DM MikeK - Portents
Tuesday October 31st, 2017 8:57:29 PM

Sid picks up a couple of interesting looking volumes. He and the rest of the Shields head back for Shield HQ.

It’s getting late as the group descends to the Fence Level, and a noticeable chill has descended as well. The Shield’s breath is visible in the night. It’s dark. It’s too dark.
The Float’s “sky”, which has always echoed the real thing, is pitch black. The odd lamp or Everburning Torch battle the darkness, but the light struggles to penetrate.

Arriving at Shield HQ, everyone sees several dozen people are gathered at the end of the alleyway, which looks out from the city. Many are pointing up at the open sky and muttering fearfully.

Heading into the crowd, the Silver Shields look heavenward, and witness the sight.

To the west, a clear, cloudless, star filled sky.
The twin moons overhead.
To the east, blackness. Nothing but blackness.

And there. A line. A line of black from horizon to horizon, advancing across the night. Like a cloak drawing across the sky, it covers star upon star upon star.

Within ten minutes, the eastern half of the sky is nothing but deepest darkness.
The line reaches the moons. As it touches the first, the color of both moons instantly change from bright white to a deep orange.

The cloak of blackness does not stop. It covers the orange moons, and the rest of the stars, until nothing but blackness remains.

The temperature continues to drop. It is now nearly freezing. Frost is forming on windows and the small garden areas.

The crowd murmurs fearfully. What is happening? What does the mean? What will happen to us?

And then, a shout. A familiar voice (to the older members of the group) calling for you.
“Silver Shields! Silver Shields!”
It is Jaspar, the previous tenant/housekeeper of Shield House. The ratfolk had returned to Trash Level to be with his family. Now, he’s back. And he’s terrified.

Clamping onto Micah’s arm, the wide-eyed fellow pleads, nearly hysterical.
“Help! You must come! The Witches! The Witches say the Gate is opening! Its opening now! And Evil Follows!”

Jaspar is tugging on Micah’s arm, seemingly intent on dragging him to wherever it is he’s talking about.

The citizens of the Fence Level are retreating through the cold and the dark to their homes. Meanwhile, throughout the Float, deep, orange, lighting-like arcs of light flash across an otherwise pitch black ‘sky’.

Micah stares at the encroaching darkness, then Jaspar's call draws him from his fascination.

To the others he calls, "This is Jaspar, a trusted friend and one who is often uncannily well informed." He then turns to the ratman, giving him his full attention, "Lead on. We will follow, but first, what witches? What gate? And where are you taking us?"

As he turns to follow, he looks pleadingly to the others. To himself he say, Domi, help us.

"It's a wee bit on the chilly side," Bartomus noted as they walked back to their headquarters. "Really cold."

When the ratfolk came and asked for help, he was a bit surprised at how quick Micah vouched for them. He shrugged and followed them as they were being led away from their headquarters. When he heard mention of witches and a gate, he tried to go back through his memories of his short time on the Float for some reference to such things.

Wednesday November 1st, 2017 10:15:55 AM

Apologies for the missed post yesterday...got caught up in work and the Halloween with the kids.

As the group makes its way down from Rosebud Publishing, Stock just keeps going over Sir Stephan's sudden admission. Almost like the guys wanted to admit it.I wonder if it was guilt or just stupidity. Probably not stupidity given the guy's reputation...

When they see the crowd gathering at the edge of the Float, Stock breaks into a jog to see what the commotion is about. He is lost in the sight when he hears Micah's conversation behind him. He turns and seeing a ratfolk hanging onto the cleric, Stock's first instinct is to reach for the flail strapped to his pack. He slows when he realizes that Micah does not appear to be threatened.

As the group follow Jaspar, Stock finishes readying his weapon. His adrenaline is up and he does not yet feel the cold covering the city. He is profoundly unnerved by such a powerful supernatural event.

Dorbin doesn't like that darkness. He ponders if this is something magical (knowledge, arcana: 20). He then casts light on a copper coin, making it as bright as he can as if that can hold back the strange darkness.

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 48/48 AC: 23 T: 11 FF: 22 CMD: 19

Pensive as they head back home, Zander mood fits with the chill so he doesn't notice it at first. However as his breath starts becoming a cloud in front of his face he feels the chill permeating his body. Having grown up here this feels wrong. The lake usually stopped this kind of drastic weather change. His step quickens as a sense of urgency grows within the group. As they join the crowd looking at the sky his first instinct is to calm the crowd. But his words freeze in his mouth as he sees the darkness covering the sky. As the first of the twin moons disappear a cold shiver runs down his spine. Hearing Jaspar he smiles, glad to see the strange fellow again, especially as he comes bringing information. Wasting no time he roars out to the crowd. "EVERYONE LISTEN! Something is going on here and we're going to find out what. Go back to your homes and watch out for your neighbors. Pass the word along, stay in groups, and Domi protect us all." Hoping his words sound less hollow than they feel in his mouth Zanderallen straps on his shield as he hustles after Jaspar and the others.

Sid tries to take in everything he can about the encroaching darkness and as Jasper runs up he pulls out a quill, ink, and a piece of paper. He unwraps the quill and quickly writes down a note. He folds it up letter-style, rewraps the quill and puts everything back into his bag except the letter. He finds one of the boys that is usually running around and says, "Lad, can you run this letter to Miss Elly at the Broken Arrow?" He quietly puts a gold in his other hand and sends the lad off. He looks at the darkness and exhales. "Ok, so let's go to a magic evil gate guys!"

Stohp notices the cold and wonders, but goes back to her own brooding and stops noticing until the sky goes dark. As she watches she first thinks that the sky enchantment is failing, but the orange moons dissuade that notion. She looks about in confusion much like the rest of the crowd at first, but Jasper's appearance and information fills her with a sense of purpose. Even if they're nothing they can do about the sky they can do something about this gate.

She looks around at the crowd, trying to spot a messenger (Perception 21). If she spots such a person she gets his or her attention, grabbing them if necessary, otherwise she grabs the closest civilian. "We need to let the adventurers guild know what's going on. This might not be affecting all of the levels, and even if it is they need to hear of our lead. Tell them that the Silver Shields have a lead down on the trash level and we may need support. I'll send someone up with more information as I get it."

If there's anyone to send with a message. She thinks to herself. Pressing 3g into their hands she waves him off. "Go! Your message may save us all!"

DM MikeK - Witches
Wednesday November 1st, 2017 9:40:32 PM

Bartomus and Sid try to recall anything like this happening before. But, this is unprecedented.

Zanderallen attempts to calm the crowd, who is already dispersing.

Most of the Shields match Stohp’s view that following Jasper to wherever he’s going beats standing around and doing nothing.

Most of the urchins are already off the street, but the lure of a gold piece is enough for one to take a message to Elly.

Three gold finds plenty of volunteers. And the boy is off with Stohp’s message.

The Shields follow Jasper, requesting more information as they move.

“Lerntig’s Gate, on the Trash Level,” Jasper answers, nearly breathless.
Know Local DC 12 Highlight to display spoiler: { - Lerntig's Gate is and old, powerless, once-magical one way gate on Trash Level Back in the day, strangers arrived regularly and very surprised from across the realm. But, no one has come through in decades.}.

Jasper continues. “A coven set up in a shack across from it about a week ago, sqwaking about the End Times coming and Prepare to Meet Thy Doom…the usual doom and gloom. But they predicted the darkness and the cold. And now the Gate is glowing. And they say Evil is coming.”

The group hurries down to the Trash Level, down Dead Man’s Run, and into the alley leading to the old Lerntig’s Gate.

A screeching voice calls out, “The Rat Comes! He leads The Bull, The Hammer, and The Flower!”
A second, equally shrill. “Come Shields! Come! Your Doom Awaits!”

