As the noise he made seemed to echo like thunder, Bartomus vanished and froze. His idea of moving silently and invisibly was not working. Then he hard the strange exchange of sounds hisses, grows, and other things that were not of a language he was familiar with. He came back into sight still behind the giant standing stone. He waited to hear what Stohp did next.

Stock is vaguely aware of Dirk nearby but his attention is back toward Stohp. He's also stopped caring about keeping a low profile. He was never really known for his patience.

"Can you hear anything, Dirk? What's she saying? Why isn't she calling for help? Do you think they got her with one of those silencing magics? Can you see anything? I can't see nothing. I think I should go back and check on her. Should I go back?"

Dorbin sits up on top of the rock and waves down to the lizards, trying to look innocent and attempting to help Stohp (diplomacy, untrained, 6).

Getting a sense the hiding is over Zanderallen risks a peek around the rock and seeing Stoph beckoning he lifts his visor and steps around the rock, his arms extended palms up in a friendly unarmed gesture. Whether or not Stoph is translating he realizes the awkwardness of the position with all of them standing over the lizardfolks gear as they point to it. Nodding his head to Lizard A he calls out to everyone,"Move over to the side, let these good people reclaim there gear. They are friends." Moving over himself he indicates with a sweeping gesture that they are free to grab their stuff. 'Think the gesture you might make to invite someone through a door you are holding open'

Bartomus waits.

Stock starts getting squirmy and talks at a normal tone.

Dorbin waves from the top of the rock.

Zanderallen comes out from hiding and makes friendly gestures.

Micah stands.

Sid remains in hiding.

Stohp, encourages the lizard folk to gather their things and calls for the others. She explains everything that has gone on.

Dirk still thinks the lizard folk look scary.

Greetings are exchanged. The lizards gather their things. They lead you back south until you come to the trail that ran east-west. RoseThorn explains [i] assuming the speakers of draconic translate "This trail was made by one of the giant beetles that inhabit the forest. Used to be these trails would be covered over and reclaimed by the forest almost as fast as the beetle made them. We manage to keep a few open by placing magical totems along the way."

As they near the place where you fought the vines they note the damage done to the vines. Thunderheart says"You have to be careful, there are many things in the forest that can kill you."

Tangleweed harrumphs and eyes everyone.

As they pass the totem attached to the branch they all say a little prayer.

RoseThorn speak again. "This would probably be a good place to camp for the night. Night brings many strange noises to the forest. It is very different from the way it used to be."

Tangleweed says, "For that matter day brings new and different things to the forest as well." He eyes the party.

Thunderheart speaks. "Perhaps we can share about our places of living before sleeping. How large is this Float? What do you do there?"

Please let me know if you are going to keep watch during the night, and if it is normal. The lizards talk among themselves of taking watches as well.

Bartomus followed along. He listened to their explanations and watched as the moved from the camp and along the trail to their community. When they came to the place suggested for the camp, He listened and while he couldn't understand the language, he thought the one named Tangleweed was less than pleased with the Shields. He watched a little more, unrolled his bedroll and when asked about the Float and what they did there, he offered up his own reply.

"Name is Bartomus. I haven't lived on the Float but a few years. Lived among the people of the Plains where there are few trees and only an occasional forest valley near water." He pulled his dagger out of its sheath and began working a piece of wood he found nearby. [/b]"Before joining up with the Shields, I carved things of wood and bone."[/b]

He tapped the acorn that dangled from his horn, the torc, and the ring with the dagger's blade and then went back to his carving. "The Forest here was different from what we are seeing now. Remember those beetles and their trails too. "

He found the dagger no where near as sharp as his carving tools, but managed to whittle three nice, carved acorns out of the wood. [/b]"Here you go," he said as he used the dagger to cut and then flick the finished piece to each of the lizzardmen. "Eberyon's blessing to you all."

Stock relaxes a bit once he finally joins the procession through the forest. He relaxes more when he recognizes their new campsite. He gets close to Zanderallen and says in a low voice, "What do you think? Can we trust them not to turn on us?"

