DM Mark - "Might I ask whereabouts your company calls home?"
Monday July 2nd, 2018 1:27:46 AM

Brom is glad to be back in familiar surroundings. He ignores the chest and starts walking to Magpie Crossing.

Velarin offers quick transportation to Magpie Crossing and relaxing accommodations once everyone’s there.

Barratore finds the whole matter frustrating. He picks up the chest and assumes a misty form as he rises into the air. He heads toward Magpie Crossing, surveying the area as he goes.

Tishe tries to wrap her head around this whole experience. She wonders about what just happened as she casts a Fly spell and rises into the air.

Sir Royston asks where the company calls home, and if he might find bit if rest there.

All here in the crater can see the body of the purple worm, the remains of the iron golems. The remains from earlier battles are here as well, though the older carcases have been picked at by scavengers since. It smells bad here too.

But gone is the bloodweed.

From Barratore and Tishe’s high vantage points, they can see all the bloodweed is gone. But so is much of what it destroyed. Animals and people, driven mad by the bloodweed tore at each other. There is much death. But there is life as well. Smoke rises from farmhouse chimneys in the distance. You see a wagon or two on the road.

Brom encounters a wagons on the road just beyond the crater. The reaction is hostile, the two you men driving the wagon fearfully raise clubs. They’re little more than boys. In trembling voices, they demand know what the barbarian wants and telling him that they want no trouble but will fight if they have to. Barratore sees this potential confrontation below him as he whizzes toward Magpie Crossing.

Those at the crater can hear the shouted warning from the two. Tishe sees the wagon and Brom, but the scene is out of sight for the others on the ground.

Barratore continues on, Brom was a Keeper of the Vale, one of the more traveled members of the group at that. He is a Champion rank member of the WLA and wears the badge of that office, just as Barratore does. The momentary panic of a pair of children will not give Brom any issues.
Barratore banks and changes direction deciding to swing over each of the towns, following the roads.

First he flies west towards the Pillar of Cnut, and onto Jarlwolf to land and try and assure the people the threat of the Bloodweed has been eliminated. From there, he will continue to Witchspawn to say more of the same and then, along the southern road to Merrydale. Finally he will head to Magpie to meet with the others

Brom is not surprised by the reaction of the two men. With all the things that have been happening, everyone is on edge.

Leaving his sword hanging on his back, he puts his hands on his hips before speaking. "My name is Brom, from the Keepers." he says. "I don't want ta cause trouble. I am returning home to Magpie Crossing after fighting the bloodweed." He continues while showing his WLA badge. "Why are you out here? I would have thought everyone would have pulled back away from the crater while the bloodweed was there."

With that being said, Emrys speaks the Words of Recall and instantly transports back home with whomever wish to come along.

Tishe’ watches Brom, but the barbarian seems to be handling the encounter without raising voices, an d so the Spellweaver turns to Royston’s question. “We Wall in Cinnamon Valley, Sieur Royston. And we are the heroic pack pledged to keep these people safe. I haven’t been weaving with the Keepers long,” and she looks towards Brom with laughter in her eyes, “yet I have been forcibly told I am a full member. Therefore, you are most well come to rest a while in our shade “

Tishe’ prefers a more leisurely travel back to Magpie Crossing, the better to gauge the damage to the land and the people. In the meantime, despite the smell, she floats about the crater, searching with her innate Detect Magic ability for any treasure that may have been left from earlier battles or by the Crystal.

Barratore has vanished into a mist with the chest. He pauses for a moment as Brom encounters a wagon on the road, but concludes the Barbarian likely has things well in hand and travels on. As he does, he sees there is a good deal of activity below him - mostly related to rebuilding and repair. Clearly, the bloodweed infestation took a toll on the area. He arrives in Jarlswold and sets down, assuming corporeal form. A crown quickly begins to gather around the minotaur, though none dare speak.

Brom speaks to the youths in the wagon. He says who he is and flashes his WLA pin. ”Wow. You’re Brom? The Keepers' Brom? Gee, we’re sure sorry to greet you like that. We’re on our way to Magpie Crossing to sell some things. We’re , um, we’re….”

Suddenly a voice come from the back of the wagon, and a boy about 5 years old throws back a tarp. ”We’re orphans now, ‘cuz mom and dad was killed by the wolves. But we was safe up on the loft. And Adney an’ Cal here defended us and killed the wolves. But they almos’ lit the barn on fire. But they didn’t cause Pa put it out afore he died. An Sessa was there, but she and Aggie are back at the farm, ‘cuz sumbody’s gotta take care of the animals while Adney an’ Cal go to town to sell stuff so we have sum money, an…”

The child is cut off by the older boys, as they glare angrily at him.. ”TASSEN! CUT IT OUT! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING HERE?”

“We’re sure sorry Mr. Brom. Tassen’s not even ‘sposed to be here an’ our sisters are gonna be aweful worried.”
The other continues, ”Adney, we’re gonna have to go take Tassen back afore we go to Magpie. Sessa’ll be aweful worried if we don’t. We’re sure sorry to bother you Mr. Brom.” The boys turn the wagon around as Tassen protests from the back. Brom can see a variety of household good and a few weapons now uncovered in the back of the wagon.

Emrys decides to pop home with Daemon, and Edson joins him - glad for the quick trip and the promise of rest after their ordeal. They find the town a buzz of activity as they arrive.

Tishe turns her attention back to the crater and casts a Detect Magic and surveys area. Sir Royston shows a number of magic auras. But her keen eye catches a few glints of magic in the crater. It seems there are a few remnants of the destroyed crystal that are magic! As she does so, she makes it clear to Sir Royston that he is welcome at their place in Magpie Crossing.

Sir Royston asks Tishe and Velarin as the only two remaining, "Are you good folk heroes of this town where we are going? I heard the term 'Keepers' bandied about.”

Tishe’ looks at the DragonSorcerer, not quite sure she is believing her ears: he is asking again?! Thinking back, Royston has been told the group’s name three times already. OK, so Barratorre told him welcome after the Purple Worm fight in the name of the Defenders of the Vale, but Velarin said ‘Keepers’ after the Crystal battle, and just seconds ago Tishe’ herself said the same thing!

She collects the magical bits of Chrystal and returns to Velarin and Royston. Maybe it was her Sargrass accent? Tishe’ strives to be clear.

“Royston. Yes, we are the Keepers of the Vale. We have a Manor in Magpie Crossing. You are invited to stay with us. Would you like to do that?”

V nods agreement with Tishe' welcoming Royston. "Right. So I think that's settled then. Since Brom and Barratore are taking the long route to see what is left between here and there, I'm for joining Emrys and taking his recall back to the crossing." V looks at Royston. "Shall we?"

DM Mark - "Are you good folk heroes?"
Wednesday July 4th, 2018 12:50:40 AM

(Your DM is getting confused by who’s going where and how. But here’s where I think we are: Emrys previously cast Wind Walk on everyone, so everyone has the option of turning to mist and moving at a very fast rate for the next 14 hours. Brom chose to walk. Barratore left on his own with the mystery chest and is using Wind Walk to visit the larger communities in the Cinnamon Valley. Emrys cast Word of Recall to take Daemon, Edson and himself straight to the heroes’ home in Magpie Crossing. Still at the crater, but able to Wind Walk are Velarin, Tishe and Royson.)

Brom returns with the boys to their farm. It takes a couple hours to get there and it’s now midday. As they arrive, he can see some burned areas and the animals are missing. There is a large garden area, and he does see a few chickens that seem to have survived. He also sees two fresh mounds nearby suggesting a recent burial. The children do their best to be good hosts, but the efforts are a bit clumsy and touched with a great deal of sadness. They are heartened that someone with as important as one of the Keepers is here to visit them. The boys decide they will set out for Magpie Crossing the next day and hope that Brom will stay the night and go with them in the morning as it will take the better part of the day to get to Magpie Crossing. The young stowaway Tassen seems to regard Brom as more a playmate than a guest, and wants to recount the battles against the infected animals as only a 5 year old boy can. All there seem to eat up any tales that Brom has about what happened.

Barratore will be met with joy and sadness in Jarlswolf. He issues some instructions and says he must be off. He learns most of those in the town survived - the countryside was harder hit. A dwarf named Dorik Riverstone shows up. He tells Barratore that the Pitchfork Council has been in communication and that matters are being organized and addressed, though not quite to Dorik’s liking. He says the Council will be relieved to know the Keepers have returned as they’ve been gone for over a month, and it was only a couple days ago that the bloodweed suddenly disappeared. (Unless he has more to add or ask,) Barratore heads to Witchspawn.

Emrys and Edson return to Magpie Crossing. As they appear, they are quickly noticed as some seem to run off while others nearly mob the two, peppering them with questions - what happened, where were they, why were they gone so long, what happens now, is it all over, where did the bloodweed go?

Indeed Angus is not there, but shows up soon. The normally taciturn man has been very active. He’s also rather dusty and dirty. He has organised the coven members and some neighbors into a busy group, running around effecting repairs, providing healing, encouraging others. But there is still much to do. It seems those in Magpie Crossing fared pretty well, but had to hold the town against infected animals and some infected farmers! Most were killed in the process, but some were subdued. And it was found that when the bloodweed disappeared, so did the sickness from any remaining animals or people.

