Micah (John) HP: 46/46 AC: 23/12/23 CMD:17
Monday September 4th, 2017 5:56:06 PM

"Hearing no significant objections, let us go to the turtle," concludes Micah.

He then turns to the druid, "Ma'am, as soon as we are finished with our preparations, please lead the way."

Noticing that Stohp is keeping an eye on Briadoc, he catches her eye and nods encouragement.

He then turns his attention back to the wagon. "We need some of these spores for evaluation and possible development of an antidote, but this stuff it too dangerous to keep much of. Let us destroy everything but a couple of pounds." With this he begins to unload the hazardous cargo and take it outside for burning.

"Turtle it is. Let's get going."

Loading the last of the loot onto the wagon, Zander is ready to head out. He aids Micah in securing and destroying the insidious seed.

"Thanks friend I appreciate it," says Lavinia, swigging the potion in a few gulps. She sighs happily.

"Tastes rubbish but I feel so much better" she turns to Stock.

"Where did I go? Huh? Me and Sasha just snuck round the back to get a different view and we saw Jella tied up and rushed in to go help her. I was gonna try and sneak in with all the action but one of them saw me apparently." She shrugs, nonplussed. "Guess I can't sneak past them all. And what do you mean you thought I'd be working with him? Just cos we're both halflings doesn't mean I'd instantly be working with him. Sasha and I forge our own path. Of pain and stupidity it seems. But yes, next time I'll try to give some warning. "

Lavinia and Stock discuss future tactics. Stohp takes it upon herself to prevent Briadoc from running off. The taur is correct in that he seems disinclined to go anywhere at the moment.

Micah and Zanderallen keep a pouch of the seed, and burn the rest.

The rest of the team finishes loading the wagon.

Jella answers Bartomus. “Well, I am not sure exactly. I was not there. I was told giant elementals attacked, announcing that they were Darkwood. Some of our Circle have been tracking them, but I asked to be left out of it until they found someone I could kill.”

The words are spoken in the same soft sing song voice, but still the emotion is evident. The woman pauses a second to recompose herself.

“There is an elf named Tionel who was a member of my father’s group, the Crimson Shields of Hope. He lives in Elvenguard, but sometimes visits. I can leave word for him if you like.”

“In the meantime…” Jella has spotted the beetle, and walks over to the nearby crops and cuts off a goodly hunk of vegetation. “Beetles live to eat,” she says, and she walks over and wave the leaves in front of the creature’s face. It eventually turns, and follows the druid out the gate. She walks along the road to the west, waving the leaves, and the enormous bug continues to follow. Arriving at the crops, the beetle pauses, lowers its head, and quickly devours what is in front of it. But it never stops walking. Having been pointed in a direction by Jella, it just keeps moving that way, consuming everything in front of it.

“Here we go,” Jella announces, and falls in behind the creature. The Shields find that even pulling the wagon, they can move at a leisurely pace.

As the group closes in on the wall of twisting vegetation, the plant’s movements cease, as if suppressed. The beetle enters the completely docile Woods, eating a ten foot wide path as he goes. The Shields and Jella follow, walking a pristine cut path, and accompanied by a sensation of protective gratitude.

After traveling about a hundred feet, the group hears a crash behind them. Turning around, they are witness to the Wood retaking the farm. The well-ordered crop rows are already gone, the plants growing into enormous leafy bushes only to be swept away by encroaching roots. The ground under the farm opens. The entire building drops nearly ten feet, only to be blasted into the air by a fully formed oak tree bursting out of the ground. The ground closes, and the oak stands majestically in a rapidly closing clearing, as the shards of boards and equipment fall like dust to the ground. The bodies of the orcs are simply consumed by flowers and thorns.

Jella watches with the Shields.

“And the Wood reclaims its own,” she whispers. Then she turns and follows the beetle.

"Glad I didn't trip on my way out here! Those plants are vicious."

Then after a short while, "We keep hearing about these Crimson Shields...Who are these guys? I feel like we've heard both good and bad about them, right? Or am I mixing up Lord Crimson and the Crimson Shields?'

Head down, Stock keeps pulling the wagon forward. He is relishing the labor and working his muscles.

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:35/35 CMD:14]

Dorbin audibly gasps as the woods engulf the clearing. He then moves up close to the wagon and the druid, staying away from the edges of the path. Emily sits on the top of the highest point of the wagon like a queen, taking a bath.

