Following their established “Leap before Looking” protocol, the Shields quickly jump through the portal.
They are not vaporized. Although it kinda feels like they were.
The group emerges onto the flat surface of a low lying rock. It is very bright, very hot, and very dry. The sun, directly overhead, causes each adventurer to blink and shade their eyes. The temperature is soaring, and the air completely devoid of humidity.
Scanning about in a complete circle, the group notes the rock is about 120’ in diameter, and slopes gradually down to ground level on all sides. Also, a thick wall of golden-orange grass, 20’ high, surround the rock. No one can see over the top, so the group’s entire world current consist of 120' rock circle, walled in by grass.

Sid's eyes squint in the harsh light as he readies his bow in his left hand. "Ugh, that stuff is going to suck to walk through. He pulls out an arrow from their current patron, "Hey, I doubt it, but can anyone tell if this is magic or not? Hmm, interesting design if nothing else."
"Oh," Sid says pulling out some rope, "We should tie off to each other so we don't get lost. I mean, that looks like getting lost in a wheat field but worse."

Stohp takes out some rope for tying everyone together as Sid suggested, then hesitates. "Us taurs are tall enough I doubt any grass can conceal us. If one of us leads and everyone can see them maybe we don't need to tie ourselves together? I don't like the idea of getting to a fight while the rope restricts our movement."

Dorbin stumbles through the portal and bumps into Stock and Zander as they come out the other side. He steps to the side and tries not to step on Emily Jasmine, who has also appeared through the portal, wandering through rather proudly. Dorbin looks over to the grasses and then up at the sun. He says, "Is this a good place to rest and recover before we wander into that mess?"

Stock goes up and tests the tall grass with his hand. "You're not kidding Sid. It's thick...I'm wondering what hunts in these grasses. Maybe instead of tying off, we all just hold onto the rope. If Bart or Stohp is breaking the trail for us, the grass might get pretty well matted down. I'm thinking one Taur in front and one in the rear to make sure we stay in line."
To Dorbin, he says, "You know, I forgot that we've been going for a while now. It's probably a good idea to prepare. Dorbin and Stock raise the question of resting now, but Zanderallen overrules them and seeks to push on now and rest later.
Stohp breaks out a rope, and Micah ties off loops in it, so that the group can hang on, and yet retain the freedom to defend themselves if attacked.
Zanderallen asks if anyone has a general direction in which to travel. There is not much to go on. The grass looks the same in any direction. Sid, Bartomus, Stock, and Zanderallen all note a gentle breeze from south to north, carrying with it the smell of something sweet.
Plunging into the grass, most expectations are confirmed. The vegetation is much taller than even the taurs, and extremely thick. And, just for kicks, the stuff is covered in some kind of thorny briar. It is possible to for each of the Shields to see the two people up and down their line, but not three. Thus, no one can see all of the team.
After slogging through the thick, spiny growth for an hour, everyone is scratched, poked, and sweating up a storm. - Each PC needs to make 6 saves (one for each ten minutes of travel) Reflex DC21. Take 1 hp damage for each failed save (so a maximum of 6 hp). Class abilities that allow movement freely in natural surroundings allow a +5 bonus on each saves. (I believe this is just Bartomus).
Movement is reduced to half speed as the group picks and hacks its way through the growth. It is possible to move faster, but doing so will result in greater damage.
Bart is in the lead, followed by Stock. Stohp takes up the rear. And where is everyone else?

Bartomus moved into the tall grass and as he tried to push through the grass he found his shirt getting caught on thorns. "Really, thorns, I am starting to think that I am missing the Float."

Dorbin tries to slowly pick his way through the thorns. Occasionally he goes too slow and gets pulled along by the rope, slapping him into the thorns. He says little as he ponders if he could summon an unseen servant to help him navigate the thorns.

