hitching a ride.

OOC: Sorry guys, work has started back up and I have to make my posts earlier now.

Owen begins to get the party together, but maybe gets his directions mixed up as to where you are headed.

Mack: seedy back allies, cut throats and thieves, but also some really neat mushrooms growing on a dung heap. perhaps the magic kind.

Atlas: you armor feels good, it almost seems you can feel it pulse with the life of the Sargrass.

Armand: comments on the soberness of a sailor, ponders if he should stay or go, and puzzles the timing of the captains return. as he ponders these things there is a shout from down the dock and the sailor at the desk jumps up I'll be the son of a prairie pig! It's the Captain! AND E'S GOT MARK WITH HIM! HEY FELLAS, MOVE YOUR TAILS, THE CAP'N GOT MARK WITH HIM..HE'S ALIVE! the boat seems to start swarming with people, all rushing to the gunnels and leaning over the boards, a cheer rises up from the deck as they catch a view of the captain and Mark, albeit on a stretcher and being carried by two longshoremen. The sailor points to two of the men, and his voice changes, becoming more authoritative, You Tom, and Barry, don't just stand there go get Mark, We'll not let a member of our crew be carried aboard by strangers, same as we wont let'em be carried off!. The two spring to action and soon have the load transferred to themselves. once to the ship, strangely, they go through a boarding proceedure and a changing of the guard, once finished the Captain turns to you, He's an older man, maybe in his 60's but still hale and hearty as only an active life can make you, his face is cruelly handsome, but you can see that he cares deeply for his men, in a rich baritone he addresses. you. Are you the Cleric that saved my boy?

‘Osul: studies the strange geography of the Sargrass plains, and agrees with the idea of taking a skiff to the Forest of faith.

Boerdir ?

Elyngael ?

Yurr'Neshi?

Beordir nods accommodatingly and heads for the medical tent his companions were in. Except they are not there when he gets there. Momentarily confused, he looks around, then shrugs and heads for the marketplace hoping to happen across some of them. Except none of them are there either.

As he's considering what's next, Owen waves him over and he joins the rest of the group at the docks. He's just getting out his book to show everyone his drawing when Owen brings out the Cartographers map. Subtly putting his book away, he looks at the map nodding.

"There's a bandit gang called the Baron's men that prey on travelers. I want to tell Armand about then as their leader is rumored to follow Martau."

"I think we need a plan, or at least a ... a schedule. We don't know if we will be going home through Skyhook, we don't know how soon we need what we came for, and we do not yet know what reasonable (and unreasonable) delays will impact our journey."
"If we are not leaving before morning, I would like to spend some time aloft over the city, river and grass - get a broader sense of place I'm not getting on the ground. While I'm on the ground, I would like to spend some time amongst the druids — I need to understand more about them and what they do here beyond healing. In so doing I also hope to learn a little more about myself."
"Lodgings, dinner,... if we aren't off this afternoon."

He looks up obliquely at the sun, trying to guage the passage of time.

Armand pauses and beings keeping Neshi informed of the translation.

The fates have brought us together. Hearing your request he grins even broader Aye! I'd be glad to have you all aboard, I cannot thank you enough for saving Mark. Owen ?

Mack: the thug blanches at the appearance of Squeever Rapkey! what is that thing? he looks at the squirrel, at you, at the offered mushrooms and back again several times before finally deciding to cut his losses. he grabs the mushrooms, make a really pathetic threat display with is dagger then turns and runs off. with the quick decision making of an anemic sloth, acne scars and fighting moves learned from having a poor imagination and no training, this guy has probably made the biggest score in his life as a bandit. Yes, things are looking up for unnamed bandit #56...aw heck...lets just call him Horace.

Atlas: and ‘Osul: it takes ya'll a while to find him, you'd think a green mage would be trying to get with nature, but he's poking around back allies terrorizing the thieves guild.