Three haggard, hideous looking crones hover around a large cauldron in a shack opposite the gate, warming themselves over its steaming contents. They cackle and beckon the group over.

Across from them is a stone arch, the center of which appears to glowing a dull cinnamon color.

"Stohp, a flower? Well then, be careful witch for if you think she can be easily plucked there may be thorns," Bartomus said laughing. "As to me, well now, a Bull I can be, easily breaking things frail and fragile. But, come now can't we just be a bit friendly and not focus on the doom and gloom?"

Stohp blinks at Micah. "What I"m a flower because I'm a girl? Use your head, I'm clearly the bull, you're the hammer, and K's the flower."

There's a beat before she remembers K left the group. "No wait... um... maybe her prophecy got confused?"

Zanderallen scans the crones for evil. He finds none. The crones in turn each give Zanderallen an arched eyebrow and crooked grin. One winks at him.

Stock and Micah ask the witches what they’re up to, but most of the rest of the Shields segue into light hearted banter around who’s the Flower. At Stohp’s observation that K would be the perfect Flower, were he still part of the group, the crones’ mouths drop open in unison.

Witch 1 slaps Witch 2. “You said there was a paladin of Flower!” she hisses.
Her companion whines defensively, “Well, he was there the last time I went by.”
Witch 3 snorts. “Blood and Fire. Now we just look stupid.”
“You keep out of this,” snaps Witch 2. She turns to Micah. “And we’re not doing anything, thank you very much. We’re watching and warning.”
“Not very well,” grumbles Witch 3.

Witch 1 slaps both of them. “Will you pay attention!” she shrieks.

All three look into the cauldron.
Their faces fall, and in unison, each look at the Gate, and murmur, ”uh oh”

“Draw swords, heroes!” shrieks Witch 1. “Evil Comes!”

Lerntig’s Gate is an arch about ten feet across and ten feet high. It is most definitely glowing now.

Stock chuckles and shakes his head.

He addresses the witches: "You know it takes away from the strength of the prophecy when it is not quite correct. Also, I'm a little disappointed to be left out of it. I can recommend a few code names for myself: The Hammer, The Anvil, The Beast...I like that one..anyway...The Red-haired avenger, Crusher of skulls. I mean there are lots of options there..."

"Micah, cast any spells you want now. Things are going to start speeding up in a moment."

He looks to the witches, "Ladies, are you alright, do you need any chairs or a nice pot of tea? You're not cold are you." The gate glows brighter, "Hmmm, maybe this area isn't safe now on second thought. Do you need an escort home?"

If it wasn't for the fact that the sky had just gone black and the portal in front of them Zander would have a very hard time believing anything these witches said. "You three aren't the best doomsayers I've ever heard of. Have any actually useful advice, and how'd you know the portal was opening?" But with a portal to the unknown, atleast to him, opening right in front of him there was only one thing to do. "Dorbin, Micah, anyone really, do you know anything about these gates? Like how to close one might become really important really soon." Preparing himself for battle he notes Stoph's positioning and takes a stand immediately in front of her, standing so her arms can reach around him. Dropping his visor into place and drawing his blade he readies for whatever might come through.

"On it," he replies to Stock's suggestion and moves within reach of Zanderallen. He prepares to cast Magic Circle against Evil on the paladin should something clearly threatening step through the portal.

He shakes his head at Zander's question about the gate, but glances at Dorbin to see what he may know.

The glowing Gate gives some credence to the witch’s cry, and the Shields form up in front of it.
Micah and Dorbin consider how one might close a magical portal, but come up empty.

The Gate flashes, and becomes transparent. A window to another place. Or more accurately, a door.
On the other side is a wasteland of black rock under an eerie, cloud covered, sulfur colored sky.
A blast of even colder air rushes from the gate, and six figures emerge.
The flesh of these walking corpses is rotting and putrid, their bodies skeletal in places and their eye sockets glow with red light. Unlike everyone else, no fog of breath escapes their lips.

Micah immediately casts his readied Magic Circle Against Evil.

Sid tries to figure out what the creatures are, but can’t. He fires another arrow into #6.

Micah identifies the undead as a form of wight. They pretty much have the properties already discovered. Of note is the energy drain can be cured, ex – by a restoration spell. Or, if you’re feeling bold, a fort save after 24 hours determines whether the effect is removed (or made permanent).

The cleric blasts the undead with another wave of positive energy.

Bartomus drops #6.

Zanderallen buries his sword deep into #2

Dorbin calls out to the crones, but gets no reply. Turning his head, he sees they’re gone. Nothing left but a cauldron on a fire. At least nothing else is appearing in the gate.

Stock rips deeply into #5.

Stohp trips #2.

The wights are all looking pretty bad, even for wights. But, the undead press on.

DM MikeK - Another visitor
Wednesday November 8th, 2017 9:44:22 PM

Micah destroys #1 and Zanderallen moves over and takes out #5, whom both Stock and Sid missed.

The only wight left is the prone #2, and it only takes another sword stroke to take him out.

-------------- Combat is over ---------------------

Bartomus and Dorbin head back to the cauldron to try and figure out where the crones went, and if anything is around that looks like it might open (and close) a magic Gate.

The summoner has better luck with the first objective, noting multiple sets of cat prints (housecat sized) leading away from the cauldron, and back up the alley.

But as for Gate-magic, nothing looks promising.

And then, a figure steps through the Gate. Stopping before Dorbin’s grease spell is a very pale, very good looking, male half elf, armored in breastplate and with a longsword sheathed at his side. Pretty much everything he's wearing screams masterwork level craftsmanship. Though shorter than an average human, he has a very commanding, regal presence about him.
DM emphasis – Very Commanding. Very Regal.

Holding up his hands, palms out, in the universal “I’m not holding a weapon” posture, the half-elf calmly takes in the scene, his eyes pausing ever so briefly on Zanderallen and Micah before moving on.

”I am Lord Vanius,” he greets the group politely in a clear, cool baritone. ”As you are disciples of Domi, I presume this is the Wold proper. May I ask what city is this?”

When the others began making noise about something happening within the gate, he turned back to watch and stood in awe as the regal figure stood before them. Before responding he looks significantly at Zanderallen. "Greetings, Lord Varius, he says with a nod. "I am Brother Micah, of Domi, as you have observed. What brings you to the Wold?" While speaking, he moves next to Zanderallen, lowering his mace, but not returning it to his belt.

He pauses to turn his gaze to include the fallen wights before continuing, "Were these yours?

Somewhat taken aback by the appearance of this almost divine presence Zander isn't quite sure how to react. On guard from the wights he's inclined to be cautious, but Lord Vanius didn't seem like a being you wanted to offend. Catching Micah's look he immediately knows what it means and sees the wisdom in caution. First he makes sure he is standing in the middle of the group, trying to make sure as many Shields as possible are protected by the Magic Circle vs. Evil, mindful of it's protection from mental possession. Then he focuses his inner eye, searching Lord Vanius for evil.

If he senses no evil. Zander bows, "Well met Lord Vanius, please forgive the intrusion but having just fought wights out of that same gate we can't be too careful. I am Zanderallen, paladin of Domi, of the Silver Shields. You have arrived in our protected domain, a city known as the Float."

If he senses evil. Zander raises his sword and shield, "You speak nicely, but the darkness in your heart says otherwise. We are the Silver Shields and this city is under our protection."

DM MikeK - Vanius
Thursday November 9th, 2017 10:23:43 PM

The Shields greet Lord Vanius warily, but courteously. Sid welcomes him to the Float.

”Floating City?” Vanius responds, and then looks about him at the archway.
”This would be Lerntig’s Gate, then. Yes, that would make sense.”

Micah is more than wary. ”Were these yours?”

”More or less” the half elf answers, watching Zanderallen watch him.

The fact that Lord Vanius isn’t leaving a breath cloud when he talks is noticeable.