Edson relaxes.

Back at the crater, Tishe is a bit puzzled that Royston is asking about their group again, but she replies pleasantly to the man. She finds four fist sized crystals that detect as magic.

Velarin also scans the crater for magic, but finds nothing more that what Tishe already recovered. As she turns to reply to Emrys about his proffered teleportation back to town, he finds the Bloodwitch has already vanished with Edson.

Royston seems to be a bit puzzled about the Keepers, but he is grateful for the invitation to their place in Magpie Crossing.

With the rotting purple worm remains, this crater smells pretty bad.

Brom looks about at the farm and wonders if all the farms on the outskirts of the towns are as badly hit as this one. Brom enjoys the time he spends with the family. He tells his stories; he listens to theirs.

He agrees to stay the night. Brom is awake after a couple of hours, as a result of his magical ring, and spends the night outside surveying the farm and the damage caused by the bloodweed infection. Brom spends a lot of time thinking about things.

The next morning before they head out, Brom comes to the oldest kids and tells them he is going to help them. He will take them, all of them if they wish, to Magpie Crossing and get the things they need and make sure they get back safely. He will not take no for an answer.

DM Mark - "Are you good folk heroes?"
Thursday July 5th, 2018 12:21:14 PM

Brom enjoys his time with this family of newly created orphans, and he finds he is finally able to relax. Which strikes him as odd. He’s a fighter at heart, and he’s always relied on his might and rage to solve things. And lately, it’s been non-stop fighting for him and his friends.

But there is something relaxing here. No, not relaxing - something... It's the way they care for each other. Though they are really still just five children, with ages ranging form 16 down to 5, they all pull together in the same direction, stepping in where there is need, filling in for each other. Most of all, they listen to each other. And Brom is drawn in somehow. Maybe it’s because he remembers what it was like to be an orphan - but they don’t have an uncle to look out for them the way he did.

Brom helps where he can, and informs the oldest ones that he wants them all to go with him to Magpie Crossing. At first they balk, but as they realize that all they have to take care of now are some chickens and some cats, these animals could fend for themselves for a few days. They agree that a trip for all of them to Magpie Crossing would be a good thing.

The next day the set out. He can see they children have loaded up anything of value from the home to try to sell in Magpie Crossing. If he asks, Brom is told they need to sell things to see if they can buy food and livestock.
----------------------------------
Tishe walks back. It’s a bit sad. As she goes, she sees some of the devastation caused by recent events at few farms and homesteads along the way. At one she finds a few human and half-elven bodies, as well as some animal carcases. She tries not to think about who killed whom. A places seem to have been hastily abandoned. She visits one farm where the inhabitants seem to have survived, and they thank Ffloy that they had planned well enough to fortify their homestead which protected their family and livestock from the bloodweed and the ravages of the infected creatures. They invite her in for a visit, and are quite impressed to learn she is one of the Keepers! They inform her that what happened is indeed tragic, but Ffloy teaches that tragedy often presents opportunity, and they are confident their family will come through all this better than the were before.

At another place, she encounters a couple of men in leather armor. They seem to be rummaging through the place, packing valuables on a couple of mules. As she approaches, notice the plain looking woman in the her dusty clothes. They draw their swords, “Well little thing, you best be on her way if you knows what’s good for ya!” The other says, “No hold on there, mebe she gots some things. Look, she gots one o’ them fancy pins. Not sure where you found that, but we’’ll be taking that if you please. An’ empty out yer pockets while yer at it! Be quick about it, lest we change our minds an’ decide to keep you for as well.”

They both laugh.
------------------------------------
Velarin again scans the crater for magic, but still finds nothing more that what Tishe already recovered. It’s a few hours’ walk to Magpie Crossing, and he offers Royston a teleport there. Royston is relatively silent on the matter, so the DM assume Royston will go with the mage and they both arrive in town.

In Magpie Crossing, there is a good deal of activity. There is discussion of fortifications for the town, and the taxes needed for such. There is angst and frustration over recent immigration from the surrounding countryside - clearly this is impacting the community’s resources. It’s also causing a divide between those that say they need to help their neighbors and those that say those folks made their choice when they decided to live in the countryside. They mayor has had to step away to meet with the Pitchfork Council, and tensions are rising in town.

Edson asks for a list of those who died in the conflict. He’s told the mayor’s people are probably working on this. The rogue looks to pitch in where he can, and there are plenty of opportunities for that. There is building going on with some new residences being planned and built. There are refugees camped out along the rivers and in open spots. There are some families that want to return to their homes in the countryside, but are too fearful of what they may find there. And the local orphanage is bursting at the seams with a recent influx of children.

Brom is well aware of what they kids are doing with the wagon full of stuff. His plan was to take care of the kids and get them a good start, but that didn't go as planned. So Brom has a different plan. He wanted to give the kids help, but he could see their pride may prevent them from plainly accepting his generosity. In the end Brom settles on an idea.

Moving out in front of the cart he says. "How much you want for the whole lot of yer stuff?" He says to the kids before they leave. "I'm serious." He says. "How much fer the whole lot? It'd take too long ta sell the stuff. With Magpie rebuilding from the bloodweed, ya might not even find someone ta buy it all. So, I'm gonna save ya some time. How much?" Brom was half-serious about the time it would take to sell everything in Magpie. “I expect a fair price, but don’t low ball it cause of who I am. A fair price for the lot of goods.”

After Brom and the kids settle on a price, Brom retrieves a coin pouch from his pack and gives the kids the agreed to price. With that done, Brom tells the kids to unload the cart. “Gonna need an empty cart ta bring back the goods. You can keep these things until I need them.” After the cart is unloaded, they can now head out.

V surveys the unpleasant situation in magpie crossing, that has a chance of becoming much more unpleasant. He had been looking forward to servants, a bath, a hot meal, and a comfy Elven environment, but that was no longer to be the case.

"See Royston. We are needed already. If you would be so kind as to accompany me, I think we have a little work to take care of yet. Can you take dragon form again?"

With fly still in effect, he moves toward a larger crowd of people near the center of town(with Royston accompanying?) and rises 15' in the air, and calls out loudly "Good people! Hear me please! We have returned, and the bloodweed is gone. Everything still living that was effected by it has returned to normal. Heroes from across the Wold all gathered to do battle with this threat, and end it. What has happened here has happened everywhere. There are children without families. Families without homes. And homes without families. We must work together to see to the safety and well being of all for now. As we speak, the Keepers of the Vale have spread out across the area, helping those that we can, and dealing with those that wish to profit on the misfortunes of others. We will do all we can to quicken the healing of our lands, but we will need all of your help. Until the mayor returns with word from the pitchfork council, everyone needs to work together. I will start by providing food and housing for as many refugees as I possibly can, taking much of the burden of that from your shoulders." (If Royston said he could do the Dragon thing again, V points to Royston and says the following about him. If not, skip it). "This is Royston our newest companion, he looks to help as well. Royston, perhaps you could take a far ranging look around the area, and see if it seems safe for these good people that live in the country to start returning to their homes and seeing what can be salvaged while I see to their current needs?

V will then fly to the center of the refugee area, and summon as many of the refugees over to his area that he can, or that there are, and then cast Mage's Magnificent Mansion to create a massive mansion for 180 people, and start ushering refugees inside, assuring them that it is absolutely safe. Emrys feels very uncomfortable with so many people standing around him ... looking for answers. Public speaking isn't really his forte, especially when surrounded with desperate and scared town folk. His cold and direct manner of speech works well with his coven, but these simple folk require a softer touch. As soon as he figures out the right words to say and in the right way to say them ... the loud mouth Velarin swoops in and steals his thunder.

"Very well!" He turns to Angus and gives him a come hither look. As soon as he arrives, he listens to his report and decides what next they must do.

Sir Royston is happy to accompany Velarin, and gives a deep bow to the gathered townsfolk. "Sir Royston Scalesworth, the fourth of his line, Goldsword of Ffloy, Baronet Extraordinaire of Fargunia, at your service." He holds up both hands in a calming fashion. "Please, good folk of Magpie Crossing, allow us to help. Your recent influx of refugees has undoubtedly taxed your infrastructure and public services. We would be happy to help ease the burden. I will go now to survey the countryside and assist with heavy lifting."

Sir Royston transforms into Dragon-Royston and takes to the skies.

Brom suggest to the children now in his charge that he will purchase the goods they have, and ask that they store these things for him. He says that where they’re going they’ll need an empty cart. The boys Adney and Cal discuss this with the older girl Sessa. The younger girl and boy, Aggie and Tassen watch. Eventually, Sessa says confidently, “We think 50 gold is a fair price.” Brom can see that while some of the things have little value, there is are some manufactured goods and weapons, including a crossbow, that would readily sell. His practiced eye suggests the value is at least 100 gold. He pays them - what amount?

Once that is done, they unload the things, but Brom can see they are not being put back where they came from in the house. Rather, they are carefully placed in a secure area in the house and bundled together. They they being the several hour ride with the wagon to Magpie Crossing.
----------------------------------------
Tishe burns the bodies she finds and helps the family with some mending chores. They are very grateful, and offer her 5 silver for her help.

