Kiwina is willing to act as captain, although he plans to hold off on taking the potion for the moment. With a steady crew helping, it should not be too hard to follow the wyrm. (Roll to avoid sailing over the wyrm = 25 plus aid from the others.)

"Falco, can you find out how long our friend expects it will take to reach this place?" If an encounter seems imminent before any further change, Kiwina will take the potion then.

Addressing the barmbles question Falco smiles.

"Friendly? Not so much but they were quite amazing as was the ship. It was full of holes but instead of sinking it was carried by several water elementals. There was some powerful magic at work to say the least. Between that ship and now this ship that sails on grass I feel like we are living in an epic story."

He pauses thinking his excitement might be out of place.

"I am sorry about the others you sailed with. It must be hard to lose so many you know and have to throw in with a bunch of strangers. How long do you think this journey will take ym new friend?"

While talking Falco also spends some time casting detect magic in front of the boat hoping to see any magical threat before they run into it.

To Rolth “My name? Um.. I don’t want to sound dishonest but Brambles don’t have names. We are normally called Bramble or our rank, like Recruit. Umm.. I had a name once, before I was turned into a Bramble.. What was that name..” The Bramble pauses then adds to Falco “That is amazing. I heard about the ship, don’t recall the name but I never had a chance to see it. I understand that all ships within the Taur Islands are now destroyed. You all are great sailors. I am proud to stand with you.”

The trip stretched out as did the day. Thirty-six hours days to be exact. The tatzelwurm weaved in and out of the grass, occasionally meeting over wurms. After a long day dusk began but of course it stretched on forever. The tatzelwurm stopped to rest.
The recruit stood at the wheel smiling and full of the same energy he started with.
The rash covered his right side. The bramble stopped the boat and itched furiously.
“If you all want to rest, I’ll be ok. I think the little wurm wants to rest. I’ll mop the deck and fix the sails. I think I saw some places to rest but I’m good. I don’t need any rest… I’m a bit hungry but I’m not sure what I want. I think I’m going to check out the mess. I believe it has one but he then noticed a native bird.

(Know Nature: spoiler=14 Pass)
I believe that is a blind swallow, I've heard they are tasty when roasted, not sure lighting a fire on a wooden boat in the middle of a grass plane is the best idea tho. Is there a fire pit on board?
Also Falco are you able to find out how long the wurm will need to rest. Potentially we need to set up a sleep roster, these weird days will start to take a toll at some stage.
Additionally has anyone thought about what to do once we sight a Rapke, I've heard them described as an elephant sized dinosaur - not something I'd want to tangle with without a plan?

Tsak, realising he is rambling a little looks somewhat abashed and apologetic toward his companions. Maybe the long days are getting to him already...

(Roll: nature = 13)

Kiwina considers the course they have followed so far. If they have been travelling straight, then the ship could be kept on that course through the night, with the wurm on board. "Falco, what can you find out about where we're going and how long it will take? Should we keep going, or stop for the night?" Of course, it could be that they are going to stop at the mountains anyway.

Kiwina does not want the Bramble to be unwatched through the night. He plans on trying the other remove disease potion in the morning if his condition hasn't improved by then.

"How were you turned into a bramble?" he asks their reluctant guest. "What was your name before that?"

(OOC: Could we have gotten some sleep in shifts during the long day? I don't think we would have gone 36 hours straight unless there was no other option. That could also provide some healing for folks who are wounded.)

Rolth agrees that we should set watches and get some sleep, because this seems to be quite a dangerous place. "With respect to the Rapkes, perhaps we should keep our distance and just pepper it with ranged fire? This ship is quite fast, so that should buy us at least some time before we have to engage up close. At that point, perhaps we can surround it, to keep it from focusing on any one of us. One other idea is to find a dead one, and take its claw. Are they intelligent enough to talk to? If so, maybe one would lead us to a Rapkes graveyard, out of self preservation if nothing else. Meanwhile, does anyone have some healing spells to use before we go to sleep?"

“Ronnie… Rapke.. Umm.. Ramsey.. Yeah.. it’s Ramsey. You haven’t heard the story of Caryln. Oh, it’s quite a story. It has always been seen as a tale on Minotaur Island but I tell you this it’s true. From what I understand she is upset over the kidnapping and killing of the Prince. She took it out on us minotaur, converting us all to Bramble.”
“I didn’t know there was a Prince in Taur Islands.. I don’t know much else. When the meteorites started falling, it caused all sorts of chaos. It killed many on the island. Sargent found one of the craters and we then stepped into the portal. That’s how we got here.”

