Orders are orders

DM Robert - "So Briadoc Greenstocking, what have you been up to while we have been gone? Care to show me?"
Monday July 16th, 2018 8:32:17 PM

Bartomus brings back a load of food and he and Briadoc compare the various merits of the food. All of it is good, but nothing exceptional. Bartomus tries to work on some projects but things are slipping through his fingers. It's almost as if the wood itself is resisting his efforts.

Micah asks to see what Briadoc is has been doing. Going into the 'temple' area of head quarters Micah observes a what can only be described as perhaps a squaters attempt to make a garden. There are a variety of shelves which are no more than obviously used and discarded planks on cracked bricks. These shelves are in turn loaded with a wide range of plant pots, and a few very dinged up cooking pans. However, the plants growing in them appear to be in good health. Briadoc shows you the herb shelf which i going along quite well. There is also a shelf of what Briadoc describes as orchids, but they are still in the early stages of growing."If I could get some better pots and some other things, I could start up a nice little garden on the roof." Briadoc says.

Stohp submits a name for the lake. And does some crafting, her efforts are bringing forth some good results. What are you wanting to craft? Stock has added +2 to your efforts with aid another.

Stock proposes that Briadoc become the major-domo of the headquarters. Briadoc rubs his chin and appears to think about it. "I suppose I could do that, but I'd like to make a few changes. I know you cleric and paldin types want your temple, but really, there are other churches in town and I would like to have my growing area, and add a garden to the roof. The roof garden would pay off with some fresh vegetables and the like."

Dorbin quickly dismisses the lion when Zanderallen attacks. He then explains his new summoning powers.

Sid goes shopping.

Zanderallen complement Dorbin. He agrees with the idea that Briadoc should become a caretaker for the HQ.

Micah spends some time in prayer and working on his armor. Zanderallen joins him. At night Zanerallen practices the role of wandering troubadour. The girls swoon for him.

Several days pass and the shields settle into headquarters. It seems they never really had a chance to just relax and make it fill lived in before they were off on another adventure. But one morning there is a knocking at the door. There is a rather short man, with black hair cut rather poorly. However, his clothing seems quite fine; it is all black with some trim in silver. He has a rather pinched face and a bit of a frown. "Are you the silver shields?" He asks with some disdain in his voice.

He takes out a silk handkerchief and dabs at his nose, it is quite obviously scented. "I'm here to inform you that the city council wishes to speak with you." He hands you a document. "Do try to make yourselves presentable. He intones as he spins on his heel and walks out the door.

You can see from the document you have been summoned to appear in the city council building, chamber C at noon today.

"We have to go where?""Bartomus came down as the man in black left the common room. It seemed to him that the man's nose was pointed a bit upward. He listened to what they were talking about and then looks at the document left for them.

"What are we supposed to wear? Can't say armor would be appropriate. I guess I have one really good shirt. Could wear that. Kilt is a bit battle worn though." He looked at his shirt and the kilt. He shrugged and added, "But hey, we saved them right? Including that last guy, so shouldn't we be able to just show up and hear what they have to say?"

"Presentable? I did just wash the Lizard entrails off me the other day. So I should be good for a week or so."

He leans over to Zanderallen and whispers, "I'm not an expert at this sort of thing...but my guess is you should make sure that I don't do the talking." He clicks his tongue and winks at Z.

"Dorbin - Probably keep the lion under wraps in the city council meeting. Unless we need a quick get away."

Micah is more than a little unimpressed at the pompous messenger. Uncharacteristically acting on impulse, he pulls out a silver coin and calls out to the departing figure, "Excuse me, but you did not wait for your tip."

Afterwards, he is slightly embarrassed by his momentary lapse in civility. He then considers the summons. Expecting a reception not much different in warmness than that of the officious summoner, he has no positive expectations for the upcoming meeting. He then shrugs off his momentary vexation and goes upstairs to prepare for the meeting.

Not trusting the city or what the council might ask of them, he decides to go dressed for battle.

Zanderallen is more than a little put out by the way the messenger treats them. When Micah offers him a tip he has to greatly restrain himself from bursting out laughing. As soon as the messenger is out of hearing however he can't help but let out a few chuckles. "Micah, I'm shocked at you. He most certainly deserved it but you're usually such a reserved fellow. Good work defending the honor of the Shields. Don't worry Stock, you'll just be there to look scary. Make growl a little if I give you a wink. I wonder what they want? Let's all be on our best behavior, but don't let them look down on us. Many of them might view us as upstart Fencers, so let's show them what heroes of the Fence look like." Following Micah's example Zanderallen girds himself in steel, might be a little frowned upon in the city but one had to keep up the appearance of a knight hero.

Stohp mostly crafts toys, small art objects, this and that. Just some stuff to make a little cash on the side and fill the time. Since she has no shop she pawns it off on various small businesses and street sellers she knows (Know local 34 if it's needed)- she gets a worse price of course but she doesn't have the time or interest to run her own business currently. She also works with Stock to fancy up the place some, put in some of the carvings on the woodwork they've discussed in the past (splitting the time 50/50 I guess).

When the messenger comes Stohp is busy and doesn't bother to go to the door when she hears the crowd downstairs. Once someone tells her the message she is immediately wary.

"This is either really good or really bad. If it's good the council is ready to listen to us about Lord Crimson. If it's bad then it's Lord Crimson himself who's taken notice of us and is either laying a trap or sizing us up. Regardless, be prepared everyone."

Thinking of a third option, Stohp goes out to hire some guards to watch the place while they're gone. Crimson could be luring them out to eliminate Bradoc as a witness against him. She makes sure to find people she can trust (Knowledge: Local 33).

