The Storm

Matthew S. Co-DM The Storm (11:00 am) (Co-DM Matt)
Tuesday November 14th, 2017 7:21:13 PM

Rolth perked up and headed toward the cave entrance along with Kiwina, Sable, Elyas and Finnian.
The sky over the water is dark and from this distance anything in the water is also black.
The storm is blowing the wind across the entrance like daggers as the remaining trees outside strained to stand. Kiwina figured it would be safe to walk out into the storm. Just a little extra difficult to stand. (Acrobatics vs Dc 11 - if going outside the entrance)
Several of you do notice figures lying outside the cave entrance. All of them large and taur-like. Upon a closer study you notice they are taurs. Two centaur and a minotaur to be exact. Their clothes are torn and they are wet. They struggle to move, let alone stand up.
---
Tsak uses the rocks to create a windbreak and protect the firepit. He asked for help with starting a fire. An able-bodied young liontaur offers to help and the fire is lit and warm.
Elyas tries to assure the mother but she is still apprehensive. He asks to help.
Falco approached Tsak and asked for thoughts on any history. The mother of two replied, “I have never, in my history, seen a storm like this. This clan has been here for thousands of years.” To Elyas, “Some answers would be helpful,” she replied, knowing full well answers will be hard to come by.
Gothruk, further within the cave, listened and found some of the thuds seem to be coming from within one of the tunnels. It’s a soft thud followed by a crash. After a moment, there is a commotion and several sheep begin to wander toward the group. Their bahhing sounds distressed and pained, louder than a man speaks.

Tuesday November 14th, 2017 8:44:48 PM

Kiwina says, "The aumakua would not look favorably upon us if we do not even try to save these taurs, let us move to see what can be done." With that, he shields his face from the wind and moves toward the fallen taurs. (Acrobatics = 21, success) If they do not appear to pose a threat, physical or eldritch, he will try to ask them how they came to be here, and whether they would join us in the caves. If they agree, he will help one of the centaurs, using a loop of rope if necessary.

Rolth sees his comrade Kiwina move out into the rain, and is determined to join him. "Domi, grant me strength!" he mutters as he shoulders into the wind, moving toward the other centaur. (Acrobatics = 18, success) He follows Kiwina's lead, checking over the centaur before offering to help.

Tsak decides not to go out in the storm, but tries to get a rope around those that do so that they can be pulled to safety if required. He moves to assist any taurs once inside the cave, helping them to a place by the fire and seeing what can be done for cuts or abrasions.

Sable (Don) ( HP 20| AC: 15/17; Touch: 11; Flat: 13/15; CMD: 19) | Status: Upgraded  d20+4=23 ; d20+4=24 ;

Sable thinks Tsak’s idea of using a rope is a good one - he prepares to haul in folks from the storm as needed (Strength check - 23). While waiting to haul in the Taurs, he will take a hard look at the sheep (Knowledge Nature - 24).

Looking at the story Falco thinks he will be little use helping out there. At his weight he may just blow clear out to sea. Instead of helping with that he gathers the children in the near one of the walls.

"Children come here and I will tell you a tale." if the children move near him begins a tale of a group of travelers who also face a storm and find themselves on an island, their boat wrecked.

It begins:
"Sit right here and I will tell a tall, a tale of a fated trip.
It started right here on this very isle with a skipper who was true.
Sadly the weather started getting rough and their sturdy ship was tossed.
The crew was brave and they landed on an uncharted little isle."

He goes on as long as they will listen about the peoples zany adventures. Each idea more outlandish then the last until they are happily rescued by a passing ship.

Gothruk will do his best to not seem threatening towards the sheep. He'll walk steadily towards them guiding them into the cave, he's no master but he's seen farmers move livestock before and attempts to imitate. (isn't trained in handle animal)

Elyas squints out of the cave entrance, but for now feels like he would be more of a hindrance than a help in carrying the Taurs in from the storm. He doesn't want to be stuck out there himself needing to be rescued.