As she is approached by two brigands, they quickly find she is not the meek little woman she appears! She casts Glitterdust on them both. ”Gaaaa! I can’t see nuthin!” “Me either! This is all your fault Rasten. You never said she was a wizard!” “How was I supposed to know.”

The now glowing men blindly hold their swords out in front of themselves as they slowly back toward the house. Then the one called Rasten trips and falls on his butt, though he manages to keep his sword pointed in Tishe’s general direction. ”Argh. Help me up Grep! Look lady, we don’t want no trouble. Once we kin see again, we’ll jus be on our way all peaceful like. An you kin even keep the stuff if you want.”
----------------------------------------
Barratore swings by Witchspawn. As the horned minotaur descends and begins to reform from his misty state, he can see a number of folk on the street. Several begin casting spells. Near a few, a glowing spectral hand appears in the air above them. He needs to make a DC 15 Will save or consider one of them to be a trusted friend and ally.

As he takes form with a chest tucked under his arm, they all back up and some begin to run. There is a call for the guard. A few hold their ground and some brandish wands in his direction, and one replies, ”We are the guard you dolt! If it starts to cast spells take it out!” He turns to Barratore, ”State your business and do not draw any weapons!” Another says, ”Wait, I think I know this one.” There is a great deal of tension in the air.
-----------------------------------------
Velarin asks Royston if he can take dragon form again, and then addresses the people there. The elf tells the crowd the heroes have returned, but there is great need and they all need to pull together.

Sir Royston steps forth and tells them that all is well because he is there. He delivers a long title and then assumes the form of a large gold dragon and there is a great deal of ooing and ahing.
As he wings off, someone say, ”What’s a Fargunia? I ain’t never heard a’ no Fargunia.” Another says as he watches the dragon go, ”I dunno, but I ain’t messing with nobody from Fargunia.”

As Royston flies out to move things in his enhanced dragon form, things don’t really go as planned. He does see groups of people laboring, but each time he descends to help they run away. No one here has seen a dragon in a long time. Eventually though, he returns to his usual form and though his appearance is still strange and intimidating, his help is accepted and appreciated. Even moreso when they learn he is with the Keepers of the Vale.

Emrys is met by Angus and is informed that of what is going on. Edson is ready to help where he can.

You all learn that there is much that needs to be done. There are physical needs to be met and there are resources aplenty, but somehow, though the bloodweed is gone, weeds of fear have grown into this community and are choking it’s ability to act. There are too many orphans in the small orphanage. Fearful homes could be opened up to these children. Fearful newcomers in town need food and supplies. Fearful townspeople need to know they can help without their resources being completely drained. There are refugees afraid to return home - they just need someone to go with them and to know the town will support them.

Mostly it seems people need a sense of peace and normalcy, someone to give assurances that things will work out. While there are plenty of ways for the heroes to help individually, this community seems to need some sort of healing and purpose more than anything else. They need to see the heroes pulling together the way this community needs to again pull together.

Tishe’ declines the money, only helping because she can, but doesn’t want the family to think they are but a charity case. Then she has an idea. “I may not take money for magical services”, she says, “it is a part of the pattern f a Spellweaver. However, if you would offer information instead, I am seeking a cleric of Ffloy to speak with about working out a contract.”

For the bandits, Rasten and Grep, Tishe’ finds herself at a loss. She can’t tie them up or get close enough for an Arcane Mark without pummeling them into unconscious with her quarter staff. While the sorceress isn’t worried about hurting her with her magical protections, it would reduce the shock effect of her spell. So, she tries an alternative. “That’s right. You leave here with no loot and think twice about trying to rob anyone again. I’m giving your names to the Pitchfork Council and Keepers of the Vale, so if you get caught again...”

She waits, hands on hips, until the Glitterdust wears off, and watches them move off before she confiscates all the bags they had to take to the Magpie Crossing ... well, whoever was in charge!

And then she continues on the way to town.

Sir Royston does his best to triage the situation and help where he is needed the most. Seeing the large number of orphans is especially concerning to him. When he has a moment, he asks the Keepers in the village for a moment of their time.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Keepers," Royston holds up one finger, "We have orphans in need of permanent care." Two fingers. "Refugees in need of a means of supporting themselves." Three fingers. "We have a treasure chest filled with, presumably, treasure. I suggest we use the recently acquired money to pay for tools, materials, and the labor of the recently arrived refugees. They will build an orphanage at a site chosen by the town. The orphans will have a place to live, the refugees will have money to support themselves, and the townsfolk will have their burdens significantly eased."

Brom looks over the goods. “Hmm...a fair price, indeed.” He says. “How ‘bout a hundred?” He says to the boys. “With the weapons and some other things I see, a hundred fer the lot seems more of a fair price.” He says. “What’ya say? Wouldn’t be right if I didn’t give ya what I thought was fair. Specially, when there’s such a big difference.”

On there way to Magpie Crossing, Brom walks next to the wagon. He keeps his sword on his back, but has his bow in hand He certainly hopes he doesn’t need to use it, but the seasoned warrior is well aware that after crisis the vultures come to prey on the weak. He looks back at the kids, well he thinks kids but they are not much younger than he. He was the age of the oldest when he set out not that long ago. Now, 18 pushing 19, Brom feels the experiences of his travels.

He keep thinking about the kids and the tragedy. He thinks that it’s probably fairly common throughout the farmsteads. Young kids having to start over with no parents or one parent. With no livestock and no crops to get them through the winter. When they arrived back at Magpie Crossing...Brom was going to need a horse.

He waits for the rest of the Keepers to return, or at least some form of governmental representative to institute some sort of long term plan for the care of the people.

"Seems a reasonable idea Royston. Although we should wait until the mayor and pitchfork council have had their say, and we will need to get their permission prior to implementing such a plan."

Emrys looks around for anything that needs his special touch. However, thoughts of his home Culverheart and Culverwood plagues him. Surely his father, the Wolds most powerful druid, was keeping things together. He feels he needs to go there as soon as he can get away.

Tishe stands before the blinded brigands. The sitting one gets to his feet and the blindness eventually wears off. The men are scared, but decide to push their luck again anyway. ”Hey, like I said little lady, we don’t want no trouble with you. We’ll jes take our things and be on our way.” As Tishe informs them again that they will not be taking their things, they decide that discretion is the better part of … well, living. ”Ok, ok, the stuff and animals is all yers. An no need to report us. We’ll be changin’ our way, yes mam. I thinks I wanna take up faming, how ‘bout you Grep?” “Farmin? You craz….oh yeaaaah. Farmin. Sure, we’ll be farmers from here on out. You bet. We’ll be seein’ you at our farm some time then.” The two cautiously back away from the scowling, short woman in her dun colored clothing.

They’d collected a fair amount of things of value - likely from more than one place. She leads the animals back to Magpie Crossing, arriving there in a few hours.
---------------------------------
Brom strikes a deal with the kids at the homestead, and they take the 100 gold respectfully. Clearly, this is a princely sum in their eyes. Adney gives each a few coins for themselves and holds the rest. Eventually, they reach Magpie Crossing.
---------------------------------
Barratore resists the urge to lay into the scared spellcasters in Witchspawn. As he takes form and speaks up, he asks about what has happened. ”Oh, it’s you - thank the gods! You had us scared there. We’re doing OK. As the bloodweed appeared and began to infect people, Dulcet organized the bloodwtiches and healers to combat the infection. We did pretty well for ourselves, but no one’s sure how all this started, so we’re ready for anything now. We’re sure sorry we thought you were an enemy, but we don’t get too many big, horned figures coalescing out of mist.”

Barratore then turns back to mist and heads to Merrydale. He assumes his corporal form again behind a building there and soon learns that this town is tense, but recovering. He is greeted by humans and halflings, and soon Hned Cooper joins them. He’s a local mayor of sorts. The Druidess Simmay Swanfeathers was able to organize the druids in the area to combat the bloodweed and its effects, but there were still many lives lost, both humanoid and animal. Though the bloodweed is gone, they’re still learning of losses of those living in the wooded areas to the south. Even now, they have rangers and woodsmen deployed to assess these effects, so each day brings both good and bad news.

Eventually, Barratore will travel to Magpie Crossing where he will join the rest of the party.
----------------------------------
Velarin’s creation of a Magnificent Mansion becomes quite popular, and soon becomes a problem as a long line forms to get in. There is some frustration by those that cannot get in.

Royston suggests building a new orphanage. Velarin suggests that the Mayor and the Pitchfork Council be consulted on this first. But you learn that the Pitchfork Council is thought to be in Jarlswolf right now.

Emrys encourages his followers to continue their efforts. While quite pleased, he does note that Emrys’ abilities exceed his own and the town is in sore need of all a bloodwitch has to offer.

Tishe shows up in town with a couple of mules laden with goods. Barratore soon arrives, and Brom arrives the following day, rolling into town with an empty wagon and five kids.

