DM Robert - "I guess we will find out if the sentience in the wood is really gone."
Monday July 30th, 2018 9:43:36 PM

Dirk checks his supplies.

Bartomus laments the lack of mules and tries to tip Rick.

Stohp worries about having to pack in all her food stuff.

Dorbin boards the boat shortly after Emily has already crossed and claimed her space.

Micah reveals some last minute supplies.

Stock greets Rick and the crew.

Sid has a special delivery as a young man comes running up with a package. The young man agrees to take the items to the Split Arrow.

Zanderallen greets Rick and the crew.

Rick puts a hand up at Bartomus's offered tip. "Already been paid, and generously for what amounts to ferry work and waiting." Perception 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { You note Eddie and Charlie seemed dejected at the refusal for a tip. } He eyes the packs. "Didn't bring your supplies in, I'm a turtle man. We do the fishing and what not around here. Someone else brought in the supplies, gave some for us to since I understand we're gonna be waiting on you."

Another young man runs up, he is out of breath. "Delivery for Micah the cleric. Delivery for Micah the cleric." He hands a squarish package about 16 inches by 8 inches (and about 2 inches thick) to Micah. If Micah opens the package Highlight to display spoiler: { it is a chess set, the board is folded in half (so you would open it up and flip it over to play on it) and latched, if you open it inside you will find a recessed area for each chess piece.}

Rick escorts everyone on board. "This here's James. He's reliable. Don't know how old he is, they say turtles live a long time. Supposedly you can count the rings on their shells to see how old they are." Eddie and Charlie help out with the loading.

Rick gets everyone settled. "Trip will take better part of the day, even though it's the closest shore. Find yourself somewhere cozy. Been fishing this lake for a long time. Can say we've avoided the shore, sometimes we'll get near but it's right spooky seeing tree limbs moving around without there no wind. But lately well, nothing. Seen birds flying over head landing on them trees. Imagine there's a whole lot of insects been breeding in them woods for who knows how long."

To pass the time Eddie tells some stories about how in Plateau City kids would running when the Ice Cream man comes around. And then tells a story/joke about a family barbecue where his dad was drunk.

Towards 3 pm you sight the shore line. There is not much to speak of in the way of sandy shores and welcoming landing sights. At best you can get a few feet of shore where there are no trees. The trees themselves appear normal.
Knowledge Nature 10 Highlight to display spoiler: { You note that this is old growth forest. Old-growth forests tend to have large trees and standing dead trees, multilayered canopies with gaps that result from the deaths of individual trees, and coarse woody debris on the forest floor.}

Here is a picture of what you see along the shore line.

Bartomus watched Rick waive off the tip and caught the disappointment in his crew members. He moved along and listened to the description of the trees. Something was different, he thought to himself. Very different.

As he found his place on top of James' shell, he kept his eyes out for Eddie and Charlie. When he found an opportunity to be near the two of them, he slipped both of them one of the two coins he had originally offered to Rick. "Shhh, keep a good watch out for us, ok? No early running and such. The Shields and the Float are counting on you and us."

After leaving them with a nod, a wink and a finger pressed to his lips, he settled in and watched the Float slowly get smaller and smaller and the trees that lined the shore get bigger and bigger. It was an old forest, ancient even. "May be some tough going in all of that. We need to find a walk-able path, or we are going to be slashing our way through that for ever and not make much in the way of distance."

Dirk takes in the wonder and splendor of the shoreline. The trees tower so high that Dirk has to crane his neck up to even attempt to see the tops. He shakes his head and begins to sketch furiously into his book, taking in every single detail as best as he can.

"I've never seen something so beautiful and chaotic at the same time. It's as if the land is being attacked by trees all around."

He smiles at the thought and writes that bit down in his book. Then, his writing stops dead and his eyes widen as he mutters softly, "You don't think ents live in there?"

Stock spends some time nodding off and then seems to come to high alert when the shore comes into view. "Don't know about ents, Dirk. My guess is they are a fairy tail. Last time we were here there were these giant beetles though. They pretty much carve their way through some of the smaller vegetation. Don't know why the forest didn't attack them. You spend much time among nature? or are you a city boy?"

Before the trip.

Micah smiled at Dirk's interest in the mapping kit. "If you are willing to map are journey, then I suppose it must be for you," he replies as he offers it to their newest member.

"What have we here?" exclaims Micah at the strange package. "Thank you, much," he says as he quickly retrieves a silver and discretely hands it to the messenger. He quickly opens it and is surprised to find it contains a fine wooden chess set. He checks the package for a note or signature. Finding none, he stows it in his pack for later inspection.

At the shore.

As the turtle comes in view of the shore, Micah rises to get a better look. He has been on shore once before, but the magnitude of the trees continue to take his breath away. Wordlessly, he watches as they approach, an expression of wonder clearly on his face.

Tuesday July 31st, 2018 9:16:09 PM

Bartomus pays off the Murphy brothers. When land he sighted he wonders how much trail breaking they will have to do.

Dirk contemplates the forest, and wonders about its dangers.

Stock contemplates the forest and questions the abilities of Dirk.

Micah gifts Dirk with the map making set, and in turn receives a strange gift.

Dorbin and Emily sleep on the turtle's back.

Zanderallen looks around for orcs and such but spies none on shore. He can hear birds way up in the tree tops though.

