The Ascent
Meeting with Gargul

Gargul, Lord of Life and Death (CDM Cayzle)
Thursday July 12th, 2018 6:24:04 PM

How will Gargul reach you in your Mansion sanctuary? Or even outside it? Please.

As it turns out, the god does not come to you. You are not surprised to realize that you are going to him. Greatest living heroes of the current Wold? Again, please.

The sound of a thousand waves crashing, the sight of a thousand whirling stars, the feeling of your body being squeezed through cheesecloth, and you find yourself in the realm of Gargul. A vaulting, infinite hall with floor and ceiling of roiling gray clouds. The physical presence of Gargul is intimidating, though he just appears as a man in black robes, seated on a gray granite throne. He is frowning, with his chin resting on his fist.

Does his stern lip quirk as he sees the mug of ale in Beri's hand? I mean, the one in Gargul's hand. He takes a sip. "Yes, that is a nice gesture, follower of the fey queen."

Then his face grows stern again as he looks at you. "We need to talk." His voice is a thunderous basso profundo.

Sense Motive DC 0 Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the feeling he is not in a good mood. Despite the ale.}

Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice that Gimp has made himself scarce.}

What's the right approach here? Some of you are direct followers. Others *cough*bloodwitch*cough* maybe less so. Subservience? Humor? Fellowship? Polite distance? Is it time to offer greetings?

Beri notices that Gargul isn't happy. He looks around to see if Gimp's expression can provide any clues, but can't seem to find him... that may not be a good sign.

Under the circumstances, the druid decided it's probably best to let some of Gargul's followers speak first.

With Bosk, one of Garguls most devout followers, in the room. Sesha decides to keep quiet for now. She's heard Bosks line about his shadow being nailed to Garguls wall many times, and she was curious how much good will that was worth.

She steels her resolve a little, Serenbeth help her, she hadn't done anything worse than usual to put the chief god off that she could recall. In fact, they had killed quite a few liches lately. Maybe that was worth something.

Instead, she kneels. He was a god, and even if she was technically working every loophole around as many of his rules as seemed possible, she knew he deserved respect.

Bosk looks at Gargul, but is unsure what to make of his mood. Is he exhausted from from dealing with a higher number of dead than usual, processing some sort of bad news terrible enough to shake the gods, or could he be mad at the Iron Dragons for some reason.

The Horned Cleric takes a step forward and places a fist over his breast as he bows before the god of Life and Death. It is a sign of the utmost respect, he equivalent of kneeling for a minotaur as cloven hooves prevent them from genuflecting as other bipedal creatures do.

Lord Gargul, we have dealt with the Bloodgrass threat to the best of our abilities. From what we can tell the Sar threat has been neutralized and his followers scattered and crippled.

From what Gimp informed us, the Sargrass is back in the Wold. If it is not asking too much, could you give us a message for the mother of the child we interceded for, Gimp told us "if the Sargrass was brought back into the Wold, then you would have a role for this little one. A destiny and a purpose." I can only imagine the mother's loneliness and am sure your words will help ease her mind.

Also, is there anything that must yet be done to prevent such devastation from returning and the cult from reforming?

Zane hears the questions about the Sargrass and the recent battle, he approaches and bows his head in respect to Lord Gargul.
"Bosk, I expect that Lord Gargul has more on his mind that the Sar and what just happened. I expect he wants us to finish up with the Death Dragon Cult. I'd like to finish up with them as well."
With that said, Zane bows as shown in the Monastery he was raised to Gargul and steps back in respect.

Tink maintains a kind of reverent silence. She stands as a soldier might when told "at ease". Her feet evenly spaced apart, her hands clutched behind her back and facing ahead..

She has faith that Gargul - like Pantheon - will fairly judge both the deeds of the party and of herself. She doesn't believe she has done anything to cause offence to him, but who knows how the mind of a god works?

Not being asked a direct question Tink remains silent and still.

Sense Motive DC.. Highlight to display spoiler: {Please. There is no DC Gargul couldn't hit :) Tink feels quite proud of the achievements of the party to date though is trying her best not to appear directly so.}

Restlin has spent enough time around Gargul to be comfortable in his presence, but he has a serious abundance of respect for the god of life and death. He shows this by keeping his mouth shut and letting his followers address him. He looks around for someplace comfortable to have a seat.

If no such place exists, he goes to stand next to Garret, making sure he doesn't cause any problems.

