Beordir's low light vision helps, but not by much. He can make out the figure and Mack moving beside him as they creep up on the thing. Beordir waits for Mack to be in a helpful position. He gestures with his left hand for Mack to look the thing over, while Beordir waits to stab should it make any threatening moves.

Mack, Squeaver and Beordir advance on the large heap on the ground. Beordir can't quite make it out, but Mack can now see it to be the body of a xorn. It isn't moving and looks to have taken a beating. It has its back to the trio.

Things are very quiet below ground.

Above ground, there is tension. What is going on down there? Pacing, growls, mumbles. Everyone is thinking about it.

Armand continues his incantations. There isn't much else he can do right now.

I move in to end its suffering, signaling my intention to Beordir if possible in the dark.

"Looks like that Earth Elemental did quite a number on him!" "We better let the others know what's going on before we explore any more."

I cast my Light spell, and switch my goggles back to normal. If it appears somewhat safe down here, I yell up to whoever is close and can hear, to tell them what we found. Hopefully no longer need be worried about that missing xorn popping up when we least expect him.

Atlas shrugs when he hears Mack call up. He would make some joke back to him, but he would have to yell and he doesn't want to disturb Armand.

The closer they get to talking to Gaston the more excited Atlas starts to become. The thought of some big secret organization pulling all the strings is enticing. It isn't the same as a good dungeon crawl or rooting out some drow from an abandoned temple, but it could be fun to take down the heart of evil in this area.

However, he still feels a sense of longing for the Tree. They have been gone a while, it would be nice to know that everything is OK.

Once Mack acknowledges that whatever it is died, Beordir heaves a sigh of relief and relaxes a bit. "Hmmmmmm. I don't recall an Earth Elemental appearing in the fight above. Are you sure we're responsible for this thing's demise?"

Once the light spell activates, Beordir takes a good look around wondering where this tunnel goes and how it got created. It's purpose of breaking into the prison seems obvious.

DM RobC - "What has that halfling curiosity gotten him into now"
Monday October 2nd, 2017 6:58:44 AM

OOC: Folks, I'm going to push things along here. The party - and especially Armand - have been very patient. Let's get to the good stuff!

Mack, Beordir and Squeaver are in agreement that the xorn was likely killed by the earth elemental that the party summoned. Despite the tunnel continuing on with no end in sight, they determine it is something better tackled with the entire party. They head back out of the tunnel (with Squeaver climbing up much better than climbing down).

They pass the guards as they leave the troll cellblock and move to the one where the party fought the xorn, the red giants, and where Gaston currently lies before Armand.

Armand finishes his incantation and then follows up with two more spells: Zone of Truth and Comprehend Languages. He seems to have thought of everything.

Finally, the first question can be asked: "What do you know of those that engineered your death, those known as The Consortium?"

It takes a moment, but slowly Gaston's mouth starts to move as his voice comes as a faint whisper

"What.. is.. in.. a.. name? Walls.. cannot.. stop.. knowledge. With.. ear.. to.. stone.. I.. still.. could.. see.. Gargul.. comes.. for.. all.. What.. is.. in.. a.. name?"

Having climbed back up to the rest of the group, Beordir waits patiently for Gaston to be questioned. Unfortunately, his words are deceptive.

DM RobC - "What has that halfling curiosity gotten him into now"
Tuesday October 3rd, 2017 8:35:09 AM

Mack takes up a position by the doorway. He'd rather take his chances with some living foe than the dead-ish one that Armand is speaking with.

Atlas is just angered by the response. It seems even in death Gaston proves elusive.

Beordir, Talya, Neshi and Osul each try to interpret his words but none can come up with a definitive answer.

Elyngael feels a little creeped out by the whole situation.

Armand contemplates Gaston's words. Though the responses are cryptic, he doesn't believe Gaston to be speaking lies - simply speaking in riddles. He tries with another question: "How do we find the entities that make up the Consortium?"

"What.. is.. in.. a.. name? You.. can.. see.. a.. hive.. but.. that.. does.. not.. mean.. you.. know.. the.. bees. What.. is.. in.. a.. name?"