Instead, he casts Light on a fist-sized rock and tosses it out into the storm to help his companions see more clearly. (perception roll of 12 as he tries to see anything else lit up by his glowing rock)

Do you two see anything out there? He calls out to Kiwina and Rolth

Finnian follows the other two out into the rain leaving his bow unstrung in the cavern so as to nit dampen his string. Naturally acobatic Finnian leaps into the wind but he has to focus all his ability to not be blown away. [Acrobatics=14] The rain makes it hard to see but he does his best to keep alert as he moves as fast as he can to help the fallen Taurs. [Perception=12]

Kiwina moves out to check on the taurs laying in the ground. The win pushes at him making his steps lumber and move at a slower pace.

[Rolth [/b] follows his friend and also has to push against the storm. One thing both notice is sound is being drowned out. A yell might get lost in the winds like a grain of sand on the beach.

Tsak comes up with the idea of tying a rope on those that go out incase they need to be dragged in. Sable thinks its a good idea. (Ooc: if Rolth or Kiwina want it.. they can retro it in.)

The sheep came from deeper in the cave and look scared. A massive storm can do that to an animal.

Falco sits down and calls the children over and begins telling a story. First one child listens, then another... one by one about half the children trickle over to listen.

Gothruk moves closer to the sheep trying to heard them. A few bolt passed and start heading for the mouth. Some move back into the passage they came from. The bahhing doesnt stop.. they are still scared.

Elyas decidesn he would be more help in the cave and casts light on a rock and throws it into the storm. He calls out to see if any of them see anything.

Finnian moves up to to the beach with the others. His eyes strain against the rain and wnd.

The trio venturing onto the beach are aboit halfway to the taurs. The wind and rain is like a wall.. it slows everything to a standstill.

The taurs can be seen to be soaked... their cloaks are saturated.

Tsak does not yet attempt to retrieve Kiwina as he may still recover and reach a fallen taur. In fact keeping the rope firm so that Kiwina does not fall further, he realises that he will need help if he is to return his giant friend to the cave. Straining to have his voice heard over the wind, Falco's preposterous imitation of a screwy first-mate and the bleating of rogue sheep he yells to Gothruk and Elyas for assistance.

He keeps trying to calm the sheep that are still around him.

Rolth heads toward the fallen taurs with Sable’s line tied to him.
Kiwina takes the rope from Tsak but the wind forces him to stumble.
Sable manages the rope and steps into the sheep causing them to turn back into the cave.
Tsak doesn’t yet attempt to retrieve Kiwina figuring he may still reach one of the fallen taurs. He shouts for help from the others.
Gothruk is unable to hear Tsak’s call for aid. He tries to calm the sheep by talking to them. The animals are terrified and indifferent to Gothruk so the attempt doesn’t result in much of anything. The sheep, though begin to settle after a moment.
Falco watches his partners outside. He decides to comfort the many children with a tale.
Elyas moves to help Tsak hold the rope.
---
Gothruk notices large patches of fur pulled from the sheep, leaving them bald in several areas. Deep within the cave is another crash and a growl. The sounds of hooves approaching.

Outside in the wind and rain Rolth manages to reach the first taur. Rolth only: Highlight to display spoiler: { A centaur stands uneasy in front of you. It’s right arm is broken and swings freely. Rolth stretches forward to help the centaur but the eyes of this creature have no soul. It heartlessly attempts a water filled slam upon the shaken liontaur but it misses. The slam, plus the wind and rain also causes the centaur to fall forward to his knees prompting an AOO.
Falco turns to see the commotion. He sees the large minotaur near Tsak.
Elyas is startled by the arrival of the minotaur. He casts a protective ward on his allies and studies the Flood spell the minotaur cast but unfortunately the minotaur cast the spell 30 feet away and in the wind and rain.

The minotaur looks to Tsak. The minotaur takes the significant blow but says nothing. It barely reacts at all. It then charges to Gore with a pair of seaweed laden horns (Ac: 20 for 10 hp)

Elyas attempts to attack #1 Fs Minotaur but it is down. The acid falling harmlessly beside the body.
Falco asks if the creatures are being controlled. He cannot detect any form of control.
Kiwina draws his sword at the cave entrance looking to see who needs aid.

