Where there's smoke, there's fire.

DM Ken: 1st Floor Map
Saturday August 19th, 2017 4:53:25 AM

Pressi convinces Murphy that a good nights rest is a better order than a chase around town, especially since they finally seem to have a decent base of operations from which to strike out in the morning.

Kezzem is unusually quiet (waited as long as possible for his post) and Lance looks for some trees from which to post a watch, but finds nothing. Perhaps Garron doesn't want his carrier chickens roosting in a tree? Bliss naps outside, hidden in plain sight, snoozing gently through the witching hours.

Pressi and Sky take the official watch, though though they get a little help from Mookie, who is watching from outside.

...................................................

Though Garron told the Sword he should be about an hour in his scrying and preparations, it is much sooner than that before a situation arises. Sitting at the table, less than 30 minutes into their watch, both Sky and Pressi soon notice a thick grey fog seemingly falling from the ceiling above into the rooms below. In a matter of seconds, the smokey gray clouds spread through a number of rooms, settling heavily throughout the bottom floor of the manor.

Using their noses, it's fairly obvious that this effect is fog, not smoke, as it doesn't burn the lungs and there's no heat in it's base.

Sky and Pressi Only.

Knowledge Arcana - DC 24: Identify a spell effect in place. Highlight to display spoiler: {Solid Fog}

Perception: DC 18 - Highlight to display spoiler: {There are two very loud *THUMPS* that comes from outside, as if something heavy has been thrown onto the ground from above.}

Sky and Pressi Only.

Highlight to display spoiler: {Should you try to move through the fog, you find it is so dense that it physically resists your movement. You cannot 5 foot step through this fog, you move at half speed, and you imagine that fighting inside of it will be difficult.}

Mookie Only: Highlight to display spoiler: { Mookie sees two large humanoid creatures emerge from Garrons balcony. The lumber over the railings and drop to the ground below outside, then turn to start making their way towards the house. One appears to be heading towards Kezzems window. The other, towards Lances.}

All sleeping characters: DC 28 - Highlight to display spoiler: {There are two very loud *THUMPS* that comes from outside, as if something heavy has been thrown onto the ground from above.}

DM Ken: A sleeping character adds +10 to the DC of perception rolls. A closed door and a wall add + 5 each. So those sleeping inside need either a DC 20 perception check to hear any shouts of alarm from Pressi or Sky, (if they choose to make them) or to be physically shaken awake.

Bliss needs a DC 35 perception check to wake up to a shout of alarm from inside, a DC 10 to hear Mookie shouting at him, or to be physically awakened. Mookie is not sleeping, and would need a DC 15 perception check to hear a shout of alarm from inside.

If Mookie gives a shout of alarm, those inside would need a DC 35 perception check to hear him.

I have linked the map to the 1st floor in my posting title. I have also given you all little name tags that you can scoot around the map to show your movement. Honor system on moving the right distance or triggering AoO's. If you have a character portrait you would like me to use, send it to me or show it to me and I will replace your name with that icon instead and make a key to the side of the map.

DM Note: It has NOT been a full nights rest, and spells have not refreshed, nor has natural healing recovered any hit points.

Bliss (AC20, HP81of81) (Cayzle)  d20+28=43 ; d20+14=27 ;
Saturday August 19th, 2017 9:08:24 AM

If Mookie shouts now, he gives away Bliss's position. Instead, he reaches down and pecks gently at his master, whispering, "Kid! Kid! Wake up! Look!" That's a standard action to Aid Another to wake an ally.

Bliss opens his eyes, looking around. He sees what he figures are enemies. He loads his bah and stays hidden. Stealth check 43 and Bliss remains prone.

Mookie flies (Fly check 27 if needed) 15 feet above the head of the nearest foe (25 ft altitude total) -- or as close to it as his move of 40 will allow (he starts from 5 ft up on the fence). Kindly DM, please move Mookie at your convenience.

While flying toward or hovering above the foe at the end of his move, Mookie THEN shouts at the top of his lungs -- Highlight if you make the right Perception DC ... 35 I think or maybe 34 if Mookie is 10 ft closer? ... Please Highlight to display spoiler: {FEAR! FIRE! FOES! TWO BIG JERKS! HEY GIANT! YES YOU! MORE LIKE A GIANT PILE OF MUD! HERE, LET ME POOP ON YOU! LOOK UP AND SAY AAAAAAHHH!}

When he hears what Mookie is saying, Bliss smiles his first real smile since Alleah and Shel left and everything went to crap.

Sky moves to Murphy, shaking him awake.

OOC: Sorry, could have swore I posted something after the previous DM post. Kezzem was going to press Garon some more on Uthvas, suggesting maybe he knew him by another name and describe him physically. If that didn't work, he was going to ask if any of Garon's known enemies, dead or alive, might have traveled in similar circles.

Kezzem mutters to himself in his sleep and drool a little bit.

OOC: Perception: 6. Nope! Kezzem can't even spot his dreams with that check.

Pressi frowned at the sounds outside and the creeping whatever. "Responsible or not, I think I ought to pay our host a visit, as soon as you wake up our friends...."

She watched Sky move in slow motion and listened for sounds of motion that never came.

"Ok, that's how we are going to play it. So the dining room, you'd say that's 10 feet from everyone, right?"

Move action: take out thunder stone.

Standard action: throw it down the hallway. Sleep through that.

ooc: If Lance cannot find a tree, he would have remained outside on watch. Also, he would have arranged with other party members to keep someone awake on watch. :)

If I was awake and on watch...

Lance tucks and rolls behind the bell. He sits down in the grass and keeps his back against the foundation of the bell as he casts a spell.

ooc: Move action to take cover behind bell. Cast elemental body I (air).

If I was asleep...

Lance opens his eyes with a start at the sound of the exploding thunderstone. He sits up and crouches in the grass to take a look around.

DM Ken Lance was asleep, and Pressi/Sky were on watch. If he wants to be outside with Bliss, that is fine. The thunderstone is not an automatic awakening. Using perception rules, "the sound of battle" reduces a perception DC by 10. We will equate a T-stone with the sound of battle.

DM Ken, Bonus Post

Anyone rolling to wake up after Pressi throws her stone, you may subract 10 from the DC. I know this will be incovenient for say, Murphy, who only missed the check by 1, but as your DM it is FAR simpler for me to use post order as a pseudo initiative order as opposed to trying to weave a complex web of "I would have done this before/after Mr. Tomato jumped in the middle of my bacon and/or lettuce."

On the brightside, Murphy will get to subract the 10 from the DC on his next action.

Also, as there are no rules about it in Pathfinder, your DM is fine with you taking a move/standard/swift as normal on a turn when you wake up. We are playing heroes afterall, waking up to danger is something they are probably good at.

Also, Remember that inside the fog you cannot see, and movement is halved.

Pressi makes a perception check upon the stairs in an attempt to determine 1) if she hears anything from Garon, such as if he's talking or screaming, and 2) if she sees any traps or spells on the stairs.

Player Actions.
-----------------------

Bliss wakes up and loads his bow, thanks to Mookie. Mookie uses a standard action to wake Bliss, and a move action to fly around and warn others!.[/b]

Lance stays asleep outside, despite the thunderstone and the warnings of Mookie.

Murphy wakes to the sound of Pressi's thunderstone.

Kezzem stays asleep.

Sky moves down the hallway, as far as he can, considering the effects of the fog.

Pressi tosses a thunderstone into the dining room. It's loud bang reduces the perception DC for sleeping players by 10!
For those awake and can hear, the dogs outside are barking furiously, obviously unsettled by the thumps from outside the manor.

------------
Battle Recap

Outside, Bliss is wakened by Mookie with a gentle peck. Lance slumbers through the commotion. The thumps from outside trek closer to the house, followed by the sound of shattering glass. Mookie screams warnings overhead, before his tiny voice is drowned out by Pressi's thunderstone. Sky quickly and bravely charges into the mist to rouse Murphy, surely the druid knows what to do! Pressi decides once everyone is awake, she's paying their host a visit.

-------------------
Enemy Actions

???: Mookie watches the first creature shatter a window, and then squeeze through it.

???: Smashes through Kezzems window, and pummels the sleeping Paladin!

Attack 1: Smash Window.
Attack 2: Hit AC 19 for 12 damage. Kezzem is flat flooted and helpess, but this creature isn't smart enough to perform a coup de grace. Kezzem wakes up after taking the damage.

IF, Kezzem sleeps in his armor, he is fatigued without the endurance feat. IF Kezzem does not, remember that he does not have his armor bonus to AC this battle.

-------------------------------

From above, a scream is heard, and Pressi quickly becomes aware of a fire spreading in a perfect line down through Garrons stairs! The fire sprung up instantaneously along all points, so she's fairly sure there's magic involved from someone.

Awakened by the Bang! of the thunderstone in the hallway [not deafened, rolled fort save of 21 vs dc 15, added +5 because of closed door - and may be farther away than 10', anyhow, and did not need +5], Murphy rouses, notes the fog, and summons a small air elemental. When it arrives, he opens the door, and commands in Auran, "Puhalla sumua talossa - ole tuulinen myrsky." [Blow through the fog in the house. Be a whirlwind.]

Once the air elemental hears the command, it transforms into a whirlwind, and moves with perfect flying at a speed of 100, passing through as much of the fog as it can reach. Anyone in the way - watch out! The elemental only goes through doors if they are open. The movement starts at the beginning of the next round.

If the door is closed, he opens it to allow the elemental to move through the fog outside the room. He looks about and listens, and clearly detects sounds of conflict, as well as a whiff of distant smoke.

Bliss takes a shot at the enemy attacking Kezzem. He hits it with his arrow but notices it does the damage seems to be at least partially ignored.

Lance wakes up with Mookie's help, and quickly gets himself into position.

Murphy wakes to the sound of Pressi's thunderstone. He starts summoning an air elemental to do his bidding.

Kezzem wakes, unarmored, and gets some distance from his window.

Sky moves down the hallway, as far as he can, considering the effects of the fog. He breaks through on the other side, and can hear Kezzem singing about an attacker! He sees nothing outside of the window.

Pressi darts outside and sees Mookie, but no enemies. As she moves through the wall of fire, she takes 8 damage as she moves within 10 feet of the flames, and then 15 damage for moving through it. Once on the other side, she notices the heat does not seem to be projecting towards her anymore.

She figures with a DC 15 climb check as part of her move action, she can perch herself precariously on the window ledge just above her on the second floor. If she can hit the window hard enough it should shatter easily and she can sneak in on her next turn. (Window: Hardness 2, 2 hit points)

Player Actions.
-----------------------

Bliss unleashes Silvie upon the battlefield, and after a spell from Bliss, both Mookie and Silvie head towards the balcony. As they pass over the balcony space, a trap spell activates with a bright light, and Mookie is targeted by thunderous barrage of magic missiles.

Mookie takes 51 damage from the magic missile trap, and falls in a smoking steak to the ground. Silvie, it's owner killed, deactivates and falls near Mookies body.

