"Was what happened to the golem also an illusion?"

DM RobC - "Mack, what did you just do to me?"
Wednesday November 1st, 2017 6:19:59 AM

The party wonder what is going on. Was it just an illusion? Has the gas affected their minds?

Amidst the confusion ... darkness falls. Utter and complete darkness. Magical lights go out, flames extinguish, and even those with Darkvision cannot see.

It's a little disconcerting.

Then in the darkness a small flicker of light. Something like a firefly flying slowly before the group.

The size of the light grows and grows but the intensity of the light stays soft and warm.

A humanoid figure emerges from the light. Literally steps out of it one foot at a time. The party can see her now: a stunningly beautiful woman with fair skin wearing a crown of twigs. She wears a long emerald green dress, and has many small pearls in her silvery hair.

The light emanates from her and you can even feel its warmth on your skin.

All signs of the golems and gas have vanished, and Squeaver and Khan have lowered their heads in submission.

"My friends. My Wardens. The Tree needs you" she speaks with a softness to her voice the likes you have never heard.

Ladies and Gentlemen: The Fey Queen, Maab.

'Osul bows deeply. Imagine a reflexive reaction, but played out over a time frame that would render moot the entire reason for a reflex in the first place.
His eyes do not leave her, though. It is not intended as a challenge -- he simply cannot do otherwise.

My friends. is both nice and generous in equal parts. My Wardens. begs questions. The Tree needs you. We have a role to play, but the tree needs more than just us. It's leaving The Culverwood in the first place seems to indicate this.

"Your people here in the Plateau City speak highly of you and your caring nature, and do their best to emulate this in their own way. Forgive me, but I would have thought that you might have delegated this visit to an Emissary, or a functionary of the Court?"

Atlas is struck with a feeling that he has not experienced before. Like Mack, he has never cared much for royalty, but this is different. He wonders if maybe she has enchanted him. If so, he isn't bothered by it. He quickly tucks away his weapons as he takes a knee and bows his head before her.

Her words have just as much impact as her presence, so he looks back up to address her with the rest of the group. "My sword is yours. How may we be of service to you and the Tree?"

Elyngael kneels beside Khan, trusting his instincts, she dips her head "My Lady".

DM RobC - "But they never Sent to us. Right?"
Thursday November 2nd, 2017 7:38:06 AM

The party show Maab due respect with a few questioing what they can do to serve. "Please, there is no need to kneel. Stand that we may speak openly"

Neshi and Armand pay silent reverance, while Elyngael simply addresses the Queen of the Fey as "My Lady"

Armand knows that Maab helped create all the flora and fauna of the Wold. She is the Queen of Fey and the Ruler of the Vales of Twilight. She is one of the most powerful of the Immortal Powers as well. If Alemi was to look for a Power to join the ranks of the Gods, Maab would be near the top of the list.

Beordir is a little confused. If the Tree is in trouble, why weren't the party contacted? It's not like the party didn't leave the means to.

Mack and Atlas how they can serve, whilst Osul asks why Maab herself would approach the party.

"Something is affecting my Tree and it's surrounds. There are changes happening across the Wold and I can't explain what or why. All I can do is try and care for my children while we find out what is going on" There is a flash of confusion across her face, but mainly concern.

Her expression turns to a smile once more as she looks to Osul "You have guarded my Tree, protected it, and cared for those around it. You are my envoys. If anyone can care for my Tree it is the Tree Wardens"

With the hint of a grin Maab looks to Beordir "Perhaps you were sent for but were unable to hear it? The language of nature can be hard to understand" She looks to Mack as she finishes. "But perhaps we can fix this"

Maab reaches out and lightly carresses Mack's head. In an instant he is filled not just with the knowledge of what it is like to be tree, but not just one tree: what it is like to be several different types of trees for entire lifetimes. From seed through sapling all the way into a mature specimen and into eventual decay or conflagration and then the cycle repeats itself. He understands the differences between oak, maple, sycamore and cedar among other species.

The party notice Mack's hair takes on a green tinge, as the fur along Squeaver's spine turns green.

"I hope I have not overwhelmed you." She says to Mack "I saw your dreams pass through the Vale. I understand you would become a shepherd and friend to all plants so I have imparted to you my blessing. Use it in good faith to do good and protect all of my children"

With a deep breath Maab speaks to the party as a whole. "Time is precious. We cannot delay here any further. Gather around and we shall leave"

DM RobC - "Let the journey begin!"
Friday November 3rd, 2017 8:10:49 AM

Osul assumes that leaving is going to be a bit more complicaated than simply walking out of the tunnel.

Talya is thrown but goes with the flow. If this god-like person says its time to leave, that's good enough for her!

Mack and Squeaver are a little dumbfounded but neither seems to fussed by their new hair colors. Atlas is itching to make some comments about it but decides to save it for another time.

Beordir anticipates the travel to place some stress on the party, and suggests everyone try to relax.

Armand suspects it will be less eventful than the way here. He hopes. If the fey are tricky, perhaps their Queen is too?