The mighty Gothruk stands strong against the rush of water and the bullrush. He throws a flurry of blows for dmg of 5 (OOC: Just a combat maneuver- bull rush to hopefully knock you off your feet. Didn’t work :) This special attack does not provoke AOO)

Tsak Rezar throws out tactics for the others to follow. He stabs at the liontaur but misses.

Falco unleashes a little acid dart which connects on the flank of the floodslain centaur attacking Gothruk.
Rolth steps back to the cave entrance, a mantra on his lips as he pulls out his weapon and readies incase one of the floodslain come to him. “Nice spell” he says to Finnian “Now shoot it.”

Sable tries to help Gothruk but fails.

Kiwina moves fifty feet, plants the end of the spear into the liontaurs flank for 6 dmg. If the creature felt pain, it does not show it.

Gothuk puts the floodslain centaur that was attacking him down. He looks to the other centaur and liontaur and sees he has a straight line to them.

Finnian runs towards the taur and casts a spell, turning his hands into thorns and wood. As he gets ready to attack the creature dies.

Elyas fires a shot from his crossbow. Even firing into melee doesn’t even fault his shot and it plows into the skull of the creature, splashing gore out the other side.
The floodslain #2 is entangled from the spell, but starts breaking through the weeds and moving out of the area.

Saturday November 25th, 2017 10:35:05 AM

Tsak uses his training to stop the bloodflow and suture the wound on Kiwina . Tsak does a good job and between that and the healing Kiwina is set.

Elyas is happy he was more of a help and not the one needing help. He suggests burning the bodies of the dead taurs. It would have to be done in the cave, due to the storm outside.

Kiwina takes time to relax and recuperate, but would rather be guarding the cave.

Falco checks on the townsfolk, especially the children. He tells them the petals are there for them and one Taur child runs to him and wraps his arms around him.

Rolth suggests to Arostle to ask if his people could help build up the weather defenses. He nods and says he'll have the men help. He also says they'll gather some rope and tie up the sheep.

Rolth sets up watches and decides they can search the cave in the morning.

Sable searches rhe bodies.. and other then the weapons and water logged clothes.. nothing is salvagable. One thing he notices.. the decayed flesh thats pulled away from the ribcage reveals the lungs are full of water.

Finnian was ready to use a new spell, but decides to heal Kiwina instead. He offers to take a watch. .

Gothruk helps gather up the sheep, and with Arostle's rope they are secured togther and tied off to a crack in the wall.

The night goes by at a snails pace. Thunder, lightning, win and rain assault the cave. Children cry through the night.. and sleep comes in patches. When Dawn comes the wold is not as it was the night before... flood waters are high.. and parts of buildings can be seen floating. The skys are dark and the wind is whipping up the sand and leaves. Then everyone notices... the storm hasn't moved... its as if its sitting ontop of the island.

Finnian spends a few minutes soothing the sheep and then casts a spell. He begins bleeting to them and a series of baahs is all that os heard from him for the next minute.

"Hello Mr. Sheep, I am Finnian. We are friends. Sorry to invade your cave. Have you been here for a while? Do any of you know where these creatures came from? Or what is back there? How far back is the cave? We want to make the cave safe. And if we can find an answer to where this storm came from. Any help would be awfully appreciated."

He finishes talking to the sheep and relays any information gathered to the party. Then announces that he too will stay with the wounded and casts a CLW on Tsak. Then hefts his bow to keep watch on the cave entrance. [Tsak 9 healing!]

