DM Mark - Mists
Tuesday October 31st, 2017 6:33:16 PM

As you rise and greet the new day, the air is cold and crisp. There is some discussion about how to return to Magpie Crossing. Lance, the farmer who’s family was saved by the Keepers of the Vale, needs to journey to Magpie Crossing and would like to travel with the party - both for the security they provide, and to share with the town their heroic deeds! The family work together to pack food and for the travellers.

All decide to journey back with Lance, except for Emrys and Velarin who will magically return. Emrys and Velarin say goodbye and vanish as a scent of evergreen fills the area as leaves get whipped up into the air by a sudden breeze. Then immediately the winds calm and peace returns ... Emrys and his travel companions are gone ... only a circle of mushrooms remain.
They instantly appearing at the Manor in Magpie Crossing.

The rest proceed with Lance in his wagon. Most choose to walk alongside the wagon for at least a time to warm up on the cold morning air. It’s a nice, clear day. The travel is pleasant and uneventful. This second group arrives that evening, tired from the long day’s travel. Your beds are a welcome sight!

_____________________________________________
Around midnight, the party is awakened by a groaning, stretching sound. It seems to come from everywhere at once for about 30 seconds, and it stops as suddenly as it began. You are all now wide awake - certainly an unnerving way to be awakened.

Then a scream is heard from outside, followed by another! You can hear a couple dogs barking.

(How long do each you take to respond? You are in your night clothes, or whatever you do or don’t sleep in. It is normally cold in the house as you rise.)

Depending on how long you take, there is either a pounding on your door or a guard rushes up to you. As you open the door, you can see that the cold streets are filled with a thick grey mist, reducing visibility to about 20’. These mists have an odd smell - they smell of a damp forest and have a slightly fungal smell as well. The moons shine through these mists, giving an eerie diffused glow to everything in town.

This guard’s eyes are wide with fear. “Come, come quickly. Some, something’s happened! It’s...just come on!” He runs, hoping you follow.

How long do you take, and do you follow him?

Barratore, awakened from his sleep bt the scream, bolts upright in bed. Was it a dream, the second scream answers his question. It had to be close and the fighter grabs his blade and bounds down the stairs and out the door. He scans back and forth outside the manor, hoping one of the others shows up to point our from where the screams came. Instead, though, he spies the guard heading towards him.
Barratore moves to him, closing the gap between them quickly. "What has happened?"

Barratore moves directly with the man, keeping just behind him and to his right. The Minotaur has his blade in his hand and is otherwise pretty undressed so was his rush to get outside.

A sneer forms across his face before he even opens his eyes. Emrys is at first irritated having been wakened from his much needed sleep from his warm, comfortable feathered bed. He listens again and hears a knocking downstairs. A sigh escapes his lips as he pulls his covers and linens aside. Still in his house robes, he grabs his cloak and sets his headband in place. He glances in a mirror for a quick survey of his appearance and heads down to the first floor. He is met by a cold breeze from an already open front door and so he wraps himself more tightly in his cloak. He notices the odd mists ... he wasn't expecting that ... it distracts him just for a moment until the he hears Barratore ask, "What has happened?"

"Yes, what madness is this ... at this ungodly hour?"

He hears the rapping on the door and the call to arms, Brom stands and grabs his sword and quiver. Sling the quiver over his shoulder while he moves down the stairs and out the door.

Brom is dressed in boxers, no shirt, wearing his belt, and boots.

"What in Gargul's name in is going on!" He says loudly coming out the door. Seeing the mist, Brom exclaims "By the gods, we're not home one day the Wold's goin' ta Koshe-Marr!"

Barratore grabs his blade and is out the door and following the guard before anyone else.

Baslim wastes no time and is out the door with naught but his sleeping clothes.

Velarin has his haversack and heads out the door in his bedclothes, right on Barratore’s heels.

Edson grabs his rings, armor and a weapon. He pulls his chain shirt on over his bed clothes as he goes.

Emrys, in his house robes, brings his cloak and headband. He is quite annoyed, asking what all the fuss is about.

Lanliss shrugs on some clothes and grabs a dagger, wasting no time.

Brom is quite the sight, heading out in his undershorts and boots, with his belt, quiver and sword. Thick, grey mists blanket the streets, reminding Brom of Koshe Marr. As you go, you note smell of a damp forest in the air - an odd smell here in Magpie Crossing. The foggy evening is clammy and chilly, especially for bare-chested barbarian.

This guard leads you a short distance. You don’t need sense motive to know he’s barely keeping his panic in check, trying hard to be professional around the heroes. As you arrive, you see a small crowd has gathered around a prone figure in the street. Most are in their bed clothes or hastily donned garments. In the darkness and torchlight, you recognize most. Three people run from the scene crying and hysterical. More filter in.

As the crown pulls back to let the heroes in, you see the prone figure iwears fine clothes, but is in a horrific state. While still in his clothes, the figure seems to have no skin - muscles, bones and entrails show here and there beneath the clothing. Though the wet thing glistens in the moonlight, strangely, there is no pool of blood.

A silent crowd looks expectantly from the heroes to the body and back again.

V will take the time to cast detect magic, looking at both the remaining fog, and the key.

(Casting Rose's Temperature Control. Target: Personal. Duration: 22 hours. Mimics the spell Endure Elements, along with several other abilities.)