Neshi is confused as to what this tree is all about. How is one tree worth all this attention? Mack tries to sum it up, but even his description does not do it justice. The Tree of Parting is considered by many to be one of the Wonders of the Wold. It is known far and wide for its hospitality as well as the incredible beauty of its views in all directions.

Elyngael is happy to venture with the party to answer Maab's call. She looks at Elyngael with a warm smile "Child, I ask ALL of you. Since you were young you have cared for my children. Every plant you tended, every animal you cared for in the grove. All your deeds have brought you here"

"Now then" There is no pomp or ceremony. Maab simply claps her hands above her head and produces a blinding burst of light. Instantly the party find themselves standing atop a small hill overlooking the Tree.

Despite it being morning the sky is particularly cloudy and dark. It's like the area is under huge storm clouds but there is no rain or wind. Even the grass around you is still.

Just under a mile away the Tree can clearly be seen. It's boughs reach higher than any castle spire you have ever seen. Its great canopy stretches out and seems to help support the sky itself.

"I will leave you here" Maab declares "There is much for me to look into across the Wold and time may be against us. Farewell, Wardens. Until we meet again"

With that brief farewell Maab turns back into a firefly and zips off into the distance.

SUPER excited to be back at The Tree, I still look quickly to make sure Squeaver is here. But then I also wonder about Gypsy, and the other's mounts. "I'm not sure what we can do at this point, but I'm concerned about those we've left behind."

Atlas takes a deep breath, lets it out, and smiles. All thoughts of the city and Maab vanish almost instantly. "It is good to be home. Neshi, Talya, El, welcome to The Tree of Parting. We fondly just call it the Tree. We have lodging here with plenty of room for the three of you, so make yourself at home when we get there. I know we are still all new to each other, but you'll find the people here are very welcoming. We'll explain everything else as we walk."

Atlas looks about the group and gestures towards the Tree. "Shall we?"

As they walk Atlas explains things to the new folks, pulling in others to help fill in all the things he has left out. He does at one point step to the side and speak with Mack for a moment about the animals they left behind. "They'll be taken care of Mack, trust in Maab."

In spite of himself, Beordir tenses up as Queen Maab turns away from Elyngael. He doesn't even have time to discipline himself into breathing before the handclap is silenced and they have arrived. Beordir relaxes visibly, then looks around surprised.

They are back at the Tree of Parting. The birds are chirping, the leaves are singing in the wind and the sky is blue. "That was fast." But she is already gone. Beordir stands gawking mind whirling about the amazing power he has been a witness to.

Atlas orients the newcomers. They are even further out of place, so Beordir takes a couple of cleansing breaths, then replies, "I need to go see someone about a Sending scroll. I gave it to the steward of our house. Queen Maab seemed insistent that there is trouble. I wonder if he knows anything."

Beordir hitches his pack up and starts walking toward the Tree of Parting.

Over 500ft tall at the branches where the uppermost dwellers make their home, another 200 ft above that, only eagle and squirrels dare to tread. It's branches spread over a 1/4 mile diameter from tip to tip. The trunk it'self is well over 300 ft thick. The tree is magical, and as such storms barely make the branches shake.

Mack: is tickled to be back home, but the storm clouds give him pause, he tries to help 'Osul

Atlas: too is glad to be back and excited to explain the place to their new friends.

Boerdir is a bit disconcerted at the suddenness of their arrival. not to mention up close and personal with an immotal fey. he's ready to get to the tree and find out what is going on.

‘Osul: proudly tells the newcomers about the grand dimensions of the Tree of Parting.

Yurr'Neshi is a bit unsettled about the trip but speaks the true word about the tree and the storm clouds.

Armand: thinks of the significants of the storm clouds, but there are many. everything from a sign of changing the weather, a mourning god, and eldritch power laying claim to an area, the end of a season or the end of the world. more info is needed.

Elyngael scans the area, quiet, stormy, with a huge fricking tree a-ways away.

Talya?

The treck to the tree is uneventful. strangely so. birds, small animals, even the bugs seem to have went to ground. Hiding? or have they abandoned the area? Osul beats the rest of the party to the tree by a good margin, and it seems like everyone has closed up shop for the day. piles of leaves mound in front of every door and the bustling little community seems strangely subdued. You see Hiflanyl Ilyndrathyl still manning the lifts and he waves to the party as they approach, lowing the bridge to let them up. tells the party that everyone is meeting up at the Triple T and that things have gotten really weird the last few days.

" the strangest thing so far is the leaves, we can't keep them from piling around the doors. Lilliput went into a trance about an hour ago and said that you all would be back within the hour...I'll be dipped in buttermilk if you didn't show up. Elyngael calms her companion, his keen animal senses perhaps detect things that you cannot.

Armand: comments on the leaves, but he can see it himself, in front of every door is a large pile of fall leaves. You notice something else, some of the alternate paths from one level of the tree to another are gone. The layout of the tree is subtly different, almost as if the tree itself has moved.

Mack: is ready to find out some answers.

Yurr'Neshi no special insights, but one. If you had to describe the feeling of the area..the zeitgeist if you will...it's dread, not of the people, but of the area...the world.