Armand: apparently the crew of the ship is a musical bunch, before the second verse is out of your mouth a harmonica, a guitar and some hide drums are out and they are trying to match the tune, Eric gives the musicians a dirty look, but does not move to interrupt the song. To their credit, as soon as the song is done they get back to work. Eric apologizes for the poor lodging. The ship is a fast freighter, designed more for speed than bulk cargo, but there is ample room in the hold. and sleeping in a hammock is supposed to be quite comfortable. he cautions you to not light a fire down here, there are inflammable materials. he lines out the feeding schedule, 1st bell is at sunup, breakfast 1/2 hr past 1st bell. Brunch is at 6th bell, Lunch is at 10th bell. Supper 14th bell and Dinner 18th bell. Cookie has snacks and leftovers in the larder, but the captain don't cotton to sit down meals after dark. so it's eat on your feet. no food in the hold. attracts rats

Boerdir according to the Eric, you have about 18 hrs before they ship takes off.

Elyngael A steady line of Longshoremen ferry good to the dock, the capstan and a yardarm are used to bring the pallets aboard. it's all very well put together and every man has their place and knows what to do. One of the men, a supervisor of some sort introduces himself. Ma'am. I'm Joachim, you look like you are wanting to be helpful. I have a job for you and your cat if you are of a mind to help.
with that he leads you down to the hold. rats..every ship has them, and it's a constant fight to keep them under control. If that cat of yours is any good it would help us out a lot and make your stay a lot more comfortable if you could put a dent the the population for us.

Yurr'Neshinow that you are settled, perhaps a nap is in order, upon waking the +3 bonus to language rolls may help a lot.

Just in case it isn't known, there is not a catacombs portal here, and no one here has ever heard of the catacombs.

Mack is found, the crew gets a berth and Elyngael is put to hunting rats. The loading goes on throughout the night and the space inside the hold gets a fuller and fuller. there is still ample room for all of you though, Armands song catches on and you hear the crew begin to sing it, and then after a while, the Longshoremen start to sing it. at one point everybody is singing and a pretty good men's choir sound comes from the mix. if there is any last minute things you want to do in this town before you leave speak now or forever hold your peace.

Owen, tired from his journey is content to retire early to his hammock.

Mack: teases about rasing a rat army...but is he teasing?

Atlas: is excited to get going.

Armand: content that he has brought the gift of a new song to the sailors, sets back and relaxes.

‘Osul: decides that right now, a few hours from setting sail is the time to start a conversation with a druid. sure. you find a druid acolyte mucking the chamber pots in the predawn light. what do you ask him?

Boerdir you find a wax tablet easily enough, printers usually have things of this nature. what do you trade for it? (wax is inexpensive enough that the novelty of a silver coin would probably get you 5 tablets.

Elyngael in the few hours you hunt you get about 15 rats. you are certain there are more hiding in the cargo, but they are in places to tight and too hidden for you to get to them.

Yurr'NeshiTakes a cat nap.

with practiced ease and professionalism, the crew casts off from the grass side docks, the wind is not quite blowing in the proper direction to get them to the place that they are going so they have to tack and quarter into the wind. as they get away from land, and get on a good soild tack, Mark comes up on deck, to the cheers of all the crew, he grins and waves, before going over to the wheel and taking it in hand. there is a few moments of quiet, with not but the creaking of ropes and rigging and the gentil sussruss of the gass rubbing the bottom of the craft. the sailor with the guitar starts up playing a riff over and over agin, the sailor with the hide drums comes in, and then Mark starts to sing. He has a clear voice, but with character, and his voice seems to fit the song he sings perfectly.

Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.
It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend
And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.
Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Fantasy, it gets the best of me
When I'm sailing
All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony
Won't you believe me?
Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free
Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me
And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity
Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see.
Believe me.
Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
And soon I will be free

When the chorus comes in, the whole ship sings with it. every sailor, even the captain. it's beautiful. and when it's done everybody laugh and cheers. you guess that this is some ritual that the crew has, and that without Mark, it would have been over.

thats about the most exciting thing that happens for a while, you can get some pointers on sailing, and specifically grass sailing if you wish, there is wildlife to watch, the sailors even put up some nets to catch Praire swallows, they are sightless flying birds, but they are delicious when cookie cooks them up that night. Sadly the wind does not change direction and you can tell that it frustrates the captain. A month into the journey he has you all come in for a private brunch.

