DM RobC - "My impression is that I don't want to do this again!"
Thursday June 28th, 2018 8:11:32 AM

As you see and hear the three new Immortal Powers of the Sargrass, a mist rises from the Plains and forms into a light grey cloud over the three newborn immortals at the center of your circle. In the rising mists you see the avatars of gods ... a great silver dragon ... a greater gold dragon ... an all-seeing eye ... a waxing moon ... a blue-eyed dove ... and others besides.

"Oh hello!" You jump in alarm as you are greeted by a small fellow who appears in the middle of the group! He was not there a second ago! He is a funny-looking thing, with a body shaped kind of like a strawberry, but with long spindly arms and short spindly legs. He has mud on his feet -- red glowing mud, though the redness fades away after just a moment. Something about him seems a little bit infernal ... the tiny horns? The scaly skin? Something. But surely no evil demon could sport such an honestly happy grin!

Know Planes or Religion DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: { Is it possible that this being has recently been walking in mud made of dirt mixed with Woldsblood? }

"Well, now! Nicely done! NICELY done, indeed," the happy outsider declares. "While you all distracted that crazy Sarr, the gods have set things to right and anchored the Plains right where they belong. Good job."

He rises on his tiptoes to get a peek at what Armand is writing in his journal. "When you describe me try and fit in the words 'dashing' and 'handsome'" The little guy puffs out his chest and turns to give a view of his side profile.

"Yes. Right. Ahem." He folds his hands in front of him, and composes his face into a serious expression. The short guy clears his throat, glances down at his hands and then says formally, "The blood of the Wold has returned where it belongs. The infection called the Bloodgrass is beaten back and tamed. The Plains, preserved by the power of the Fey Queen, are returned and tied into the Wold as they should be. And now life will spring anew throughout this land. You who have responded to the call of the gods, you have earned a place in the history of the Wold, and you have the gratitude of the gods."

If you have sharp eyes, then make a Perception check vs DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {You note that this speech was actually jotted down on the fellow's palms.}

The goofy devil bows and tips an invisible hat to you. He grins again.

"You got questions, ask 'em. You wanna kvetch, I'm all ears. And if we're done, then it's time to send you home."

If you are looking toward the center of the circle, you see the three new Powers merging with the mist and joining the gods.

"Well I for one am happy that none of our party died in this battle....though I could be wrong, Beodir seems to have disappeared during the combat. I'm not sure what to ask of you really. Oh I know. The Tree of Parting indicated to us that it was going into a dormant period which could last a long time. Do you know anything of this? And also we were given a sapling and nut of the Tree to try and find suitable places to plant. Do you have any ideas where we should do that?"

DM RobC - "BAMF!"
Friday June 29th, 2018 7:34:16 PM

Atlas calls Gimp out for reading something off his hand "Be prepared, am I right? It felt like the occasion need a little pomp"

The party have a few questions about the Tree which seems to perplex Gimp and gets him a little animated. "A tree? After all this you're concerned about a tree? What sort of... wait, hold on a moment" Gimp places his finger to his ear and turns his head away and has what looks like a private conversation.

"Yep... Right... You mean? Ok... And the? Oh... So the? Right. Should I?.. Gotcha"

Gimp turns back to the party "I was just testing you of course. The Tree of Parting, am I right? The big man says that the Tree was put into a state to protect itself. Seems the Fey Queen knew something was coming to attack all the flora and wanted it covered. She's pretty good like that. The big man doesn't really do the whole plant growing thing so you might want to keep the little version you have safe. Just in case."

Owen asks about the Sphinx "Yeah.... nah. My orders are to send you guys on your way home. So let's get you going! Time's a-wasting!"

The Imp takes a few steps away from the party. He gives a final cheeky grin and then shoots you with finger-guns. "BAMF!"

The plains, and the gods, and the other adventurers all vanish in a swirl of fog and you find yourself in a blank space between worlds. All you see here is one another.

Oh, and Mahyawu, the Manfri who sent you on this quest in the first place. "Congratulations," he says with his soft tones "I knew you were the right ones. Here. I have something here for you.""

He produces three wooden boxes and opens each lid. Inside the first is a small pile of emeralds. The brightest and cleanest cut you have ever seen. Inside the second is a collection of diamonds, each as clear as the next. Inside the third box are rubies - blood red. "Representing each of the Powers you have helped restore"

Osul can't pick up any weather at all in this little pocket of space, unless "nothing" counts as a weather forecast? If so, he's 99% sure in a forecast of "nothing".