Positioned behind Sid and in front of Dorbin Zanderallen pushes through the thick grass. Almost every step he takes seems to take him straight into some branch or another. With thorns seeming to work their way into the cracks in his armor he is quickly losing his usual cheer. "As bad an idea as setting this place on fire while we're in the middle of it sounds it is getting more tempting by the minute. Helping bring up the rear right in front of Stohp and behind Dorbin, Micah moves through the thorny grass with almost unnatural grace. Maybe because he's near the back or maybe because of divine protection, who knows. Whatever it is it runs out as they near their first hour of travel and he quickly starts getting covered in scratches like everyone else. He plods along in silence, wondering how much longer before the found something.

Stohp doesn't have it as bad as some of the others seeing as she's in the back, where everyone's already trampled the grass in front of her. She still gets poked a few times. "No fire please. The last thing we need is to burn down the entire plain, maybe even the item we're after."
After a while of walking she makes a suggestion. "We should try to tramp or cut down enough of this stuff to make a camp soon. We started early and this stuff is a huge pain to walk through. If we wait for night time it may be a while, heck for all we know it might always be daytime here."

The Shields struggle through the thorn-laced press of claustrophobic vegetation.
Various ideas about burning it down are discussed and discarded.
Stock asks about Emily. The kitten is fine, having the sense to choose to ride out the trip in Dorbin’s cloak.
Stohp suggests perhaps taking that break now.
After an hour of struggle, the group breaks into a different type of grass. Purple stalks rise high into the air, where they are topped by some kind of pod. The result is a near total absence of light. The good news is there is no undergrowth. Travel is a bit easier. Still a tough go, but compared to that golden-orange stuff, it’s a walk in the park. Even better, there are no thorns.
So, you can’t see squat, but at least walking is easier.

Sid passes his arrows back to Micah, who casts Detect Magic. The arrows are non-magical, but for several minutes after casting the spell, Micah finds himself nursing an unexpected headache. The pain gradually fades, and soon enough, the cleric feels fine.
Discussion continues about whether the group is heading in the right direction, if they even know really what they’re looking for, and whether to stop or continue.
The decision is to press on, albeit slower as Stock wishes to survey the area for rapke tracks.
Obviously, the odds of just happening to run across rapke tracks in endless grassland are….well…pretty good, actually. Stock very quickly comes upon four, maybe five sets of tracks, crossing and recrossing the party’s line of march at slight angles to the right and left. More or less, the tracks are going in the same direction as the party. The tracks are very fresh.
In fact, he's not entirely certain if he's the tracker, or the trackee.

Stohp highly doubts that random tracks will direct them towards their goal, but she really has nothing better to offer so she stays quiet. At the very least it lets them know they may be being stalked by a predator.

The Shields continue on.
Stock and Sid keep an eye for more tracks. Bartomus keeps an eye out. As no one has heard of rapke before, much less learned about them, their habits and capabilities are unknown.
Stock and Sid figure there are at least a half dozen nearby, pacing the party. The image the old manfri presented in the smoke was a carnivore – claws, teeth, longish tail – of generally proportional size. Based on the footprint, Stock estimates they’re around minotaur sized, give or take.
Dorbin notes he’s short of spells. Zanderallen wonders aloud about stopping, but receives no agreement.
The party presses on. The heat is becoming a problem. Does everyone have water?
The grasses begin to thin out slightly, creating occasional ten or fifteen foot wide openings. Stock and Sid note that despite marching for four or five hours, the sun hasn’t moved much. It is going to be light for a much longer time than normal.

Being used to city life the waterskin on his backpack was rarely filled, today it was since they were travelling to the woods. But the thought of conserving and sharing water hadn't occurred to him. "I agree about taking a rest. Pushing on in this heat is just going to wear us out while we're being hunted."

Stohp is grateful when everyone agrees to stop. She'd figure they'd rest before tackling the plains, and between the earlier fights and the stresses of the journey she's fairly exhausted. Still, camp will take a lot of time to set up. She helps the others with preparation; indeed while she's not very strong 800 lbs is good for standing on grass until it's flat enough to be (vaguely) comfortable.