Talya being new to the area she just follows along.

Atlas: true to his humor atlas urges the crew to get to the Tree Top Tavern.

Boerdir contemplates the sky and gets nothing. storms happen all the time. but why does this one seem so ominous?

‘Osul: arrives at the Triple T. most of the adults are inside, the kids outside are playing in a leaf dust devil...but in your air elemental form you do not sense the wind for this kind of thing. it's curious...once in human form...it still looks like they are playing in a dust devil of leaves.

The party makes their way to the main lift, An elevator system designed by Hiflanyl Ilyndrathyl many years ago. it works so smoothly that only now do the veterans realize that it seems to be off. where normally it mates perfectly with each of the levels it's now off a bit, and at the Triple T, you would have had to step across an 18" gap. fortunately one of the adolescents, Bobby you think. stationed by the exit slides a piece of planking across the gap for your exit.

he speaks. You're back! cool Liliput was right! Sorry about the lift, we can normally keep it tuned to the growth and movements of the tree, but the last day or so have been crazy. Everybody's in the bar talking if you want to go on in.

walking towards the entrance to the bar you see a group of young kids playing in what seems to be dust devil composed of leaves. One of the children, a little girl, goes to catch one of the leaves..then jerks her hand back like she's been stung. Within a step or two, the scene goes from happy kids playing to scared kids trapped in a whirling vortex of leaves.

Armand knows little about leaves, so he ignores them and opens the door to the Triple T.

Mack: Knows all about leaves and attempts communication The replies he gets are the green equivalent of hearing a man with a head wound read random words out of a dictionary. the beings are panicked, confused and it's pretty obvious that they don't really know what's going on or really..what they are doing. you get a vague impression that they were trying to ease their anxiety by playing with the kids. something that these beings are not known to do, but then the act of exposing themselves to humans, even young humans only increased their anxiety. Like I said chaos.

Atlas: gets ready to bag some leaves if the halfling can't diffuse the situation.

‘Osul: Yeah! save the kids, sweep up the leaves....what?

Boerdir reinforces Atlas.

Elyngael discerns the secret hidden nature of the leaves quite easily. OOC: it's okay, if you can post tomorrow what I post tonight, it all works out.

Yurr'Neshi the Triple T's doorway is actually taller than human average. not ducking required.

Talya prepares for attack from the...leaves.

when Mack speaks, the swirling leaves leave the children and begin swirling around Mack. Almost as if they were desperate for some form of communication. When those leaves move suddenly 10 or 20 times that amount fall from the brances and begin to dance and whirl around him! the kids for the moment are in the clear.

Mack: It seems as though a million different voices hum in your ear. each trying to say something, but each talking over the other one.

Atlas: with the whirl of leaf creatures you cannot see Mack or the rest of the tree as you are caught up in the whirlwind of leaves.

Armand: the kids are more the willing to go, and cling tightly to you as you carry them inside

‘Osul: as many leaves as this seems to be, it is not even a tenth of a percentage of the leaves this tree holds, but its enough to make a veritable wall of leaves outside the triple T.

Boerdir through the flurry of leaves you lead the kids inside.

Elyngael the leaves avoid you as you heard kids inside.

Yurr'Neshi the tavern is packed with people, halflings, a half-orc, many humans, a dwarf or two, some gnomes and some elves. Singles, Families, some drovers and some not readily identifiable. with the commotion going on outside, many are moving to look out the door.

Talyayou get the remainder of the kids inside, the small girl as a sting on her hand, right in the palm where she grabbed the thing. while it was obviously a sting, it's bleeding freely and does not seem to be swelling.

the leaf creatures swirl around Mack in a violent cacophony of chittering voices and screeches, the swirling gets more vigorous, the voices louder and louder until there is a "boom" and the sound of wood cracking on a massive scale from down below. the leaves pause for a breathless instant and then all at once scramble madly back into the boughs from which they came.

There is a pause, with the noise and the swirling leaves gone, it's almost peaceful for a moment. then the entire tree begins to shake violently (DC 13 vs reflex or fall prone.) someone screams "Earthquake" but then Miles, who kept his head and his footing says "NO! look there and points downward towards the lower levels.

On the ground, even from as far up as you are, it seems some people fell from the tree when it shook, they don't look injured but amongst them there seem to be trees walking.

If so, I'll need a quick ride down!" Atlas points at the same trees Miles is pointing at to indicate what he's talking about, then prepares to make as quick a decent as possible. Then a thought comes to him...

"Anyone have a Feather Fall spell to help me get down quicker? We cannot let them hurt the tree!" Atlas is a bit anxious. If something has the ability to shake the tree then it certainly has the ability to crush the life out of him in a heartbeat. Still, it's the only thing he can think of to do at the moment. He steps out of the doorway and replies, "I can get you and me down and 3 other people. I think we'll want druids to come with us."

Not waiting for Atlas to confirm his wishes, Beordir heads for the railing around the walk way they're on and steps through to the outer edge. "You'll need to get real close, preferably within touching distance."