Rolth points further into the cave and asks if anyone is familiar with where it leads. He suggests they explore the cave system.
Elyas is the first to follow Rolth into the cave system. Then Sable. Sable squeezes easily through the opening with a half a meter excess.
Gothruk says, “I too would like to explore the cave. Even of we don't find anything we'll know it's safe to move further into the cave out of the rain being blown towards us.
We should keep some petals here however incase there are more of those poor drowned meatsacks, we wouldn't want our wounded attacked while we were out.”
He volunteers to lead the group.
Falco is a bit worried about leaving the villagers but is prepared to move out with the others.
Tsak gives Rolth a wry grin and says, “Mutton yesterday, mutton today and blimey if it don't look like mutton again tomorrow! Take a few people with you, and maybe leave a couple here with Kiwina and myself so we can continue resting without getting eaten or beaten.”
Kiwina accepts the plan to split up the party. He stays with Tsak. He asks about the length of time they plan to spend exploring. He suggests that too much time apart may be bad.
Finnian spends some time preparing spells and then says, “I may be able to gleam some further insight before you venture back there.” He then craftily talks to the sheep.
-----
A couple of the liontaur villagers started to speak at the same time but a younger taur won the unconscious battle and said, “There are a couple ranchers that keep their sheep in the cave. My father is one. He points to an older liontaur near the campfire. That would explain the sheep. It’s sad that he has now lost several. It just doesn’t help us at all.”
To Finian a ewe replies with a baa.. That short reply says a lot. Finian only: Highlight to display spoiler: { The ewe tells a terrifying story of taur falling from a large hole in the roof of the cave. Tsak gets a good amount of sleep and wakes up in the morning refreshed.
Gothruk and Tsak are disappointed that the sheep are owned.
Falco says, "There will be many losses I fear but if we pull together it will be ok. We may need to use some of your sheep to keep this group fed in the short term but in the long term I am sure your neighbors here will help you get back the loss in some way." Then asks to see if the others want to continue exploring.
Rolth asks for information and the villagers are happy to explain that the cave goes back about a mile with several holes in the ceiling due to cave-ins. The sheep normally stay near the entrance, when no one is inside with them. They then advise that there are several dangerous sections past the first hole in the ceiling.
Elyas offers to cast light on Rolth’s weapon. He asks for a guide but the villagers advise it’s much too dangerous with the rain coming in and the potential for cave ins.
Finnian thanks the sheep and tells the group what he heard.
Kiwina wonders why they stay near the entrance.
---
The storm outside keeps up it’s relentless pounding on everything outside. Inside the cave, after 100-foot, you notice a circular chamber with a huge ceiling. Within that ceiling is a large hole. Rain falls from the sky into the center of the chamber. Some sheep skirt around the edges near the rock walls but most of the anti-chamber is flooded. The water seems to drain South into several other cave entrances.

Sable looks for anything unnatural but the rain and the sheep are natural as far as you can tell. The storm above… there is something strange but it’s hard to figure out.
Rolth looks up into the storm to see the strength of a full on hurricane swirling above. Small objects, possible creatures flying helplessly with it.
Falco pushes on. The rocks are slick. The water, at this point is ankle deep, but slick. And he can tell its sloping down.
Elyas watches for zombies. He recalls that this room was a place of worship for ancient treants that originally populated this area. The carvings begin to become noticeable along the walls.

Tsak checks the dressings on Kiwina’s wounds and relieves Finnian to get some rest.
Gothruk keeps watch. He notices with keen perception that other taurs walk around outside the cave, or at least try to walk. The wind makes any step hard work but they keep trying, looking for something.
Kiwina rests and tells stories to several of the hybrid children.
Finnian wonders about his purpose in the Wold and asks the ground and trees for guidance. Some of the trees are screaming as they are ripped from the ground. Others, ancient treants, seem to be busy if not fighting for their life.

Above your head you realize that the rain is beginning to slow till eventually it stops. The circulating cloud stops and Perception vs DC 10 [b] notice that the creatures caught in the storm begin to fall from the sky.[/spoiler] A floodslain minotaur falls from the sky and strikes the edge of the opening and spins. He hits the stone floor and lays awkward, unmoving.
The water begins at a brisk ankle-deep height but the level drops. The water begins to drain leaving the stone floor less wet and flooded. No less slippery. The cave system outside of the immediate room is still flooded. Large rocks are available to grab as the water recedes. Villagers step into the room as the rain stops and offer help to the Petals.