DM RobC - "I'm not seeing it..."
Wednesday October 4th, 2017 7:49:28 AM

Elyngael wonders whether the Consortium may be some sort of insect race, but Osul isn't sure. Perhaps some food and drink will help?

Talya deduces that Gaston was trying to say what the party already know: the members are hidden away.

Atlas is sure someone smarter than he will be able to work out these riddles. He then considers that perhaps asking more direct questions to Gaston will get more direct answers.

Armand agrees with this logic, and asks Gaston outright: "What was the information you were going to give us for that exchange?"

Gaston's voice continues as a whisper "Billowing.. breath.. from.. the.. underearth.. spreads. The.. blood.. of.. the.. people.. spills. The.. living.. fall"

His eyelids flickers open revealing pale eyes. He looks directly at Armand as his voice turns into a scream "DEATH! DEATH IS COMING TO THE CITY!"

Gaston's eyes close and his mouth closes.

Neshi wonders at the structure of the consortium. Could there be one or many members who control it?

Beordir has always been in tune with nature, but his real comfort zone is on those things above ground. He doesn't have all that much knowledge about the things under the earth.

Talya once again has some very good thoughts on things (I think we have our puzzle solver!). Dragon's breath, poison gas, and all manner of other things could be what Gaston's corpse fortells. But what is under the city?

Atlas tries to make sense of everything. He questions whether it would be worth speaking with this Olander person. He may know more than Gaston. He may even be the source of Gaston's information.

Mack pipes up noting that he was ready to start exploring the tunnels 10minutes ago

Armand closes his conversation with Gaston and Gargul, declaring Gaston to be guilty of all crimes and worthy of Gargul's punishment. But only Gargul will know of Gaston's early life. Perhaps he ran an orphange, or worked as a priest of Flower? Whatever his past, Gargul will determine his future. Either way, Armand has gone dangerously close to providing religious interference - something the officer advised was not permitted.

Osul wonders whether Armand could recall the spell to try on Olander here and now. The question is asked aloud, and you notice the officer look about the party.

Neshi tries to sweet-talk the senior officer, but he is having none of it. "I thought I was quite clear earlier. The body stays here. 'Borrowing' a body is not something that happens here. We are responsible for observing the death rituals our prisoners request, we make sure their bodies aren't desecrated, and we make sure that they aren't raised from the dead as a means to escape this prison" The officer crosses his arms.

Neshi words and the healing provided to his guards earlier seem to have kept the officer on-side for now.

Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the feeling that a senior officer isn't used to having to repeat, nor justify his actions. That and having had his prison attacked - and having to deliver the news of the deaths to loved ones - likely have put him on the defensive}

Sense Motive 15 (d20+12)

Armand considers what 'Osul said. "Perhaps, but I don't think recalling the spell is going to prove that worthwhile."

He turns to the guard OOC is this someone of rank or just a guard type that was watching over us?
"Sir, we've done what we can here. As you probably overheard, the spell does not always produce tangible results. We are left with riddles and veiled comments." Armand shrugs.
Diplomacy 19 (d20+10)
"Should your Warden like us to investigate the tunnel which some one has caused to be formed into your prison tell him that we would be happy to look into the matter. We are staying at..." OOC Robert does not remember the name of the Inn and being at school for parent teacher comments until 7 means I can't really look it up, I'm sure Armand remembers where the party is staying.

"Oh, and if he would like us to question any other prisoners, some of our party seem to think that Orlando fellow may have some information about who tried to tunnel in, maybe even an escape attempt was involved, you can likewise reach us at the inn."

”I would be dead a few times over if it wasn’t for the magic and prayers of my friends, so I am good with the plan of exploring in the morning. Now that we don’t have any other plans for the evening, I suggest we get that dinner and some drinks. I really hope there is some entertainment at the inn, we could use the distraction.”. "Plans for the evening?!"
'Osul considers the morning so far since breakfast: travel from the inn to here, get through vetting, brief chat with Gaston, combat, meet our new friends, and 15 minutes getting ready to and speaking with Gaston again - for one last time.
"We might have missed second breakfast (if you believe in such a thing), but it cannot be lunchtime yet. But, yes, we need to better understand what he said."