Beordir reaches up to the necklace around his neck and starts reading it's emanations. It's subtle and hard to feel, but Beordir's mind is clear and he feels that spell's resonance.

Armand: bemoans life. remember if it's not horribly terribly difficult you are doing it wrong. Boolia replies to you I've lived here at the tree for 25 years, I've never seen anything like this happen

‘Osul: is taken by surprise with the shaking, so he's careful when getting back to his feet.

Elyngael it wasn't something striking the tree, it was the tree itself moving, the shaking is the tree moving to react to the walking trees down below. Appently when something this big moves it makes some strange noises.

Yurr'Neshi?

Talya gets with the feather falling. it's strange though you feel the spell cast, you feel the magic flow, but there is a quickening to it. instead of the normall glow that usualy occurs when you cast the magic is brigher more powerful, but also more taxing.

With the spells cast, the crew make it down to the bottom, along with Miles and several of the Tree Militia.
Ciyridil had potions of FF in abundance. just for needs such as this.

On the ground floor, it's chaotic. You thought that the tree was shaking because it was moving, but tremors shake the ground at regular intervals that have nothing to do with the tree. The Walking trees turn out to be just that! tree-shaped giants with leaves for hair, barklike skin and faces of wood. roll DC 7 vs some applicable skill or INT to figure out what they are....or guess if you want. they are moving randomly. some are trying to heard the folks on the ground, some merely stand and stare blankly. a few move as though they aren't aware of what is before them...or are on a different plane of existence. a couple of those have been knocked over, you are guessing the TOP, while a few more of them look about to walk over anything in their path.

Not really waiting for the answer, he mutters some arcane words close to his chest, with his eyes momentarily closed. When he opens them, the world is overlaid with new colors representing the enchanted auras around him. Beordir turns to look toward the nearest Treant.

Mack: ignores the Treants and instead pitches in to help get the tree dwellers to safety.

Atlas: throws in to help as well.

Armand: strangely for having fallen over 30' in some cases, and more than that in others, except for some of them being freaked out, there are no injuries to speak of. All are very motivated to get back into the tree though.

‘Osul: You become the wind more completely than you ever have. you are one with the air. and the air is chaotic. As you rise above and send your senses outward you see that not far off, just over the nap of the earth, the weather is going from generally gloomy and overcast to really, really bad. You see funnel clouds lightening, and the rain that is falling is pushing the wind in such a way as you are going to have some gale force winds in less than 5 min.

Boerdir when you cast the spell the world explodes in a wash of color, the Treants look like hollow husks, the sky is blinding with the amount of magic suffused within it and the Tree of Parting is flashing in magic. three long flashes, three short flashes, three long flashes....over and over again.

Elyngael calls out to her companions what she heard from the Treants

Yurr'Neshi stands stunned at the sight of the Tree of Parting moving! he is speechless and stationary.

Talya Between you zipping and good coordination with the people in the tree harnesses are lowered down and the fallen are quickly pulled up.

Mack: casts his spell, the force of it is stronger, almost as if it were air that was suddenly released into a vacuum. the spell strips reality as you know it from you and suddenly you are touching the spirit of being that is ancient, powerful, benevolent and much much greater than your mortal mind. its senses are yours but the fit is off, it is both more limited and much greater than your senses at the same time. your awareness is consumed with the Tree nothing else exists. The sense of this being begins to coalesce into a form. it's humanoid, maybe elvish? but made of wood. It smiles at you and you feel warm inside.

Hello Remack...Mack...I am pleased that it was you who contacted me, I have watched since you came to live on me and of all the creatures that have passed beneath my branches you have been by far the most surprising. it is good that I get to talk to you .

A great Change is coming to the Wold, I know not what it is, but it will change this world profoundly, I fear for my charges in this time of peril, I fear for my Children.

I am old Mack, I have seen the world turn many times, and I think that this will be the last. I will not bloom again come spring, but I have produced my progeny, I was born of magic and sorrow, but the gods have seen fit to let me continue my line, When this change is over, if any survive, care for my seeds, plant them and nurture them in my shadow, for I would have a grove of my kind grow up here, and I need my Wardens and my dwellers to keep them safe, at least until they can keep you safe.

Atlas: is told that Mona is in her shop, trying to make sense of the omens she's getting.

Armand: shivers at the thought of undead treants, but are they? or has the chaos of this dark time merely destroyed their minds?

‘Osul: The closer you get to the storm the more it draws you in. the power, the ferocity the wild magic...its..intoxicating. Save VS Will or lose control before you can make your way back to the ToP. If you fail you are trapped in the storm until your spell ends.

Boerdir gets back up into the tree to find Mack touching the tree his eyes closed, vines from the tree have grown about him to shelter him from the coming storm.

Elyngael (Whoops sorry bout that, thought you were talking about the Tree of Parting not the Treants. Yes you are on a Treant, you can see the outskirts of the storm coming, it does not look good. Do you go back up into the Tree of parting or do you continue to ride the mindless Trent? ).

Yurr'Neshi This storm is not natural, but it's not a spell either. it's a symptom of something big happening.