Outside of the cave entrance the wind slows and the floodslain begin to wander more easily. They seem oblivious to any population within the caves. The rain eventually stops but the sky is still dark.
Other villagers begin to gather wood and objects they find nearby. They stack the objects at the entrance hoping to create an obstacle for any curious floodslain. “Jan, a large male clan Kotori chief, insists the Petals rest while the larger members of the Kotori stand guard. “You have done so much for us. Perception vs DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {Alex Marblehorn and the remaining Marblehorns fight floodslain near the beach. The ships, completely destroyed lay on the beach and float in pieces near the shore. They seem to be searching and fighting. }
To the right, outside of the destruction are other taurnament groups fighting the floodslain along with huge treants tossing the undead creatures back into the water.
There are few items available that could make good traps. Large and medium boulders, ropes and levers. (OOC: Using material that would be available in a rocky, cave-like area above the village and the beach. You are welcome to roleplay some traps.. Within reason.. Of course.)

Rolth asks the Petals, "Well, do we stay here like cowards, or go fight like the Taurament champions that we are? We've already lost the Inn and Taurnament field to the storm. And what are they looking for as they fight?" (Perception = 19 for spoilers, success)

(OOC: Just to confirm, it is the floodslain that are looking for something, not the Marblehorns, right?)

Falco points to the battle raging on the beach between Alex Marblehorn and his men and the floodslain.

"My friends traps are a great idea but there is a battle going on down on the beach, I think at least some of us should go help the. There are even treeants and who knows what side they are on."

Perception 11 for spoilers

Elyas sits inside the cave mouth and watches the moving groups of floodslain.

What do you suppose they are looking for? he mumbles, not really expecting an answer.

He tries to obverse the creatures to learn more about them. Do they seem to be intelligent, or maybe controlled by someone ( sense motive 21, natural 20!)

Is there any indication of a spell that created or is controlling them? (knowledge arcana 13)

Finnian (Zeke) (HP:18/18; AC: 16; Touch: 13; Flat: 13; CMD: 17) Status: None  d20+9=12 ;

[perception=12]

Finnian spends the morning preparing spells and looking out at the destruction that the storm has wrought. "The Treants, their on our side. They are fighting for the Wold and we should too.," He says hefting his bow and taking aim.

[ooc how far down thw beach are they?]

Tuesday December 5th, 2017 7:00:37 PM

Not sure what the Marblehorns are searching for, Sable thinks it is a good idea to get closer to get a better look (Perception 21). He will advance with other party members towards the beach, with weapon drawn.

Tsak Rezar (Damien) AC15 (T13/F12) 19/19 HP| Falchion +4 2D4+3|Status: None  d20+6=14 ;

Task, agreeing that the Petals need to enter the fray, will advance with his falchion drawn toward the nearest floodslain. He will ensure to work together and try not to get into a 1 vs 1 situation with these undead nightmares.

Gothruk (BatMark subbing for Logan)  d20+6=26 ;
Tuesday December 5th, 2017 10:02:33 PM

Gothruk is also fed up with hanging about the cave waiting for something to happen, and join Tsak and the others in advancing in careful formation. His guisarme is ready for action, and he will take an opportunity attack if any floodslain get within his extensive reach. (Perception = 26 to notice threats approaching)

(OOC, we actually have several folks with reach weapons out and ready, so please take that into account if things get close.)

Kiwina (BatMark subbing for Steve)  d20+8=12 ;
Tuesday December 5th, 2017 10:06:53 PM

After pointing out the trap-building potential of the local materials to the villagers, Kiwina will accept Finnian's offer of healing before joining the Petals advancing to the fray. Still smarting from the last beating he took, he will employ his longspear, and try to keep the floodslain at reach. (Perception =12)

Tuesday December 5th, 2017 11:24:45 PM

Rolth rallys the troops as he looks out onto the beach. He sees the living people on the beach searching around.

Falco adds that traps would be a good idea, but they might not have time at the moment and are more needed to fight.

Elyas does see intelligence in their movements and decision making, but the also look like they are free willed. He doesn't see any evidence of a spell.

Finnian prepared his spells, and then decides where he is most needed. He sees plenty of wounded people on the beach, and plenty of dead walking too.. it would take too long to count.