The wind is forcing my hand. I'll not sail through the red weed infected areas, that's a disaster wating to happen. but the only other routes i can take with this wind but me in the barons territory. I'm fast but I cannot outrun their schooners, and when the baron sends out a rading party, well it more folk that my crew can handle. but I have no choice. you said you would help, I'd hoped not to use you, but it looks like that's off the table. I need to know two things. are you still willing to fight and are you any good at it?

Oh yes! by this point in the journey everyone no matter how poorly they roll will be fluent in this common dialet.

So much so that he asked the captain if he could take a regular shift as he learned. "Best to make good use of my time or I'll get fat and slow" he says with a smile.

At the mention of the Baron and his men Atlas perks up. "I'm looking forward to removing this hazard from your journey now and forever. Is there anything you can tell us about them in preparation? Do they have any specific strengths or weaknesses?"

Over the month, I work on building my friendly rat army, training them, mostly, to try to avoid Khan, and bring back anything interesting they might find. I reward them with cheese. I make good use of my druid spells over the month to assist in their training, and especially casting cantrips on them continually.

Beordir trades a small bird carved from ash that emits a sharp whistle when blown for a couple of wax tablets in the marketplace before returning to the sailing vessel.

Over the month of travel, Beordir also spends quite a bit of time getting familiar with the sailing vessel. Given the relative speed and potential pursuit, he pays particular attention to things that stop it's forward motion.

After a month at ease, the warning at the brunch is a dash of cold water. He sobers up quickly and attends more fully to the conversation. He nods along with his companions and adds, "We signed on to arrive at our destination. If the Baron attempts to halt our journey, we will fight. We have protected the Tree of Parting for quite a long time, quite successfully. We can help you quite a bit, I think."

To the acolyte, he asks how he came to be a druid. He tries to direct the conversation toward the support he has from mentors, and what he is looking forward to as his training progresses. He looks to see if there are any remarkable differences between being a druid here, or at home, and compared to what he saw in Plateau City.

"Captain, before we came to Skyhook, a manfri called Mahyawu said that water was scarce and so is valueable out here on the plain...", he pauses, considing everything around him, and corrects himself. "...out here on The Plain. He even said, "remember that to survive". But since arriving, and up until we left port, there was no shortage of water. Can you please enlighten us?"

Over the month he pitches in, spends time aloft in elemental and avian forms, and hones his learned spells.

Owen still snoozing.

Mack: you are actually able to get about 25 rats to approach you. what do you want to teach them?

Atlas: captain: well in general, the barons men perfer coordinated attacks. they'll have fast skiffs out looking for targets, the skiffs will signal the patrol group and they will work to set up an ambush. I can probably avoid the ambush, but though a stern chase is a long chase, it's a chase that they will win. they'll fire at us with ship mounted ballista till they get in close, then it's crossbows to clear the decks. then they board. and it's not just one ship..it's usually 3 or more.

Armand: the captain speaks. I've never heard of the Baron himself leading his men, but that does not stop them from calling his name when they attack. sure, catch a vessel on fire and it puts an end to things really quickly, the problem is what works on them works on us. and if they have a halfway competent mage, fires can be controlled.

‘Osul: you get an interesting story from the druid, it has to do with the history of the movement here. it started out as a group of monks who were dedicated to letting the sargrass mutate into whatever it would become. there was a split, the Druids...they believe that the Sargrass must eventually give way to the Forests, while the Manfri, want the Sargrass to remain, eternal. the captain replies. Aye, the river is the only steady source of water for over 1500 miles. the Sargrass controls all the water in the area, some of the grasses put down roots to the water table, and if you don't know what you are doing trying to get water from the grasses can kill you with poison. the beings of the plains can smell water for miles and if you camp out on the plain...you can expect an attack everytime you open your water bota. We shipped with over 5 tons of potable water, but as things stand, we'll probably run out of water a few days before we reach the mountains. yes water on the plains is no joke

Boerdir the particular wood that these vessels are made of repels the grass like wood repels water, so the boats float on top of the dense grass. anything that interrupts that could be of use. also, they cannot sail up a wall. like let's say a bare spot on the plain that they get tricked into sailing into. the ship is effectively grounded. most ships watch out for that with a keen eye though.