Stohp is unimpressed with nature.

Sid decides he wants to keep an eye out for some particular trees. You will need to make knowledge nature rolls as you progress through the forest. This could be important and aid in map-making, as in section of yew here, etc.

After traversing the shore line for a bit you come across a place with some shallow water and a bit of a shore line. picture

Map This is important, it's a new map for Lakeview.

Rick eyes it and then turns to you. "How's this look? Or we could keep going along northward, that would take us to the where a river feeds into the lake. Course it's right up next to that escarpment as well. Guess it depends on where you want to start." Rick looks to you expectantly.

Charlie adds, "Yeah but before you go we was told we had to wait for you to come back. We needs some sort of signal or we'll need to be real close to shore a lot to spot you." He eyes the woods somewhat wearily.

Please note, I've updated the map and put a scale guide in.

Bartomus voices the opinion that they should travel up the lake more to the mouth of the river. He scans the shore as he goes....as long as their is light.

Stohp votes to go toward the river as well.

Dirk remembers happier times.

Stock vote to go northward.

Micah agrees to go northward. He shows Stock his present, a chess set. A fine wooden chess set, one side elves carved of rosewood and the other side dwarves carved of ironwood. All of the elven pieces have been vandalized in some way (eg: mustaches drawn on, a few ears cut short).

Dorbin sleeps.

Zanderallen opts to go to the mouth of the river.

Sid tries to remember what he can about the Crying Wood. Seems maybe he remembers a bit of legend many years ago there was an adventuring band called the Crimson Shields of Hope. They were based in the Float and had several adventures in the Crying Woods. They lost several members to the woods. Jella's father was a member of the Crimson Shields of Hope and gave his life to become some sort of spirit guardian to counter the malevolent spirit of the woods. At one point in time there, near the end of the chronicles that he can remember, the Crimson Shields were off to fight Green Dragons that apparently lived in the Crying Wood.

The journey northward takes the remainder of the day and night.
map

The mouth of the river is a swirling mass of water and mud (think of where the Missouri river meets the Mississippi River). While clearly there is a large amount of water running into the lake from the northern river, the current is treacherous because there is a smaller out-going river running due west along the escarpment. West and somewhat north of you looms the escarpment. It is a jagged unwelcome site of ragged stone jutting upward maybe 70 feet. And on top you can see towering trees that seem to look down the escarpment, as if on guard for anything trying to make it's way upward.

"This here is as far as I go." Rick announces. He manages to put in close to shore. You'll have to make a leap for it Acrobatics 10 or you are going to get wet and land in waist deep water. "James ain't been up that river and even though it looks navigable it does have a strong current. We'd loose a lot in the way of agility for trying to keep going up stream."

You are at the Red hexigon/dot on the map. There is no game trail. Consider movement to be through difficult terrain. I'll need a marching order and if you wish to do trail breaking or just walk slowly around and through things. Trail breaking would make returning quicker.

Who's not looking at the map... you can only exit to the east.

Bartomus leaps across to shore. While there is no trial it's not like a tropical jungle where you have to chop through vines every few feet. However, it is fairly thick with years of leaves somewhat decomposed. The occasional sapling trying to fight for light and water against the towering trees that seem everywhere. You move about fairly easily though.

Stohp jumps across and adjusts her pack. (3 waterskins, 4lbs each, backpack 2lbs, trail rations 1lb/day for normal sized, being large..1.5lb/day so 21lbs. So for what you were provided free 35lb pounds of gear.)

Dorbin jumps across.

Micah jumps across and then puts on his armor.

Stock jumps and lands into the water. After pulling himself ashore he begins putting on his armor.

Zanderallen jumps across and sets to with setting up a marching order. The northern river is indeed large enough to be navigable as it looks easily to be over 100 yards wide through here. Sense Motive 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {You don't think the Turtle James should have had any problem going up river, perhaps Rick just didn't want to leave the lake.}

Sid jumps ashore and calls out about being on the lookout for green dragons.

The party heads inward perhaps 100 yards and then begins to walk north paralleling the river. You immediately notice that the temperature has dropped maybe 5 degrees. Probably because of the shade from the towering trees. There is a light mist on the ground. Undoubtedly from the morning and being so near the river, but it is patchy and not really any kind of hindrance. You can hear the churning waters of the river off to the west.

Fortunately for today there is nothing really out of the ordinary. At least to your way of thinking since it's your first day in the forest.

Survival Who would have thunk that a dwarf would be best for this role. But Stock with the aid of several others manages to pick up some wild berries and mushrooms to add to the food stocks for the day. He manages to point out enough food and water supplies that your rations are not deducted for this day. Stock also seems to manage to always find the easiest path through the woods.[/i]

Knowledge nature Stock is on fire. The wilderness seems to agree with him. Stock points out a variety of trees on the path. The area you are in appears to be mostly softwood trees, spruce, pine, fir, larch, birch, and hemlock.

Knowldege Geography Amazingly Zanderallen manages to keep track of where they are and oriented. In other words, he takes the map kit and draw out very accurately the area you have been through. Thus you are not lost and created a fairly detailed map for future reference.