DM RobC - "Plans for the evening?!"

Mack heads over to keep a better eye on the hole. He can practically hear it calling to him "Jump! JUMP! Noone will know. Go on." It doesn't actually call him of course.

Armand explains the spell to the guards and with everything done, advises them of where the group are staying - whatever the name of the place is!

Neshi doesn't seem too disheartened by the response from the guard.

Talya starts to put a plan together: rest up and then hit the tunnels with everything they've got.

Beordir and Elyngael nod in agreement. Elyngael even goes so far as to wonder whether other tunnels may exist.

Atlas apolgozies to the officer for any imposition the party may have caused. Sensing some empathy from the party, the officer has a chance to pause. His shoulders look less tense and the muscles in his face and neck relax. "It has been a long day for everyone. As you said, the hardest part will likely still come"

Osul tries to put the days activities in order. Sure the party have been busy, but it can't possibly be dinner time already, could it? It couldn't even be lunchtime!

True, it is approaching noon - far from the closing of the day. The party has a chance to do what they wish, keeping in mind their diminished spells and abilities.

The party decide to go about other tasks and regroup back at the inn.

Armand says a prayer for the guards and then drops in on the Sage's Guild. They confirm that 'of course there are sewers in Plateau City', and 'it wouldn't surprise if there are tunnels under the City'.

Atlas is happy for lunch and a break. He even suggests sending Mack further down the tunnel.

Mack's eyes light up - one eye in regards to lunch, the other in regards to the tunnel.

Elyngael heads to the WLA for some training. The staff at the WLA seem midly alarmed about the attack at the prison. "You are going to investigate further, aren't you?"

Beordir turns to the market to take care of supplies.

Talya heads to the Star Mages Guild to try and find something in regards to the 'underearth'. There is nothing specific, but being built literally atop a plateau there is ample space for many tunnels.

Neshi isn't quite sure what to do. Can they follow along with the rest of the party?

Osul extends the invitation for the newcomers to travel with them and Mack is one again pleased. He already has two eyes lit up and lets leave it at that.

OOC... Now... where were we?

Mack, Beordir and Osul work together to identify the gems. There are a number of precious and rare stones. The rubies in particular are huge! Between all the gems - including the ones from the Xorn down the hole - the trio suspect the pile to be worth around 27,000

The necklace the was recovered (DM Post Sept 13th) is also identified as a Necklace of Adaptation.

Atlas gives Neshi and Talya a warm welcome.

After a quick snack on some meats pasties, Beordir sets to some shopping. He finds everything he needs in the Catacombs.

Armand asks about copies of the maps to the sewers. He asks about the tunnel that breached the prison, to which he is told yes - there are sewers underneath the prison. But when Armand looks over the maps, the sewers are not that deep, nor do they run through the middle of the cell blocks.

To Elyngael's question, the WLA rep shakes his head. "No, no reports of any trouble at all. It may have been a jail break gone wrong? It certainly raises suspicion though."

Neshi agrees to catch up with the party after lunch at the tavern. First he has a few other taverns to visit. Despite his efforts he doesn't find a single person that has heard or knows of Olander. Not a single one.

In terms of blights and diseases Neshi gets a few solemn head nods. There are reports of a number of small outbreaks all about the peninsula. They don't sound concentrated or restricted to any one area.

Talya isn't happy by the response she gets in the Star Mages Guild. The snobby wizards there aren't typically the sewer/tunnel dwelling type. Want to learn a spell? They can help. Want to study the origins of magic? That's the place to be. But venturing into the sewers isn't really their thing.

Mack is keen to get back to the tunnels but it looks like he has enough time to venture to the druid's area first.

Neshi is suspicious that noone has heard of Olander. Then again in a town of thousands does everyone know everyone? Despite her expectations, for a name would be heard throughout the entire city would be quite incredible. Why, even the party have to introduce themselves wherever they go.

He heads to the WLA to signup, get some training and ask about diseases and blights in nearby areas. "Yes, we are aware of such things. We're only aware of four at the moment. One by Aisildur, one by Osto, another bordering the Scab, and another just east of the Shadow Mountain" (If relevant: map)

Armand contemplates the maps. He skips lunch to instead start copying them. The last thing you want is to be lost underground. Best be prepared and take some maps along.

