in a lake, He sees the fireball coming and rolls forward beneath it and out of its blast range. This also puts him closer to the person or thing casting the spell.

he then rushes forward to engage the enemy, better near the enemy than waiting to be dominated and posing a danger to his friends. He sees that Sigvar has already rushed forward, he lays in beside and slightly behind the big beast of a Minotaur, ready to exploit any opening the Armored behemoth provides for him.

Just in time, too, as a fireball erupts at the entrance and the mocking vampire cackle. More light is needed to dispel the darkness that hides the vampire so he moves into the room to help shed some light. He is aware that the vampire may be able to use magic and thus be invisible, so as he moves, he waves the Everburning Torch in front of him. He moves next to Anna and looks for the evil vampire.

Many things begin happening all at once. The brave Agents charge into the room, spreading themselves so another ball of fire will not be so effective. The light reveals spawn such as they fought before lurking in the middle of the cavern, as if waiting for their prey to arrive. Sigvar cuts his sword through one of them, and it looks quite damaged already. Michael's silver rapier cuts through it soon after, and it turns into mist.
There is no sign of the master vampire, who may well be invisible, as Nikolai surmised. The Agents cast spells to prepare themselves for the onslaught.
Trayvin centers a spell around himself to guard against negative creatures. Unfortunately, Michael is just outside of the effect and seems to be under the vampire's spell!

The revealed spawn swarm in around Trayvin and Michael, ready to do their worst. Michael suddenly drops flat on the ground and stops moving altogether! Two of the spawn rush in to attack him, though one cannot make it through his armor. The other latches on though, dealing 4 damage and causing a DC14 fort save or take one negative level (I was doing it incorrectly before, sorry)
The other one attacks Sigvar, but is not able to penetrate his defenses. [i]Sigvar can make one AoO against VS3 that attacked Michael. There is more cackling echoing through the cavern. It seems the vampire is not impressed by your efforts.

Michael thought he was ready for it. with Annas spell he was able to push the Vampires influence from his mind and wall it up. but then the spell wore off the spawn attacked and when the Master flexed his control it broke through his will like a hammer crushes an egg.
No subtle urgings this time, no cognative dissonace, or double think. All thoughts leave his head as the command of a god fills his head like the sun fills the sky. he drops like a stone where he lay.
Dimly the attack of the spawn reach his consciousness, but it's like a dream, the sounds of battle, the shouts of his teammates all bounce off the shell of the Masters control. Still the core of his being resists to it's utmost the negative energy of the hits.

Sigvar easily poofs all the little spawn running past him at Michael into clouds of gas with his sword sneaking out into their paths in a most unexpected fashion. Tinker and Pompous easily handle the other two foes, and their little gas clouds start moving off to different corners of the room. Michael does not in fact take the attack
Pru moves up to share some magical speed with her other allies, but the Vampire's inaction last round reveals itself to be a ploy, and she finds her spell countered! Caster level check for Dispel Magic 27 - counterspell held action successful - Tinker, Sigvar, and Anna are not hasted.
What's more, a loud gong-like sound goes off in Pru's ear soon after, disrupting her spellcasting ability. no spells with a verbal component can be cast without a concentration check of DC 15+spell level
Four more spawn drop from where they were hiding on the ceiling out of sight, wisely avoiding the silver taloned taur.
They have no luck getting past Tinker's armor, but one gets a solid blow on Pompous (nat 20, no crit). Pompous takes 3 damage and makes a DC14 fort save or takes one negative level.

OOC: DM Info If Pompous has Precise Strike, it should work, if not, it won't work. The Feat is in the APG under Precise Strike and is allowed for Agents of The Fist Characters. The interpretation is a bit loose but it could mean the monster has to have vulnerable area, so a hit to the heart with a silver weapon on a vampire might be considered a Precise Strike qualifier.