It's a long day of hiking. You manage to travel (normal movement is 3mph over normal terrain, as you are picking your way, I'll allow 8 hours of movement for today (because of the dark, see below), so you've gone... 12 miles. While you had sufficient sunlight to navigate from morning till about 1pm as the sun head further west, you make a discovery. This close to the river, once the sun passes it's zenith it becomes obsured by the trees and escarpment due west. In essence you are at this point in the shadow of a small mountain. And being still fairly close to the river - within earshot - you are pretty much still at the base of the escarpment. After 3pm it is fairly dark for you, and you will need to have torches or some form of light to continue.

You find a fairly level area to set up a camp. Also with the survival role(s) made you are able to pick up numerous branches and twigs from the ground as you walk along. Thus you have plenty of firewood.

The group contemplates on the days finds so far:
1-Spruce is the standard material used in soundboards for many musical instruments, including guitars, mandolins, cellos, violins, and the soundboard at the heart of a piano and the harp.
2-Pine wood is widely used in high-value carpentry items such as furniture, window frames, panelling, floors, and roofing, and the resin of some species is an important source of turpentine.
3-Fir is largely unsuitable for construction. However, it can be used for medicinal purposes. Fir is taken by mouth for respiratory tract pain and swelling (inflammation), colds, cough, bronchitis, fever, and sore mouth and throat. It is also taken for muscle and nerve pain, tendency toward infection, and tuberculosis.
4-Larch wood is valued for its tough, waterproof and durable qualities. Top quality knot-free timber is in great demand for building yachts and other small boats, for exterior cladding of buildings, and interior paneling.
5-Birch is another wood not used much in lumber but does have medicinal values. Birch-tar (made from the bark) is waterproof; it was used as a glue on, for example, arrows, and also for medicinal purposes. Fragrant twigs of silver birch are used in saunas to relax the muscles.
6-Hemlock is used for standard construction purposes, box crates, framing, etc.

I now need a watch system, ie who's on watch for when to when? You will have darkness from 4pm to 6 am. Do you set a campfire? Once you establish watch each person on watch will have to make a perception roll for their watch. Be sure to mention if you have dark vision or are using some feat boost like hearing instead of vision (if you are human and 'blind' at night.).

Darkness looms.

As the dusk falls and the night takes hold Sid tells tales that he learned from Ellie, her father and the books he read. The two or three he shares over dinner and the early evening are macabre tales of unhonored fairies and malicious boggards. His stark and serious elven face, illuminated by the camp fire lends a stark shade of truth to his words as he finishes.

"Well, just wake me for the last shift and I'll have breakfast for you," he says after he finishes and takes his blankets and rolls up with his right arm free and able to draw his short sword if need be.

Late in the night he wakes to find it is his turn at watch and drinks some water. He backs up into a spot he saw earlier, just outside the firelight and will watch until dawn's break. When it seems the night has passed he will fry some bacon and eggs, with a parcel of wild veg they found the previous day. Not so much and to be a large breakfast, but enough to use two strips of bacon, or jerky, an egg or two, and the fresh veg to make a good breakfast. Sid also remembers to double the portions for the taurs. It's...'eh'.

Stohp follows along, not really much help in navigating the wild. She's never really been one for wandering the wilderness. Still she resolves to do more to help the next day.

As the party makes camp and discuss watch order Stohp puts her two cents in. "We should set 4 watches of 2 people each. There's 8 of us so it should work out just fine,. Each watch is 2 hours and we stay her for 10, that'll get us till morning and give everyone 8 hours of rest. I'll take first watch with whoever."

Stohp has no darkvision or low light vision. She does her best to keep her ears open though and make sure nothing enters the ring of firelight (16 to keep watch).

His eyes adjusted and he could see beyond the ring. He gave thought to the day ahead and the fact that they needed to find something of greater importance to the Float Timber would be good, it could be used and made into things. But, they needed more. He worked his way in slow circles around the camp and the fire trying to see into the distance.

Stock doesn't tire easily but after breaking trail the entire day, he feels it. He is happy to sit while the others fuss with setting up camp. Usually it is not easy for him to relax while others work...this time it's different though.

As a result, when Sid starts telling his story, Stock begins nodding off. By the end, he thinks he got the gist of it...although there's no telling how much he missed.

"Wake me up in the middle of the night. I'll be feeling a bit more awake after some shut eye." He promptly turns over in his bedding and falls asleep.

As promised, when he wakes up for his watch he is feeling better. He grabs his handaxe and begins cleaning and sharpening it to bring it back to form from the previous day's hacking at brush.

Micah has always been an early riser so he chooses to take fourth watch with Sid. Content to sit in the dark and listen, he keeps his magically illuminated mace under a cloth within easy reach. Should he here anything, a single motion will provide him both a light source and a weapon.

During their watch, Micah quietly comments to Sid, "I wonder if anything or anyone else has realized these woods are accessible now. Last time we were here, except for those orcs with the lotion, only the beetles could inhabit these woods."

DM Robert - It was not a dark and stormy night
Monday August 6th, 2018 8:31:43 PM

The party settles down, though Sid's bedtime stories are rather unsettling.

Dorbin and Stohp stand the first watch which passes largely uneventfully. It's a quiet night, however you do hear the sounds of crickets in the woods now.

Second watch and Bartomus is all about it. He identifies an owl and some bats swooping around in the dark. That would mean there are probably small rodents and the like about to feed the owls, and probably more insects for the bats. Zanderallen does hear much except the crickets.