Emrys is now more able to be in control of his own abilities and perceptions, now that he is no longer freezing to death. However nothing can prepare him for the gruesome scene they come upon. He has a very brief moment of hesitation before he moves up to the body to examine the remains. Having been a witness of countless grotesque and disturbing images, this one ranks right up there. He doesn't recall seeing such a controlled and methodical mutilation.

"Agreed Velarin. I know of many dark magiks and rituals so horrific that would cause the most resolute to fall into madness. I know of no such magik that would cause this."

"Yes, his body is still warm ... this happened only moments ago. If powerful magiks were used ... I should be able to see it still." Emrys casts a quick divination and begins to observe the area in and around the body. "Alas, poor Hezec Tiberius* Thameris, who did this to you?"

Brom moves about the outside edge of the crowd and scans for unusual watchers.

"Alright, let's check it out." He says to Barratore. "Edson, Lanliss we're gonna need you two. We're checkin' out the shop. Let's go." He tried to think of something with a bull in a china shop, but since the guy wasn't that kind of merchant, he couldn't make anything work; so, he dropped it.

Velarin and Emrys both cast Detect Magic. Highlight to display spoiler: {They are both overwhelmed by a darkness that shakes them to their core for a moment. This darkness seems to have a depth to it - no, not a depth exactly. More like a purpose or an end, but not with an intelligence or intent. It’s hard to pin down, but it does convey a sense of doom and despair. This is unlike anything either spell caster has ever encountered before. No particular school of magic seems associated with this.} The rest of the party sees them both momentarily stunned and reeling as they reach out unsteadily for support. This unnerves the crowd even more.

Several see the key, and Velarin pulls it out once he recovers only to find it is on a ring of keys.

Baslim inspects the body, and cutting the clothes reveals entrails. As he does so, one man faints and one of the guards throws up. Baslim cannot fathom what could do this to a man, but is certain the shock of such a transformation would kill anyone. He estimates this poor soul has been dead for 5 or 10 minutes.

No one is willing to approach to cover the body. A few more people arrive and some retreat back into the mist, leaving the grisly scene. One woman offers her cloak to Baslim,
“You can cover it with this, but I’ll not approach that thing.”

Edson and Barratore scan the crowd for anything unusual. Well, anything else unusual. There are a number of shocked on lookers. Most look horrified at what they see. It’s hard to tell some are calm or just in shock at what they’ve seen.

Brom is quick to activate Invisibility Purge, but nothing appears that was not there before. He looks for unseen watchers, though none of you can see more that 20 feet in the cursed mist. He tells the guards to move the crowd back, and they try to do so, but many ask for answers.

“What could do this?”
“Can you save him?”
“I had a premonition something bad was going to happen.”
“Is this going to happen to us?”
“Did this mist cause this?”

Lord Hmitri soon appears out of the mist with one of his guards, “Here now, what’s all this? And where is the blasted mist from? Oh my, that looks to be Hezec! By the gods, what happened?”

On bystander speaks up, swaying a bit as he speaks. “I seen ‘im come outta that door. Ah was lookin’ at ‘im. Then he, I dunno, he wasn’t there. An’ then he was again, afore he collapsed where ya see him now. Damnist thing I ever seen. An then this mist appears.” It is clear this person is drunk.

Emrys can't move ... as if frozen in place. With mouth agape and eyes wide open, the bloodwitch is awestruck by the most exquisite agony of terror he's ever known . "Yooou saw dark-ness .... I .. SEE .. IT .. STILL!"

Emrys writhes in tortured anguish as he falls backwards, onto the street, from his knelt position. However, to Emrys, he is no longer in the street. He is atop Lasher Castle in Plateau City; standing before a portal framed in green witchfire. A place his nightmares often return to when his thoughts go dark. The most profound moment of his life, where he stared into the looking glass and witnessed a living darkness staring back at him. The very moment where music and song lost all its meaning. A moment where joy, beauty and love can never exist. IT stared back at him with cold, steely eyes and severed the very fabric of his soul. "IT STARES AT ME STILL!"

The bloodwitch springs up to a sitting position and frantically crawls backwards from the mutilated body, only to be blocked by Barratore's leg; as if attempting to flee. Emrys' eyes dart about until he finally realizes he is back in the street again, free from Lasher Castle. Still quite startled, he returns to his feet. After catching his breath, he says, "Yes ... I've experienced something like this before ... but this is more profound! What I saw before was still contained ... in another place ... far away ... but now, i fear, Its found us ... and I know NOT what IT is!"

Emrys's reaction unnerves even the cold calm of the barbarian as he watches, without words, the bloodwitch's reaction to whatever he and V did.

It found us... is what stands out. He looks about knowing that the fear in the area just shot through the roof. Looking back down to Emrys, "Man, ya gotta get it together." He says. "Let's finish looking around, then head back and discuss it in a more private place, okay?"

Looking out at the frightened people of Magpie Crossing, Brom says "Listen up." He says getting the attention of those nearby. "I've face giants, dragons, sea monster, vampires, and demons. I've face them all, and they fell, and I'm here. What ever this is, I'll face it too. And when we find it. I'll end it." He says the last part placing the blade of the sword in his hand showing off the exquisite black blade.

Edson crypticallys says, “I dont know any beast that slins like this." A few onlookers look appraisingly at Edson, impressed with his arcane knowledge of things that slin.

