OOC: Sorry guys, work has started back up and I have to make my posts earlier now.
Owen begins to get the party together, but maybe gets his directions mixed up as to where you are headed.
Mack: seedy back allies, cut throats and thieves, but also some really neat mushrooms growing on a dung heap. perhaps the magic kind.
Atlas: you armor feels good, it almost seems you can feel it pulse with the life of the Sargrass.
Armand: comments on the soberness of a sailor, ponders if he should stay or go, and puzzles the timing of the captains return. as he ponders these things there is a shout from down the dock and the sailor at the desk jumps up I'll be the son of a prairie pig! It's the Captain! AND E'S GOT MARK WITH HIM! HEY FELLAS, MOVE YOUR TAILS, THE CAP'N GOT MARK WITH HIM..HE'S ALIVE! the boat seems to start swarming with people, all rushing to the gunnels and leaning over the boards, a cheer rises up from the deck as they catch a view of the captain and Mark, albeit on a stretcher and being carried by two longshoremen. The sailor points to two of the men, and his voice changes, becoming more authoritative, You Tom, and Barry, don't just stand there go get Mark, We'll not let a member of our crew be carried aboard by strangers, same as we wont let'em be carried off!. The two spring to action and soon have the load transferred to themselves. once to the ship, strangely, they go through a boarding proceedure and a changing of the guard, once finished the Captain turns to you, He's an older man, maybe in his 60's but still hale and hearty as only an active life can make you, his face is cruelly handsome, but you can see that he cares deeply for his men, in a rich baritone he addresses. you. Are you the Cleric that saved my boy?
‘Osul: studies the strange geography of the Sargrass plains, and agrees with the idea of taking a skiff to the Forest of faith.

Beordir nods accommodatingly and heads for the medical tent his companions were in. Except they are not there when he gets there. Momentarily confused, he looks around, then shrugs and heads for the marketplace hoping to happen across some of them. Except none of them are there either.
As he's considering what's next, Owen waves him over and he joins the rest of the group at the docks. He's just getting out his book to show everyone his drawing when Owen brings out the Cartographers map. Subtly putting his book away, he looks at the map nodding.
"There's a bandit gang called the Baron's men that prey on travelers. I want to tell Armand about then as their leader is rumored to follow Martau."

Mack: the thug blanches at the appearance of Squeever Rapkey! what is that thing? he looks at the squirrel, at you, at the offered mushrooms and back again several times before finally deciding to cut his losses. he grabs the mushrooms, make a really pathetic threat display with is dagger then turns and runs off. with the quick decision making of an anemic sloth, acne scars and fighting moves learned from having a poor imagination and no training, this guy has probably made the biggest score in his life as a bandit. Yes, things are looking up for unnamed bandit #56...aw heck...lets just call him Horace.
Atlas: and ‘Osul: it takes ya'll a while to find him, you'd think a green mage would be trying to get with nature, but he's poking around back allies terrorizing the thieves guild.
Armand: apparently the crew of the ship is a musical bunch, before the second verse is out of your mouth a harmonica, a guitar and some hide drums are out and they are trying to match the tune, Eric gives the musicians a dirty look, but does not move to interrupt the song. To their credit, as soon as the song is done they get back to work. Eric apologizes for the poor lodging. The ship is a fast freighter, designed more for speed than bulk cargo, but there is ample room in the hold. and sleeping in a hammock is supposed to be quite comfortable. he cautions you to not light a fire down here, there are inflammable materials. he lines out the feeding schedule, 1st bell is at sunup, breakfast 1/2 hr past 1st bell. Brunch is at 6th bell, Lunch is at 10th bell. Supper 14th bell and Dinner 18th bell. Cookie has snacks and leftovers in the larder, but the captain don't cotton to sit down meals after dark. so it's eat on your feet. no food in the hold. attracts rats
Boerdir according to the Eric, you have about 18 hrs before they ship takes off.
Elyngael A steady line of Longshoremen ferry good to the dock, the capstan and a yardarm are used to bring the pallets aboard. it's all very well put together and every man has their place and knows what to do. One of the men, a supervisor of some sort introduces himself. Ma'am. I'm Joachim, you look like you are wanting to be helpful. I have a job for you and your cat if you are of a mind to help. with that he leads you down to the hold. rats..every ship has them, and it's a constant fight to keep them under control. If that cat of yours is any good it would help us out a lot and make your stay a lot more comfortable if you could put a dent the the population for us.
Yurr'Neshinow that you are settled, perhaps a nap is in order, upon waking the +3 bonus to language rolls may help a lot.
Just in case it isn't known, there is not a catacombs portal here, and no one here has ever heard of the catacombs.
Mack is found, the crew gets a berth and Elyngael is put to hunting rats. The loading goes on throughout the night and the space inside the hold gets a fuller and fuller. there is still ample room for all of you though, Armands song catches on and you hear the crew begin to sing it, and then after a while, the Longshoremen start to sing it. at one point everybody is singing and a pretty good men's choir sound comes from the mix. if there is any last minute things you want to do in this town before you leave speak now or forever hold your peace.

