Sigvar heads to the weapons and prepares to train the volunteers. This group is very eager and they listen carefully to all he has to say. Some pick up on the skills very quickly, while others lag behind, but not for lack of trying. Many are sweating hard before they are done. Trayvin joins in and helps out where he can, showing recruits what they need. He pulls aside one fellow that simply isn’t as large as the rest and shows him some first aid. At the same time, Anna takes a pair over to the side and shows them how to operate a crossbow. After she shows them the basics, one asks if the giant crossbow on the roof operates the same way. He says that his name is Juar and he really wants to be a First soldier like Anna. Pru works to help inspire the recruits. Pompous demonstrates the flaming sword to all. They are suitably impressed. One raises his hand and asks Pompous, “When do we get flaming swords? Soon?”
Nikolai takes up a position near the center of town. With the support of commander Palence, he finds someone with engineering experience. They point and plan a new town that will be much more defensible and will make much more sense than the previous town that was simply some buildings where people wanted a building when they needed more space. They create some grand plans with much room for expansion. A few of the older men in the town watch and appear to approve of the plans.
Michael grabs another team of three younger soldiers and takes them out on patrol. He shows them how to walk and where to look when they are walking. He tells them about signs in the wind and sounds they should listen for. As he does so, one of the recruits says to him, “You mean like that?” Looking over where he is pointing, Michael can see a row of small moles running out of the crack in the street and heading off to the south. There are at least a dozen of them, moving as quickly as they can. As he turns to answer the recruit, three deer come running down from the north. Nikolai spots them as they run straight through the middle of town and also head to the south as fast as they can move. One of the men with him says, “Deer? In town? I wish I had my bow, that would be some easy food there.”
Two horses are tied up at the gathering area and they start to buck and make some noise. They are struggling to get free – and these are little more than plow horses, not active warhorses. A large flock of small brown birds quickly flies overhead, also heading off to the south. Everyone outside can hear the noise of a number of dogs suddenly howling as well.

In reaction to the animals, the Agents moves quickly. Sigvar takes the lead of some new recruits and lines them up facing to the north. He looks off to the north, but sees nothing coming at the moment. Trayvin moves over with Sigvar, with a glance to the south as he thinks about following the animals. Pru looks around as well, knowing the animals are likely responding to something.
Anna moves quickly over to the horses and talks to them. The horses do no reply at first, but simply mention that something is happening and they are scared. They want to get away, they need to flee to the south, away.
Nikolai calls out to his group of the Fist and starts to separate them from the others, gathering them back together. He mentions moving off to the north. Pompous grabs his gear and joins him. Akir looks around and prepares to move as well.
In the wake of all the animal activity suddenly things get eerily quiet, so quiet in fact that you could hear a pin drop if you were so inclined. It doesn’t last long. All of a sudden there comes a horrendous crash and things sound as if the Wold is tearing itself apart. The sound is so loud that you can’t quite pinpoint where it is coming from and if you were hard pressed to guess you would have to say everywhere but you aren’t quite sure how that is possible but suffice it to say it is that LOUD.
Eventually the racket subsides and you hope for a second that maybe whatever that was signified the end of all the troubles happening of late. If only things were so fortunate because not even a full moment after the thundering noise ceases does the ground start trembling again...could it be an earthquake?
This activity feels different as if it is in reaction to something major and not the main event itself. Is the Wold really being split apart? Have the Woldians done something to anger the Gods? Who knows?
The ground you are standing on rocks back and forth like a ship tossed about in a tempestuous sea. Bits of rock, dust and other debris start to fall from the nearby structures and fissures open up in the ground along the roads and thoroughfares. An unattended cart in your proximity tumbles down one of the chasms that have opened up and after a short amount of time you hear the impact of wood on rock and you think luckily there wasn’t a horse attached to it.
And then just as quickly as the concussive sound appeared and the tremors started, the Wold shaking terminates.
You wonder if this is a repeat of the recent earthquakes. A few structures sway, but the only actual damage is from a building that was only just starting to be framed up and hadn’t been braced yet. The locals in the town look terrified after a few days of relaxation and safety. They all turn to look at the citadel, hoping that once again the Agents of the Fist will be able to save them again.
Looking up, you see a number of red streaks across the sky, with brilliant sparkling colors trailed by fiery tails. They are headed to the north and appear to be quite low. It looks as if they will be hitting the ground somewhere near to the north of the citadel. Hundreds of other meteors fly by at much higher elevations headed towards other distant locations. There is a shaking of the ground and red glow near the horizon to the north.