Velarin comments on the sense of dread and darkness that hit him when he cast a simple detection spell. He thinks hard about this situation, but nothing here makes sense - the body, the mist. He says this is not like anything he’s experienced before.

By contrast, this does remind Emrys of something he has experienced before - something very bad. This triggers a dramatic reaction from the Bloodwitch. He writhes and crawls on the street, as he cries out, “Yooou saw dark-ness .... I .. SEE .. IT .. STILL! IT STARES AT ME STILL!” He crawls toward the body, and then stands, telling the tense crowd that he has experienced something like this before. Emrys says this, however, is far worse and uncontained.

Uncontained? The crowd does not take this well. Two men charge the body and begin beating it with staves, “Ahhhh, let’s destroy it! It's not gonna get me!” Lord Hmitri directs the guards to pull the men off the now bloody corpse. A few others run away screaming. Several people start crying. More people arrive, worried and asking questions.

Brom is unnerved at Emrys reaction as well, and tells him to keep it together. He tries to calm the crowd, telling him he’s faced worse. This does help calm the crowd somewhat, but one nervous onlooker points at Emrys, “But, but he said he's never faced anything this bad.”

Emrys regain is composure. Though he too ponders the current situation, he is not aware of any arcane forces that could do this. He settles down to cast Control Weather, calling up a moderate breeze and warms the area a bit in the process. Several there are impressed he has such powers to control the weather. The strange grey mist is blown away and the earthy, forest smell along with it.

The drunkerd who spoke earlier says, “Heh. Now make it rain weatherman.”

Baslim agrees that this is a good couse of action, hoping that the dispersal of the mist will dispel the fear. While the crowd does seem a bit relieved that the mist is gone, they look at the now bloody body. The heroes still feel a lingering sense of dread, and you can see from the fearful looks among the growing crowd that they feel it too. They look to the heroes for answers.

“Is that going to happen to us? Can you help us? Please?”

Could you also do us the favor of sending word to other areas by whatever means you have, to determine if anything like this is happening elsewhere? Hopefully our diviners can come up with a few answers for us today."

After the body has been removed, and the crowd disperses, "I believe we should return home. We should begin whatever investigation our diviners can do. I unfortunately, I have no spells of that nature in my repetoire, and there are very few that would assist in any case. A trip to the catacombs may be necessary to both sell our previous haul, and purchase some new gear I suggest we sleep some, possibly in shifts during the day today, and be on patrol in the streets after dark on the coming night." Once the group is ready, V returns to the manor with the others, begins getting his gear together and prepares his spells.

Barratore disagrees with V on the body and stops Hmitri, "we shall see it safe and sanctified m'lord. Help see the people home."

Barratore based the crowd to return to their homes and after they do he still wants a look in the shop. There is hopefully a reason why the mist and force struck here and the shop may have that answer

DM Mark - To slin or not to slin.
Tuesday November 7th, 2017 1:07:36 AM

Edson clarifies he meant to say “skins” instead of “slins.” This is a big disappointment to several there as there was already a buzz in the crowd, with a number of folks agreeing that “no beast slins like this.” (Edson will later hear the words “slin” creeping into the local dialect with occasional mention about vicious creatures that slin, or derogatory references to unscrupulous merchants that slin their customers.)

Lanliss and Velarin tell folks to stay safe, stay alert and lock their doors. Most folks admit they don’t even have locks for their doors, but will try to secure them another way.

Velarin tells them the Keepers of the Vale will be on patrol tonight. He asks Lord Hmitri to burn the body, and to send word to others towns to see if strange things have been happening elsewhere. The mage also suggests that the party rest during the day so they can be on patrol in the coming nights.

Emrys is a bit chagrined regarding his earlier outburst in front of the crowd.

Barratore follows Brom’s lead, and reassures the people there that they will defend them against any evil. Brom agrees with Barratore agreeing with Brom. Barratore tells Lord Hmitri that the Keepers will see to the body. They both want to check out the merchant’s place, once the crowd disperses. (This looks like a residence, not a shop.)

The good Shepheard Baslim says, "Our investigation should start at this building. Does anyone need to return to gather supplies or weapons?" Then he heads off to gather his arms and armor.

There are a number of protests as Lord Hmitri tells the townsfolk to return to their homes. In particular, there are some teenagers there that insist they’re not afraid and want to help the heroes! Lord Hmitri has to threaten a few with arrest, but they eventually all comply. Lord Hmitri will tell them that he agrees the body should be burned, and asks what the heroes plan to do with it?

Regarding Hezec’s house, the Lord says he should send a guard with them if they plan to enter this poor soul’s residence. You know, for appearances. He also promises to send word to the Pitchfork council the next day to ask if they’ve seen any strange goings on.

The night is clear and not nearly as cold, thanks to Emrys. It is dark, except for the lanterns the guards carry. A few people seem to be watching from their windows nearby.

Edson warns Lord Hmitri that given the foes the heroes have faced and may be facing now, the guards may be more of a hinderance than a help. Velarin suggests that the guards are there to ensure the law is upheld as they enter this merchant’s house. Though Velarin doesn’t think the threat came from this man’s house, he agrees it should still be checked.

Lanliss goes along with the others, but is feeling the lack of sleep.

Brom holds out his sword to Velarin, asking for him to light it up. Assuming the mage complies, Brom’s sword gleam in the cool night air as you approach the door. Barratore joins the others, ready to go in.