"We would greatly appreciate talking to Tionel. It seems whatever is going on in the float may be tied to something to do with the Crimson Shields. Maybe Lord Crimson was a member and turned to darkness."
Joining in hauling the wagon along Zanderallen is amazed by how easily the druid and beetle turn impassable woods into a nice easy path. He is just thinking how much he would not want to get them angry with him in the woods when he hears a crash and jumps turning to see what caused it. He watches in horror as the forest reclaims it's own. "By all that is holy, these woods are terrifying. Jella, I am so glad you are here."

When Micah realizes what is happening to the former farm he makes sure that Briadoc notices as well. He adds no words; the woods speak loudly enough.

DM MikeK - To Cutter
Tuesday September 5th, 2017 8:51:59 PM

Within minutes, any trace of the farm has all but disappeared.

Micah makes sure Briadoc is watching, but didn’t need to worry.
“Incredible,” the halfling whispers, mouth agape.

Jella leads the group away, and talk turns to the Crimson Shields, and Lord Crimson. Might they be the same? Or is Lord Crimson a former member gone bad?
“The Crimson Shields do not go bad,” Jella states flatly. “Lord Crimson must be someone else.”
Sense Motive DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: { She doesn’t know for certain, but is just a bit biased when it comes to her father’s group. }

In answer to Stock, she replies. “The Crimson Shields were adventurers, just like you. They became powerful and famous. After Daddy…passed on…some of them left. A few others joined with another band, and eventually became the Grey Dragons. They have since retired from adventuring, although Paragon Belkior remains active in the city. He sits on the High Council."

The journey continues for two days. Jella is able to keep the beetle on course. And that protective presence never wains. Briadoc has absolutely no interest in escaping.

Bartomus had followed the party deep in his own thoughts. He had watched the forest reclaim the outpost that Lord Crimson had sponsored. It was impressively frightening how quickly the forest wiped away the intrusion into its domain.

He found himself marching along and suddenly paying attention to Jella's discussion of the High Council. "Was there a follower of the Crimson Shields, some one who wanted to be part of them, that could be this Lord Crimson then?"

Bartomus continued to walk as he waited to see what others thought and was amazed at the amount the beetle ate.

Lavinia has a great interest in discussing the forest with Jella, comparing it to the Culverwood and asking her opinions on why it is so different. And does she know the reason it became so angry in the first place?

She also has questions about Mittiri, a god she has only heard of in passing through conversation with the druids of the Sacred Circle.

Wednesday September 6th, 2017 5:56:32 AM

Stohp watches the rapid magical growth and destruction with interest. Sure she'd heard the stories and rather expected something like that, but it's another thing entirely to see it. Afterwards she stays quiet, lost in thought and enjoying the quiet walk.

Stock looks at Jella, tilts his head, and says, "I see...Belkior...sounds familiar...is Paragon his name or his title?"

Then later, "...now that's an interesting thought, Bartomus. Somebody whose jealousy over not being a Crimson Shield drove him to want to take part of their name..."

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:35/35 CMD:14]
Wednesday September 6th, 2017 11:47:36 AM

Dorbin walks with the others quietly, but watching his step. He figures with as much as that beetle is eating, he doesn't want to walk directly behind it. But he doesn't want to walk too close to the edges of the wood, either...

Catching Jella's bias towards her father's old adventuring group Zanderallen quickly apologizes, although he isn't so sure himself, "My apologies. I meant no ill towards the Crimson Shields, I was merely thinking aloud. It is more likely someone trying to stain their good name as some of my companions think." Letting Lavinia change the subject towards the forest, Zander walks along sometimes joining in the conversation and sometimes just focusing on his own thoughts. By the end of the second day he is ready to be getting out of the woods. He had been so focused on their mission he hadn't even thought how this was his first time out of the Float.

The Silver Shield continue their march, as questions and answers pass the time.
Jella answers everyone as best she’s able.

To Stock - “Paragon is a title. Belkior is a very powerful priest of Alemi. They say just being near him makes you healthier.”

To Lavinia – “I think something hurt the Crying Wood. Something very bad happened a very long time ago. I can sometimes catch a sense of deep betrayal. I do not know what it means. But, it scarred this forest, scarred it very badly I think.”

She avoids further discussion around Lord Crimson and his possible origins, and is grateful for Sid’s eager quest for stories.
“I can tell some of what I heard,” she replies. “I was not there, of course.”
What follows is quite a bit of detail concerning her father’s last adventure.
Crimson Shields – Bad Wood

However, all nice walks through malevolent, people killing plants must come to an end. And soon enough, the group emerges from the Wood in front of a small stream. The beetle turns back. The group continues over a simple but sturdy footbridge, and into a village of maybe a dozen homes.
A few people are there, and react with shouts of happiness at the sight of Jella.