A halt is called. The Shields find another of the small openings, which Stohp helps enlarge by knocking over the tall stalks.
Stock climbs one, and finds he’s climbed one of the taller plants. To the south is a ridgeline of some kind of low hills. Everywhere else is this grass stuff.
Bartomus creates water for the group, filling up what waterskins are available. Everyone notes the water has a pink tinge to it, but it tastes fine.
Setting up a watch, the Shields make camp, and finally take their rest. After several more hours, the sun begins its descent, setting a couple hours later. Stock and Sid will both realize that they experienced a good 15 hours of daylight, and it was midmorning when they arrived, meaning ‘day’ took around 18 hours.
Noises in the night are louder here. Insects chitter in the darkness, and several times it feels as if a large creature passes nearby. But, despite some frayed nerves, the hours pass without incident.
The spellcasters all manage to get a full rest so that they can prepare spells. However, fully rested or not, it’s still night out. And it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be light any time soon.
So, now what do you do?

Stock calls out what he sees from the top of the stalk. There really is not much to relate though, just a sea of grass. Before bedding down, he takes a few minutes to search for a small rock for his collection, tells the others he will have the last watch, and falls asleep.
The next morning he is up before first light for the last watch of the night. He takes a moment to organize his pack and then spends the rest of the time sharpening his hand axe. When the others start to rouse themselves, he stands up and says, "Quiet night thank god. Should we grab the rope and re-form our conga line?"

When everyone wakes up and it is still dark, he says, "Well, that's going to make traveling a bit different, isn't it? I can create some light, but I don't know if it will be enough."

Stohp rises and takes the time to try to guestimate how long the day is here. "I want to say the day is 18 hours long here, so presumably the night would be about the same time. We have a long walk ahead of us."
As the others get out lights Stohp tries to judge the lighting conditions as well. If there's a full moon then perhaps they can navigate without light. "Light might be necessary, but it will be a dead giveaway to everything out here. We should try to use as little as possible while still being able to see where we're going."

Bartomus slept with some uneasiness, and pulled the watch that he had been assigned. Everything was different and yet, sleep brought some respite from trying to understand where he was and what he was trying to do.
When he awoke, he spent some time focusing his thoughts on the day ahead and the needs he might have to call upon. Fire and health kept swirling in his thoughts. At times there were also jagged bright streaks that crossed his mind. When they got ready, he moved to the farther edges to let his eyes adjust to the darkness and see. After resting up, the Shields prepare spells.
And Micah, Bartomus, and Zanderallen discover more strangeness.
The divine casters all feel the presence of their respective powers to be heightened here. Each one (and any other divine casters the DM might have missed) are able to prepare one additional spell at their highest spell level.
Upon completion of the spell preparation, Micah finds he’s got a recurring itch between his shoulder blades. Bartomus keeps smelling bread. And Zanderallen swears there’s something crawling over his left hand, even though repeated checks show nothing there. DM - None of this has any game/combat affects, just some roleplay weird stuff in the Sargrass
There is no moon, but a bunch of stars are out. The three humans can see well enough not to run into a grass stalk, but that’s about it. Nevertheless, everyone decides to move on, the humans in the middle, and taurs, dwarf, and elf on the ends.
The march continues toward the hills Stock spied, and ten hours later, the sun rises…in the west.
Stohp’s theory that day and night each last 18 hours here proves correct. And now, there’s an additional impossibility, the sun rises AND sets in the west.

At which point the grass changes again. Blue, bamboo like shoots pierce the sky. But that's not what causes the Shields to pause.
This grass is infected.
An all too familiar sickly sweet scent wafts on the air, and each shoot of the blue bamboo grass is wrapped in blood red creeper vines, with small red leaves. A quick inspection to the right and left reveal no end to the sickness.
Leaving the party with a choice. Go through, or turn in a different direction?

The smell of warm bread eventually gave way to the sickly sweet scent of something over ripe. As the pungent smell grew, Bartomus looked about and saw the reddish tinged grass up ahead.