Beordir makes a few small purchases and - with a light drink and dinner - heads back to the room to get a little study in.

After catching up with the others Elyngael and Kahn are more than ready to call it a day.

The party meet back at the tavern, and after an uneventful night, wake refreshed

Atlas hears the clink of gold as Mack returns with the spoils. He scoops up his share, "I'll be right back." You hear him mumble something about the catacombs and the sewers and leaving, but is hard to hear him as he stuffs a few more bites of food into his mouth. One thing does finally come through clear though, "I'll meet you at the prison in an hour.". He's then off, half his plates uneaten.

However, a moment later he returns with a sheepish look. He takes a piece of bread from his unfinished breakfast, piles on a few sausage and some eggs, stuffs a muffin in his mouth, and turns to go again. He tries to run at first, but when you see a sausage hit the floor and hear a loud animalistic noise come from his completely stuffed mouth you notice that he slows to a fast walk.

Beordir gets up that morning well rested, with a clear mind. He begins his morning stretches as usual, but instead of focusing on physical training, he spends time with perception. Taking a few small bits of food from the kitchen downstairs, he sits at a table in the common room.

Beordir takes each piece of food and looks at it carefully, smells it thoroughly before putting it in his mouth. He savors the initial taste before starting to chew it. He chews each small piece thoroughly, tasting it intensely before rinsing his mouth with water and moving onto the next one.

Having finished his mediations, he eats a small meal and retires back upstairs to study the spells useful in a tunnel. Once that's complete, Beordir packs his gear and heads back downstairs. He grabs a second small meal and munches on it as everyone gathers.

'Osul returns from his wanderings to the inn deep in thought.

He works his way through dinner slowly. More like he remembers every few minutes to take another bite or drink to punctuate his thoughts, rather than savouring each mouthful.
Eventually, he realises that he is no longer eating at all, and with a nod and a smile to those still at table, bids them a good evening.

Sleep, when it comes, is dreams heavily coloured in the darkness of the old under chambers of the drow.

Dawn breaks slowly, as from where his mind is to meditation is not far at all. Soon enough he is joining the other wardens for breakfast, and wondering what news is doing the rounds of the inn this morning.

DM RobC - "Should I take it to the Catacombs?"
Friday October 13th, 2017 7:28:21 PM

Osul waits very patiently (Responding to your email now. Please feel free to share with the party if you choose)

Atlas is in a hurry to spend the hard won gold. There are only so many pieces of food he can carry with him while he runs off.

Elyngael seems timed and a little dejected. It's like she has parts of a jigsaw puzzle but with no edge pieces to start with.

Neshi settles down for a heavy meal. I suppose you never know if one will be your last?

Beordir eats in a similar way, savouring each piece of food and its unique flavor.

Osul also takes his time - not to enjoy the food but to work through his thoughts. Things are happening to him. He can feel it.

Talya wakes as most people do - grumpy. She prepares her spells and equipment and is ready to explore these caves everyone keeps talking about.

Mack and Squeaver sit down and try to relax. What will the future hold for them?

"So I did a bit of checking around yesterday on a slightly different track and may have found a couple more areas where the consortium may be active. If it is them they are operating over a much wider area than I expected, Osto, Ailsidur, the Scab, and east of Shadow Mountain." That very easily could make Shadow Mountain their center of operations.'

But that is just my supposition ...

Through an old sewer access, the party enters the Tunnels. The architecture is much different than what you would guess a sewers would be. while no one is an engineer or even an architecture aficionado, it's hard to imagine a civil engineer specifying carved gargoyles, frescos, stone carvings of vines and other decorations. These things adorn these halls, now coated green with algae and other "stuff" due to years of being used as a sewer. the one concession to becoming a sewer rather than what it originally was is the trench carved down the middle of the hall, keeping the waste well contained. Unless you miss step you should not have to wade in human waste...or swim if you are a halfling.

It's dark down here, except for the light from the entrance above it's dark as a tomb. I'm going to need what light source you are using. as well as your marching order.