Kiwina forces himself back to sleep until his watch, which is not an easy task at first, but he reminds himself that if he were really bad off the wurm would be pretty obviously annoyed with him.
(OOC: Ah….. ;))

The tatzelwurm approaches Ramsey, pushing its way through to inspect the infected bramble. After a tense moment the wurm turns, sniffs the air and slowly heads near Kiwina. The wurm waits till Sable leaves. It approaches Kiwina looks to Falco and settles nearby.

The Petals rest. The darkness stretches on till everyone is rested.
The sun reluctantly peeks from the horizon.

Finnian starts awake, and rushes over to check on Kiwina's condition. He encourages Kiwina to add his own healing arts to the efforts of his fellow Petals, as the failure to shake of the disease could have catastrophic effects.

(OOC: Make your heal check Steve, you only need a DC10 to succeed in aiding our efforts. I'll defer to the DMs whether you then need a save too. If so, a hero point would probably be in order, because even with a bonus from the healing we all did, you would only have a 50-50 chance to make the roll.)

Once Kiwina is safe, Finnian will look to Falco to talk to the wurm and see if it knows where we can find a rapkes or otherwise help our quest.

The wurm grumbles and inspects the bramble, Kiwina and the rest of the deck.
The worm acknowledges Falco then makes its it's way down the hill of the boat. Once on the ground the worm begins to head East of the mountains.
Ramsey wakes up refreshed and smiling. “I am so happy. You are heroes. I am under your debt. Please allow me to guide you. Do we want to follow the tatzelwurm?
“Those mountains are at least two days away,” Ramsey says. “... but we are heading East. I think I saw a map in the Captain's quarters. I was up all night wandering around. Also, there is a galley below with food.”
The Petals work to get the sails up and the ship starts to move. Which way do you head?

Falco, did you let the wurm know that is what we are seeking? Kiwina, I agree that searching the ship is a good idea, and that map Ramsey mentioned sounds worth checking out. Some of us should keep a strong watch above decks, though, because the plains have a reputation for being deadly. Perhaps our bow-wielders and an arcanist could keep an eye out while we search?" "Fire on a ship is bad enough when you're surrounded by nothing but water, but out here in a heat wave? that sounds quite dangerous!

Can we at least wait a while and see if the wind returns before taking a risk like that? And what can we do to make sure that breathing the fumes of burning grass won't infect us all with the blight?

Elyas looks around sheepishly, realizing how loud and uncharacteristic his outburst was. He takes some water and goes to sit by himself in the shade of one of the sails

I agree with Falco, why risk going out on foot in the grasses if the wind comes back this evening? there was plenty of wind to sail by earlier today, and we have no reason to think it won't come back tomorrow. let's not take a risk if it's not needed!

If the rest of the party wants to leave the ship, Elyas will follow, but it is not an action he is in favor of at this point.

Rolth suggests they build a large fan. Kiwina finds an abundance of tools. These tools should allow everyone to build whatever they need. Below Kiwina finds a strange iron box. Kiwina only Highlight to display spoiler: { This looks very much like a fire box. A large boiler stands to it’s right. If you bang on the iron it sounds like it is full of water.}
Gothruk is struck by the heat for 5 dmg non-lethal damage. He agrees to go with Rolth.
Falco is uncomfortable with the idea of leaving the boat to search the razor sharp grasses. They suggest waiting for the wind to pick up.
Finnian keeps watch in the heat as Tsak waits.

Kiwina calls out, "Hey, guys, there's something interesting down here! Looks like it will heat water, and sounds like its full."

He finds that the box next to the boiler seems to be a fire box. If you follow the thick pipes they lead you to the rear of the boat but near here is a gear that seems to be connected to a generator. A good engineer or crafty person could hook up a belt to it.

Sable finds a grass sickle. A medium sized tool that can be used to cut grass and is a melee weapon.

Falco Ambersier proposes using the wood from the windmill for fuel.

This would definitely be more efficient as well as safe and grass can be used to supplement the limited wood supply.

Rolth suggests using Kiwina's block and tackle to lift the parts up onto the ship and proposes a clockwork mechanism to utilize the steam and Gothruk supplies the muscle to get the heaviest items on board.

Gothruk roll a Survival check or Fortitude save DC 15 and that non-lethal damage can be avoided.