Third watch is a little rough. Stock starts by sharpening his hand axe, certainly not a quiet sound. In fact it is a little loud in the quiet of the forest. Fortunately there doesn't seem much else up and about during this time of night. Dirk having made no perception roll is somewhat lackadaisical in his approach to keeping watch.

Forth watch is quiet, which is good because Micah and Sid seem somewhat distracted in the morning. While Sid tells everyone that he has 'fry some bacon and eggs, with a parcel of wild veg' everyone knows that eggs aren't trail rations, bacon yes, cheese, yes, possibly some hard tack bread of some sort, but no eggs.

Dawn breaks and the party eats breakfast. It is moderately quiet, a few bird chirping off in the distance.

DM Robert - "I think we're supposed to map the whole forest."
Tuesday August 7th, 2018 8:32:52 PM

item...the forest doesn't move around...at least not anymore. item...mapping the whole forest would take a long time.

Perception: The party seems to work well together. Dorbin clearly seems on top of things today but the others all help out. After several hours of walking you find a trail.

Survival: Sid calls out pointing to tracks on the trail. Dirk and a few others in the party help and it is determined that the trail may have once been made by the giant beetles. However, there are faint tracks going to and fro on the trail. These tracks appear to be the tracks of lizard folk. None of the tracks appears fresh though.

Knowledge Geography: Sid again takes the lead with most notably Stock's help. It appears the trail is running east-west. So to the west would lead back to the river.

Perception: As you examine the trail Bartomus spots something suspicious westward on the trail perhaps 20 yards distance.

Knowledge Nature: Sid scans westward and sees a gnarled vine, as thick as a man’s arm and bearing hand shaped leaves, convulses across the ground in an unnatural slither on either side of the trail. It is 2 assassin vines!

Forest map

You can avoid the vines entirely or you can clear them from the trail.

"What's that, up ahead, something doesn't look right," Bartomus said over his shoulder as he fished for a bullet for his sling. He took four strides forward and focused his attention on the spot that didn't look right.

Looking at that spot 20 yards or so in the distance - which seems closer to us than what I assume is the symbol for the vines on the map. If it is something different Bart sends a bullet at it with a roll of 23 for 4 pts damage.

Zanderallen draws sword and shield advancing at a measured pace to give casters and others time to make preparations. Unless stopped and as long as the others are keeping with him, he approaches to within charge distance, drops his visor, and rushes the nearest plant, the flames of his sword shooting forth. If no one is with him he stops halfway to the vines and calls for them to join him.

Bartomus steps up a bit and lets loose with a sling bullet hitting vine 2 for 4 points of damage.

Dorbin follows behind Bartomus. He can see the plants now that they have been pointed out to him.

Zanderallen moves forward and charges! Apparently his visor obscures his vision for his swing is wild.

Micah pulls out his wand and blesses the party.

Stock moves forward searching his memory for the assassin vine. They are immune to electricity and for being a plant resistant to fire and cold. Also they are mobile. They can move around, although slowly.

Sid you cannot move and rapid shot, rapid shot is a full attack action, you don't need to move to shoot at vine 2. You may want to consider repositioning as currently two large figures are in front of your line of sight and that will give the vines cover (-4 to hit) fires two arrows at vine 1. Unfortunately both shots miss.

Stohp asks the party to just consider distance weapons.

Dirk apparently stands in awe of his first combat encounter.

The vines:

Dirk takes out his crossbow and fires at one of the bushes. Remarkably he hits!

Stohp moves forward.

Bartomus steps forward and flings another bullet, hitting the bush. ps that's a ranged attack not a melee attack, don't want to confuse the DM and make him think you closed with the plant.

Dorbin moves and casts a minor spell. It hits the bush/vine resoundingly. Moved you to L8 this gets you around the 'taurs and a clear line of sight.

Stock moves forward swinging his flail. However he doesn't come near to hitting it. You will also provoke, they have a 10 foot reach, but I will put that on the vine's turn.

Micah runs forward contemplating the benefits of having a ranged weapon.

Zanderallen slices the plant most effectively. Leaves fall and lesser branches with them. Sorry your fire damage is not enough to overcome the resistance

Sid fires an arrow and hits the vine/bush as well.

Bartomus fires another sling bullet. Unfortunately it is a miss.

Dorbin fires a blob of acid at vine 2, he misses. Unfortunately the -4 to hit with ranged weapons when firing into melee applies to magical ranged attacks as well.

Zanderallen hacks at the dead vine, not realizing it is dead. But since it's dead it starts to burn when his swords chops into it.

Dirk shoots at vine 2 nailing it squarely in the sensitive parts.

Stock feels the rage of the barbarian at this infuriating plant. His flail lashes out sending branches, leaves, and goo flying.

Micah moves up and gives the vine salad another bash for good measure.

Another possibility is if the previous evil sentience was using them to rid itself of the possible lizard folk rumored to be in the forest.}

Dorbin offers the opinion that the party should continue northward.

Stock seems to think the druid should be able to answer questions about these vines. He readies himself to head northward.

Micah shudders at the thought that plants in the forest could try to kill you. Good thing Briadoc is not here, he may want a cutting or nut, or whatever it is that botanist use to try to grow plants anew. Micah seems to think the party should head north.