Her own preparations for the meeting involve dressing in her fanciest outfit. Given that she bought a giant wardrobe covering every possible walk of life from common laborer to noble lord, she can get pretty fancy. (can a disguise check count for her ability to do makeup and pick the right outfit to impress? if so, 30). She comes out of her room looking absolutely stunning. She is not wearing shoes, though she's got the Taur equivalent.

"If we get into a fight it's up to you guys, I won't exactly be dressed for one." She regrets she can't help the rest dress, but all of her clothes are for female Taurs. Maybe if they all got polymorphed for the night... no, it's a silly idea. She can't get the image of the entire party as female Minotaurs out of her head though.

DM Robert - "Excuse me, but you did not wait for your tip."
Tuesday July 17th, 2018 8:23:52 PM

Bartomus is a little worried about what to wear. However, he feels the meeting will go smoothly, after all the Silver Shields saved everyone.

Stock decides that perhaps the speaking roles in this meeting were best left to other party members.

Dorbin is excited about going to the city council.

Sid seems set to go.

Micah calls out about the tip. The man neatly pivots and springs back snatching the coin from Micah's hand. "Well at least one of you has some good sense." He snarky remarks. He turns and goes on his way, you notice him bite down on the coin and then slip it into a pocket.

Micah and Zanderallen 'dress' for the meeting.

Stohp is suspicious. She's got Crimson on the mind and thinks they need to hire some guards for the headquarters. She even goes so far as to try and recruit some fellows. However, Rodrigo Diaz pops up and volunteers to keep the place safe.
Perception 20 Highlight to display spoiler: { Rodrigo's gear is looking a little worse for wear. His cheeks are somewhat hollow and his eyes seem perhaps a trifle bloodshot as if from lack of good sleep.}

Another knock at the door shortly before you leave reveals Happy. There is another fellow with him. "Hey guys I noticed Edvard Adder here earlier. Better check your cutler." He laughs at his own joke. "I have a favor to ask. This is Dirk. He's my brother's cousin's wife's son. He's not bad with the instruments but he say's he wants to experience some adventure to write some new ballads. I'd appreciate if he could tag along for awhile." To say that Dirk would blend into the crowd would be an understatement. Nothing of note is discernible with him. He has brown hair that runs just below his chin all around, brown expressive eyes, standard leather equipment and an assortment of musical instruments tied behind his pack.

"As his brother's cousin's wife's son, allow me to introduce myself. I'm Dirk Devlin, bard extraordinaire and traveler from the mountains to the plains. I've spent many years wandering this great world, but shying away from real adventure as of late. My kind brethren is correct, I am looking for some adventure and would love the opportunity to join your merry little band of misfits, if you deem myself worthy."

A slight nod of his head as he unslings his pack and takes out a small pair of bagpipes.

"Does anyone want to hear some bagpipes?"

He looks at the bagpipes skeptically fearing any sound emanating from them may sound more like Emily in pain than instrumental music, but keeps this opinion to himself.

Stohp queries Rodrigo on his health. Rodrigo shakes his head and then quietly tells her, "In truth I've been taking some jobs recently that have caused me to be physically ill. I thought I'd try to nose around and find out some information on that Crimson fellow. Unfortunately that means taking a job or two with some seedier elements. And to make matters worse I've not been able to find out anything."

Stock greets Dirk and asks if everyone is ready to go.

Dorbin is excited about having a bag pipe progression to the Gold level of The Float (the city council there).

Sid agrees and asks if the party should arrive announced by bagpipes.

Micah welcomes Dirk but seems dubious about the bag pipes, and for perhaps good reason, because really other than Amazing Grace or The Cambell's are Coming, there are few songs that sound good with bagpipes only.

Zanderallen greets Dirk, but is really ready to go.

The party starts out and heads onward and upward. They eventually come to the council building, a large two story building of imposing granite. The building is outwardly plain and simple simply stating "Municipal Building" in large carved letters. Inside it is clean and tiled in gleaming white. You are led to Chamber C and introduced. The chamber is obviously a meeting room but on a grader scale than any of you have ever seen. The walls are covered in a thin sheet of marble, the floor also seems to be tiled in marble. Your bootsteps echo as you walk in. There is a large table of red mahgony. Seated at the far end are three individuals.

The woman speaks. "Yes and of course as you've no doubt guessed we have a request of you."

The older gentleman speaks. "Please you two, you try not to be formal and wind up sounding like you're patronizing them. I am Lord Jonas Yeager and as you may or may not know, for I've had some information on your efforts on and off the Float, things are changing. The Crying Wood has retreated. That opens up a large portion of the woodlands that used to keep us penned in. Bartomus takes in the council. He is impressed with the passion and sincerity of Lord Yeager.

Stohp waits patiently for the narration to continue.

Stock takes a seat admiring the stonework and makes a comment about the craftsmanship.

The younger lord starts to snicker and then covers his mouth quickly and coughs. The Lady says, "Well actually sir dwarf, I'm not sure I've got your name, Oh heavens in our rush I think we may have been a bit presumptuous. I am Lady Bethany Crowl, the younger gentleman to my left is Lord Damon Peerimon, and our leader is Lord Jonas Yeager. As you know the council has 7 members so we are only a portion and have been allotted the task of this meeting."

Lord Peerimon then says, "I apologize but you see this building was built by dwarves. It was commissioned about 80 years ago I believe. It took them 5 years to build."

Dorbin recognizes the Lords and Lady in the room with them, but does not provide introductions. He complements Lord Yeager on his families efforts to help the citizens of the Float.

Micah remembers all the adventures the shields have had so far in The Float. He prompts the Lord to continue.