Elyas and Finnian add to the design concept.

Collectively the petals seem to have come up with a feasible plan.

The questions are how long will it take and how much will the heat affect them while they toil in its construction?

First poster brave enough to do so should make an unmodified d20 roll to determine the time required to fabricate a working steam powered drive fan.

Result (note that the time needed was determined to account for the great suggestions)
>14 Four person hours
9 - 13 Eight person hours
4 - 8 Sixteen person hours
1 -3 Twenty-four person hours

The total time is the number of person hours required divided by the number of people working on the task rounding up. The minimum total time is one hour. It just takes that long to get everything together no matter how many people are working on it.

[Example one: Die Roll = 16, requiring four person hours. If four or more people work on this task, the total time is one hour.
Example two: die roll = 10, requiring eight person hours. Four people can complete this in two hours; six people working on it requires 1.5 hours which rounds up to two; eight people can do it in one hour.]

Anyone working on building the engine will need to make one Fort Save or Survival DC 15 check per hour or take 1d4 non-lethal damage.

Ramsey is visibly excited by your ingenuity and readily and deftly pitches in.
[OOC: his effort should be included in the total number of people working on the build.]

Sable, Rolth, Tsak, Elyas, Kiwina, and Ramsey work on the firebox and manages to not overheat in the oppressive warmth of the windless plain.

Falco avoids the heat and leaves the work to larger folk.

Finnian serves as lookout while continuing to work on his bow.
[OOC: Add 16 hours to your count.]

He sees a lot of grass, but not much else, not even the tatzlewyrm who currently is out of view.

While assembling the engine Kiwina asks "Ramsey, you never made it clear to me whose ship this was before we took it. I'm sure I asked. Had you ever sailed her before?"

Ramsey looks at the centaur with an puzzled expression on his face before answering, ”Yes, many times. Here and there. Why, almost everywhere.”

The petals successfully complete their contraption and fire it up. The belt bounces and snaps alarmingly, but then it seems to calm down as it grabs hold of the fan shaft. At first it seems that the rotating windmill fans will have no effect, then, ever so slowly, the ship starts moving forward.

As Tsak joins Finnian at the bow they both see sudden motion before them: the tatzlewyrm bursts forward from beneath the shade of the motionless vessel. Seeming exciting to be under way again, it leads the ship onward.

Note that characters heal 1 hit point per level per hour with rest. Thus, at night you should heal 3 hit points per hour.

About eight hours after the sun rises in the west, the watch sees a structure rising out of the grass directly in the ship’s path. Spending the day before in the sun wasn't too bad, but after the nights rest below deck the returning heat was twice as uncomfortable as before. [survival=13,if I cast endure elements on my self can I negate the damage?]

Rolth prepares for a fight and adds his own song.

Ramsey responds with applause and a hearty back slap.

Kiwina proposes a circling action before closing.

Sable prepares for a fight while taking a close look.

Falco struggles in the heat and supports attacking at range.

Tsak moves to the front of the ship, prepares his weapons and scans the surroundings.

Elyas proposes gaining more information before jumping to conclusions or action.

Finnian also suffers in the heat.
OOC: endure elements will not heal any damage already taken, but will prevent any further damage.

The ship approaches to within bowshot and takes a tour around the structure. As the Petals approach, it becomes clear that this is what appears to be a section of bridge. This remaining section of bridge runs east to west and is approximately forty feet wide. On one side four columns expand into arches, supporting a deck approximately forty feet above the plain. All but one of the columns has corresponding one on the other side. The match to the unpaired column has crumbled in a heap of stone and wood leaning against the one across from it.

The wooden deck has no parapet or wall. It appears to be made of sun-bleached wood with stone buttresses between the columns providing partial support to the wooden surface. The bridge is wind weathered and ancient, but the wood still seems to be mostly intact, probably due to the dry conditions of the plain.

Looking either direction reveals no sign or indication of any more remains of the bridge.

Rolth, despite the draining heat, will take his place in formation, and insist that Ramsey accompany us in the center of the formation, for his own safety. Sargrass Plains - "The Bridge to Nowhere" - DM Matt and John - 36 hr clock

Thursday April 26th, 2018 8:56:47 PM

The length of the bridge is approximately 200 feet on the longer side and 140 feet on the other side. It is 40 feet wide and 40 feet above the ground.