Two guards approach the door with the keys. They seem nervous as they fumble with the keys and unlock the door. Then they look at each other for a moment as if daring the other to be the first to enter. Brom and Barratore sense their hesitation and politely take the lead. The guards do not resist.

Brom steps into the house with his glowing sword, followed by the minotaur who has to crouch a bit. Emrys casts Dancing Lights sending four glowing spheres along the ceiling. Baslmin announces that he can bring full daylight to the entire residence!

Suddenly, there is a cry and two “thwips” as two crossbow bolts fly out of the darkness towards the minotaur! They bounce off his tough hide with no effect. Two terrified house servants shout, “We’re armed! Get back or we’ll shoot! (ugh..Gralia...help me reload this stupid thing. It’s hard.)”

You quickly disarm the two. They are distraught. And really, really scared. The two guards now feel bold enough to squeeze in and tell them to stand down! The servants, an older man and a young woman, seem mad with fear and must be wrestled to the ground. Which is not hard.

You will learn that their master left several minutes ago. Then they heard a scream. They saw a crowd. And a … body. A messed up body. And so they hid here. You really can’t get much more out of them beyond, “Doom, doom has come upon this household! Will we be next? When will something come and skin us for fun like they did our master? None of us are safe! Who can help us now if this can happen to the best of us?”

As their fear spills out, it seems to resonate with your own niggling feelings that a creeping doom is upon you.

The house is nice and tidy, and there is a large storeroom in the back. This was a relatively wealthy person. The guards join you searching the house, and they secure certain valuables. The storeroom has a number of unusual foodstuffs and spices, not no magic or living creatures. Lord Hmitri tells the servants they can stay there until this is sorted out. He says he will post a guard.

As you leave the place, Barratore scoops up the now wrapped body still seeping blood from the beating it took. He promises Lord Hmitri it be provided proper rights and a cremation ceremony after a further investigation. As you go through the streets, most of the houses seem to have a candle or a lamp burning. Many eyes watch you. In silence. None of this does anything to lift the creepy feeling of this night.

Do you retire to the Manor as Barratore suggested?
Do you patrol the streets as Velarin said you would?

Baslim objects to burning the body, proposing a proper funeral in a temple to Alemi. And he’d rather return to the manor.

There is more discussion about what to do with this body, and about where to go. Eventually, you all return to the Manor. The casters sleep, and some of the warriors go on patrol. The patrol is welcomed, and from time to time, those on patrol are offered a warm drink and some food. The body is now at the manor. It has an unpleasant smell of meat and blood and entrails exposed to air. You’re house servants are quite disturbed to have it around.

Later that day, there is an earthquake. No real damage - the people seem more shaken up than any of the structures. There was already a palpable sense of foreboding among the people, and this just made it worse. Some come to the Manor with questions, hoping the heroes have answers.

“What slinned him?”
“What’s being done about this? You owe us answers!”

He once knew a spell that would Calm Emotions, but he seems to have forgotten it … just another item on the already long list of things that perturb him.

The witch will take one last look of the body before the mortician arrives. He casts a spell upon the remains to keep it preserved before the poor grocer can finally be laid to rest. (Casting Gentle Repose on the body. Will not decay for the next 14 days.)

Emrys will also take a few personal items from the body … a button from his coat, a piece of jewelry, handkerchief or similar item, and a small lock of hair (if there is any present that is easily available).

“Maybe it wasn’t entirely a bad idea,” he says in an attempt to calm a few nerves. Of course, he could have done this at the mortician’s workshop. “Im sorry Barratore, I didn’t mean to bite.”

When the mortician arrives, he explains the spell he cast upon the body and requests for him to store the remains until further notice … until the family is notified and the investigation concludes … whatever is considered acceptable under local laws and traditions. He gives the mortician 5 gold for his trouble.

DM Mark - All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey.
Tuesday November 14th, 2017 1:25:18 AM

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey. The leaden sky reflects the dour mood in the town. Even the heroes feel an oppressive weight. Death has never caused this feeling in them before.

Barratore focuses on folk that seem to want to leave Magpie Crossing. The minotaur is concerned about this, and frustrated at not knowing what cause the events of the previous night, nor how to address them. He offers to accompany the family leaving, but they politely decline. They seem to not want anyone to know where they are going, thinking this gives them some level of safety. Odd.

Velarin goes over the treasure, ready to visit the Catacombs located within Maya’s Treasures. He will get there, and he finds the door locked. The normally gregarious Maya is very guarded, and cautiously lets him in and relocks the door. “Good day master Velarin. I s’pose you’re safe enough to let in. Shame about poor Hezec. I sell his spices here. I hope they’re not coming for me next.”

Amused by Emrys’ tirade, Brom later goes back to the scene of the merchant’s death and looks around. He sees some odd purple and brown mushrooms growing near the foundation, and here and there on the street - quite odd. These would have been easily missed in the dark of last night. He see the merchant’s servants peer out of the window. Should he interview them, they offer nothing more, and have never seem mushrooms like this before.

At the Manor, Lanliss urges caution, since it’s still not clear what killed that man.

Baslim is indeed able to purchase the material components he needs. There is an unusual sense of caution among the priests at the temple there.

Emrys preserves the body, and takes a few personal items from it as well.