As they are pulled through space, Garret lets out a "Whoool...poooooo" sound as they arrive in the throne room. Completely not prepared for the travel or the squeezing, he falls and lands flat on his face. Without getting up at first, he rolls his head left and right, trying to identify where they are. He pushes himself up to a seated position and opens his mouth to say something, but stops when Restlin places a hand on his shoulder.

It sounds like the Wold may not be safe just yet.
Our breather may need to wait a little bit longer.

The druid takes a sip of his ale and prepares for whatever bad news may await.

Gargul, Lord of Life and Death (CDM Cayzle)
Saturday July 14th, 2018 1:37:32 AM

Some arrive with a bump and a nod. Others are more respectful. Did the Iron Dragons do something to offend the god?

Seriously, it takes no ranks in Know Religion to know that if you had dome something, you would know it. No, this is a more serious matter than the vagaries of mortals. You Iron Dragons are tools, at least this time.

He explains so that you will know what he needs. He waves his hand and the clouds under your feet shift and reform into chairs. "Be seated. This will take some time. The crystal you destroyed was an artifact of immense power. It's sole purpose was to hide from my perception the activities of the Death Dragon Cult. Even their very existence was hidden from me. The veil is lifted from my eyes, and I see the truth."

Gargul stands and paces in front of his throne as he speaks. "As you suspected, I am not the source of the divine power of the Death Dragon Cult priests. There is another Power who is deceiving them, masquerading as me. He is granting them spellcasting powers. He is the founder of their order. He assisted them in constructing the artifact. He impersonated me so cunningly that even dedicated priests with years of service were deceived. He was able to impersonate me because he knows me like no other. Because he is my creation. My son."

He stops and turns. "It is Kevintar."

He pauses to let that sink in.

Gargul resumes his pacing. "After my ascension into divinity, I was tasked by Alemi with being a judge to the Noble Races. I accepted my task. It suited my character. However, in the early days of my godhood, I was still possessed of the passions of mortality. I still had the thoughts, convictions, and drive that I had when I was a conquering warlord. I lacked the patience of experience. In those days I was not content to work through mortal agents as the other gods. When a threat to the Noble Races was found, I wanted it dealt with immediately. I created the twin punishers of the gods -- Marteaus and Kevintar. Marteaus was headstrong and brash. Kevintar was a stolid follower who never questioned. When the gods talked about evil and how to begin influencing the Noble Races to confront such evils, I would act impulsively and send out my punishers. I imbued them with evil to face evil. And it worked. They accomplished missions throughout the Second Age with beautiful efficiency."

He narrows his eyes as he continues. "But then Domi learned what I was doing. He confronted me in front of the other gods. Demanding me to repent! I refused to repent for being effective. To assuage their sensibilities I agreed to end the use of my punishers and seal them away in a prison. A tower was created. The Bone Tower. It is centered in the Shadowlands and is in fact the physical centerpiece of that plane of existence. It also has a presence in the material Wold and the Estates of Unrest. It is necessary to have it exist simultaneously in all three states to prevent intrusions or escape. I created a pair of seals -- the most powerful seals in existence -- to guard their prison. Over the four ages of the Wold, a handful of vagabonds have wormed their way into the tower, looking for treasure, but they never reached anything important. I closed the tower after each breach. That was merely an inconvenience."

He shakes his head slightly and continues pacing. "Before the Year of Ascension, the Sons of Dread tested their soul-draining artifact. They could not control the flow of energy, and it fed an enormous amount of power to Bone Tower. It woke Marteaus. He broke his seal, escaped, and began the Year of Ascension. Marteaus, free and without restraint, was uncontrollable and obsessed with testing the Noble Races to prove them worthy or unworthy. He believed they were flawed and would never achieve their potential without repeated tests, both individuals and nations. He saw his earlier work as acts of righteousness. This was even more true now that he would allow his test subjects to conquer the tests -- becoming strong and able to meet life's threats without continuing to fail. This work, however justified he may feel, is evil. Evil that is in need of judgment."

He stops pacing and turns to face you. "Kevintar, on the other hand, has had to work very long, very hard, and very patiently to break his seal. It would not even be possible had the breaking of Marteaus' seal not weakened his own. Over four ages of the Wold, he has forced a crack. A thin seam through which his influence can spread. He touched the minds of men, posing as myself, and founded the Death Dragon Cult. Their purpose, unknown to them, is to break his seal. Soul energy can empower him just like Marteaus, but he is siphoning the energy from worship rather than death."