The deck of the ship is about 10 below the surface of the bridge. Anyone who can see the top of surface (taurs and Finnian) make a Perception DC 25 (Kiwina’s previous roll counts) Highlight to display spoiler: { On the surface of the bridge in the center, based on width and the longest length, rests an object about eight inches long and two inches at its widest point slightly curved and tapering to a point. As the ship circles, Kiwina vigilantly looks for any sign of a rapkes. He does not, but does see something else (see above).

Sable informs the others what he previously observed about the apparent sturdiness of the bridge--and the absence of their tatzlewurm guide. He waits for the rest of the party to assemble, and will take a point position in any advance to the bridge.

Falco smiles and asks Ramsey "Have you been here before? I would guess there is no way for boats to go any further, can’t sail on wood planks."

The bramble shakes his head in negation, then shrugs and mumbles ”That bridge goes nowhere….and comes from nowhere.”

Rolth makes plans for Ramsey and keeps an eye on the rubble. He does not see any sign of anything stirring or hiding in there.

Elyas is hesitant to get off the boat, but it does seem like that is going to be what is needed. He checks his crossbow in its sheath and watches out for danger.

Finnian is not enjoying the heat. He comes down from the crow's nest and joins the crew on the deck

Gothruk also swelters and looks for a way to get on the bridge. Tsak has similar questions. They soon realize that the ship is stocked with ropes, grappling hooks, and cargo nets. Given that the bridge is only ten feet higher than the deck of the ship, it would be possible to “board” it readily provided the ship was next to it.

Note that it the ship could be brought alongside and “moor” it to the bridge. This would require a Profession (Sailor) check DC 20 to successfully achieve without colliding into the structure.

The Roll20 map is updated. Please position she ship where desired. The DM arbitrarily placed it in the middle of the long side.

Sable sees no sign of the wurm and takes a close look at the surface of the bridge.

Tsak, Finnian, Gothruk and Elyas start to secure the ship.

Falco casts detect magic. Falco Highlight to display spoiler: {First round of detect magic: auras are present (of course this could be the items the Petals have). Check spell description for details on how detect magic works if you are unfamiliar.}

The moment the first line contacts the bridge, things drastically change. The temperature seems to drop about twenty degrees and the sky changes color, taking on a olive tinged greenish tint. An uproar of noise erupts from the surface of the plain from every direction, a cacophonous tumult sounding like the simultaneous rending of thousands of pieces of cloth.

On the bridge itself, the object begins to rise. The cause of clamor from the ground becomes apparent as strands of fiber, obviously ripped from the grass below, begin to swirl around the object, creating a swirling sphere spanning the width of the bridge with the object securely protected in its center. The globe increases in size and density until its diameter is about forty feet, placing the now hidden object centered within it about twenty feet above the bridge’s surface.

It may be a trick of the eye, but as the grass pieces swirl within and around the sphere, it seems that indiscernible figures appear and, as swiftly, dissolve into the whirling chaos.

The others, along with Ramsey, prudently guard the ship.

After the initial changes, things appear to stabilize. The globe continues to churn, emitting a faint greenish glow, with the grass fibers swirling into faintly discernible shapes before being broken by the chaotic motion. Now that the sphere is no longer forming and the tearing of the grass has ceased, the plain seems eerily silent, broken only by the breathing of each Petal and the susurration caused by the continuous revolution of the glowing ball of grass strands and magic.

Kiwina examines the sphere because he thought he glimpsed figures in it earlier and is trying to figure out what sort of creatures they might have been. (Perception = 19)

Unfortunately, I have never seen anything quite like this before. I do not know what is causing this sphere to exist, and I am not powerful enough to disrupt it with my own powers.

Perhaps we do need to interact with it, but I would still suggest not touching it ourselves. We should go about this carefully. Maybe throw rocks at the sphere, followed by arrows and simple spells like dancing lights.

Elyas is frustrated that he is unable to determine a better approach, and is quite nervous about what will happen when interacting with obviously powerful protective magics.

Rolth notes that the sphere popped up when the ship docked. Perhaps if a few of us were to unmoored the ship, the sphere would fade away? He wants to try that before any sort of contact with the Eldritch sphere.

"Right, I should have been more clear. By poke it I did not mean with a finger so some body part."

He looks around so any lose item nearby. A belaying pin would work well but anything we will. If he finds something he will lob it underhand at the sphere.

"I could shoot it, though that's probably not a great idea," Finnian says standing up and brushing himself off

Tsak and Kiwina keep close watch on the sphere.