Talya shares her insights with the rest of the group

Once everyone is back up in the tree the storm hits. Even the Tree of parting rocks in this wind. wagons are flipped over the edge of the tree, roofed houses have their roofs torn off and everyone has to lay on the floor, because the shaking is so bad you cannot keep your feet, conversation is almost impossible due to the roar of the wind and visibiltiy is almost zero due to the torrents of rain pouring down. it's almost like the world is ending.

DM RobC - "This takes the cake!"
Monday November 20th, 2017 6:04:30 AM

The rest of the party head indoors.

Talya finds a quite spot to do a little reading.

Armand, Atlas and Neshi head to the tavern. If you're going to be indoors during a storm, might as well be a place with some booze. Others have the same idead. There are sounds of nervous laughter from within the tavern. People trying to act brave and talk of this storm as if it were something normal.

Elyngael and Khan now make for the safety of the Tree. There is nothing to be gained by standing in the rain. Nothing to be gained but a cold that is.

Mack feels quite protected from the storm. He can feel the trickle of rain run down his face and feels the cold air on his cheek, but it isn't for long. The vines recede to allow him to move once more. Both he and Beordir notice there is crackly sound to the way the vines wrap back against the trunk of the Tree. It's like the sound of ice snap-freezing. The vines have an almost rock-like consistency and feel to them.

Inside and out the Tree is undergoing a change. Creaking and groaning noises and the wood expands and contract in different places. The changes are fairly consistant. Everything is hardening and going cold. The natural feel, look and smell of the Tree is completely different now. It feels ... cold.

The temperate inside the Tree is certainly getting colder. You can see your breath turn into mist as you exhale.

Meanwhile Osul is outside, moving with the clouds and wind. It's tough but he is still able - barely - to control his direction. Things are getting more violent. The wind undergoes swift changes in direction. The density of the clouds thickens. Above, Osul can see several clouds take the form of humanoids. Large, faceless, shadowy humanoids riding the storm and heading directly towards the Tree.

DM RobC - Osul's not here man
Tuesday November 21st, 2017 6:07:26 AM

Atlas and Mack look to the sky to try and find Osul. They only see the rain.

Well, with his exceptional sight Mack does see something past the rain. Three very large shadowy figures, flying amidst the clouds and headed right this way. They'll likely be at the Tree in the next 30 seconds. Shadowy figures are almost never good.

Armand tries to calm people down and suggests a little fire to warm the place up. He then tries to tell a story about.. what was it agan.. that time when.. was it in the Culverwood? His attempts to tell a funny story have the desired effect though. Rather than laughing at the story there are chuckles AT Armand.

Elyngael takes things up a notch with what sounds like thinking music on her flute that seems to poke some fun at Armand.

It may be cold outside but the atmosphere in the tavern is a little warmer.

Beordir enters and heads to Armand, voicing his concerns about the cold weather. Things are certainly weird today.

------------

Osul does his best to determine what these creatures are. There's 3 of them alright. It's alarming, but the only thing he can think of is that these creatures are some sort of undead elemental hybrid. That's his gut feel anyway. (Highlight to display spoiler: {I *think* you needed a Knowl Religion check, so didn't go into the detail there. I could be wrong on that though. If nothing else, 30' tall bolts of lightning will make them more visible to those below.
They deal (with the prevailing conditions) 14, 19 and 17 damage to each hybrid (in turn, one each) if in the area (if the 2nd or 3rd are not within 30' then their bolts are not cast).

At this point, the best he can do is keep this up, and hopefully harass and harang them.

He makes quite the site out on the branches, lightning around him, wind whipping his hair and rain pelting his face. "Not on our watch!"

DM RobC - "Not on our watch!"
Wednesday November 22nd, 2017 5:48:40 AM

Neshi steps in to knock the performances up a notch.

Beordir and Armand discuss ways to protect themselves from the cold. A potion might just do the trick.

The peace and calm that had fallen over the people is broken by Mack's warning cry. The patrons all fall quiet and look to each other.

Mack casts a few spells in preparation for a fight as Elyngael does the same. They gather with Talya at the doorway, ready to protect those inside. The residents are hudling together and looking for things to barricade the doors and windows. "What do we do? What do we do?" They look to the trio for direction.

Atlas goes out on a limb and fearlessly calls out the challenge. He makes quite the imposing sight.

Osul does what he can to both slow these things down as well as alert the others. He calls down the lightning! In the midst of this storm the bolts are thick and strong. Please advise the DC to save against for half damage.

The three creatures drop to the ground landing as thick clouds of black smoke. As the smoke hits the ground the rain and wind immediately stop. The clouds remain dark and forboding and it is still quite cold, but it is bearable. It goes without saying that the weather is erratic today. Perhaps these creatures have had some sort of influence on it? Perhaps these creatures aare a result of it? Or perhaps they are completely unrelated?

From the smoke the figures emerge, standing back up to their full height. They start slowly lumbering towards the Tree. Their path is unwavering and their pace is steady: their target is without question the Tree.