Sigvar easily poofs another foe and begins on another, which is followed by a gore from Anna.
Michael lies prone and silently screaming against the vampire's compulsion. He feels orders trying to get through, but Trayvin's magic prevents any new things from taking hold.
Nikolai and Pru do some more damage. Pompous callously fires into the spawn next to him, provoking their attacks, but rightfully trusting his agility to protect him (2 AoO misses). He finishes poofing one and tries another.
The master's invisibility drops to his surprise! Luckily Trayvin was just outside the range of the chime's effect, only 30 feet to his own spell's 45.
"No Matter. I will destroy you whether or not you see me!"
Seeing that his minions are pretty much useless, he drops another ball of fire in the middle of the group, not caring that he toasts one of his own. Anna, Sigvar, Pru, Michael, Tinker, Trayvin - 23 damage (DC21 Reflex for 11 damage instead.
The last standing spawn manages another precise strike on Pompous somehow, though it does not inflict a crit. 5 damage and DC14 fort or take 1 negative level

Reflex save 22 saves 11 damage taken Sigvar manages to raise his shield just fast enough to deflect some of the incoming fireball, but he is no closer to being able to hit the Vampire. At Trayvin's shout he reaches out and touches the cleric, feeling the spell's magic wash over him, too late for this fireball, but insurance against the next one. Unable to strike the vampire, he drops his everburning torch and transfers his sword to his shield hand (gotta love light shields) and reaches into his belt pouch. Finding what he is after he launches the vial at the vampire. Throw a vial of holy water Hit touch AC 25 for 6 damage " We either need to be able to get up there or get him down here. lying still and taking a fireball is not something that Michael would do His spirit rails against the impending doom and he breaks free, with Trayvins help of course. His control back in his own hands he flips behind Trayvin to shield himself from the blast. He then whips out a Alchemists Fire from his pocket and flings it at the master.

Sigvar shields himself and pops a bottle of holy water on the vamp. ouch!
Pompous pops the bloodsucker next to him after nimbly evading its AoO. Since his first arrow turned it into gas, he switched his next 3 shots to the master, and the first connects! He hisses in pain from the silver, but you notice that the electricity just dissipated on contact with his body.
Nikolai retrieves the bag from his bag.
Michael's instincts kick in, but unfortunately not before the fire washes over him. no bucking control until something actually happens, sorry. He does pay the vampire back in kind, though he doesn't seem to be as bothered by fire vial as the holy water.
Anna moves to get into position so she can attack from above. I bet no one expected an Arsinotherium to charge up a wall.
The Vampire seems to have decided that he doesn't like you being so mobile, and having correctly deduced the spell Trayvin cast (nat 20 spellcraft), he casts another spell. Pru, surprising herself, identifies it as a web spell and successfully counters it! She knows it was a close call though, and a more powerful spell would have taken more effort to counter.
The vampire hisses in aggravation as his latest efforts are foiled by some well prepared Agents! True to his kind, his wounds begin to heal almost immediately, though he is still visibly hurt.

If it's on her spell list, she will counter with the same spell. Although that may limit her to first-level spells.
If it isn't on her spell list, and she can cast a third-level spell, she'll try to counter with a Dispel Magic. Caster level check for that is 30.

Sigvar waits to see if Anna can bring the vampire to the ground, if she can, he attacks it with his sword only. His shield will not do enough damage and he doesn't think he will be able to knock the creature prone with it, so he doesn't use it. As the Agents, and more importantly, their light sources, make their way further into the cave, they see several alcoves, which they assume hold more coffins for the spawn to retreat into. The Master keeps making his way back towards a smaller, but more well constructed alcove in the back of the cave. Unfortunately for him, the ceiling is also getting lower, and he decides to beat a hasty retreat into the mouth of the small passage, hoping to get some advantage from the smaller space.

Reaching for a seldom-used spell, she tosses a web into the tunnel opening, centering it on the square the vampire is standing in. He can make a DC 18 Reflex save to avoid being actually grappled by the Web, but even then, he'll still be in it and have trouble moving around.

The bats do no damage to Sigvar, his Adamantine plate armor fends them off. Since no damage was dealt, no bleeding sould have happened. Sigvar watches the vampire run, clearly Pompous has been hurting it, enough to break it's calm assurance that it would win. But it is headed for a small doorway, one it may be able to bar, one that will at least slow Sigvar from getting to it. Then the others ineffectually attack it, using only silver, not magical silver. Enough was enough, this needed to end. Lowering his head Sigvar charged the vampire. He would get one attack, and it needed to count. The charge went through perfectly. Sigvar slammed his magical silver blade into the Vampire as hard as he could, and Trayvin's magic made the strike even more potent. Attack hits AC 38, critical threat confirmed by Bless Weapon, 30 damage total (Magical and Silver) Sigvar has -2 to his AC this round due to charging.