Mack has just about had enough of this planar hopping, a sentiment shared by Elyngael. What's a person got to do to get back to normal ground?

Owen is grateful for the gift while Armand tries to put a price on it.

As soon as Armand touches the chests the white space surrounding the party starts to fade to black. Mahyawu holds his hand outstretched in much the same way he did when you first met. It can only be a gesture of farewell. Will you ever see him again? Time will tell.

Once the surrounds fade to total blackness, they fade back to white. But it's not really white. It's just that your eyes are still adjusting. With your vision returning you can start to make out some colors. It doesn't take much longer for the complete picture to come into view: standing in a field of bright green grass, sun shining, and a clear blue sky. A fresh country breeze brushes past your cheek and the warmth of your sun on your face gives a sense of calm. Behind you are the chests. Up ahead though, perhaps some quarter-mile you can see the broad boughs of the Tree of Parting.

You can see movement around the Tree. It looks like the residents but they are yet to see you.

Finally. Home.

As part of their requirements for membership, I was tasked with investigating an unknown problem: several of their diviners and seers had received visions of a terrible threat approaching, near the Culverwood. DM RobC - "No telling how long we've been gone"
Tuesday July 3rd, 2018 6:22:56 AM

It's been a long journey for the party. You've ventured throughout the outlying areas, travelled to other planes, engaged in a full scale battle on the Southern Continent and now finally you return home.

Approaching the Tree you can see that already it is showing signs of returning to its full and wondrous beauty. It won't be long before the days of its hibernation are long in the past.

The folk of the Tree still look to be repairing things. They're as resilient as the Tree itself it would seem.

It's Liliput that sees the party first. She gives a small shriek and moves her hand across her chest in some sort of protective ritual. She draws the attention of those nearby who then see the source of her scream: you.

There are gasps and confused looks. It only takes a few moments for Miles to arrive and see what is going on.

"Well 'Lems left lung what have we here?" he seems pretty calm and even happy "Looks like Ciyradyl owes me two gold coins" Miles approaches the party and gives Atlas a slap on the back "Good to have you all back, Wardens. How about a drink and you can tell us of your travels?"

The onlookers are still whispering amongst themselves but are visibly relaxing. They're starting to be very happy to see you.

Armand is the one who is first to notice it. At the base of the Tree is a small stone tablet surrounded by fresh wildflowers. Carved into it reads: "In memory of the Wardens. The brave souls who cared for all. Forever in our hearts"

OOC: Could you all please email me your WBLs? Is Atlas the only one already at 49k?

"We're happy to share our stories, lead the way my friend. And tell me, how long has it been?"

James takes in Armand's praise. "Thankyou sir. I tried to keep things as intended for what I knew would be your return. The larder is understocked right now, but I look forward to filling it again." James is no longer hiding his joy at your return and is no doubt going through all the things that need to be put in order once more.

He takes Enylgael's quiver and leaves it standing by the door to remind him on his next shopping visit.

Owen is shocked (and probably a little happy) that Gaston is dead. There's no chance of him coming back to seek revenge on the party. No sir-ee. No way at all. Dead guys don't come back.

Khan finally gets to have some fun and free rein. The last Elyngael sees is him trotting off towards the west.

Mack and Squeaver try and find a small stream to dip their toes in. When was the last time the Wold just stood still for a while so that you could enjoy a few simple things in life?

Osul enjoys riding the breeze in red tailed hawk form. He can close his eyes and glide, using the air current to keep him aloft.

While half of the party are out relaxing in nature (Mack, Squeaver, Khan and Osul) the other half relax in their own way: the tavern!

Most folks you walk past give you a nod, a broad smile and a hearty handshake or slap on the back. The tavern is set such that the party have the center table. Miles has seen that the table is already set with ale. "The mutton is on its way" he says with a smile as he gestures towards the table.

Those at nearby tables watch and all turn to face yours. Miles raises his hands and calmly speaks "Now now, folks. Our protectors here are no doubt tired and just looking for a quiet drink and a meal. I'm sure once they've had a chance to rest there will be time for stories"

You do notice that there are more patrons here than there used to be. Evidently trade at the Tree has improved and more travelers and traders come through here.

Armand takes out his journal and refers to it as he tells Owen, and the rest of the patron's at the Triple T, of Gaston's demise. He does this between bites of this meal.