The Shields turn left.
Keeping the infected blue bamboo within sight on their right, the adventurers journey another couple of hours before noticing the red weed infection disappearing.
Following Zanderallen's lead, the group accordingly turns again, and resumes their course toward the far off hills, this time through tall, blue bamboo shoots.
The blue grass is plentiful, but the shoots are quite slender, meaning it's easier to walk through than anything experienced thus far.
Stock asks Bartomus about turning into a bird. OOC - It is light.
At that same time, a shadow passes over the group. Looking up, everyone is stunned to see a large wooden object, at least 80' long, silently pass directly overhead as it skims the top of the grass some 15' above their heads.
The object blots out the sky for a few seconds, and then is gone.
It was moving in the same direction as the group, and maybe a degree or two to the left.

Startled by the sudden appearance, and then disappearance, of what sure looks and sounds like a boat flying on top of the grass, the Shields react in different ways.
Stohp and Stock council caution, apparently forgetting they're talking to Sid.
The rogue is already fixing a rope to a grappling hook, although the object will be out of sight before he can do anything with it.
Zanderallen shouts out a hail.
Everyone is not sure if the hail was heard. There is no response, but after all, it would take some time to turn around.
A few moments after the object .... oh, let's just call it a ship .... passes, everyone hears a high pitched chirp/screech from up ahead, in the direction the ship is traveling. Distances are hard to judge, but it's not that fa off. The sound is animal-like, some kind of call. It is rather unnerving.
But, not nearly as unnerving as the answering calls from practically all around you.
There is a rush of movement heard in the grass, both right and left, as quite a few large unseen somethings race past the group, all heading toward the first call, along the same heading as the ship.

Somewhat disoriented and confused by the sights and sounds, the group is experienced enough to prepare for a possible fight.
Sid and Stohp draw weapons. Stock, Micah, and Zanderallen shift position to take flank and lead. Dorbin moves to the center of the group.
Pressing forward, everyone soon hears a loud thud, the sound of something large and solid hitting something else large and solid. There is more of that chirping, and then a humanoid shout.
The grass begins to thin even more, and it becomes obvious there is a large clearing only a few feet ahead, and from that clearing come the sounds of a struggle involving a lot of creatures or animals or somethings. There are no metal on metal clangs, so if there are swords and axes involved, there aren't many.
The group is seconds from breaking into the clear.

The Shields break cover, Zanderallen and Stock in the lead.
The clearing is large. It’s floor is another one of those flat rock outcroppings, this one covered in an inch or so of dirt.
On the far side is what can only be described as a three masted schooner. One end of the vessel is crunched into the clearing’s floor. The other end…well, the other end of the large and therefore heavy ship appears to be leaning against the slender shoots of the grass, which isn’t bending at all.
And then, it gets really odd.
In front of the grounded ship, a large tree trunk with arms is battling a 20’ long scorpion. A staff wielding elf stands behind the tree trunk. A bow wielding elf rides atop the scorpion.
Arranged in a semi-circle around this quartet, a dozen or so large beetles with enormous mandibles are fighting a dozen or so humanoid cactus who are in turn battling a dozen or so of the rapke animals the old man showed you in the smoke.
It looks like staff guy, tree, and cactus people versus archer, scorpion, and giant beetles versus rapke.
As the group watches, a rapke on the far side lets out a high pitched scream so loud that the beetle facing it is momentarily stunned. Meanwhile a cactus guy beside the two stiffens, sending a fusillade of needles into both rapke and beetle.
Most of the melee continues unabated, but the two elfs back off their companions to regard you. Likewise, the creatures closest to the Shields all pivot to face the group while also keeping an eye on everyone else.

Upon seeing the bizarre melee and taking advantage of the combatant's momentary lapse to study the Shields, Micah assesses the distance and realizes all of them are too far away for Zanderallen's holy sight to give them any information they can use to discern any of their natures. Additionally, he tries to determine which side was on the ship.
Nature he thinks to himself. Then not too loud so that only the Shields can hear him, he asks, "Most of those in the battle are natural creatures. Bart, any ideas as to which side if any, we should assist?"
He takes a stance that indicates readiness without being belligerent, and awaits other to assess the situation.