Elyngael during the float you see lots of wildlife, Rapkey, which look like a cross between a horse and velociraptor. You see a heard of Great Ranthom, the captain alters course around them, they can trap a ship. wild prarie pigs, which look like slugs. but are supposed to be good to eat. but water...not a drop. you actually see the Rapkey because they are following the ship because they can smell water.

Yurr'Neshi the captain shrugs. fire is not unheard of, but the baron's men, usually try to capture a ship intact, more slaves and loot that way. but if things look grim early enough, they might use fire.

Owen The Captain replies: Well all my boys can shoot a bow and use a spear, we have 3 ballistae we keep in general stores along with about 300 bolts. I've few scrolls, aye wind wall, couple of mass cable tourniquet (Mass Cure Moderate wounds), I also got a scroll of confusion and some grease spells, few fly spells, but I can't really use them all that well. they were left behind when our last mage left. It's hard to find a mage that wants to crew a ship.

[b]Mack:
you easily teach your rats to chew through rope on command. you also teach them to avoid Kahn, but they were already pretty good at that already, come to think of it, they were already pretty good a chewing through rope, now they do it on command though.

Atlas: ?

Armand: On green grass? you'll be hard-pressed to get it to burn, now you get into an area suffering from blight or water-starved and it'll go up like an inferno!, the yellow grass which some call whisky root, it burns good, . when he hears the fireball comment he laughs Aye! I'd imagine that a fireball would put a quick end to the unlucky recipient ship and all.

‘Osul: captain: You can create potable water? we have about 2 tons of water left. if I drop it at first sign of trouble, I can probably get another 3 knots of speed out of her. if we can do that with near a herd of Ranthorm...lots of Ifs, but the Ranthorm will mob the water, and the rapkey will too, it would create a large barrier between us and the pursuers that would allow us to escape, if they are all directly behind us, if we can find a herd near where we are when the chase starts...too many ifs. and if you give the beast's water, they don't look for their own water anymore, and they die when you stop, they also follow you back to civilization and the locals don't take kindly to sailors bringing a herd of wild animals into camp. The Sargrass has it's one way of doing things, only the tough survive, but that's the way the Sarr wants it, who am I to interfere?

[b]Boerdir

Elyngael Captain: Aye, that's been done before, they great beasts clear a wide swath, but it's a chess game manoeuvring to trap a ship and with multiple ships, it would probably be me that got trapped. Atlas: see's in Owen's plan the ultimate role of a fighter...shock trooper.

Armand: suggests that they keep a lookou...Oh! Mack's got it.

‘Osul: now eagle-eyed, performs the very definition of overwatch.

Boerdir Captain: well that's tricky. sure if we catch one we can take them out, but they are small ships and very fast, they also use some kind of sending scroll, I've heard tell from others that the craft sometimes never get out of site before the squad shows up.

Elyngael captain: Aye, but we need to be mindful of any advantage we can gain, I'll not drop the water if we can help it, but I won't put it off the table.

Yurr'Neshi Wood, fire, there's a weakness. the fact that you are a fast transport, vs, presumably warships. the crew seems competent, and have buckets of sand stationed around to fight fires, with the potential for violent action, they have material stationed to block incoming fire and to jettison when needed. any weakness you can see, the sailors have a ready mitigation in place to deal with it. problem being, no plan survives first contact with the enemy.

with plans in place, the ship sails on. Mack and Elyngael take turns at the crows nest, while 'Osul takes the Eagles eye view. they sailors change subtly, where it was linen shirts bandanas and clasp knives you begin to see chain cuirass, helmets and spears begin to show up. the Ballista is broken out and pintles mounted to hold them. barrels of bolts staged where they can be accessed quickly. bandages are laid out and the whole demeanour of the ship changes. the days drag on. the waiting is intolerable, yet the dread of what may come, intolerable as well. it's madding

three days pass before there is a shout from the crows nest and a simultaneous screech from flying 'Osul. glass is broken out and in the distance you see a small ship, making it's way away from you on the horizon, about 5 miles away.