with practiced ease and professionalism, the crew casts off from the grass side docks, the wind is not quite blowing in the proper direction to get them to the place that they are going so they have to tack and quarter into the wind. as they get away from land, and get on a good soild tack, Mark comes up on deck, to the cheers of all the crew, he grins and waves, before going over to the wheel and taking it in hand. there is a few moments of quiet, with not but the creaking of ropes and rigging and the gentil sussruss of the gass rubbing the bottom of the craft. the sailor with the guitar starts up playing a riff over and over agin, the sailor with the hide drums comes in, and then Mark starts to sing. He has a clear voice, but with character, and his voice seems to fit the song he sings perfectly.
Well, it's not far down to paradise, at least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find tranquility Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. It's not far to never-never land, no reason to pretend And if the wind is right you can find the joy of innocence again Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Fantasy, it gets the best of me When I'm sailing All caught up in the reverie, every word is a symphony Won't you believe me? Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free Well it's not far back to sanity, at least it's not for me And if the wind is right you can sail away and find serenity Oh, the canvas can do miracles, just you wait and see. Believe me. Sailing takes me away to where I've always heard it could be Just a dream and the wind to carry me And soon I will be free
When the chorus comes in, the whole ship sings with it. every sailor, even the captain. it's beautiful. and when it's done everybody laugh and cheers. you guess that this is some ritual that the crew has, and that without Mark, it would have been over.
thats about the most exciting thing that happens for a while, you can get some pointers on sailing, and specifically grass sailing if you wish, there is wildlife to watch, the sailors even put up some nets to catch Praire swallows, they are sightless flying birds, but they are delicious when cookie cooks them up that night. Sadly the wind does not change direction and you can tell that it frustrates the captain. A month into the journey he has you all come in for a private brunch.
The wind is forcing my hand. I'll not sail through the red weed infected areas, that's a disaster wating to happen. but the only other routes i can take with this wind but me in the barons territory. I'm fast but I cannot outrun their schooners, and when the baron sends out a rading party, well it more folk that my crew can handle. but I have no choice. you said you would help, I'd hoped not to use you, but it looks like that's off the table. So much so that he asked the captain if he could take a regular shift as he learned. "Best to make good use of my time or I'll get fat and slow" he says with a smile.

Over the month, I work on building my friendly rat army, training them, mostly, to try to avoid Khan, and bring back anything interesting they might find. I reward them with cheese. I make good use of my druid spells over the month to assist in their training, and especially casting cantrips on them continually.

Beordir trades a small bird carved from ash that emits a sharp whistle when blown for a couple of wax tablets in the marketplace before returning to the sailing vessel.
Over the month of travel, Beordir also spends quite a bit of time getting familiar with the sailing vessel. Given the relative speed and potential pursuit, he pays particular attention to things that stop it's forward motion.
After a month at ease, the warning at the brunch is a dash of cold water. He sobers up quickly and attends more fully to the conversation. DM Shane P Tuesday April 10th, 2018 11:24:36 PM Owen still snoozing.
Mack: you are actually able to get about 25 rats to approach you. what do you want to teach them?
Atlas: captain: well in general, the barons men perfer coordinated attacks. they'll have fast skiffs out looking for targets, the skiffs will signal the patrol group and they will work to set up an ambush. I can probably avoid the ambush, but though a stern chase is a long chase, it's a chase that they will win. they'll fire at us with ship mounted ballista till they get in close, then it's crossbows to clear the decks. then they board. and it's not just one ship..it's usually 3 or more.
Armand: the captain speaks. I've never heard of the Baron himself leading his men, but that does not stop them from calling his name when they attack. sure, catch a vessel on fire and it puts an end to things really quickly, the problem is what works on them works on us. and if they have a halfway competent mage, fires can be controlled.
‘Osul: you get an interesting story from the druid, it has to do with the history of the movement here. it started out as a group of monks who were dedicated to letting the sargrass mutate into whatever it would become. there was a split, the Druids...they believe that the Sargrass must eventually give way to the Forests, while the Manfri, want the Sargrass to remain, eternal. the captain replies. Aye, the river is the only steady source of water for over 1500 miles. the Sargrass controls all the water in the area, some of the grasses put down roots to the water table, and if you don't know what you are doing trying to get water from the grasses can kill you with poison. the beings of the plains can smell water for miles and if you camp out on the plain...you can expect an attack everytime you open your water bota. We shipped with over 5 tons of potable water, but as things stand, we'll probably run out of water a few days before we reach the mountains. yes water on the plains is no joke
Boerdir the particular wood that these vessels are made of repels the grass like wood repels water, so the boats float on top of the dense grass. anything that interrupts that could be of use. also, they cannot sail up a wall. like let's say a bare spot on the plain that they get tricked into sailing into. the ship is effectively grounded. most ships watch out for that with a keen eye though.
Elyngael during the float you see lots of wildlife, Rapkey, which look like a cross between a horse and velociraptor. You see a heard of Great Ranthom, the captain alters course around them, they can trap a ship. wild prarie pigs, which look like slugs. but are supposed to be good to eat. but water...not a drop. you actually see the Rapkey because they are following the ship because they can smell water.
Yurr'Neshi the captain shrugs. fire is not unheard of, but the baron's men, usually try to capture a ship intact, more slaves and loot that way. but if things look grim early enough, they might use fire.

DM Shane P Wednesday April 11th, 2018 10:24:10 PM Owen The Captain replies: Well all my boys can shoot a bow and use a spear, we have 3 ballistae we keep in general stores along with about 300 bolts. I've few scrolls, aye wind wall, couple of mass cable tourniquet (Mass Cure Moderate wounds), I also got a scroll of confusion and some grease spells, few fly spells, but I can't really use them all that well. they were left behind when our last mage left. It's hard to find a mage that wants to crew a ship.
[b]Mack: you easily teach your rats to chew through rope on command. you also teach them to avoid Kahn, but they were already pretty good at that already, come to think of it, they were already pretty good a chewing through rope, now they do it on command though.