Sigvar charges in with a mighty blow of his sword, easily blowing past all of the Vampire's defenses. Trayvin hurries after him, keeping his aura of protection up, unfortunately outpacing Michael as he stops to take a potshot.
Michael's slingstone connects solidly, but he is no longer covered by the aura of goodness emanating from Trayvin.
Anna keeps up the pressure from above and Tinker readies himself to restrain his foe.
Pru calls up some rare magics for her, and in a strange twist of fate (ie the DM accidentally rolling in his other game and re-rolling here) it snagged him up, just in time for Nikolai's kama to slice through him. If that wasn't enough, Pompous sends a final arrow hurtling through the cave to piece the vampire right in the chest.
The vampire goes limp, suspended in the webbing of the alcove. The bats chitter for a moment and disperse, the mind controlling them having stopped its communications, and Michael feels a dark cloud lift from his head. For a moment, everything is quiet, other than the heavy breathing of the Agents.
The vampire is down for the moment, but his wounds are still regenerating, so who knows when he may spring back into action?

Fearing the worst, Pru finds the simple latch and throws open the lid of the coffin. Inside, her sister sits up, almost bumping heads with Pru in her haste to breathe clean, fresh air (at least compared to inside the coffin). She looks much as she did at her wedding ceremony, though a bit more rumpled, and with a large black diamond hanging from a chain around her neck.
The others looking through the alcove see a tripod set up behind the coffin area with a small glass sphere on top. It reflects the light a bit, and seems to have images of dark clouds swirling through it. There is also a closed chest to one side, though it may have been shut in haste as there are several bits of fabric poking out of the seam.
Anna prowls through the larger cave, ready to fight off any spawn that decide to come back to the fight, but there is no sign of them yet. She does hear the chime still ringing towards the front of the cave though.

in any case, he does not open the chest while standing right in front of it. the same way you don't turn over a log by pushing it away from you, whereby you give the snake beneath a clear path to you, you pull it towards you, leaving the bulk of the log between you and the snake. If the chest is trapped by a rune or poison pulling it open from behind might give him some protection from the trap.

To all senses, magical and otherwise, Verity is perfectly healthy. She is plenty angry however, though it seems to be directed to the vampires, rather than at the Agents or her sister.
"I'm so sorry, Pru, and to all of you. I'm sure much of the hostility shown in town was due to that Vampire's influence. Was Zoonor even his grandson? Did I even love him? I don't think I'll ever really know."
She seems sad, but not depressed. She's been through a lot. Maybe she did love Zoonor, or maybe she was just under the Vampire's spell.
She doesn't have any bite marks, and doesn't radiate any magic. Neither does the diamond.
There is some magic from the chest though, and two fancy vests glow with it. One is red with gold trim, the other is almost a cape with arm holes, and is green with embroidered animals of all kinds. The orb on its stand also glows with magic, as does the chime that Anna digs out of a small hole in the cave. The Agents deem it safe to see the Vampire to his final end.

Sigvar moves off and starts dispatching the spawn. He systematically uses wood from the coffins he opens to stake each spawn and then remove it's head with the enchanted silver sword. If their coffin is not wood, he uses the stakes he made earlier. When it becomes clear that Verity is alright he stops, lifts the old man up by his foot and beheads him, finishing the fight and delivering his soul to Gargul for judgement.

He's glad that the diamond seems to be a normal one, probably of great worth, but what will Verity do with it? He can't help but be queasy about hidden curses from vampires...
"Pru, was Verity the only one here still in control of themselves?" he asks worriedly. It would be hard on the village if there were one or more villagers here the vampire already preyed upon.

