A Meeting and More (Guest DM Cayzle)
Friday August 18th, 2017 11:31:19 PM

Halfway to Noon, and time for a private meeting with Three Bits. The woman looks a little more nervous than usual ... or maybe just uncomfortable. Sense Motive DC15 Please Highlight to display spoiler: {Usually she has an air of being in command of any situation. Her affect today is that she is off balance.}

She says that today she is not asking for money. She looks almost abashed to admit that, but she says it flat out. "That's because I have already been paid. Paid to sit you all down with someone you know, and to, well, vouch for her."

"I told her, 'Look, I don't carry water for them, and we have had our ... moments.' But she don't care, and she says my rep is worth more than my news, even."

She shrugs and beckons. From the shadows, someone joins you and stands next to Three Bits. It is a halfling woman with a copper choker.

Toston Lotor(Hugh Crosmun) [HP:45/45; AC:20 Touch 18; FF 16 - CMD 21  d20+7=15 ; d20+1=6 ;
Sunday August 20th, 2017 2:02:40 PM

(Knowledge [Local] : 6)
(Sense Motive: 15)

Toston doesn't recall anything regarding oaths among the Teeth but he does get a read on Three Bits and her currently being off balance.

When the copper choker wearing halfling shows up he says, "You again? Are we finally going to get some answers about what is going on? Last time all we got was some documents that lead to a fight with some merfolk and some Teeth."

Lornak (Frank S.) HP:49/49 AC: 18(T:13/FF:10) CMD:19  d20+9=23 ; d20+9=26 ; d20+9=25 ; d20+9=14 ; d20+9=12 ;
Sunday August 20th, 2017 2:26:51 PM

Lornak creeps out of the bolt hole. He helps the others wheel the crates to Shale House and is surprised no alarms are raised along the way. It seems the altercation has gone unnoticed. He takes the time to get out of his disguise and get cleaned up. Looking like a grubber will not go very far at getting a fair price at the Catacombs when he goes. He notices that Ethani is now where to be seen. As the others take their rest he heads out to Marsh House to look for her. (Stealth d20=23)

Lornaks worry increases when he finds Marsh House empty. He mills about and greets Vin when he finds her playing with her hourglass. He tries to sleep but he tosses and turns. Eventually, he just gives up and sits up on his bed. He decides to occupy his mind since he cannot rest. He enters the alchemy corner and works on his concoctions there. He finds his Nitharit still brewing but very dry from neglect. He adds some ingredients and works the mixture. He stares at the contents of the cauldron. As time passes he gets more and more tired. The results of his efforts get weaker and weaker. He finishes the Nitharit but only just as he passes out on the work table. (Alchemy d20=26, 25, 14 and 12. 177 of target # 175).

(OOC- I haven't had the opportunities in RP to attend this so I'm taking the opportunity to wrap it up here)

He shuffles in to Shale house the next morning and joins his comrades for breakfast. "Has anyone heard from Ethani or Asteria? They were not at Marsh House."

Lornak (Frank S.) HP:49/49 AC: 18(T:13/FF:10) CMD:19  d20+8=9 ; d20+8=26 ;
Sunday August 20th, 2017 2:44:55 PM

Lornak is completely distracted with the whereabouts of Ethani that he barely tastes breakfast. The walk to Three Bits shop is a blur and the read on her is even more so. He is only snapped out of it when the halfling shapeshifter appears in the room.

Lornak becomes rigid. His words come out as more of a growl than speech; "Explain yourself. Here. Now." His eyes are on fire. "Do not leave out how long you've been watching us."

Wil stands near the back, with him arms crossed. He waits and listens to Three Bits talk.

Dušan (Erik) [HP:40/40; AC:13; Touch: 13; FF:10; CMD:15  d100=18 ;

"Paying Three Bits to "vouch for you," Dušan scoffs, "I don't know what you paid, but it was too much."

Dušan does little to hide his contempt of the rumor monger, but doesn't impede any further discourse.

(Ignore the roll. Fat fingered my phone.)

Hmerrin(HP:45/61 AC:24 T:14 FF:21 CMD:21)
Monday August 21st, 2017 7:08:32 PM

Hmerrin claims one of the potions of Bulls Str.

"Those buffs come in pretty handy, they do."

Now, the young man isn't all that fond of Three Bits. And, he's not fond of being led around on a string, which choker girl seems to have been pulling for awhile.

So, the lad isn't pleased. He steps back to let the talkers to their thing, folds his arms over his chest, puts on his his very best teenager "You could be feeding me ice cream and I'd still hate you" pout, and waits.

Dušan (Erik) [HP:40/40; AC:13; Touch: 13; FF:10; CMD:15

They say misery loves company, so Dušan sidles over to Hmerrin hoping the proximity of scowls adds to their efficacy.

Var (Tom I.) (HP:55/55 AC:17 T:13 FF:14 CMD:22)  d20+8=19 ;
Monday August 21st, 2017 8:40:59 PM

(Sense Motive: 19) Var arches an eyebrow at Three-Bit's behavior, and tries to recall if he's ever seen her so...out of sorts. This question is quickly answered when the Silverglove contact makes herself known.