The refugees are put to work, the townsfolk can sell them goods rather than donate them, and the orphans gain a home. Winners all around! Then, when the orphanage is built, the refugees can use their funds to move back to their homes after some local doers-of-good have cleared the countryside of bandits and savage beasts. The orphans can be trained as apprentices to local craftsmen, and their allowance can in turn support the orphanage. I would suggest we get a hold of this Pitchfork Council right smart so they can see the wisdom of capital investment!", said the paladin of the god of merchants.

To the Keepers, the Spellweaver agrees with Edson who is quietly going about the business of helping where’re needed. To the other discussion, Tishe’ looks dubiously at the dragon disciple. “Royston, what you do with your share of the treasure is up to you, but don’t try to force your own beliefs on the rest of us. Sieur Barratorre is right. And we are not the leaders of Magpie Crossing or Cinnamon Valley. I think we need to find out what THEY think the situation is and where THEY think they need help. With the group finally together, talk continues as to the best way to help out the folks in Magpie Crossing and beyond. The Keepers are asked for help and advice here and there, and it’s clear they are revered figures. This also places some expectations on them and they find they need to set limits as they interact with folk. The Pitchfork Council are not here, and while there are authority figures in town, many turn to the Keepers.

Tishe asks for the Captain of the Guard in town and informs him of the brigands she encountered and where. ”Rasten and Grep eh? I’ve heard of Rasten, but this Grep is new to me. If they’re nearby, they’ll eventually come to Magpie Crossing - we’ll keep an eye out for them. Thanks for your help. I imagine they got more than they bargained for when they met one of the Keepers.”

Velarin finds that most of the conflicts arising with his Magnificent Mansion is that it’s more of a sightseeing visit for most folks that meeting actual needs of food and housing. Sure it provides very fancy and wonderful food, as well as housing - but it’s also really, really cool!

Brom checks into available supplies. Right now, everything seems to be in demand and costs are about 50% above normal for the livestock and wagon he wants. What does he do with the kids, who are pretty excited to be here and in the presence of the Keepers!

Eventually, the chest that Barratore has been carrying is opened. While it appears to be a normal chest, it clearly is not. It is about 3’ wide, 2’ deep, and 2 ‘ tall. It weighs 35 pounds. But it holds much more (reskinned type III Bag of Holding.) Within are gold and gems worth 300,000 GP. Also in the chest is a tiny replica of the larger chest just a few inches high. Within it are seven rings made of steelgrass!

The Spellweaver can cast Detect Magic at will as a spell-like ability, and does so. “That, and a strong skill in Spellcraft can identify magic items without even needing an Identify spell”, she tells herself, and carefully looks over each ring and crystal.

The Spellweaver doesn’t want to sell everything at the Catacombs. “If there is something someone wants, we should let that happen and not eat the 50% resale cost”, she reasons.

And then, having someone at Magpie Crossing is a good idea, and Velarin has good cause to be that person. “We do need, hovere, a quick way to contact everyone in case we find a situation that needs all of us.”

As for the rings.. they looked nice. He'd wait to see what Tishe says they are before acting.

Discussion continues about how to best help the local populace, and there seems to be some agreement in this.

Emrys looks at the magical chest and its tiny replica. It reminds him of a spell called Secret Chest, and even though the larger chest holds more than it should, he thinks the pair may also work as a material component for that spell.

Tishe looks at the magical gems and the rings. She is able to determine that the magical crystal shards are four Gems of Brightness, all fully charged. The rings, well the rings are something else. She will find that each is a Ring of Spell Storing, capable of storing up to 5 levels of spells. But each steelgrass ring is empty. Beneath the rings, you see a piece of rough paper - likely made from a broad piece of grass. It contains one word, “Mahyawu.” You recall that this was the name of the small Manfri you met on the Sargrass.

Since it seems inevitable that someone might say his name, someone does. And with a slight “POP,” Mahyawu now stands before you all, shorter than a gnome, with dark skin, white hair and grey eyes. His outfit is made from a combination of hide, grass, beads and feathers. He still wears the over-large headdres made of woven grass and feathers. As he arrives, he sees the person holding the parchment and snatches it from their hand before they know what happened. The he speaks to all of you.

”Well, well. You are all indeed great heroes, but it has come to my attention that there are still some outstanding matters for you. The Gods wanted me to make sure you knew you knew your efforts were appreciated. First, your heroic efforts deserve some recognition, so you are hereby empowered by the Gods!” He pulls out a feather from his headdress, and it begins to smoke. He waves the smoke onto all of you, and you do indeed feel empowered.

(Everyone is brought to 890,000 XP - enough to be 16th level! Also, each of you get two hero points. This epic, Woldwide adventure leveled everyone up, and the XP levels in your group are very different. This will put everyone at the same point.)

”There. That’s better. I also thought you might have some questions.”

“I see you found my rings! Good. I’ll answer that question even before it’s asked. These will let you store spells in them, but the Gods wanted to get you started off right with these. So, when you first put it on, you may ask the Gods for 5 levels of spells to be placed in them - any you want. But after that, it will be up to you to refill them as the spells are used.”
(Choose up to 5 levels of spells of any kind, but no early entry bard, paladin or ranger spells - like choosing a paladin spell that has a higher level cleric equivalent.)

Straightening he looks at the others, "Do we have any questions about anything? The Wold is safe, The Sar thing is wherever the plains went to be or do whatever that might be." Barratore stops and scratches his chin,
"I guess i do have a couple. Where did the Sargrass go and what was the outcome of the immortal thing of three things or whatever that was at the end?"

Barratore intends to go to Jarlwolf. There is a WLA outpost there and it is as good as any place to walk to to be out and seen. He will need to think on the Ring for a bit. Maybe the others could provide an idea or two. It was a powerful gift and he also would need to go to the Catacombs to make full use of it

After helping them get their things, he treats them to a good hot meal and a set of new clothes for all of them. Afterwards he takes them back to the manor. He wants to check in and see what's up before taking them home.

Back at the manor, he learns of the money, the gems and the rings. He takes the ring and puts in his haversack. The money he leaves for now, and he doesn't really care about the gems.

After spending time at the manor, he sets the kids up in a room for the night before heading out with them in the morning.

The small woman tucks away a stray brown lock of hair and focuses her attention on the Manfri. “What is the status of the Sarr and the land? I promised to defend the Sargrass as I would defend myself, “Talki fresal, dondit likki”, and though I had died in what I thought was the final chapter of the Sargrass, it seems it was only but another chapter of the renewal of the land.”

Tishe’ realizes she is babbling and stops to collect her thoughts.

“Does the land need me to return and be a protector as I once was?”

In the Keepers’ manor, the heroes tower above the diminutive form of the Manfri in their midst, and his demeanor is unassuming and congenial. Even so, there is a sense that Mahyawu may be the most powerful person in the room.

Sir Royston give him a blessing in draconic.

Barratore notes that the Gods themselves are taking notice, and he asks, ”Where did the Sargrass go and what was the outcome of the immortal thing of three things or whatever that was at the end?"

Edson agrees with the minotaur, and asks if there were any other heroes there that may have died in the battle with the Sarr.

Brom saw to the needs of the children now in his charge, which was a very exciting time for them. They are even more excited as Brom sees them peeking around the corner, watching this exchange with Mahyawu. Brom pockets the ring.

Tishe has some questions about what happened.

Velarin has brings up the treasure.

In response to Sir Royston, Mahyawu says, ”Oh, now draconic is a tongue I have not heard in a long time. But thank you for your kind words.

“You asked about the Sargrass and the Sarr. The Sarr was an immortal power that ruled over the Sargrass. You see, when the Sargrass was about ta be destroyed many years ago, it was snatched from this place by the Gods, Maab mostly, and placed in the Twilight Vales for safekeeping. But, something, we’re not sure what yet though I have my suspicions, entered the Sargass in that place and allowed that nasty bloodweed to invade. And it spread, ooo did it spread, even into the Crystal Mountians in the middle of the Sargrass. I’m not even sure how the bloodweed got into that crystal, but it did. An somehow that triggered an explosion so great it was able to cross the planar boundry back to the Wold, and these pieces seeded bloodweed here - causing great problems for your people I am told.

“The Sarr somehow got infected too! But the collective work of all the heroes of the Wold was able to weaken it enough that the parts of the Sarr were able to break free - both from each other and from the effects of the bloodweed. Good work! Now they are immortal powers of the Sargrass. It’s kinda like bein a god, but only in one place, you see. You asked if any one died. One or two I think. That’s not my problem to fix tho.

“Now it seems that the time had come for the Sargrass to be returned to the Wold. And I say it was past time for that, but nobody was askin me. Will it stay? Hard to say what Maab will do from day to day, but I don’t think it’ll be goin anywhere too soon. An if it does, I’m gonna have words for the Fey Queen, an not all of them nice ones."

At some point in the conversation, Tishe turns to the little man and asks, “Does the land need me to return and be a protector as I once was?” Mahyawu seems genuinely touched by the question and reaches up to take her hand as he responds. “Oh child, the Sargrass always needs you if that is where your heart calls you to be. But it will be fine without you too. The real question that you need to answer for yourself is ‘Do you need the Sargrass? Does it call to you girl? Do you need the open planes and the tall grass and the Crystal Mountians?’” In a flash, he seems to make and place a woven steelgrass bracelet on her small wrist. She never would have thought anyone could turn grass into steelgrass so quickly.