Lord Yeager, nods. "I'm not sure how well you are acquainted with the various theories of economics and politics. Some 10 years ago or so there was a great, well I guess you could say a time when the stars were right and great evil wrought changes across the entire Wold. That was when an adventuring party known as the Crimson Shields of Hope was based in the city, and they did much good before they retired. But that is neither here nor there. At the end of this catastrophe the Float was teleported from a lake near Plateau City to where we are currently. Needless to say that caused some problems. We were put in a foreign lake and surrounded by a wood we could not enter. Our only exports become fish and a few services like the Sages Guild, and some intellectual properties. But our imports to survive were far greater than we could take in. Likewise we could not really raise taxes, because the residents could not afford it either. We had to encourage a luxury industry for export purposes. Now we have an opportunity for growth again. With the Crying Wood being, I guess you could say excised, to its current location we no longer have to import all our lumber needs. We could again become a prosperous trading center, but we need to know what's out there." He pauses in his speech and rings a small bell. A well dressed man comes in and Yeager whispers quietly into his ear.

Zanderallen puts forth a brief outline of what the shields have done and asks about the request.

Lord Peerimon rises from his seat and address the party. "Well that brings us to the crux of it doesn't it. The forest out there is vast, we don't know how big exactly because it's not like we could go out and survey it. Likewise we don't know what's really beyond it. We've heard rumors though. We know Elvenguard is out there, Knowledge local 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { It is an elven community rumored to have been in the mid northern section of the wood....which would put it smack in the middle of the raised escarpment that now holds the Crying Woods.}. We figure you could go out and start exploring the woods clockwise from the edge of that escarpment."

Dirk remains silent.

The man Yeager was talking to returns with 3 other men. They are carrying several trays loaded with glasses and decanters. They begin with the Lords and Lady of course and provide them with something to drink. It appears they have a selection to choose from. They come around to you.

Bartomus tried to follow the conversation and the history lesson, but he found his mind wandering about the exquisite carving of the reception room. He wasn't all that familiar with how the Float had become the Float. But, he looked up at a person with a platter of various glasses filled with refreshments. He carefully lifted a tall glass that was embossed with silver. The cold liquid inside was sweet and and slightly tart at the same time.

"Thank you so much." He said with a genuine smile at the man who had stopped in front of him and offered the drink. He listened when Dorbin followed up with specific questions. Seemed like Dorbin had an idea that there may be more to this mission than seemed. Bartomus turned his focus on Lord Peerimon.

Zanderallen takes a drink, thanking the server, and listens gravely to the proposal. He looks around at his companions and responds to the lords and lady of the council. "There is merit in what you say. The new circumstances of the Crying Wood offer great opportunity. But you are asking us to put ourselves into potentially some great danger..." He let's the sentence trail off waiting to see how they answer him and others.

Sid generally knows his part in these moments; the quiet observer and guard for his friends. He knows he's not the best at it, but he tries. At this news he sits upright and his eyes shine brightly. A large smile bursts upon his face before he can contain himself. He coughs a bit and takes the glass, nodding thankfully. "My Lords and Ladies, this would be quite the dangerous undertaking with as little information as we have. And sadly I am afraid that our supplies for such a venture are not for this kind of undertaking, as we mostly have been doing city work where supplies are comparatively ample. We surely are in no position to accept." As he is talking he inches closer to the edge of his seat, fully engaged, with almost a manic expression in his eyes.

He takes a look around him and refuses to be convinced that the stonework, as fine as it is, is the work of dwarves.

Must not have been deep dwelling dwarves...

He snaps to as he hears the request from the council...and then Z...and then Sid.

Hold your tongue Stock. It won't be helping a thing if you talk. Instead, he gives slight smile, squints his eyes and stares at Lord Peerimon, regardless of who is talking.

So it's not about Crimson at all. Ok then. "Could you give us more details about this lizard folk village? Are they hostile, or has there been peaceful contact before? Are you sending a negotiator with us or are we supposed to make some sort of trade deal on our own? Or are we just establishing contact and mapping the area?"

Having had some training in history and politics, he considers the implications of what the council is asking. He is not inclined to be a pawn of these politicians, but neither is he unaware that this is a potential opportunity to significantly produce benefit for the residents of the Float.

Pausing a moment to await responses to the others' questions, he adds his own, careful to keep his tone and body language amiable and non-confrontational, "What is the expected outcome of any such exploration?"

He then hesitates to emphasize his next questions, "Will we be acting in any official capacity and what are the political implications of us doing so? Also, who will have legal claim, he glances momentarily at Sid," and commercial rights to any of the previously unexplored regions?"

DM Robert - "But you are asking us to put ourselves into potentially some great danger..."
Saturday July 21st, 2018 10:59:56 AM

Dirk is impressed with the building and contemplates being able to sketch lizard folk.

Dorbin speaks up about the choices of whom to seek out first. 1-I've tried looking some things up, the village of the elves is not on any map that I can find. From the description given it may be in the center of the escarpment now containing the full anger of the Crying Woods. This is something that higher up DM's will have to talk about. 2-Lizard folk were rumored to be in the area. If you look at the geography map on the Wiki board. That northern river is a feeder river into the Lake the short southern river is a feeder as well. The other rivers connecting to the lake, south and west are probably outgoing rivers.

Yeager sort of gives a non-commental nod to Dorbin's question. "Elvenguard is what you speak of. Unfortunately we don't have a reliable location for Elvenguard. It may still lie in the Crying Wood. Jella Jadenth has not really said anything about Elvenguard, only that the Crying Wood has retreated.

Lady Crowl adds, "The north eastern section is relatively close and there is a river there that feeds into the lake. There may potentially be some commerce from that area that can make its way down to us."

Bartomus thanks the council for its recognition.

Zanderallen hints, okay blatantly states, that this mission could be hazardous.