They look somehow natural (as in not supernatural or magical) and he’s not heard of anything like this related to the gods or any religion.
Trayvin pauses, ready to move as a team.
Shane directs the recruits with hand signals and sees that they, too, are covering their ears and have likely been affected by the boom. They appear to understand him and move towards the citadel. Shane turns back to the north.
Pru watches a cart go by and then holds onto a wall for dear life. She cannot hear and isn’t sure what is going to happen next or what she should do.
Akir more calmly watches the meteors fly overhead and covers himself as he watches them pass. He is pretty sure at least one has crashed less than a day’s travel from the citadel, directly north.
Nikolai is also shocked by the sound, but he retains his wits and leadership. He sees Sigvar head off and he gestures for the rest of the fist to join him as he moves north as well.
Pompous covers his ears, but when he removes his hands, he still cannot hear. He looks around and tries to communicate with the others that he cannot hear. Anna moves to Pru and attempts to tell her that she is deaf.
Sigvar has started off to the north and Nikolai has indicated that others should follow. Some of the townspeople are sitting down on the ground crying. Recruits and other soldiers are quickly headed back to the citadel, forming up ranks and seeking safety in numbers. A few of the townspeople have also joined them, clearly scared by the meteors. Others have come together into the town square again, ready for an attack. It is still quiet around the town, especially after the boom, and especially for those who cannot hear. Michael prepares for battle as Anna heads over to the twisted grass. She tries to speak to the grass, but she only gets feelings of pain. This seems quite odd to her because even if the grass was in pain, she should be able to speak to it and get more from it than just feelings. She cannot tell if this is because her ability is not working right or because of something else entirely. When she heads towards the dog to speak to it, the dog stops writhing for a moment and one bloody eye turns to look at her. It tries to roll over, but instead just howls in pain. Since Akir just sent a horse home, we’ll go with no horses and wagons. The horses would REALLY have not wanted to go, anyway.

Trayvin heads over to the dog. He examines it and can only tell at this point that it appears to have died from massive blood loss. There are gaps and missing fur in places as well that may have contributed to the blood loss, but it is unlike anything he has seen before.
Anna examines the plants. They are natural, but they are not. They appear to have been affected by something, but not something magical. Perhaps something from not of this Wold. To Anna this is very strange and extremely unnatural.
Michael checks his hands and sweat. Is that something ree on them? Everything is so tinged with red right now, he's not quite sure. There is no bleeding red in his sweat...yet...
Meanwhile, Akir peeks over the next hill and Sigvar heads to the top of the hill to scout ahead:
As the group slips over the last rise, they come upon a scene of apparent destruction and devastation. You have clearly found the site of the meteor strike. At the center of a low area in the hills, you see a large, deep, steaming red crater. You cannot see the bottom of it, but there is a red glow coming from the crater. There is more of the strange red grass around the edges of the crater. There are a few animals here on the ground, a deer and a small dog, bleeding out and writhing in pain. Off to the side of the crater is a strange sight: a number of animals that are not on the ground and dying. There is a group of very large boar here. Each boar is nearly seven feet tall and ten feet long. They are truly massive creatures. They have long, large tusks and bright red, bloody eyes. There are patches of fur missing from some of their sides and heads. The one nearest you is dripping large amounts of blood from its nose. The group appears to be rooting around and sniffing the air around them, unlike all the other animals you’ve seen that are dead and dying in the area.

Just before the charge, Nikolai ponders the creature and his healing efforts. He cannot understand why the creature was not healed, or at least had the bleeding stop. It certainly should have happened with this wand, but for some reason, it does not. Before he can ponder that thought too much more, the massive boars start their charge.
Trayvin prepares himself with a magical shield and braces for impact. Pru launches a massive fireball that rocks the world of the boars, but they continue their charge. Sigvar steps forward and takes a massive swing at the first creature out of the ball of flames. His sword chops very deeply into the beast and Sigvar is sure he has dispatched it – except it doesn’t quite fall. The next massive boar out of the fireball tramples towards Sigvar. It slams directly into Sigvar with all of its 2000 pounds of bulk. At the same time, Michael slips around the side of the dune and chops into the beast as Sigvar takes a shot at it. The momentum of the creature takes it through Sigvar and knocks Sigvar to the ground, but as Michael and Sigvar slice into it, it nearly explodes into a mass of internal organs and blood behind him. Two more boars run up to Sigvar and attempt to take bits out of him, but he manages to twist and turn out of their way!
Another boar crashes directly at Akir. The beast slams into Akir and he actually spins in the air for a moment before realizing that the creature bit him in the leg as it passed by. Another boar spots Anna and runs straight at her, kicking and clawing, but unable to hurt the smilodon. The last two boars run directly at Akir and as Akir stops spinning and regains his sense of direction, another boar bites into his leg.