"No - I was the only one here. Many in the town were under his influence, but I'm sure that broke when you slayed him like it did me. I just hope that Zoonor was under his influence too. I would hate to think that his behavior just runs in the family."
The chime has stopped ringing for the now, but there is much potential in such an item. Perhaps Pru would prefer someone else use it though, to keep it from affecting her.
The spawn souls have been freed and soon after, so has their maker. They drag the bodies outside to dissolve in the sun, which has come out from behind the unnaturally thick layer of clouds for the first time in days. Verity takes the diamond off of her neck, preferring to rid herself of any "gifts" from the old vampire. She would prefer to excise all of his influence from her life.
There was little of value in the cave other than the magical items and the diamond.

All the spawn in the cave have just started regenerating. Those that looked like they were getting close to being in fighting shape again lack any direction with the death of their creator and don't put up any resistance to being staked. coup de grace -able in effect
Now that the danger seems to have passed, there are excited feelings for going shopping, though there is not too much of interest to the Agents in this town and they don't have a good way of getting to the Catacombs until they get back to the Citadel. Sigvar reminds them that they aren't out of the woods yet, and should remain vigilant until everyone is safely back in town.
There is nothing else found in the cave, unless they want to lug around a normal chest and a fancy used coffin.
The climb down the cliffs is much easier than the ascent, and Verity seems to have a load lifted off her shoulders as she breathes free air. In a couple of hours, they are walking back into town with the sun shining at their backs and a huge crowd of people waiting to see what happened in the cliffs.

Before they leave the lair Sigvar has a request for Prudence. " I have heard that some spellcasters can hide their souls inside objects, usually valuable objects. This is one way to escape Gargul's judgement. Magic would be required to do this. Now that the old man has been dispatched, would you please examine the diamond pendant again to be sure he has not played a final trick on us and hidden his soul in the diamond, only to rise again once we have handed it off to an unsuspecting merchant?" Once that is done he assists in pulling the coffins with the staked spawn outside. On the way down the mountain he talks about what they could do with the items in the Vampire's hoard. " The orb is a powerful item. It may not be useful to us on a day to day basis, but what organization would not benefit from being able to control the weather on the battlefield? I think we should offer to sell it to the Fist rather than just pawn it in the catacombs. The chime could also be a game changer, but I don't think we need it to defeat a spellcaster in battle."

Trayvin sees the crowd and thinks some assistance to the expected discussion may be of use. As they get closer, he uses his Touch of Glory ability on Nikolai, Pru, Sigvar, Anna, and Michael.

We've been lucky, most of the thugs we fight don't screen their spell casters really well. but all it would take is one spell slinger with a good meat shield and we could have done to us what we do to our enemies. That chime could give us a distinct advantage. Keeping those items would seriously undercut the GP distro though. on the other hand, turning it into the Fist exchange would give us some serious clout as far as weapon exchange is concerned. the gold difference is going to be about...lets see...carry the 2...about 4000 gp difference...4900 thereabouts if we sell. 900 if we keep.

Nikolai puts the coffins on fire once the spawn and lord are vaporized by the sun. He does so making sure the burning coffins don't start a forest fire!
He remains quiet on the way back. Not much to say. The Team worked superbly together and the results showed.
"Although I know Pru can take care of herself, if indeed she were incapacitated in some way, this chime would not hurt her but hinder any opposing spellcaster, mage or cleric, so I think it good to keep even if the occasion to use it is rare. Just my thoughts."
In town, he wants this to be Pru's moment to shine so he remains in the background unless called forth.

Sigvar's worries seem unfounded. It seems the vampire is well and truly gone from this world.
Trayvin prepares the group for an encounter with the townsfolk, but the general air is of confusion. Some memories seem to have been lost. Other people are glad to see that their loved ones are back to acting normally. When Anna explains that the vampire that had been dominating them is gone, there is a sense of relief. The two vampire hunters seem a little disappointed that they weren't a part of the eradication, but are also glad that they didn't kill an innocent man.
Michael thinks about the money and Pompous records his great deed.
Ever pragmatic, Nikolai plans for future encounters, and uses of new loot and new abilities.
Pru tries to engage her sister on the trip back, but Verity seems a bit in denial about what happened to her. Prior to that, everything seemed a bit of a whirlwind. Reflecting on her engagement, it did seem a bit rushed. The vampire must have been influencing them from the beginning, though the kindly grandfather figure remained in secret.
Zoonor seems the most impacted by the domination. He was likely under the vampire's sway for the longest time. It seems that it was his grandfather, though how long he had been a vampire was anyone's guess. He remembers little of his engagement, and is quite shy around Verity. He apologizes for the problems his grandfather caused, and has a lot of stuff to figure out now that he is free.