Sid drops a line about the hazards of the mission and being unprepared for it. Though he seems quite eager as he scoots to the edge of his seat.

Lord Peerimon quips, "I thought risk was your business, being heroes and all. Aren't some of you members of the Woldian League of Adventurers?"

Stock can't seem to think of anything nice to say and prudently decides to just play the strong silent type.

Stohp asks why the lizards and what kind of negotiation powers they could have.

Lord Yeager responds, "We're going on what we know right now. The Lizard Folk were rumored to have been in that area and granted that Drow town as well. Frankly we're not certain, it's not like we've been really able to penetrate into the woods at all. The village of Cutter was only set up in the last year or so and it has only been productive through the aid of Jella otherwise it would never have been able to get any product to us."

Micah lays it on the line. What does the council expect of them, what discretionary powers do they have, and how are they going to be rewarded.

Lord Peerimon nods and smiles. "Boldly spoken."

Lord Yeager speaks, "The council wants you to try and find this rumored lizardfolk community in the Northeast. The council would like the party to determine the ‘climate’ of the village, in other words are they hostile? If they are hostile the council wants the Silver Shields to try and convince the lizard fold to move off, forcibly if necessary. If you (all) do not think they can do this by yourselves then they can report back and perhaps a military campaign would have to be considered. If the lizard folk seem harmless, or potentially an ally then the lizard folk community can continue as is. The Silver Shields do not have the direct power to create a treaty, but you can set up parameters and then report back to the council and a full delegation will then proceed to the village, if such a village exits." He pauses.

Lord Perrimon then cuts in, "AS to remuneration, I think it's a bit early to go carving up the new lands as it were. After all it has never been clearly established what the city limits are or for that matter what the Geo-political climate is like, for all we know the Crying Woods were laid claim to by some kingdom. But certainly we, the full council that is, may have to look into setting up homesteading claims and the like, at least we'd like to hope so. And certainly as trail blazers I'm sure the council would be willing to award you such a grant, once they became available, and if you should want to retire to work your claim."

Lord Yaeger picks up, "Indeed, for now we can only offer you 2 weeks of supplies. There will be a turtle boat waiting to pick them up tomorrow morning and it will return every 2 days to see if you want to be picked up. There will undoubtedly be more fuller rewards depending on the success of your mission."

PS as a reminder you guys are pretty flush right now and at your WBL.

"So we scout out what is out there, if we make contact with a village, or two, we can offer them the interest of the Float?" Bartomus turned and looked at Lord Perrimon. "So, is there something that we can leave their leaders from the Council? Seems that there should be something we can present to them."

Bartomus smiled at the Lords and took another sip from the exquisite glass flute. "A cask of this would also be a great addition to the supplies."

"I agree, a cask or two of this fine drink would boost our spirits and keep us hydrated through our journey."

Dirk stops and thinks for a moment as he reflects on Lord Yeager's comments and then replies.

"So this is a scouting and reconnaissance mission? I spent some time with a scout many years ago who taught me a thing or two; primarily that of silence for this sort of mission. I think I may want to leave a few of my instruments behind, as a precaution. Would this be agreeable?"

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:40/40 CMD:15]
Monday July 23rd, 2018 11:35:35 AM

Dorbin, being a little younger and not quite as wise in the ways of politics, seems more excited and cannot understand the reluctance of the others. He says to the council members, "So we represent the council? That is indeed a great honor. I, for one, would indeed be honored to go out and see what we can find in this new area. If we should locate elves, we will report their location back and see if even they may be interested in trade as well."

He does smile into his wine already imagining hacking through brush through uncharted lands. "Oh, actually," he says looking, "I know there are bird tokens that can diliver messages. If we're doing negotiations we should have several of those to contact the council for possible, if temporary, negotians; status updates; and warnings of imminate threats. We would need to designate a primary and secondary point of contact."

As the talk drags on, Stock's mind begins to wander again. He's more of an instinctual creature so planning isn't really his game. Right now his instincts are telling him that this is going to be more difficult than any of the Shields know and in ways they can't predicts...unless...

"Is Jella nearby for an interview? Any chance she has some information to share about this?"

Micah displays no reaction to the council's response, but inwardly is surprised and pleased that they received as much clarification and accommodation as they did. Their ready concessions make him suspect that this is much more important to the council than they are letting on.

There is, however, one term in their proposal that he is not satisfied with. He explains it calmly, "Thank you very much for the explanation and clear definition of what your expectations are and the parameters under which we can operate. The offer for supplies is appropriate and much appreciated, but I do have one concern regarding our transportation.

"Should the lizardfolk or other, heretofore unknown residents, prove hostile, it might not be tenable for us to wait up to two days to be picked up. We request that you arrange to have transportation wait for us nearby offshore, ready to extract us at a moment's notice should it prove necessary and that such transportation be available for at least two weeks after we set foot on shore."

Monday July 23rd, 2018 6:34:30 PM

Zanderallen's eyes narrow as the council gives their terms. A lot of nice sounding promises but decidedly little in terms of concrete agreements. And the Fence had seen just how much the promises of the upper levels of government could be trusted. Still the journey would be fun and they would be supplied by the council. And who was to say they had to tell the council all they found. The location of rich natural resources could become valuable bargaining chips later on. For if the Silver Shields were going to become a powerful guild they would need resources and influence. Mostly satisfied he waits for their response to Micah's counter proposal, glad the solid clergyman was thinking of all the possibilities.

DM Robert - "A cask of this would also be a great addition to the supplies."
Monday July 23rd, 2018 8:49:10 PM

Bartomus raises an interesting question, should the party have trinkets to present the natives, and maybe a cask or two.

Lord Damon Peerimon speaks, "And what would you propose to carry? We don't know that there are actually any inhabitants much less what they might need that The Float could provide. That's why we're sending you out there."