During the evening, Stock tries...and ultimately fails to look relaxed around the lizardmen. When it comes time to share his background, he keeps it short, "I was born under a mountain, far from here. Like Bartomus, I have a joy of making things with my hands. Magic brought me to the Float to do just that. I've stayed ever since...and now with the rest of this group, act as one of its protectors."

If given the chance, Stock will also try to inquire on the experience of the lizardfolk during the events of the Sargrass.

Micah hides his satisfaction with how things are progressing.
When the talisman's signficance to the lizard folk becomes obvious, he whispers to Stohp with a nod in the object's direction, "Good call back there on not disturbing that."

When it comes time to make camp he suggests that they maintain watches through the night along with their new companions, not out of distrust, but as a sign of cooperation.

Zanderallen replies to Stock in a low tone,"I think we can trust them. Their customs may be different and they be unsure of us but they have decided to let their elders decide what to do with us. Until that meeting I think we are quite safe, from them at least. Let's still keep our normal watches for other things in the woods."

As they get to talking with the lizard folk he waits for a translator to be available before introducing himself. "I grew up somewhat wild on the streets of the city, before eventually joining holy order. I serve Domi as a paladin and protector of the people. The 8 of us have come to be known as the Silver Shields. We act as protectors of the city and since the evil spirits of the woods have retreated we have come to seek friendship with those long rumored to live in these woods."

About halfway down the path Sid appears next to Stock and walks silently forward. "I think it's worth a shot," Sid joins in. "Talking is better than fighting most times."

Sid translates for anyone who needs it when Stohp grows tired of it, and introduces himself as "Sid the bowyer."

Sid joins in his story to tales when it is his time and says in Draconic, "I am a craftman on the Float and I am from the Culverwood, another magic forest, but one that is not so angry... as long as you play nice."

Sid takes the final shift again, though this time he climbs and tree and hides with Lhysandri at the ready. Micah was with him the first few times, but he accepts it if he isn't this time.

Bartomus tells about himself and presents a gift. The lizards nod their thanks to Bartomus.

Stock tells about himself. The lizards don't know much about the sargrass incident you speak of. The only thing that happened recently to them was the great earthquake (wherein the plateau raised itself) and then the evil pressure/presence from the forest relenting.

Dorbin travels along. The lizards seem fascinated with the Emily.

Micah doesn't share much about himself, but is thankful they left the talisman where they found it....or at least put it back right.

Zanderallen shares about himself. The lizards nod, and tell of protectors they have in the village. They are great in the ways of the forest and hiding within the forest.

Dirk prepares to provide some entertainment. If you want to perform you will need to make an appropriate Perform check/roll.

Stohp is busy translating.

Sid pops up from nowhere, startling everyone. He assists in translating and then tells a bit about himself. The lizards are fascinated about the bow. It seems good only worthy hunters have bows.

The camp is set...fire?...if you start a fire they are at first frightened and apparently it is from using wood as a fire source. But when nothing happens they become quite amiable about the fire. Until a green branch is put on the fire and the cracking and popping starts. They find it quite amusing.

You are able to discover that the village is several days away, and it has perhaps 500 residents. They occasionally go to the big river on fishing/hunts. The village has a well for water and there are some nearby creeks (really small creeks, like you could step across them with one big step). They are young, it seems they are just entering adulthood and were on a quest to determine their futures in the village. But they will not speak more of the rights of their quest instead saying it is something that they must share with their shaman/elder. You do note they have no metal weapons or implements.

Otherwise night passes uneventfully!

Time is going to compress. It is a couple of days travel from the village. I need you to make the following rolls for the journey.

Knowledge Geography 15 = This is to be able to accurately keep the map up.
Knowledge Nature 20 = This is to note strange growths and identify them.
Diplomacy 15 = To keep up the goodwill with the natives
Perception 20 = Because the shizzel is going to happen!

Bartomus walked along with the others when they started out in the morning. He kept his eyes open as they walked and took in the forest. It was all new to him, and the sights and sounds were distractions but of the type that made being distracted worthwhile. His attempts to talk with the lizardfolk did not seem to work well and so he just kept to himself and watched.

Stohp helps to keep the peace, though she's not as good at it as hoped (10, eh I can aid another). She does keep a sharp watch though, looking for any dangers that might threaten them (26 perception). She's probably just being paranoid, the lizardfolk should spot anything native to the forest, but fortune favors the prepared so she doesn't rest on her laurels.