“Anythin else you need from me? Oh, there is one more thing - don’t wait too long to ask for a spell to fill those rings. The Gods are not at your beck and call, an may not answer if you wait too long to ask.”

Treasure is discussed. Some of the heroes express interest in a few things, and Brom and Barratore ask the others to leave their share in their rooms.

Sir Royston leaves the manor and seeks out a member of the Pitchfork Council. He is new to town, and looks slightly demonic. He is initially challenged by the guard, but once they learn he is with the Keepers, they stand down but remain wary. He is able to find an number of important folk in town, but soon finds the Town Mayor Lord Hmitri is the local member of the Pitchfork Council, and he is meeting with them. They think in Jarlswolf, but it maybe elsewhere. He is expected back in a few days.

Tishe is touched by the Mahyawu’s words, and leaves the others to think for a bit. As she walks along the stream behind the Manor, her thoughts turn to the steelgrass ring. She notices it and her new bracelet are a perfect match. As she walks, she decides she want’s Breath of Life for a spell to fill the ring.

A few moments later, a thin, pale elf shows suddenly appears by her side, startling her! She instinctively steps back 5 feet. He is dressed in black robes and there is a musty, unpleasant smell about him. He looks her over for a moment with a slight sneer. ”Oh. You are my task? Humph, you really don’t look like much, do you? Here, give me your hand girl so I can fulfill my duty with that little ring of yours. Be quick child! I am rather busy at the moment and apparently there is another here that requires the same spell placed in his ring.” He reaches into his pocket as he speaks.

Velarin cleans up the minotaur a bit, and informs folks that he can magically keep in touch with others as needed. Then he heads for the Catacombs, and as he goes he thinks about the spell he would have in his ring.

Barratore heads out and Edson decides to go with him.

Brom secures some goods and loads the wagon he came in on. He gathers up the kids and also heads out, but in a different direction. The kids seem a bit disappointed to leave so soon, but are ready to go. ”Hey, who was that little man with the feathers on his head? He was funny.”

As the diminutive Manfri prepares to leave, Emrys asks about his father and the Culverwood. Mahyawu answers, “I do not know this esteemed Myrridan, but even though he be a druid, if he is your father then I am sure he is a good person. As for the Culverwood, I have heard mention of it but I have never been there myself.”

With that, Mahyawu disappears.

Tishe offers her ring to the pale elf. ”Ugh. You don’t need to take it off. Very well” He takes the ring and casts a spell. Then he wordlessly give her the ring back, and concentrates for a moment, turning in the direction of the Manor. He then casts a spell and vanishes.

Outside the Manor, Velarin is surprised the have a pale elf in black robes appear suddenly by his side. He rolls a large, black pearl around the palm of his hand as he says “Here now, Give me that ring of ring of yours - I have an obligation to meet.” If Valarin balks, he replies ”I really don’t have time for this.” Then he inexplicably winces, and in a strained voice, he says, "I need to cast Breath of Life into that stupid ring of yours. If you do not wish me to do so, say the word so I may be released from this menial task..” If allowed, he will then cast a spell on Velarin’s ring and vanish with a sneer.

Baratore heads out with Edson by his side. As he goes, he sees a centaur walking toward them. He carries a bow and a longsword, and he wears a holy symbol of Domi. ”Greetings Barratore, and the blessings of Imod be upon you. It seems the Gods have taken notice of you. I have been sent to grant you a blessing in the form of casting spells into a ring you possess. If you will be so kind as to present your ring…” Assuming he does, the centaur will cast a couple of spells. ”There, I have added Freedom of Movement and Bless Weapon to your ring, and you may use them at your leisure. Simply concentrate on the effect and it will happen. Now, if I may ask, what is it that bids my God to send me on this errand - what have you done that makes you highly favored among the Gods? And if you would prefer not to answer, I will leave you alone and be on my way.”

Brom travels with the children. As he leaves town, a very attractive woman stands waiting by the side of the road. She wears tight fitting clothes, cut just a bit lower that you might expect for travel. She carries a staff shod with mithral. She smiles as the wagon approaches. ”Are you Brom? Greetings Brom, I am pleased to meet you. May I?” She tries to climb aboard the wagon, and assuming she is allowed to do so, she snugly sits by the brawny barbarian. ”Oooo. I and Mesaelia, and I am here to add a spell to your ring.” She slowly runs her hand down his arm to his ring. Then she casts a spell, but her hand remains on Brom’s as she says, ”There, now you can teleport anytime you want. And, make note, you will be able to bring 5 others with you.” The kids simply stare at this newcomer. She looks at them and then at Brom. ”Oh, hi kids. Say, where are we going?”

Tishe’ thanks the drow after he disappears, and sits in the grass by the stream. Her hands idly weaving small ornaments while her mind is bursting.

A new group of heroes in town... her memory immediately goes to faces, abilities, and personalities. Brom, Barratorre, and Edson are all men of action. They may be Human, Minotaur, and Elf, but they all have a surprising fraternity of seeking physical challenges and relishing life. Velarin was... complicated; a careful planner and good strategist, also commanded a wide vareity of offensive spells, though fire was a favorite of the tall Elf. Emrys was an enigma, a Bloodwitch with a past family and life that still seems to haunt his footsteps; a fragile body housing some truly impressive magic. And the new Royston; the dragon disciple who was as much a fighter as a mage and as much dragon as human; not really belonging anywhere yet.

But none know of Skalipy. Certainly not like Tishe’ knows the manipulative, sadistic, and twisted monster who seeks to create a desert and call it ‘peace’. No. She is needed here now.

She stands and returns to the Manor with a new feeling of purpose; wholly committed to Defending this Vale.

Sir Royston is somewhat concerned to learn that the local mayor is currently away from the village. He asks anyone available, "Do you have a reeve? An undermayor? A judge? Someone who is present, here and now, to help lead this village? Surely the business of the village does not come to a stand-still every time he leaves." If he can find anyone in authority, he asks them the same questions he meant for the mayor.

Brom is welcoming to the attractive woman Mesaelia. As he greets and thanks her, he stumbles over his words a bit. She seems eminently satisfied with this. She hooks her arm in his as they go toward the farm. This is just incredibly pleasant for Brom. He learns that she is from a place called Plateau City, and because of some commitments she made she needed to come here to cast the spell she did. She seems to be in no hurry, and will spend a few days with Brom, helping the children and him with the place. (And since the Wold is a G Rated place, we’ll gloss over some details.) She casts a number of spells and summons creatures here and there - all good and reputable creatures that help with repairs and work around the place.
----------------------------------

There is a good deal of activity in town, and much good will toward the Keepers for their presence, and their willingness to go out into the community to help where they may.

Sir Royston asks for someone in authority, and is directed to Brother Daevon, a Half-Orc cleric of Alemi. He asks about the refugees, known threats in the countryside, and the cost of farm acreage. Brother Daevon tells him there is much that can be done to help the refugees, mostly escorting them back to their farms after the fearful experiences they’ve had in recent days. Some require healing, some could be helped by modest amounts of food and perhaps some silver. But mostly, they need hope - and as Royston engages them, they begin to look hopefully to him - even moreso as they learn he is associate with he Keepers in the Manor. Brother Daevon does not think many threats still exist beyond town, but he’s not sure. Nor is he sure what the price of farmland is these days. (Can find farmland is fairly priced - let me know when you figure out what the rules say about such things.)
----------------------

Velarin accepts the strange elf as he realizes why he is there. The pale elf in is black robes intones a spell and then gives a derisive snort he vanishes from sight. Velarin prepares to see to things in town before settling down to write some scrolls. He is sure the mayor, or any other members of the Pitchfork Council, will contact those at the Manor should they arrive in town.

Tishe sits by the stream and idly weaves some grasses, as she ponders her past. A name comes to mind - Skalipy! And that dreadful red dragon he used to travel with. Now, what was his name? She returns to the Manor.

Emrys stands in the Manor as he watches the Manfi leave. He states aloud that he would like Permanancy placed in the ring. Nothing happens. But about 30 minutes later, there is a great deal of screaming from outside. Emrys, Velarin and Tishe rush to the door, and find that a great purple and red carriage sits outside, drawn by four eerie horse-like creature with inky black skin. Fire spurts from their hair and nostrils, and its hooves spray sparks as they paw the ground! The door to the carriage swings open, and out steps a strange creature. He is nicely dressed in purple and crimson clothing, fairly dripping with jewels. His skin is a bright red, and two great horns sprout from his forehead. He swishes a tail as he looks toward the door of the manor, and as some of you prepare to cast spells he waves dismissively. With a broad smile he asks, ”Now, I’m not here for trouble. Which one of you is Emrys? I have come a long way. You know, it always smells so good up here.” As members of the guard arrive, he casts a spell and they stop on their tracks, seemingly puzzled they cannot advance. (DC 25 Will save to approach this entity.) The guards pull out crossbows, and look questioningly at the Keepers at the door to the Manor.