Dirk asks about bringing his instruments as well as getting a couple of casks of the wine they are drinking.

Lord Jonas Yeager responds "I would not presume to recommend what you should pack in regards to your gear, you are the professionals."

Lady Bethany Crowl chimes in "I hardly think that packing in a 'cask or two' is appropriate. We certainly don't need inebriated ambassadors."

Dorbin seems willing to go and asks about any others they may find.

Lord Yeager responds "Yes that would be reasonable. I'm not sure how many groups you may find in two weeks time."

Sid asks about ways of communication.

Lady Crowl ponders, "You speak of the magical item feather token I believe. Somewhat inexpensive, however it requires a fairly experienced mage to create it. There is the druid spell animal messenger, but again we would run into a time delay for delivery. Let me think for a minute." She pins a note and hands it to a page.

Stock asks about Jella.

Lord Peerimon waves his hand, "She has done off into the woods again to see how Cutter is prospering."

Micah lays his concerns smack on the table.

Lord Yeager seems to be chewing the inside of his cheek, "That seems like a reasonable request. But the turtle would have to remain off shore. Do you have some way to signal the turtle man?"

Zanderallen seems ever suspicious of the ruling body of The Float hmm, don't Paladins have to follow the laws even if they don't like them of the respective kingdoms in which they live or for whom they are pledged?. He contemplates a power base for the Silver Shields to become a powerful guild of merchants.

The page returns with 2 scrolls and hands them to Lady Crowl. She nods to herself and pushes them across the table toward Micah. "Several years ago a cleric left these with the city as a donation. I believe they are 2 clerical scrolls of Sending. They are valuable but should enable one, well two time communication with one of the council members."
Sending School evocation; Level cleric 4, sorcerer/wizard 5
You contact a particular creature with which you are familiar and send a short message of 25 words or less to the subject. The subject recognizes you if it knows you. It can answer in like manner immediately. A creature with an Intelligence score as low as 1 can understand the sending, though the subject’s ability to react is limited as normal by its Intelligence. Even if the sending is received, the subject is not obligated to act upon it in any manner. If the creature in question is not on the same plane of existence as you are, there is a 5% chance that the sending does not arrive. (Local conditions on other planes may worsen this chance considerably.)

Lord Yeager smiles and nods. "As to parameters for negotiations, we are strictly talking trade here and only if they are not belligerent. If they are hostile they will need to be dealt with, either convinced to move on or well dealt with. No mutual assistance if attacked stuff. As to what The Float needs, guaranteed safe passage water ways, raw resources, though lumber is the only thing I can think of that a forest produces. Perhaps your druid can spot some other resources in the area that can be harvested for the good of The Float. If any groups you encounter, that aren't hostile, can provide any sort of decent market place for goods made in The Float then that of course will help the overall economy."

Lord Peerimon asks, "Are there any more questions you may have?"

"But, I thought that he just said we wouldn't know what to give them, so it seems we are at most a scouting mission, as ambassadors would surely have indications of their status and position?" Bartomus noted in a bit of frustration to the manner the first lord had treated his suggestion.

"Was a craftsman before I fell in with these folk," Bartomus said with a some thought. "Folks are going to know what it is they can buy from us, and what it is that we need to buy from them. "

He sipped from the flute and this time gulped the last little bit of the liquid, and looked at the Councilors trying to get a sense of what they were really wanting to have happen.

Stohp has a sudden notion that makes her frown in thought. "I don't think any of us has any mapmaking skill. If we do find the lizardfolk then the only way to find them again would be for us to lead any group back. It's probably to dangerous to bring a scholar along on this trip, but it's definitely going to take a second trip with a good mapmaker before any trade can really start."

She ponders it some more. "Maybe the adventurers guild has someone who'd be willing and capable of coming along. Is it ok if I ask around or do you want to keep this private for now?"

Bartomus asks about their status and what they should have and know about. Bartomus is not sure what he can tell about these folks.

Lady Crowl raises a hand, which you can see has 2 expensive rings on it, "Perhaps ambassador was too strong a word for your position, but then scout may seem like too weak a word. You are the Silver Shields and in The Float you have something of a reputation. But in the wilds none may know who you are. Therefore you are scouts but also representatives of The Float. Your actions reflect back onto your home and employers so you should conduct yourself as you would wish others to perceive you." She gives a bit of the evil eye to Lord Peerimon, "Please forgive the implied slight of our younger councilor."

Stohp remains silent, keeping her opinions to herself. But then speaks up about map-making.

Lord Yeager bobbles his head in something of a nod and a shake. "Your point is understood, but I think for now that we will leave the scouting to the Silver Shields. I believe you are up to the challenges of facing the unknown and returning."

Dirk comments about map-making as well.

Lord Peerimon nods once. "I'm sure you will do fine." He cocks his head to the side suddenly and then pulls out some paper. "I thought there were only 7 Silver Shields but there are 8 of you here." He checks his notes again. "Then again it seems to be that your charter keeps having changes made to the roster."

Stock keeps quiet trying to think what he's heard about lizard folk. All he can remember is the rumors that have already been discussed, that there were some supposedly in the northern woods somewhere. Stock contemplates when the Shields had to venture into the Crying Woods and face the hostility of a living forest. They needed vials of that unguent to keep the forest from attacking them. How did the lizard folk get around that. Maybe it's all just a rumor, maybe the lizard folk actually live beyond the forest, like the village of Cutter was set up beyond the outskirts of the crying wood at the time.

Sid asks about some sort of insurance payment.

Lord Peerimon responds. "Any remuneration will be to the Silver Shields, how they choose to divide up the sum will be their choice."

Dorbin remains silent.