Anna-Smilodon jumps up and attacks the boar near her. She strikes deeply into it and easily grasps it in her paws, attempting to tear it apart. She tears it good, but not enough to kill it. The massive beast wiggles and tries to attack, but Anna-Smilodon holds it tight.
Akir slams into the beast that attempted to trample him deeply. Blood splashes and entrails fall, but the monster does not stop fighting. Akir spins with the monster and brings his weapon down on it again. With the additional electrical charge, he watches as the creature almost turns to goo. When he turns back around, he just dodges the attack of another of the monstrous boars. Nikolai runs up to attack the first one, but finds it is dead. Instead, he slips in the mess when he attempts to attack another boar. The boar’s jaws snap at Nikolai, but he easily dodges out of their way.
Sigvar looks at the monsters and they clearly do not look undead, more just like they should already be dead but they’re not. He swings his sword from his back, but his blows just bounce off the knees of the creatures. As he scrambles to his feet, one of the boars manages to bite painfully into his shoulder, but at least he is back on his feet. The creature again tries to bite him, but Sigvar pulls his leg out of the way, avoiding a second hit. Michael tries to step up, but slips in the gore on the ground and isn’t able to aid Sigvar. Instead, he slices into one of the boars. The boar tries to bite Michael, but bites nothing but air.
Pompous looks past Akir and fires carefully into the center of the melee, striking true. Three arrows stick into the body of one of the boars that had not yet been injured (#2). Pru takes aim and sets off another fireball at the rear of the group. Her aim is a little off and the fireball doesn’t hit exactly where she wanted (they both saved), but it torches the rear ends of two of the beasts. Perception, DC 28 or Heal, DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {Boar #8 is roasted and bleeding. There is no way that thing should be alive!}. Trayvin steps up to the one on the end and slices into it.
The battlefield is getting messy and the boars almost appear to be getting more angry. There are still five of them on their feet, violently attacking and gnashing their teeth at any who come near them.
OOC: Sigvar, 15 damage from the AOO, please make a fort save, DC 22 I think if Michael had rolled a higher aid another, he could have helped Sigvar from getting AOOed, but a two? Maybe next time that would be an either-or option (attempt to help or attack).

Akir takes deep, measured breaths. His whole life had been training for balance, so he sought it now. Too much magic, and you would have no reserves. Too little, and you put yourself at risk of not finishing the foe before you are hurt. For now, he would simply be content channeling latent power into the blade, rather than pushing through a spell.
With Akirs long reach, both the burned enemies are within his range. He starts with boar 8, striking down with the haft of his scythe, before reversing grip and burying the blade in the mutated creature. If it falls, he simply carries his momentum into boar 2.

The battle continues…
Akir concentrates on the boar to the side battling Sigvar. Hit first shot strikes true and destroys the hideous beast. Once again entrails and blood splash about. He spins and turns to strike another boar, his blade once again finding a target. Bones crack and blood splashes, but this enraged beast simply does not fall yet. It bites back again, this time drawing blood again from Akir’s other leg. Sigvar sees the monster near him fall and turns his entire focus on the other monster near him. His horn and sword strike true, and he tears the creature into parts, splattering gore all around.
To the side, Anna-Smilodon releases her grapple, then attacks again. She slices into the monster with her claws, but fails to grasp ahold of the creature this time. The monster snaps back at her, trying to bite her, but it fails to make contact.
Pompous takes aim at the one creature that has not been targeted, though it is hard to tell with all the blood and gore scattered around the creatures and the ground. His arrows strike true and the beast bleeds even more than it already was. Michael prepares to attack, but watches the creature fall to the ground in front of him. He is surrounded by nothing but gore and massive piles of dead giant boars.
Pru provides some increased speed for her allies and then tries to decide which creature is most injured. She scans over the monsters and from this distance, it looks like they should all be dead. One has bones sticking out of its shoulder. Another has blood just pouring from its mouth. She picks the one she has the clearest shot to and lets rip with some force missiles. She watches as the force missiles tear off a portion of the rear leg of the creature, but it continues to fight! However, Nikolai’s continued beating on the monster manages to bring it down and it collapses, seemingly not wanting to stop fighting.
OOC: Michael, I didn’t see a way to get an attack in. The massive dead bodies and gore are difficult terrain, so I’m not sure where he would go on that move. Heck, with Sigvar and Akir there, Michael can tell where the battle is, but can hardly see what’s going on over there.