You’re not sure what this will do to your reputation in town, but it’s certainly a spectacle!

Barratore is a bit taken aback at the centaur, but tries to recover. He had been learning, albeit slowly over his adventures that all things he had been taught as a child and the stories he had grown up with, were not necessarily true. He hands the ring to the Centaur and then as requested, Barratore tells him of the Bloodweed infestation. How it hurtled to the ground from above. That he and his family, The Defenders of the Vale, had traveled to the Sargrass and did battle with a druidic ghost, laying the soul to rest. Barratore tells of the great fight with all of the other Woldian heroes against what the Sar had become and Barratore very much tells of the great Dragon that the group vanquished. His story concluded, Barratore thanks the centaur again

Barratore shrugs, "Not sure Edson. Maybe the improved version. I hear it allows you to remain invisible after attacking. How are you at using scrolls? I was hoping that if i purchased the scrolls for the spells, that you could help keep my ring loaded, so to speak."

The pair continue towards Jarlwolf

OOC:

Paizo actually published rules regarding the price of real estate!

http://www.d20pfsrd.com/gamemastering/other-rules/downtime/

These rules allow characters to build rooms or change land to suit a purpose. It is modular, and allows you to build just about anything you want by putting pieces together like a Lego set.

A farm is composed of the following:
1 Animal Pen
1 Bedroom
1 Farmland
1 Garden
1 Kitchen
1 Lavatory
1 Sitting Room

It has a total price tag of 2,090 gold pieces. The price of 'farmland' by itself is 600gp. The 'farmland' consists of a "large swath of fertile land" that is 100x100 5-foot-squares in size. This is equivalent to 250,000 square feet, or 5.74 acres.

Sir Royston is a paladin of Ffloy, god of merchants. We have numerous refugees in town. Refugees who ran perfectly good farms until they were overrun by bloodweed and monsters.

I was thinking of having my character approach some refugees and offer them a deal. I purchase their farms for fair market value (heroes do not engage in economic exploitation!). The refugees get gold to survive while their livelihood is temporarily unavailable. We clear their farms of hazards. In exchange, the farmers become tenant farmers, pledging to give me 10% of the value of their harvest for so long as they work the land.

Sir Royston will use the yearly income to establish a charitable fund for the town.

Brom enjoys the few days he spends with Mesaelia. Brom tells her his tales and listens to her stories of her home, Plateau City. Once it's her time to leave, Brom asks if he can visit her someday.

He fixes up the farm, with Mesaelia help, and also gives the older boys a few lessons in weapons so that they can defend themselves and their brothers and sisters. He also asks about the other farms in the area.

After Mesaelia leaves and the farm is fixed up, Brom bids the kids goodbye. He tells them he will check up on them from time to time. Then he's off.

Brom moves throughout the farmsteads checking up on them and helping where he can. He also makes note of the things they need most. His plan is to gather supplies and come back with essential goods and supplies.

Barratore tells this centaur the tale of the Keepers’ journey to the Sargrass and the battle with a ghost, and later with a dragon and the Sarr. ”Ahh, that would explain why you have found favor with the Gods. Goodly and mighty deed you have done. Imod’s blessings upon you both. Farewell.” He walks back into the woods and disappears from sight.

The pair takes the better part of a day to travel to Jarlswolf, discussing spells and scrolls - such things as mighty minotaurs and crafty rogues are wont to discuss. Upon reaching Jarlswolf in the evening, they are soon brought to the members of the Pitchfork Council there. All are there - the affable Lord Hmitri, the crone Dulcet, the grandmotherly Simmay Swanfeathers, and the dour Thelonius Bedstraw.

”Ah, two of the Keepers of the Vale. Good. But where are the rest of you? And what can you tell us of how the bloodweed was removed from our lands? For a time, I feared we have have to adjust to infested croplands and crazed animals. Or would you prefer to wait until you are all together?”
----------------------------
Emrys pushes through the Repulsion spell, identifying himself to this devilishly handsome fellow. Tishe recognizes the pattern in the weave here, and makes it clear that he best be moving along shortly. The Guards look to the heroes for guidance. The nightmarish horses paw the ground defiantly, and there is a faint smell of brimstone in the air.

”Ah, ha ha ha. Of course you’re Emrys. I’d recognize a bloodwitch anywhere. And fear not little lady, I shall not tarry.” He smiles broadly as he steps forward and wastes no time casting Permanancy into Emrys’ ring. He runs his hand along one large horn, almost as if brushing back a lock of hair. ”See, that wasn’t so bad. You know, I’m really not a bad fellow once you get to know me. Come, I can take you both back with me if you wish. I assure you that you’ll have the time of you lives.” You notice his teeth are pointed. He then moves back to the grand carriage, and gestures toward an open door. Assuming no one climbs aboard, he enters the carriage and says, ”No? Pity. You’re unlikely to get another offer like this.” And then, without a word, the horses and carriage turn and run out of town, leaving a trail of smoke and embers in their wake.

The guard and the townsfolk look at Emrys, Tishe and Velarin with a look of awe as they wordlessly draw back from the Manor.

As Tishe escorts folk back to their farms, she meets with little resistance. There are some wolves to chase off from time to time, and a rogue or two to “discourage” but nothing she cannot handle. She’s a bit puzzled when they thank her for not buying their farm.
------------------------------------
Brom has a lovely time with the good Mesaelia, and they both seem to enjoy setting things to rights at the farm. She is able to spot some animals in the distance, and soon the place is really beginning to look like a farm again. The kids are thankful for the supplies and seem to have a renewed sense of hope.

Brom spends a few days moving from farmstead to farmstead in the countryside, and Mesaelia stays with him for a time. She is a great help, and seems to bring laughter and joy to those she visits. Eventually, Mesaelia says she must return to Plateau City, and that Brom is always welcome there. He simply needs to seek out the Slipper Inn and ask for her - they will know how to contact her. She give him a long kiss. As a token, she leaves him with a handkerchief made of red silk. And then she casts a spell and is gone.
------------------------------
Sir Royston begins to address some of the refugees in town. He explains that he seeks to purchase the farms the refugees have left, clear the land of threats, and then let them return as tenant farmers in exchange for 10% or their proceeds for as long as they are on the land.

This is met with a mixed reaction. Two are a bit confused but agree to his terms. A few are eager to sell, but have no intention of returning and instead want to live in Magpie Crossing. Most politely decline and ask why the sale of their land is the price of his help? They tell him they will ask the Keepers for help, as their help doesn’t seem to come with a price.

Emrys was almost tempted to go with the horned fellow. He was particularly impressed with his mode of transportation. He looks down at his steelgrass ring ... it still feels warm. He turns back to Tishe with a uncharacteristically wily grin on his face, he says, "Fortune favors the bold!"

He looks back to see if he can still see his infernal carriage in the distance. "Odd, he never answered my question ... who was he?" He searches his mind for anyone fitting his description from his extensive knowledge of lore involving legends and the planes. (Knowledge [History]: 26, Knowledge [Planes]: 28.)

A little later Emrys is struck with a vision. It appears he is looking through many eyes ... speeding through and around the dense and dark areas of Culverwood. Quickly racing over and through the trees and undergrowth ... ever searching for what ... such hunger. Then it weaves through a tunnel, deep into Underwold ... down among the deepest roots of the forest ... a ROAR! ... you don't know how, but you know it sees you too!

The vision is over and now he understands. Daemon saw a glimpse of it too and looks concerned. Emrys then announces to anyone there at the manor house that he and Daemon is going to take a quick trip to Culverheart to see if he can find check on his father and their home (Culverheart is in Culverwood, next door to the Valley. Not that far away for someone who can Windwalk.).

What he doesn't tell them is that he will be stopping along the way. The battleground where they fought so many beasts and purple worms (where the meteor crystal had landed). He suddenly has plans for all that dead and rotting meat in the fields where they fought. "Come Daemon, we won't be gone long." He casts Windwalk on them both and off they go speeding through the air at breakneck speeds.

Oddly, he eagerly hopes to see all the rotting carcasses where they fell. So much meat shouldn't go to waste.

Once back in Magpie, he goes to many of the merchants and discusses with them what supplies he needs and the why he wants it.

After a quick stop at the Bath, Brom is back at the house. He grabs a drink, in his favorite oversized mug, and sits down in his chair. He thinks about the past weeks and pulls out the handkerchief Mesaelia gave. He stares at it with a smile, very much like the smile he gets while in battle, occasionally lifting the handkerchief to smell it remember woman who gave it to him.

He also catches up on the news from any of the other Keepers that happen to be at the house.

The next day, he heads out early and collects the things he needs, including a wagon and horse which if none are for sale he will offer to rent from the owner and return, before heading out.

Emrys watches the horned, red skinned man leave in his strange carriage. He does not know this personage, but the man's appearance and that of his carriage makes Emrys think this creature comes from the infernal reaches of the lower planes. He would guess the man was a tiefling. He also realizes that the creature was here to do the bidding of the Gods, which begs the question: what did he get from the Gods that he was here in return. If he was not a person of importance, perhaps he is now? He’ll likely never know.