Micah Micah agrees to the terms and asks who they should contact.

Lady Crowl smiles, "As you wish. I believe the magic of the scroll enable whomever you wish to contact to be able to respond. Certainly any of us would be sufficient, though it may take a few minutes for us to consult before a response can be formulated, unless of course there is an emergency."

Zanderallen restates the mission parameters.

Lord Yeager smiles and rises. "Exactly my boy." He rings the summoning bell. You can see a buffet of food being toted in and place on one of the side tables. He offers his hand and shakes the hands of all the Silver Shields. "Your turtle and supplies will be ready at first light. And in case you missed lunch we have some refreshments."

Lady Crowl likewise rises and offers her hand to the Silver Shields.

Lord Peerimon rises and offers his hand last. He also whispers to each of you privately. "And let's not forget the old tales of a lost city of gold in the Crying Wood. If you should run across that I don't think there's a need to mark it on a map." He winks.

Dirk stands and walks over and grabs some of the food. He takes his time and eats slowly, all the while taking in the surroundings and the people standing around. He doesn't know them, but he will soon have to entrust his life with theirs as they band together and explore out in this great new adventure.

Wednesday July 25th, 2018 6:00:17 PM

Zanderallen shakes hands with the council members, setting aside his reservations for the time being. They were being made somewhat official representatives of the Float setting out to newly open lands. Whatever misgivings about how some areas of the float were run needs be set aside. But by Domi he would do everything in his power to make sure the common people of the Float benefited from any new opportunities and not just add more gold into the pockets of the powerful upper levels. He was a Fence level boy through and through. "Looks like you may have an opportunity to get in touch with your wild side Bart. You've always seemed rather tame compared to stories of druids I've been told growing up."

DM Robert - Still walking on the civilized side.
Wednesday July 25th, 2018 8:33:12 PM

Sid eats and thinks the deal is sound enough.

Bartomus contemplates the plan and if his armor is at the HQ. I checked the catacombs your order was processed on July 13 so it is there.

Stohp eats daintily for one so large.

Dorbin nibbles a few bites. It's really rather good.

Micah cautiously enjoys himself. It seems the other shields are of the same mind around the upper crust of The Float.

Dirk eats and worries somewhat about what the future will bring.

Zanderallen is determined not to become a puppet of the powers that be. He encourages Bartomus to embrace the wild side of being a druid.

The party is over and the group returns to their headquarters. On their way they see newsies shouting about a special proclamation. If you wish to spend a copper you may read the spoiler. Highlight to display spoiler: { Extra, By Overwhelming majority The Float now rests in Turtle Lake. However, since so many citizens suggested that as the name there is no way to reward everyone. The town council proclaims that since it is now know that the woods surrounding Turtle Lake are no longer possessed they cannot really be called the Crying Woods anymore. Therefore the contest shall be reapplied to naming the woods around The Float. One or several names can be suggested as there appears on some of the older maps to be some breaks in the foliage for division purposes. However, a person may only enter once and must either put a single name in for the woods or come up with several names for the woods. As an example the east woods and west woods. Though the paper recommends not using those or the contest would likely again default to no winner.}

The citizens wave as the Silver Shields walk by but they don't seem as happy as when the Shields walked by earlier this morning.

Back at headquaters you see Rodrigo standing in front of the doors. He salutes you as you near. "Everythings quite here."

You also hear Briadoc puttering around upstairs and apparently talking. Looking in you see he is talking to his plants.

It is now about 5 pm. "Tomorrow" you will need to be ready and at the dock.
Which is DM speak for if you want to do anything or make plans I can let you have some time on the board to do it, or if not then we can get on the turtle boat tomorrow.

"Here kid, a silver for the paper - share with your buddies, ok?" Bartomus said as he flipped the silver piece to the newsie and looked at her and the others. He took the paper out of the astonished kid's hands as her buddies began circling about her. "Turtle Lake, ok, then, huh."

He passed the paper about to the others and saw a wrapped bundle with his name on it. He grinned, "It's here!"

He took to the package and and tore off the paper. It was a suit of scalemail armor made out of darkwood. The scales were polished and it appeared the wood shined a bit in the light. Each of the scales were held in place by a blue and green cord attached to a dark cloth background. The breast scales were larger and the use of acorns as design elements was made clear on these pieces having a silver color highlighting them.

The armor was a variation of his kilt, with a scale mail variation of a kilt allowing for a bit more protection when worn with the accompanying guards. He got a big grin on his face, "Well, this will be worth having for the tomorrow's ahead."

"Thanks Bart, I'm a little shy on coins." Dirk says as he is handed the paper and takes a look at it.

He holds up a finger to the others and grabs his book and quill from his pack. He then begins to quickly scratch down a few of the interesting contents from the paper and then folds his book back up and places it into his pack. Dirk then hands the paper off to the next person. He isn't shy on coins, he's just very cheap.

"If possible, I'd like to keep that paper with me, if that's okay with everyone else."

Dirk now grabs his pipe, stuffs it with tobacco, and lights it. He enjoys the flavored tobacco blend with a contented smile on his face. The adventure is about to begin!

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:40/40 CMD:15]
Thursday July 26th, 2018 11:37:12 AM

Dorbin heads back to the HQ and really isn't paying that much attention to the others on the Float. He is still quite excited that he, Dorbin, is going to actually represent the Council of the Float. He knows he isn't really that good at talking and being an ambassador, but that doesn't matter to him. He figures he'll figure that out along the way -- and the sights he is going to see in the old crying wood? Wow. He checks his notebooks to make sure he's got plenty of blank pages because he knows he's going to fill them up.

Micah (John) HP: 52/52 AC: 24/12/24) CMD:18

"Turtle Lake. Makes sense," mutters Micah as he looks at the announcement.