DM Robert - "What radiates magic?"
Tuesday August 14th, 2018 8:41:27 PM

Bartomus considers Stock's comment about the vines, but is quickly distracted by everyone's preparations to travel northward once more.

Stohp starts stomping along. (Technically no you can't use the knoweldges untrained).

Stock gets going on the trek northwward.

Dorbin mentions "that thing radiating magic". He studies it briefly but cannot accurately determine what it's purpose could be sorry you did not role high enough on the caster level check. It could be some sort of protective magic, or some magic designed to turn someone away in confusion.

Micah perks up at Dorbin's comment. He asks what radiates magic. Here I need to give some benefit of the doubt, technically Sid and Dirk were searching for arrows when they stumbled across it. However, neither of them seem to have made the required rolls wherein I posted "Dirk and Sid search the area and miraculously find all their bolts/arrows with minimal damage. They also find a strange object...
Profession/craft 20: Knowledge nature 20: Knowledge arcane:"
" Technically they should have rolled their perceptions and then TOLD the party what they spotted. THAT would have then allowed others to make the other craft/knowledge rolls. However Sid did not post and Dirk being new probably did not realize that needed to be done. When I post something under your character's information, that means your character gets to make the roll, not everyone. However, all of you have made perceptions because you are back on the trek, note not trail as you were headed north.

Dirk gets on the trail but since he did roll a general perception not related to the one under his post...Dirk mentions seeing something hanging in the trail about 50 feet further west from where the assassin vines.

Zanderallen agrees with Stock's reasoning about the lizard folk and then does a double take with the mention of the item in the trail.

The group heads back to the trail to see what's really up. Hanging from a low branch over the trail you find what appears to be a small intricately carved wreath of leaves. The craftsmanship is remarkable. The entire carving would fit into the palm of your hand (a medium sized hand) and you can clearly see that there is a fibrous (woven) rope between the tree and the hollow of the wooden wreath.

Bartomus, Knowledge nature or spellcraft 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { You think it is some sort of druidic totem magic, if you roll a really good spellcraft you might learn more. }

Dorbin confirms it radiates magic but he cannot really determine for certain the purpose of the item.

Do you want to search the area more, if so how far in what direction(s)?
Do you return to your northward trek?

DM Robert - "Hey everyone, take a look at whatever that is down the trail. What is that?"
Wednesday August 15th, 2018 8:22:10 PM

I'm going 'out of order' but it will make more sense that way.

Dirk, while looking for his arrows, pointed out the strange item hanging from a branch over the trail. That is the item that was 50 feet further west from where the vines attacked. There is no other item in your immediate vicinity.

Stohp waves everyone back and checks the area for traps. She finds none. She does note that the 'rope' the item is hanging from is actually woven from fibrous plants. She does note that the object appears redish in color, and realizes it is carved from cocobolo a very rare and exotic wood.

For the wood workers, if they choose to share, Highlight to display spoiler: {Cocobolo is a tropical hardwood. Usually, only the heartwood is used; it is typically orange or reddish-brown, often with darker irregular traces weaving through the wood. The sapwood (not often used) is a creamy yellow, with a sharp boundary with the heartwood. The heartwood changes color after being cut. The heartwood is dense; some cocobolo has a specific gravity of over 1.0, and will sink in water. Due to its density and hardness, even a large block of the cut wood will produce a clear musical tone if struck. It is used to make musical instruments, such as oboes and clarinets, for its "warm, rich palette". Cocobolo can be polished to a lustrous, glassy finish. It has also been used to make necks of guitars. Because it is so water resistant it could be used to make sword/knife handles, and other wood based weapons.}

Dorbin looks it over and says it radiates magic but can't figure out what it does. For craftsmanship alone he thinks its worth 20-30 gold.

Micah looks over the strange carved miniature wreath. Alas he cannot determine what it is. It radiates faintly of the enchantment and evocation schools. It could be some sort of protective magic, or some magic designed to turn someone away in confusion.

Bartomus looks over the carved wreath when Sid skips by and pulls the item free of the rope, with a mighty tug. Sid then prepares to head north again.

Dirk smiles as he rolls up the map and places it back into his kit and places the kit into his pack.

DM Robert - "Somebody put it up there for a purpose."
Thursday August 16th, 2018 8:51:12 PM

Bartomus warns everyone to be on the alert and to be careful. He is of the opinion that the item is pretty special.

Stohp recommends leaving the wreath where it was, which means it needs to be rehung.

Stock tells everyone that the wreath is made from a pretty rare and special wood.

Sid wanders around on the 'game trail' and notes there are some old lizard folk tracks, maybe 2 days old.
There are many tall trees, it is impossible really to see which might be taller simply because with all the branches and obscured vision to leaves and low light there is no way to see to the top.

Dorbin is ready to take the northward trail.

Micah recommends they leave the wreath. He asks Dirk if the map is well documented. The Cocobowl trees are not in the area, the wreath is made from the wood of the tree.

Zanderallen also says to leave the wreath where it is.

Dirk marks the map.

I'm assuming you rehang the wreath. It was never really stated. The party ventures forth into the jungle/forest. Using your roles from 2 posts ago. The group manages to traverse 8 more miles of forest. The map is well documented and periodic river checks remain good. Stoph and Dirk keep a wary eye out for weird things, but it's unfamiliar forest so what is weird and what is natural? At leas nothing is jumping out at you and trying to attack you. Stock finds several bushes growing blue berries and some fruit that looks like pears.