Zanderallen falls into a defensive position.
” You speak nicely, but the darkness in your heart says otherwise. We are the Silver Shields and this city is under our protection”

Zanderallen Highlight to display spoiler: { Not only is Vanius strongly evil, his sword is moderately so. }

”That is quite rude, you realize,” Vanius responds calmly, his hands never moving. ”I am sure you do your city credit. However, on this night I come not for your city or its citizens, or you, but for a different purpose altogether. One, it turns out, that will be collaterally beneficial to you, and those under your wing.

Something is coming, young mortals. Something momentous and destructive. Both I and my Mistress have bent our wills to divine its nature, but we cannot. But, the omens are everywhere.”

Vanius glances at the Trash Level’s ceiling, darkest black laced with occasional flashes of orange.
”Everywhere.”

”The event is coming soon. And preceding it, the boundaries between the Wold and Lands of Rest are blurring. Gates and portal long inactive, such as this one, are again open.

My Mistress is … concerned. By her command I will find and seal as many of these portals as is possible in the time remaining to us.

Therefore, if you would be so kind as to step back 30 or 40 paces, so that I feel secure enough to concentrate on the task at hand, I will seal this gate, and no further intruders from the Harrowed Moon will cross its threshold.”

Micah (John) HP: 46/46 AC: 25/12/25 CMD:17  d20+9=20 ;
Thursday November 9th, 2017 10:49:34 PM

Micah always was good with numbers and he has no doubt that this self proclaimed Lord is as well. Given that, it worries him that seven to one does not seem to concern this intruder in the slightest, despite Zanderallen's warning. It also is not lost on him that this being refers to them as "mortals".

Micah gestures to the others and begins to back up, but only a few steps as he asks, "I have no desire to see such a gate left open, but why do you and your mistress share this view?"

He takes a more steps back and pauses to ask, "Who is this mistress and what are you lord of?"

Not really focusing on the stranger, he waits until Micah says his piece and then he edges closer to Micah and says in a low voice.

"Hey...uh...I'm not really that hurt but something happened when that undead thing touched me. I feel it. I think I'll be fine but can you help?"

Zanderallen looks almost as if he were struck at Lord Vanius' comment. His complete indifference to the implied threat and the odds being so heavily stacked melt Zander's boldness. Glad of his companions' questions to move the conversation along Zander's brain is spinning as he tries to figure out what best to do. If only he had any idea who this being was. Figuring either way his companions need to know he makes the sign to Micah, and by now the rest of the Shields, for evil, then taps his scabbard with a significant look at Lord Vanius and makes the sign again. He maintains his position front and center of the Shields but backs up with them.

DM MikeK - Going, going,
Sunday November 12th, 2017 6:04:02 PM

The Shields know Vanius is evil, and they know he knows they know. The unnerving part is, he doesn’t care. Outnumbered seven to one by a well armed group that just smoked half a dozen wights, Vanius is still acting as if he’s in complete control.

The Shields slowly back away as requested, but remain vigilant. Space they will give, anything more will result in a fight, Lord or no Lord. A few ask questions, and a more than a few try to piece together some of the names and places spoken about.

Thursday’s rolls count. Can roll now if you had not before.

Know Religion DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: { The Lands of Rest provide rest for those who are good of heart and mind. Here the Good and Noble Races find their true selves once again and find contentment after a life of strife and hardship. The Lands of Rest are separated from the Wold by the Shadow Lands. It connects to the Wold in such a way that the dead know how to find it as well as those priests who deal with the dead. }

Know Religion DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: { The Shadow Lands are composed of many realms of dead, not quite dead, and even fey. Basically, kingdoms and realm not of the Wold. Harrowed Moon is one such realm. It is rumored to be a place of horrors, ruled by an undead Queen named Fidelia }

Know Local DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Back in the day, Lerntig's Gate was a magical gate through which strangers arrive regularly and very surprised. It was something of a game among the Trash Level denizens to see how much gold they could get out of the newcomers’, with one tale or another, before they caught on. But nothing has come through the gate in decades, and it was assumed to be broken. }

No one has heard of a Lord Vanius before.

Once the heroes have stepped back a little, Vanius also steps back, so that he is on his side of gate. Giving Stohp a smirk, he begins an incantation, moving along the width of the arch and touching it at odd intervals. Occasionally, he pauses, waits for something, and continues. During the pauses, he answers a question or two.

”My Mistress is Fidelia, Queen of Harrowed Moon. We seek to close as many new openings to our realm, such as this one, so that when The Event comes, we will be in a position to focus solely on it, without distraction.

The barrier between the Wold and the Shadow Lands is thinning, and in places breaking. Here, and elsewhere. Where those openings are in your city, does not concern me. This one does. I have found no others between your city and my realm.”

The archway is turning opaque. Vanius is nearly done.

Stock leans over to let Micah know he’s not feeling so good.

Dorbin sees the others moving towards the gate and quickly waves his hand to dispel the grease on the ground at the entranceway.

DM MikeK - About this plan.....
Monday November 13th, 2017 8:06:01 PM

Micah recalls his teachings. No plan of Fidelia can possibly be a good thing.
He cries, “Queen Fidelia is ruler of the hallowed lands an undead queen of the undead. Her purposes cannot align with ours. You must be stopped.”

The cleric casts an enlarge spell on Stock, and charges.

Stohp echoes the call, pointing out that an invasion is likely.

The others aren’t quite so sure, but all advance as well, except for Dorbin, who removes the Grease spell in their way, and Sid who readies his bow.

”FOOLS! Enough of this!” Vanius cries. He casts his readied spell.

Suddenly, up is down, and down is up. All seven heroes “fall” straight up for 10’, and then stop. They remain in the air, oscillating slightly. Everyone can move, just not in any direction.

Vanius is so mad, he’s practically foaming.

“You petty striplings think this is an invasion? You should be so lucky! You think WE caused this? You have no concept of the powers aligning. THE END IS NIGH! The End of EVERYTHING! Of the Wold AND of the Shadow Lands. The very GODS tremble at the approach, and NO ONE, not even they, can discern what comes!

Look about you! Cities are rocked with earthquakes, hurricanes appear from thin air, the very sky is blotted out! No little ones. The Harrowed Moon prepares her defense, and I have no time to bandy with boys posing as holy men! I will seal this breach. If you again attempt to interfere, I will turn you to ash.”

It would have been cowardice to leave evil unchallenged, but it takes true courage to admit defeat. ”you’ve made your point, Vanius. We will no longer interfere with your shutting down of the gate,” he says resignedly. ”you may release us. What is it that we CAN do in light of the developing events?”

Hearing Micah's question, Stock adds, "I'd settle for knowing just what is happening that might draw us together as allies...temporarily of course."

Very much put out by being suddenly and unexpectedly floating in the air Zanderallen struggles for a couple seconds before admitting defeat in the face of a superior foe. Still not pleased with such evil being able to pass uncontested he recognizes his inability to stop it and the possibility of something worse. "You must realize your actions could just as easily be interpreted as acts to secure and strengthen the gate and connection between our lands as to seal it. And excuse me if the sky turning dark and wights attacking seems like an invasion of an Undead Queen of the Shadow Lands. But it seems we are forced to accept your words due to our inability to contest you." Seriously pondering the effectiveness of hurling his sword at Lord Vanius he decides against it as a futile action and fearing the consequences not to himself but to his companions. He is restrained to floating helplessly and glaring at Lord Vanius.

DM MikeK - Goodbye and Hello
Tuesday November 14th, 2017 8:36:12 PM

Micah recognizes the spell. Micah – Highlight to display spoiler: { Reverse Gravity. It should wear off shortly. }

He and his companions briefly ponder their situation, and come to the collective realization that there is not a whole lot they can do at the moment.

Many of the group ask more questions, but Vanius has apparently decided he’s had enough, and ignores them.