Emrys had an odd vision and decides to visit his father in the Culverwood. He seeks out the Archdruid, stopping along the way to gather some rotting meat. He will eventually find the man. He is well, and he is very glad to see his son. He asks about Daemon, looking at the creature with some concern. That’s a really big viper! He was very busy working with others to stabilize and protect the Culverwood, and it seems that even the Culverwood was succumbing to the bloodweed infestation!

He asks Emrys what he’s been up to. He also asks why he brought a bunch of rotting meat to the Culverwood, and could he please get rid of it. (It smells pretty bad!)
---------------------------------

In Jarlswolf, Barratore and Edson meet with the Pitchfork Council, who have many questions. The pair answer as best they can, relating what happened with the bloodweed, the crystal, the Sargrass and the battle. They seem pretty impressed to hear about a dragon, and interested that it seemed to have pulled together people from all over the Wold. At the mention of the rest of the Keepers, Edson explains they are doing what they can. Barratore asks the Council about the community’s needs and the Council’s plans. They explain that there are many needs, and they have marshaled what help they can to address them. But the biggest need seems to be a mix of trying to dispel fear, provide hope and ensure a return to normalcy.

Lord Hmitri says, “What this community needs is a sense that they know what to expect. The recent events were so chaotic, the people have been set off balance.”

Simmay chimes in, “That reminds me of a song I once heard from a bard in Merrydale:

What the people need
Is a way to make 'em smile
It ain't so hard to do if you know how
Gotta get a message
Get it on through.

“Let us return with you to Magpie Crossing to speak with the rest of your group.”

Wagons and horses are brought, and Barratore, Edson and the Pitchfork Council journey back to Magpie Crossing, stopping a number of time to help those they encounter and to remind folks that all is well.

---------------------------------
Velarin assures those in town there’s nothing to worry about, that the horned man was just a messenger from the Gods. The elf continues his work on his scrolls.

Brom returns to the Manor, and finds that he is not the only one that’s had a visitor. It seems these rings have had a number of incidental impacts on folks. He also feels very fortunate that his visit was much more pleasant than a meeting with a snotty elven necromancer or a demonic man in a carriage.

Brom finds that he can find a horse and wagon, but the cost is about 50% more than normal due to demand at this time.

Sir Royston is disappointed that his plan to set up a charitable enterprise funded through tenant farmers was not well received. But he learns that his efforts have inspired some in the town to take up his banner on this. He is approached by a number of proprietors in Magpie Crossing. They note that costs for some goods are up, and they propose that a portion of this windfall be put to good use. They ask Royston how these funds should be handled, but whom, and what the name of such a fund or effort should be?

Good work continues in town and the surrounding area. In a day or two, Barratore and Edson return with the Pitchfork Council and a few retainers and helpers. Lord Hmitri greets those at the Manor, “Ahh, there you all are. What news? And where is that fellow with the snake? who’s this?” he says of Royston, looking at the new guy with what seem to demonic golden eyes and be horns growing out of his head.

Emrys arrives to the battleground where all the dead carcasses still lay. The pit where the meteor had landed still fresh from impact ... it's the only thing that remains fresh ... the stench is horrible at this place.

Emrys does not approach the rotting corpses. He does not take any of the rotting flesh. He does nothing with it ... that would run counter to why he came here in the first place.

It turns its head to face Emrys and Daemon and it gives a bellowing roar. Emrys tries not to react to its moist, ripe breath ... the snake is less successful. The collosal Titan Centipede raises his head to its greatest height and peers down at the two.

"I know you care not for words ... I sensed you were hungry ... I only wished to meet you and offer you this gift." Emrys motions to all the dead littering the fields. "They are yours, if you wish."

The Titan Centipede doesn't hesitate and swiftly attacks the rotting corpses ... ripping, tearing and devouring them ravenously. He continues to feed until 16 minutes pass or nothing is left. He slowly fades away, returning to the deep, dark places of Culverwood.

"That went w-well," stutters Daemon, "I'm sstill alive!"

"Agreed ... it's best to make a good first impression. Now, let's continue on to Culverheart. I wish to talk to father. It's been too long." With that being said, they both turn into mist and continue their journey.

It bestows the rights of nobility on the holder while within the realm (trial by peers, right of petition, claims to hospitality, etc.) but does not confer any lands or pension.}

"I happened upon the Keepers during a pilgrimage, and together we gave what-for to that nasty Sargrass. As a templar of Ffloy, it is my holy obligation to help rebuild and advance civilization... something your village needs in spades! Please, consider me at your service."

When consulted by the local merchants, Sir Royston eagerly advises them to put the funds toward the construction of an orphanage. All of the children without homes and who cannot be placed with local farms need to be cared for and educated until they can find suitable apprenticeships to support themselves. He suggests "Magpie Crossing Beneficent Fund" as a suitable name. As for someone to lead the fund, he advises that they ask about the refugees for any mothers who have lost their children. They would have all the skills necessary to rear the orphans and administer the orphanage. :)

(Your DM misunderstood Emrys intent earlier.)

Emrys stands in the crater, overlooking the rotting meat. It was just what he wanted. He speaks with Daemon, and then summons a large centipede, certainly a colossal thing for a centipede. It is initially differential to Emrys, and then goes to town devouring the rotting worm carcass. Emrys speaks to the creature but is ignorred. Then he continues on to see his father.

He seeks out the Archdruid in the Culverwood.

---------------------------------
Brom is loading his wagons with goods as Sir Royston sets up the "Magpie Crossing Beneficent Fund" and sets plans to build a new orphanage! Then they both set out deliver goods in the surrounding area. This is met with much rejoicing. They return to town for another load about the time that Barratore and Edson roll into town with the Pitchfork Council. All are there but Emrys.

In light of Brom’s visitor, Velarin laments that he got stuck with a grouchy elf. He offers to call back Emrys to meet with the Council, and they think that would be a good idea.

Velarin introduces Sir Royston. Not to be outdone, Sir Royston introduces himself. Then he tells Lord Hmitri, the Mayor of Magpie Crossing, that his “village” is in need of rebuilding and civilization.

Lord Hmitri regards the knight, “Ffloy eh? Extrrodinare eh? You certainly are extraordinary - I’ll give you that! We may not be quite up to your standards of civilization Sir Royston, but we do alright. We are glad to have you here with us though. I hear you and Brom have been out delivering goods. My thanks for that! I also hear that you are collecting taxes in my town to build an orphanage in my town. Until you decide to be Mayor, I respectfully request that you respect the local authorities and run such things by me.”

The crone Dulcet smiles as she chimes in, ”The boy’s heart’s in the right place. Perhaps we should just leave him at this. You could take a vacation Hmitri, and the boy could learn that governing in not as easy as being an itinerrant adventurer.”

The plump, grandmotherly woman named Simmay Swanfeathers tries to break the tension, and pulls out a plate of baked goods - seemingly from nowhere. ”Cakes anyone?”

(Let me know how you address these folks. It doesn’t need to be complicated. And let me know what you do over the next couple of weeks. Also, Edson and Royston have a limited time offer to have spells put in their rings.)

She gives a bow. “Many Shadows, Madame Dulcet, and it is good to see you again.” Just in case Dulcet doesn’t remember the now middle-aged Tishe’, the Sorceress elaborates, “Tishe’ Weaver, leader of the Sunrise Song. Emrys marvels at the immense size of the beast ... it's size is truly colossal at any scale for any living creature ... dwarfing most dragons. It is easily more than 64 feet long and weighing more than 125 tons would be a conservative estimate. A creature of that immensity could easily make little work of the dead that lie here. The purple worm is easily half his size. The meal should add a few segments to his length.

Emrys and Daemon make their way to lands of his childhood home, Culverheart. It's as majestic and glorious as he remembers it. It feels good to be in Culverwood's embrace and see all the familiar faces of the people, plants and animals that live there. As they approach his balcony, he can see that his father appears to be waiting for him. He could never surprise him.

After a short and rather formal greeting, Emrys introduces his snake friend Daemon. The snake also says hello. Myrridan raises an eyebrow, but doesn't seem too surprised at all. There were witches on the property ... one of which had a talking owl that didn't get along with the other animals.

Emrys then goes into the tale of their fight with the bloodweed and their combat with Sarr. He got a reaction with the mention of Sarr that he wasn't expecting. At first it was disbelief ... the look of shock told him that ... but Myrridan knew his son was telling the truth. He quickly ushers him inside and asks to tell more ... and more he told. Emrys wondered how he would tell him of his meeting with Gargul ... and then Myrridan asks, "Where is your walking stick?"

Tishe is quiet. But she remembers this Dulcet from a time past. She greets the crone, asking if the old woman remembers her. [b]”I remember you child. A bright and respectful girl then as now. I would say young lady, but that terms is not for people like us, people who have to work hard to make our way in the Wold - and to make the Wold safe for others. Welcome to the Cinnamon Valley - or rather, welcome back. The battle for the Sargrass must’ve held a special place for your, perhaps more than any other hero involved in that battle.” About Tishe’s height as she reaches forward to touch her cheek. This might have seemed much too familiar from anyone else, but from Dulcet it just seems ... right.