He heads back to the headquarters and starts mentally planning for their trip.

Ropes, mapping supplies, healing kits, food and water, a whistle to signal the turtle boat he notes mentally.

Aloud he asks, "Do we need camping gear? Except for our one excursion I have never been off the Float and can only speculate what we will need."

Stock pats his belly and says, "Those councilors sure put out a good spread...I don't know though. I don't trust 'em. Sure they haven't done nothing to me but I expect that when we return things won't be quite what we think they are right now...I'm just sayin'..." He lets his comment die there.

Stock heads up to his room and ensures his bags are packed.

Having been gone for a bit Zanderallen comes back in with a cushioned pouch and a large jiggling sack. Dropping the sack into the party stockpile he goes along to everyone handing them 2 potions of cure moderate wounds. "Ordered these before we knew you were joining up, Dirk. Have my two, I have other means of keeping myself going in a fight."

Everyone please add two Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds to your equipment. They were purchased using money gained by selling unwanted party magic items. Also adding 27,000gp to the party stockpile.

Sid nods, "I think they made us a fair enough deal, but they also, I don't know, didn't seem so invested in this being a success. I mean, I'm all for this, but I was serious when I said that we weren't really prepared for this type of adventure and I was told that I was the expert and that I was prepared for this." Sid shakes his head, "Also if we're done talking for the moment I have a few things to get and then I'm heading home. I'll see you in the morning." He takes his potions and says, "Thanks Zanderallen."

Sid heads to the catacombs and then heads home after getting a selection of cheeses, meats, breads, and more than a few bottles of wine.

Stohp thinks long and hard about the new contest but she just can't think of anything. She's only been in the woods once and it's probably totally different now. How is anyone supposed to name something they know so little about?

She played around with the idea of the opposite of "Crying Woods" for a bit, but nothing really sounded good at all.

DM Robert - "Do we need camping gear?"
Thursday July 26th, 2018 8:34:47 PM

Bartomus causes a minor stir by paying the newsie a silver piece.

Dirk reads the paper and pulls out a pipe back in the headquarters. Why am I wanting to call your headquarters the Baxter Building or Avengers Mansion?

Dorbin makes sure he has plenty of paper for writing.

Micah asks the pointed question, if they are possibly going to be spending up to 2 weeks in the woods, will they need camping equipment?

Stock is impressed with the councils food, but still wary of the counselors themselves.

Zanderallen passes out some healing potions to everyone.

Sid heads off to the catacombs and then to home.

Stohp now concentrates on naming the woods. remember you can look at the map to get a sense of things.

Rodrigo opens the door for you and as you file in he closes it. And then silently slips away into the evening.

When Micah asks camping gear Briadoc pops up from nowhere. "I'll say you need camping gear. Woods in general are not someplace you really want to sleep in the open in. And the Crying Wood, well I hear it's not all sentient anymore, but anyway that was a nasty place. If I hadn't developed that unguent we would have been killed for certain. Anyway, I can tell you from other times I was out and about on my botanical forays into the wilds camping gear is a necessary thing. Course you may need a pack pony if you want to be comfortable. Depends on if you want to just rough it with a bedroll. And you may want some pots to boil some water, maybe a spice packet or two if you run across any rabbits. Not sure though didn't see much in the way of small game in the forest. Oh, and you'll need food and water...though I imagine Micah could do some of that with some spells. That orc shaman had to keep doing that to keep the orcs fed. Good thing I insisted on my own supplies though."

Bartomus(Rod) HP: 34/34 AC: 13 (11+2); Perc+7;Heal+8

Bartomus nodded to Dirk with a "sure keep it" as he marveled over his new armor.

"Thanks Zander, thanks a lot." Bartomus set the two potions next to his armor. He listened to the discussion and started to answer about camping equipment, when Briadoc made it very clear they needed equipment.

"We need probably two large tents, not like the ones of my youth, but tents that can sleep a group of us - taurs included." Bartomus turned away from the armor and towards Briadoc and Micah. He nodded as Briadoc talked. "Suspect we need to make a list, then a few of us go about purchasing these things. I am game for a trip down below. Need to get an adventurer's kit, thinking we do need a couple of pack animals if we are going to have tents, food, pots, and such."

"I'll come with you Bart. I'm doubting we'll be able to make use of large tents. How about one each for you and Stohp and then the rest of us share...that leaves...". Stock counts on his fingers for a moment and then says, "5 two man tents. We'll add a pair of pack animals...donkeys or mules or something. Some rations...Waterskins..."

Stock continues muttering for a few minutes, not writing anything down but trying his best to memorize the list. He then accompanies Bart for the last minute shopping.

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:48/48 CMD:15]

When Briadoc mentions all the gear that's needed, Dorbin quietly says, "I lived on the streets for years with just the clothes on my back, I think I can sleep under the stars for a time. In fact, I look forward to it. As for the food, though, I guess we'll need to pack some of that in because I'm not too sure about what we can eat and what we can't eat out there, and I can't magically create any kind of food, myself."

Micah (John) HP: 52/52 AC: 24/12/24) CMD:18

Micah suppresses a smile a Briadoc's suggestions.

"I am not sure we need all of that. For certain, I will get some extra rope and climbing gear in case we encounter hazardous terrain. It is always better to not rely on magic when possible, so trail rations and water. Also, mapping supplies. A compass. Paint and colored string for trail marking."

Action to words, he goes out with whoever wishes to join him to obtain those items and things other have identified.

Dirk thanks Bartomus with an exuberant, but heartfelt sincerity.

Dirk watches all of the excitement about camping gear and speaks up. "I won't need a tent. I prefer to sleep outdoors with my bedroll. It's an old habit of mine; I'd rather have something get me while I see it coming, than to be surprised."