While they talk she asks about local cuisine. They must have some unusual foods since they had to eat without angering the forest and getting killed.

As they head down the trail Zanderallen does his very best to get on good terms with the lizardfolk and learn and share as much as he can. He tries not to use too much of Stoph's or Sid's time but is determined to build trust and friendship. He hides it well but he gets quite frustrated at his need of a translator. Much of his life Zander had gotten through by being able to influence those around him. Having that limited bothers him. But he still manages to make himself agreeable. And manage to keep half an eye open to their surroundings as well.

Despite the unfamiliarity of these primitive seeming lizardfolk, he finds himself regarding them fondly. He has no idea of the pace of development among these creatures, but he perceives that they are not that much younger than many of them.

He enjoys having a translator, as it gives him more time to consider favorable responses and relevant questions.

At some point during the journey, he has Stohp inquire about their apparent absence of metal working. The opportunity for trade is quickly apparent and he cannot help but think about the business opportunity for his family a community having no metal tools or equipment could provide.

No longer needing to lead the procession, Stock actually takes his place at the back of the line. If any lizardmen try to pull up the rear, Stock let's them pass him up so he can always keep them in front of him. All his sense are active as the party heads toward their final destination, whatever that might be.

DM Robert - Day 7 - The Shizzel

For four days the party marches along. As a group you are easily able to follow the trail. Several times the lizard folk lead you off the track and appear to wander in the woods. Coming to another trail. Some of the trails are fairly old and narrow, but always they seem to come back to the trail you originally started on going east west. Through your diplomacy you determine they are merely being cautious about leading you directly to their village.

It is midday when Stohp, Dorbin, Sid, and Stock hear sounds of a fight.
If you speak 'yelling' Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: {"Get back, get back. They were waiting in ambush for us."} Sounds of ripping and rending sound through the forest. Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: {"Arrg." "I don't want to die." }
Also in the battle you can hear more yelling, Giant, Highlight to display spoiler: {"Yum. Meat." "Fresh and tasty!"}

The Perceptive 4 also point to the south.
They see a group of lizard folk being destroyed by 3 Trolls. There also appears to be 3 medium sized figures further back from the trolls, but because of the dim light of the forest and the shrubbery and leaves, you can’t make out who or what it is other than it is three normal sized humanoid shapes. There are 9 lizard folk on the ground. These are the X's on the map. Some of the X's appear to be feebly moving. There are 4 Lizard Folk still standing trying to back away. Of the 4 standing, 2 appear to be wearing leather armor, and fighting better than the others.

The Trolls have not advanced on the 4 as they trolls appear to be examining the dead/dying lizard folk about them. Troll 3 has the arm of a lizard folk in his hands and appears to be munching on it.

Bartomus followed the pointing having lost his thoughts to the various trees and plants that they were passing. The various ways that the lizards were taking them were confusing and it seemed to be without purpose at times, but now they had a problem they all could see. There was nothing good about seeing trolls, especially ones munching on parts of some unfortunate soul that looked a lot like you.

He moved to where he was covered a bit by a larger tree and looked at the others as he began the incantation for calling forth lightening. His eyes looked up at the heavens and looked at the troll nearest to him and standing among the bodies of a few lizard men.

Dorbin spots the ruckus in the forest, quickly points in that direction. With a few strange arcane words, he lets some magic flow in that direction.

OOC:
Dorbin wants to cast a web. He is trying to decide if the two bushes will be strong enough to be points to anchor the web. To help him decide, I rolled a spellcraft or knowledge, arcana 26 (d20+16). If that's good enough to assume the bushes will hold up the web, he'd like to cast a web from about AM30 to AR31 that will catch troll 2 in it (I count the range about 110' feet and web has a range of 170). The troll would need to make a reflex save, DC 17 or be grappled in the web.

On the other hand, if Dorbin can tell that the bushes aren't going to be strong enough to hold the web (or if he's just not sure), he will instead cast a hypnotic pattern at troll 3 (about 135 feet away, range of spell is 170). That will affect 13 hd of creatures (2d4+6) and the troll needs to make a will save, DC 18 or be fascinated. With just a 10' radius spread, he should be able to just get troll 3 and not x6.