Var Harrumphs. "She got you dancing along, too, Bits?"

Second First Impressions Don't Come Often (DMs Cayzle & Damarr)
Monday August 21st, 2017 9:53:00 PM

Before going to your meeting, you get a message from Ethani and Asteria. Mesick is recovering, and you can send his half a share to him at the WLA Chapterhouse. As for Ethani and Asteria, they were asked to go on an important mission for the WLA, and they are glad to let you guys have their treasure. They hope to see you all in the future.

The party is re-introduced to the copper-choker-wearing halfling, and from the varying levels of acrimony and hostility, it is clear that she should not expect a happy hello.

Toston challenges her to a full accounting at last.

Lornak, somewhat droopy-eyed after his hard alchemical work last night, perks right up at the sight of the halfling woman. He too wants answers, and his attitude brooks no prevarication! [Intimidate 26]

[OOC: What did you make, Lornak?]

Wilford waits silently. Who knows what it is that he hears in the depths of his strange mind!?

Dušan makes it clear that his opinion of Three Bits is as low -- or lower -- than his opinion of the halfling wearing the copper choker. He and Hmerrin are pointedly silent and scowling. They make their doubts clear.

Var speaks to Three Bits, a little more than somewhat disparagingly: "She got you dancing along, too, Bits?"

Three Bits frowns too. “I ain’t dancing for nobody! I’m an independent!”

The halfling looks around at the disdain and suspicion and then she sighs. “Wow, we sure got off to a bad start, and I guess I have to apologize for that. Deception comes naturally to a servant of the House of Cloaks. But I hope you will you see that here, now, in this private place, I will reveal my secrets in the hope of gaining some of your good will.”

“I am Bell Silverglove. That’s my true name and my true face, and we Cloaks seldom reveal that openly. But I want you to trust me.”

“And that’s because we are both on the same side. We want the trade with the sea-peoples to stop. We want the gem-trade to end. But here is news you may not have: We can do both with one stroke. It is the Sahuagin who are selling the Fire Gems. They seem valueless to the water-dwellers, so the merchants have been busy buying them cheap to sell high. But they are too dangerous, as you have seen. No one merchant will stop trading in the gems, for fear that the others will keep on trading, ruining the one who refrains. So it is up to us to halt the trade with the Sahuagin, and in that way to bring the gem trade to a halt.”

“I hope we can work together to accomplish this goal. I know some pieces of the puzzle. Maybe you know a few more. What a victory for evil if we cannot share our news and combine forces.”

Perhaps you are trying to bring change from within the system while we work largely outside of it, we shall see."

Toston tries to gauge from Belle how sincere she is before further sharing what they learned from the job last night. (Sense Motive: 13)

"Did you know I am more powerful now that before?" Cicero said to Will silently.
"This is not the time," Will reminded him.
"Me too," said Rebecca. "Ah, you brought a guest," Will said outloud but the intend was to reply to Rebecca.
Will then continued to the two woman. "So we have a pair of people that tried to kill us in the same room."
He frowned.
"So, what do we need to do now. Jumprope through the Knives territory and assassinate the Prince of Timbuck too?"
"How can we be sure you are not setting us up again? Outside of my skepticism, I'm struck with the desire to remove the fire elementals from Dirt City but I don't want to run around doing anything non-related."

"An alliance of convenience you mean..." Lornak says. Lornak holds in his anger but not without showing his gritted teeth for a second. "See, this is where its gets fuzzy. You've been watching for while, why are you only now coming to us with open arms, olive branch?" He lets the question linger before continuing. "Your intel proved accurate... so in that we can trust you, but why didn't you just ally with us in the open from the beginning?" (Diplomacy d20=16)

Bell Silverglove begins with an apology for the deception up until this point, to which Var gives a close approximation to a genial shrug. "'s'all business, right?"

(OoC: I may have missed something, where exactly is this meeting taking place?)

As the conversation gets going, Var saves the party from his 'rugged Half-Orc charm', and quiets down. He focuses his attention on Bell, and tries to absorb as much detail about her as possible (Perception: 21) -
"Never know when that might come in handy." Var thinks to himself

Second First Impressions (DMs Cayzle & Damarr)
Tuesday August 22nd, 2017 10:27:08 PM

((Location? Hmm.. your usual meeting place with Three Bits? Her curio shop?))

The sneaky halfling, named Bell, meets with suspicion and anger.

Toston seems to be the most willing to consider trusting the spy. Unfortunately, he can’t get a read on her true motives.

Wilford on the other hand, reveals the special insight that dreamers and madmen sometimes have. He feels that the woman is being sincere.

Var takes the apology for what it is, and uses this opportunity to note Bell’s features. He’s confident he can reliably recognize the halfling’s true face.

While not yet an ally, Hmerrin silently agrees that Bell is neither, for the moment, an enemy.

Lornak wants to know why she is showing her hand now, his distrust clear as he entreats the Cloak to share her secrets. His diplomacy check, with Dušan’s Touch of Glory and Aid-Another check (which beat DC 10 with 22) is 16 + 6 + 2 = 24.

