The Hurricane

DM Kathy

Jozhur and Terser manage to get one of the sails reefed, with some help from Zeoll. Tahni tries to help, too, but mostly hinders. The crew has just about finished reefing the mainsail.

Rill calls to Bralin to simply cut the rigging. The dwarf is moving to obey when little Horace, clinging to one edge of the sail, is suddenly flung outward by a huge gust of wind. He loses his grip and hurtles, screaming, off the ship and toward the raging sea.

"Man overboard!" bellows Tommy Teeth, but there's little the crew can do for their little goblin crewmate. From his position, Bralin can see where the goblin fell, and if he acts quickly, he can save him.

Meanwhile, there's still one sail to reef, and the waves are washing up onto the deck. Lashing rain makes visibility poor. "We may have to ride this one out belowdecks," Tula calls. "It's getting dangerous out here."

If he sees Horace in midair, Zeoll quickly casts Feather Fall on him. He's not sure that will help, but he tries anyway!

Rill monitors the situation with Horace. He assumes Bralin will rescue the little guy, but if he does not, Rill can use Dimensional Hop to get to him, and Dimension Door to get us back on board.

He yells over the gale, "Good Thinking Tula! Get everyone below decks. Jozhur - do we need someone at the helm? If so, I can stay with up here with you, and we can tie ourselves in!"

Tahni grows more and more impressed by Rill's ability to teleport around the place. That is a very handy skill to have.

There's not a lof she can do though. Her attempts with the ropes just cause more work for the others. "There's never a control weather spell around when you need one" she laments.

She isn't going to go below decks though until everyone heads that way. Instead, Tahni casts a dancing lights spell to highlight where the entrance is to get below deck. In this kind of storm it would be easy for someone to get lost.

Seeing the goblin thrown from the ship, Bralin immediately flies after him.

With luck, and a feather fall spell, the dwarf can reach him before he hits the water.
If not, Bralin hovers in place, relying on his darkvision to help pick out the fella.

Either way, once found, Bralin locks onto Horace with a vise-like grip, and hauls him back to the ship.

As Horace the goblin crewman goes flying off the ship, Zeoll manages to cast Feather Fall on him. That gives Bralin enough time to swoop down and catch him. Bralin does notice, however, that flying is becoming very difficult in all this wind.

In the meantime, Jozhur helps get the last sail reefed, and Rill endorses Tula's suggestion of getting everyone below. Certainly Horace is headed straight for the hatch!

Tahni tries to figure out where the winds are blowing the ship, but it's difficult to be sure. You think you initially were heading westward from Market Island, but you've tossed about quite a bit since then. You try to assess whether the storm is natural. You're pretty sure that the way it came up was not natural at all. Thirty minutes ago--possibly less!--you were staring up into a brilliant blue sky. This is not how storms happen. Now that it's here, though, it seems to be behaving like a normal storm, albeit a bad one. If some malevolent intelligence did conjure up this storm, he or she isn't micro-managing it. Or perhaps it wasn't even intended for the Lionfish.

"All hands below!" Tula calls. "It's too rough up here!" She doesn't have to tell the crew twice; they begin scrambling to get belowdecks.

With the sails reefed, it's going to be much more difficult for the wind to drive the Lionfish willy-nilly all over the Middle Seas. That's the good news. The bad news is that with very little sail, it's going to be difficult to steer the ship. It's also difficult to see where you're going. Tula is pulling hard on the helm, but it's difficult to see whether it's having any effect at all.

So, do you go below with the crew? Stay up here and try to guide the Lionfish? Something else?

With nothing more to do on the sails, Terser joins Tula at the helm, ready to assist as she needs. Once nothing more can be accomplished, he will help her down to the hold to ride it out with the crew.

It's right about this point where Tahni can feel her stomach start to lurch. Dwarves were not meant for the sea. Not the normal ones anyway.

Doing her best to hold onto breakfast she stands right in the hatch/doorway to go below deck. Being below would mean shelter and warmth. Being above means fresh air and cool water on her face.

That Horace fellow looks a little worse for wear. His face is all ... holy Mother Maab he's a goblin! That kindof explains the smell.

Tahni heads below deck to find a blanket to cover Horace with and then casts Prestidigitation to warm it up.

Reggie gets Ty situated as safe as possible (probably in a hammock) she then makes her way back topside, making sure as many as possible get below safely.

Reggie then makes her way to the wheel looking to lash the wheel to prevent it from spinning and driving the ship all different directions.

Rill casts a sharp eye around the deck to make sure all are accounted for, and then goes below - keeping a mental count to make sure those that follow him below account for all the party and crew.

He glances nervously around at the inside of the hull as the ship is tossed in the storm. He hopes the ship will hold together. He absently returns his robes to their clean, dry, pressed state as he holds onto a nearby bulkhead.

"Looks like we're in for a rough ride, but the Lionfish has proven to be a good vessel. I'm sure she'll weather this storm. Keep an eye out for leaks, and we'll see what we can do to mend them. And if there is real trouble, I have a backup plan. Tula and I both have an item that can create a rescue boat, and I can make a number of you able to walk on the waves. One way or another, we'll be fine."

Geez, I hope we gonna be fine.

Bralin's first thought is his strength could assist at the wheel, but as Terser and Zeoll move in that direction, he decides against it.

Instead, the dwarf heads below. His darkvision and healing skills may prove valuable if the crew gets tossed about.

When the crew goes below, Rill, Bralin and Tahni go with them. Rill makes a reassuring speech to the crew, which does seem to help. Tahni warms a blanket for Horace; and her Prestidigitation spell will also come in handy for helping to dry soaking clothes. Bralin sees any number of cuts and scrapes that could use some attention, and Sammy is cradling his right arm to his body in a way that suggests a more serious injury.

As the crew comes below, Reggie begins making her way up. You were able to leave Ky in a hammock, and now the crew can help watch them.

Reggie joins Zeoll and Terser topside. You begin tying down the helm to keep it from whirling out of control--though it's difficult to tell which direction you should be pointed. The rain and wind continue to lash at the Lionfish, and the waves are like mountains. A sudden flash of lightning lights the sky, with the boom of the thunder following close behind.

Belowdecks, Bralin is all set to help the crew with his healing kit when Rill just channels positive energy and heals everybody. Showoff.

Ky is still crying, and since Reggie went topside, he is wailing for his Mommie.

On deck, Zeoll,, Jozhur, Terser, and Tula work together to try to keep the Lionfish upright and intact. The task is not an easy one. Hours seem to go by as you battle the elements.

Then, without warning, everyone on the ship hears a sickening CRUNCH!. The Lionfish shudders, then stops dead. You have run aground--and the storm still rages.

Rill shrugs at Bralin's disappointment. "Sorry pal. It's what I do."

Rill is not a big fan crying children. A vessel like the Lionfish is no place for children anyway. He begins to make his way up when the ship shudders. "Ugh. Four people steering the ship and they found something to crash into? Tula - perhaps you can have Cato and Horace check for leaks or damage. I better go find out what happened."

Rill goes up on deck to see what we crashed into. Any land in sight? His Status spell didn't indicate anyone was hurt. He tries to yell over the gale, "HEY. YOU GUYS OK?"

Various creative vulgarities fly from Jozhur's tongue when he realizes they had run aground. He calms down when he realizes they may be better off beached given the current sea conditions.

Jozhur glances over the others and shouts back to Rill, letting him know everyone is okay. "We need to check for damage, this storm is so strong it may wash us back out."

He takes a look down. Are they actually beached or merely in shallow water? How aground is the 'Fish? Would it be possible to wash back out?