Bliss also alerts Pressi to his presence, as best he can. If Pressi wants to spot Bliss, she must beat his stealth check, but gains a +10 bonus on the attempt.

DM Ken: Bliss is either stealthed, or he isn't. In the future, if you whisper loud enough for a party member to hear you, there is a chance a foe will hear you as well.

Lance casts fly and heads straight up, and his kindly DM makes his fly check for him. Flying straight up is half movement, and requires a fly check of DC 20. Lance passes with a 26, using his skill mod of 15.

Murphy makes his DM do a lot of reading.

(Okay, an air elementals vortex doesn't list it's pull speeds, at all. A small one says it can suck up tiny creatures. Solid Fog requires 31 mph to disperse. The air elemental also isn't immune to the effects of solid fog.

Long story short: DM ruling is that as a move action, the small elemental can remove the solid fog from all squares touching it. Thus, it could move a regular move, at half speed in the solid fog, then spend another move action to remove the fog from it's square, and all adjacent and connected squares that are not impeded by walls/doors.)

Murphy's air elemental removes the fog from his room, and Murphy begins summoning an earth elemental. As the air elemental has used both actions, it cannot ready an action, but of course is allowed attacks of opportunity as usual.

Kezzem swings back at the Golem, affording it the same partial cover he benefited from. Only one dagger cuts the creature, and the Golem seems to take no damage.

Sky jumps through the window with little difficulty. He is nearly face to face with the creature attacking Kezzem through the window!

Pressi drinks a potion and considers stalking after the other Golem. The broken window outside of the empty room tells her it has probably climbed back inside. No one has eyes on it, because they cannot pierce the solid fog with their vision. All she knows is it is somewhere in the house, and it's footfalls hint it is moving towards Murphy's room.

DM Ken: When the party does not have visibility to an enemy, I typically track it's movements myself by making it invisible and un-manipulable( is that a word?) on the map.

-------------------
Enemy Actions

Flesh Golem(blue dot): Clubs at Kezzem again with his large fists. Because of it's angle through the window sill, Kezzem still benefits from partial cover, raising his AC to 21. One of the large fists connects, the other does not. One fist hits AC 33 for 10 damage on a natural 20, but does not confirm.

Kezzem takes 10 damage from the slam attack.

Murphy listens quietly for signs of the enemy, and a sudden and violent crash against his door confirms his suspicion. The door has hardness 5 and 10 hitpoints. It takes 12 damage from the attack, and has 3 hp remaining. Another blow will surely tear it down.

-------------------------------

Murphy: You remember the hallways were only 5ft wide. A summoned large earth elemental will either take up all of the space in your room, forcing you or it to have to squeeze, or have to squeeze iself to leave the room. Unless of course, it is summoned outside. You surmise that the Golem is probably cramped as well.

Alas, Bliss was clever to cast the See Invisibility spell, but he cast it on Mookie, not on himself, so he cannot make use of it.

Mookie is at -11. 20% stabilization roll is not enough, so he is at -12 at the end of the round.

Bliss casts Beast Shape I and assumes the form of an eagle. Ley Check 49.

BTW, he should have made a ley check last round for the See Invis. 69 is A-OK there too retroactively.

In eagle shape, he flies up next to Mookie and lands.

Can he use stealth and HIPS after casting earlier in the round? If so, his stealth is 45. If not, then he is not stealthed.

Pressi takes a five foot step to where the... flesh golem, right... to where the creature disappeared but she can't see a thing. Somehow, she knew a couple of things.

First, she suspected they would have to abandon the house. In which case their best bet might be to trap the flesh golem in this place rather than defeat it.

Second, flesh golems have a major weakness. They are really stupid.

And third, she reflected as she dug her way through her bag of holding, everything is a weapon....

--------------

A while back, an argument sprung between the PCs and the salespeople of the catacombs. "It doesn't matter how much it costs to make," the latter said. "It is worthless. It is useless, and therefore we will not buy. Who will ever find such a thing."

So Pressi struck a deal with the powers that be. She agreed to keep it, to cart it in her bag of holding. To note it's value as zero and thus not count against her WBL. A mistake, for someday she might indeed find a use....

This all happened. Look it up.

Through the open window soared a figure. Brown and shopworn, the giant teddy bear landed into the room within the fog. "I love you," it began to speak in the giant tongue for all to hear. "I love you. I love you. I..."

In terran, Murphy tells the earth elemental, 'Kæmp den store væsen, da den styrter ned ad døren,' which translates as: 'Fight the big creature as it crashes down the door, and get it out of here.'

In Auran, the druid tells the air elemental, 'Voit hyökätä ison olennon kasvoihin, kun se kaatuu oven läpi, sitten tyhjennä sumu vasemmalle käytävällä ja missä tahansa sen jälkeen kun löydät sen.' which translates as: 'Attack the big creature in the face as it crashes down the door, then clear the fog down the left corridor and wherever you find it after that.'

Realizing whatever large critter which is opening the door in its own unique way will preclude him from easily leaving the room, and as he earlier smelled a few wisps of smoke, Murphy puts his shoulder to it, and leaps through the window to the ground below, hustling (if able) to the right (on the map) just outside, and looks in through the window. Can he discern the flames at the bottom of the stairway across the room? [Let me know of hp damage, if any, from broken glass.]

Am using the already rolled attack by air elemental - hit AC21 for 3 hp damage - as its AoO.

For the earth elemental, AoO hits AC15 (no damage, a miss), two slams hit AC 27 for 16 hp and AC 32 for 13 hp (readied action).

The d20+8 I realized was not possible even to consider, so please ignore.
Total damage to flesh golem: 32 hp

Bliss takes the form of an eagle, thanks to Beast Shape 1. He lands next to Mookie, and as stealth is used as part of movement, and hide in plain sight says he can hide while observed, he has no problems stealthing in birdie form.

Kezzem withdraws from the combat. (His DM interprets the statement as best as he can, and places Kezzems marker in the closest space possible outside of the Golems attack range, which is in the hallway.

Pressi lobs an old, talking teddy bear into the room. Golems are dumb, she figures, and everything is a weapon.

Lance very specifically casts Black Tentacles next to the golem he can see. Black tentacles erupt from the ground! The spell has a 20ft radius spread, and from it's targeted point, cannot avoid Sky, Bliss, or Kezzem.

Golem: Grappled. 10 damage, 5 after DR.
Carrier Chicken: Grappled. Staggered. 5 damage.
Carrier chicken: Grappled. Unconscious. 8 damage.
Carrier chicken: Grappled. Unconscious. 9 damage.
Sky: Grappled. 6 damage.
Kezzem: In the area, but not grappled.
Bliss: Grappled. 7 damage.

Murphy gives orders to his elemental minions, then crashes through the window. He is wearing armor, so no damage is taken. Going through the window is a move action, so Murphy takes another 20 feet to the right.

Sky wants to cast entangle, but is caught up by Lance's Black Tentacles spell. His DM rolls a concentration check, and the result is 27. To cast a spell while grappled, the DC is 10 + 14 (Lance's Black Tentacles CMB) + 1 (The level of the spell being cast).

Sky succeeds on the entagle! The Golem fails its reflex save. Sky is still entangled by the black tentacles spell, and takes 6 damage. (Tenctacles CM check was 34)

-------------------
Enemy Actions

Flesh Golem(blue dot): is both grappled and entangled. First, it tries to break free of the grapple with the tentacles. It rolls a maneuver check of 28, which beats the tentacles CMD of 24. (Lances CMB for the spell +10).

Then it makes a strength check to break free of the entangle spell, (a free action), and rolls an 18 against DC 14 (the DC of the spell) and passes.

Being that it's a Golem, and it isn't very smart, it simply starts bashing Kezzem, who is grappled and within reach.

Sky, being grappled, has his dex reduced by 4 and his AC reduced by 2. (From the dex loss.) The Golem hits him hard anyways, and Sky gets the feeling he would have felt these grappled or not. The mighty fists club against him, hitting AC 26 for 13 damage, and hitting AC 33 (crit confirmed vs AC 28) for 22 damage. Sky takes 33 damage total.

Since the Golem has remained in the area of the Black Tentacles AND the Entangle, he must make another reflex save next turn and can be attacked by the tentacles again, next turn.

Flesh Golem:(Red dot) smashes through the door, and is attacked by a pair of elementals. It takes 19 damage, after accounting for damage resistance. It's second attack targets the largest threat, the earth elemental, but fails harmlessly smashes its fist against hardened rocks.

Pressi is disappointed that the monster doesn't seem to take the bait. She's also disappointed at how non-ornery the carrier chickens turned out to be.

She's particularly disappointed that Lance managed to grapple half the team, and that Murphy remains out of sight.

Mostly, though, she feels disappointed yet again that she can't seem to find a way to contribute to this fight. And now she is faced with a quandary of bad choices and a lack of any particular skills.

-------------

They had found her right before the fire. Tapped into her dreams, forced her into a vision. The mediums were the shadowy forces of various immortal powers - the Crones of the South, maybe - that could bring her to the most evil people she had ever met, her family.

The meeting in dreams had been strained. Her family, a powerful clan in Dirt City, spoke of forces on the move, from the rise of the keys to the changes to witches through the world. They mocked her for once again rejecting magic, once again trying to remain lawful. Of pretending she was anything other than how she was raised.

She had not told anyone when she struggled to awake. She vaguely recalled trying to make a joke.

------------

It looked like the only one she could reach to try freeing was Bliss - and someone had to check on Garron, so the golems would have to wait (assuming she could ever get to either of them).

One second, though... A single shuriken thrown up in the air towards the balcony into the window (attack roll 29, damage 4) as she patiently waited to make sure her path wouldn't trigger another trap.

When it didn't, she began to climb her way up (climb roll 23, beats DC15), all the while keeping an eye out for traps, tentacles, and foes (Perception 20 + 2 for traps, darkvision).

Bliss tries to wriggle free with no luck, but is later freed when Lance dispels the Black Tentacles.

Murphy can see the stairs burning through the window, and starts to summon one water elemental. His other elementals continue the fight vs the flesh golem. His Earth elemental lands a solid blow, and his air elemental is supposed to go clear out more fog.

A creature cannot move through a square occupied by an enemy without a acrobatics check equal to the enemies CMD + 5. The air elemental needs a natural 20 to succeed, and rolls a 15. It takes an attack of opportunity, but can try again next round. The Flesh Golem rolls a natural 1, and misses.

Pressi tosses a shuriken through a window, which breaks. The shutter behind it is still closed. No more explosions occur. She easily jumps up and makes the ledge. Next turn, as a move action, she can effortlessly pull herself up onto the balcony.

2nd Floor

Lance dispels his tentacles, but alas, it is probably too late for poor Carrier Chicken 4, who is bleeding to death on the ground. He offers his pals a ride, if wanted.