Stohp looks uncertainly at the two groups. They're clearly rather keen on killing each other, and she doesn't like the idea of getting between the two. "Maybe we should just back away and let them settle it between themselves? We know nothing about this fight, and joining either side could be a terrible mistake. Our mission is to find this artifact, not get involved in local wars."
She eyes all the Rapke's. Presumably the First Rapke would be easy to tell apart, really old and scared or something. She tries to spot any such indications (perception 32 - nat 20!)
(DM MikeK) - Big Fight - round 1 Saturday March 24th, 2018 12:37:24 PM Sid readies his bow. Micah readies himself while trying not to appear provocative. Bartomus votes for helping the trees, but takes no aggressive action.
Zanderallen moves forward and trains his paladin sight on Cactus Guy 5. The paladin calls back that he detects no evil in it.
Stock also moves forward, and calls out to the elves for an explanation. He readies his weapons.
Dorbin suggests concentrating on one enemy, hoping perhaps to keep everyone from attacking.
Stohp suggests backing away and letting the combatants do their thing. She does scan the rapke, looking for an older or bigger or standing out one, but they all look pretty much the same. - The scorpion backs away from the tree, as the elf on it continues to regard the party. “Evolution or Regression?” he calls out, “Declare now or die!”
Meanwhile the tree backs up to the front of the vessel, and that elf climbs its slanted deck to get some height. He too is evaluating the group. “Reclamation or Mutation?” he cries. “Speak now!”
- Meanwhile, most combatants continue their melee.
- Two beetles and two cactus folk advance cautiously on the party. Four of the rapke, two on each side of the clearing, retreat into the 20’ high grass and disappear from sight.

He rolls his neck a bit to loosen up and then begins scanning the field, trying to memorize as much as he can about the different combatants that are present.

Zanderallen echoes their sentiment, and prepares to receive an attack.
Stock gets bigger, and swishes his flail menacingly.
Dorbin observes the sides seem to be even, and suggests concentrating on one enemy.

The scorpion closes on the tree, as the elf shoots it with his bow. The large plant is looking pretty bad. The elf on the ship casts a spell, causing a pillar of fire to slam down upon the scorpion and its rider.
The guys already fighting continue to do so. - The two cactus guys turn around, move away from the party, and gang up on a beetle behind them.
The two beetles attack. B8 moves in on Stock, and bites him. Stock gets an AoO. Stock takes 25 hp damage.
B6 attacks Bartomus, and bites him. Bartomus gets an AoO. Bartomus takes 20 hp damage.
Appearing from right and left are the pairs of rapke Sid was worried about. Each lets out piercing scream that sends everyone’s mind aflutter, and causes both beetles to stop moving.
Everyone make 2 (two) saves - both are Will save DC 17 or be stunned 1d3 rounds. This is a fear effect for those of you immune to such things. If both saves fail, duration is cumulative. --

Bartomus slashed at the beetle that charged and attacked him. While he twisted the blade to strike, he also got trapped in the mawl of the creature. Then there was a piercing scream followed by another one. It shook Bartomus and sent an ice cold flash down his spine. Bartomus froze. Zanderallen pauses for just a second as all of a sudden everything seems to happen at once. He hears the scream of the Rapke but pays it little mind as Domi's power roars in his mind drowning out the shriek. He does notice several of his allies seemly freeze at the alien sound. Stock was guarded by Micah, Dorbin was covered by Stohp and Sid, but Bart was about to be froze with two big bugs, that's who needs help. Acting quickly once he sees the course of action Zander charges the beetle, landing what he hopes is a hefty blow. Stohp wants to tries to grapple the approaching rapke. However, since A) there are two approaching rapke and she didn’t specify which one, and B) she didn’t roll her two Will saves, she takes no action.
Stock smacks the beetle attacking him, but then is also stunned. So is Dorbin.
Zanderallen charges in to help Bart and slams down on Beetle 6.

Looking between the taurs legs he sees someone who is in serious danger. "I'M COMING DORBIN! Get off him, don't you know half-elves don't taste good!" he yells while thinking, 'Sorry Bart, hopefully beetle is tastier than taur', as he passes around Bart and tries to interpose himself between the Rapke and Dorbin. ------------------------ Double move to AA48 making as much noise as possible to attract the attention of Rapke 8.