Akir sticks his finger into his wound. It hurts. A lot. He is quite sure it is not okay. Sigvar then steps up and touches him on the shoulder. As he does, the wound very suddenly feels a lot better and the purple swelling immediately goes away.
Michael and Anna ponder the smells of the dead boars. Michael ponders a BBQ. Pru wonders about the boars in the area. She had heard of boars in this area before, even small groups of them, but these are really, really big boars. Anna turns into a hawk to head into the skies.
Nikolai looks around and mentions the bird sound. The area still has the glow of red dust around, with a concentration of red and dim light perhaps even coming from the nearby crater. Pompous walks up to Nikolai and says he will check out the sound.
Over the next hill there is a dark shape in the dusty air. Then there is movement in the darkness and you can see the shapes of wings. There is a flock of birds coming up and over the dune, all together, almost in the shape of a cloud. Looking closer, you see that they can’t be birds because each small black creature has four wings. As they flap, you can hear the wings -- they sound more like flesh than the typical sounds of feathers through the air. The bird-creatures are about a foot long, but their wingspan is at least two feet. They are reddish-brown in color, but their bellies are a sickly yellow with bits of pink or red. Each of them has a long protrusions hanging down where you might expect to see a beak. They are about 40 feet away as they come over the hill…

If they carry the same taint the boars did, we can't let any of them get away from here." Sigvar looks dismayed. There is nothing he can do to stop them. Should they attack the group it is doubtful he could kill a significant number of them before being drained and then they would swarm on to infect hundreds, maybe thousands of people and animals.

"Perhaps Sigvar. If they are enlarged like the boars were.." Akir is calm, but his grip on his weapon is tight. He drops his altitude and lands again.
"We don't want to be airborne. Flight would be near impossible if any real number of them got stuck to you. Then you crash AND have these monsters eating you."
He looks over the Agents, glad to know most of them have options for close quarters fighting in case they get grappled. The only issue might be Pompous and his bow.
"Lets try to keep them off of Pompous, and in turn, if one burrows in, we can rely on Pompous and his volume of fire to feel them off of us. They shouldn't be hard to defeat, so heavy attacks and critical aiming probably aren't necessary."
Akir pulls a scroll from his satchel and begins reading. His voice is both light and airy, and a gentle breeze whips through the battlefield as he casts his spell. The scroll decays as he reads, and soon is but flecks of vellum in the air.
Three elementals, all from the plane of air, hover between the Agents and the stirges.
"Engage the enemy as soon as possible, and slow them down in whirlwind form as best as you can!"
(DM, if we were in combat rounds this post, please feel free to retcon this as necessary. In that particular case, Akir would have only had time to land and draw his scroll. In this case we will scoot 60ft away from the stirges for his move action, putting him 100ft away)

Sigvar worries that the flying creatures are stirges. Indeed, they do remind him of such things, though these appear to have much more of a red tinge to them and some almost appear to be dripping blood. Akir wonders if they are enlarged. Though they are one foot long, these don’t appear any larger than the average disgusting stirge. He reads a scroll and three elementals appear.
As the flock approaches, Trayvin throws a spell at them. The holy smite explodes and four of the flying things crash to the ground. Pru, hearing the call for a fireball, easily lobs one into the approaching flock. The smell of burning, rotting flesh reaches across the ground to the group as four more of the thing roast and fall to the ground. Nikolai and Michael step up to the front lines. Pompous brandishes his sword for a moment before switching back to his bow.
The flying creatures attack, seemingly from all directions at once. Akir easily slaps one from the sky as two others dive towards him, flying about his head. Sigvar also knocks one to the ground as it approaches him. Two others dive towards Sigvar and one attached itself to the back of his neck, the long pointy thing stabbing into him. Another two attack Nikolai. Two more dive at Michael and one stabs a beak into his ear!

As the stirges swarm and attack the group, the group responds with a fury not often seen in these lands, nor anywhere else around. In fact were there bards around to witness this violent flurry of attacks, the legend of the Agents of the Fist would likely spread far and wide and could even be a favorite story for children to hear around the lands. Unfortunately, no bards were watching, or at least none that anyone in the area can see.
Akir steps over to Michael and quickly and easily slaughters two of the beasts. Sigvar casts a spell and launches attacks against the stirges on him and drops two more of the monsters to the ground. Anna quickly stabs another while Trayvin watches Sigvar and kills yet another of the invading beasts. Nikolai dodges the new tree and chops a creature in two.
Michael’s ear turns red and quickly swells up from the bite. He responds by knocking the creature off his ear, killing it. He watches it as it falls to the ground and almost explodes in a mass of blood and guts. Pru blasts another, bringing the total of the dead creatures to 10!