Lance is not wearing a saddle, so any creature he carries will have the grappled condition, or alternatively, if they try to ride his back, they must use a move action to mount him, or make the fast mount Ride check, which is a DC 20, before penalties. From there on, they must use the ride skill, with a -10 penalty, to maintain their mounted status. (The penalty is because he is ill suited to being a mount and is not saddled. He must also be sure to check weight and encumbrance.)

Lance -is- propositioned by Sky, but Lance tells him to get away from that big mean Golem, first things first.

Sky wants a ride! He doesn't move, or make any other actions. His generous DM is going to have him 5 ft step away from the golem, and take the full defensive action.

The Golem still standing in his entangle spell must make another reflex save, and fails it.

Kezzem resheathes his daggers, rather than just dropping them. He pulls his adamantine sword and takes a 5ft step towards the Golem in the hallway. Because it is just a 5ft step, he does not provoke an attack of opportunity.

Sheathing a weapon DOES provoke attacks of opportunity, the Murphy's golem already provoked such an attack, and the Flesh Golem does not have combat reflexes, so it cannot make a second attack of opportunity towards Kezzem.

-------------------
Enemy Actions

Flesh Golem(blue dot): is entangled. It makes a strength check to break free of the entangle spell, (a free action), and rolls an 11 against DC 14 (the DC of the spell), which fails. It can only move half speed, and suffers -4 dex and -2 to it's attack rolls. It attacks Sky, who is nearbye.

It hits AC 27 with one attack, which beats Sky's boosted defense of 26. Sky takes 9 damage.

Flesh Golem:(Red dot): The Golem turns towards Kezzem, focusing on him instead of the elemental. Since they aren't intelligent on their own, it stands to reason it might be following it's most recently issued orders.

The Flesh Golem hits AC 31, which is a critical hit, and confirms against AC 20, which is higher than Kezzems 19. It's second attack hits AC 22. The penalty for squeezing has been taken into account. Kezzem takes 30 total damage.

Bliss seemed to be okay - more so than Kezzem or Sky - but the only way out of this seemed to be to stop Garron, and whatever was controlling those things.

With a flick of her wrist (quickdraw - swift action), she slid out a needle that she had been saving: an injector of invisibility. Just in case something stood above her.

Bliss is free of the tentacles, and now he realizes the truth: Mookie, his longtime pal and protector, is dead.

A fierce, focused fury grows in the tiny eagle-shaped hero.

First, another save. Bliss uses a preemptive hero point to gain a +8 on the save. At total +16, he rolls a 29.

Bliss uses a swift action to activate his Arcane Strike feat.

Using this focused fury that he feels, Bliss charges the blue-dot monster from above. That's a +3 to hit; +2 charging, and +1 for being higher. He hides in plain sight as he dives, if possible -- his goal is to gain a +2 to hit bonus for attacking unseen, and to deprive the monster of its dex bonus to AC -- his goal is also to avoid provoking an AoO as he flies at it unseen from above. Of course, as soon as he attacks, Bliss cannot thereafter use stealth.

Rolls:
Stealth to avoid being seen on the approach: 41.

AC vs AoO with mobility if seen and attacked: 26.

Roll to hit (arcane strike beak) at +5, +11 total ... hits AC27 for 5 damage.

Murphy steps to the window and shatters the glass with the pommel of the cold iron dagger he keeps up his sleeve. He speaks to the small water elemental, which looks like a cresting wave, across the intervening space. "Slokk brannen, gå opp trappen," he tells the summoned creature. ['Quench the fire, go up the stairs.']

Murphy climbs up the wall and through the window [climb 24].

The water elemental, finding magical fire, attempts to dispel the wall of fire, but fails this round [DC 9 - certainly not enough]. If it were non-magical, the creature might quench it with ease, but this is a much greater challenge.

The earth elemental strikes well once for 18 hp damage (before DR) against the flesh golem which fights Kezzem.

Another creature might be caught in the whirlwind if it touches or enters the whirlwind, or if the whirlwind moves into or through a creature's space. A creature in whirlwind form cannot make its normal attacks and does not threaten the area around it." So, I think the whole hallway is clear of fog. Let me know if I am mistaken! Also - there seems little danger that the flesh golem will be caught up in the whirlwind as it speeds past.

Bliss is free of the black tentacles, and once again shakes off the mental attacks coming from, well, somewhere. He flies down, and tries to hide as he approaches, but finds it to be impossible. He hits the monster like a tiny missile, but sees that most of his damage did nothing but take off extra flesh.

Stealth Skill says: "Your Stealth check is opposed by the Perception check of anyone who might notice you. ...It’s impossible to use Stealth while attacking, running, or charging."

The Golem hits AC 19 with it's AoO, and misses. Please update Blisses header with his Beast Form AC. By my calculation it's 10+6 dex+4 mage armor+1 dodge +1 na = 22.

Lance swoops over his ally and lands, quickly offering a ride.

Sky backs up and drinks a potion. This provokes an attack of opportunity from the golem, since it isn't a full withdraw. However, the Golem has already swung at Bliss as he charged, so there is no attack to make at Sky.

Kezzem swings his adamantine sword, and cuts through the Golems defenses! The golem takes 8 damage.

Murphy gives orders to his elementals.

Air Elemental. Murphy has the right of it. His elemental can usually vortex right through an opponent. It dispels much of the fog in the house.

Water Elemental: takes 5 damage from the heat of the Wall of Fire.

Enemy Actions

Flesh Golem(blue dot): is entangled. It makes a strength check to break free of the entangle spell, (a free action), and rolls an 15 against DC 14 (the DC of the spell), which succeeds.

It lumbers forwards, with it's simpleminded goal of destruction, and keeps pounding on Sky, the closest foe. It hits sky twice, against AC 30 and 23, for 13 and 14 damage. Sky takes 27 total damage. Sky is at -9 Hp and must roll to stabilize or he will continue to bleed to death on the ground. He drops anything he may have been holding.

Stabilizing and Unconsciousness.

On the character's next turn, after being reduced to negative hit points (but not dead), and on all subsequent turns, the character must make a DC 10 Constitution check to become stable. The character takes a penalty on this roll equal to his negative hit point total. A character that is stable does not need to make this check. A natural 20 on this check is an automatic success. If the character fails this check, he loses 1 hit point. An unconscious or dying character cannot use any special action that changes the initiative count on which his action occurs.

Characters taking continuous damage, such as from an acid arrow or a bleed effect, automatically fail all Constitution checks made to stabilize. Such characters lose 1 hit point per round in addition to the continuous damage.

You can keep a dying character from losing any more hit points and make him stable with a DC 15 Heal check.

If any sort of healing cures the dying character of even 1 point of damage, he becomes stable and stops losing hit points.

Healing that raises the dying character's hit points to 0 makes him conscious and disabled. Healing that raises his hit points to 1 or more makes him fully functional again, just as if he'd never been reduced to 0 or lower. A spellcaster retains the spellcasting capability she had before dropping below 0 hit points.

Flesh Golem:(Red dot): The Golem is looking pretty ragged. Chunks of flesh hang off here and there, and large sections of it appear to be crushed or damaged. It attacks Kezzem again, hitting AC 31 (confirming the crit vs AC 20) and hitting AC 20 for 22 and 12 damage respectively. Kezzem takes 34 total damage.

The Flesh Golem hits AC 31, which is a critical hit, and confirms against AC 20, which is higher than Kezzems 19. It's second attack hits AC 22. The penalty for squeezing has been taken into account. Kezzem takes 30 total damage.

Pressi pushes through the attack (preemptively burns a hero point (+8) , Roll 16+8+2 if attack=fear or an enchantment spell or effect).

It takes a second will save just to avoid banging against the domi homi door in frustration. Ok, Pressi, think, think....

A couple of things come to mind. First, it makes no sense that their host, having placed so many locks and traps and ways to screw them over, would simply leave a door open, balcony or no. (Though... wasn't the balcony where they heard the thumps from?)

Second, she couldn't save her friends by simply heading back into the melee, so she was stuck hoping that she could get into some sort of position that could keep the entire team alive. If she could shout at them to stop engaging and get going, she would.

Third, if she ever survives to meet Alleah or Shel on a street corner, they will be dead within minutes. She might take her family's devils bargain to gain spells just so she can find more creative ways to kill them.

Ok, enough pity party time. Have to get focused.

Suspecting more traps, Pressi throws a bag of flour this time, covering the balcony in white dust that undoubtedly will be electrocuted. If nothing zaps it, and she can't otherwise see traps (Perception 23, +2 for traps, darkvision), she makes her way towards the balcony and open door.

[OOC: Bliss's AC as an eagle - base 10 +4 mage armor +6 dex +1 size +1 ring +1 natural +1 dodge = 24. While moving, that's 28 with Mobility feat.]

Eagle-Bliss flies around the golem, not using his acrobatics to avoid AoOs that this movement provokes. Rather, given the golem's action last round, Bliss is trying to provoke an AoO! His AC vs such an attack would be AC28.

Bliss figures it is better to get the monster to use its AoO now, so that it will not be able to do so later in the round. And Bliss has taken no damage so far, so a whack by a golem would be worth it if the monster DOES hit -- worth it, that is, compared to a whack on Sky!

Eagle-Bliss lands next to the badly wounded Sky. That's a move action. He tries to dismiss the Beast Shape spell he cast so recently.

[OOC: The core rules say, "If the duration line ends with "(D)," you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell's effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell's verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity."

But in eagle-form, Bliss cannot make the usual gestures nor say the usual words of dismissal. Can he rid himself of this spell? Well, the duration of a Beast Shape spell is "Duration 1 min./level (D)" ... That suggests that one CAN dismiss a Beast Shape spell, even if you are in the form of some fantastic beast.

IF Bliss can dismiss the spell, great. If not, then the course of this round will change, I suppose.]

Bliss dismisses the Beast Shape spell. That's a standard action.

Now striving with all his heart to be a hero, Bliss uses a hero point. He uses it to gain an extra action, and that action is to cast Cure Moderate Wounds on Sky. His ley check is a 69, so that's OK. Sky is cured 15 hit points.

Bliss uses a free action to say to Sky, "Sky! Sky! You can get up! I've distracted the monster. You can get up and walk away while I hold him off!"

He uses another free action to taunt the monster. "Hey you big ox! Pick on someone your own size!"

To the air elemental, Murphy says, pointing to the opening behind him, 'Tule ulos tästä ikkunasta rakennuksen yläpuolella ja sen ulkopuolella. Poista kaikki sumu parvekkeella tai rakennuksessa. Jos löydät Garronin,' and here he describes how the halfling wizard is dressed, 'ilmoita minulle.' That is, 'Go out this window, over the top of the building and to the other side. Remove any fog on the balcony or in the building. If you find Garron,' whom he describes by size and clothing, 'please let me know.'

The air elemental goes out the window, up the side of the house, across to the balcony, and then races to clear the solid fog... which is pretty much all it can do - aside from seeing what, or whom, there is to see. It does have darkvision 60', but its perception at the moment is 6.