Micah winces when he feels the rapke's claw find an opening in his armor. Well, that WAS the plan he thinks, grateful that the reptile is ignoring the defenseless dwarf for now.

Zanderallen's joy at getting the Rapke off of Drobin is quite literally cut short as the beast finds every hole in his armor. Wincing in pain at the wounds he is glad the venom doesn't seem to be effecting him yet. Bartomus felt a tingle, a tingle that wasn't fear but like the nerves of his legs were actually awake.
He looked about and tried to yell, tried to warn the others that the rapkes were moving in on them. But all he could do was get out something that sounded like a new born infant was channeling a whale. The tingle was moving though and he could fell the muscles in his arms and neck relax.

Stohp still stands, helpless, forced to watch as the battle goes on around her. It's worse then all of those times she nearly died herself. At least when she was unconscious she wasn't aware. To stand by and do nothing is torture. I have to DO something.

Glancing around at the Shields current situation, he imagines he hears his father say, One problem at a time, Micah. He mentally responds to his father that issues in the forge are a bit less critical than on the battlefield. Nonetheless, he accepts the wisdom and focuses on keeping Stock safe for now.
Eventually, he reasons, the indomitable dwarf will snap out of it and then the tide of battle will change.

Rapke 7 scampers away from the lightning bolt, and back into the grass.

He could feel more of his muscles respond to the constant commands he was trying to send them. The lightening bolt from the sky made him want to jump, and part of him tried to jump, but he didn't move much more than twitch.
He tried talking, he felt his tongue move and he said aloud,"We want to be with whoever called down the lightening I think."

Stohp is now stunned, poisoned (saves of 20 and 12), and probably going to get KO'd in one round. Typical really. Then again, the last time she'd been this badly beaten was the zombie fight. She's a bit surprised at that realization; seems that she has been getting better at this whole adventuring thing after all.

If willpower could free Stohp, she'd be running around free as a lark. Sadly he can only look out of the corner of his eye as he is furiously engaged with the Rapke in front of him. Parrying and blocking with an edge of desperation his counter attacks are weak and poorly aimed. Bartomus still couldn't move, and he saw movement off to his right. He began to sweat when he realized that the movement had to be one of the rapke. He willed himself to at least move his head, even the slightest. He felt the muscles respond, but it was as if he was underwater. Everything was moving slow, very slow. Dorbin’s leopard appears and launches itself at the nearby rapke on the opposite side of Zander, flanking the creature. It leaps into action, bites down on the creature and attempts to hold on while it slashes with its claws. Dorbin look over and sees that one Rapke isn’t advancing, but another is approaching Bart. With Stock yelling, he figures that one is not going to last long, so Dorbin reaches into another pocket and throws a little bit of butter in Bart’s direction.

Micah cries out wordlessly as the rapke strikes home. Then, when he realizes Stock is recovering, his grimace twists into a pain distorted grin. He then calls upon Domi for healing, but his concentration is too strained by the pain to release much power.

A leopard appears behind Rapke 8, and attacks. It bites and claws the animal, but is unable to grab it (CMD 30).
Dorbin casts a Grease spell under Rapke 7. The animal manages to stay upright. Dorbin make yet another Fort save DC13 (save0/5) or take 1d3 Dex damage.
Zanderallen overcomes the poison (two consecutive saves – no more saves required), heals himself, and slashes into Rapke 8.
Micah fights off the poison, and provides Stock some healing. Micahmake another Fort save DC13 (save1/2) or take 1d3 Dex damage.
-- Again, a lightning bolt strikes Rapke 11.
-- Rapke 8 is pretty shredded, and with a high pitched chirp, retreats into the grass.
Rapke 7 also retreats.
Rapke 11 shifts its gaze from the unmoving Stohp to the very much moving Stock, and comes to a decision. With a last regretful glance at the taur, it too retreats into the grass.