Dirk's face twists up into a smirk and then he shrugs it off.

I also admit that I prefer to smoke my pipe, and smoking a pipe inside a tent is always a dangerous thing to attempt.

DM Robert - "I'd rather have something get me while I see it coming, than to be surprised."
Saturday July 28th, 2018 10:34:01 AM

Bartomus makes plans to outfit the safari.

Stock seems of the same mind as Bartomus.

Dorbin is more philosophical about the camping trip.

Micah opts to get better prepared.

Zanderallen also decides to pack and pick up a few extra items.

Stohp jumps up and runs out, eager to submit her idea for a name for the woods.

Dirk points out the hazards of sleeping in a tent, possibly remember all those stories he heard as a youth about things walking around outside the tent.

The party gets a restful night of sleep. That morning they head to the docks. They notice a man standing besides several bags of goods on dock 2. "Hey there over here!" He waves to the party. He appears to be in his mid 30's, fit, but not necessarily good looking. You realize that is probably because of several years of working on the lake all day long. The sun can do terrible things to the skin and water reflects a good deal back so it's a double whammy.

"My name's Rick, the turtle over yonder is James." He offers his hand to you. He's obviously heard about you and seems excited to see you. He points to a two people sitting nearby. That there is Eddie and that other one is Charlie. They are my crew. Understand we're going to ferry you guys over to the woods and wait on you."

He indicates the goods nearby. "These here are your supplies. Didn't want to load them without you first looking them over." Assuming you check things out, you find that what you assumed were bags are really backpacks. There are 8 backpacks of trail rations, enough in each bag for 2 weeks. There are also 3 canteens of water each. Not enough for 2 weeks but rather 2 days. Hopefully you will be able to find potable water in the woods because packing enough water for 2 weeks is really not feasible.

The crew moves toward the turtle offering to carry your provisions.

Immediately, Dirk walks over and shakes the man's hand with a smile. "Thank you sir, you have done an honorable job bringing these supplies over." He makes motions by patting his pockets and then checking his decoy money bag and turns it upside down, revealing it is empty.

"I'm sorry, my good man. I don't have any coin to give you in appreciation. Just know that you have my undying gratitude for your kindness and selflessness." Dirk pats the man on the back as he takes his supplies and begins to organize them on the ground just a few yards away.

Dirk relaxes with his pipe stuck between his teeth as he leans against one of the old, splintered wooden dock posts. "What a beautiful view." he mutters to himself.

He has his book in one hand and his quill in the other as he sketches the layout of the area and writes down some of the more interesting things here. These would definitely be going into a song and a wild, exaggerated tale that would undoubtedly earn him some silver.

"So, we didn't get the mules, well ok I guess, maybe next trip. " Bartomus followed behind and when he saw Dirk didn't tip the man, Bartomus fished into his pouch and pulled out two gold. "Thank you, and I hope that you are here when we return."

Bartomus nodded and smiled, then took a step onto the gangplank that lead to the shell of the turtle. "I don't think this will ever get all that old."

Stohp experimentally lifts her bag, then sighs. It's Taur sized and contains a Taur sized amount of food. She is not, however, as strong as your standard Taur. This'll be a pain. Still no one else is going to carry her food for her.

"Mules probably wouldn't be that useful. We'll be fighting through the underbrush not walking down nice paths. We'll be faster on foot with just backpacks."

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:48/48 CMD:15]

Emily Jasmine, the cat, approaches the bags before the others can pick them up. She sniffs the bags, then rubs up against them. She watches as people pick up their bags. Ignoring the gangplank, she suddenly jumps across the space and onto the back of the turtle. She takes up a place near the rear of the turtle where she can oversee the rest of the boat, then lies down and starts taking a bath, apparently ignoring the water all around.

Dorbin shrugs and picks up a bag, lost in thought as he boards the turtle boat.

He grabs a pack and takes a place on James back.

When the opportunity presents itself he lays out the additional equipment he obtained. "I am no explored, so i tried to guess what we might need, he explains as he reveals the following items.

Mapcase with ink, pen, and parchment
Compass
200’ hempen rope
Grappling hook
Climbing gear
Colored twine for marking
Pint of red paint
pints of oil (2)
Machetes (2)
Whistles for signaling (9) (one for each Shield as well as one for Rick)

Stock gives a quick introduction to Rick, shaking his hand and delivering a barely polite, "Stock." To the other two hands, he gives a friendly half-smile nod and grunt.

His armor is off and lashed to his pack. Last time I did this I worried all night about falling off and swimming in my armor. Not this time. I'll get suited up when we land.

He finds a spot suitably close to the back of the boat and fairly near Emily Jasmine. He does his best to ignore the cat. "We should not need it but I also have the left over Crying Woods lotion from last time. I guess we will find out if the sentience in the wood is really gone."

He fishes one of his stones out of a pouch and begins carefully polishing it and removing its edges.

Sid finds his package on the dock and, if he has all twelve bird tokens will pay someone 2g to run four of them to the Split Arrow to Ellie. After that he stashes them in his handy haversack and says, "Alright guys, I bought some bird tokens to make sure we could contact the Float if need be. I also have the group's haversack so if we need to load it will supplies, that are not pointing and will break the bag. We can do that. Also if we need more water to carry we can just put it in here. Oh, thank you Micah." Sid takes the safety whistle and puts it around his head.

Supplies look to be in very good order, thank you. As soon as we all get on board I think we can be off." Zanderallen tests the packs, making sure to grab one of the heavier human sized packs and stows his gear on Jame's back. "Well Rick, have you been out since everything changed? Seen anything different on the shore?" Zanderallen asks once they have shoved off and Rick appears less busy.