Seeing a bit of steam rising off the water elemental, the druid says, '"Hvis du kan fjerne brannen langt fra, kan du prøve den.' Translated: 'If you can dispel the fire from farther away, try that.'

'Hei, en innkallende som bryr seg om min velferd - litt, gurgles the wave. 'Huh, a summoner who cares about my welfare - a little.'

The water elemental tries to dispel the firewall. If 18 is enough to do it, it heads up the stairs to see if there is more fire to deal with. If not, the wee wave backs away from the flames as the summoner requested - but after the dispel attempt.

Murphy casts create water directly above the water elemental, hoping the infusion of about 18 gallons (144 lbs) of its element may help to cool and heal the critter.

He moves to where he can see both the flesh golem down the hallway, and his water elemental helper.

Earth elemental Rocky slams twice more into Fleshy's side, for 19 and 15 (total 34 hp) damage. If it looks as if the golem is taken down by Rocky (and Kezzem), Murphy says to Rocky, 'Find et andet stort væsen som den ene og angribe det.' which translates as: 'Find another large creature like that one, and attack it. Move the dead body if you need to get it out of the way.'

Pressi uses her brain instead of her daggers. She's certain it would make no sense for a host to leave a door open but all his windows locked. She tosses a bag of flour at the balcony. Thrown flour covers a single 5ft square. (Which square do you want to cover?) The flour, despite her expectations, does not explode with lightning.

APG wrote: Powder: Powdered chalk, flour, and similar materials are popular with adventurers for their utility in pinpointing invisible creatures. Throwing a bag of powder into a square is an attack against AC 5, and momentarily reveals if there is an invisible creature there. A much more effective method is to spread powder on a surface (which takes 1 full round) and look for footprints. DM Ken: If you wish, in the future, you can spread it on the balcony. I'll say 1 full bag covers a 10ft area (4 squares) with enough power to investigate it completely for either something invisible, or to leave enough on the floor to track future footprints.

(Assuming) Pressi continues her plan, she makes it to the balcony. She may now pursue the flour options, or head through the open door, on which she does not detect any traps.

2nd Floor

Bliss does his best to attract the Golems attention, and succeeds as planned! The clumsy flesh golem misses him by a large margin. He dispels his eagle form, and heals much of Sky's damage.

Murphy gives some orders, then casts Create Water on his elemental! The creature is surprised to have someone that cares about it's well being for once, and gets a +1 morale bonus on it's dispel attempt as it tries harder for it's summoner!

Water Elemental: Tries to dispel the Wall of Fire. The target number needed is 20, and with the bonus, it rolls a 19. Still not enough, so it moves back to avoid any more heat damage. At it's new square, it takes less harm. Water Elemental takes 4 damage.

Earth Elemental: Rocky KO's his opponent, and prepares to shamble towards the fight outside.

Air Elemental: Swoops upstairs to the balcony and spends a few critical moments analyzing Pressi, before it determines that she is not in fact, Garron. It seems to eager to go inside and check the bedroom, but is out of movement for now.

Murphy, having come within 20ft of the wall of fire, takes 4 damage.

Kezzem climbs over the hunk of flesh golem, and joins Murphy. The heat here is palpable. Also within 20 ft of the wall of fire, Kezzem takes 2 damage.

Sky comes to. He ignores Lance's request for takeoff, and dodges behind the back of the house.

Lance is left in an awkward pose, all alone. He might have flown straight up, but he forgot to make his fly check. His DM did it for him last time, AND reminded him that flying straight up requires a check to accomplish, but was too lazy to look up Lance's fly skill this particular time. He autofails the check, and stays on ground level.

[Okay, thanks, DM Ken. Other item: Why would Murphy, and in particular Kezzem, take damage when there is an intervening wall, not to mention the stairwell, between the flames and the two characters? Does not the wall provide a measure of shelter from the heat?]

"Hi Kezzem. Where is Garron? And everyone else? Who is behind this attack? You look a bit beat up, friend."

'Trinn bak meg, tapper en,' Murphy tells the steaming water elemental ('Step behind me, valiant one'). Despite that he knows summoned creatures are revived if they die when summoned, he cannot allow himself to cause even the momentary demise of one of these servants.

Murphy casts Summon Nature's Ally IV (note: Aug 23rd casting of this was actually V, rather than IV. SNA-V required for Large earth elemental) to call forth additional help at the beginning of the next round.

Rocky hears the grunts of another big mound of flesh coming both through the window his summoner broke, and down the hallway. He takes the (somewhat) easier route of squeezing through the window (perhaps damaging the frame on the way out), and hustles around the corner of the house - despite the small one (Sky) in his way. He steps over him if he can. He comes within spitting distance of the flesh golem.

On the balcony, the attractive window is closed. So, of greater attraction is the open door. The air elemental speeds through that opening, in search of Garron (Perception: 7) and fog. DM Ken - place him within the room beyond the open door, perhaps on the far side of the red - table? bed? couch? If Garron is found, the air elemental simply says, 'Garron' and then flies back to where it left the summoner. Otherwise, it continues the search into other areas and rooms as it may be able to do.

(OOC: I am going to resolve the DM question in this item, then do my normal post later.)

(Also, Pressi is invisible from a potion so the air elemental cannot see her unless it has something like true sight. I was careful to make sure throwing flour wouldn't break the spell.)

(I wanted to lay out what Pressi knows before I state what she does this link and next. She knows it's strange to see the door open but doesn't know why. She doesn't know that Garron or opponents are invisible, though she's familiar enough with invisibility in general. She doesn't know that Garron is on the balcony. She knows there are traps throughout, having seen Mookie blasted. And I am going to assume she knows she is making will save after will save - that's got to cause migraines.)

(What this means is that she's probably not going to be spending a lot of time looking for Garron or invisible figures. Frankly, it was a little more metagaming than I am comfortable with having her use the flour in the first place, though Pressi and I legitimately didn't know what would happen if I stepped on the balcony. This is a long way of saying that Pressi probably won't be looking carefully for Garron, but I am hoping she stumbles on him.)

---------------------

Pressi attempts to throw the flour straight across along her part of the balcony, so it lands on the square across from the middle of the open door. (If you draw a lines from Pressi West and the middle of the door south, where the lines intersect.) She hopes it will burst to cover more than one square but figures that will help enough.

(She hoped to throw it closer to the door but the corner of the house is in the way.)

-------------------

For a while, she stares at the air elemental appearing before her, trying to decide if 1) it can see her and 2) if it is friend or foe.

She wished it was easier to think, and is pretty sure that she is being mentally attacked. Worse, she can feel her precious hero "point" energy stealing away. With no hero points to buy into Hand of Domi, what can she possibly do now? (Will save 21+4 with after the fact hero point. I REALLY don't want to find out the hard way that this is a Save or Suck spell.)

Carefully, she finds herself following the elemental through the door, carefully looking for traps, Garron and any enemies. Specifically, she tries to find the source of what is attacking her, but hopes it will also stop if she steps into the room (she has 40 feet double movement while sneaking, so that will take her into the middle of the bedroom). (She will stop if she finds the source of the will saves or an area where the will saves stop.)

(OOC: I was really hoping to post after Murphy, at least see the resolution of the will save, but ok...)

Pressi began to babble to herself, running through scenario after scenario. If the golems had come in, they wouldn't have unlocked the door or left Garron for them, and if someone else had come in and grabbed Garron, the traps would have gone off. But that means that Garron that jerk sent the golems out and then hid or ran through the locked door... no, wait, he would have armed the traps before which means he would have locked the outside door....

So he had to leave when we were escaping, maybe by flying... but between true sighted mookie and the magic missile trap, we would have spotted him, so he had to get out after mookie, but then the tentacles and Bliss would have blocked him... I mean, if he's not in this room, and he's not in the locked room, and he's not downstairs, and he's not flown away, then where on earth does that leave?

She looks down at her own invisible hands, and then at the balcony she just came from, and came to a realization that her life will never be satisfactory.

"Garron," she whispers to the balcony. "Garron, if you can hear me, say something. I promise I won't pummel you to a pulp if you do so. Maybe."

She doesn't really expect an answer. Likewise, her attempts to signal the air elemental likely go unanswered.

Grudgingly, she moves back to start pouring flour out the front of the door, methodically focusing on any areas where she or the air elemental failed to step on him.

"Lance," she shouts out the door. "Lance, I don't know if you can hear me, but I can hear you and I am getting really sick of the whining. Oh, I don't have the perfect spell to avoid getting my hair mussed. I'm scrambling out here with teddy bears and flour. Buy a brain cell, start thinking creatively, and do literally anything. Throw a rock so Bliss doesn't get eaten if you have to, or at least some lights so he'll go down looking cool, but yeah literally anything. Also, Garron is somewhere on this balcony but invisible, so if you want to get on that, no hurry.

"Oh, and if big bertha down there can hear me?" she shouted at the flesh golem. "You should know that I'm up here touching Garron's stuff. Better get up here yourself, I bet."

Murphy post 20170831
Air
Upstairs, it is impossible for the little air elemental to resist the will which tries to take it over. (Need 22, will save has zero bonus: Will save 9/22). The aerial explorer succumbs to whatever effect prevails. If it still can, and has a measure of control over what it does, it tries to carry out its summoners last instructions - which I leave in the hands of DM Ken for the nonce.

Water vs Fire
On the first floor, Murphy calls forth another water elemental, this one of greater size (medium), adjacent the fire. He asks the little elemental to go aid its larger cousin, and the medium creature to quench (dispel) the wall of fire. The little guy's aid is minimal - that heat hurts! (d20+2=5), but the dolphin-shaped newcomer, fresh to arrive, takes it down with relative ease (dispel of d20+4=24, 20 needed). The intense flames are extinguished, and the stairway is available. (Right?)

The druid sighs with relief. The little water elemental splashes with joy against the larger one. Murphy asks them to ascend the stairs, and cool the heated walls and ceiling as well as they might.

"Kezzem, here is a wand of cure light wounds." Murphy tells him the command word. He taps the paladin once for 8 hp of curing (using next in the line of the 9 CLW rolls made for the wand July 20th: 8, 3, and 7 still remain, and new rolls made after those are used), then hands him the wand. "I believe you can use it on yourself, brother. Do so a few times, then, shall we ascend the stairs? Oh, and glad the sword helped!"

Earth vs Flesh
The earth elemental comes up on the next flesh golem, with its back to him, in a charge. Hits AC 23 (should be d20+15, rather than +14) for 14 hp damage (bonus of +1 on att/dam as both Rocky and Fleshy #2 are in contact with the ground).

Player Actions.
-----------------------

Bliss tries to lure the Golem into the entangled area, as well as avoid an aoo. He succeeds, on both counts.

Lance keeps hovering, watching Sky, and ignoring Pressi.

Pressi starts pouring flour outside the front door, and covers the first area that doesn't include the path she and the elemental took to enter the room. Flour flies around, and the area is saturated.