“It’s simple,” Bell says. “Events are moving to a cusp. Soon the question of how to treat with the sea folk will reach the Prince, and he may make the wrong decision. We want to act before that. I think that if we can reach the right ears in the right group, we’ll be able to sway opinions to recommend to the Prince that we break off relations with the Sahuagin. It might be an ‘alliance of convenience,’ but that doesn’t mean we aren’t pursuing the best for everyone.”

“Believe it or not, but your reputation is growing, and you may be able to influence the influencers. From me, it just comes off as House Business. From you, maybe not. And you should’ve already uncovered some evidence that may convince fence-sitters.”

Bell levels you with a serious look. “To lay it plain, you and me, we’re making a play against a strong House, as they deal secretly with outsiders, strengthening possible enemies to the City. I’ve got my own people's’ interests in mind, no doubt, as you have yours, but we need to bring this to the light, in front of the right folks, and leverage the Teeth subterfuge to ours, and everyone else’s, benefit.”

Toston asks, "Does the name Staffing mean anything to you?" being purposely vague to try to get a better read on Belle.

If she seems legit the gnome will explain both his significance and the magic item he possesses that may make things easier for things to reach the "right ears."

With Will's sense that the woman is being truthful he puts aside animosity and prepares to dig for information.
"So are we looking to bring down a Dirt City House, the Teeth or stopping the trade with the Sagwin.. Sacquien.. fish people?"
My first thought is we need to stop the demand for the gems. We need to figure out where the fish people are getting these gems. They certainly don't need them for their war against the Merfolk so why do they have them in the first place. Profit? The houses in Dirt City would certainly be interested in that. We already took some profit from the Teeth. I wouldn't be surprised if they are pretty mad about that."
He then adds, "Did we recover any of those gems, to use?"

Lornak folds his arms over his chest as he takes in Bell's explanations. Still feeling manipulated Lornak asks again; "How long have you been "watching"?" "Better yet, who else has been actively surveilling us?"

Lornak waits for an answer.

"An alliance, convenient or not, must be mutually beneficial. I cannot help but feel used doing your dirty work." He looks at Three Bits. "What use do we need More heat on us at the moment?"

Hmerrin(HP:45/61 AC:24 T:14 FF:21 CMD:21)

Too much verbal wandering. Hmerrin can't take it.

Quick Plans to thwart Dark Schemes (DMs Cayzle & Damarr)
Wednesday August 23rd, 2017 10:27:07 PM

The sneaky halfling, named Bell, meets with suspicion and anger.

Toston queries Bell and finds out that she knows a bit about the Staffing merchant clan, and that they are allied with the Teeth.

She answers Dušan that she did not know that Sell-Sea Staffing is about to turn his coat.

As she tells what she knows, Toston gets a good feel for her trust-worthiness, and the fellow goes on to explain what Sell-Sea is planning, and about the magic whistle he is planning to blow at the next meeting of the Threats Working Group. [OOC: Toston, please accept a 500 xp RP award for choosing to trust Bell and for connecting the dots to tell her about Sell-Sea.]

Bell is startled to hear this, and genuinely surprised. But she sees the implication immediately. “This could put the kibosh on all the dealing with the Sahuagin!”

Wilford wants to know Bell’s intentions. She says that her House’s aim is to end the trade with the sea-folk. It is too disruptive, and what it the war spills over into Dirt City? What if both sides of that war find out that the Teeth have been supplying both of them?

Wilford also wants to know about the gems. Bell says that the Teeth have been getting them from the Sahuagin, who are collecting them from undersea volcanoes. The gems do not work underwater, so the sea-folk do not know they are being swindled by the Teeth.

Does the party have any gems? Bell and Three-Bits do not.

Hmerrin, sick of mincing words, asks who Bell thinks would be a receptive audience for the news of the Teethish double dealing. She thinks the Threats Committee is a great place to start.

Var cautions Hmerrin’s outburst, figuring there's a skirmish not too far off in the near future.

Still wary, Lornak wants to know how long Bell has been spying. She nods her head and gives an answer that makes sense. [OOC: since the beginning of this module, I think, but your DM admits not being sure of the truth. Whatever it is, she admits to it.]

“At this point,” the naturally secretive halfling continues, “Everyone's got at least one eye on you.” She gives a shrug, as if to say that's what happens, don’tcha know. “It’s no different, worse prolly, among the Houses, generally speaking. How close they’re watching you, and how long? That I can't say.”

Bell says she can maybe find a way to get a note to the Staffings, and even to Sell-Sea. “The Cloaks have ways,” she says.

[OOC: Have you told Bell and Three-Bits that the Teeth plan to assassinate Sell-Sea?]

Quick Plans to thwart Dark Schemes (DMs Cayzle & Damarr)
Thursday August 24th, 2017 9:47:00 PM

With her intentions revealed, the party starts bringing Bell into their plans.

Toston tells about the plot to kill Sell-Sea.

Lornak explains that the party was hoping to intercept a gems shipment. But you broke up a Mer-folk deal, and it is the Sahuagin, Bell reveals, that are sourcing and trading the gems. It is possible the Mer captured some gems in their war against the Sahuagin.