It's been a long and confusing day. So much has happened in the space of 24hrs that there hasn't been any time to consider it all. Maab, the weather, the Tree, the treants, these things. It's more that most would see in a lifetime. Whatever is going on has to be big. Very big.

Atlas feels a bit silly as the strange creatures completely ignore him, and for the fact that he already requested feather fall from the group to get down the first time. He racks his brains to figure out what to do next, then it dawns on him that they are going for the Tree. He says out loud to no one in particular, "Could they really cause the Tree to die? Would it fall?" With that thought, he runs to the Triple T to find Armand.

"Armand, these crazy flying shadow things are about to attack the Tree. I'm heading down there, but I need someone with more brains than me to figure out if we need to get these folks to safety away from the Tree or in the Tree." And with that Atlas is off, calling for someone to lower him in the lift.

He then sets himself into a defensive posture as he feels his shoulders lighten from the potions effect

Atlas worries for the Tree and alerts everyone to the imminent threat. With no quick way down to the ground he settles for the lift.

Armand gives Atlas a little more protection for what looks like a big fight. He isn't afraid to throw the treants to the mercy of these things. Armand is pretty sure he's looking at some negative energy elementals. Real big ones too.

Beordir is close behind and downs a flight potion. He takes up a defensive stance. These things are coming this way right? Why not let them do all the leg work.

Elyngael is in a shoot first kind of mood. There are people behind her that are looking scared and some shadowy evil things coming this way. If now isn't a time to shoot, when is? Her first shot is true, but the second is a miss. It's gotta be the wind, am I right?

Mack and Squeaver look down. It wouldn't be that much of a jump/fall, but they're not willing to risk it right now. (Make a DC15 Acrobatics check and you'd 'only' take 1d6 non-lethal + 2d6 lethal)

The creatures easily shrug off the lightning assault from Osul, but take a surprising amount of damage regardless (Double damage. All saves made). The clouds are proving more than capable of delivering a solid charge. That could work both ways however.

Talya waits for the party to act before putting up a solid fog spell right in the way of the first enemy. Given their size she isn't able to affect more than one but at least it will slow it down a little.

Two of the elementals walk around the solid fog while the third is still in the fog.

They are close enough now that they are able to focus their energies. The negative power emanates from them catching a few of the treants in their range. Splinters fly from the treants but they still stand.

NE1 and NE3 are 70ft away from the Tree and closing. They seem to be ignoring Osul's assaults and pressing for the Tree.

NE2 is 100ft away from the Tree and still in the sollid fog.

No map needed. The DM will rule in your favor where there is ambiguity.

Atlas paces as the lift lowers. With Mack and Squeaver on the roof it's a fast ride. The trio make record time, arriving at the base of the Tree with a loud *thump*

Neshi shows off some acrobatic skillz, walking, tumbling and summersaulting down the tree. Once on the ground he reorients himself and throws a javelin of lightning at the closest figure but the javelin misses its mark.

Armand *hopes* his shot will do something but it too misses.

Elyngael has better luck. Her first shot is a good one, but it doesn't do the damage she was hoping for. These things just don't have a weak spot (Immune to crits)

Talya casts a glitterdust spell in their way, but it doesn't stop them. They just keep on coming.

Armand digs into his bag of tricks. NE1 is damaged (a little) whilst NE3 pauses for a moment, unable to see.

Osul saves the lightning bolts for later. He suspects they will be needed again soon. He starts casting another spell.

NE1 presses ahead, now only 30ft away from the Tree. It unleashes an unholy blast of energy. Atlas, Mack, Squeaver, and Neshi: Will Save vs DC22. Fail=30pts negative energy damage. Pass=half.

The nearby Treants burst apart as splinters fly about.

"What have we here?" asks the stranger who suddenly appears from behind the tree. He isn't a particularly handsome or intimidating human, but he's dressed in a magnificent crimson and gold suit, complete with a matching top hat. "Negative energy elementals, eh? Old ones too by the looks of them. You folks sure you're up for this fight?"

The stranger starts digging around in a pouch on his belt before continuing. "Never much like folks fighting my battles for me, but you lot look like you need a hand. Ah, here we are..." He pulls out a licorice root and runs it along the shimmering, prismatic, really expensive looking sword that hangs naked on his hip. He pops the shaving into his mouth & vibrates slightly. A rush of nervous energy flows from him & energizes the party.

"I'm Restlin, by the way. This terrifying creature next to me is Sesha. The consortium asked us to come check out what's going on around here."

Teleportation was a funny thing. It was so flashy, so sudden, but so so silent. Happily humming an upbeat, girly tune, the arrival of the dark elf girl was both sudden, and unexpected. And much quieter than that of the flashy human wizard next to her.

Both feet firmly on the ground, she lifts up a slender foot, taps the toe of her supple boot on the floor beneath, and stretches. Only when she spots the giant elementals thrashing people and things around her, does she stop humming.

"That doesn't look right."

Sesha observes their location. They seem to be on the ground level underneath the Great Tree, as she's heard it described. The folks in front of her and Restlin had formed a defensive line, and there was at least one flying around. There were quite a few people here, and all of them were hurt.