There, on the corner of the balcony, lying motionless, is the now flour covered outline of one Mr. Garron, Wizard of the Club of Halflings Who Eat More Meals Than Is Expected. He isn't moving, and doesn't seem to react at all to being doused with flour.

Pressi herself is now quite the mess, she too is revealed in the flour, as she occupied the same squares she saturated. She isn't sure if her taunt worked, because right now the Golem is stuck in some vines. As she contemplates her next move, after chewing out Lance, she is attacked from behind...

Murphy gives a wand to Kezzem, and bids him to heal.

Earth Elemental: Attacks the golem and lands a solid hit. Old flesh flies off.

Water Elementals: Working together, the Wave and Dolphin dispel the flame wall. The larger elemental takes 3 damage, as it is summoned into the heat of the flames.

Air Elemental/: is no longer under Murphy's control, but he has no way of knowing this.

Kezzem takes a total defense action, and doesn't move. He seems to space out for a bit.

Sky continues to hide around the corner of the house. He uses the total defense action to raise his AC by 4, once again.

Enemy Actions

Flesh Golem(blue dot): fails his relfex save. He cannot attempt to break out of the entangle this turn, so it punches the earth elemental twice. Rocks go flying all helter skelter. Rocky takes 11 and 12 damage, respectively.

-------------------------------
Air Elemental attacks Pressi. It charges, and Pressi was not expecting it's attack, and she is flat footed. It hits AC 19, vs FF AC of 16. Pressi takes 2 damage.

"Kezzem, heal yourself, or whatever you need to do. I'm going up the stairs, see if I can find Garron, or bad guys might be up there."

Murphy hustles, almost catching up to the water elementals on the stairs. [The stairs do go up, right?]

The water elementals do as bidden, cooling the stairwell walls, ceiling, steps with splashes of water as they ascend.

Outside, the earth elemental whales on the entangled flesh golem, using power attacks (hit AC 31, and AC 20) to do 19 and 16 hp (35 total) damage to the second golem he has faced so early this morning. Though receiving a few blows himself, Rocky finds it satisfying to drive his hardened knuckles deep into the yielding, stitched-together flesh.

Murphy asks the elementals to try to slip through the door (perhaps a keyhole, or narrow space at the bottom or top of the door), and see if they can open it from the far side. The medium elemental, closest to the door, tries it first, and, if successful, the smaller follows. The first through tries to open the door - though doors may not be too common where it comes from (I rolled a 13 on d20 for the water elemental to open the door - not certain what modifications ought to be included).

The air elemental stands still, then winks out (summoning ended).

Rocky, having fulfilled his last instruction from his summoner, look to see if there are other big fleshy things to attack. He heads over to peer around the corner beneath the balcony. [Large earth elemental perception: 26]

As he waits for the water elementals to try to deal with the door, Murphy casts cure light wounds upon Kezzem for 7 hp of healing for the paladin. "Any idea how others are doing? Where is Garron?" he asks his companion.

If the door does not open, he will head down the stairs, as he does not think he will be able to handle the door himself and, besides - where is everyone else?

Query: On the map it appears the wall to the outside has been blasted open. Is this the case? Should the door not open, he will go outside, and turn to the right, looking down roughly toward Pressi and/or the be-floured Garron-on-the-ground.

Kezzem tries to make his way to the commotion.

Pressi injures herself, yet again.

Sky comes around the corner of the house, shouting for his allies.

Lance easily detects the magical effects on Pressi. He feels the spell out, a thick knot of magic in the base of her mind. He applies a sledgehammer of dispelling magic to the effect Not long after, Garron sits up, and starts coughing. He looks bleary eyed at those around him, and curses.

Pressi falls in a slump to the ground.

"Fiddlesticks", he says. And with a *poof*, he casts teleport and vanishes.

The water elementals manage to figure out the door, which just leads to a number of shelves and books on golemcraft, undead theorems, and ways to create minions from everyday household items.

Back outside, Pressi slowly comes to. Something still doesn't feel right, like there's someone looking over her shoulder at all times. Try as she might, cannot turn quick enough to catch whatever the force is. Just as she calms down, she hears a familiar voice, sounding very disappointed, in her head.

"Well, Swordling, those are both great questions. I don't know - why - this happened, but a piece of me is still in you. I don't think it's a huge deal for the - real - me. After all, he teleported away. That doesn't make anything less troublesome for you and I, however."

Pressi feels a few differences, chief among them a power bubbling up from within herself she hadn't noticed before. It was like restless energy, but all in the pit of her belly and buzzing fiercely. As she comes to grips with her new situation, she notices Lance.

He runs his hand twice over Mookie's head and partway down the feathers along his back. He places his hand on Bliss's shoulder gently, and lets it stay there for a moment. The druid then rises, and begins to speak. "I was asleep, then heard an explosion outside my room. I awoke to what sounded like a battle beginning. The room was filled with a thick, thick fog. He goes on to describe next summoning a large earth elemental as he heard the sound of heavy footsteps outside the room; the elementals striking the flesh golem as it broke down the door; the air elemental being sent to clear more fog from hallway, and being sent upstairs to clear fog and find Garron; 'Rocky' the earth elemental continuing to battle the flesh golem, then being sent to find and fight a similar creature outside, with first Murphy, then Rocky exiting via the room's window. Murphy hurried along the side of the house, saw a fire within at the stairway, summoned first a small water elemental, then a medium sized one of the same sort to work to extinguish the wall of fire.

[more to write, must take break to work...]
So, Murphy

Continuing, the druid tells of Kezzem joining him after a while, and then, after the fire was quenched by the larger of the two water elementals, of them managing to open the door into a library, just after Kezzem left his side to return to the ground floor. Murphy quickly describes the general contents of the library - books on the fabrication of golems, undead theorems, and ways to create minions from everyday household items. In fact, he goes into more detail, actually repeating exactly what he said to each elemental, and describing the intense heat from the magical flames... but you can read those things for yourselves.

"I then hurried out here, where I found you all."

Answering Bliss, the druid says, "I spent a good deal of time on our trip back from Bright Springs reading through one of Uthvas's journals. Yes, I should be able to discern his penmanship."

He walks over to Pressi, and gives her a kiss on the cheek, a squeeze of the hand. "Tell me what you can of what you saw, and what happened here tonight, beloved."

He turns to the others. "Each of you, please, tell us what you saw and heard, what you experienced, and where things happened."

[You need not write out a full narrative. A simple, "{your character name} tells everything that he saw happening," would suffice. Murphy will pester each one of you until you spill the beans!]

Pressi tried her hardest to concentrate on what was real and what was fake. The voices continuing in her head. Her robe of alteration seemingly crawling into her skin. Her weapons clanging about... wait, since when did she have weapons? "Less troublesome... what did you do? What does this mean? How do we stop it?"

She looked up as Lance aimed a spell at her. "So, now you've chosen to contribute," she snapped. "Stand down, I may hear voices in my head, but I'm pretty sure I'm back in control... ish. Come on, I'll explain on the way."

----------------

Pressi heads back towards Uthvas' room and his balcony (climb take 10=17), after extoling Lance and Sky to follow her. "In here, I want to check some things...."

She stopped upon seeing Bliss cradle Mookie. "I am so sorry, I don't even know what to say."

As Murphy came in, she paused. She wasn't even sure how she looked - was her hair even shorter? - and could only imagine what he did or didn't hear. She did squeeze his hand a little hard before returning to look over the entire bedroom, especially the chests and alter she had considered checking. "Should have been less worried about Garron and more worried about what this stuff was," she remarked. (Perception 35+1 for traps.)

In response to Murphy's questions and Bliss continuing to look for vampires, she talked about how she woke them up, the activities up above, how she had come up here searching for Garron, and how he seemed - or at least a trace of him - to still be in her head.

"He was using... Magic Jar? I think that's what he called it. He was going to possess us one by one and bring us up here to stand motionless while his golems tore us apart. But something something didn't know what he was doing, and had to scramble. He placed an unlocked door knowing we'd flock to it, and then went invisible. He kept taking cracks at me, took over the elemental, and then...

"I'm not sure all of me ever found her way back. And all of him certainly didn't."

Lance floats down and alights on the balcony. He watches sympathetically as Bliss tends to Mookie, and listens as Pressi explains what occurred. Or, at least, what Pressi claims occurred. Lightning continues to dance between his fingers as he stood ready.

"Could you elaborate on this soul-sharing? Is it like an empathic link? Can he see or hear us?"

Garrons voice sounds alarmed.

"Good heavens girl, your team mate is insane! It might be best if you keep our discussions a secret, at least from -that- one."

Bliss neither detects, nor finds, and conscious thoughts from creatures, living or dead, not accounted for. Detect magic lights up a few areas protected by alarm spells, but nothing else.

Murphy tries his best to make heads and tails of everything, and is quick to offer Pressi support. He does NOT think the handwriting of Garron matches that of Uthvas. He's fairly certain that they write with the opposite hand!

It seems far more likely that Garron was working with the former. In fact, it makes those other spots on the map all the more suspicious.

Lance isn't convinced that Pressi isn't still controlled, and still threatens her with magical lightning while asking questions. Pressi doesn't seem to pay it a bit of mind, annoyed that when the lightning sorcerer finally acts, it's to threaten a comrade.

The search of Garrons house turns up little of value. The house itself sustained quite a bit of damage between shattered windows, elementals, and fires. Left almost exactly where they started, with a map and some red circles, the halfings have some decisions to make.

They know several forces have become active in Humbles Ford, all with fealty to Uthvas. They've defeated a Leng Ghoul, and now they have forced Garron, apparently a necromancer who is at least loosely tied to Uthvas, to retreat somewhere.

Pressi's unique situation seems to be mostly a case of magic gone wrong, though how far the effects will reach and what exactly they entail is unknown to any of them, except perhaps, the voice in Pressi's head.

"Lance, I swear, if you don't stop preparing to aim an electrical discharge at Pressi, you will regret it greatly," Murphy warns. "It looks like Pressi has experienced some sort of transformation - you, of all people, having gone through something similar not more than 5 or 6 hours ago, ought to understand that. Though, yeah, it does seem strange. As time goes on, I think we all will have to become more accustomed to strange. Now, put that hand down, and please, will you tell us what you saw and heard over the last few minutes? It appears we were scattered all over the place, and it might be wise to piece things together."

"Kezzem, please tell me everything that happened to you tonight - what you saw and heard."

"Sky, your turn. What happened to you, what did you observe?"

"Bliss - please tell us, if you can, what you saw happen here tonight," he asks in a gentle voice - though Bliss already has done much investigation and, one would presume he communicated that to the group.

And then, regarding Pressi, Murphy tells her, "You already have told us much. You look a little... different. Whatever we go through together, whatever changes there may be in our lives, you are mine, and I am yours."