Gargul sits on his throne and scrutinizes you for a moment. "The Death Dragon Cult will continue to spread heresy and feed energy to Kevintar. Destroying them will prove difficult. As long as Kevintar can touch their minds, they will persist. Their names and faces may change, but they will continue their work." He leans forward and his voice becomes grave. "If Kevintar escapes, another Year of Ascension will occur. Blood and ashes will cover the lands. He must be stopped before he reaches his full power. I need you, the Wold needs you, to break Kevintar's seal and release him."

Kevintar! Gargul is sending the party after Kevintar! Tink had no idea that the Death Dragon Cult had become so dangerous. She can understand now the threat that is posed to the Wold.

She is able to follow most of the story and piece together the parts that were unclear. However it is the request that surprises her the most.

"Beg pardon, my lord, but did you just say you wanted us to release Kevintar?"

If Gargul deemed it so then Tink would no doubt follow of course. She will not doubt the will or wisdom of a god.

Beri is hesitant to ask his question, but decides it does need to be asked.
If Kenintar was able to deceive even the most dedicated and knowledge followers, how do we know this is real and not another deception to trick us into releasing the seal for him?

Bosk nods as Gargul informs the group of the task at hand. Lord Gargul, I understand you wants this cult rooted out, and of course we are willing to help. To help ensure we succeed, could you tell us more about this undertaking? What is involved with releasing Kevintar? Will the are be protected by undead? Are we likely to face the cult, Liches, Vampirres, and what the like. Most importantly, what do we do once we free Kevintar? Do you mean for us to seal him away again or to defeat him? Either way, does he have any s-specific strengths or weaknesses we should make note of?

Since Bosk is talking, Zane just stays quiet.

Restlin's on board with all of this, right up until the end. "Yea, what Tink said. You want us to release him before he escapes on his own? I'm sure there's a great reason for that, Lord Gargul, but we'd sure like to know what that is."

Gargul, Lord of Life and Death (CDM Cayzle)
Monday July 16th, 2018 1:15:04 PM

Gargul sighs. "First let me answer the broader question, Bosk. We will get to specifics, be assured."

"There are three possible outcomes to this situation. First, the seal remains unbroken but leaky, and Kevintar continues to contaminate the Wold. Second, his followers learn how to break the seal and do so. They surely will if they can. Or third, you break the seal and Kevintar will be met and destroyed as he steps forth."

"I would be willing to accept the leak, but I think the cult will figure out the release sooner or later."

"I cannot break the seal. When I created the prison, I intended for it to be unbreakable. By anyone! Even myself. The only seal that is truly unbreakable is one that even its creator cannot break. It left no room for doubt or regret."

He steeples his fingers. "You see, everything that is made can be unmade. A creator can ensure that his creation is protected by choosing the means of its destruction. I chose the most impossible method I could imagine. That is why I call it 'unbreakable.' I set the seal such that breaking it is anathema to my own nature. The Seal of Kevintar can only be broken ... by an intelligent, free-willed undead that is also a construct."

He looks at you to make sure you understand why the seal must be broken, and why you can succeed in that goal.

Gimp pipes up from behind the throne. "The master doesn't want to get his hands dirty dealing with filthy undead constructs, so you nut-jobs get the honor of doing the stuff he prefers not to."

Gargul scowls and laughs at the same time. He speaks softly, reflectively. "Ah my fool! Speaking truth to power again, I see. But in fact, there are things even gods cannot do. I do not choose to do this, and I also set it up so that I cannot. It has to be you, Dragon Heroes."

Wyaar purses his lips in thought as he listens to this all, "Is it not possible to enter his prison without breaking the seal to defeat him? You had mentioned others had made it into the Tower. it would seem the safest bet if it's possible. If we failed to destroy him he would still be at least somewhat contained."

Sesha ponders her knowledge of the Ascension, Marteaus, and Kevintar. She wondered, briefly, if Gargul had not created those monsters, would Serenbeth still be alive?

She takes a deep breath, then asks.

"Are we confronting Kevintar now, as he emerges, because its when he will be at his weakest? The longer we delay, the more power he absorbs from his followers, right?"

She taps her woldsblood reserves, and forms a small illusory image in the air of a giant ogre pushing against a door. The door is buckling, and the soldiers on the other side suddenly open it. The ogre falls flat on its face, and is immediately hacked to pieces by the soldiers.

"Is this, more or less, the plan you have in mind, Lord Gargul?"