I'd imagine that a fireball would put a quick end to the unlucky recipient ship and all.
‘Osul: captain: You can create potable water? we have about 2 tons of water left. if I drop it at first sign of trouble, I can probably get another 3 knots of speed out of her. if we can do that with near a herd of Ranthorm...lots of Ifs, but the Ranthorm will mob the water, and the rapkey will too, it would create a large barrier between us and the pursuers that would allow us to escape, if they are all directly behind us, if we can find a herd near where we are when the chase starts...too many ifs. and if you give the beast's water, they don't look for their own water anymore, and they die when you stop, they also follow you back to civilization and the locals don't take kindly to sailors bringing a herd of wild animals into camp. The Sargrass has it's one way of doing things, only the tough survive, but that's the way the Sarr wants it, who am I to interfere?
[b]Boerdir ?
Elyngael Captain: Aye, that's been done before, they great beasts clear a wide swath, but it's a chess game manoeuvring to trap a ship and with multiple ships, it would probably be me that got trapped. If your little halfling friend can convince all the rats to board the Baron's ships, I'll give him the okay do do it..

Armand: suggests that they keep a lookou...Oh! Mack's got it.
‘Osul: now eagle-eyed, performs the very definition of overwatch.
Boerdir Captain: well that's tricky. sure if we catch one we can take them out, but they are small ships and very fast, they also use some kind of sending scroll, I've heard tell from others that the craft sometimes never get out of site before the squad shows up.
Elyngael captain: Aye, but we need to be mindful of any advantage we can gain, I'll not drop the water if we can help it, but I won't put it off the table.
Yurr'Neshi Wood, fire, there's a weakness. the fact that you are a fast transport, vs, presumably warships. the crew seems competent, and have buckets of sand stationed around to fight fires, with the potential for violent action, they have material stationed to block incoming fire and to jettison when needed. any weakness you can see, the sailors have a ready mitigation in place to deal with it. problem being, no plan survives first contact with the enemy.
with plans in place, the ship sails on. Mack and Elyngael take turns at the crows nest, while 'Osul takes the Eagles eye view. they sailors change subtly, where it was linen shirts bandanas and clasp knives you begin to see chain cuirass, helmets and spears begin to show up. the Ballista is broken out and pintles mounted to hold them. barrels of bolts staged where they can be accessed quickly. bandages are laid out and the whole demeanour of the ship changes. the days drag on. the waiting is intolerable, yet the dread of what may come, intolerable as well. it's madding
three days pass before there is a shout from the crows nest and a simultaneous screech from flying 'Osul. glass is broken out and in the distance you see a small ship, making it's way away from you on the horizon, about 5 miles away.

Mack: small ship, more of a canoe with a sail, single occupant, moving away from you the level of detail at this range precludes further description.
Atlas: perhaps remembering the time with the bandits is excited, to say the least, to kill the bandit leader.
Armand: The captain says (and this is translated to player movement from captain movement) Our ship moves at about 60" The warships can move at about 65" Like i said, if we drop the water I can maybe get 2" or 3" more out of her...enough to draw the case out for a day or so. I've been heading obliquely towards our destination once the chase is on, I'll head there directly, hopefully, I can make this chase get us further onward instead of spending more time in the Barons lands.
‘Osul: with your superior vison, and superior vantage point you see much. Only one scout, there is a herd of Ranthom to Starboard and behind you, you don't know if that will be useful, but you see it. what you do not see is any sign of other ships anywhere within 15 miles of you.
Boerdir captain: Aye, we are large and proud, the scouts are small and timid, for us to see them before they see us would take a really stupid scout.Well...I'm hoping to draw the chase out, normally in such a case you run as fast as you can, hoping to get outside their territory before they catch you. The miners run a few galley a day or two out from the mine, if we can get under their protection the warship will break off, no sailing vessel wants to face a galley. thing is, we are still a week away from the border. we are going to have to fight. I'm hoping to keep them held out while you guys run interdiction on them. if you can set the ships on fire, or the sails we can get enough distance on them that they can't catch us.
Elyngael nope you are good.

everyone is on high alert! the day passes on, and into the night. The ship runs dark, and the lieutenants make sure that everyone is either barefoot or has rags muffling their boots, no smoking, and no talking above a whisper.
with the grey of the morning, there is a surprise. two warships passed you during the night and are running on either side of you about 400 yards and in front of you 1/2 of a mile. silently the captain turns to port, and you get 3/4 of a mile on the Starboard ship and bit less than that on the Port ship. you notice a 3rd ship behind the two, maybe two miles away. it looks like they were going to catch you in a pincer movement, but you slipped it.

Owen gathers the group together belowdecks, calling for the Fly, Wind Wall, and Cure scrolls. He speaks to everyone: "Alright, I can make seven of us invisible. Armand, you're good to stay here and use the Wind Walls and Mass Cure Moderate Wounds? I'll make us invisible first and then use scrolls to make us fly. Yurr'Neshi and I will fireball the starboard ship into oblivion; the rest of you take the port ship. Target any mages first. Sound like a plan?"
If there is general agreement he casts Invisibility on everyone but Armand, Yurr'Neshi, and himself; then Greater Invisibility on himself and Yurr'Neshi, and then uses the Fly scrolls on every member of the party. Everyone would have roughly 8 minutes of flight and invisibility. Remember that you get a bonus of +4 on your Fly checks from the spell. __________________

after the Ballistas are set up the ones on the fo'c'sle and fighting top, begin to lob bolts your way periodically. they fall well short, but the distance gets closer as the day moves on, you can hear the jeers and catcalls of the other ship, and see as well, mooning, rude gestures, other insults they lob your way whenever they think they have your attention.