He recounts how the party was summoned to Plateau City for Gaston's trial, and the troubles with the journey. Then he tells them about how they saw Gaston in Prison and Gaston was begging them to cut a deal with him so he could get free and tell the party of a sinister plot. Of course the Warden's were not having any part of that, 1) because they vowed to never trust Gaston, 2) he was in jail and they weren't going to do a jail break, 3) the party had no sort of enforcement or legal powers in Plateau City to be able to offer or enforce any sort of deal. Gaston was shocked at this. The party would at best hear him out and then offer to tell the authorities about Gaston's testimony. Of course then 3 Xorn showed up and killed Gaston, as well as some sort of fire elementals. So not only is Gaston dead his corpse was fairly burnt up in the process as well. Though Armand did manage to cast a speak with dead on him, Gaston ever elusive only hinted that there was some lurking conspiracy in the city and environs. The Wardens started to investigate and ran across a strange Golem when Maab appeared and whisked them back to the Tree.

Then Armand will tell the tale of the rest of the adventure in the Sargrass and how its returned and three new powers were born/created.

Owen enjoys a delicious meal at the TTT, and joins in on the tale when appropriate. As a budding Loremaster he is working on improving his storytelling. When the battle with the bandits comes up, he tries to be subtle... but can't resist talking about taking out a whole ship by himself. And there was great teamwork among the Wardens. That too. Yeah.

What started as an afternoon drink turns into dinner and then into evening drinks. It's a relatively mellow celebration for the return of the Wardens. No chairs upended or mugs smashed. Everyone is relatively well-behaved but that could just be exhaustion. The residents also didn't have much time to prepare since your unexpected return.

There are still some in the tavern looking to make the night continue. Laughs are had and (tall) tales told. The ale flows freely and the room is full of smiles. Everyone is just happy to enjoy life and to see you all alive.

Standing by the window and looking out over the fields you can see the sun turning in for the night. The sunset has never looked more beautiful than it does right now. Vibrant colours amidst the clouds and an overall stillness around the Tree. It's as if the Wold itself is taking a cleansing breath.

Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Right now though, just serenity.

DM RobC - "Of course, it would also be good to do some good here at The Tree."
Monday July 9th, 2018 10:00:25 AM

Several uneventful weeks pass with the party enjoying the serenity of the Tree.

A few venture to "nearby" Plateau City to visit the guilds there. The citizens there are still coming to terms with recent events, and is evidenced by the increased number of guards and their uneasy attitude to strangers.

Shopping is conducted at the Catacombs and there is even enough time to finish those few odd crafting projects that had been on the go.

Ahhhh... rest.

Once back at the Tree the party take on their usual role of helping out. The increased number of travelers does give rise to more trade. Sometimes haggling goes too far and erupts into small arguments and today is no different.

Standing in front of an arms stall a dwarf is arguing with a gnome. The dwarf has long red hair and a beard to match. He looks quite solid and is wearing a chain shirt with signs of dried blood. In his hands he holds a mace with a broken metal shaft. The gnome is bald and wearing a red and yellow tunic. His arms are folded and is barely looking at the dwarf.

"No returns. I made that clear when you bought it" argues the gnome
"Thief! Swindler! The mace broke against a target dummy. What would have happened if I was in combat?" say the dwarf getting quite red in the face "An elf would have made it better!"
"You inspected it and you bought it. It's not my fault what happens after you take it. Yes. Take it and go!"
"You said you bought this in the Scab. No dwarf would have made this. You are a liar and a cheat. Were you but a foot taller I'd show you where the other end of the mace could go"

More words are exchanged and their voices get louder. With the dwarf standing still the gnome starts to nudge the dwarf away from the stall. The dwarf holds his ground, refusing to budge and glaring at the gnome. Things start to escalate quickly. The gnome gives the dwarf a soft push on the shoulder. The dwarf points his finger right into the chest of the gnome. At this the gnome rolls up his sleeves and shoves the dwarf in the chest. The dwarf purses his lips, glares at the gnome and then spits on the ground

And more quietly he adds, "I mean, the increase in trade is a good thing, but I suspect neither the management nor the other traders are going to be happy if this increase is matched by a decrease in the quality of the workmanship of goods being sold."
He thinks he might be able to fix the mace (though certainly not here and now) but doesn't understand the metal well enough to identify the source of the flaw. Otherwise he keeps a Create Water on standby, though he expects to not need it.