Monday July 16th, 2018 9:02:23 PM

Bosk nods as he listens, the enormity of the moral ramifications of what if being asked sinking in. What you are asking... If it was anyone but you... Please tell me, does such an artifact exist or are you asking us to this free willed undead that is also a construct? Does this artifact have to agree to help us? And what will happen to this construct after Kevintar is free? Must it be destroyed as well?
...
...
...
If it must be one of our group, or we must sacrifice the voulenteer, then I would ask that it be me. I can think of no more noble death than for that of the World, nor would I want to have to ride or sacrifice a friend. Lastly, if such a construct must be created, I would sleep better knowing it was fully devoted to Gargul... And everything such beliefs entail...

ooc: I actually would enjoy playing a construct or golem if necessary, and think the RP opportunity would be worth the possibility of character death in the end.

Beri looks at Gargul, then toward Gimp, then Bosk to see if he's missing something... then slowly back to Gargul.
Sooo...
it can only be broken by the undead...
and we are to break it?

I'm not sure if if the fatigue of battle is causing me to overlook something obvious... but we aren't undead.

Beri just lets the though hand and hopes that there is a reassuring answer coming his way.

"For the cult to break the seal I would assume they would also know they require such a thing, otherwise such action now would not be necessary. Do we know how they obtained the knowledge and whether they have a free-willed undead with them? Perhaps we could 'borrow' theirs?"

Tink tries not to grit her teeth too much as Sesha taps into some woldsblood.

DM Mitch
Tuesday July 17th, 2018 8:12:35 AM

Wyaar asks if they made it into the tower but failed to defeat Kevintar would he at least be somewhat contained.

Sesha asks if by confronting Kevintar and being the ones to break him out they assure they face him when he is weak. She even creates a small illusion to illustrate they understood Gargul’s plan.

Bosk asks if the undead construct artifact exists or if one of them has to become it and if the latter he offers himself as a sacrifice. He also asks what is to become of the unique creature once Kevintar is freed,

Beri splits his attention between Bosk, Gimp and Gargul feeling like he is missing something pointing out they themselves are not undead and voicing concerns similar to Bosk’s

Restlin wonders how such a thing could exist.

Tink wonders how the cult could have found a way to free Kevintar and if they have undead that will work for the seal.

Gargul, Lord of Life and Death (CDM Cayzle)
Tuesday July 17th, 2018 9:40:08 AM

Gargul chuckles. "Ah mortals, ever hasty. We will discuss these options and more, my brave heroes. But first understand the entire situation."

"First, the cult, which is no little thing. The seal is at Bone Tower, and the Death Dragon Cult now claims the Tower. It opens periodically. For many years the base of the tower was home to a tribe of orcs. They challenged any who came to compete in a blood tournament, and the winner was allowed to enter the rupture. Agents of the Death Dragon Cult destroyed the tribe several weeks ago. The Cult now guards the approach."

"After defeating the Cult and entering, you will encounter guardians, and past them is the seal. The seal is a pentagon, ten spans across, and made of mithral. To break the seal, a breaker must stand at each point. At the apex, the undead construct. In addition, two other undead and two constructs, also intelligent and free willed, must aid in the ritual. Each one must stand at a point of the pentagon and praise my name. Then the undead must each consume a heart while the constructs burn them. One heart of virtue, one heart of sin, one heart of order, one heart of chaos, and one heart of balance."

"Once the seal is broken, Kevintar will be released. Though you will set events in motion, you will not deliver the killing blow. You do not possess that power. Neither do I, for that matter. Kevintar is made from my essence. If I destroy him, he will be absorbed back into me and I will become as I was before -- implacable and cold in my judgment. It would be very grim for the Wold. There is one who has this power, and who fears the release of Kevintar. It is Marteaus."

"Marteaus believes that his judgement lies in the Bone Tower. However foul and evil Marteaus may be, he is eclipsed by the dispassionate terror that is Kevintar. His judge and executioner is Kevintar. Marteaus is convinced that if Kevintar ever escapes, Kevintar will come after his brother as the greatest evil in the Wold. Marteaus will seek to destroy Kevintar before he regains his full power. They will struggle, and Marteaus will emerge the victor. But Kevintar will not be vanquished without a fight. Their battle will likely grievously wound Marteaus, and deplete the majority of his divine power."

"So yes, little witch, you are right. But it is not you who will attack Kevintar when he is weak."