"So much to do, so little time.", she starts humming again, and casts a spell. A white nimbus of healing energy starts flowing around her, and anyone within 30ft of her, namely everyone on the ground level, heals 76 damage.

Atlas pushes forward through the pain, but it distracts him from his own attack.

Osul buffs his rhino (not a euphamism) and sends it in to charge. It's horn doesn't connect with the elementals form.

Elyngael keeps up her arrow assault with one striking true.

Armand warns the others, fearing this may be a battle the party just cannot win. He scrapes the bottom of his barrel of tricks and tries to command one to flee. Would you believe it? It actually works! (Nat1 on Will Save! Nice time for that one).

Armand draws on his heroic reserves to cast a Holy Smite spell. Elemental 2 took a little, but Elemental 3 takes the brunt.

Beordir flies over the railings - and the elementals - to land behind one and deliver a shocking grasp. His casting doesn't provoke an attack, but his movement there does. (Hit AC36. Beordir takes 16pts damage + 8pts negative energy damage Highlight to display spoiler: {That gets healed almost immediately. See below}Beordir must also make a DC18 Fort save or take 3 negative levels!) He does manage to shock the elemental though.

Mack just gasps as the wave of negative energy sweeps over him and downs Squeaver. (Highlight to display spoiler: {Potions have a CL equal to the minimum level required to cast the spell. For your specific ones: CLW=CL1, CMW=CL3}

The party are in a bad state, and are barely holding these elementals back from destroying the Tree and all who reside there. Things are always darkest before the dawn though.

Wardd smiles on the Tree of Parting this day, as two well-seasoned travellers approach.

One is Restlin - a mendicant of Wardd, who trusts in chance and luck. Just the kind of person Wardd would send. He quickly assesses the situation and finds a way to help bolster the attacks of the party with a Haste spell.

The other is Sesha - a bloodwitch of Serenbeth. Feared by evil, misunderstood by some, loved by many. She calls on the power of Serenbeth to heal the good and harm the wicked. Those on the ground are healed for 76pts, whilst the nearest elemental implodes. It's black miasma drawn back into a single focused point that then explodes outwards!

After healing 76pts damage, those on the ground now take 28pts damage! (Ref Save vs DC22 for half). The other elementals look a little stronger.

Neshi is ready to fight back now and casts an Ice Storm, managing to hit both elementals at the same time.

Elemental 2 turns to clobber the rhino. (Hit AC31 and AC34. Rihno takes 57pts damage)

Elemental 3 is no longer blinded. It pushes ahead and is now within its 15ft arms reach of the Tree. It tries to bury Neshi with a blow to his head (Hit AC33. Neshi takes 20pts damage + 15pts negative energy damage. Neshi must also make a DC18 Fort save or take 3 negative levels!)

Reflex: 36 - no damage (ring of evasion)

He hops back up to his feet, leaving himself somewhat exposed (AC this round is 18/9/15), but he seems to pay little attention. He starts digging around in his pouch again. "Too big for telekinesis to work, and I don't have Tink's fancy time stopping magic," he grins as he pulls out a small bottle shaped like a woman with her hands folded in front of herself. He opens the bottle & places a drop on his tongue before turning to the elementals & spitting a stream of sticky fluid at them. He helps himself to a nip of the syrup before returning it to his pouch. "...but I can do that!"

Atlas turns to attack the elemental closest to the Tree. He clearly hits with his first swing, but the damage doesn't seem anything like he would expect. He is clearly bothered by this as he manages to fumble his second attack.

Having noticed his actions are much quicker than normal Atlas turns to see the new folks talking to them. "Welcome strangers! When you get a second, look up at the beauty of The Tree of Parting and know that you're doing a good thing by being here to help. Now, please keep doing whatever you're doing to help kill these things. Obviously what I'm doing isn't working."

Sesha, Blood Witch of Serenbeth  d4+1=2 ; d20+21=39 ;
Monday November 27th, 2017 2:00:50 PM

Sesha looks at Restlin, her face singed by the gush of negative energy.

"Yes, Mage-Priest. I think they do explode."

Still though, he had given her an idea. She begins casting a spell, and only the last couple of words are articulated clearly.

"Time Stop."

Sesha watches the world slow, a curious sight. She makes her way to Atlas, and whispers in his ear. "You're doing plenty of good here, young warrior. Don't lose heart!"

She draws her dagger and grips it, then rips the blade across her palm. She uses her own blood to fuel her next spell, with little more than a wince at the pain. She half walks, half dances around Atlas, and enchants his sword, squeezing just a little blood over it's blade. She dips back behind him with a chuckle, and puts a small and slender hand on his shoulder.

"Creatures made of energy aren't quite as scary when you know what you're facing, warrior. Take comfort and be strong in the face of its shadows. They won't hurt you while I'm here."

Sesha casts Death Ward, a spell that makes Atlas immune to negative energy, energy drain, and negative levels. Any negative levels he's already taken are now suppressed. The sounds of battle start to creep back into her ears, and she gets in position, near her Mage-Priest once more - as her spell ends.