"We are not going to be able to hit the two lead ships at the same time. The distance is not right."
"I'm pretty sure a Ballista bolt is not going to be traveling in the air over 1 minute. If we want to send a party over, flying and invisible to hit the first ship with I'd say wait till then. Owen I think you said Fly would last 4 minutes, that's 1 minute travel, 2 minutes fight, 1 minute back. Maybe we should save some of the fireball spells for the second ship when it comes closer."
"I can cast Bless right as the last Fly spell is cast then that group would have +1 to hit etc. or I can wait to cast Bless when the 2nd ship is closer and then everyone on board will have +1 for that fight."

As soon as I shoot my bow I will become visible, therefore, solving the problem of seeing each other. Anyone else who has ranged weapons could do the same - we will just pre-set our first target, and fly out at slightly different increments so that we are separated." Elyngael suggests. She also casts barkskin on herself.
Owen Marcellus (Weston W.) AC: 15/12/13; HP: 40/40; CMD: 17 Saturday April 21st, 2018 1:14:44 PM
Owen looks about at the collected group and smiles grimly, memories from battles in the Contested Kingdoms flashing before his mind's eye. "Alright, here's the plan: We'll split into two groups, air support and a boarding party. Yurr'Neshi and I will be the air support attacking the starboard ship, while everyone else (minus Armand) is in the boarding party attacking the port ship. Once those enemy ships have closed to just shy of the range of their ballistae their attention will be focused on the ships rather than on us. We'll stick together in the air by holding hands; Yurr'Neshi and I will hold hands, as will each member of the boarding party in a chain. Here's the signal to attack: Once the boarding party is 120 feet or so away from the enemy ship, Elyngael will let go of her neighbor in the boarding party chain. Since we can fly at about ten feet per second, that will give her about six seconds to ready her bow and arrows. When she fires a full sortie, she will become visible. That's the cue for the rest of the boarding party to swoop in and attack, while the air support bombard the other enemy ship."
During the wait, Owen tries to assuage Armand's concerns. "We can shoot fireballs over 700 feet, so the air support can definitely hit at the same time as the boarding party. Plus, if the boarding party can manage to take over their ship, they won't need to fly back."
He casts the Invisibility spells and Fly scrolls just as the first ballista bolts start to splash near the ship. "Make sure your team is holding hands before I make you invisible! Remember to target their mages first!", he calls to the Wardens. In the hurrying buildup to combat, he is unsure whether Mack is invisible or slipped away while he was distracted. He figures that the little rascal will want to be causing havoc on enemy ships rather than the friendly one, though. Then he takes Yurr'Neshi's hand and flies up toward the starboard ship.

OOC: with the distances involved, it would take 20 or so rounds if he turned or just slowed.
eOsul: ?
Boerdir indeed there are men in the rigging. 2 men at the fighting top with a ballista, 2 men in the crows nest with a glass. 3 men total trimming sails and running line. 60' above the deck of the ship. about 50' seperates the crows nest and the fighting top.
Elyngael starts up the ambush with and arrow to the throat! (the 2nd arrow bounced off his armor.) he gives a strangled yell and the fight is on.
Yurr'Neshi prepares his fireball. the ship is about 120 ft long, there are men scattered all over some on the quarterdeck, some on the deck some to fore and aft, some are in the rigging, and you are sure that there are some below decks. where do you target your spell?
flying invisible is great for stealth, no foot falls mean no noise. the party sets up and Elyngael kicks things off with an arrow to the Helmsman. it's the first tick of combat, the sailors have not had a chance to react yet, but at the end of the next round the hornets nest will have been kicked.

Osul see the arrows take flight, as well as the Fireball. He quickly moves into position to attack the Captain if possible. If not, the target that seems the most imminent to pose a threat.
OOC: I'm going to have a hard time posting a decent post for Osul on Thursday, but at least I got Wednesdays in on time. ;) If anyone else wants to post for Osul Thursday, please have at it. If not, I'll see what I can do tomorrow night again.
Mack: Oh the fireball explodes well above your head.
Atlas: sets up for a sweet coup de grace, but at the last moment and with an uncanny sense of self preservation the captain avoids the blow and draws his rapier, seems to be sheathed in ice.
Armand: double move is 60' every 6 sec or 10/s. 22 round to get there if all are stationary. since the enemy boat is moving forward we will knock that down to 13 rounds.
eOsul: do you flank the captian against Atlas?
Boerdir the rope parts with a snap as the heavy weight of sail is not longer supported, the collapse knockes one of the men trimming the sail off the yard arm where he hits the deck with a sickening crunch.
Elyngael your next arrows put the helmsman down. the wheel spins freely and the bow of the boat beging to move.
Yurr'Neshi the fireball explodes by the mast and engulfs the men in the crows nest 1 of the riggers and 2 men right below the mast. Catching the sail on fire and portions of the yardarms. the men in the crows nest, fall as well as the rigger, the ones on the ground kick and scream before quiteing down and lying still.
the shock and awe of your attack is over and the crew begins to respond. The captain whirls upon the now visable Atlas and with lightening like moves tags him 3 times with his rapier. the cold of the blade burns and it seems his blade found the soft spots in your armor at least once. Atlas takes 15, 17, and 17 points of damage.
Crossbows appear from all over the place and bolts begin to fly. I have Elyngael, Neshi, Beordir and Atlas as being visible now. still invisible are Mack and 'Osul. I am assigning the numeral 1 to Elyngael, 2 to Neshi, 3 to Beordir and 4 to Atlas. I shall now roll 25 times to determine shot allocation.
Elyngael AC. 20 rolls against : (23 Crit! not confirmed, 11, 12) 9 points of damage. 'Neshi AC 26 rolls against : (8,17,8,11,6,9,21,15) no hits. Beordir. AC 23 rolls against: (16,22,18,12,5,17) no hits. Atlas. AC 24 rolls against. (4,17,9,17,4,19,6,6) no hits.
the XO comes up from below and moves to flank Atlas.