"What say you now, Dragons, with the fullness of my thought revealed? Do you see alternatives to my plan?"

Consuming hearts while being burned, and working with the admittedly evil Marteaus.
Forgive me for asking this once again, but if even the most learned and devout of the Death Dragon Cult were fooled into believing they were doing the will of Gargul, and not Kevintar, how can we be sure we aren't being led down the same path? I believe that even before crystal was destroyed, we were able to communicate with the other powers, and that the veil wasn't powerful enough to obstruct their view of the events. Is this something that they can corroborate so that we can be sure it is truly the god of death and life that we are serving?

Bosk tries to calm the others nerves. I can cast coming when we are done to verify Gargul is Gargul, and I know Gimp had a special connection with Gargul, so I do not think he could be fooled.

The information so far make sense, even if more vague then I would like. I think we do need to know where we are going to get there undead constructs, two other undead, and five hearts as described.

Sesha thinks.

"Faith, Hope, Joy .. my immortal summons, they are all ghosts and spirits, which are undead in their own right."

She adds.

"If that does not work, well, it's not an idea I relish, but I can create undead with a simple scroll purchase. And since I don't get my power from the .. uh.. traditional godly channels, my sense of alignment will not be affected by the casting." She puts a finger on her nose and thinks some more. "I just don't know how to bind the undead to a construct with a soul."

Tink is quite intrigued by this puzzle. She finds it an interesting conundrum. The part about praising his name feels a little self-indulgent in terms of creating a seal. Meh, when you're a God you can probably afford a little pride.

Gargul asking for alternatives to his plan is another surprise in a surprise filled day. It feels like quite an honor. A God soliciting suggestions from the Iron Dragons? Yep. Honor.

The constructs and undead sound like tools to part of the grander plan. Tink doesn't want to be a yes man and desperately wants to show she can think for herself so tries to come up with anything to say "Seals have many shapes and many forms. Are you able to share an image of the seal so that we can understand what we will face? With Kevintar's power seeping out from the seal, will we be physically and spiritually safe to approach?" Tink relaxes a little and puts her thumb and forefinger to her chin in contemplation "Do you foresee Marteaus coming for Kevintar as soon as the seal is broken? I am wondering whether we will be present when these two great beings clash"

DM Mitch

Garret recaps the fact they need the undead-construct, 2 more undead, 2 more constructs and 5 hearts to be eaten. He points out this doesn’t sound remotely good.

Beri points out some hearts need to be burned and they need to work with Marteus who is evil. He questions if they are dealing with the real Gargul

Sesha says she is sure Gimp would know his master and then asks if there is anyway Kevintar could defeat Marteus

Bosk says he will verify it is Gargul once they are done and although vague the info to him does make sense although vague. He figures they need to know how they are to locate the undead construct, the 2 other constructs and the 2 other undead plus the hearts.

Zane asks what should they work on first, the hearts or the undead, constructs and undead construct and should they look for old heroes willing to pass on or devoted followers of the Gods

Sesha brings up that some of her immortal summons are ghosts which mean they are undead in their own right and that she can create undead if need be without affecting her alignment she just doesn’t know how to bind an undead to a construct.

Restlin scratches his head wondering if the God had more insight and waits to hear the answer to Zane’s question

Wyaar is at a loss and just states that he shoots cultists with his bow.

Garret pauses and waits for Gargul to respond. He isn't sure why the god is asking: couldn't he just force the group to do what he wants them to go? And do the dragons even have a choice? After all, there would certainly be consequences for refusing the requests of a powerful god.

Gargul, Lord of Life and Death (CDM Cayzle)  d20=16 ; Gargul-eye rolls to hit Beri
Wednesday July 18th, 2018 11:12:30 AM

Gargul sits back in his chair and grins. "I suppose I have this coming, doubted by mortals, indeed. I could perform miracles, I suppose." He changes as an immediate action into a giant eye 100 feet tall, and rolls onto Beri. He does not roll a natural 1, so he hits and inflicts 1,000 hit points of damage, killing Beri.

Does anybody want to take any actions in the rest of this combat round? Okay, your kindly Campaign DM deduces not.

Next round Gargul rolls back to his throne and changes back to his human avatar, the one he wore when he was Alemi's nemesis, and the archmage who, as a mortal, created the chromatic dragons.

Beri's soul rises like mist from his corpse, and can speak, if it so wishes, in a whisper.

"Does that prove I am indeed the God of Life and Death? You will have to judge for yourself."