Sid and Stock spend a few minutes talking and pointing at the treetops. After a moment, Sid removes most of his gear and begins climbing one of the trees...like only an elf can. His hope is to get up as high as possible to see if there are any landmarks or clearings near by.

Sid climbs up a tree. It takes a while. When he gets to top he sees the beginnings of an overcast sky. May rain tonight, may rain tomorrow. Looking outward he sees....green. A sea of green. A sea of green gently blowing leaves. The tree limb he is on sways greatly with his added weight. It's not like you are LOTR elves and can walk on snow. Sid comes down slowly and reports what he finds.

There are no camp stories tonight. Everyone seems wary and introspective.

First watch Dorbin and Stohp. Dorbin doesn't notice anything of note. Stohp keeps a wary listen and detects nothing out of the ordinary. At least the ordinary of the wilderness. Some crickets the occasional hooting of an owl is all she hears.

Second watch, Bartomus and Zanderallen. Zanderallen is perfectly oblivious to anything going on. The glowing coals of the campfire pop occasionally as sap heats up and releases. Bartomus is alert. Fortunately nothing seems out of place.

Third watch, Dirk and Stock. Dirk idle watches the glowing coals, fascinated by the inner play of fire. Stock is vigilant. A few times in the night he thinks he may have heard something far off in the woods. Perhaps once of those large beetles moving about. Whatever it is, it is in the far distance and does not seem to be approaching at all.

Forth watch, Sid and Micah. Micah seems asleep, or perhaps deep in trance praying to Domi. Sid doesn't mind, he's got this. Just before he decides to start breakfast he hears the snap of a twig nearby. Even as he grabs his bow and prepares to give alarm. Three Lizard Folk come racing through camp. He notes they are dressed in loin cloths made from woven leaves, they have arm bands of vines, and wear necklaces bearing 1 leaf.

The first one races through camp and touches a sleeping Bartomus. If you understand Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: {"I count coup."}

The second one races through camp and pats Sid on the head. If you understand Draconic: Highlight to display spoiler: {"I count coup."}

Sid can hear them still racing through the forest in a south/southwest direction.

Sid thinks if he has heard of any lizardfolk fun additions to the tradition of "counting coup" that he should know about as he makes tea and breakfast and will at that at the end. "Lady and gentlemen, many tribes and communities live in the wilds have developed various forms of 'tag'. Basically when someone is in your territory and camping, you, as the home team, if you will, raid the intruder's camp and tap them whilst trying not to be tapped yourself. This 'tagging' demonstrates several important things:

1) That the home team knows where you are

2) How attentive the invaders are

3) How skills at attacking/defending each individual is"

Sid let's that sink in a bit, "It should be noted that this is a peaceful way to size up possible opponents, and even potential allies, and unfortunately we came up a bit short on that point. Now personally I feel that we need to scout where they went, but also I would love the chance to pay them back in kind." Sid's eyes twinkle, "and I am unsure of the tactical or strategic advantages of doing so, but I believe it would be FUN!"

"So... what are we doing? For that matter, what were they doing? Obviously this was a message or challenge of some sort but what?"

DM Robert - "counting coup"
Monday August 20th, 2018 8:21:58 PM

Sid recounts that three lizard folk ran through camp and touched party members. They then said in Draconic, 'I count coup'. He then goes into a brief lecture of the history of counting coup. This is largely from various barbarian tribes (on the human scale) and some non-human tribes.

Counting coup was the winning of prestige against an enemy. Warriors won prestige by acts of bravery in the face of the enemy, which could be recorded in various ways and retold as stories. Any blow struck against the enemy counted as a coup, but the most prestigious acts included touching an enemy warrior with the hand, bow, or coup stick and escaping unharmed. Touching the first enemy to die in battle or touching the enemy's defensive works also counted as coup. Counting coup could also involve stealing an enemy's weapons or horses tied up to his lodge in camp. Risk of injury or death was required to count coup.

Escaping unharmed while counting coup was considered a higher honor than being wounded in the attempt. A warrior who won coup was permitted to wear some form of token to indicate his/her act of bravery.

In some tribes it is an act by young warriors to prove their worth in battle. In some, as Sid indicated, it is was a sign that your being in the territory of the tribe has noted your presence.

Sid also recounts how the warriors were dressed, plant loin cloths, vines wrapped around their upper arms, a necklace with a carved leaf upon it. They did not have weapons in their hands.

Sense Motive 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {It is likely these were young lizard men maybe out to test or prove themselves.}

Bartomus and Stock easily track the path the racing lizard folk took. After passing through your camp they headed south, south-west. Then they abruptly turned west. They continued to race along and when they came to the river they dove in. The river at this area looks deep over 10 feet. There is no 'shore' rather a cut off bank.
knowledge Nature 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Lizard Folk are capable swimmers (having a swim speed) and can hold their breath underwater for a long time...by human standards, also the river of course is running southerly.}

The party is not sure how to proceed. Was this an attack or a warning, was it a challenge? Sid wants a little playful payback.