I'm going to retrograde Mack's post for 'Osul because he has never really shown a tendency to fight in person.
'Osul is flying stage right of the ship.
Last round 'Osul would have cast Flaming Sphere at the top sail of the front mast (basically on the yardarm of the front top mast) yardarm, ropes and possible the sail take 8 points damage, reflex save for half, oh wait inanimate objects don't get that.
This round, the ball keeps burning there, unless the yardarm fell then the ball would also fall 30 feet or to the next yardarm. 10 points damage this round.

The Warden's immediate appearance is highly noticeable. We certainly are drawing fire from the many handy crossbows on deck.
Beordir flies off and down to the lee of the pirate vessel, hoping to use that ship to shield the crew of his own vessel. After a moment, Beordir pulls out a small crystal rod from his spell component pouch.
Spinning his fingers while speaking staccotto arcane phrases, a small gleaming blue sigil glows in the air. The crystal rod amplifies the sigil and modifies the shapes into a glowing pattern hovering just above the grass well in the view of any crossbowmen tracking his flight.

Yurr'Neshiyour fireball goes into the open hatch, when it detonates fire shoots from the hold, the any other hole connecting to the hold. 3 sailors standing near the hold become living flames from the fire. Screaming they run to the edge of the ship and jump off. the ship is now on fire, apparently there were flamable items in the hold that you set alight.
the sailors are all busy reloading their heavy crossbows so they get no attack this round. The XO and the ensigns do though. 1 for elyngael 2 for 'neshi 3 for Beordir 4 for Atlas 5 for Mack 6 for 'Osul.
The ensigns seem to be headhunting spell casters. 2 javelines fly toward 'Osul and 1 flies towards 'Neshi. 'Osul gets hit by 1 javelin for 8 points of damage.
The XO is intercepted by the Dire wolf that 'Osul summoned. and the two clash. the dire wolf bites down on the XO's leg and tries to trip him, but the XO bases out and attempts to slash the wolf with his halbard, he misses though.
the Pirate captain splits his attacks between Mack and Atlas. He stabs at Atlas twice, hitting him once for 17 points of damage. Owen continues his onslaught on the second ship. He maintains his Invisibility Field, then casts another Silent Fireball at the ship's captain. In another burst of heroic effort, he casts a Major Image on the enemy ship: A loud booming Crack! resounds across the enemy deck as a blue fireball detonates amidst the sails of the ship. Instead of dissipating like a fireball, however, the magical bluish flames cling to surfaces they touch, pooling like burning oil. Mast, sail, deck; all blacken and char as the flames crackle and a powerful, oppressive heat radiates from the blaze. The acrid scent of burning wood and tar spreads across the deck. The flames burgeon, expanding towards the full range of the spell over the next seven rounds. (120 cubic feet)
The spells cast, he flies a little further up and to the left.
Swift Action: Maintain Invisibility Field. Standard Action: Silent Fireball, DC 18 Reflex or take 22 fire damage. Heroic Standard Action: Major Image, DC 18 Will save or believe a terrifying magical fire is consuming your ship. Move Action: Fly up and to the left.

Elyngael no. the life boards travel at a good clip, at least as fast as the ship,
Yurr'Neshi you lug a fireball at the ship, which is already burning quite nicely.
The 3rd ship heaves to about a mile out. and all the sailors head towards that boat. your boat comes up along side the 1st ship and offloads a prize crew, the second ship burns to a cinder. it looks as though the 3rd ship is just hanging around till it can pick up the shipwrecked sailors. if you wish to confront that ship the captain is willing to hang around, but he also tells you that a single ship is no threat and that he would like to be on his way.

GIven the chance, 'Osul won't let the second ship burn to the grassline. He will happily spend a Hero Point to recall and recast Quench. A grass fire would mean something different here. That is not the point they are trying to make, as he understands it.

DM Shane P Thursday May 3rd, 2018 10:11:48 PM Owen identifies the items. (see below) Mack: the name of the ship is the "John Eaton Carter" (Also you guys rolled really well and made smart decisions. this could have very easily gotten a lot of people killed. )
Atlas: suggests that they heal the captain enough that he can stand for his execution. He also thinks we ought to go after the 3rd ship.
Armand: heal everyone for 18hp.
‘Osul: saves the 2nd ship before it is a total loss. the captain puts a prize crew on it but since all the sails and rigging is gone he is going to be forced to tow both the ships in until they can rerig it.
Boerdir the first mate shrugs Mages don't work on cargo ships much. the work, the long time between ports and the pay just makes it an unattractive proposition. in a squadron of 3 ships, the Baron usually has at least 1 mage, I guess we just got lucky with this one.
Elyngael get some healing.
Yurr'Neshi sees the work of his fireball undone by 'Osul's quenching spell.
With the two ships in tow the John Eaton Carter makes even slower time for a day or so. until they get some of the damage repaired and get new rigging put up. then you sail abreast. No other ships accost during the remaning 8 days you sail. that is until you are challenged by the Gallies of the Mining colony. another day in and you are docked and unloading cargo the bounty for the 2 ships comes out to 40,000gp...20k of which is yours.