EVERYBODY: As stated in an earlier post, you need not write everything your character observed - a simple, "Sky tells everyone about what happened to him once the attack began," or the like should suffice. Just an acknowledgement that you've responded to Murphy's request. As mentioned, he will pester each party member until they do so.
======
After the reports are in, Murphy says, "None of us have slept much, or at all. Two of our members have quit the team. Poor dear Mookie has been killed. We don't know what may be found at the other three sites on the map - the old cemetery, the flower field, the old communal building. Shall we now go to the other three sites? Or, inform the Constable of the goings-on, then get some sleep ourselves, and rejoin the investigations after we rest? I have used most of my spells. I cannot shape change until the dawn. I know some of the rest of us also have spent a good deal. What now, friends?"

Lastly, he puts his wand of cure light wounds to work. Will show rolls and who benefits in later post.

Pressi watched warily as Lance continued to advance upon her with his spell, and as Kezzem fired lesser restores at her. You know, Garron, I am beginning to think you might be right...

She felt a wave of relief as Murphy stood in to protect her, just as her own arcane energy had begun to flow from her fingertips. She pulled back her spells out of shock and embarrassment. I've got to say, that has never happened to me before.

"Guys, guys, I may have overstepped in what I said before. I don't think I am being controlled or that this is a disease... though it would have been nice to find the soul gem he was using. It's just some faint echoes, that's all."

Pressi smiled as best she could at Murphy. Maybe she could be nicer when she got used to losing her body, but this would be tough - insecure about the old body, fearful of the new, she would need time. "I did need to hear that, thank you."

So, as long as you're here bombarding me and I'm stuck with this body, anything in particular you want to tell me about it. A user's manual perhaps? Wait, wait...

Pressi dug through what was apparently her new possessions, pulling out what was apparently her new holy symbol from Maab.

Flipping from page to page - welcome to the wild world of witch based bounty hunting, newly rolled out witch form granted early, legal pronouncements - Pressi began to review the various abilities, weapons, and spells suddenly granted to her (with surprisingly little loss in melee offense or defense). Waving off Murphy's wand, she hits herself with a CLW spell, watching the wounds heal. "Huh, look at that."

She explains to Murphy that they have two more options unconsidered. First, she can cast a divination that could tell them what is going on, but it would take 10 minutes. Second, she can take some of the treasure to cast Lesser Planar Ally to collect a reinforcement. (She considers trying Relentless Tracker but it probably won't work on someone that teleported out.)

"What's worse is that if we go to the three sites, we might have to split the party. What if they only strike one location, or they strike all three at once? As for contacting someone in command, that might be best - but I can't let something horrible happen while I sleep. If people are that depleted, I could try scouting the area, taking advantage of my new body."

Murphy uses the wand of cure light wounds over and over again, listening to others as he helps cure them. Everyone, who is alive, that is, is back at full hit points. Murphy heals everyone, and tries to put everything into a neat timeline. He comes up with a plan to rob Garron of all of his books, and starts gathering them. The books are heavy, and numerous. Nearly 100 lbs worth when all gathered together. The party can either figure out their transportation, or destroy them.

While poking around, he finds a box of peculiar socks and assorted cold weather gear, seemingly attuned to druids. (Your lotto prize is now available.)

Kezzem answers, as do all the other party members, even if they have yet to vocalize their response.

Pressi starts checking out some possessions she didn't have before. She mentions wanting to find a soul gem, and Garron butts in.

"Not going to find it here girl. It's with my main body. The spell ended, he has the gem, but some of him stuck around in you, and made me. Don't ask me why.

It seems that the party has options now.

Divinations. Scouting. Resting. Seeking help.

At least everyone is healed at this point, thanks to the nearly depleted cure light wounds wand.

Murphy relaxes as Lance stands down.

"The Second Dinner Club towers are right across the street," Murphy comments. "Let us go and awaken them, warn them against their newest member - whether it is Garron himself who is to blame, or someone who has possessed or corrupted him, we do not yet know with certainty. Tell them we have his library, and ask their counsel. I hope neither of them has been similarly corrupted. Until they give me cause to do otherwise, I shall trust their goodwill for now."

"Perhaps Garron will not return here soon. Bliss - I am so glad to hear he believes he has the means to bring back Mookie - he has just fallen asleep here. How about if a few of us remain here, and a few go right now to speak with Veseley and Tiana. I will go, and carry a few of Garron's tomes. Who will go with me? We'll talk with them, then report back. Now, we also need to alert Constable Roscoe Hornblower, and see what he recommends. Once they have been alerted, then perhaps the rest of us can get some rest - whether here, or at our group's burrow by the river, and see about beginning again this afternoon."

If Pressi will go along, Murphy takes the time to try to talk privately with her, seeking better to understand - as much as she is willing to communicate - what is going on with her. If she wants to try her divination spell before they set out, he is happy to wait.

"Thank you, Kezzem, and everyone, for letting us know what went on tonight. So - my air elemental was taken over, maybe by Garron, Pressi? Oh, and yes, Kezzem, your pants. Want to come with us to the Tower? And Lance, Sky - stay here or go with?"

Summary: Murphy asks who will go with him to walk to the very nearby Wizards' Tower of the Second Dinner Club (taking along some of Garron's library), and who will stay with sleeping Bliss. Once the wizards are alerted, he says he intends to alert the town constable, show the map and giving a brief description of the Leng Ghoul and zombies encounter, the map, and Garron, and the flesh golems, and library. Then, likely seek rest for all who need it.

When people have decided, then Murphy heads out to do as described - unless someone has a much better plan.

Bliss falls asleep.

Kezzem is lost without his pants, and decides to go find them, while Lance cautiously withdraws his threatening posture.

Murphy also has a plan for rest, as dawn approaches, but has a final errand. He tries to drum up escorts to go to the wizards tower with him, but gets no immediate volunteers.

He goes alone, delivers his warning, and though there was some initial shock, the other spell casters thank him for the information, and recommend he leave Garrons books with them.

When he returns, he finds that someone had already alerted the good constable, who seems to be fairly clear headed despite the hour. Riding a slow moving pony down the same road Murphy is traveling, he ambles his mount towards Murphs.

"Top o' the twilight to ya, Mr. Pipewood. Some folks reported hearing a fuss down at Garrons place. IS that where you're going too?"

Pressi continued to flip through her newest powers and abilities. "I'm glad that you are able to bring Mookie back," she told Bliss. "... Maybe he can tell me what a harper is."

Down below outside the house, a leapord sat grooming. Only occassionally would she side glance at the carrier chickens, licking his lips. Otherwise, she remained with a disinterested look.

Regarding the books, Pressi takes a quick perusal (perception 17 nat 1, spellcraft 27) for any books or notes that stand out - anything that might indicate what he was working on or where he is, or that even might seem like a particular book of value.

With the standoff done, it became increasingly clear that the team was in no mood to rush off to yet another battle, as anti-heroic as it might be. And she supposed the team had a point. With three possible locations, depleted resources, missing team members, and a betrayal that cost them dearly, it was probably prudent if cowardly that they avoid rushing off yet again to what might be a trap or too late.

She hated being prudent but cowardly.

Murphy proposed splitting up into three groups - and seems quite interested that she join his. But she is torn. One of the few characters that still doesn't need sleep, she might need to stand guard - though it seems like lots of her teammates would like to stay where they are.

As for the constable... she might be the fastest messenger, as someone who could ride her cat or broom speedily. But she really didn't like the idea of explaining this to the constable in the middle of a public area - her friends and boyfriend barely understood, and she barely felt like explaining to them what it is like. She volunteers to go if nobody else will do it, but otherwise agrees to travel with Murphy instead.

(She doesn't cast divination unless Bliss needs her to stay. It's a 10 minute casting time and Murphy seems to want to get going.)

"Yes sir. Glad you found me here, Mister Hornblower." Murphy lays out briefly the encounter at the farm and the map they found there - with the four places marked, which he enumerates, then in greater detail the goings on with Garron, and his teleported retreat, and the brief interaction with the other two members of the Second Dinner Club. "I'm just going to transfer the rest of the library to Veseley and Tiana, then I think it wise to move the members of the Sword to another place to sleep. I realize that perhaps we should investigate the other three spots, but most of our people have been sorely pressed, and need to rest."

Roscoe Hornblower already knows most of the members of Humble's Sword. He refreshes their acquaintance if needed. And asks, other than Garron's house, whether there is anything else the Constable may be aware of they ought to know about.

DM Ken: 1st Floor Map - 2nd Floor

The constable's eyes bulge at the constant stream of important information. He quickly takes out a pad from a pocket, brushes off the crumbs of some previously finished pastry or another, and starts writing.

"Uh, do keep carrying on. No suspicious reports other than this one. I don't mean to sound like I want to push this all on you, but me an' some boys -could- check out some of these places.. an' hope there's no zombies or evil wizards or linguini ghouls an' such, but maybe it might take us awhile to gather up our .. uh.. gear. So if you happen ta' get there first, be careful! Such is life I 'spose..."

With a tug on the pony's reigns, the constable turns and heads back from whence he came, running through a very short list of halflings reliable enough for such a large problem.

Murphy's intent was not to overwhelm Roscoe... but, there it is. "Perhaps a few of us from the Sword can do a lookover, but it will have to wait until after dawn. Will see what my friends are up for - but again, there were many injuries, and exhaustion may be setting in. Good luck, good Constable."

Murphy reports back to Garron's house, telling his friends what the wizards and constable had to say. He empties his haversack, and fills it with as many of the rest of the books as he can - saving a few - especially if there is a journal or two - for review by members of the Sword. He finds that Pressi is looking things over, and asks which ones she wants to hold onto.

"After dawn, I can do some aerial spying over the three areas - but would love some company on that task. Though she has left us, there is some value in what Alleah had to say." He asks if any would come with him to take most of the rest of Garron's library across the street to the Wizards' Tower. If so, he'll chat with them. If not, he delivers - and does let Vesseley and Tiana know if they keep a journal or two.

Then comes back, reloads his haversack, and asks whoever will stand watch (Pressi?) to wake him once the sun begins to rise. And he sleeps - in a common area, so that they are not separated from each other as earlier.

Unless anyone interrupts, Pressi asks Maab the following question (CL 7): "When should I go to each of the three places and when should I go to Garron again?"

With that done, and Roscoe not coming in (she actually would have hidden if he had), she and Murphy begin a plan to drag the books - which is not necessarily difficult. Between her familiar and an unseen servant, they can drag 100 lbs easily across the street if its tied up enough.

She agrees to stand watch and to accompany Murphy for aerial spying.

She motions, and everybody sits down. The queen picks the Mookie-flower, and then Mookie is a flower-teacup. She pours the tea and hands Bliss tea in the Mookie-cup. He understands that if he drinks her tea, they will have made a deal. Bliss bows, takes the teacup, and sips his tea.

But, if all are ready, we can skip that, and just all go at once. Let's decide together after dawn comes, and see how people are doing, all right?"

Pressi Only: Highlight to display spoiler: { There is a long silence before you receive an answer.

"What is this? A new agent of accord, and a new witch in my court? I am so very rarely given the joy of experiencing surprise!"

The voice is smooth, like a purr. It seems, both curious and amused by your contact.