You could...
1) Continue as you were going heading northerly.
2) Try and back track the lizard folk and instead of seeing where they went, try to find out where they came from.
3) walk up or down river to see where they came out and try to track them from there. though really it would be easier to swim downstream rather than upstream but then that is what they may think you think, and therefore have swum back up river. That's one of those endless round and round arguments of how much do you think the enemy is planning ahead and trying to anticipate your actions.

Bartomus listened and as he did he was back on the plains with his adopted tribe, before the grove and before coming to the Float. "So they got their honor points, and sent us a lesson, because they got to each of us while we slept. So, Sid, how do we return the favor to our visitors? "

As he and Stohp moved to the river, he looked over the bank. [b]"They had to have swam away. Question is which way? They would expect us to follow after them...so, do you think it would be better to just continue northward, not giving them the satisfaction of worrying? Or, do we try to find the way they came at us?"

As he crouched down, he rubbed his chin. "Hey, anyone have a way to hide a glue spell near our next camp? I mean, if they stuck in place ?"

We should see if we can manage to catch them if they come visiting again. Or at least give them a smart rap for their troubles.", Zanderallen grins as he losses his sap in its pouch.

Stohp shakes her head. "If they're swimming home they likely swam to us as well. Their backtrail likely just leads to a different spot in the river where they can climb out on this side." She pauses then. "Wait, if we find where they came in and where they left presumably their villiage would be some where near both spots. Perhaps in the middle on the other side? It's worth trying at least."

Bartomus contemplates what to do. He seems to think a little payback of some sort might be nice.

Micah thinks a little non-permanent damage might be satisfactory. He thinks they party should follow the Lizard Folk.

Sid rambles but gives not clear directional choice.

Stock thinks the party should just continue the northward trek.

Dorbin thinks the party should continue their northward journey.

Zanderallen thinks the party should head back south and check out the trail.

Stohp seems confused but thinks maybe following the trail the the three backwards might be worthwhile.

Dirk is strangely quiet.

The party is torn on what to do, and no clear consensus is available. The debate drags through breakfast. You note that it appears to be a humid day and the 'normal' light is even less. (When at the river you see that it is overcast). Obviously rain is in the forecast for sometime today.

As the debate wears on several party members roam a bit from camp. Bartomus looking for a private place to take a poop spots a large rock in the distance. It is notable because you really haven't seen rocks larger than a good throwing stone (for medium sized humans). But this stone seems to rise 20 feet or more from the forest floor.

Should you decide to investigate the stone, which in truth is about 500 yards from your camp, you will need to make perception, survival, knowledge nature, knowledge history, and/or alchemy.

Otherwise I need a consensus on your path, or maybe there's more clues at that rock...

He took his glave, dug his hole, filled it, cleaned up and pushed the dirt over it. The whole time he was starring at the stone. He looked about, and then looked back at the camp. He walked back to the camp, "Guys there is this standing stone, a giant standing stone, this way. I think we need to check it out."

He turned back towards the stone and started walking.

First we don't know if they went up river or down, then even if we guess right, there's a chance we don't catch the spot where they leave the river. Maybe the play is to set some light traps around the camp tonight to see if we can tag them when they come in to tag us."

DM Robert - Day 3
Wednesday August 22nd, 2018 8:28:44 PM

Bartomus leads the way to the stone. It is approximately 30 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 20 feet high (in irregular dimensions). Bartomus doesn't notice much else about the stone as he stares around the area. It has clearly served as a camp of some sort, there are lizard folk tracks everywhere. However, Bartomus sorts out that there are only 3 different tracks, just all over the place.

Stohp doesn't feel the importance to examining the rock but does notice several things around the rock. She too can tell that there was some sort of camp here. No fire though. There are some fish bones in one area. And wow, there are some weapons, 3 spears with stone heads, and one sling. The sling is made from some sort of fibrous plant weavings. She also finds three little travel pack of sorts with stuff she can't identify (food wise) some well carved rocks (more like nick knack sort of things).

Stock examines the rock carefully. It is a rock, but he notices numerous scratch marks and quickly works out that the rock can be climbed. The top of the rock is relatively flat. At least flat enough for a Minotaur to stretch out and have a nice napping place. There is evidence on top of the rock of some sort of fire, though not of wood, perhaps coal? Poking around the fire he determines that it was relatively small and that something was burned in the fire that was not coal or wood. Stock checks the travel pack that Stohp found and finds that there are some edible nuts, but more interesting is that there is some sort of mushroom. He identifies it as peyote, not something necessarily one would want to eat.

Dorbin takes in what has been learned so far and comes up with a possible answer. Vision Quest: Historically, a vision quest can be best described as a rite of passage practiced in some cultures. These rituals are performed to mark an important transition in life - a turning point. Most commonly, a vision quest is performed to mark the passage from childhood to puberty, or in other words, from adolescence to adulthood. Traditionally, a vision quest has a very strong shamanistic component. A vision quest usually lasts for two to four days and may involve long walks in nature, fasting, sleep deprivation, and sometimes some form of hallucinogenic.

Micah looks around but has little to add to what has been discovered thus far.

Zanderallen, like Stohp, sees little of importance in examining a rock.

Sid talks about setting a trap where they make camp tonight. While the group examines the rock and the 'lizard-folk' camp site. He holds up his hand signaling for quite. Did he just hear something in the woods. Yes, a ways off he thinks he can hear some one speaking in Draconic, but it is too far way to make out what is being said.