“Go find your Da!” one woman tells her son. The boy, and a couple companions, race off to spread the news. Within half an hour, the woodcutters have returned, and an impromptu celebration is underway. Kegs are tapped, and the barbeque is burning. It’s going to be a fine party.

Bartomus(Rod) HP: 34/34 AC: 13 (11+2); Perc+7;Heal+8

Bartomus listened and noticed that Jella didn't answer his question and seemed to be of a manner that an answer was not forth coming. He made a mental note for researching the matter more when he returned to the Float.

When they crossed over the bridge, leaving the eating beetle for a much appreciated change in scenery - a foot bridge. "Civilization is near at hand," Bartomus said as they walked behind Jella into the village. Within a few short minutes, all was in motion, children and others about to be joined by men coming out of the woods with axes and other tools.

When the village began setting about a welcoming party for their favored druid, Bartomus offered to help where ever he could. "Please let me know where I can help out."

Micah (John) HP: 46/46 AC: 23/12/23 CMD:17

Micah is quiet throughout most the journey.

The unexpected darkness off his first night not on the Float is a bit unnerving, but with prayer and deep breathing exercises he falls asleep after only a little disquiet.

Upon arrival at the village, he is careful to stay out of the way and responsive to any directions from Jella or the villagers. "Another victory meal it appears", he says quietly to Zanderallen. "I will take care to not get between you and the food."

Stock dips his waterskin in the stream and drinks long and deep. He is pleasantly surprised by the fact that the water is cooler than he was expecting. He is also famished. His raging before and being enlarged and breaking heads all combine to have him going back for seconds and thirds of everything before losing count. He finds a place where he can still appear social while not directly participating in any of the conversation, pulls out his block of wood and carving knife and begins to go to work.

After a short while however, he gives up. His weariness contributes to an inability to keep his hands as still as he would like. As a result, the wood is not taking shape as he would like and he stops before going to far with the project.

When Dorbin smells the food he realizes that he was quite hungry. As it cooks, he stands close by, hoping to get a taste, perhaps before it is ready. He doesn't know a lot about cooking on an open fire, so he does ask quite a few questions of the cook regarding the fire, the meat, the preparation of the meat, how they know how long to cook it, and other such questions. When it is ready, he starts eating quite a bit more than someone of his size should be able to eat.

Zanderallen almost visibly relaxes as they enter the village, releasing a tension he has been holding since they entered the woods. His heart warms as he sees the village welcome Jella back, glad to return their protector to them. When he sees the food and drink being prepared a grin lights up his face, temporary feigning a hurt expression at Micah. "I might dig in but at least I have table manners. I've heard your family dine, it's hard to tell you've left the forges from all the banging you make." Zander laughs at his gibe, although most of his happiness comes from being back among buildings rather than any particular wit of his own.

Micah smiles at Zanderallen's joke. Not because it is funny--or accurate, but because it is good to not be immediately in danger.

DM MikeK - Turtle Boat
Thursday September 7th, 2017 10:26:58 PM

Bartomus offers to help, and is immediately put to work with a small team attempting to erect a large canopy tent. The taur's size comes in very handy, and the task is finished in no time.

Dorbin commences to harass, sorry, make that pester, sorry again, make that question the head cook. Fortunately, the man is more than happy to elucidate upon the art of fire pit cooking, and jabbers away as he prepares the feast.

Sid finds Randolph, the woodcutter supplying the Broken Arrow to be alive and well, and quite safe. The supplier relays that Jella was needed to help guide each wood harvest through the last strip of the Crying Wood and into the Lake. The druid had some kind of business in the Float, so the crew missed their scheduled shipment. Which would have been fine, except then Jella went missing, and well, Sid knows the rest.
OOC - DM owes Sid and company one story. I'll put it together over the weekend.

The feast gets underway. All the villagers want to know what happened, and a complete description of the adventure. Jella demures, giving the same story she gave you. She was in the Wood, and then she woke up tied to a post, and then the Silver Shields rescued her.

Sensing a better story is at hand, the villagers turn to the Shields to hear the tale.

After storytime, a few pipes and a lute make an appearance. The musicians are passable, especially if one has imbibed an ale or three, and music, laughter, and dancing fill the night.