Wilford offers a choice: Sell-Sea or Threats Committee? But as Dušan begins to intuit, the most likely option is that it is an AND not an OR. That is, Bell clarifies, Sell-Sea will likely keep his head down until the next Threats Committee hearing, and show up there. On his way in, of course, is when he'll be at the greatest risk of attack.

Hmerrin really gets to the heart of it. He asks Bell if she can get them to Sea-Sell, so the heroes can protect him -- or, rather, kill or drive off the assassins.

Var agrees with the busting-heads portion of whatever plan is cooked up.

Bell does not want to over-promise. “I just heard about this Staffing merchant from you, so I need to do what I do best and gather information. Give me half a day to check out some ideas, and I can get back to you. Can you meet here tonite at dinnertime. First dinnertime, I mean.” (She is a halfling, after all).

“But understand me well,” Bell says, serious and intent. “We got off to the wrong start. Let’s agree not to keep secrets from each other. I promise to tell you all that I find out. We need to work as a team. Agreed?”

Lornak asks the gnome if he can come along with him to the WLA. He hopes that his concern for Ethani is not seeping through to the surface. Although, he admits to himself that the gnome knows him well enough by now to know his motivation. He keeps the conversation light.

Once at the WLA headquaters(assuming they allow him to enter) he asks about the mission that Ethani and Asteria are on. "I know the two of them are on an urgent errand for you." He says as he looks around. "It would have to be to just leave our needs behind them as they have. Is there any news that you can share with us?"

A Meeting and More (Guest DM Cayzle)
Friday August 25th, 2017 11:07:03 PM

Toston delivers Mesick’s share of the coin to him at ther WLA chapterhouse..

Lornak goes with Toston to the WLA. There, he learns more about the mission that Ethani accepted. After he hears about it, Lornak understands how it is vital, and that she would be the perfect person to do it. Maybe he feels proud of her for taking on such an important job.

Wilford goes to the Catacombs to shop.

Dušan, Hmerrin, and Var grab a rare chance to just relax for an afternoon.

When the time for First Dinner comes around, the party meets again with Bell.

“Huh,” she says. “This is some news indeed that you’ve given me. I’ve managed to confirm what you said, and that the Teeth are now looking for Sea-Sell’s head. They have a 5,000 gp bounty out for him.

“Not only that, but I know know where and when the nest Threats Working Group meeting will take place. And I’ve heard that the Teeth will have assassination teams at the site, which is astonishing considering the security that will be there. And my sources will be getting me a floorplan asap.”

[OOC: Maps and more info will arrive on Monday for your prep and planning pleasure ...]

Bell is clearly assuming that you will join her to ambush the ambushers. Is that really something you all are okay with?

Are we going to show up and potentially end up fighting a battle on two fronts? What is the makeup of the Committee house-wise? How many Teeth, Knives and Wolves sit on the board? I loathe walking into traps even if my new spell should make me better able to attack a group of assailants."

A Meeting and More (Guest DM Cayzle)
Monday August 28th, 2017 8:04:18 PM

Toston has some concerns about the security around the meeting. Bell laughs. “You are right to wonder about the danger at the meeting itself. And as to that, I have good news and bad news.”

“The good news is that the meeting is at the Prince’s Castle, and there is no way to either enter the castle or attend the meeting unless you are on the list. Each House gets a seat at the meeting, and each House can add people to the list, within reason. Sell-Sea has been to past meetings and is therefore already on the list.”

“Moreover, not only is he on the list, but security inside cannot be breached. The Prince holds that much power, even now. So have no fear about Sell-Sea’s safety once he enters the Castle.”

“No, the bad news is that the only approach to the Castle is through the Midnight Bazaar, and it is there that the assassin’s plan to attack -- as Staffing approaches the Castle.”

Dušan is clearly interested in getting answers.

Lornak, Hmerrin, and Var listen intently.

Aroundabouts time for First Dessert, a messenger brings Bell some papers. She opens them up and spreads the sketches on the table.

“We know the meeting is going to start at the third candlemark after the noon-bell rings. [OOC: A candle-mark is an hour.] We know that the meeting attendees wll not be allowed into the Castle more than 30 minutes early. We know that the assassins will be stationed in pairs at points in Bazaar. We suspect they will be using magic to pinpoint Sell-Sea as he approaches.”

“I have a source who is friendly with a wine merchant in the Bazaar. This report says that two shady types approached the merchant and offered to rent his entire booth and wares for a couple hours just before the meeting. They are paying more than the cost to replace the entire stall. So that means we know where one pair of assassins will be stationed, for sure.”

She points out the location of stall in the Midnight Bazaar, near the entrance to Grubbertown.

Wilford wonders if there will be time to visit the Catacombs. Considering the Threats Committee meeting is not until the day after tomorrow, there should be plenty of time for a trip to the magic shop.

Belle has informed us the merchant has been compensated already for more than the booth is worth already so if the booth just happened to burn down, the merchant will have been compensated and without a booth to hide in what will the assassins do? They'll be exposed so hopefully they'll be forced to flee. I'm not necessary advocating for arson, but I do have a spell which could theoretically set the place on fire now. You all talk about what is needed. Lornak summarizes the job. It seems straightforward enough.