Standard: Time Stop.

Time Stop Rounds = 2

1= She casts Greater Magic Weapon on Atlas' weapon. His weapon is temporarily enchanted to +5 to hit and +5 damage. The effect lasts for 24 hours.

2= She casts Death Ward on Atlas @ CL 20. The effect lasts for 20 minutes.

Armand is still in the Tree next to Elyngael. How high up are we? I mean spells are hitting but if we wanted to get to the ground how long would it take?

Armand prays, "Lord Gargul hear your supplicant and grant me the power to stay the draining energies of these evil creatures." and activates Ward Against Death.
Ward against death (8th) 30ft aura protect against death for (rounds=lv) immune to death effects, energy drain, negative level drain.

Ward against Death (having used 1 round many days ago, yet still the same day in the Wold) round 2 of 8.

Armand wonders since part of the Tree is now encompassed in the protective energies of Lord Gargul how it will affect things...

He makes his way toward the lift ropes, keeping Elyngael, Talya and any others on the branch still in his circle. "I think maybe we need to get down there, we can't let these things near the tree." He contemplates grabbing a rope and sliding down.

Forewarned my Armand, Beordir cartwheels one handed to try to put some distance between himself and the impending explosion. It's not enough and he is buffeted further over, but comes back to wobble on his feet.

He's near one of the elementals, but not the one closest to the Tree, as injured as he is, if he steps away, he's surely going to get cut. he again rubs the amulet under his shirt, using it as a focus to center a quick defensive enchantment.

Remembering that these things have strong protection he shifts to a more forceful stance and thrusts his rapier at the one nearest to him. Unfortunately the disorder of everything around his is distracting and time is doing something funny, so his blade goes wide.

Osul calls down the lightning on the elementals

Mack makes a strategic retreat. It's like running away but manly. He gives Atlas a boost on the way past though.

Ever the lucky one, Restlin avoids the damage completely. Drawing on the equivalent of mouth-wash he slows the elementals right down. If only he had one of those time stop spells.

Wait. Sesha does! On casting it she sets to buffing Atlas quite considerably. He now has the benefit of haste, death ward, greater magic weapon and guidance. With that much he's practically an Iron Dragon himself.

Atlas is very grateful that the party have support. It might not be the best time to admire the beauty of the Tree but he encourages the duo to do so. With all the buffs he does more damage than he was expecting.

Neshi casts a spell to protect himself from any further negative energy waves.

Talya sends a ball of glitterdust towards NE3. It takes on a glowy look, but isn't blinded (Will Save 28=Pass)

Beordir tries to attack the elemental, misses, and circles around it.

Elyngael has less success this time around with her arrows. She prepares to head down to the base of the Tree with Armand.

Armand follows the suit of the others and casts Death Ward.

With Death Ward in place, Armand and Atlas seem almost immune to the attacks of the Elementals. Almost.

Elemental 2 is slowed and only has Beordir in range. It tries to knock him out once and for all (Hit AC36. Beordir takes 14pts damage + 3 negative energy damage)

Elemental 3 is also slowed but tries to attack Neshi (Hit AC35. Neshi takes 13pts damage + 7 negative energy damage)

Those on the ground are in trouble. Another Elemental explosion could be the death of someone....

-----------
NE1 - Blown to bits
NE2 - 71 - slowed
NE3 - 117 - slowed and glowing

NE2 - 30ft from Tree
NE3 - 15ft from Tree

The DM is being a bit kind this round seeing as he feels pretty good about his final exam. All of these things work this time around:
- Protection from Energy could not normally be used to protect from Negative Energy
- Circling around an enemy is still moving out of a threatened square and would normally provoke an AoO
- Time Stop normally doesn't allow you to target creatures with "any attack or spell". It's been a thorn in Tink's side that she can't buff her friends when using this spell.

'Osul really wants the elementals a couple of hundred feet away, but that isn't going to happen. So, how does he stop the negative energy explosion like the first one ... ?
He delves deep, seeking the wisdom and power of The Wood... and he senses a flash of something just out of reach.

It's a longshot, but, closing to 40-45' from the glowing NE3 - inside blast zone. Spending 1 Hero Point - Special - Possibilities include casting a single spell that is one level higher than you could normally cast. Rather than More Electric Death (TM), 'Osul barely grasps and attempt to cast Baleful Polymorph. Something Hedghog-like would be nice, and much less likely to explode.

Sesha frowns. People are getting hurt, and while letting the young warriors exercise their own demons is only going to make them stronger, no experience was worth a visit to the afterlife. She uses her enhanced movement, granted by Restlin's haste spell, to cover whatever point of distance necessary to put Beordir in range of her healing spells.

She casts Mass Cure Critical wounds again, affecting as many friendlies as she can. (If an enemy gets caught, that's fine too, but I wouldn't want to exclude a friendly. If only one person can be reached taking the position between putting Beordir on the 30ft edge, then she will move to heal Beordir and catch an enemy instead.)

Sesha Heals for 75hp, no 2 targets more than 30ft apart, and up to 11 targets.