Instead, he finishes whatever it is he’s doing.

The scene of the blasted wasteland goes dark, taking Lord Vanius with it.
For a moment the archway is black.
And then, there is a flash of light, and the archway is merely an archway again. Just an opening to the next room, not another world.

Everything is pretty much back to normal.

Except for the blackened sky.
And the missing moon and stars
And the six dead wights at your feet.
And the unattended cauldron bubbling softly behind you.
Oh, and also the fact the group is still floating 10’ in the air.

And … what about these two new figures, looking very surprised, who appeared in the archway right after that flash of light?

One is a female dark elf. The other a male human with a slight build wearing an immaculate suit.
Both are equipped with a crateful of very expensive looking, and probably seriously magical, gear.

And, really, they both look kinda familiar….

So like, the first thing you notice about this guy is that he really knows how to dress. I mean, the crimson suit with the golden trim, the matching top hat with the peacock feather tucked into the band, the naked blade that hangs from his belt that shimmers and swirls in a hypnotic rainbow of colors...dude is fancy. That holy symbol of Wardd around his neck is probably platinum.

The second thing one might notice is that while he's not physically imposing, he carries himself without a hint of apprehension. He seems completely unfazed about showing up...wherever this is.

"Ok, love, if this is like the last place, we have like...ten minutes. We have a cauldron, some dead wights, and those folks floating over there." He looks down at his feet. "We're not floating, so that's probably a reverse gravity spell." He looks around. "Did Tink beat us here? Not that we'd find her if she did."

He turns towards those folks floating over there and walks towards them. He draws Shiny & holds the blade in front of him, stopping when it starts floating up. He grips his holy symbol, then stops when he sees at least one symbol of Domi floating around. "So, looks like we have ourselves some adventurers. Let's get you out of there."

He gives absolutely zero warning before waving his hand and dispels the reverse gravity field (dispel check: 38 - that should do it). He walks over to Zander (who is no doubt fallen on his backside) & looks down. "Restlin the Wizard, or Restlin the Mage-Priest, or Restlin the Mendicant." He offers a hand up. "Want to tell us what we walked in on?"

Bartomus shifted about to see what had occurred with the gate as Lord Vanius vanished into the flash of light that seemed to close the gate. When he could see through the aftermath of the flash that had filled the corridor, he saw two people walk through the gate. He recognized them from a painting. They were in a painting in the Giggling Ghost, they were important. He could pull up their names as he was having to pull up, or rather hold up his kilt, his clothing to ensure he wasn't showing more than he should.

Then he was falling, and he quickly tucked and tried to make sure he didn't break anything or anyone one. When he heard the man introduce himself, he could see in his mind the name written out at the bottom of the portrait in the Ghost.

Sesha, Blood Witch of Serenbeth
Wednesday November 15th, 2017 12:19:16 AM

Stumbling from the light behind Restlin, Sesha hisses at the sudden brightness. Squinting her eyes for a minute, she waves away the spots and gets her bearings. At least, tries to get them.

"Twilight Kin and bright lights! Gah!"

After a moment, she rubs her eyes again and really observes her surroundings. She seems confident, and not totally surprised to be somewhere she shouldn't.

"Explain please, consort."

She is young, especially for an elf. Her grey-blue skin is smooth, where it shows, and underneath her black leather skirts and top, a bright glint of silver reveals her fine mithril armor. Her eyes are brown, and her arms and legs are slender and toned. A beaten and worn cauldron hangs from a chain on her belt.

"I'll help you fire the first synapse. The first time we went through the orbs we were sent to an alternate reality pocket where Marteus rules the day. This time we got sent to..", Sesha gestures around her. ".. and we are here with...", she gestures again, this time to the various heroes scattered along the ground.

"Really Mage-Priest, I'm not sure if you wizards are worth the trouble. Though it's probably not fair to lump you in with the Star Mages. They don't have a Witch or Matron among them to help them see up from down."

With a sigh, she comes forward and offers a hand up to Sid. He gets the feeling she's picked him for a reason, her face sort of like a child that has bravely decided to eat her most hated greens.

"Up you go, Surface Elf. Lets get you all to your feet." As she speaks, her eyes dart from person to person, looking for wounded, as if it were the first thing she was always expected to do."Is anyone hurt? Please tell me the wights didn't get ahold of anyone."

Given the current state of things, Micah decides to just react to the new developments rather than try to make sense of it all beforehand. That can be done at a later, calmer time he thinks. He shudders at a sudden thought: that given the current portents, there might not be a calmer time--or a later.

Pulling himself to his feet, he addresses Restlin's questions. "Thank you, sir. You are correct in that we were victim's of a reverse gravity spell cast by one who called himself Lord Vanius and claimed to be a servant of Queen Fidelias.

His stated purpose was of being here was to close as many new openings to his realm so that when "The Event" comes, they will be in a position to focus solely on it without distraction. He also said that this was the only opening between his realm in the Shadow Lands and the Float.'

He pauses a moment to gather his thoughts before continuing, "This city is the Float and you came through what is known as Lerntig's Gate. It suddenly opened and these wight's came through. We dispatched them, but not before two of our number were drained by them. He indicates who those two are with a nod to Bartomus and Stock.

"Vanius came through immediately thereafter. When we tried to interfere, he caught us all with his spell. He then finished closing the gate, disappearing as he did so just before you arrived."

Micah has never seen a dark elf before and is cautious to not stare as he acknowledges her with a polite nod.

Restlin the Mage-Priest - Carl
Wednesday November 15th, 2017 9:54:09 AM

Restlin spins to face Sesha, dropping the half-way up paladin back to the ground.

"Look lady, you're not the matron of anything yet...and don't go pulling the 'consort' card on me just because there are strangers you're trying to look cool around. We both know you dig me." He turns back and finishes helping Zander to his feet. "She does, you know. She totally digs me," he says to Zander with a wink.

Like lightning, Restlin's taken a knee in front of Stock. "Restlin the Mendicant, proud member of the Iron Dragons at your service." He takes Stock's hand & gives it a quick shake before turning back to Sesha. "Evidently we're in The Float. That's all the way on the Northern Continent...long way from Hook City. Question is are we in the same reality we left, or some alternate version?" He looks up, trying to see if the night sky gives any indication. "Huh, you folks don't have stars here? What happened to your sky?"

He walks back to Sesha, eyes still on the sky, and drapes an arm across her shoulders. "...and for the record, lumping me in with the Star Mages is not healthy for our relationship."

Dorbin elbows Stock and whispers rather loudly, "These are two of THE Iron Dragons! You know, big-time heroes!" (knowledge, local: 13).

Dorbin is a small fellow, small even for a half-elf. He stands 5’6”, but at 100 pounds, there’s not a lot to him. He is usually seen wearing grey robes that just don’t fit him right. If he gets robes that fit his upper body, they don’t cover his legs. If he gets robes long enough for his legs, there is just too much material in the body part. He usually looks like he is wearing robes that are just too big for him. He looks like a small human, but the silver eyes betray his heritage, if you can get him to look at you long enough to see them. There is a small, light crossbow that he normally carries to keep away some of the bandits, or at least hope they will look for an easier target. Almost always underfoot is his grey cat familiar named Emily Jasmine.

Sid twists and turns as soon as he is released and falls lightly on his feet. While he is falling though, his mind races and places the strangers as Iron Dragons. He stumbles and falls on his butt. For a moment dogs on several levels start barking as he squees so hard that it goes supersonic. "Wardd's pockets why are Iron Dragons here?" He takes her hand and stands up and does a quick recap of the battle in a tumbling rush of words. In his fanboy haste he switches to Elven, and then slips into Gnomish while he shakes her hand.