Dušan suggests alerting the Knives. Wilford wants to warn the Castle Guard. Bell says, “Sure, that might help, but it might backfire if the so-called guards here are on the take. Your call.”

Toston suggests a fire distraction. Bell nods. “I have the info, but you have the experience for the action. I’ll follow your lead,” she says.

Hmerrin and Var ask about the number of assassins. Bell says she is sure there are at least 6, maybe more.

You continue to discuss options.

"How about Wil and Var near the known assassins, with Wil ready to light it up. Me and Dusan near the southern of these two bigger booths here in the middle. Toston and Lornak between the southern row of booths and the Castle, but closer to the western end."

"We all keep in eyesight of one another. Whoever sees Sell-Sea gives a wave and points him out, and we all converge. First ones there tell him what's going on, and then we escort the guy right into the castle."

An Ambush for the Ambushers (DMs Cayzle & Damarr)
Wednesday August 30th, 2017 11:48:20 PM

With a bit of jesting, you continue to question, plan, and come to agreement. Looking more closely at Bell’s map, you might recollect a few things about the Bazaar.

Knowledge Local DC 15: Highlight to display spoiler: {The second merchant from the right, along the top row in the main area, is particularly unscrupulous, and would eagerly loan his stall for even a modest amount (map update pending).}

Knowledge Local DC 20:Highlight to display spoiler: {The unscrupulous merchant would certainly pursue anyone were his property damaged, especially while in another’s hands.}

Knowledge Nobility DC 15 or Knowledge Local DC 25: Highlight to display spoiler: {The 3x3 block of booths in the middle of the 3 rows are all sponsored, in some manner, by the Prince and his constituency. None of them would harbor any suspicious activity in the marketplace (that didn’t come from ‘known’ sources)[map update also pending].}

Lornak approves of Toston’s booth fire, and warns caution - after ensuring Sea-Sell’s safety, he tells Bell, your main concern will be your own, not tangling with potentially dangerous House guards.

Wilford is fine playing the protection-gambit by ear.

Var notes the potential hazards of a flaming bazaar, and concerns of splitting up to guard all the avenues.

Hmerrin begins drawing a plan, positioning the group to cover the main area in front of the Castle. Planning to flag the man on-sight, the young soldier turns to Bell for a description of the whistleblower.

“Sell-Sea will certainly be in disguise, likely with a magical aspect.” Bell chimes in with a nod to Dušan. “He is a known bard, after all, a Half-Elf with hair so golden it’s almost green. I haven’t met him, myself, but my sixth sense says there’s something personal in his affinity for the Mer-folk.”

A reminder that Bell's informants reported some supposedly magical means of locating Sell-Sea to be employed by the assassins.

“I can get a message to some of Sell-Sea’s people for you, and we might find out the morning-of if he’ll meet for your protection into the Castle.” The halfling Cloak gives a shrug and a smile. “Otherwise, you’ll need some way to detect Staffing, or cover all your bases and plan a reaction to the assassins. Assuming they can find him.. It’s your show, really.”

Dušan like the distraction, but urges against splitting up.

Toston outlines his plan to set the booth ablaze, noting spell ranges for Hmerrin’s positioning.

Hmerrin and Dušan agree that the idea of renting a booth at the market.

Wilford volunteers to pose as a merchant and sell things!

Var will join him!

Toston offers some valuable intel.

Bell is of the opinion that the best thing would be to be in place well before the assassins arrive. She suggests setting up in the booth right now. “Why not go this evening? Set it all up and be ready to sell in the morning?”

Please go ahead and actually give actions, rather than just plans. Please detail what you expect to get done this evening, what you are looking for tomorrow, and how you are going to go about convincing anyone that you are humble tradesfolk!

Lornak is grateful that no one in the group jumps on the disguise idea. However, he believes he has a sufficient idea for his and the booths cover: A Scriptorium(and potential courier). He recalls many an hour of his youth working at taking diction and keeping records, hands sooty with the making of inks and dyes.

He takes the remainder of the day to head to the Catacombs and buys enough supplies to create Manuscript. He purchases velum, parchment if he can get it, Inkhons and pens.

For carbon ink; Charcoal and gum, motor and pestles.

For the more alchemicaly inclined of the group; metal-gall ink: iron gall, tannic acids and ferrous sulphate. Oak Apples and Gallnuts. He doesn't purchase anything as fancy as a torchere, but enough things to seem legitimate on a surface glance.

He finds twine for wrapping(and the equivalent of boxes for packing...?)

Once back at Marsh House, he spreads out his Scholars Outfit and fills its pockets with bolts declaring to the group that he's going to have to avoid any scuffles; "Looks like its going to be the range game for me this time guys." He says. "I'll keep my rapier and dagger(swordbreaker) on my person while I stand and interact with any potential customers, but I will stow my crossbow under the counter. Two of you can "work" making inks inside."