"Now, mortal trivialities such as "good" and "evil" make no nevermind to the likes of the gods. But I will say that in former days, I was more ... severe ... than the patient and kindly immortal who sits before you. And that ... severity, perhaps, guided my hand in a bygone age when I crafted this seal and the conditions that would break it."

"Bosk and Zane, you ask where to find the allies you need, or how to create them, and in what order your tasks should be undertaken. But these are matters of fate. I could send my own creatures to perform these tasks to my exact specifications, and I could give you all similar exact instructions, but then you would be mere automata, and not independent agents."

"You see, I have a philosophical belief in the ineluctable power of fate to move events through its agents, the paragons of mortality that are you heroes. That is why I am willing to restore heroes to life, while denying that benefit to almost all others. I believe that in adventurers and heroes, alone among mortals, destiny burns and inspires beyond the ken of gods. We are greater than you, but you have a power we know not, and great events bend around you beyond our ability to guide the courses of the Wold."

"So no, I will not instruct you on the particulars. And that is why I ask if you have some alternative to my own ideas. If you think my means are not "good," young Garret, then achieve my goal in a way that I have not imagined. You know my purpose: to end the danger that Kevintar will enter the Wold and wreak his terrible punishments upon all creation."

"I will say, Sesha, that it is obvious that incorporeal undead cannot serve your purpose, for how can an incorporeal undead devour a corporeal heart? I suspect a clever witch such as yourself would have realized that in a moment."

"Sesha, you also ask if I am sure Kevintar cannot win. I am not sure. I do not know the outcome of this battle. There are too many variables. I do not know if Kevintar will be destroyed. I do not know how weak Marteaus will become. Perhaps they will destroy each other? Regardless, they will fight each other. It is in their nature. Instigating their fight before Kevintar has assumed his full power will save countless lives."

He leans forward. "Will you enter the Tower of Bone, Iron Dragons, break the seal of Kevintar, and allow two maleficent gods to battle so that the Wold may be saved? Or will you swear to achieve my ends in some way unforeseen by me?"

The blond taur is just about to tell Beri he better apologize when when he hears him whisper to The Lord of Life and Death and decides to leave any scolding until later.

Lord Gargul, before we go, I beg that you would grant us three boons. If it so pleases you, could you please show Beri your mercy and restore him back to us. It would make our task much easier to have him among our number, and I am sure he has learned a valuable lesson.

I would further ask that you extend your mercy and favor to those who would help us on our quest, including the souls of the undead, constructs, and those that are responsible for their creation...if within reason.

Lastly, I would ask for some token from you that we may turn to when things are at their worst. So that we might be inspired and our resolve strengthened, and that when we are done others may look upon it and be reminded of your greatness to help spread your teachings to raise up followers throughout the Southern Continent.

It is not that Garret is being disrespectful, more that he figures if a god wants him dead, then he's going to be dead, and that's the way of things in the Wold. Gargul nods. as you speak.

He looks at Tink and says, "I have said much, and the words of a god can be overwhelming. Let me repeat the core of my plan, a plan you may disregard or adapt as fate prompts you."

"Go to Bone Tower. Defeat the cult that has already defeated the orcs formerly there. Secure the entrance. Find two free-willed corporeal undead, two free-willed constructs, and one free-willed undead construct who will declare their devotion to me. Also find five hearts, of creatures powerful and potent, hearts of virtue, sin, order, chaos, and balance. Enter the Tower with these allies. Find the Seal, a large mithril pentagon. Each ally stands on a point of the pentagon, praises me, and either devours a heart, if undead, or burns it, if construct, or devours a burning heart, if both. Then stand back or perhaps flee, for the battle between Kevintar and Marteus will take place."

"And yes, Bosk, tell your allies that if they praise me, they will have my mercy."

He looks at Restlin. "I will not dictate destiny by telling you when to act. But the cult grows in power, so be wary. I would not think hours or even days matter, but I would not wait months."

"You will need your full strength. Your friend has already been restored."
You look, and yes, Beri is already among the living again. The god reaches into his pocket and withdraws a fossilized skull, of a small mammal, like a mouse or a bat. He hands this to Bosk. "Show this to Gimp," the god says, "and he will bless it in my name."

"In fact, I have spent enough time with you. I must speak with other heroes -- heroes tasked with destroying other cells of the Death Dragon Cult throughout the Wold. If you have any other questions, perhaps Gimp will answer if he can. But take what he says with a grain of salt."