After watching for a bit Atlas decides it's time to do something. "Could someone have my back if needed?" And with that he wanders over and inserts himself forcefully between the two, pushing the back with one hand on each of their shoulders. (If the dwarf doesn't budget then I just use him as leverage to push the gnome back further).

"Hey now, there's not going to be any violence on my watch. I'll toss you both into the cooling cell if that's what is needed. I've listened to both of you bicker over this mace the past few minutes and it is clear neither of you is going to be happy with a compromise, and I'm not handing out free money or maces." He turns to the dwarf. "You can either take this as a lesson learned and move on or you can request a formal inquiry into the trading practices of this individual, but I'll not have you beating him to a pulp with your broken mace. If you want to open a formal inquiry then I'll need some information from both of you."

Atlas waits for the dwarf's response.

When in Plateau City Armand reports all that happened in the Sargrass to the Sage's guild. He looks into setting up some sort of messaging system. During the weeks of rest, Owen stops by the Catacombs and picks up a few things. He spends the rest of the time relaxing and studying new spells from scrolls. He seems to have trouble blending his subtle illusions with the offensive power of evocation...

Owen, wandering the markets of the Tree of Parting with the other Wardens, hears the clamor and turns his attention to the dwarf and gnome. Knowledge (Local): 25, 22. If he recognizes them, he calls them by name and asks them what the problem is. If not, he looks about to see if anyone is taking advantage of the distraction, but is likely a bit lost in the whirl of the marketplace. Perception: 7.

She states calmly looking at the dwarf and the gnome with her hand gently stroking Khan's head.

DM RobC - "I'm sure this can be resolved fairly."
Tuesday July 10th, 2018 7:08:59 AM

The party decide it's time to step in and settle/defuse this situation. No trouble is too great or small for the Wardens.

Osul acts the strong silent type, watching intently and readying a water spell just in case.

Atlas acts the strong type, imposing himself between the pair. There is no resistance from either although they are both clearly surprised by it all. There is no formal inquiry or legal board per se. If anyone causes a problem Miles simply bans them from trade, or escorts them away, or gives them a hiding serious enough to keep them from coming back. It's a system that has worked for quite some time and having the backing of the Wardens has made his job significantly easier. Who wants to say no to the guy with combat veterans on his side?

Mack acts as backup and for some reason plays a tension building tune on the harmonica. To be honest, everyone watching is a little surprised by it. Well, those that know him aren't that surprised.

"What? You can't even punch a guy around here?" The dwarf rubs the knuckles on his right hand. He appears both surprised and disappointed. He isn't putting up a challenge to Armand though.

The gnome guy looks to relax a little. Seems things are going his way.

Owen keeps his eyes open in case this is a distraction. He doesn't recognize either the dwarf or gnome. Presumably they are new to the trading here. Nearby trade though has paused for the time being as all eyes turn to see what is going on. What started as a disagreement got close to a fight and then the Wardens themselves intervened. Quite a sight to behold.

Elyngael goes for the intimidation route. If Atlas can't settle them down she's pretty sure she - or Khan - can. The gnome takes half a step back. The dwarf does seem bothered at all by the sight of Khan, barely acknowledging him.

Armand tries to get a little more information. He whispers to a nearby chap to see if the pair are known, but all he get is a non-committal shrug.

Armand then takes the opportunity to have a look over the wares of the gnome. It's quite clear nothing here is new. Every piece of equipment (and it is all arms) has scratches or little dints to it. It all looks quite usable, just not new by any means.

The gnome leans towards Armand, keeps his eyes on the dwarf and snips "I only said I bought it in the Scab. I never said it was made there or anything"

The dwarf inhales deeply to try and keep his cool.

Looks like the weapons of losers in a battle. I hope you didn't pay too much for them or you too have been taken."

Armand looks sadly at the Dwarf. "It appears the gnome was perhaps less than forthright in his dealings. Much of his inventory has seen better days."
Diplomacy 13 (d20+10)

Armand looks about the market place. "Perhaps we can find you something better. I wonder if there is a stall from House Dul'g in the area. The Tree has a trading agreement with them. Granted it's with Drow, but if they have anything for sell I'm pretty sure that it will be far better made than this...shoddy ware." Armand will then wander the merchants in search of anyone carrying some books. They have a large library of empty shelves in the Tree. Library

The dwarf seems happy with the deal he got. he thanks the group, apologises for his outburst and is soon on his way. life goes on at the tree. you have been here so infrequently of late that it seems alien, like coming back to your hometown after begin gone for years, but soon, with everyone at the tree so kind and friendly the feeling of being home comes back. some things tickle memories

Lilliput singing as she takes care of the leafy chapel. she has a very pretty voice and her songs of love of Alemi seem to have an extra dimension of beauty when she sings them.