Trayvin checks the willing villagers for any injuries they may have suffered from the brawl at the wedding ceremony. He is relieved that the Agents may have prevented a significant problem at this town and maybe saved a lot of people.

Pru escorts Verity back to their parents. "Is everyone all right?" she asks them. She's hoping they will talk to her, reach out to her, say something that isn't about the wedding or the vampires, something to indicate that they're glad Prudence is their daughter and they want her back in their lives. And she's afraid that she's destined to be disappointed yet again.

Anna walks with Pru and Verity back to their family's home. Anna hangs back when the 2 sisters head inside sensing that this may be something the family might want to share just with themselves. She takes this time to reflect on what might be of her birth parents and if she has any siblings though one could argue that Ma'ab was her mother now as her Queen has bequeathed her a new name to go with her abilities.

Pru returns Verity to the overjoyed arms of the rest of the family. Pru may not be the favourite, but rescuing the oldest child does a lot to restore their faith in their wayward daughter and hugs are given all around. Her mother was still a bit reticent, but Sigvar's boasting about Pru dispelling all sorts of harmful magic must have tipped her over a bit. That takes a powerful amount of control. Her mother humbly thanks Pru for saving Verity.
Nikolai wonders about some sort of reward for the erstwhile hunters. Sigvar thinks that the best reward is to combat the misinformation that seems to plague people about the undead and how to properly protect against them.
The situation makes some of the Agents think about their families as well and their purpose in life. Whatever help they need, it will be in the Citadel waiting for them.
The mayor of the town approaches them. "I wish to offer a heartfelt thank from the town for all you've done. You could have turned away, and I wouldn't have been surprised with the welcome we gave you. Please take this as a token of our appreciation."
He presents Nikolai with what looks like a box about a foot long. However, when given the proper commands, it can extend itself out into a small boat, and then again into a proper sailing ship! This should make the trip home a bit easier!
Tinker expresses his regret that he cannot come with them though. Seeing his own family did something to him, and he can't let something happen to them again. Not while he can help it. He tells the group that he must return to them and help protect their operation. He hopes he will see them again in the future, and will certainly pay a visit with the whole tribe to the Citadel someday.

It must be some trick of the light, or maybe there is a tear in Trayvin's eye as he turns away.

In a month you will not fit into your armor ad in two your fingers will be so fat you won't be able to work a lock. You will have to mine 20 hours a day to keep the weight off from their home cooking. Wouldn't it be easier to just face death with us every day and sleep on the cold ground?" He extends his hand to the dwarf that welcomed him to the Agents and shakes for a bit longer than is necessary. To Tinker he whispers, " Contact us if they need help again. The trolls were fun and the cooking was fabulous."

"Tinker, I had a feeling, from what I noticed of your demeanor since we left your family that you might decide to go back and help them out, for a while at least. You have been a great asset to us and will be much missed. Take care of your family and return to us if you get tired of digging dirt with those hands and want some real action, eh?
Nikolai is in no hurry to move on and spends as much time as he can with Pru's family. You never know....

"You were with us from the beginning," she says. "Remember Bliss? And Linden? And William and Carver and everybody? They've all gone. And now you're going, too. Take care of yourself."
Later, she finds Nikolai. Somewhat shocked by her own boldness, she slips her hand into his. "We're the only ones left," she says. "The only ones who were there at the beginning. Don't go anywhere, all right? I--I'd miss you."

As happy as they are to stay and catchup with family, all good things must come to an end, including this vacation turned monster hunt. They saved two families, and while they are losing a loved one to his own, Pru has regained the love of hers, or at least re-established a dialogue (in the case of her mother, who still isn't completely convinced her daughter isn't some sort of demon.)
All that's left is to decide how to get home. If they use their new boat and don't mind some rowing, they could probably save a couple of days travel (assuming someone knows enough about sailing to keep them on course.)