Sable wants to figure out what they are searching for, but from here he cannot tell. He ventures out onto the beach and the destruction and despair is more evident. The beach is covered with bloated dead, and torn apart corpses. And some rise as soon as they come to a stop from the tide rolling in.

Tsak agrees that they are needed and draws his weapon as he heads out.

Kiwina and [/b]Gothruk also follow out into the fray. Again, the destruction is more evident as the beach is littered with corpses... hundreds. Everyone snaps back to attention as a huge treant swats a group of dead and sends them flying into the sand. Some get back up, some don't.

A group of the undead break off and move towards the party. About 10 in total, but still far enough away to not be able to attack or be attacked.... but they are come to the party.

Oh crud! thinks Tsak. 4 of these things was dangerous, 10 is too many for us to take on!
How can we whittle down the numbers?
(Perception to come up with an instant plan to save the world from the wet, smelly, undead monster things - or maybe just notice something useful)

Rolth surveys the terrain looking for any advantage. (Perception = 20)

Are there any natural chokepoints, high ground, or nearby allies that we can use to our advantage? If not, we should pull back to inside the cave entrance, where they would encounter traps, then be funneled in small numbers into our ranks of reach weapons, so we would get far more attacks than they would, including attacks of opportunity.

Are any of the floodslain spread out that we could pick off, or in a tight group?

How fast do they move? Could we use speed to attack one or a few in isolation?

Falco Ambersier (Ryan M) AC 13 (T13/F11) 14/14 HP | 7/7 Acid Dart | Lt Crossbow +4 1d6 x2 | Status: None | Spellbook Party Loot Sheet  d20+8=12

{Know Arcana: 12} normal undead? zombies?

"Well it looks like they are coming this way."

Falco moves forward if the others do but stays near the back, crossbow in hand.

Finnian starts firing arrows at the beasts when they get within 500 feet but pauses when they are 100 feet away. His first shot falls very short. [attack=1] He looks around hopin that no one saw. "Bow strings wet," he says to anyone how may have caught his catastrophic miss.

[ooc, how far is the group coming at us?How fast are the moving?]

Gothruk will stab any bodies nearby incase they try to get up later, he'll also look around the group making sure we arn't getting attacked from any other direction.
I agree moving back to the cave would be the best bet, we could try and whittle down their numbers by keeping ahead of them and attacking with reach weapons but that seems dangerous (and I don't think it could work mechanically)
Rolls failed to properly reset, just ignore them.

Kiwina studies how fast the floodslain move, and whether they are grouped together or spread far apart. If there are some that away from others, it may be possible to engage them with several attackers. (perception = 20).

Tsak searches for anything helpful to cut down the hungry floodslain mob heading toward them. He notices an outcropping of rocks that could separate the group, if you could figure out how to do that. Another taurnament group, a ragtag group of humans and taurs is fighting off four thin floodslain near the far side of the rock.
Rolth surveys the surroundings along with the others. He suggests falling back into the cave. There are ledges outside the entrance of the cave but would need a Climb check. The floodslain are slow moving creatures.
Gothruk agrees that moving back may be a good idea. He also suggests they use reach weapons
Falco wonders about the creatures and finds they are undead. He moves with the others. Kiwina finds they are group together but very easily distracted as a pair head toward a taurnament group near them. (OOC: Did you get any rest the other night? I little rest goes a long way)
Finnian starts firing
arrows when the creatures get within 500 feet and pauses at 100 feet. His first shot misses.

----
In front of you is the expanse of the beach, 1000 foot length, with taurnament fighters and treants fighting every 100 foot. You are fighting within the center of a 100 foot wide section. The ten floodslain are 300 foot in front and below you. A pile of rocks jut from your right side and a 15 foot cliff on your left.
The ten floodslain are trotting forward at a 30-40 foot trot, depending on what kind of creature they are and if they are.. “Oh a ball..” distracted. Two are currently heading right.
A really good Perception vs. DC 12 will win you, Highlight to display spoiler: { You notice that the groups seem to be separated in five with several weaker taurs and a single stronger one. The separation is barely noticeable.}