Laughingwater and Hiflanyl working the lifts and squaring things away. there is always a conversation going with those two. that often involves a joke, their laughter is so everpresent its absence is odd.

Miles is always a sight, walking straight-backed and stern around the tree. he's imposing, but he always has a bit of caramel wrapped in a corn husk for the kids. they follow him like a bunch of puppies.

far up in the tree, you hear the tink tink of Boolia's jewellery work. and all the other sounds that go with the tree, not the least of which is the constant sussruss of the wind blowing through the branches.

The day passes in relaxed slowness. then in the evening, most folks go to the Triple T, for drinks and entertainment. many clamors for stories from the Tree Wardens, all wishing to know what went on during the last adventure.

Owen practices with Atlas, it’s prudent to increase both martial skill and team cohesivity.

Mack: & Atlas: You notice that the tree of parting is positively loaded with fruit, nuts, and berries of all types. There is even Caco, vanilla and Tonka beans growing on the tree. The Tree’s foliage thought is turning the glorious golds, reds, and browns of fall.. the tress is going to sleep but far be it from the Tree of Parting to leave it’s denizens hungry.

Armand: yes. But you are famous now, and your fans want to hear your stories again and again. On the bright side though, you haven’t paid for a meal since you got back.

‘Osul: calls for a discusson about where to place the sapling. It’s a valid question. What was once a sprout of less than a foot of height is now a proper sapling at just a bit over 4 ft and it seems to be growing taller ever day.

Elyngael & Yurr'Neshi The Microenvironment around the tree is amazing. The density of life here is easily 3 times what it is elsewhere in the wold. Prey animals from the very large to the tiny, birds of every shape and size, hidden ponds and streams abound, which is odd as a tree this size should drink up all the water from all around, but fish positively crowd the waters. Where prey is so come the predators. A small pride of Smilodon’s and a short faced bear hunt the big animals, but seem smart enough to keep out of sight of the Humans and simply enjoy the largesse. Bobcats, ocelots, Mink, martin and stoats even tiny shews all hunt here. The tree drops enough food that it’s an all you can eat buffet around the tree. Hunting is beyond easy. Choose what you want and it’s only slightly harder than walking out and getting it.

OOC: sorry guys. During the crossover event we were marching to the beat of a different drummer and as such we had no time to put together a new adventure. RobC is working on it now, but It will probably be as much as a week before we can get started. I’m trying to get approval for a min adventure from the PTB…we will see.

OoC: That's okay, we can make our own fun!

IC: Inspired by the training yesterday, Owen gathers the other Wardens together: "Everyone has been rather out of sorts lately, what with the world almost ending and whatnot. A lot of the residents of the Tree are still pretty worried about the next imminent disaster. Why don't take their minds off of it? Let's have a few days of games, like Atlas and I were doing with the training yesterday--but a competition, instead!"

With that, he heads out to the grounds beneath the Tree and sets up an illusory obstacle course for the Wardens and the folk of the Tree. Here's how it works:

The course is 260 feet long in total. Make adjustments to the total distance based on your performance on each obstacle, then divide the remainder by your base movement speed to figure out how long it took you:

Obstacle 1: Three burning barriers block your path, each crackling with heat and flame! Acrobatics DC 10, 12 and 16: For each check made, subtract 10 feet from the total. For each check failed, add five feet as you stumble in pain.
Obstacle 2: A wolf approaches! Intimidate DC 20 to scare it away and subtract 30 feet in a burst of vigor, or Handle Animal DC 15 to shoo it away gently and subtract 10 feet. If you fail the first, you must flee and add 30 feet to your total; if you fail the second, you can skirt around it and add only 5 feet.
Obstacle 3: A series of trivia questions flash brightly in your eyes! Ten of them, in fact, one for each type of Knowledge check. They are tricky, but not too difficult: about DC 15. For each one you can answer, the path forward becomes more clear and you subtract 5 feet from your total.
Obstacle 4: At the halfway point of the race, where runners must turn around and return at speed, there is a tall stone maze. You have four options, but you can only choose one and you don't know what the results will be in advance. Results for both pass and fail are listed in the spoilers.
Stealth DC 25 Highlight to display spoiler: {Pass: You sneak past the maze entirely, evading everyone's notice! Subtract 60 feet! Fail: You are caught and add 90 feet as the crowd of onlookers hurls heads of lettuce at you!}
Perception DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {Pass: Your keen eyes spot the fastest way through the maze, but you'll have to make an Escape Artist check against DC 10 to squeeze through. If you succeed, subtract 30 feet; if you fail add 20. Fail: You run the maze as normal, getting lost only once on the way. Add 30 feet to your total.}
Ride DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Pass/Fail: You grab a nearby Minotaur and attempt to ride him through the labyrinth. Wait, that was a terrible idea! You add 40 feet as you get both lost and stomped on.}
Swim DC 10 Highlight to display spoiler: {Why would you swim through a maze? Pass: It seems to work; subtract 10 feet. Fail: You feel silly; add 5 feet.}
Obstacle 5: A steady wind blows in your face! Con or Wis check DC 10 to weather it or be at peace with it, respectively. If you fail the check, add 15 feet to your total.
Obstacle 6: A bleeding wound appears on your legs! Make a DC 15 Heal check to stop the bleeding with your own clothing or a DC 15 Survival check to find a nearby plant that will close the wounds naturally. If you fail the Heal check, you slip on your own blood and add 10 feet. If you fail the Survival check, you get really, really itchy and add 20 feet as you stop to scratch.
Obstacle 7: A giant boss monster attacks you! Describe the horrible creature! You have two tries to make a DC 20 melee- or ranged attack roll to defeat it or add 20 feet as you are snacked on. Alternatively, Sense Motive DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {It just wanted a hug until you started to attack it! If you succeed, it gives you a hug and then hurls you across the finish line, subtracting 40 feet from your total! If you fail, you give it an awkward side-hug and add ten feet in your confusion.}

As he exits the maze almost immediately he is face with a steady wind that for some reason really affects his forward progress.

As the wind abates Neshi notices a seriously bleeding wound on his leg nut manages to quickly staunch the blood with some of his leather strips and some cloth.

Up ahead Neshi can see a colossal figure pacing across the race path.

The beast's 60 foot armored and spiked body shook the ground with each step of its massively clawed feet and its tail was knocking aside trees as if they were match sticks Its protruding lower jaw was filled with multiple rows of hand sized teeth dwarfed by its massive horned brow.its size belies the beast's quickness as it senses Neshi's approach and whips around to face him.

Up to this point Neshi wasn't to terribly worried about the course but to be faced with a thing of nightmares, A Tarrasque, for god's sake starts having him rethink his non use of magic, as that true strike wand would come in handy right about now.

Whipping out one of his his javelins, he lets fly with it and watches with glee and it strikes the beast right between the eyes on the first try. dc 25.

Atlas perks up at the thought of an obstacle course! He does his best not to watch as Owen sets it up, then he jumps in as soon as it is ready. Unfortunately, as he approaches the line Neshi blasts by him and makes short work of the course. "Wow! Well done Neshi! I don't think I'm going to be able to beat that, but I'll give it a try."

Atlas begins the course strong, getting past the first two burning bushes with ease, but he trips over his own feet with the third one and manages to singe all the hair off his left arm. He shrugs it off and heads over to the wolf, where he gets big and growls at the wolf, scaring it off so that the other challengers will be hard pressed to even find it.

This is where things get tough. Atlas has been around long enough to know that he doesn't know a lot compared to others. However, he gives it his best.

Atlas is proud of how well he did on the questions, but he looks at the maze in a perplexed way. He doesn't really know what to do, so he tries...and fails miserably. The maze has certainly done him in, but the ride was worth it!

Leaving the maze, Atlas faces the wind of his life, struggling to make progress against it to the next obstacle. Somehow he manages to get a cut on his leg in the process and feels impelled to do something about it. He looks about for some healing herbs and finds exactly what he is looking for. He picks some and rubs it on the cut, only to realize too late that it is actually poison oak! He tries to rub it off, but it is too late, he's already itching and blisters are starting to form. He gives up and moves on.

Low and behold, as he is walking he comes face to toenail with an ancient red dragon! He quickly names him Sizzle, pulls his sword and says, "Thou shalt not pass!" He raises his sword in two hands and brings it down into the dragon's foot, which causes the creature to roar and hop around one one foot until he tips over. Atlas quickly moves into position and finishes the dragon by driving his sword into the back of its head. He then quickly runs over to the finish line!