There is no mortician, per se. Typically, either the church of Alemi or Domi is asked to inter the body. Occasionally, Lord Hmitri will direct the guard to address such things - which he proposed in this case, but the party stopped him and took charge of it. You now need to decide what you will do with it. Even preserved, no one wants to keep this weird dead body around for more than a few days.

You still have a creepy dead body in your house.

Barratore is not overbearing enough to force himself on the people as their guardian and so, while confused, he lets them go. There was something very different about the fear that had crept into the area. These people had known horrors before, creatures stalking through the night and striking without warning. No, there was a more insidious force at work, but to what end and what. Barratore had no answers and more than that, he had no means of getting them.

Barratore therefore decides to do what he does know how to do. Barratore heads to a local tavern and orders a massive amount of food, pretty much one or two of everything that the establishment has to offer. He pushes a couple tables up by the fire and drops in plenty of fuel. The fighter intends to try and turn at least this place

Emrys' coven enters the manor house, seven of his most stout-hearted. Angus directs them as Emrys' watches with a stern expression. "I chosen you seven to participate in this divination. You all have strength of will and been a witness to the horrors of life and death. I ask you now to steel your hearts, for this act we are about to begin will test even my own."

Several of the coven members carefully place the body on a stretcher and slowly carry the corpse to an exterior building behind the manor house. A building that Emrys has converted into a laboratory for potion making and ritual spellcraft. They place the body on a long table. At the head of the table is an open hearth, where a large cauldron is placed. There is no fire, but as soon as Emrys touches the cauldron, it heats up and begins to slowly start the water to boil. He then takes a pipe from the shelf and fills it with a strange tobacco. He touches his finger to it immediately begins to burn. A strange smoky scent fills the room ... Daemon's tongue furiously licks at the air, "Yesss, thatss the sstuff!" Emrys then takes a few puffs of the pipe and then passes it around for each coven member who also take a puff or two. Blatherskite the gnome takes more than a few puffs ... more like six. He exclaims it takes more to effect him.

More incense is burned and the smoke is waved around the body. As Angus pulls the cover away from the corpse, there are a few short gasps among the coven, but the pipe smoke seemingly has taken some of the edge off. They then gather around the large cauldron of bubbling water. Emrys takes the items he had gathered from the body and drops them in the cauldron. Then Emrys and every coven member begins to chant the same words of power. A ghostly weapon or claw appears in the hand of each of the casters. They then either plunge, slash or rake the weapons into their bodies. Spirit-like entities hover above them and then enter into Emrys. His eyes burst in a eerie green glow.

(Emrys, Angus and seven coven members cast Surrender Blood. Emrys loses 15 hitpoints, gains +3 caster level. Everyone else loses 5 hitpoints, each gain +1 caster level, then they transfer those bonus caster levels to Emrys. Emrys receives a +11 caster level boost on the next spell he casts.)

Emrys then casts his most powerful scrying spell and they all gaze into the bubbling cauldron. "Who or what killed poor Hezec Thameris ... OPEN OUR EYES ... SHOW US NOW!"

(Casting Greater Scrying. Cast time: standard action. Duration: 25 hours. Will Save: 26. Spell Penetration: 30, if necessary. Caster level is 25. I know this will be a difficult one ... hopefully the victim and his belongings help.)

Barratore is concerned about the odd behavior of the family leaving town. So he heads to the tavern. As the minotaur enters, he sees eyes shoot apprehensively in his direction, to be replaced by a bit of relief when they recognize him. There are few there, and the mostly keep to themselves. Then he eats himself silly.

Lanliss gets a bit of rest, preparing to patrol the streets later.

Emrys gathers his coven. After preparations, they boost his level as he casts Greater Scrying, asking “Who or what killed poor Hezec Thameris?” As they all peer into the cauldron, the steam rising from the surface begins to clear. All you see is the surface of the water - nothing more. But, all there are filled with a sense of foreboding - like something bad is coming or happening or going to happen. (Emrys may recall that Greater Scrying only works on creatures.)

Edson tries to get some rest. Paranoia begins to seep in, and he sets some traps before allowing himself to sleep.

Brom brings the mushrooms back for others to look at, and decides to sleep.

Over the next several days, reports come in from across the Cinnamon Valley concerning a number of strange things.

- People report hearing the same groaning, stretching sound at around midnight on the same night.
- There is a report of an entire farm and it’s inhabitants disappearing outside of Jarlwolf - where there once was a house and barn, there is not just blank dirt indicating where the buildings were.
- In Witchspawn, a very confused satyr names Abraxus was found wandering the streets. He speaks sylvan and claims to be a servant of Maab and has never heard of Witchspawn or the Cinnamon Valley.
- Undead just appeared in Merrydale. The guards there put them down, but it was very disturbing.
- Spellcasters report that divinations do not seem to reveal anything other than a dark sense of foreboding, or that a change is coming, and it’s bad.
- Some folks leave the towns and cities, hoping to find a place where they can protect themselves from the panic. Others move to the town or city for answers and security. Many people feel an irresistible urge be near their extended family, but cannot say why.
- A villager from Frog Hollow comes to town wearing a tin hat. You recognize him as the same person that sold such a hat Lanliss where you were all there. He calls himself the Key Master, and he is preaching about the end of the Wold. He begins to gather adherents.