This is an older mind, well dug and stil working but a long while ago one of the miners found a vein of iron that ran straight through to the other side of the mountain. We use it to get supplies to the Monks in the Forest, but we don't tell them that, as luck would have it the entrance comes on a bit up the pass, we keep it hidden, but we make out like it took days to pass through the mountains.
with that, he takes you to the baggage train that is headed to the Forest of Faith. he and 3 other men have it all staged to perfection. the mules are slightly poor as if they have been in a place with little forage, the men's clothes are dirty and sweatstained. it looks all the world like they just crossed though a difficult mountain pass.
Now don't tell nobody, we ain't lost a man since this tunnel opened up, and we've kept our profit margin. If the Monks find out, our children will starve and we'll have to collapes the tunnel and use the old way. Our wives have gotten used to a certain lifestyle, and...well so have we.
the journey through the tunnel is but a few hours. it's a relly long tunnel. but the way is lit, clean and well shorn. the mules seem used to it and there is even a guard or two to make sure that no nasties take up residence. it comes out in a hidden bluff just off the pass trail. apparently you either rose a bit in elevation or the land on this side is a bit lower than the other side. you have to go down the mountain, following the trail, several hundred yards before you reach flat land. the veiw is magnificent though, especially after weeks of nothing but grass, the forest of faith is spectacular spread out below you.
by the end of the day, the baggage train has reached the monk enclave, The Drover (who's name is Bill) introduces you to the leader of the enclave, a man by the name of Warren.

I try not to listen to the Drover speak, so I don't feel as guilty. I've learned that the world isn't as black and white as I once thought though. There are a lot of "gray" areas.
To Atlas, when I get the chance... "I'm all for a side quest. Just say when!" :D
Atlas Sunowl (Trey) AC: 24 (T 14 FF 20) , CMD: 26/21, HP 33/86 Monday May 7th, 2018 2:15:26 PM
Atlas clearly likes that idea of the boots the more he thinks about it. "I don't think I can do the full plate, I need to up in a hurry if we're ambushed at night, but being able to engage the enemy faster will help everyone out. Count me in if no one else wants them."
As for the Baron, "Mack, it looks like the others think our priority is saving the Wold, which is hard to argue. I don't like leaving him out there, but with an army of 1000 and a city of 10,000, well, maybe we'll save the Wold first and return after to deal with him." He smiles that smile that Mack has learned to know as the trouble maker.
Atlas is a bit put off by the dishonesty of the merchants. "What do the rest of you think? The monks will ask us how our trip through the mountains was, so we should be on the same page."

As much as I would like to rid the area of someone like the baron, I believe that the current quest we are on for Maab should take priority and I think we might need perhaps a few more of us to bring down those types of numbers.
Armand (Robert D) AC 22/touch11/flat 21 HP 63/63 CMD 18 Character Sheet Monday May 7th, 2018 3:43:57 PM "Atlas, what's to say you don't have 2 sets of armor? One for resting at night and one for day, when we're more likely to get into the think of things? You'll just need to get a bag of holding to keep things in."
Armand contemplates things. "The way I see it, the monks..err druids..whatever, are paying for a delivery service. How it's delivered is not a factor. In other words if I contract with someone to deliver food every week, as long as the price is already agreed upon, how it's done is not a concern, as long as the delivery is on time."
Armand turns to 'Osul. "If I remember right we're supposed to get an acorn from the oldest druid grove here. Do you think if we offer to trade the seed of the Tree we can move things along without having to go on some quest for these druids?"

Warren: the red grass, it has not touched us here as yet. but we are aware of it. curious, the Manfri and our sect have often disagreed with the fate of the Sargrass, but on this we see eye to eye. the Red Grass is a blight.. he thinks for a minute. then motions for you all to follow him.
He takes you to a hut with a few acolytes in attendance. inside the hut a frail old man sets naked but for a loincloth upon the floor. in his eyes there is madness, and it looks as though the acolytes are there to both keep from harm both self-inflicted and other things.
Warren: This is Lum, often called Lum the Mad, for he is quite insane, but in his madness, he has been known to speak prophesy. he turns and speaks to the madman. grandfather! what were you saying about the ones seeking the sargrass? they are here, I think, tell them!
he turns to you all and you can tell that he is not here. but suddenly his eyes clear, his composure changes and he speaks in a surprisingly calm and reasonable voice.
Ah, the Tree Wardens! it is good to finally meet you all. you guys are the talk of the town in the nether realms. Your future is so interesting as well, why that battle you are going to have with that D...sorry...I get carried away, I can't let the cat out of the bag too soon now can I? Ha HA! You are seeking something, the first seed, yes? It is guarded by a Sphinx you know. the Sphinx is the only being capable of opening the time bubble where the seed is kept. and the Sphinx has a riddle, it's not a spoken riddle. but something else, he gave me the something, to give to you, when you finally made it here.
from out nowhere, he pulls forth a beautiful Red Mahogany staff with brass caps on the ends. the ends are also cleft a bit the staff is about 1 1/2" in diameter. he also pulls forth from out of nowhere (seriously, the guys got a loincloth on, where the heck does he keep a 6' staff and a strip of leather) a strip of finely tanned leather. there are letters stitched at short intervals down its length. The letters are as follows. "rlgoiwayuuitlfeeyaeiinshtoptnoievrdy" he looks at the staff and the strip and shrugs. I don't know what it means, then again I've not tried to work out the problem. that's you guys job. . his eyes dilate and his head cocks to the side, a line of drool escapes his mouth and you know that he has checked out from this world once again.