OOC: This was fun, thanks! I did screw up though, I read wrong and rolled for all 4 of the options for the maze. Based on that it is hard not to cheat, so I'll just take the one where it didn't matter if you passed or failed. It does seem like the one Atlas would do though!

IC: Owen congratulates Yurr'Neshi on a fabulous run, thumping him heartily on the back.

Once everyone who wants to run the obstacle course has, Owen gives it a shot himself. It has added difficulty for him, because to run it he'll have to stop concentrating on the illusion: he'll have only 40 seconds or so to run before it disappears. And in any case, he's sure to be comically slow.

The Race:
Owen surprises himself as he leaps the first two hurdles, only to grow overconfident and get slightly singed on the third. His shock only grows, however, as his furious effort to shoo the wolf away succeeds! He rolls into a jaunty stride as he reaches the trivia questions, his area of expertise.... but he misses the Dungeoneering question, to his embarrassment and chagrin! He decides to try swimming through the maze, since without invisibility he'd fail to sneak by. It works, surprisingly! He is at peace with the wind, jogging along gently until a wound opens up on his leg. He deftly ties a bandage... just higher than the wound. The leaking blood undoes his footing. The boss monster is a tall army commander with pointed spikes on his bronze armor. Two dagger tosses miss, and Owen is kicked in the stomach. He hobbles across the finish line with a time of 6.67. Just two seconds after he finishes the race, the illusionary obstacle course disappears.

OoC: Wow!, I'm really impressed with Owen right now. He missed only four or five checks, and missed them (except for the very last one) by no more than two.

Miles is the first to mention that a martial event aught to be had. then laughingwater mentions that a race to the top of the tree would be fun. Ciyradyl chimes in that she has an idea for a cooking competition where the best cooks would square off and have a day to cook with a random ingredient that she chooses. Lorifir mentions that most everyone here can shoot a bow and a test of archery skill might entice folk to practice more. Sadie has a quick quiet conversation with Boolia and Dungarth then stands up and announces that the three of them will provide medals for the winners. Excitement builds, but a steady voice cuts through the wild imaginings. it's Folbre Ilyndrathy, the Manager, Mayor really of the Tree of Parting. This is all well and good, but remember we have a community to run, let's slow the pace down a bit. We will have one game a day, we'll try and time it so that the maximum amount of folk can come to watch it. I think with coordination we can maintain our obligations and still let everyone have a good time. . The two Ryans, Mystbender and Inger, suggest a story and poetry competition that can be held at the Triple T, they Nominate Arnos Faulk to judge, since being a published author it would be unfair for him to compete.

Elyngael you wander the land around the tree, letting your senses and your imagination guide you. You don't know if its a daydream or a vision, but your mind paints a picture of a vast copse of Trees just like the Tree of parting, their branches touching like roads and thousands of people living in harmony in the Trees. A city in the tree tops.

Owen tells a story about his son, Simon. He learned about books when he was just a baby, because Owen was a scholar and his wife was a librarian. He knew that one looked at books, but didn't have the ability to understand them or to turn the pages, so he would just stare at whatever book was nearby until someone read it to him. "It was rather disconcerting at first! You could walk around a room holding him and his eyes would stay locked on whatever dusty tome you happened to have out. But we figured it out soon enough.", Owen says with a mild chuckle and a half smile. It is clear that his mood has shifted toward sadness in recalling the story.

Hopefully someone will share a humorous story to cheer him up.

Plans are made and rules hashed out. Times set and lists drawn up. Tomorrow starts with the race to the top of the tree. It’s a timed event. Contestants will meet at the base of the tree by the main lift. Lots will be drawn to determine everyone’s place and numbers assigned. When the whistle blows the first runner will begin his run. 1 minute after he starts the whistle will blow again and the next runner will start. The judge will be at Triple T where the finish line is when he hears the whistle he writes the time down by the first number. He then does so for each number as they are indicated. Once all runners have completed their run the times will be tallied and a winner announced. That takes a while to hash out, and by the time it’s done, eyes are getting heavy and folk are ready for bed. The meeting adjourns and folk depart.

Elyngael You do see a track, but in the darkness, you cannot discern what it is, it could be an Ogre, but it could also a bear that slipped a bit while walking.

[Owen?

Mack: ?

Atlas: ZZZZZZZ.....

Armand: The story competition is on the agenda, but it's not scheduled yet.