Zanderallen is enjoying their travels through the forest, while he can only talk through a translator he is developing a liking for the lizardfolk. As the others start calling out he slides his shield onto his arm. As the trolls are pointed out to him and he sees the torn and mangled lizard folk bodies anger swells within him. With a roar he takes off a full run, moving at heroic speeds. As he sprints he pulls out his long sword which instantly ignites with dazzling flames. "GET OFF THEM"

Sid automatically translates the words he hears before they sink in and then he hears the Giant tongue and tries to translate what is said, which to everyone else comes out as a pause, and then he runs to AO30, drawing his SSS as he goes, screaming in Draconic, "Fight!"

Dirk hears Sid's shot and immediately takes his bow from around his shoulder and quickly notches an arrow. He's ready to fire at a moment's notice.

Stock moves forward.

Bartomus moves forward and then calls down a lighting bolt on Troll 2. You really didn't specify except to say the closest. You also need to roll damage when you cast a spell! The Troll seems very dexterous today.

Dorbin feels a these bushes seem fairly hardy and will do as well as anything to anchor a web, granted a tree would be better, but in reality size large creatures are going to probably break through a web at some point. Dang though this troll seems to light on his feet! He avoids getting caught in the web.

Zanderallen feels the hero urge and races forward. Unfortunately the Troll does have reach and takes a swat at Zanderallen. However, Zanderallen's armor is more than a match for that attempt. However, he can just barely make out the unidentified forms....knots of dark, moldering hair spill over the features of these sickly, thin, green-skinned crones. Knowledge Nature 15 to identify.

Sid draws his short sword and races forward. Unfortunately a web springs up across his path and he is stopped short. You guys need to read the posts of the people before you especially in combat. Your destination path would have put your stopping point inside the web spell.
Sid also finds out the Trolls have a long reach for he provokes against Troll 2 and is HIT!
Sid takes 11 points damage.
However now Troll 2's arm is caught in the web.

Stohp and Micah stand unmoving.

The Lizard men with you double move forward!
The Lizard men in retreat, single move backward and have a readied action.

Troll 1 decides a man with a flaming sword is definitely something to be smashed and quickly.

Bartomus moved around the tree towards the troll that Sid had attempted to capture in a magical web. As he started forward, he raised his hand and dropped it quickly as he focused his attention on the troll.

"We are going to need some help in all of this, I suspect," Bartomus said aloud to who ever could hear. He had watched Zander dash by pulling forward a flaming sword as he engaged one of the other trolls. "Well, that should help a lot."

Having run up with the intention of trying to protect the downed lizardfolk, Zanderallen is forced to reassess his plan when he realizes how scattered the down are. He'll need to down this troll first. Plus he finds himself closely engaged as the troll finally manages to find a hole in his defense and hot pain jabs his side from the beasts claws. Zander smiles however as he sees that in the beasts anger it has left itself open. Calling upon Domi's power he smites it a massive blow, slicing deep into the troll's side. "The unknown creatures have magic, they made themselves invisible!"

Stohp moves forward and throws a tanglefoot bag.
Moving 30 feet puts you at ABAC17, ABAC16. You can't move to right behind stock in 1 move. Tanglefoot bag is range 10 increments...Troll 3 is 50 feet away, that's 4 increments (-2 per increment). The bag misses.

Bartomus moves forward and drops another lighting bolt on the Troll 2. Once again the Troll manages to dodge part of it.

Sid calls out asking what that thing was, of course no one really knows what thing he was talking about.
Sid there's no way you can get to AR31 in one 30 foot move that I can see. If you move more than 30 feet you can't attack. You can't move through the Bush, it's considered light cover. You can't move through the web, it's stationary and counts as very difficult terrain at the least. Also moving anyway except 5 foot through a radius of 10 foot around the Troll is going to provoke a free attack from the Troll. I will allow you a 2 move and standard action next time.

Stock races around the tree, chanting something about trolls bad, everyone else good.

Dirk moves forward.

Tangleweed takes 8 points of damage as the Troll's claws rip across his chest. He staggers to his knees but does not fall over.