Recognizing the two figures as Dragons Zander jaw drops. A good five count passes as he stares at the man helping him to his feet. Finally composing himself as Micah finishes speaking he is just able to answer Restlin's next question. "We usually have stars they went dark about 5, 10 minutes ago. And by dark I mean a wave passed through the sky, obscuring all it crossed, including our twin moons. All that remains is that orange lightning." Shuffling awkwardly Zander really really wants to ask for an autograph but knows it's a really really bad time. Duty wins out though with current events. Instead he offers their services, "I don't know how much help we can be to Dragons, but I think I speak for the Silver Shields when I say we are yours to command. We know our way around the Float and offer our knowledge and blades, such as they are, to aid in whatever way we can."

DM MikeK - Iron Dragons! Sweet.
Wednesday November 15th, 2017 9:01:03 PM

The Iron Dragons, Restlin and Sesha, quickly and confidently evaluate the situation, remove the reverse gravity spell, and check on the Silver Shields for wounds.

Sesha’s evaluation is confirmed by Micah, cleric of Domi, who lets the witch know that two of the adventurers - Stock, the dwarf, and Bartomus, the kilt wearing minotaur – were struck by the wights.

The Silver Shields, in turn, react to their current brush with greatness with varying degrees of propriety, from complete fanboy Sid, to completely clueless Grumpy, er, Stock.
(To be fair, Stock has had a pretty lousy evening).

The do tell the two that they are in Floating City, and the stars and moons were covered only a little while ago, and they just completed a fairly interesting encounter with a fellow named Vanius.

Sesha, Blood Witch of Serenbeth
Wednesday November 15th, 2017 9:08:42 PM

Sesha dips under Restlins arm, spinning to face him for just long enough to tap him on the nose.

"Tag.", she says. "You're it, and that's all there is to it until your human lifespan goes poof."

Apparently done with THAT subject, she winks at her Mage-Priest before answering Zanderrallen while on the move to Bartomus, a white nimbus of healing energy already glowing in her hands.

"You've already helped a lot, Silver Shields. We have a better idea of what these orbs in Hook City do, because we know you are the you's of our universe and timeline, as opposed to the you's of another such thing. We also know that the weird stuff happening in our city is happening in varying degrees across the entire world. And apparently, there's a bad thing happening soon, and it's so terrible that even a reclusive moon goddess and her vampire consort are willing to risk involvement with the world to slow it down."

She fishes a couple of glass vials, stuffed with diamond dust from her packs. She carried around fifty thousand gold worth of the stuff with her at a given time. Miracle spells could get expensive. In this case though, she was only too happy to help.

"Gather around Shields, if you took the bad touch from the wights. Everyones favorite blood witch will fix you right as rain." She stares hard at Stock. "You too, gruff one. No point in being stubborn. I've got a Grim Avenger of Gargul that I have to convince not to smite me every time I play with Woldsblood, and even he falls in line when it's time for me to dole out the healing. You'll just be delaying the inevitable."

Sesha has the spells remaining, and the diamond dust, to cast back to back restorations on the afflicted heroes.

His own reaction is tempered by the recall of one of his father's sayings A masterfully made blade is an impressive weapon, but it still started out as a humble piece of ore.

He nods agreement with Zanderallen's offer of assistance. While waiting for a reply he renews his detect magic and keeps an eye open for any new magical developments.

"One human lifetime with you is plenty, lady!" he calls after her.

He moves to stand next to Micah, offering a quick handshake. "A priest, eh? I'm a priest myself." He holds up his holy symbol of Wardd. It is indeed platinum and masterfully crafted by his own hand. "I'm not a very good priest, but a priest nonetheless." He puts the holy symbol away. "Anyway, whatever's going on is going on in Hook City too, and it's a safe bet to assume it's more wide-spread than that as well. We've got alternate realities, portals to the shadow realms, not to mention all the weird stuff going on with Gargul that I'm not supposed to tell you about."

Restlin stretches a bit and removes his pack, putting it down on the ground & rummaging through it. "Yup, bet those Star Mages are gonna have a blast figuring out what's going on. I'm just excited to see what comes next. Ah, here we are." He pulls out a small brass music box. The symbol of Domi is carved on the lid. He opens it up, revealing a small automaton blacksmith hammering on its anvil. The tune "If I Had a Hammer" begins playing. "Something to fancy up your room back at Silver Shields HQ. If you folks are anything like the Iron Adventurers were when we were starting out, you probably live in some crap hole. Am I right?" He tilts his head, waiting for an answer.

Still not quite sure where they stand and whay course of action to pursue he awaits directions. The talk of Gargul, alternate realities, and shadow realms going way beyond his experience on the streets of the Fence. Restlin's quip about their home digs a little as Zander had become quite proud of their headquarters since the renovations. But he can't but admit that not too many days ago crap hole would have been an accurate statement. "You're only half right there. It started out as pretty much a crap hole. But the merchants of the Fence have really spruced the place up as thanks for our services. But wait a minute, shouldn't we be doing something about the whole end of the world business? Is this portal really and truly closed? What about the other gates on the Float?" Almost before he finishes talking his mouth snaps shut as he realizes he kind of just told off a Dragon.

"This is the first we've heard of gates. I don't think Hook City has one. Instead, we are dealing with some orbs that showed up, growing all green and magicky, that are sending us to alternate realities. Apparently, our friends just met another version of the Iron Dragons."

She fusses with Stock just a little more, wiping away his cuts and bruises with a cure light wounds spell. (Stock, Heal 11)

"I think whatever is happening, it's world wide. I also think areas in all corners of the Wold have having different issues. We had a seer from the Star Mages come and deliver a prophecy to us. It went something like this."

"Long has the Sleeper laid dormant.
Long has the seed awaited spring.
The Sleeper will Awake with fire.
The Sleeper will Awake with fear.
The bones of the Wold will it break.
The flesh of the Wold will it feast.
'Til all is made as the Sleeper.
'Til its children inherit all."

She sighs, and finishes packing away her diamond dust.

"We are trying to figure out what it means, but apparently it isn't a localized event. Several diviners have reported all divination magic being unsafe, so I haven't tried any myself, though I think it might be about time to try and talk with Serenbeth."

Restlin the Mage-Priest - Carl  d20+33=41 ;

Sense motive: 41 - Restlin likely notices Zander's reaction to his own words, but just grins a bit then moves on.

***

"Well yea you can see it, it's yours," answers Restlin as he hands the box over to Micah. He stoops down & picks up Emily. He pets her behind the ears & under her muzzle. "You can tell a lot about a wizard by their familiar. This one's obviously well taken care of & happy." He looks and addresses Emily directly. "A lot of wizards treat their familiars like servants. Don't take a nice one for granted." He puts the cat back down, petting her one last time.

"So anyway, we're not sure what's going on. I don't put much stock in divination magics. I swear the stuff only exists to make you think 'oh, that makes sense now' right as whatever the diviner hinted at finishes swallowing you. We'll keep investigating. Maybe we'll even figure out what's going on before the Wold is split in two."

Restlin looks around, seeing if there's anything they can do to help. Sesha's magic was very useful pre and post combat. Restlin's magic was much more useful during combat. He shrugs and goes back to chatting with the locals.

He digs out a simple looking straight razor & shows it to Zander. "Ever hear about the time I fought a blue dragon with this razor?" He stops to look at the razor in question. "Didn't work. Nailed it right in the eye, but even a dragon's eyes are armored. Dragon killed me pretty quickly after that." He puts the razor away. "I mean, he brought me back to life and all. He's where I got Shiny after I helped him find his grandma. Not the worst dragon I've ever met, not like that Umbral one out in Jericho space. She was a piece of work..."

Edit: Almost forgot. Restlin gives everyone around him +2 to saves, skill checks, and attack rolls due to his luck aura. I can also let you roll and D20 check twice & take the higher result. If you've been meaning to make knowledge checks, now's the time.