"Martial prowess wise, I can be fairly defensive, but I'm not a great tank because I usually can't prevent someone from moving past me."

When Mack suggests a spell for light, he adds, "You do not need light, so it would be best for your spell to be cast on someone else. When your spell runs out, I can also enchant illumination. Mine should last a good while, 4 or 5 hours."

Otherwise I'm going with that after a full nights rest the party stands currently at the entrance to the sewers beneath the prison.

The party spends some time getting ready, Elyngael wasn't even out of bed for Wardd's sake! once she arrives the pary sorts themselves out and prepares to head out.

Shortly after entering the tunnels you can see where fresh work has been done to one of the walls, linking the tunnels with the city sewer system, rough work, the debris is still piled to the sides of the main channel.

‘Osul: buffs the party and helps Mack out, you see the thing that Mack and Atlas see as well. (See Atlas above for DC to identify) The debris is just debris.

Talya reminds everyone to look for tracks and contemplates the myriad ways that things could hide in the maze of tunnels.

Armand: casts light on Atlas shield spike. According to your map, through that carved out piece of wall you should be getting close to where you fought the Xorn earlier...at least if they were a few stories higher up.

Yurr'Neshi makes a plan with Atlas to give him StoneSkin before combat starts. with Keen eyes and fierce intellect, he deduces that the rubble pile is just a rubble pile.

Boerdir bringing up the rear, pretty much is blocked as far as perception is concerned. he words though seems to bolster the resolve and focus of the party.

The party enters the tunnels, and look around it's quiet, but something hovers just out of hearing range, you cannot define it or even really tell if it is really there, but there is something.

As the party moves down the tunnel a voice can be heard.

All detonators set. Timers activated. Infiltration forces have not returned. Awaiting instructions” This voice sounds..mechanical.

A raspy voice can then be heard responding

Boerdir checks the roof of the sewer tunnel: cut stone covered in moss, it looks solid.

Armand: looking at the thing, something tickles in the back of your mind, it looks to be a construct of some sort, but not like a house or a wagon, a magical construct, a golem of some sort, but the type eludes you.

Elyngael steps around the corner and nails it with her Adamantine arrow, the shaft sinks deeply into the creature

Talya prepares to give the lumbering beast a slippery surprise should it take exception to the arrow.

Mack: steps in front of Elyngael to screen the archer from attack.

Atlas: is surprised that someone besides himself is a Warhawk, He rushes forward and swings, the blade hits, maybe not as solidly as he would have liked, but the damage is even less than what he would have thought. (Damage reduced to 3 points)

‘Osul: thinks of plan to bury the barrel,

Yurr'Neshi Pulls a wand and fumbles the spell, He concentrates and gets it the second time. (were you casting that True Strike on yourself or Elyngael? )

Atlas: goes after the thing with a vengance. he does some damage but the thing still seems much tougher than it should be. (total damage reduced to 10 points. )

Talya's acid arrow flies true and wounds the beast, the acid at least seems to bypass the things toughness. your experience with magic gives you some insight into what this thing may be Highlight to display spoiler: {it is a Necromantic golem http://www.dxcontent.com/MDB_MonsterBlock.asp?MDBID=2509 }

Mack: (squeever was safe from the blast.) climbing the wall is a tricky feat, the moss, and excrement coming out of the 6" clay lines make the going tricky. you fail to make any progress. Squeever rushes out and attempts to gnaw the thing's ankles off. His teeth and claws fail to get any purchase on it though even though he hit it solid. (Damage reduced to 0)

Boerdir the shaft flies true trailing teal light, it strikes the brute and amazingly bounces off! (damage resistance reduces damage to 0)

Yurr'Neshicast his javelin, pocking the thing slightly, but it flenches away from the blow and the power of the charge grounds out to the floor instead of it's body.

Armand: channels the power of his god! dispelling, at least partially, the coldness of the negative energy.

Elyngael Tags it rightly with her first arrow, but in her rush to get the second one on it she misses with it. The adamantine arrows seem to work exceptionally well against the thing. (to hit AC 19 is insufficient to hit this beast)

‘Osul: continues to contimplate his spell.