Akir quickly dispatches two of the monsters, attacking those on Sigvar. Sigvar returns the favor and quickly destroys the two on Akir. Michael moves and slashes as the four monsters fall to the ground while Trayvin flourishes his Morningstar, waving it about looking quite threatening. Everyone else prepares to continue the assault, but realizes that the creatures have fallen and none others are visible in the air at the moment. The ground now has an even larger pile of guts and gore than before.
Pompous mentions that the tree is permanent while Anna speaks to the tree. The tree responds to Anna: Highlight to display spoiler: {There is something here. It burns. It is trying to take over. It feels painful. It hurts me and burns inside.}
Meanwhile the bits of red grass appear to be spreading from the crater. There are now a few patches of the grass around, closer to where you are that you do not recall being there before. When you look at the grass, it sways as if affected by a breeze, but you do not feel the breeze yourself.
Michael’s ear hurts. It is red and swollen where the creature had attached itself. Akir feels like his back is on fire where the creature stabbed him.
OOC: Please be sure to keep track of those who have con damage, please. If you had an even stat, the loss of 1 will affect your hit points (unless restorations start showing up, of course).

"Thank you again, Sigvar."
The powerful warrior was much like Akir, in that he had found ways to expand his talents beyond just martial power, or magic. The difference, he figured, was that Sigvar would probably credit his strength to his divine patron, than as the product of his hours of training and experience.
Akir straightens himself, frowning when he detects a hint of light-headedness.
"I'll either need a day of rest..." Akir lets the thought hang, scowling at the impact sites and mutated creatures all around. "..or more likely, a spell to heal the blood loss."
With a sigh, he pats his coin satchel. "Lot of volunteer work lately.", he says with a grumble.
Black Sky Friday February 2nd, 2018 1:54:49 PM
Sigvar spots the injuries and quickly steps up. He reaches out with his hands and touches Michael and Akir. As soon as he does, the swelling goes down and they each feel healing power course through them.
Trayvin suggests trying to burn the red grasses. Pru says she can burn things while Nikolai asks for a flask. Michael provides the flask as Anna ponders if fire is the best idea to deal with the grass. Akir feels a bit dizzy but is reassured by his coin purse.
Meanwhile, the red grass still waves about. There is a light breeze as the sun heads towards the horizon. It is late afternoon and the skies are clear.

Sigvar looks concerned. He begins to speak several times, but stops. Finally when everyone starts moving towards the crater his concern for their safety overrides the concern he has abut hurting their feelings. " I think this is a reckless plan. So far Gargul's blessings have shielded me from this disease yet each of you wounded by these creatures has shown signs of infection. I call it a disease since I have no defenses against curses, though my lay on hands does remove curses too. I am almost out of lay on hands, so if more of you become infected, I can't stop it." " The crater need to be inspected, I agree. Let me go do that while you try to contain the disease. When a plague strikes, we burn the dead to contain the disease, and we quarantine the living to keep them from being exposed. I think burning a break around the crater will contain it if we keep any animals out of the area as well. Anna can speak to the animals and express how dangerous the place is...." He sighs and looks around at the devastation already wrought by these meteors. " What we do here is vital to keeping the Wold running. If these things are falling all over the Wold then I hope there are heroes doing the same thing. If this disease gets out it will change the Wold , really change it, and I don't think it will be for the best. I can almost feel Martaeus's hand in this. The animals we have fought were infected, but i made them stronger and more aggressive. They thrived where other animals like the deer died. That is what he preaches. If these missiles are somehow being loaded up by him or his followers, then we need to figure it out and stop it. But first we need to contain the damage it has caused." He stands, waiting for their decision, fearing that he has hurt their feelings by suggesting they are not up to the challenge the crater represents.

Trayvin helps out Michael and Michael immediately feels better. Nikolai attempts to get a sample of the grass in a vial. However, when he attempts to cut the grass with his kama, the blade slides along the edge of the grass without making a mark! He is careful not to cut his fingers as he tries again, but the blade somehow is completely unable to get an edge into the grass, no matter how he tries! He starts to move up towards the crater. Anna moves with him.
Sigvar pauses and mentions his concern about these events. He again suggests burning the area to try and contain the disease. He worries that he has said too much, but he feels it is important. Pompous isn’t sure and takes a few notes.
The air around is still a bit hazy and red. It does appear that there is a bit of a brighter red color coming from the crater hole itself. Nikolai and Anna can hear and feel some sort of low humming sound that might be coming from the direction of the crater, but the sound bounces off the hills around, so they can’t be sure.