After being informed of the spell results from his fellow casters, and the reports coming in from around the valley, he becomes more concerned than ever. "Whatever this is, it does not appear to be a creature or person. Something that could alter the mood of this many people in this big an area is unheard of, possibly on a deity level."

"How does an entire building just disappear with no trace? teleported? plane shifted?"

"A Satyr speaking Sylvan and thinking he is from elsewhere? almost as if possessed, or having switched bodies?"

"Apparently we will need to talk to this key master as well. Perhaps he knows something without knowing he knows something."

"I speak Sylvan, and can teleport to Witchspawn and back with a couple people. Anyone want to go with me? The rest of us should see if anything can be learned from the key master, and it might be a good idea to prevent him from assembling a gloom and doom cult."

If most of the group agrees with his thoughts, V will take a couple of people and teleport to Witchspawn to try and speak with the Satyr. The group has been there before, and a teleport shouldn't be a problem.

None of what’s happening makes sense. Various theories are suggested among the party to explain what’s going on. It’s determined that these strange mushrooms are not natural, but where are they from? Velarin’s Detect Magic only detect a creeping sense that something is not right.

Anxieties run high in town, and this leads to anger and suspicion. Someone accidently sets their house on fire trying to light enough candles to “keep the darkness at bay.” It is thankfully put out before spreading to others houses in town. Baslim tries to provide comfort, and this provies some sense of stability, keeping things to a mild panic.

Brom and Barratore eat and drink. This may not help the polulace, but it does help the tavern owner. At least he’s a little happier, and he tells you he feels safer with the two of you here in his place.

Velarin and Emrys decide to Teleport to Witchspawn to speak to this Satyr that was mentioned. Emrys teleports successfully to this casually seen location.

They find that Witchspawn is in a similar state of fear. There is great concern in this town with so many Bloodwitches that divination spells seem to not work. You are quickly recognized. In the face of many pleas that you tell the populace what is going on, you are led to Dulcet. The frail crone seems happy to see you. You ask about this Satyr, and find that she has had to protect the poor creature from the townsfolk that want to tear it apart. She will lead you to him, introducing him as Abraxus. She offers to translate if you wish.

He is a strong and powerfully built creature. He speak in Sylvan, “Greetings. I hight Abraxus. Who is't art thee? Can thee returneth me to mine own home?”
----------------------------------
Lanliss and Edson decide to approach this person in the Tin Hat. You remember the man from your visit to Frog Hollow. He’s not hard to find. He seems to have a gathered a following. As you approach him and his mob, he says,

“Ah, here are my friends. Surely you see the doom that is upon us. That's great, it starts with an earthquake. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn. World serves its own needs, don't mis-serve your own needs. So, what do you forsee coming? Will you join our band as we rally people to prepare, prepare for what’s coming? We need to be ready, to embrace the coming darkness. Only by embracing the darkness will we be saved. Come with us as we spread word of this that all may prepare!”

V and Emrys arrive in Witchspawn, and meet with Dulcet and Abraxus. "Thank you Dulcet for protecting him. He may be a clue to what is happening."

Speaking to Abraxus in Sylvan, "Greeting Abraxus. I am Velarin, and this is Emrys. We are the Keepers of the peace in these lands, and right now that peace has been upended. We may be able to return you to your home if we know more about where you come from. First, where is your home? what plane do you come from if not this one? You have told others that you do not know this place, how about yourself? Does your body look the same as it always has? are the types of people here the same type of people from whence you came? Are you familiar with an event that causes dread and fear in all the people in a very large area, or a power that can turn a person inside out in seconds? Velarin and Emrys speak with Abraxus the Satyr. Though he speaks Sylvan, it seems to be a strange dialect of it and is a bit hard to understand.

“Wh're am I from? I liveth beneath the Oak of Blessing, though in sooth I am oft at the court of the Queen, seeing to whatev'r the Lady needeth. Certes thee can pointeth me in the direction home. This lodging is strange and not to mine own liking. I doth not wanteth to offendeth thee, but th're is eke an ill humour h're.

“Thee speaketh of a ‘plane’. What is yond?”

“Mine own body? What is wrong with mine own body? T’is the people h're yond art strange.”

“Dread and fear? Nay, not until i cameth h're, wh'rev'r h're is - thy owneth people hath tried to killeth me!”

“A pow'r yond can turneth a p'rson inside-out in seconds? Thee speaketh foolishness!”

“Prithee, canst thee return me to mine home, for I would be quit of this place.”

Also, says that apart from this Satyr, she says she has asked any willing bloodwitches in Witchspawn to fan out across the Cinnamon Valley to try to bless and calm the populace. They are reporting that a madness as gripped some people. In some cases crops and animals are not being tended as families flee or huddle in fear.

--------------------------------
Meanwhile, back at the Manor Lanliss and Edson are outside try to talk to the man in the tin hat. Lanliss tells everyone you are there to save them. He gestures to his own tin hat, saying, “We need to know more fully what we are to prepare for, you have the knowledge.” Edson also asks, “" So what darkness are we preparing for?"

“Oh ho! I see you have kept the hat! I’m hoping that’s stopped the thoughts bein’ put into yer head - it did for me! But now I see more clearly. I hold the key!” He holds up a tarnished key on a chain. “Because of this key, I kin see now that this darkness is a blessing. It sharpens our wits and beckons us to what is to come. Embrace the darkness as we have. Follow our band that we may be saved when the Day of Closeness! The release is imminent!”