Stock coughs and looks down. Then looks back at the Mage-Priest. "Restlin...judging by the hero worship being exuded by the other Shields...I mean, all due respect and all...and I guess I have heard something of you and your group...but well ease back, friend. You already have our gratitude and respect but no need to brag about your razors and your dragons....

Now, I think we should head back to the HQ. If there is more trouble, the city will look for us there."

Sesha snort-giggles, and pats Stock on the back.

"Excellent! Well, lets head back to wherever it is you Silver Shields stay. I'll whip up a dinner that will make everyone feel much better, and will keep you tip top all through the day."

Assuming this is agreeable, Sesha will cast an extended Heroes' Feast.

Restlin the Mage-Priest - Carl

In all his years of storytelling, no one had ever accused Restlin of bragging. He's taken aback for a moment, then chuckles a bit before addressing the dwarf.

"Buddy, there are five stories I tell just about everyone I meet. The story of the time I almost got myself killed by trying to take a ladle from a zombie, the time I almost got myself killed trying to scout ahead by myself against a lich's army, the time the Iron Adventurers destroyed half a shanty town with a calm emotions spell, the time I got myself killed attacking a dragon with a straight razor." He pauses for a moment before kneeling down to look the dwarf in the eyes. "...and the time my friend Kyan cost us literally millions of gold pieces and got us thrown in jail by not realizing manners were important." He stands back up. "I'm not sure what you count as bragging, but surely you realize that if those were my most shining moments, I wouldn't be a Dragon."

All is forgotten when Sesha mentions dinner. He knew full well what it meant when it was her turn to cook, and the bagel he had for breakfast wasn't cutting it anymore...

Dorbin stares at Emily as Restlin lets her go. He smiles and steps forward when Sesha mentions going to the HQ and getting food. As the group starts to walk away he says, "How long will you be staying here?" After a moment's pause he adds, "And did the amazing halfling Garret Goodbarrel really fly on a dragon?"

"A feast sounds perfect, peppered with stories or rather legends," Bartomus said with an obvious hint of excitement mixed with fandom for being in the presence of the Iron Dragons. "Lady Shesha, again, thank you for the healing potion. I am eternally grateful."

He was working to keep the details of this encounter clear in his mind to share it at the Ghost someday when all of this prophecy thing worked its way out. "So, wait, a prophecy talked about the breaking of the Wold's bones, that has to mean the Wold itself. What could break the Wold?"

Not yet sold on the idea of feasting at a time like this, Zander stomach is a little empty after all the investigating they had done that afternoon. And Stock's suggestion of being at headquarters in case some one came looking for them made more sense than running around Willy nilly. So making no argument he falls in with the others. Feeling like he had little to add Zander keeps quiet, hoping deep in his heart they would be able to prove themselves real adventurers to a pair of living, breathing, touchable Dragons.

DM MikeK - Back to HQ
Saturday November 18th, 2017 10:25:56 AM

Some more discussion ensues, and a general agreement the a late dinner back at HQ would be good idea.

Given that the Shields missed dinner, several likely have rumblies in their tumblies.

The group departs - OOC - leaving behind six unsearched wight bodies?.

The Dragons note this is obviously the poorer section of town. They are told this is the Trash Level. The group climbs a set of public stairs to the Fence Level, and then find themselves at Shield HQ.
The Dragons will also note the 'sky' inside the city is artificial, a projection of some sort that the Shields, and other denizens of the Float take for granted. Or used to.

This artificial sky is completely dark, with an occasional lightning like flash of orange. The true sky, which can be seen from Shields HQ, is completely dark. On the Fence Level, multiple torches, everburning and just plain fire, line the shops and businesses on the street.

Shield HQ, while not a castle, is still pretty nice. A converted three story warehouse, it contains all the amenities, and has stairways and corridors sized to accommodate the two minotaurs in the group.

The kitchen and dining room are located on the third floor, but Sesha would decide the first floor, with its large, open area, is more suitable. She brings forth a great feast, including a magnificent table, chairs, service, and food and drink.

The aroma again gently reminds the Shields that they're pretty hungry.

OOC: I assume nothing was magical. Since Micah cast detect magic he would have noticed any auras on the wights.

Micah realizes this is no normal feast and recognizes that, though pleasurable in itself, the magical advantages may be unfortunately necessary.

Bartomus followed the Dragons in complete shock and as they wandered back to the Shield's Headquarters. The darkness of the Float and of the outside was unnatural. It was something that made him worried about what was about to happen. Yet, he also kept focused on the distraction of the Dragons. We are hanging with the Dragons, the Dragons. He couldn't believe it.

Restlin the Mage-Priest - Carl
Monday November 20th, 2017 10:12:59 AM

Restlin takes in the warehouse. He elbows Zander as he walks by. "You're right. This is pretty nice. Hook City locals always rewarded us with food instead of decor. Luckily Bosk has a secret passion for interior design." He puts his finger to his lips & wink, indicating it's inside, secret information.

He sits down next to Sid as they eat & tells the story the elf requested. "Yea, we used to adventure with this older wemic named Zeoll. Great guy. He made everyone around him better. He had this way of correcting your mistakes before you even realized you made them. I once watched Bosk barely miss an attack against this skeleton thing we were fighting in a magic ring, when Zeoll snapped his fingers and I swear to Wardd Bosk's axe backed up just a hair and connected with the thing. Zeoll was awesome.

"...but this one time we were in Mudtown. That's the shanty town that surrounds Hook City. Our weather control devices in the city make it rain a lot on the outskirts. Hence, Mudtown. Anyway, we were in mudtown, and there's this protection gang operating there that's not behaving properly. There's a long tradition of offering private protection to businesses in Hook City, in fact that's how the Iron Adventurers got their start. They were doing it wrong, though. They were shaking down people who didn't want to pay up, damaging their businesses, you name it. So we confronted them and things got heated quickly. That's when Zeoll cast calm emotions on the lot of them.

"Well, there was this big guy who was obviously not all there in the head. Turns out he wasn't muscle, he was a sorcerer who was a bit of a pyromaniac. He didn't appreciate Zeoll trying to mess with their heads like that, so he started throwing fireballs, and burning hands, and scorching rays everywhere. By the time we settled them down, there was a lot of property damage to Mudtown."

Restlin stops to take a drink of some pink fizzy stuff Sesha conjured up. "Don't know what she calls this stuff, and it's almost too sweet, but it's not bad. Anyway, Hook City refused to rebuild; they barely tolerated Mud Town anyway. Not one of our finer moments, really. Some friends of ours took the opportunity to create a settlement a few miles outside of town where Hook City laws had no sway.

"So anyway, takeaway here is that if you're going to prepare a calm emotions spell, be sure you silence it metamagically and cast it behind their backs."

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 48/48 AC: 25 T: 13 FF: 24 CMD: 19
Monday November 20th, 2017 10:24:51 AM

Zander seems a little down as they head back. With the initial adrenaline of the darkness spreading and the fight over the eerie darkness seems to weigh on his shoulders. That it should affect the Float "sky" scares him. While it could get dark in alleys and such there was always light somewhere in the "sky". This was worse than the openness of the forest sky. And the cold certainly wasn't helping either. Glad to be back at the now familiar headquarters his spirits are greatly lifted after eating, both by the taste of the food and the other effects. Leaning back in his chair after they finish eating he voices the question he is sure is on everyone's mind, "What do we do now? I think there are other gates in the Float, is anywhere else in danger?"

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:35/35 CMD:14]

Dorbin follows along and watches Sesha carefully as she creates the huge feast. He pulls out his notebook and jots down a few notes as he watches the food and table appear. Then he quickly tucks it away in his robes and takes a seat. Turns out, it has been awhile since he has eaten.