Atlas growls, frustrated that he is not doing more. He lashes out again at the creature, first slashing with his sword, peeling some of the creatures animated skin off. He takes the opportunity to push forward with his shield and scores another hit, the light from the spike going out just briefly as it sinks into the creature. Unfortunately the creature moved during that dark moment and Atlas' final swing of his sword misses completely.

"It's a necromantic golem! You'll need adamantium to pierce its protection, and its innate spell resistance will shrug off most magic we toss at it. Positive energy disrupts its movement, so Armand should be able to use a healing spell on it. If we give it enough time it'll unleash another negative energy blast, so let's move quickly!

Talyah then launches another missile of acid, hoping to stack on the acid damage which seems to be working on the Golem.

(OOC: Talyah uses her move action to explain the abilities and weaknesses of the Golem, then standard action to use Acid Dart (as her wizard Sp ability), Ranged Touch attack d20+7=9. Also the Acid arrow from last round will deal another round of damage, for 2d4=7 acid damage)

‘Osul: decides on a spell and begins his chant. (the debris was at the place where they bored into the tunnels under the prison, there is refuse, excrement, moss, flotsam and jetsam here but no earthworks. )

Mack: and squeever tear into the thing, your flame and squeevers cold do a bit of damage to the creature, but the physical blows don't seem to phase it. (damage reduced to 10 for all attacks combined)

Atlas: keeps hacking at it. thus does water wear away mountains, and scores two hits, but the blade acts as if it's hitting something that's not quite stone, but also way tougher than flesh. the shield spike does not disappear, but it does dim by about half with the strike. (damage reduced to 7 for all attacks combined. )

Talya correctly identifies the rare Necromantic Golem and calls warning to her comrades. she then lets loose with another Acid arrow and hits yet again!

Yurr'Neshi Thinks outside the box and casts Ice storm, perhaps he should have taken the 20' radius into account before he did.

Boerdir thrusts hard into the Golem, but instead of running your blade completely through the monster it only goes in a couple of inches. (Damage reduced to 3 points. )

Armand: Wisely casts a spell to negate one of the golems major powers. he then corrects Elyngael's level drain. (Good shot Armand, that earns you a Hero point. )

Elyngael tenses as the negative energy engulfs her, and somehow is able to keep it from getting too deep into her. no sooner has she taken the drain, till Armand warms her back up with the healing restoration of his god. Bolstered she sends two armor piercing Adamantine arrow into the Constructed horror.

There is a howl of winter wind and huge hailstones pound everyone and everything in the room for 15 points of damage. The entire area is coated in ice and the water in the channel and pouring out of the drains begins to get rime ice where it lies static. the floor is now considered Difficult terrain. each horizontal or vertical square counts as 2 squares, diagonal squares count as 3 squares.

between all the damage that Elyngael, Atlas, Talya, Mack, Squeever and Boerdir have done the force of "Neshi's hale storm finally overwhelms the construct, it's head drops, it's legs buckle and it slowly collapses into a kneeling position, then falls backward into the muck.

Whats also interesting is that there seemed to be a mechanism on top of one of the barrels. The hale stones smashed it, the clockwork looks to have had 6 minutes left on its countdown before it was destroyed.

Whats even more interesting is that one of the barrel tops was cracked by a hale stone and an orange mist is rising from the breached top.

DM note: Plateau City is HUGE. the sewer system is HUGE. do you really think that searching the entire sewer system by yourselves is the best course of action??

although none of you have come nowhere near the orange vapors, the smell of them permeates the air. even dilute the smell is enough to churn your stomach and make your nose burn. it smells poisonous.

as the vapors reach the body of the Golem you are glad you didn't get in them. they begin to eat the organic components off of the corpse. it looks like a lot of gold and gems were used in its construction because as the gas strips flesh away and you see gold color and sparkles reflected by your torch lights.

Armand studies the vapors, he has detect magic up. "hmm, the vapors seem to dissolve the flesh. Not good sounding." What do the vapors do to the stone floor/metal pipes etc. What about the barrel, what was it made up of... if wood, then how does the vapor affect wood?