Owen reminds everyone that this is a scout ship, not an attack ship, further he asks everyone but Armand to get below decks.

Mack: small ship, more of a canoe with a sail, single occupant, moving away from you the level of detail at this range precludes further description.

Atlas: perhaps remembering the time with the bandits is excited, to say the least, to kill the bandit leader.

Armand: The captain says (and this is translated to player movement from captain movement) Our ship moves at about 60" The warships can move at about 65" Like i said, if we drop the water I can maybe get 2" or 3" more out of her...enough to draw the case out for a day or so. I've been heading obliquely towards our destination once the chase is on, I'll head there directly, hopefully, I can make this chase get us further onward instead of spending more time in the Barons lands.

Boerdir captain: Aye, we are large and proud, the scouts are small and timid, for us to see them before they see us would take a really stupid scout. Well...I'm hoping to draw the chase out, normally in such a case you run as fast as you can, hoping to get outside their territory before they catch you. The miners run a few galley a day or two out from the mine, if we can get under their protection the warship will break off, no sailing vessel wants to face a galley. thing is, we are still a week away from the border. we are going to have to fight. I'm hoping to keep them held out while you guys run interdiction on them. if you can set the ships on fire, or the sails we can get enough distance on them that they can't catch us.

Elyngael nope you are good.

Yurr'NeshiWood, fire, there's a weakness. the fact that you are a fast transport, vs, presumably warships. the crew seems competent, and have buckets of sand stationed around to fight fires, with the potential for violent action, they have material stationed to block incoming fire and to jettison when needed. any weakness you can see, the sailors have a ready mitigation in place to deal with it. problem being, no plan survives first contact with the enemy.

everyone is on high alert! the day passes on, and into the night. The ship runs dark, and the lieutenants make sure that everyone is either barefoot or has rags muffling their boots, no smoking, and no talking above a whisper.

with the grey of the morning, there is a surprise. two warships passed you during the night and are running on either side of you about 400 yards and in front of you 1/2 of a mile. silently the captain turns to port, and you get 3/4 of a mile on the Starboard ship and bit less than that on the Port ship. you notice a 3rd ship behind the two, maybe two miles away. it looks like they were going to catch you in a pincer movement, but you slipped it.

"I think it would be best to engage them one at a time."

Armand ponders briefly. "That said we have some options. Tactic 1: get close enough, fireball some sails, when they slow pull away. Tactic 2: get close enough cast fly and invisibility on a couple of people go over, cut their anchor stay, cut their rudder lines. The anchor drops and they swing around madly, taking them out of the fight for awhile. Again we sail away one less component in the fight. Tactic 3: Get really close, utterly and showingly devastate one of the ships leave it's burning hulk behind for the others to consider."

Thursday April 19th, 2018 8:02:38 PM

Owen gathers the group together belowdecks, calling for the Fly, Wind Wall, and Cure scrolls. He speaks to everyone: "Alright, I can make seven of us invisible. Armand, you're good to stay here and use the Wind Walls and Mass Cure Moderate Wounds? I'll make us invisible first and then use scrolls to make us fly. Yurr'Neshi and I will fireball the starboard ship into oblivion; the rest of you take the port ship. Target any mages first. Sound like a plan?"

If there is general agreement he casts Invisibility on everyone but Armand, Yurr'Neshi, and himself; then Greater Invisibility on himself and Yurr'Neshi, and then uses the Fly scrolls on every member of the party. Everyone would have roughly 8 minutes of flight and invisibility. Remember that you get a bonus of +4 on your Fly checks from the spell.

Owen Puts fort a viable plan. The captain agrees. Aye, at the rate we are going they first ship will be on us in...8 hrs or so, the 2nd close to night fall. we might can lose the 3rd if we are lucky.