Stock walks with the rest back to the HQ and is amazed at the quality of the feast. Poking through the items on the table, he finds carafe of ice cold milk and helps himself. As stories are shared at the table, Stock pulls out some unfinished stones from a pouch at his waste and begins polishing them with some of the smaller lapidary tools he always keeps at the ready.

Forgot to get a stone from the publisher and the trash level. Oh well. I got plenty of work here as it is.

He listens to Restlin's stories and is continually surprised that he is the only one of the group who honestly has never heard any of these stories.

Stohp joins the rest for food, but doesn't really enjoy it. The conversation just sort of goes on around her until someone asks what they should do next. "I'm not sure there's much we can do. Whatever is going on it has powerful forces worried. That man had us all helpless with a wave of his hand. If someone that powerful is worried, how on earth can we help?"

The memory of the gravity lapse makes her shudder. They'd faced long odds before, heck a literal zombie apocalypse almost happened, and she's fallen in fights before, but she'd never felt completely helpless. At least when you get knocked out cold you usually go down swinging and are can't watch your encroaching death. Just being left hanging there, powerless, waiting for your fate to be decided...

DM MikeK - A time to rest?
Monday November 20th, 2017 9:09:39 PM

OOC - Everyone earns 1200 xp for the wight battle

Micah is confident no magic is on the destroyed wights, although, given the number and power of auras emanating from the Iron Dragons, it is possible he missed an item or two.

Sid and Stohp search the wights for sigils or some other identifying features. They do find each of the wights is wearing a necklace of what appears to be flattened strips of gold. They bear no engraving or other marking, but they could be worth something.

Despite Sesha’s feast and Restlin’s stories, the mood of the Silver Shields is generally somber. Events of monumental proportions are affecting their city, and with them comes a growing realization that they may be out of there depth.

Zanderallen and Stohp have questions, but no answers are forthcoming. No one is pounding on their door, so the emergencies seem to have abated. Floating City seems to be waiting.

The night starts growing late, and the day’s effort begin to catch up to the Shields.
Meanwhile, the pair of Dragons begin to feel the tell tale signs that their little interlude may be fast approaching its conclusion.

"Dont worry Stohp. I find that these sort of things always happen in scale relative to who is around to stop them. The gods and other natural forces in the Wold will push the Dragon Consortium where we need to be, which will leave heroes like you to fill the gaps where you need to be. Have faith in yourself and the other shields, and it will all work out fine."

She speaks with a smile, as best as she can to be reassuring.

"And we can focus on the bigger problems, knowing the people in the Float are in good hands."

She pokes Restlin, as she stands.

"Lets go love. We need to get back home. Since we are on the correct plane and timeline, a teleport should do the trick. If you don't have it memorized, I'll Shadow Walk us home instead. It should only take about an hour, and we'd be more or less alone all that time."

She grins.

"I wonder what trouble we might get into?"

She smiles and waves again, before either he, or she, casts the spell to head home.

Not sure whether to be embarrassed or amused at the antics of the two lover dragons, Zander stands at attention and salutes as the two of them step into Shadows. "We'll do our best to keep it safe here. Thank you for your help. Safe travels." As they leave he feels a little smaller, like the room is a little darker. Shaking off the feeling, and still bolstered by the Hero's Feast Zander considers their situation. "I don't know what's going on but we better be ready for anything, and ready to move at a moment's notice. Make sure you've got all you gear."

Starting to head up to his room Zander stops and puts his hand on Sid's shoulder, sensing his distress, "I don't know if Shield HQ is any safer than anywhere else right now. However it may be better to have loved ones close by at times like these. If you go, go quickly, and take someone with you. I would go but I would slow you down." Giving Sid's shoulder a squeeze Zander stomps up to his room, reflecting not having any family to worry about left him without distractions. But maybe that wasn't always best, thinking of the fire Sid would fight with to protect Elly. Grabbing his hammer he gives it a few swings the weight comfortable in his grasp. Stowing it in his belt he grabs a couple other items he didn't take to the printers and heads back to the main room, ready for anything.

Stock helps himself to what seems like slices of ham and a strong, white cheese on bread. It's not until he takes a bite that he realizes that the cheese is actually of a sort typically made only by dwarves. He is instantly transported back to his youth for a moment, eating a ham and cheese sandwich...

He finishes polishing the stone that he picked up from the Hands of Love Temple, holds it up to the light and smiles. He stands and heads over to the storage area and comes back wearing a new cloak and holding a ring and a potion. He places them on the table between Micah and Dorbin and says, "I think we still don't know what these are. They were from the farm. Any chance you either of you can figure out what they do?"[/b]

DM MikeK - Rumor mill in overdrive
Tuesday November 21st, 2017 8:19:02 PM

The Dragons take their leave, after some encouraging words.

The Shields settle in for a long night, preparing themselves for any possibilities. Sid disappears for a few minutes to retrieve Elly, who lives right around the block.

Nothing happens.

Morning comes, the sun peaking over the horizon in both real time and in the Float’s artificial sky. The temperature gradually rises, until it is at a normal level. It’s almost as if the night before never happened. Almost.

With the dawn comes a single loud voice calling in the street. A human in brown monk’s robes, cowl pulled over his greybearded face shuffles down the street, calling out at regular intervals, “The End is Nigh!”. He continues down the street, around the corner, and out of sight.

The day passes, slowly. Micah uses the time to identify the ring and potion brought out by Stock.

Ring of Protection +1, and Potion of Bulls Strength

Sid is also able to value the six gold necklaces recovered from the wights as worth 350 gp each.

Everyone reflects on their own reactions to encountering the Iron Dragons.

And the wait continues.

Come nightfall, the sky is again filled with stars and moons.
However, the Float’s artificial sky remains darkened. No flashes appear anymore. Its as if the Float’s sky is out. Torches and Everburning lights are again placed in front of shops and homes, but it feels like they don’t cast as much light as they should. The streets are dark, dreary.

And so it goes. Every morning, the man in monk’s robes makes his rounds, calling that The End is Nigh. Every night, the Float’s sky is dark.

After three days of this, rumors start making their way through a city on edge into the ears of the Shields:

- Someone has moved into the old Hands of Love temple, prophesying the arrival of a new god
- The witches have returned to the still inactive Lerntig Gate, now distributing salves and potions to relieve stress
- Word arrives from Cutter. The Crying Woods is gone. The forest is still there, but the Presence is no longer in the woods around the hamlet.
- Adventurers arriving at the Giggling Ghost through its famous portals are fewer and fewer in number. Those that do come report natural disasters and strange phenomenon occurring throughout the Wold.

"Honestly I'm more worried about the disappearance of the Crying Wood. Dragons are slain, Krakens vanquished, and armies dispersed. A hostile force, especially one with so much reason, no, need as this one, does not just vanish. Let's talk to the witches, and hope that this New God is somehow part of the issue. Gods great and small, I hope the Culverwood is alright. We should get information from the WLA and make sure they are informed as well." Sid broods over all of these troubling facts.

Three days of tense waiting does not do Stohp any favors. With little to do but sit around and stew in her own worries and fears she's had trouble sleeping and has not been taking care of herself well, leaving her ragged and tired.

Jumping into the conversation she corrects Bartomus, "They weren't trying to use the gate, they were the ones who sent Jasper to get us and warn us about the incoming evil." After a moment's thought she adds, "This all sounds like we should check it out, but it might take to long to visit each lead one by one. There's been no real danger to days; do we risk splitting up to cover more ground? If so I want to go see the crones"

Stock holds up the ring and says, "Anybody want this? I already got one pretty similar. As for what comes next, one direction is as good as another for me...although I had no love for that malevolent forest."

He sits down and gets out his carving equipment and fishes his carving out of his pack and goes back to work. After a while, he stands and heads to the workshop. In his hands are two small pieces which are hard to identify. In a few moments, he is back and walks over to Micah.