He takes the remainder of the evening to purge red-purple dyes out of his hair and gets it back to its natural stark white. In the morning he dons his garb(including scribe pouch), grabs his weapons(including a cure moderate wounds) and heads to the bazaar to set up shop.

Hmerrin looks downcast. "This is the same problem I had in the alley," he laments. "I'm a kid in platemail carrying a mess of large axes. I can't pretend I am anything but a guard. And Toston's shop doesn't rate a guard."

He looks at Bell. "You need to put me with one of those booths where a guard would be expected."

If she can't, the lad will have to pretend he owes Lornak a favor, and so is acting as guard for them.
Once in position, Hmerrin does guard stuff. Namely, give everyone in the area a good visual going over.

He figures the bard will be walking with a couple bodyguards anyway, and so keeps an eye out for small groups walking purposely toward the Castle.
He also keeps an eye on the known assassins. If they move, he moves.

The group coordinates with Bell and then splits up on their respective chores.

Wilford and Bell head off to rent the booth. It is as easy as you thought it would be. Business has not been good for Upton the Unscrupulous lately. He just cannot imagine why. Just remove 100 gp from your PC sheet and add a +2 circumstance bonus to any checks needed to act in character. Nice job with the set-up.]

Dušan does some reconnaissance. Sir, I need Perception, Know Local, and Gather Info (Diplomacy) checks from you. If you are trying to be covert at all, I also need Bluff, Disguise, and/or Stealth checks too. If you are using magic, tell me what magic spells or abilities you are using.

Toston ponders magical purchases to get the job done. [OOC: Please do let’s get any magical item purchasing done ASAP. Email me if the CC is not responsive in a timely fashion, please.]

Var keeps his own counsel.

Hmerrin worries about not being able to pose as anything but a guard.

You end up setting the booth in the late evening. Tomorrow you will have a full day of shoptending, and the day after tomorrow is the meeting of the Threats Working Group. This evening, right now, the market is quiet. Looks like you have a bladeseller on one side, and a food stand on the other. The bladeseller’s booth is sturdy and locked tight. There’s a dog in there too, who barks if you make too much noise.

Bell suggests that maybe Hmerrin could serve as a guard for the bladesmith next door. “Why not approach him in the morning?” she says to the well-armed warrior.

A dwarf and a human -- Knife guards, clearly -- stop by as you are setting up. Anyone who wants to be there can be helping Wilford. They check out your story, and Upton, the merchant you are renting from, vouches for you. The guards stand around for a bit. Do you want to say anything to them?

Hmerrin shows up bright and early the next day, and introduces himself to the bladeseller.
"Between caravans," he explains. "I was told maybe you could use someone big and not so bright to keep the quick hand types away. I qualify in spades." he adds with a deprecating grin.

The lad thinks he's doing well. He even catches on to the Knive's tip request.
And the bladeseller has some nice items.
And, really this whole bazaar thing has a lot of things going on. ooo, and smells! Someone is baking bread. Yayeet, that smells really...good.

Oh, and how are those assassins doing?

To Market To Market (Guest DM Cayzle)
Tuesday September 5th, 2017 12:01:20 AM

Late in the evening:

You all get to the booth late in the evening, after the market has shut for the night. The shady vendor from whom you are renting has already cleared out all his goods. As Lornak sets up the shop as a scriptorum, Wilford tells the shady vendor that he will care for his goods as if they were his own. The vendor looks around to see what Wilford is talking about, clearly confused. Then Wilford waits patiently, then assumes a kindly manner and begins selling. But nobody is there. The vendor looks around and then leaves as soon as he has his payment.

[OOC: Who is paying the vendor? How much? And have you marked it off your sheet?]

Wilford’s selling practice (if practice it was) does attract attention, and as noted in the prior DM post, two Knives, guards hired by the market to watch over the place at night, wander over.

Lornak plays it straight and stays in character flawlessly as a scribe starting a market booth.

But it is Var who smooths things over with a well-placed tip. And the going rate to say a “thank you” to the local Knives patrol is actually very reasonable, all things considered.

Var also uses his ability to speak with animals. He discovers nothing out of the ordinary. The dog next door wants to bark about intruders. The rats want to nibble on garbage. A cat is looking for a mate. Good idea, but this time, not very useful, I’m afraid.

The next day:

Tomorrow is the meeting of the Threats Committee. It is a normal day at the Midnight Bazaar, which despite its name, only meets during daylight hours.

Dušan spends some time looking around and gathering information. He discovers that the bladesmith has some magical weapons for sale, arrows, daggers, and a lingsword. Looks like +1 or +2 equivalents. One of the Prince’s booths is a magic item booth, selling potions and scrolls; there seems to be a mage actually crafting in the corner of the booth, and if Dušan has his spell right, there are a few other minor items for sale, stored in a small chest. Of course, he detects magic in general in the market, worn or carried by the shoppers and salesfolk, but those are hard to pinpoint without some major three-rounds of staring. I assume you will not be so rude here in the City Above?

Of course, the new scriptorum booth sure does glow with magic like the mother of all lantern archons.