‘Osul: darkvision isn't as good at tracking as regular vison, but with rolls that good you could track by sense of smell. Yes, it's an Ogre track, there are three in fact. plus an unknown number of smaller humanoid tracks...probably orc. they passed this way no more than 24 hours ago and as recently as 4 hours ago. the tracks are running parallel to the tree, not toward it

Elyngael Kahn takes a sniff and the hackles rise on the back of his neck. Whatever it is, he don't like it. as far as following the tracks...he loses it after a couple of feet.

Yurr'Neshi ?

'Osul and Elyngale found what might be evidence of a reinforced Orc war party, either passing through or just arriving to the area. it's late and the tree is organized in such a way as it's very hard to sneak up on it at night. you tow are going to have to either fly up to the tree to get back or have the night guard lower down a lift to get back to the tree.

'Osul flies up and above the trees for bearings, then returns and shifts back to human form, and relates his sense of things to Elyngael... {compressing components of the overall conversation for the sake of brevity}
"A few ogres and many orcs, maybe not all at once (not together?), but heading the same direction in the last day or so, but not in about a watch or so."
"So we really should let the other wardens know."
"Speaking of watches, Elyngael, I don't think we should bother the night guard. Do you have any ideas on how we all get back up in the tree? I have one so far ... do you think both you and Khan would have any problems riding a dire bat? A huge dire bat if needs be?"

I have no problem riding a dire bat and as long as Khan is with me, he will be fine, too. Let's get back, get some rest, and consult with the others. Then I for one, am coming back here and scouting for any more suspicious movement." Elyngael and Khan mount the huge dire bat, grateful for the silent and speedy ride back to the Tree.

Owen finds himself restless and can't sleep, luckily the tree is a good place to pace, the rocking, the sound of the wind in the branches, it's both relaxing and conductive to deep thought.

Mack: nobody said that, but that never stops Mack. The tracks were about 4 miles (6.43 Km )from the tree it's still night and you don't know from which direction the Elyngael and 'Osul came back from. so although your rolls were good, there was really nothing for you to find. lots of wildlife. you see a stoat...

Armand: does too.

‘Osul: when out of combat I don't put a lot of restrictions on movement. When time is not a problem and someone is not trying to kill you, you don't have to be a stickler.

Elyngael riding a dire bat is kind of cool, you can just almost hear it's echolocation.

Yurr'Neshi curls up to sleep.

The morning comes and it looks to be a light day at the tree. After the flurry of traders, muleskinners, a baggage trains...a few trappers and adventurers coming by to sell skins, loot and provender up is kind of a welcome change. chores are finished quickly and a sense of excitement and expectation is starting to build at the Tree of Parting.

"Owen that's a great tactic, but let's wait until we see what 'Osul's reconnaissance tells first. Then we can talk about splitting the party. Though in truth if it comes to it, I would feel better having the fighters bringing up the rear. After the magical barriers the magic users erected in the Sarrgrass I'm sure they could hold the line at the Tree for a while."

Armand keeps his eye on 'Osul as he takes wing.

Perception 10 (d20+4) ? do I get any sort of bonus for declaring I was keeping my eyes on him?

As I watch Elyngael take off.... I think the pressure's getting to her. I hope someone can reassure her she's doing just great.

"I like your plan, Owen, except not Elyngael and Khan since they are long gone already. Maybe Neshi and Armand go with you?"

I continue scouting and tracking, while Squeaver keeps an eye out:

Elyngael and Khan run past the Tree northeast to where Osul saw the bugbear tracks. "Why didn't he tell me if he had already seen bugbear tracks? Over and over in her head she keeps replaying: 'Osul notices something, there are fresher tracks of a running bugbear to the side and on top of the older tracks. after a few more hours you come to an Orc camp, it's cold, looks to have been abandoned a few hours ago, the tracks leading away show that the orcs were running, North West....straight toward the Tree of Parting.'
How could Osul have taken us back to the Tree without telling us everything? Or warning the others?" Elyngael asks Khan as they quickly arrive at the cold Orc camp. "We must track northwest carefully. If the bugbear is headed to the Tree we need to stop it, and we need to find out if Osul has been put under a spell to betray his party...or just me?"[/b]

OOC: The GM posted: "after a few more hours you come to an Orc camp". Does anyone think that during that "few more hours", 'Osul doesn't volunteer the information about the bugbear tracks? Or, if he was so distracted by tracks, that he wouldn't answer honestly when asked?