"I shall wonder, can you appease both your queen and Pantheon? Neither he nor I are fond of sharing out heralds in your Wold..."

The is another slight pause, and then laughter.

"Delay too long, my new herald, and your greatest foe will marshall his forces together. A cornered animal is more dangerous if it has a pack around it. Just take care not to let yourself get too exhausted hunting the doe, to defend yourself from the stag."

}

Searching the house proves to be fairly frustrating. It seems that almost all of Garrons possessions are of little value. From his clothing, to his books - most of which are self-created copies of other texts, nothing seems to be too extravagant.

Perhaps his house once held value, but now large parts of it are smashed, broken, or burned.

(There is some confusion on my part in what happens when. There are references to a future trip to the wizards tower, but Murphy seems to have already gone. Soooo...)

After the house is searched, authorities warned, wizards informed, and plans made, the consensus (seems) is for a period of rest. The sun is barely becoming visible as the halflings make it to their own home (or homes). The constable sits out front, waiting on the others to approach .

Behind him, waits an unknown halfling. The stranger is fairly tall for his race, he wears basic brown tunic that covers his mithral chain shirt in all but a few places. On his back he carries a bow, and a brown painted shield.

He has messy brown hair and brown eyes. He carries himself with an air of confidence, but isn’t overly gregarious. He seems to be somewhat familiar with Constable Roscoe.

"This is my cousin, Hobie. I think he can help you..you said your crew needed rest. We can hold the watch out here until the afternoon. You all go get your 8 hours. We can introduce ourselves afterwords."

Quick reply on 2nd trip: Trip one with with a few books. Trip two, shortly thereafter (and after seeing the constable) was to take most of the rest of the books to the wizards - should be a very short exercise - Murphy puts as many as will comfortably fit into his handy haversack, Pressi and Lance help carry whatever is left over. However, if Garron had one or more journals, the party retains those for review.

"Hobie, well met. I'm Murphy. Ah - thank you, Constable Roscoe. So, folks, those who need sleep, especially for recovery of spells, now is the time. Though I don't need it for spell recovery - I may need it shortly for a measure of sanity.

"If there is one among us who is fine without the rest, If you could visit Pirnook's General Store - he has a link to the Catacombs. I'll put in 250 gold pieces, if the rest of the party can chip in a total of 500 gp more. A wand of cure light wounds costs 750, and can replace the one I've been using on everyone. I have bought several such wands over the past few years for everyone's benefit. If someone else can help share the bill for this one, that would be appreciated." He gives a bag with 250 gp in it to whoever offers to visit the Catacombs.

Once that is resolved, he says, "I will say my morning prayers, then join the snoozers. I'm not even hungry." He does down a fair amount of water, offers some to others who are thirsty, then goes outside for his morning devotions. He focuses primarily upon Eberyon, seeking wisdom and guidance. He also acknowledges and seeks the favor of Maab, Flower, Alemi, Domi, Gargul, Ffloy, Pantheon, and gives a nod to Wardd, whose moon he hopes one day to visit. He ends with a closing prayer to Eberyon. He changes up some spells. If Pressi is still around and awake, he talks with her for ten, fifteen minutes, asking if she has questions, concerns, counsel - and a kiss, then joins others in slumber.

Once sleep is done with
At the time of awakening, he washes up, listens to any reports that come in - and takes time to start an acquaintance with Hobie. "Murphy Leafwin Pipewood," he introduces himself. "You look vaguely familiar, I think, Hobie. Tell us about yourself, and we'll do likewise."

Bliss remains asleep under his cauldron in Garron's front yard. When he wakes up, his sees that his cauldron looks funny. Kind of something like this. Bliss is not surprised at the transformation; indeed, he makes note of a lot of other changes.

Bliss thinks about his witch magic. Lots has changed with that too. He stands with his cauldron and concentrates. He is making a concentration check (1d20+6+3) vs DC13 ... he rolls a 28, so no problem. A small drop of dark red glowing liquid appears and then evaporates so fast. That takes an hour. Bliss ends up with all his new spell slots ready to cast.

Then Bliss concentrates again, one hand on his new cauldron. He has two checks to make for this ritual magic to work. The first check is a 1d20+17 to hit a Handle Animal DC20 [Grimalkin]. He rolls a 25, no problem. Then he has to roll a 1d20+20 to hit a Spellcraft DC30 [Sharing, Shield of Faith]. He rolls a 29! A miss!, but at the very last minute, he makes a heroic effort for a +4 retroactive bonus, to pass! [OOC: hero point removed from sheet, plus the ones used on Aug 25 and 28, three total gone]

Bliss laughs and changes into a black cat!

The BlissCat wanders around to find the rest of his friends. When he finds them, wherever they are, he changes back to himself in front of everybody, then back and forth. He laughs again.

"Look what I can do!" he exclaims.

Hobie nods to Murphy's initial comment, but remains mostly silent throughout the group's rest. He can be seen chatting with his cousin throughout the watch, his solid demeanor turning to jolly as the two share old stories and inside jokes. He is careful to remain watchful, but appears to be very appreciative of the opportunity to catch up and spend time with the constable.

After the group has awakened, he'll greet Murphy and any other who might be around and offer greetings. "Nice to meet you Mr. Pipewood. I'm not sure why you find me familiar, but I've traveled much with various groups, so it's possible our paths have crossed. As far as telling you about myself, the name is Hobie. I'm usually an adventurer for hire,"

At this point he casts the constable a look of genuine appreciation and affection.

"But my cousin thought my skills might be useful, and personally asked for me to be here. I can't deny him any request. Pleased to be here, for however long I might be useful."

With the last words he smiles and nods his head at the group.

He also has a membership badge for the Woldian League of Adventurers, and a medal of some sort as well.

"Hi Constable Roscoe!" he says. He bows to the new person and says, "Hi Mister Hobie. It is nice to meet you. I like your armor. Very elfly. I like elves."

A shy sly gleam comes in his eyes. "Look what I just learned to do!" He changes shape back and forth to a cat and back, grinning in both forms.

He is also very tired. He sleeps, snoring loudly.

Shopping (need 500gp from others to buy healing for the group)
If someone else does not do it, Murphy stops at Pirnook's General Store, and shops for a wand of cure light wounds / CLW. He does ask if other party members can chip in for a total of 500 gp. "No clerics among us, right? Contribute for your health," Murphy encourages with a smile.

Meeting Hobie
In Murphy, Hobie sees a towhead, his wavy hair a light sandy color. His face is dappled with freckles. Now well rested, one may note the small gap between his top teeth, and a twinkle in his eye. He stands 3'8" - tall for a halfling.

"I'm a druid, in service to Humble's Ford, to my friends and kin, the Valley, and Eberyon. My family's burrow is over yonder," and he points not too far off from what Hobie might recognize as Madame La'Roue's Herbarium. "I was a member of the ragtag team of halflings who banded together a few years ago to play in the Crescent Valley Games as Humble's Swordd. I'm the only one left from the original group who still travels with it - though you may know of Hazel - that is, Bob Danderfluff LaRue, a ranger, and Alouryn Buttercup Bumblebottom, a cleric of Flower, who also were in the group. You'll be able to see them over at our burrow by the river. At the time they married, we all moved into that burrow, and they take care of things while we are gone.

"You missed by less than a day Shel Breezelee Kromnite, from the first day of the games. She and Alleah Lighttouch just parted ways with us as we went to battle a foul creature near a farm between here and Angel Springs."

Murphy pauses. "Sorry if I'm drowning you in names and recollections. I'm not widely known for being succinct," he grins. "Anyway, we would welcome your help, Hobie. Let's see what we can do together!"

(OOC: That... is a lot of stuff I have to deal with. Lets take it one at a time....)

Divination

Pressi summarizes the base of the prophecy (leaving out Maab's introduction to her)(there was some stuff she wanted to say back but divination doesn't really allow for two way communication, apparently). She explains that the sites are apparently areas where Uthvas is gathering forces. But Maab also gave a warning about stretching ourselves out too thin. Moving together after eight hours of rest might allow Uthvas to escape with more power. Splitting up or moving without rest might stop his reinforcements but leave them weakened against him.

For those who press further, Pressi provides the full portion: Highlight to display spoiler: {"Delay too long, my new herald, and your greatest foe will marshall his forces together. A cornered animal is more dangerous if it has a pack around it. Just take care not to let yourself get too exhausted hunting the doe, to defend yourself from the stag."}

Overnight Watch

It seems that the group is in agreement to rest the eight hours and then move on as a singular group. Still unsure of how she will be greeted with her new form and if the group will need her, she spends the night at the guild hall with the rest of the group.

At the end of the rest period, Bliss' actions remind her that she needs to do her own ritual.

Her handling of the drop of wolds blood is weak but she manages to contain it easily enough (concentration check 17 vs DC 14).

Before Bliss can spend his hero point, he sees Pressi beside him, joining within his coven with her own basic cauldron. (I'm not sure if Bliss is counting Pressi's and Harper's involvement, but she should be able to make the plus one. Spellcraft +18).

She gathers up her new pet and feeds him with the dead carrier chicken and whatever milk they can find. Harper spends the rest of the morning sniffing away at the group, with particular attention to Bliss' cat form.

Money Matters

Pressi finds that she actually has the 750 gp to return to Lance and does so. But that only leaves her 40 gp to contribute to the fund, which she does.

It's up to Lance if he wants to contribute to the wand fund. (Go ahead and add to your sheet either way.)

(While there are no clerics, Pressi volunteers to act as the primary healer/buffer at least for now. With everyone else on the team having at least some healing magic, she shouldn't have too much trouble keeping everyone up.)

Roscoe and Introductions

It takes a while but Pressi finally heads outside to greet Roscoe, adjusting her red hair, smoothing out her monk's outfit and robes. "Well, hello, glad to see you finally arrive."

(Disguise check 25 to spot that Pressi is using a wig and makeup to hide the changes to her body. Changes to her gear can only be spotted with true seeing.)

"Really crazy stuff that went on here, so you want to be careful. Dark necromatic magics and at a time when witch stuff seems to be out of control. I mean, could you imagine what would happen if a halfling got twisted beyond belief in some bizarre ritual, what would happen to that halfling? Seriously, what would happen to that hypothetical halfling if he or she were to return home having clearly been changed and gained dark powers?"

She watches as Bliss seems rather more comfortable with his changes, though they know him as a witch. Still, she wonders if she is being overly cautious, and watches closely for Roscoe's reaction.

Later on, in private, Pressi decides to drop the disguise to... Hobie, was it? Her new black hair, complexion, and armor revealed, Pressi gets to asking him about his own build and skills. If he's in a sharing mood, she may talk about her own past. Otherwise, she asks him about what he sees as the group role (particularly out of combat) so they can avoid stepping on each other's toes.

Bliss / CatBliss (HP80) (Cayzle)

Bliss bows and seems a little speechless as Pressi volunteers to help him with his ritual.