Toston also scouts out the market, looking at the nearby stalls. Most are fragile things made of canvas and light poles. A few, like the Prince’s booths and the bladesmith next door, are made of solid plankwork. This market, right next door to the Prince’s castle, has a higher class of merchant and a better quality of goods. Shoppers here are either heavily armed or escorted by bodyguards.

Hmerrin shows up at the weapon shop next to Lornak’s new scriptorum, and puts on a bit of a goofus act as he asks for a job. The bladeseller casts an appraising look over his gear. Several masterwork weapons. Masterwork plate mail. He especially looks right at that WLA badge, worn openly. The bladeseller ponders for a moment, then, with his voice down, says, “Sure, you can ‘work’ for me. I’ll pay you a silver a day, and you can honestly say you work here. Honesty, that’s important to you guys, right? My name’s Gareth, like the hero of old. I don’t want to know your name, or your business. But I want you to swear on that badge you got there that you’ll keep me out of your drama, and you’ll pay me back double for any harm or damage you or your drama do to me and my business.” He sticks out his hand if Hmerrim agrees.

There’s no sight of assassins, but you would not really expect any. The meeting is not until tomorrow.

A Map Of The Midnight Bazaar and the Prince’s Castle. Super sorry the better map is not done yet. Tomorrow for sure.

To Market To Market (Guest DM Cayzle)

Wilford spends the day at the booth and does a fine job of selling. He also walks the bazaar to gather some information. He learns that word on the street is that Sell-Sea Staffing has gone missing, on the lam. Some say he absconded with cash that found its way into his purse somehow. Others say the Teeth did him in for a trade that went belly up. He hears that Sell-Sea is hiding in the sewers where it is safe. Willford hears that maybe he was seen in the Halfling Quarter.

Var spends the day studying the market and getting a feel for it. For the rest of today and tomorrow, please accept a +2 circumstance bonus on all perception checks made hereabouts.

Dušan ponders the obvious sources of bright magic in Lornak’s scriptorum booth. [OOC: Hint -- check out your character sheets, LOL!]

He also thinks about how to mask those bright auras. If you make a Know Arcana check vs DC10, Please Highlight to display spoiler: {You know there is magic to mast magic auras. }

Hmerrin spends the day on guard duty, keeping alert to threats both here and relatively close by. Today is a normal day at the market. The odd cutpurse, a duel, nothing out of the ordinary. The Knives keep it all under control, per usual.

Toston and Lornak busy themselves around the booth. [OOC: Sorry, first day of school tomorrow and I have to get to bed. No more time to delay for late posters.]

The day passes without incident. Any final deeds or preparation before the next day dawns?

To Market To Market (DMs Damarr and Cayzle)
Thursday September 7th, 2017 6:01:27 AM

The day before the Threats Committee meeting, Toston watches the guard “patrols,” which are more meanderings, as you notice that the guards, Knives and Prince’s men all, tend to stick near their favorite market stall or (probably unauthorized) seat. Every twenty minutes or so a guard-pair will walk a short ways down one alley of the bazaar, before heading back to their spot. They tend to favor the sweets shops, and don’t seem too worried about what’s going on unless there’s something in it for them. When there’s a duel or a fistfight, they wander over pretty promptly, but mostly to make sure that the fight does not erupt into a riot. They tend not to actually step into “disagreements.”

The new day, the day of the meeting, rolls out much like the one before it, and the Midnight Bazaar is a busy affair. The shopkeepers and patrons are no more auspicious today than yesterday. You notice, as you open your booth in the morning, that the wine seller's stall is being manned by two different fellows. They definitely look the part, much like yourselves, selling wines of their own (cheaper) variety.

Lornak gets more into his own role behind the counter, calling out your ostensible services like the best of the barkers.

Wilford wonders if you should go out and look for Sell-Sea, after the rumors of his whereabouts, but Hmerrin shrugs, since today’s the day anyway, when Sell-Sea is going to tell the Threats Committee about House Teeth’s double-dealing (or be assassinated in the attempt!?)

Dušan casts Misdirection on your booth, making it appear as another nearby shop to divination & detection spells, and hopefully hiding the heroes’ magic-heavy aura.

A few people stop to watch, bobbing & nodding in excitement as you weave the spell, before leaving in disappointment at the seemingly anticlimactic “lack” of effect.

Var stays in the booth, keeping a low profile.

For all: Perception DC 15: Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice a man and a woman, walking together around the bazaar. They’ve passed you a few times, going one way or the other. They must've seen the whole thing at least twice.} Var, do not forget your circumstance bonus.

IF you make that roll, or if someone who does reveals that to you, then please make an Intelligence (memory) DC 8 check: Highlight to display spoiler: {The man and woman shoppers were among the onlookers for Dušan’s Misdirection spell. They've apparently avoided your immediate area since.} Note: This Intelligence check is an ability score check, not a skill check, so you would roll simple d20 + Int modifier.

Sense Motive DC 16: Highlight to display spoiler: {The pair aren’t really shopping, they just look like it.}

Sense Motive DC 18: Highlight to display spoiler: {In fact, they seem more interested in all the other shoppers walking around.}

The earliest anyone can enter the Prince’s Castle for the Threats Committee meeting is 30 minutes before it starts, and they close the doors when the meeting starts. That leaves a narrow window where Sell-Sea can enter the Castle (and be safe from would-be-assassins).