The group currently decides against dealing with the Baron. Beordir's generally uncertain as to the value of attacking the Baron. He is supporting 10,000 people with his actions. What will that group do? Thankfully, the Wardens do not chose to intervene at the moment.
The new forest is interesting, as is the mine, but the druid grove is most intriguing. It reminds him of his lost dreams and hermitage. He is momentarily relieved when the group enters the hut. When he catches sight of the aged man called Lum, he sighs and mutters, "Why do we always seem to find the lunatics? Do they follow us around?"
A Sphinx sounds interesting, but they are tricky in the stories he has heard. Owen starts looking at the letters on the leather strip. Beordir very carefully inscribes them in his wax tablet. Settling down near the side of the tent, he starts trying to work out a pattern from the letters.

the Staff is a +2 staff, when the leather is wrapped around it one way, it provides a shield of +2, when it is wrapped around it another way it gives a boost of +2 to your concentration check. it takes 2 rounds to wind the leather around the staff, and the effect lasts for 10 rounds. it can only be used 1 per day for each effect. wrapping the staff nullifies it's use as a staff while being used in that way.
The Rangers name is Larry, you know this because he likes to talk...a lot. he leads you into the forest for most of the day and you reach the cave of the sphynx well after dark. You learn that the Sphynx's name is Cheops. torches burn in sconces and on poles leading up to the cave.
as you approach the cave mouth a deep masculine voice echos forth. Well, well if it isn't the Tree Wardens, welcome. Lum told me you were here, I was hoping my little puzzle would be more of a challenge, but I see your reputation for competence is well deserved. there is movement inside the cave, the Sphynx steps out into the torch light. He is massive, 12 or 13 ft at the shoulder, tawny gold color with a handsome nubian face surrounded by a golden Pharos rainment. I am Cheops, but I'm sure that this noisey human that lead you here told you that... he pauses and looks at the Ranger How are you this night Larry? ...they excange pleasantries for a few moments...apparently Larry is about to be a father...he didn't talk about that with you. their conversation ends shortly and Larry walks off to let you have the Sphynx to yourself. You are here for the First Seed, the last seed from the oldest Tree in this forest. I'm glad I saved it, the tree was struck by lightening may years ago and now no longer exists. I knew it was special because it glowed when I picked it up. He turns a paw over and uncups it, inside is a glowing Acorn, a blue halo around it that lights up the area like the sun. He holds it out to the party then cups his paw and puts it away. I have guarded the seed for millenia, ever since the Sargrass first came to this place, I have a price for the Seed, You must sit with me for the night, and tell me of your travels, your stories and your place. and when you take this seed and save the Wold you must come back, once the Sargrass has come back, and tell me of your stories since. is this price acceptable?

Atlas, knowing he should let the more wise among them speak, cannot help himself and jumps right in. "It just so happens that I enjoy telling our stories, so I am more than happy to make this deal and talk through the night. Also, I was afraid that we would never have the chance to come back to this place, so I'm excited to hear that we can return at some point to share even more stories with you."
Atlas does everything in his power to wait for the others to say what they are thinking, but the moment he feels like he can jump in without being rude he does so. "Our stories vary before meeting, so I think it best to start with the first time any of us met. That was a day long ago when Mack and I joined a caravan as guards as they made their trip to the Tree of Parting...Part way through that trip one of the wagons had a problem with a wheel and had to pull over to get fixed. The rest of the caravan continued on and we were assigned to guard this one wagon. There were others with us as well, brave and kind, but their path eventually lead in other directions as you'll hear. Anyway, it just so happens that the wagon received some unwelcome visitors that night in the form of goblins...We managed to live, get the wagon back on the road, and eventually make it to the Tree. That was what first got us noticed." As Atlas speaks he picks pieces of the story to dive deeper into, trying to make it as entertaining to the Sphinx as he can. He pauses periodically to answer questions and for dramatic effect. He's in his element and one might wonder if he ever thought about taking the role of a bard. However, they quickly shake their head and laugh at the notion.

As you know well, this forest is in one of Maab's Valleys of Twilight, so here the sun never sets. To stay the night with you would be to stay forever. In addition, your clever puzzle suggests the problem with the other half of your deal: just as 'Religion is what you put into your life every day', so are our stories everything in our lives, great and small. To return and tell you of our stories since saving the Wold would also have no end, because we would have to recount forever the tale of returning to you and telling you further stories about further stories. I propose this counter-offer: we each tell you a brief story in exchange for the First Seed. Atlas and 'Osul have already fulfilled their part of this bargain. Further, I am sure you want still more information about the Wold at large. We will tell you a second round of stories if you teach us Sphinx, your language."
If the sphinx agrees, Owen will tell a story about his first adventure with the Wardens: running down a band of orcish kidnappers. Mack, Atlas, and 'Osul appear in it, as well as some former companions: Carver, Cameron, and Crosseye.
Then he will tell what he has heard of the sundering of the Mailed Fist mercenary organization.

there is a day and night, but strangely the sun rises in the west and sets in the west, altering course and heading back the way it came shortly before setting. which makes for a very long day and a very long night.
The Sphynx listens intently, asking well thought out and intelligent questions that, somehow, get you to talk a lot more than you thought you would. the night is long and during the course of the stories a table is set up and a spread laid out...along with spirits and beer. what started as individuals telling tales, turns into a mass recounting of events as good food and good drink loosens tounges and creates a spirit of bonhomie. when the sun rises in the west yet again, Cheops hands over the seed. he looks at Owen. Beordir is not much of a story teller, but he does have notes. He follows along with the storytelling, documenting new understanding for the Sage's Guild. Having been worried about the difficulty of getting anything out of a Sphinx, he's quite surprised that this one is so...accommodating. Most people are ready to go, but Mack actually voices the uncertainty for what's next.
Beordir speaks up, "I think Owen has a book defining a ritual. I'm not certain we are in the right location for it's use however. It's supposed to stop the Bloodgrass. Also Elyngael has a flute of "Fated Teleportation", mostly to keep it away from Mack. It's supposed to be blown once we complete the ritual."