[b]Mack:
in your minds eye, your "Anja" your vison immolates the ships, but your minds eye is not reality and instead you notice that the lead ship has about 35 to 40 people on it. Oh! and look they are setting up a ballista...no three...no 4...5! 5 ballista on the fo'c'sle, fighting top and quarterdeck.

Atlas: feels the song of battle thrum within him.

Armand: voices options, how close do they get before you cast?

‘Osul: ponders the grass

Boerdir ?

Elyngael leaves kahn to guard the ship as she steps forward to recieve the spells.

Yurr'Neshi Agrees with Owen.

DM note: spellcasters. how close do you let the ship get before you cast your spells? post your answers please.

after the Ballistas are set up the ones on the fo'c'sle and fighting top, begin to lob bolts your way periodically. they fall well short, but the distance gets closer as the day moves on, you can hear the jeers and catcalls of the other ship, and see as well, mooning, rude gestures, other insults they lob your way whenever they think they have your attention.

"I'll forgo the Fly scroll, if others need it. I'm more interested in seeing (or not) how we are going to all fly over without, you know, colliding into invisble each other and crashing down under the grass top? hurry up and wait. 8 hours? Really? At what distance/time does their catcalls and buttocks become audible/visible enough to be a nuisance?

Armand will cast Magic Vestment at 30 minutes before they are in range.

"We are not going to be able to hit the two lead ships at the same time. The distance is not right."

"I'm pretty sure a Ballista bolt is not going to be traveling in the air over 1 minute. If we want to send a party over, flying and invisible to hit the first ship with I'd say wait till then. Owen I think you said Fly would last 4 minutes, that's 1 minute travel, 2 minutes fight, 1 minute back. Maybe we should save some of the fireball spells for the second ship when it comes closer."

"I can cast Bless right as the last Fly spell is cast then that group would have +1 to hit etc. or I can wait to cast Bless when the 2nd ship is closer and then everyone on board will have +1 for that fight."

"Osul, I will become invisible and fly first, since I have a ranged weapon. As soon as I shoot my bow I will become visible, therefore, solving the problem of seeing each other. Anyone else who has ranged weapons could do the same - we will just pre-set our first target, and fly out at slightly different increments so that we are separated." Elyngael suggests. She also casts barkskin on herself.

Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 15/12/13; HP: 40/40; CMD: 17
Saturday April 21st, 2018 1:14:44 PM

Owen looks about at the collected group and smiles grimly, memories from battles in the Contested Kingdoms flashing before his mind's eye. "Alright, here's the plan: We'll split into two groups, air support and a boarding party. Yurr'Neshi and I will be the air support attacking the starboard ship, while everyone else (minus Armand) is in the boarding party attacking the port ship. Once those enemy ships have closed to just shy of the range of their ballistae their attention will be focused on the ships rather than on us. We'll stick together in the air by holding hands; Yurr'Neshi and I will hold hands, as will each member of the boarding party in a chain. Here's the signal to attack: Once the boarding party is 120 feet or so away from the enemy ship, Elyngael will let go of her neighbor in the boarding party chain. Since we can fly at about ten feet per second, that will give her about six seconds to ready her bow and arrows. When she fires a full sortie, she will become visible. That's the cue for the rest of the boarding party to swoop in and attack, while the air support bombard the other enemy ship."

During the wait, Owen tries to assuage Armand's concerns. "We can shoot fireballs over 700 feet, so the air support can definitely hit at the same time as the boarding party. Plus, if the boarding party can manage to take over their ship, they won't need to fly back."

He casts the Invisibility spells and Fly scrolls just as the first ballista bolts start to splash near the ship. "Make sure your team is holding hands before I make you invisible! Remember to target their mages first!", he calls to the Wardens. In the hurrying buildup to combat, he is unsure whether Mack is invisible or slipped away while he was distracted. He figures that the little rascal will want to be causing havoc on enemy ships rather than the friendly one, though. Then he takes Yurr'Neshi's hand and flies up toward the starboard ship.