Velarin greets the Council. Then he sends a message to Emrys, bidding him return to Magpie Crossing.
All the members of the Council are quick to acklowledge the efforts of the Heroes to meet immediate needs and to move among the people to instill hope.

Sir Royston is quick to apologize to the testy Lord Hmitri. Simmay gives Royston and approving nod as he backtracks a bit, finally asking if it is alright if they local townsfolk to use their own money to build an orphanage? Lord Himiri regards the man for a bit. [b]”I see that you are new here, and that your intentions are good. But sometimes a hasty good can become a problem in the long run. We need to see how to best lead this community to solve these problems. There are empty farmhouses out there. There are families that have lost children, men and women suddenly struggling to piece their lives back together with the loss of a spouse and family. And there are crops out there will may be going to waste.

“I tell you what - Sir Royston is it? I tell you what good Sir Royston, go to the Temple of Alemi, if you will, and speak with Brother Daevon there. He is a good man and you can trust him. Then arrange for those who have pledged money to provide those funds to Brother Daevon to care for those in need. We will open the Community Center to meet needs temporarily, setting up tents as needed. And we’ll reach out through the community to see how we can best connect folks, because it’s these connections that will get us to the solutions this community really needs.”

Brom tells the Council that he’s been making sure the farmers in the area can get back on their feet. Brom steps away for a moment, and is pleased to see that those running the house in their absence have keep the beer fresh and cool down in the larder.

Two weeks pass.

Emrys greets his father, and the speak of many things. The subject of Emrys’ walking stick comes up, and Emrys show him the broken pieces of the stick. Emrys father is very upset. At some point, Velarin magically contacts Emrys, but the summons is ignored. Emrys spends the time in the Culverwood with his father.

(As for the Titan Centipede, thanks for the clarification on the size. We will consider it to be 30’ tall, but with a 30’ reach it can clearly stretch beyond that.)
-------------------------------------
In town, three members of the Pitchfork Council return to their respective community, leaving Lord Hmitri as the Mayor of Magpie Crossing. Sir Royston gladly agrees to the Mayor’s request, and works with Brother Daevon to help those in need.

Velarin works on scrolls and takes time to also help in the community. Brom and Barratore move out into the surrounding areas that were hard hit by the Bloodweed Infestation. Edson work with some of the children struggling with what happend. Tishe silently continues her efforts escorting and helping refugees and Valley residents to get back on third feet.

Brom and Edson manage to squeeze in a bit of WLA training. Brom is able to send a letter to his new friend.

During this time, Sir Royston is visited by a large, colorful winged creature. It has the body of a seductive, winged elven woman from the waist up and that of a snake from the waist down. Folks in town freeze in their steps at the appearance of the creature. ”Greetings Sir Royston, for you have found favor with the Gods. I am here to provide assistance to you. If you will but extend your hand with that ring of yours.” Assuming he does so, she casts Break Enchantment into his ring. Then she bows low and and then takes to the air, flying quickly away. Those nearby move respectfully away, muttering ”...favor with the Gods, favor with the Gods…

Tishe, Velarin, Sir Royston, Edson, Brom and Barratore all get one Hero Point for helping the community get back on its feet.

-------------------------------------
After a couple weeks, Dulcet arrives back in town. She visits the heroes at the Manor with Lord Hmitri, but she is clearly concerned about something.

She relates that for some time now, she has heard tales of ancient powers in the hills some days travel to the north. At first she wrote this off as rumor. But she began to feel a stirring in the rivulets of Woldsblood that run through the Wold, and when the bloodweed invasion happened, she thought perhaps it was related to that. Now she does not think so. Perhaps it is related to the shadows that erupted from Glitterox? Perhaps it is related to that red dragon that flew in the skies above them a while back?

She is not sure what is going on, but she is sure that it is something. She has consulted with diviners in Witchspawn, and she believes that this source of her concern comes from an area that used to be a city called Ahmet. It is now little more than a collection of villages around a failing mine. But in her heart, she can feel something is not right. Since the community in the Cinnamon Valley seems to be bouncing back, thanks largely to the help of the Keepers of the Vale, perhaps they could make a journey north to satisfy the curiosity of an old woman?

She can provide a rough map if that would help.

After the time at Cluverheart Emrys rejoins the group in the Manor house through a bit of magic. Tishe is happy Dulcet remembers her and eagerly looks at the map. Velarin thinks the report is worth looking into and will be ready to leave in the morning. After spending time helping and training Edson is ready to throw himself at the new situation as well.

None of the Keepers seem to have any aversion to checking out the area Dulcet spoke of. Looking at the map you can see that it is closer to the dread then to the contested lands. It would take no great mental leap to assume that this is not an area in a lot of contact with the rest of the Wold.

There is some concern, expressed by Barratore, about an emissary from the Catacombs being able to find them but there does not seem to be a pressing need to head out at this very minute. If they have not arrived by the time you head out it can be assumed they will find you.

Sir Royston has already made a trip to the Catacombs and like Barratore awaits a delivery.

{ooc: Regarding catacombs, there no way to tell in real time when things arrive. Still being the new GM on the block I need to look into the mechanics of what is allowed. It seems the plan is to move out in the morning. The journey will not be that far, less then 15 miles you are sure. Depending on how you see fit to travel the journey’s time will clearly varies but regardless you can easily reach the marsh area containing several isolated villages within a days travel, two at the most.

{ooc: What can’t a bloodwitch do?}
{ooc: Do things have to stay within the on mile area to benefit from the riturals? Does the party have Bless on it for one year now?}

Rising early Emrys brings together his coven and casts several rituals that benefit Magpie Crossing and the immediately surrounding area for the next year. Although they do not know why they feel a sense of wellness lessening their fears and helping them believe all is well.

The Keepers have little to prepare for the journey and therefore do not have a lot that will slow them down in leaving. The orders they had been expecting from the catacombs arrive in the morning as well. {ooc: Add the items now, there is no reason to think the transaction won’t go though.} Barratore has his priorities straight and makes sure that the larder is well stocked and Brom stocks his favorite ales.

Finishing up a crafting project and starting another Sir Royston is ready for the journey. {ooc: did you purchase the supplies in the catacombs? I believe you are supposed to.} Wanting to be prepared Edson checks and re-checks his gear and goes to meet the group.

As the journey is not all that far the group arrives on the edge of a marshy area near nightfall. A bout a quarter mile into the marsh is an isolated villages and despite the low hanging fog you see candles inside of buildings but there is not a lot of activity. From where you are it is a small village that appears to be setting in for another night.

Between the group and the village there is other movement something quite odd. A creature maybe, large tendrils ending in tiny claws unfurl from the central stalk of this plant, which rises like a serpent ready to strike. It was at least one hundred feet away and as soon as you saw it move it blended back into the march. Maybe a predator grabbing a quick meal.

{ooc: Map added. You can see where the movement was. I am not going to be real stick on the map on this if you decide to engage}

What are you doing now?

This is how it is written ... to my interpretation all the effects last a year for designated group ... some can selected and left out of the party.

"Ritual of Blessings or Curses (Knowledge Religion): Success: The bloodwitch calls down a blessing or a curse on all creatures he designates within one mile. He may designate them by name, religion, alignments, race, profession, and so on. Cursed creatures are affected as by a Bane spell, and the lands in range that they work or own are affected as by the Stunt Growth option of the Diminish Plants spell. Blessed creatures are affected as by a Bless spell, and lands in range that they work or own are affected as by the Enrichment option of the Plant Growth spell. The effects of this ritual can be negated on an individual basis with a DC25 Will save. The blessing or curse lasts for one year or until ended by the bloodwitch or by a Wish or Miracle spell or by divine intervention. Failure: The coven is sickened."

Not wanting to deprive Brom or Barratore a good cobweb shaking, Emrys spends his time trying to identifying this predatory plant ... searching the recesses of his mind for such a creature.

The map you had been given showed an area marked off to the north and slightly east of The Dread. It should be sort of the actual Dread but still it is that direction. {ooc: Between the Dread marking on the Cinnamon Valley map and the first contour line of Wolf Hill}

Stopping to study Emrys take a moment trying to identify the predatory plant. Emrys: Highlight to display spoiler: { A voracious, flesh-eating carnivore, the viper vine has a single enormous bloom arising from a thick, leafy tangle of snake-like vines. When the plant senses the approach of suitable prey through its sensitive, shallowly buried root system, it rises up like an agitated snake and unfurls its brightly colored bloom, an act that releases a cloud of mind-numbing pollen. While stories speaking of the plant's ability to lure prey into its clutches by virtue of its swaying motion persist, this effect is in fact created by this invisible, odorless pollen cloud. Immune to acid. }

The other casters hold back respecting the idea of letting more front line folks shake off the cobwebs.

Happy to shake off the cobwebs Barratore moves forward along with Brom, Edson and Sir Royston. In the lead Barratore does not notice anything out of the ordinary until three more plants creatures rise from the fetid water. Edson behind Brom and Sir Royston is happy to get a chance to use his new bow. Brom, having very sharp eyes today, spots movement to the right and left side of the initial plant creature. Something is there but has not revealed itself from the water. {ooc: You just ruined my little plan}