Emrys listens to every word the satyr says. He knows a great many languages, in fact he considers sylvan one of his native tongues. He recognizes the satyr's speech, he simply doesn't want to misinterpret what he says (Linguistics: 35).

In Sylvan, Emrys says, "I am very sorry, dear Abraxus that you had to experience this. We are all experiencing the same kind of strangeness. People are scared ... they act out of fear." When the satyr speaks of the Oak of Blessing and mentions the Queen and Lady ... suddenly a rush insight returns to him ... the thing he should have known, he now does! (Knowledge [Planes]: 36)

"Do you speak of the Queen ... Lady Maab? Queen of the Vales of Twilight ... the Lands of Rest? You and I are kin of sorts ... for I am a child of the Culverwood." Emrys takes the specimen jar from his pouch and presents it to Abraxus and asks, "Do you recognize these mushrooms ... are they the like the ones from your home?"

Edson asks to see the key that the strange man in the tin hat has. The man is about to comply when the Baslim steps forward and proclaims that the man is a liar, and that his followers should instead follow Baslim. The man puts his key back in his pocket. A few of his followers seem unsure, and about 10 of them looks ready to attack the cleric.

The guy in the Tin Hat stops thism and says, “Ah, this one speaks of light - his eyes remain closed. He cannot know the darkness as we do. We seen his like before. When the darkness falls, he’ll be swept aside with the rest, and we alone will be saved. Let’s go, and seek those that can understand and will embrace the darkness with us. There are many to be saved, many that need to know...”

As he leaves, most go with him, warily eyeing the cleric as they go. However, about a half dozen remain looking pleadingly at the cleric. One begins to cry.

Velarin and Emrys speak with Abraxus the Satyr in Witchspawn.

Dulcet, whispers out of the corner of her mouth to they pair, “Ot-na oo-tay ight-bray, if you know what I mean.” Her attempt to disguise what she said is probably unnecessary, as this creature does not seem to understand common.

Velarin asks who this queen is that Abraxus mentions. Suddenly, Emrys realizes what the muscular satyr was referring to and asks if it is Queen Maab. He replies, “how doth all here knoweth of Queen Maab? C'rtainly, yond is the Queen!”

Emrys shows the satyr the mushroom he brought. “Of course i knoweth about yond mushrump - t’is a Brown Slipp'r. I doth not knoweth of the Culv'rwood, and I doubteth yond we art kin. Yet, if 't be true t is near mine own home, showeth me this Culv'rwood. Prithee, just bid me how to returneth to mine own home.”

Velarin asks Dulcet to keep this satyr save until they can figure out how to return him to his home. Then he and Emrys Teleport back to Magpie Crossing without mishap.

Brom and Barratore patrol the streets. This does provide some comfort to and seem to bolster the locals. The town guard is very glad to have the two heroes walking the streets, and seem almost cheered by this. Almost.

Still, an oppressive feeling hangs in the air like a thick fog you cannot see. The skies are cloudy, but there is no rain.

(With some patrolling at night, and some being pestered during the day for help and advice, I’m a little confused. When do you all sleep/rest/patrol over the next day or so? Also, let me know if you're NOT done with the Satyr or the man in the tin hat.)

As Emrys speaks up, things fall into place for Velarin. Both spellcasters surmise the satyr named Abraxus must be from a planar place called the Valleys of Twilight where Maab, the Queen of the Fey, holds sway. If this is true, he is indeed far from home. Velarin asks Dulcet to keep this satyr safe until they can figure out how to return him to his home. Then he and Emrys Teleport back to Magpie Crossing without mishap.

About that same time in Magpie Crossing, a mad man in a tin hat is leading his flock away from the Manor telling them to pay no attention to the lost, as they may not understand the darkness until it takes them. A few stay, looking pleadingly at Baslim who spoke of turning toward the light. Baslim then leads those few in prayer. (Nice prayer!)

Edson and Lanliss discussing wresting whatever key he seemed to have from the man, though they decide to let him go for now. (I’m happy to let you catch up with this guy the next day, but I wanted to move the game ahead for everyone.)

All are startled as Emrys and Velarin suddenly *POP* back into town, just outside the Manor where the party usually resides. It is in the afternoon.

Later, in the wee hours of the night (about 2 AM) Brom, Barratore, and Velarin are on patrol. The rest of the party is in bed, and are awakened by a loud BOOM! (Forgive me if I got wrong who is where. Let me know if I need to adjust.)

Brom, Barratore, and Velarin on patrol see a glow on the other side of town! Fire! They are about 2 rounds away at a dead run.

Edson, Lanliss, Baslim and Emrys are in the Manor in their sleeping clothes and wake to see an odd glow in their south-facing windows - there is a fire nearby! It takes them a round to shake their sleep and gather their wits. They hear shrieks and cries very close by!

Emrys lands on a nearby roof and sheds his raven form.

Edson responds to the salamander’s attack and rushes to inflict 10 damage on the nearest salamander. (single attack since you moved 10’.) He yells, “They’re salamanders!”

(Brom - sorry I got your movement wrong. I changed where Brom is.)

Velarin casts Fly and rises 30’ into the air. He shouts, "It appears these are salamanders from the elemental plane of fire. They believe we have brought them here unwillingly by opening a gate between our planes. They are displeased with this, and intend to burn everything to the ground."