"Um, my Lady Queen, ... You, um, well, thank You very much!" he says to Her.

If She seems to want to do Her own ritual, Bliss will help Her (offering a +2 on ritual skill checks), happy to share the chance of danger with no benefit to himself (he is already benefitting from his own ritual; can't benefit from the same ones twice in the same day).

Or if the Lady just wants to share his ritual, he cannot share the cat form, but he is happy to split 60 rounds of Shield of Favor (30 for Pressi, 30 for Bliss -OR- 20 for Bliss, 20 for Pressi, and 20 for Harper ... either is fine for Bliss!!). It IS the Ritual of Sharing, after all!

He bows and remains tongue-tied around Pressi, but keeps his eyes on Her wherever She goes.

CatBliss is not nearly so reserved around Pressi's new leopard friend. Being two sizes smaller than Harper, Bliss is like a kitten to the leopard ... and acts like it. He walks underfoot (tiny creatures can occupy the same space as larger creatures) and "hunts" Harper's tail.

If he can, he changes his appearance to look spotted (or at least calico) in the same shades as Harper.

[OOC to DM Ken ... can you use Beast Shape II to alter your appearance? coloration, for example?]

[DM Ken: The color, spotting, and attributes of your cat form are up to you, as long as they are naturally occurring. My Bengal kittens tell me spots and rosettes are totally doable.]

As Bliss repeatedly shifts between halfling and cat form, Hobie was initially skeptical, but over time becomes slightly entertained by his amusing demeanor.

To Pressi's questioning Hobie would respond "Well, as for my skills and abilities, I like to think that I am quite capable with ol' Prowler here," he touches his bow, "and I can hold my own down deep with a sword and shield as well. But you are asking me about what role I might fill in the group? I'm not sure what you might need, I'm just here on a favor to my cousin, he seems to think I can help you out. I've served a lot of parties a lot of roles, I've done my share of trap spotting, I've been a scout, I've talked my groups out of some sticky spots, I'd say I'm a terrible cook, but I've done that before too. One group even hired me to just carry their gear. If you want to know my skills, I'd say one of my best talents is that I can avoid being seen when I want to."

A DC 13 Sense Motive check (opposed by my bluff) would tell you:

"Oh, yes Roscoe. There was something suspicious I came across recently. Most people around these parts know that my services are for hire, but these days I'm careful to only work for noble causes. Anyway, this guy came up to me in a pub one night, I couldn't see his face, he wore a cowl and hood, but he was definitely no halfling. Big guy, human, elf, something else. He came up to me with some strange fungus and asked me to secretly spread it around this place west of town. I told him no, I told him I do don't those kinds of jobs. Seemed like that fungus was gonna poison innocent people. The guy gave me the creeps."

Hobie seems genuinely disturbed by this encounter.

"Anyway, that place he wanted me to visit was that abandoned communal living home out west. I didn't think anybody lived there so I was confused why he wanted me to poison it. I took a quick look, and I think there might be some people living there after all. Maybe we should check it out and see if we can figure out who these people are, and why that creep wanted them poisoned. We should probably hurry, because he might have found another guy to do the job, and those people could be in danger."

In answer to Bliss' question, Pressi chooses to give Harper 20 of the shield, laying out her current strategy. (In a nutshell, she's thinking that she may be using Harper to deliver cure spells during a battle.)

Harper falls rather easily into the mother cat role, playing with Bliss and purring away.

(In answer to whether I want to do more rituals, not at this time. But I'll probably be pumping points into heal at L10 so I can boost my cure spells.)

Pressi frowns, easily knowing that something is up with Hobie. Yet her holy symbol remains silent.

It isn't until Kezzem speaks up that she understands the Truth Test weakness. The lie detection won't work in cases where the speaker is merely hiding something because the speaker hasn't told a lie.

She does laugh at Kezzem's statement until she realizes he's serious. "I think the honest question is: will he continue to hide it while never shutting up about it? That's what you have to worry about.

"Anyhoo, that is of some concern - and clearly where to head next. Too bad we haven't visited there before or else we could give it a quick look now. Ce la vie. So, shall we get going?"

Changes
As people have been talking, Murphy has been handing out some food - not the nicely prepared food that Lance hankers for, and he himself would not mind, but rather rations designed for travel and efficiency. After Kezzem offers his suspicions of Hobie, he calls Hobie over to join with the others, and welcomes Roscoe as well.

"It's been hard not to notice several transformations among members of this group," Murphy says. "I know that I change shape more often than I change my... socks. But that's what some druids do.

"Kezzem, after your death among the giants, and revival with Lord Gargul - you went from rascal to paladin - a huge change. Bless your heart, you seriously rethought some of your life choices, and came down on the side of righteousness and wisdom. Frankly, I was astonished, in awe of what happened to you.

"Lance - a quick-footed monk, and now, as of yesterday a full-fledged sorcerer. Who could have anticipated that? I look forward to the further unveiling of your capabilities. By the way, you can get a good breakfasts at the Belly Buster. Better yet, Alouryn at our place has been becoming a very good cook, and it's hard to beat my mother's breakfasts. Not much time this afternoon for any of that.

"Pressi, you have gone through discernible changes now twice that I can see. This latest one may take you - and me - a while to process. I look forward to discovering what I can about the 'New Pressi,'" he says, with warmth, handled lightly. He holds out his hand for Harper to sniff at, and, if the leopard will allow, scratches her head a bit. "And your cat!"

"And now, you, too, Bliss. Not sure what happened to you, or how it happened. But somehow Pressi seems to have played a role, whether she understands it or not, in your new feline nature. Mayhaps you can explain that to her." With a wry smile, he adds, "And, yes, I think that 'Lady Queen' sits her well."

Taking a more serious mien, he goes on. "Lord Eberyon some years back appeared before my siblings and cousins near the birthing tree in the Culverwood. He told a story of how, during the second creation, the Jericko, having considered the fey, created several different folk - elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, thought that there were advantages and shortcomings among each of them.

"Here is how part of the story goes from Eberyon's own lips as his spoke with my relatives," and Murphy recites by memory:
After the creator finished his journey, he pondered about creating another race that had all the positive aspects of all his other races. A group he could be content with ... a race that pleased him completely. So the creator began his journey again and visited the fey in the forests. He seized a sprite and bound her with magic. The creator then revisited each race again and took from them a portion of what they were. From the elves he took agility and grace. He added it to the fey and it grew. From the dwarves he took devotion to family and added it to the sprite and she began to grow and change. Boldness and fearlessness he took from the orcs, and the fey grew even larger. The creator visited the humans once again and took from them the spark of creativity and the ability to adapt. After all these thing are collected, the creator added them to the fey, and the hobbit was born. A tall, strong, formidable creature that knew no fear. Who had bold ambitions and the creativity to do what they would.

The creator stood back and admired his craftsmanship. So very pleased he was. And great favor he bestowed on his beloved hobbits. The other races grew jealous and fearful of such a race and made war against them. The creator, in his ultimate wisdom, sought to halt the hostility by making his beloved hobbits smaller in size to lessen the threat they imposed on others. This made the hobbits more elusive to their enemies. It taught them to hide and use the shadows for cover. He gave them patience and cunning. Peace was soon restored, and the creator was satisfied. After deciding that his work was complete, the Jericko stepped away from the Wold and rested.
"From Eberyon's story, we see that our race has virtues from many races - and that our race has gone through changes. Now, among us - we see individual changes.

"I welcome those changes. I do not fear them. I sense that many powers of the Wold are showing us favor as evidenced by the skills we are acquiring. At the same time, others are showing their fear of what we are becoming, so seek to oppose us, to try to eliminate us.

"Let us show grace and kindness to each other, and support one another as best as each of us might. We are together to defend Humble's Ford, and Crescent Valley. We are here to grow in power to serve others. Let's figure out this latest threat, take on the forces whom Uthvas Bethud has been gathering, and send his soul off to judgment.

"Hobie, thanks for coming with us to help - and for the information you brought us. Let's see how things go."

Can you, uh, shop for us, Constable?
"Constable Roscoe - I think we need to make haste to the old communal building. Would you do us the kindness of taking Kezzem's funds, and the voucher you have provided, to Pirnook's store, and, through his link to the Catacombs, purchase two wands of cure light wounds? After we deal with whatever there is to deal with at the communal building, one of us can swing by and get those from you, then head on to the next threat. As it seems time may be of the essence, we will go, now, to the communal house. Can you do us this favor?"

Off to the Communal Building
"Lance, we've been to the tower, twice, shortly before dawn. The two good members of the Second Dinner Club now have most of have Garron's books. Do we need to go there a third time? The old cemetery up north, and the flower field to the west are the two other places besides the communal building to the east on the map we obtained. And, with what Hobie has provided us, I think it's time to go to the communal building. Unless you just want to chat with Tiana and Veseley," Murphy teases.

Sense motive: 14 - yes, Murphy sensed Hobie's reluctance to dwell on some things past.

"When you can turn yourself into something that doesn't talk so much, then we'll be really impressed," jests Kezzem.

Murphy laughs at Kezzem's jest. "Perhaps some day a taciturn spirit will overcome me."

"Sky, you've been awfully quiet this afternoon. Any thoughts to add to the group as we set to go?" Murphy asks the ranger.

Roscoe shakes his head no.

"The vouchers as far as I'll go bud. I want no part of touching magic."

The general consensus among the party seems to be following the lead of their newest affiliate, Hobie. They know its about a 20 minute ride, mounted, so they probably wouldn't waste their short term magic.

Having gone to sleep around 5 am, and resting their full 8 hours, it's full blown afternoon right now.

How does the party approach? Do they send a scout? Plans to fly-by the commune had been mentioned before.

"Look, I'll pop into Pirnook's store, and buy from the Catacombs there. After I've got the wands, I'll shapechange and fly out, catching up to you as soon as I can. If I get to you before you get to the destination, I can try a fly-by. Pressi, you said you might join me? Anyone else?"

He thinks of what happened out at the farm. "So, we saw that some of those who esteem us were turned against us by a necromancer. I pray that not happen again. But let's be prepared for whatever may come - and keep in mind we have three places to visit today." He waits for a moment to take in what others may say, then heads to the General Store.

First things first, Pressi mentions that she'd like to get the group in message spell range before they even consider a flyby.

If that's the plan, she prepares to use beast shape 1 as they get closer, to form that of a small bird. She plans though to stay out of lines of sight as much as possible, remaining stealthy.

Lance will likewise approach on foot, then cast fly as they get closer. He moves along at the same elevation as Pressi and Murphy, but keeps some distance to increase visual coverage.

Hobie thinks the flyby is a good idea, but first he would like to sneak himself into a position where he can view the house, within his bow's range, in case something were to go wrong.

Having cast his Barkskin, Bliss sneaks all fast and catlike toward the fungus-house, rolling his Stealth at -5 to use his full move of 50. As a tiny housecat, he slinks through the underbrush, using nearby foliage as concealment. He looks around for animated mushroom-men or brachiating bracket-fungi.