Elyas is frustrated that he is unable to determine a better approach, and is quite nervous about what will happen when interacting with obviously powerful protective magics.

Rolth proposes taking the ship away before interacting directly with the globe.

Finnian proposes shooting it.

Falco puts actions to words and tosses a nearby belaying pin into grassy globe.

The pin strikes the roiling ball of glowing green grass and bounces harmlessly off. However, the point where it struck begins to change. The swirling strands there concentrate around the point of contact. Tsak, Kiwina, Falco as well as anyone who succeeds at a DC 15 perception check Highlight to display spoiler: {A faint tendril of greenish light lashes out of the point where the pin struck and touches Falco on the top of his head. Just as rapidly it retracts back into the sphere like a recoiled whip.}
Falco only Highlight to display spoiler: {As the light touches Falco it feels like the caress of a sun warmed breeze passing across and through his entire body.}

Moments later, the mass of strands weave themselves together taking the form of a small bipedal creature about three feet tall. This creature nimbly drops out of the sphere onto the surface of the bridge. Fibers in its body writhe onto its two arms forming what appears to be a crossbow that it then lifts and points in the direction of Falco.

”EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKK!” screams Ramsey as he dashes down into the hold below the deck.

Kiwina prepares to fight the little grass creature, but does not approach it yet. He's a bit worried about accidentally hitting the sphere with his weapon, although there shouldn't be much risk while it's under the edge of the sphere. Maybe we could knock it off the edge.k

”Hey Guys, looks like it just made a grassy duplicate of Falco!”, yells Sable.

Perception 18

Sable fires twice (rapid shot) at the grass figure.

Hitting AC 14 and AC 17 (or AC 16 and AC 19 if the creature is a Monstrous Humanoid).
1st Arrow does 13 HP; 2nd does 11 HP of damage - or +2 more in each case if the creature counts as Monstrous Humanoid...

Tsak takes aim at the little creature, but does not fire his bow.
Petals, maybe we should try talking. We are all pointing weapons at it, why shouldn't it point one back. Also, what if every shot creates a new duplicate - we'll be overwhelmed?

Elyas holds at the ready, nervous about the new arrival.

Be careful, if it is a duplicate does that mean it has spell abilities like Falco?

Elyas holds an action to cast scorching ray at the creature if it makes an attack.

(Scorching Ray 20 to hit touch AC, 12 damage)

As the tendril touches his head Falco tenses and then relaxes as a warm caress passes over him. He puts up his arms.

"Petals, wait! The tendril felt like a sun warmed breeze. This may not be a fight. Lets try and talk to it."

{ooc: Know Arcana:13 and Nature: 21- what is this creature}

He looks at the creature and tries speaking first in common and then in Draconic and Elven if there is no response.

"Lower you bow. We are here to help bring the Sargrass back to the Wold. We need what is in that sphere to help."

Kiwina, cautious to not accidentally hit the sphere, holds off his attack.

Tsak takes aim at the little creature, but does not fire his bow and advises that attacking might create more duplicates.

Gothruk who drew his guisarme initially when he jumped onto the 'bridge' puts it away, holstered to his back and warns against aggression.

Finnian asks, “I agree maybe we shouldn't fight it, what do you think it is? Because I've not a clue."

Falco calls out, "Petals, wait! The tendril felt like a sun warmed breeze. This may not be a fight. Lets try and talk to it."

He addresses the creature, "Lower you bow. We are here to help bring the Sargrass back to the Wold. We need what is in that sphere to help." [b]

The creature responds by taking a shot at the halfling….

[b]Sable
had already starting firing. Both arrows bury into the grassy figure. It collapses into a pile of lifeless grass before it can get its shot off.

Elyas was ready to fire a scorching ray but Sable’s marksmanship made that unnecessary.

Elyas Highlight to display spoiler: {[OOC: Elyas may save that roll for his next attack, should it prove necessary.] }

A slight breeze carries away a few strands of the inanimate pile of grass that is all that remains of the grassy creature.

The globe of swirling grass and greenish light continues to churn on its spot upon the bridge.

Rolth examines the swirling pattern carefully, watching to see whether there is any predictable gap that can be discerned that might allow a creature or object to pass through. (Perception =21) If he spots one, he will point it out to the others, and suggest using either a rope and grappling hook or maybe some magic to see if we can work the item out of the center of the sphere. Alternately, one of our more nimble folk could try to leap into a gap and get the item.