"Emrys! Baslim! I can do nothing to put out fire, just create it! can either of you stop the burning?”

"I believe i can return them to their plane if someone can quickly negotiate a momentary truce in the hostilities until I get there."

This alerts and alarms the locals in the area.

The salamander at the base of the house Emrys in on charges forward and skewers one of the townsfolk. The man shouts for his family to head to the river. As he turns to go that salamander strikes again, laughing, and kills the man. His family screams and plunge into the river with a splash! “Papa, no!”

That salamander laughs a crackling laugh standing over the dead man. In Ignan - Highlight to display spoiler: {”This is more fun than I thought! We’ll eat well tonight boys! Bring out the others!”} Another replies Highlight to display spoiler: {”It is long since I feasted on man-flesh.”}

Many more salamanders emerge from the fire and smoke, and along with them some huge creatures looks like a living, mobile bonfire, tongues of flame reaching out in search of things to burn. Fire licks up the side of the residence Emrys has landed on. The fire consuming the bakery grows.

Knowledge Planes DC 15 - Highlight to display spoiler: {These huge creatures are fire elementals of some sort.}

The salamander facing Edson (AC 21 without armor?) attacks him, missing all three times. Another runs up to him.

A salamander attacks Lanliss (AC 22 without armor?) and also misses.

Shouts of “Fire! Fire!” can be heard from the locals as word spreads. The lingering sense of dread has been replaced by an urgency to deal with this current emergency. Some guards arrive as well. Some a calling for a bucket brigade to put out the fire, others are worried there is a bigger threat.

Anyone within 50’ of the fire/smoke area takes 1 point of non-lethal damage per round from the heat.

(Knowledge [Planes]: 36)

Responding to the others calling them Salamanders, Emrys only takes the time to say, "Yes, I know!"

Emrys moves to the edge of the roof (V-9) and notices the Salamander who set fire to the residence. It looks like he is moving away from the group to go cause trouble elsewhere. He can't let this happen. He speaks eldritch words of power and a burst and crackle of green witchfire envelops the outsider!

(Casting Banish Immortal on the Salamander(R-11). This spell is a Woldian spell, originally for the Soul Seeker, but it is now a Bloodwitch spell as well. I assume the bloodwitch benefits from what a Soul Seeker is granted by the spell's description ... which is a DC bonus equal to half the caster's level +7. Therefore the Salamander needs to make a Will Save: 32 vs. being banished to it's home plane.)

Emrys hopes the transition of being torn between the Living Wold and the Plane of Fire is as painful as possible.

Lanliss begins to see all the Salamanders appearing and hears a shouts of a man.
Things are really going out of hand this time, he thinks to himself.
He looks for a spot further a head and runs to it while shouting, Hey Fire Lizards !
Why don't you fight me !
Hopefully this distraction will work, Lanliss thinks.
He steadies his dagger for a defensive measure, waiting for the salamanders to bite him.

Lanliss takes a total defensive action.
Lanliss moves to AN 5.

As more fire creatures emerge from the fire, the party steps up their game!

Emrys sees the salamander below him gloating over the man he just killed. With a flash of green witchfire, he banishes the creature back to his native plane. (I’ll allow the +7 for this casting only. This spell is being edited to allow +¼ bloodwitch levels, so next time your adds will be +3.)

Lanliss moves forward 20’, though doing so provokes three attacks of opportunity. Who knew those fire elementals had a 15’ reach? A salamander misses, as does an elemental. But one fire elemental hits him 22 damage.

Velarin has had enough! He unleashes Chain Lightning. It arcs to one, and then across to 8 others! Electric energy crackles through them as they go momentarily rigid. Some save, most do not.

Brom pushes forward and slams his sword into the nearest salamander. Barratore, not to be outdone, moves forward and drops the salamander Brom struck.

Edson strikes out at one of the salamanders in front of him.

Baslim watches quietly. A salamander jabs at the hapless cleric for 15 damage. Then he hits with his tail for 7 more damage.

The two salamanders on Edson hit with their burning metal spears four times for a total of 43 damage plus 15 fire damage for a total of 58.

The elemental near Lanliss strikes out at him twice, hitting once for 27 points of fire damage. Another elemental charges a building, slamming into it and setting it on fire.

Another elemental rushes forward and strikes a critical blow against Emrys for 42 damage!

Finally, one a salamander moves up to strike at Barratore and misses 3 times. Then an elemental advances on the minotaur, but it also misses.

Anyone within 50’ of the fire/smoke area takes 1 point of non-lethal damage per round from the heat.

(ooc: think V should be undamaged. He has yet to get within 50' of the fire)

Relatively unconcerned about Brom and Barratore, V targets S4 with another chain lightning. He makes a note to himself that they will need to hunt down the elemental that ran off towards the river and is now nowhere to be seen. (Damage to S4 and every bad guy within 30' of him is 49 on a fail, and 24 on a save. reflex Save is 25 for S4, and 23 for the rest. SR 27 if needed)

Emrys get walloped by the fiery behemoth and he stumbles backwards in a moment of agony (5-ft step to U9). He turns to face the giant with gritted teeth and furious eyes.

(I'm not sure how to read these angled squares ... I'm unsure if I'm 15 or 20-ft away and if the added elevation of the roof is adding to it. Sounds like an algebra problem.)