That window is fast approaching.

Sense Motive DC 14: Highlight to display spoiler: {The wine selling assassins seem to be getting just a bit fidgety.}

The two ‘shoppers’ are no longer in the line of sight of your scrivener’s booth.

Please be set with all your spell prepped, gear equipped, and so on. This is the time to prepare in whatever way you seek to do so. Do you watch the two wine-selling assassins and wait? Seek out Sell-Sea in the bazaar? You have many options. What about the plans you made?

Lornak continues being the front man for the booth. It takes most of his attention to do so. As he continues meeting and greeting he notices a couple making their way through the bazaar. He does his level best to figure out what they are about but is too distracted by having to keep up his facade. "I will have to leave that to the others" He thinks to himself. "If it is even a concern."

Dušan is at AQ23, alert and on guard.

Var has not given map coordinates, so the DM places him at the booth. Which, being made of canvas and thin poles, could not support his weight.

Toston, scroll in hand, is only 10 ft from the wine booth and the assassins therein.

HERO ACTIONS

[OOC: We are definitely in combat rounds, friends!]

Lornak moves to AH22 and grabs his crossbow.

Hmerrin, moves to AE29 and looks at the assassins. If you make a Perception check vs DC15, then Highlight to display spoiler: {They are doing something.}
Note that they are about 130 ft away, and perception imposes a -1 per 10 ft distance. Hmerrin, if you make a Perception check vs DC28, then Highlight to display spoiler: {They are drawing weapons.}
He definitely sees Toston disappear and then a great gout of fire, however!

Toston does not scatter when the horse appears, like most of the bystanders. He reads his scroll, disappears, takes a step forward, and blasts the booth with fire.

Wilford sends the pony toward the now-flaming booth! It has move 40 and travels 80 feet closer to the fire.

[NOTE: I see that it is a medium pony, not a large horse, actually!]

Wilford himself stays hidden (Stealth check?)

Dušan cleverly makes like a local and ducks under cover. He casts a spell -- which in all the turmoil, MAY go unnoticed. (Stealth check?).

Var bides his time.

=====

ENEMY ACTIONS

The Wineseller Assassins, a human man and woman, see Toston read his scroll and disappear. They are not surprised. With evasion and save checks of +9, you would expect the assassins to dodge easily for no damage. However, with saving throws of natural 1 and natural 2, both fail!

The female assassin calls to her friend, “Invisible wizard! Run!” They abandon the booth and split up, running so that both cannot get caught in a fireball.

The other two assassins of whom you are aware remain under cover, or so they think, pretending to be passers-by, fearful and cowering.

Taking a five foot step out from between the carts, Var fires off two shots in quick secession at the nearer of the two assassins (AS14) (Attack: Natural 1 for a 13; and 10)

Var begins a string of curses that starts in common and ends in Orcish.

Stealth is not the first thought on Dušan's mind in most situations, but he feels like the a master itself is speaking to him. When the powers call, Dušan has found it is wise to listen and tries to be subtle in spell casting (stealth d20+6 = 22). Still in position of an incredibly strong Ley Line, he then sends his spectral hand over to Lornak and casts Cat's Grace on his friend. HERO ACTIONS

With a shout to his ‘ghostly’ friend, Wilford directs the summoned horse to attack the nearest assassin. The pony misses with two hooves, after its 5ft step to AT15. Wil himself casts another summons. With the shout and the casting, the madman then also tries to be stealthy!

Lornak calls a warning to his companions and reloads his crossbow, sending another bolt at the casually-dressed assassin. The return volley whizzes just as closely by, barely missing the mark.

Hmerrin hopes the assassins don’t connect him with the other heroes as he continues his hustle to AP39, bringing the wine-selling assassins, and Toston, near charging range.

Being invisible and thus immune to AoOs, Toston turns and charges to BD43, connecting with the female assassin. Her fortitude save (at +4) fails and she is stunned -- and takes 3 damage!

Dušan casts Cat’s Grace on Lornak from afar.

Var shoots twice and gets a bullseye vs the female assassin near him. She takes 21 damage!

=====

ENEMY ACTIONS

The male Wineseller Assassin cocks his head. Charging and attacking, Toston may be invisible, but he is definietly audible. The assassin uses perception to pinpoint his location by sound. The DC to hear battle is -10; the DC to pinpoint is 20 higher, with a -1 per ten feet intervening. The assassin rolls a check of 27 and has a really good idea of where he is. He draws a bolt, dips it in poison, slaps it into his crossbow, and shoots at Toston. His miss chance is 50%, and he rolls a 42 so his bolt goes wide!

The female Winseller Assassin is stunned.

Both Bystander Assassins in the north again take out bolts, dip them in a vial at their belts, and load and shoot them quickly at Lornak and Var, both of whom are AC18. Lornak is missed again and Var is hit again! Var takes 8 damage and must make another DC13 Fort save or fall unconscious.

(Move Action AM16[partial cover?]) Once his back is against the stall loads another bolt into his crossbow. (Move Action)