Dirk hangs back silently.

Sense Motive 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Gee you've found where the 3 lizard folk had their camp, however, more and more it appears they are youth's on some sort of rite of passage to adulthood vision quest/challenge. And it looks like they left their gear here. And it looks like they may be coming back.}

You have about 10-15 minutes before the 3 lizard folk return to camp. Do you wish to abandon the area, or hide? Roll stealth or take 10 on stealth, You may use this skill untrained (it's dex based for your adder).
Taking 10 - When your character is not in immediate danger or distracted, you may choose to take 10. Instead of rolling 1d20 for the skill check, calculate your result as if you had rolled a 10. For many routine tasks, taking 10 makes them automatically successful. Distractions or threats (such as combat) make it impossible for a character to take 10. In most cases, taking 10 is purely a safety measure—you know (or expect) that an average roll will succeed but fear that a poor roll might fail, so you elect to settle for the average roll (a 10). Taking 10 is especially useful in situations where a particularly high roll wouldn’t help.

If you want to hide your tracks/presence in the camp someone needs to make a survival 20 roll to remove traces of your presence.

If he gets it he stiffs it and is about to put it in his mouth, but stops when he hears the noise and automatically puts it in his Haversack. If he doesn't he tries without success to get it from Stoph until he hears the noise/sees them coming. He holds his hand up for pause and makes a series of gestures and a few low sounds, grimaces and then sighs.

"Company is coming people set it back like it was. I am hiding and anyone who can't should quietly depart. No talking about it." He tries to quickly put things back, but it doesn't seem pretty.

Stohp is not sure what to do. She is so unsure she doesn't even attempt to hide.

Dorbin tries to clean up the camp. And then climbs up on top of the rock and stretches out flat.

Stohp easily notes their confusion (sens motive 20) and their whispered conversation (perception 17). She also notes her allies less than stellar attempts at stealth (perception 27). Quickly she tries to cover for them before the lizardfolk think she's setting them up for an ambush.

"I am indeed one of the group you so skillfully counted coup on last night. As you saw there's more of us then me; I apologies for my fellows hiding, we felt it best not to approach you as such a large group lest you think we were attacking you and you're return moments after we found your camp was unexpected. I'll call them out of hiding so that we might talk openly without fear of treachery."

She turns and waves in the general direction of the party, trying to indicate they should come out without saying things in common the lizardfolk can't understand and might mistake for secret or treacherous commands.

Turning back around she continues, "The float is a city on the lake south of here. It is named so because it floats on the water like a boat. Long have it's people feared the woods and dared not to tread there. With with recent changes many feel that now is to time to explore the woods more fully and meet those that have long lived under it's boughs to share knowledge and trade. Only with the expert help of your tribe may we truly discover the riches and wonders of the wood." (Diplomacy 21, with the +5 that's 26 total).

Dirk gawks at the lizard folk. Fortunately he does so silently.

Bartomus shifts around making a slight noise. He draws a sling bullet and flings it out into the woods. It makes quite the clamor as it whooshes through leaves and solidly hits a tree trunk in the distance.
I'm not sure what you meant by using "a hideaway" I've not heard of it, if you are referring to the spell Sylvan Hideaway it is not in the core rule book and therefore not usable.

Micah stoically stands still.

Dorbin peeks over the edge of the rock, quietly. He tries to figure things out. He thinks they are going well.
So I looked it up, weirdly Linguistics are checks made for the written word it doesn't apply to speaking or listening to an unknown language. With your roll you could easily have read Draconic. What's weird is putting ranks in it allows you to learn to speak another language.

Stock keeps muttering.

Zanderallen scraps against the rock.

Stohp puts forth her best foot err hoof, and proffers words of peace and friendship.
Stohp gets a hero point for her well chosen words (and for using the phrase "I come in peace" from last time, 1 hero point total. Which sets a precedent maybe some bonus hero points could be awarded for incorporating great movie lines (and I'll be the judge of what amuses me) into your speaking, but only when said in-corporations make sense.

The lizard folk's heads swing back and forth, first toward the back of the stone, then far to the north (where the sling stone went) then off to the west (in Stock's general direction) then back to the stone.

Highlight if you understand Draconic...or if you come out from hiding and Stoph translatesyou don't have to actually translate in text, you can just say you do it.
Lizard A, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Yes, your group was rather large wasn't it. My name is RoseThorn."} He points to lizard B.Highlight to display spoiler: {"This is Tangleweed."} He then points to Lizard C Highlight to display spoiler: {"And this is Thunderheart."}

Lizard B still looks a little skeptical. However, he has stopped moving away from the other Lizards.

Lizard C speaks up.Highlight to display spoiler: {"I have heard tales of the city in the waters. My grandfather is Slythyl, he is the leader of our village."}

Lizard B seems to frown.

Lizard C continues. Highlight to display spoiler: {"What you say is true. Grandfather was most curious when the woods relented a few months ago. He spoke of the evil one, Karkasan, having finally been rid of the wood. But since then we have come to find that part of the wood",} he points westward toward the escarpment, Highlight to display spoiler: {"has separated itself from all things."}

Lizard A speaks. Highlight to display spoiler: {"This is all talk for elders, though. We will take you to our village. It is several days from here. But, we will need our gear."} He points toward their camp and their equipment.