Atlas takes it all in. Closing his eyes he breathes deeply, smelling the plants and food. He focuses on the air around him, feeling his skin prickle as he notices the temperature for the first time. Then he shifts to the sounds around him, there are the songs of different birds, the wind through the leaves, and the conversation of his friends in the background.
He's usually in a hurry, but not at this moment. He wants to remember this night forever. The experiences he has had over his lifetime are all unique, but this is certainly one of his favorites.
After taking his moment, he returns to the present. "I cannot remember all the puzzles they've given us, but it seems to me that we were sent here to retrieve something, not to plant something. Then again, we have two items, the seed and the sapling. Maybe we are supposed to plant one here and the other back home and they can become sister trees across the...what? Where are we anyway? Is this a different planet or plane, or just another place within the Wold?" And once again Atlas is back to being antsy and ready to move forward.
Armand (Robert D) AC 22/touch11/flat 21 HP 63/63 CMD 18 Character Sheet Friday May 11th, 2018 4:39:55 PM "Right then." Armand claps his hands together.
"Owen I believe you have that ritual book the little guy gave us. Want to look it over real quick?"
"Elyngael you have the flute, let's play it and get back to the Wold. No telling how far that red weed has spread while we've been gone."
Armand is ready to shake the dust of this place off.

'Osul undertakes his meditations with the western rising sun, with a particular focus on the new seed, and if this is the best place to be planting the seed from The Tree.

Since no one stepped up Elyngael toots the flute, there is a feeling of falling through yourself, the world twists and you find yourself standing before the crystal you first found when this whole thing started. The red grass has spread far. The trees themselves now sport red leaves, the bodies of the creatures you killed are now coved in red grass. The grass stretches from horizon to horizon, a sea of red, moving in an unnatural rhythm that no wind cold ever produce. It’s strangely beautiful, and unnerving, the birds don’t sing, no insect stirs, there is only the grass which covers all, and the sinister Sussruss of grass moving.
The ritual states that at least one person needs to sing the words to the ritual, the item of legend must be pressed against the crystal to drive out the worlds blood, the incense must fill the air around the crystal to purify and sanctify the undertaking. The blood grass has a will though, and will seek to thwart your efforts.
The party must place their found object upon/against the crystal - or at least have it touch the crystal in some way. The performance aspect can now commence. At least 1 PC must make a Performance check for each round of the ritual Skill Check / Ability checks that others may contribute can include: STR: A raw Str check to try and keep the grass away from the crystal DEX: A raw Dex check to wave a stick of incense close to the grass without touching it CON: A raw Con check to hold a pulsating piece of pure crystal INT: Int checks to see how to unknot the grass that is tangled up and binding the crystal. CHA: A Performance check. All sorts of performances (except Comedy) can contribute to performing the ritual. WIS: Will power and concentration to battle the grass mentally.
These are merely examples of things that will work, other more creative uses of your stats and skills are possible.
*Note: These are all untrained skills meaning anyone can attempt them and the result will be at least the same as their relevant ability bonus. At least 1 PC must make a Performance check. If the PC use a Manfri-made steelgrass instrument, treat it as masterwork (+2 bonus) and add an extra +1 circumstance bonus. Some may choose not to contribute to the ritual, but this will simply prolong the performance.
Each round you will take 3 points of negative energy damage while performing the ritual, on top of that you will take 1point/round of bleed damage (stacking) as the grass slashes at you to keep you away.

Atlas looks about at the group as they prepare to begin the ritual. "I guess I'm the one trying to keep the grass away from the crystal?" As they begin the ritual he fights the grass, but he wasn't prepared for what the grass would do and struggles mightily.

I move a little closer to the flute.
I don't consider singing my strong suit with "performance", but if singing is necessary, I give it a shot (if not, I use my banjo):
(d20+9 perform banjo check of 26)
or if the group needs someone with good Dex to wave the incense, I can attempt that as well:
(d20+4 dexterity check of 22)
Squeaver tries to aid anyone that's going to hold the pulsating piece of pure crystal: (d20+1 aid Con check of 7 against DC 10 --> +0 to anyone (failed))

Perform DC 24
The red grass withered and died, And crumbled to the ground. And blew away in the wind, With not even a sound. Its seed that was spreading, Throughout the Wold. Burned too, until it was ashes cold And though others have died, From the red grasses wrath Domi created rebirth. And life follow his path, Just as before, Under Domi’s blue skies, Forever more without the red grass.

Armand casts Air Walk and takes the seed. He walks above the grass and places the seed on top of the crystal.
Con Check: 4 (d20+2)
Though really I don't see how con affects holding he crystal on the thing, but I guess I will burn a hero point for a reroll.
Con check: 15 (d20+2)
Feeling the slightly weaker as he approached Armand activates: Ward against death (8th) 30ft aura protect against death for (rounds=lv) immune to death effects, energy drain, negative level drain.

Having seen the ritual, Owen wracks his brain to think about its function. Could it be safely and effectively sung in another language, a more compact language, and thus be completed faster? Knowledge (Arcana): 39. (Natural 20!)
If yes, Owen knows 11 languages, and he translates and tells the others the words to sing in a kind of call-and-response. Linguistics: 31.
If not, he utterly fails to outsmart the grass. Int check: 5. Natural 1.