"Micah - you will remember that when I first joined the group, we were jumping right into a little scuffle with a rather large taur in the temple. As hard as I tried to impress you guys - and I feel like I held my own - you singlehandedly took down that big fellow. I always felt like you might have saved my life."

He holds out to Micah a small, intricately carved wooden hammer. It is about 6 inches long and bears an uncanny resemblance to the hammer that Micah used on Shredds. It is carved out of two pieces of oak that are affixed together via intricate joinery. On the face of the hammer (the part that does the damage) is carved an image of Shredds' face.

Dorbin says, "I don't trust those old crones down there. I don't know much about them, but I can see what I can find..."

During the wait, Dorbin does some research on the crones, if he can find anything about their history, who they are, their goals, etc. (Sage allows him one day study to answer any DC 30 knowledge check). If possible, the second day he will study to learn more about the history of the gate.

"Right, right," Bartomus nodded as Stohp explained the difference between the witches. "Still, I do think we need to talk to them and Stohp, I agree that we need to cover as many leads as possible - so I would say, let's work in pairs and see what we can find by dinner's start. Maybe meet up at the Ghost to compare what we learned?"

DM MikeK - Decisions, decisions
Wednesday November 22nd, 2017 9:28:41 PM

There's a lot going on in the Floating City, and the Shields debate whether to split up and investigate multiple leads, or stay together and check them out one at a time.

Meanwhile, Stock presents Micah a token of his appreciation.

And Dorbin does some researching. Of the crones, he can't find anything. They seem to have just shown up a couple days ago on the Trash Level, moved in next to Lerntig's Gate, and almost immediately began warning people of its imminent activation.

The Gate has a bit more. It has existed since the Float was found and populated, but hasn't been active in nearly 50 years. Made of the same material as the Float itself, the prevailing theory is it was built by the Teucri (an ancient race that built the Float) as some kind of door. In recent memory, that door has been one way. Nothing happened if one walked through the archway. But, on a rather regular basis, some poor confused soul would suddenly appear, from nearly anywhere on the Northern Continent.

Micah stares speechless at Stock's words and gift. He does not feel he did anything single handed nor anything other than what was necessary to stop that fiendish villain.

He reverently receives the hammer in both hands admiring it from all angles. He then carefully sets his new treasure aside and clasps both of the dwarf's wrists in his own, stares him in the eyes and softly says, "Thank you. Friend."

When time allows he carries it up to his room, displaying it prominently on a nook above his bed.

He calls the Shields together.

"All," he starts, [/b]"I think, given the portents and sudden changes, it would be unwise to split up. I agree with what some have said that the crones are worth another visit, while personally feeling that the rumored development at the Hands of Love is of significant concern. Thus, I propose the following: let's collective go visit the crones first. It should not be a long trip or conversation, then go to the temple to investigate. This latter trip could be brief, but I fear it could develop into more. I have meditated on what spells I may need for either contingency, so I am ready to go as soon as everyone else is."[/b]

Every night sid comes and brings her to HQ with the understanding that when things go down she will remain safe at HQ((She won't, she'll be at the Split Arrow either selling or giving away bows to her neighbors in needs be)). Sid reiterates, "We should go to the crones first, and then to the New God. We shouldn't split up. Splitting up in this situation only weakens us as a whole. I know I'm just a bowyer, but that's what I think. And..." Sid's voice becomes lower, "does anyone have a feather token? I really am worried about the Culverwood. You... you don't understand if you haven't lived there. It's not just a 'presence' or whatever, but a real live... being, entity, thing. Common doesn't have the right words for it. Let's just say that if the Cryingwood and the Culver are both gone it is very bad for us all."

Thursday November 23rd, 2017 10:40:46 AM

Dorbin shares what he has learned about the gate. He suggests that it was made by a race that is really unknown in the area and how the gate works is likely quite a bit beyond anyone's skill here. He says that the crones are likely charlatans, always making predictions, and who just happened to be right this one time.

The Shields resolve to stick together, and although Sid is really worried about the reported absence of the Crying Wood, decide to first see what the crones are up to.

The group descends to the Trash Level, and finds the trio have relocated into the room housing Lerntig's Gate. The archway itself appears to remain inactive. The group is bent over their cauldron, and look up at the group's entrance.

"Welcome, Silver Shields," the first one remarks. "We thank you for your service with the gate. How may we assist you?"

"Old Mothers," Sid says with concern, "Are you alright. I see you do not have chairs, should we get you chairs? Do you need something to eat? Have you used your daily unguents and ointments?" He gets a few chairs from a local establishment(no more than a silver per chair) and makes sure they are comfortable. "Old Mothers, please, are you hungry? I have some stew if you like? It is nice and hot and soft!" Sid's elfin vitality and honest sincerity are enough to convince any who look for a ruse.

DM MikeK - Witches of Maab
Saturday November 25th, 2017 10:24:53 AM

Sid, Micah, and Zanderallen choose the friendly approach, while Stock and Dorbin keep a suspicious watch. Stohp and Bartomus hang back a little and observe.

Sid's words of concern are at first met with suspicious looks, but as the witches come to believe his sincerity, they relax.
OOC - No bluff roll, so DM assumes Sid is sincere.

"We're not that old," chuckles the second.
"I am," retorts the first
"You want the young man to fetch you a chair?" teases the third.
"Only if its Terrion," teases back the first.
"Sweet Maab, let it go. That was YEARS ago," responds the third.

The pair appear quite ready to rehash old wounds, but Zanderallen's question interrupts them.
They give each other one final glare, and turn to the paladin.

"We are bonded with Maab, Man of Domi. If you are asking about the Gate, Maab sent me a dream to come here and guard it, and fetch you if something happened. She seems to think you are important to this city in the weeks ahead. As for the Wood and the Temple, we have not been given any information about them."
The second witch pipes up, "but we can find out."
The third chuckles. "Fifteen minutes. And we can find out about one or the other."
"Just one," agrees the first. "After that we'd need another day."

Stock is captivated by the firelight reflecting off a crude wooden shelf containing glass vial of various pretty colored liquids, and doesn't pick up on much else.

Dorbin's detect magic detects quite a bit of moderate magic - the witches robes, a necklace, some rings, a shelf full of potions, and a strong aura on the cauldron itself.

Bartomus notes that even though they are on the end of a dead end alley, several figures have approached, seen the party there, and faded back to the main street.

Upon hearing the whom the witches serve and how they came to be here, Micah feels confident they chose well to ally with rather than oppose these women.

After considering their offer, he responds, "I think the temple is a more immediate concern given its proximity. We would gladly wait and welcome any answer you may receive regarding this rumor about a new deity there."

He pauses to allow them time to process their request then continues, "Having said that, the developments in the Wood are similarly important and we would also welcome your guidance there, knowing that we would have to come back tomorrow to receive it."

After this second request he nods politely, awaiting a reply.

Agreeing with Micah's assessment of their offer Zander stands attentively, waiting to hear what the soothsayers have to say. Not incredibly familiar with Maab, he is at least comfortable that she is generally considered a benign power. "Any divination you could give us about the temple would be greatly helpful. The witches stare into the cauldron.

"Ones known to you return, prophesying the return of the Goddess of Prophesy. They are harmless fools..unless they are not. The veil remains."

The witches sigh in frustrated unison, and look up.
"Maab has spoken of this veil before. We think she cannot see beyond whatever is coming."
"Frustrating," echoes the second.
"Terrifying," offers the third. "She's always been able to see the future."

Dorbin is having trouble. The cauldron seems to be the magic item, rather than a type of one. And, he can't pin down the school of magic, as it seems to belong to all of them. It's a pretty unique little magical pot, it is.

Bartomus, Stohp, and Stock watch for the figures. None approach very closely, and it seems to be different people each time. They start coming down the alleyway, stop as they hear the sights and sounds from the Shields and witches, and then head back into the street.