Woodcutters are a hardy bunch, and come daylight, most all of them are up and ready for work. Cut logs are rolled into the stream, and guided down it with long polearms. The stream enters the Crying Wood, and Jella is there, striding side by side with the woodcutters.
Again, the protective presence is there. And again, the Crying Wood is suppressed.

After a short way - less than a mile - the stream empties into the lake. The woodsmen hop from floating log to floating log, expertly lashing together large, temporary rafts.

Also near the shore is a famous Turtle Boat. The gigantic turtle, whose shell is big enough to hold its current driver and all of the Silver Shields AND their wagon of loot, waits placidly.
"Who's going back?" the driver calls.
"They are," Jella calls back.

The druid turns to the Shields.
"Thank you for saving me. I do not think I ever told you that. Thank you"

"Thank you for ensuring we had safe passage and a Turtle no less,"Bartomus said and made a slight nod towards Jella. "Giant beetles, an angry wood, and turtle boats, who would have thought of it."

He takes a few steps towards the turtle and waited for the other shields.

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 48/48 AC: 25 T: 13 FF: 24 CMD: 19
Friday September 8th, 2017 11:25:51 AM

Zanderallen enjoys the meal, music, and rest, thanking the woodcutters for their hospitality, and letting them know that if something should happen again to send them a message at their headquarters. He then pulls Jella aside, "I don't know if you know already but I feel like you should. The orcs and whoever was sponsoring them were using some sort of ointment to pass through the Crying Wood unharmed. We took it all except what we had to trade to the orcs for your freedom. I don't know who other than Briadoc may know how to make it or how it works. Hopefully we won't have need of it but Crimson seems intent on using the Crying woods and we may have to stop some plan of his again. Just thought you should know. Thank you for your assistance in getting out of the woods. Stay safe." Answering any other questions Jella has Zander then pushes the wagon onto the turtle, ready to get home.

Dorbin, feeling he has made a new friend of the cook, stays with the cook for most of the celebration, hoping to learn more about cooking, hunting, and processing food.

In the morning, he heads with the others down the stream, but he walks cautiously, still not sure about the woods, despite the suppression of its anger. When they arrive at the turtle boat, instead of climbing on board, he walks around the edges of it, checking out the turtle itself. He is very curious about the actual turtle and the fact that is it being used as a boat.

Farewell and do not hesitate to get word to us should more trouble arise or even threaten. And should you ever be on the Float, look up the Silver Shields." He then takes her aside privately and adds, "I do not wish to cause you further discomfort, but the coincidence in the name of foe and your father's colleagues should be readily discounted. Should something occur to you, please let us know."

As they step on the boat, he gives a nod and wave of farewell to the druid and the villagers.

Lavinia had a whale of a time at the party. All her aches and pains washed away with the application of some strong alchohol and bad dancing. Shes sad to leave the village of Cutter behind, but alas, adventure awaits.

She bids a fond farewell to Jella before they leave.
"Hey I'm glad everything turned out well. This forest seems to have had enough heartache without adding anything else to it. I'm gonna head back with these folk and see if we can get to the bottom of this whole mystery. But Sasha and I are grateful for your guidance and knowledge. And who knows maybe we'll be back soon."

Lavinia stops and thinks for a second. "Hey maybe see about getting yourself a companion in case anyone else tries to snatch you up. Gods know where I'd be without this little lady." Lavinia scratches the panther behind one ear with a grin.

Bidding farewell to Jella and the rest of Cutter she heads to the boat.

"Hold on a minute..."

He jumps off the boat and rummages around on shore for a moment, eventually finding a small stone and putting it in a pouch at his waist.
"Can't forget a souvenir!"

He sits down again and removes his carving knife and sharpening whetstone. After putting a good edge on his knife, he gets back to carving his block of wood. After a while, his shoulders relax a bit as his work begins to take shape. It is still pretty rough but Stock seems satisfied. All that is recognizable is a slender cylinder sticking out in one direction with a fatter chunk of wood opposite the cylinder that has yet to be touched by the carving knife.

Dorbin spends more time examining the turtle and the boat. When he heard it mentioned, he thought it would be a slow boat that was shaped a little like a turtle. He is interested in the construction of the part that sits on the turtle and how it connects to the turtle (and how it doesn't fall off). He looks it over from the land, walks a little into the water, then all over as he boards the ship with the others. He then pulls out a pile of papers and writes some notes on them about the turtle ship.