Zander was a flash of firey blade and the Taur watched in complete amazement as the Troll was brought low so quickly. Bartomus fed a bullet into his sling and twirled the leather quickly letting the bullet fly towards the second troll. He followed the bullet with a quick downward stroke of his right hand as another bolt of lightning pulled down from the heavens. As he saw the light flash down, he could make out some forms in the distance, but the flash of the bolt blurred his eyes and made it hard for him to really see the distant figures.

Stock's attention is brought around to the South and he stares closely at the shadowy figures as they cast a spell at Zanderallen. He shakes his head and realizes that his Troll is harassing a group of lizards. His frustration gets the best of him and he charges towards it...somewhere in his animal brain he remembers to lash out at the monster with his flail.

Dorbin hears the crones muttering and looks over. He cannot identify the spell, but realizes that is because it is a very powerful spell, beyond his comprehension. He is quite worried about the danger those casters present, especially since they just attacked their group. Since only Stock is likely in hearing distance, Dorbin calls out to Stock, "Those spellcasters are very powerful, be careful!"

He sees that Zander may be covered with the cage, so he turns to the other troll and tries to slow it down. He throws a tiny blob of butter towards the troll while saying a few words.

Bartomus slings a bullet at the troll and watches it sail past into the forest somewhere. He brings down another lighting bolt on the troll. Great Googgalimugali this troll can dodge.

Micah moves forward and drops a silence spell on the unknown creatures. Somehow one of them got left off the map, so your spell is centered at AL42

Stock realizes that the unidentified creatures are Green Hags, and there are 3 of them, so they have formed a coven. DM ruling here Before he enters into rage he calls out to the others that those creatures with the Trolls are Green Hags, they are more powerful together than apart. If you take one of them out it breaks the power and limits the spells they can cast.
Stock moves forward and flails the Troll hitting it and inflicting some damage.
The Troll takes an attack of opportunity, missing To hit 11 (d20+8)

Dorbin casts Grease on Troll 3. The Troll fails and falls down.

Stohp I assume moves forward, and throws the tanglefoot bag...at the Troll hitting the prone troll that's in the grease spell. How does that work out? The troll is entangled, but also in grease.

Zanderallen fails his save and is imprisoned.

Bartomus heard what the other shapes were in the far distance. He loaded another bullet into his sling and swirled it at let it loose. He watched as it sped right at the second troll. As the bullet continued onward between the trees and the shrubs, he pulled his two fingers down in another quick motion, but this time at the center figure in the distance.

Sorry thought I said in the initial post that x's were down/dead/dying lizardmen. They are not all dead, but they are bleeding out.

Dirk walks up and shoots Troll 3. Hitting.

Bartomus slings a stone at troll 2 and hits it in the eye (crit confirmed). He brings down a lighting bolt at the lead green hag, who stands there and takes it like she has two feet made of lead. (8)

Dorbin begins casting.

Micah moves forward and casts a spell at one of the back hags. The Hag easily makes her save (27).

Zanderallen stands in his box, watching the action.

Stock swings at the troll and while technically the 13 would have hit with a prone, entangled enemy at your feet...1 always misses. His second swing does connect.

Sid skips away from one troll to another technically you need 7 squares of movement to get there, 2 diagonals will count more, but I've always felt that in reality the whole diagonal thing is relative, which is why most times in game now we just use rulers, anyway, I'm letting you get there.
Troll 2 takes his attack of opportunity... to hit 13 (missing again, Sid seems lucky).
Sid then sinks his blade into the downed troll3 and temporarily killing it.

Stohp does nothing this round.

Ok at this point Stohp is just wasting her time with these bags. The real threat are those witches. Hags? If she could nail one of those with a bag it'd be worth it. Otherwise she's wasting her time. Micah is torn between combating the remaining troll and helping Stock with the hags. Seeing what a single spell did to Zanderallen, he decides to help him while staying close enough to move on the troll if needed. Dirk begins playing to inspire his comrades. Everyone feels more feisty.

Stohp shifts around the tree and readies another tangle foot bag.

Bartomus slings a bullet at the troll but misses. He then brings down another lighting bolt on the Hag. Again this Hag seems lead footed and takes the full brunt of the blast.

Stock double moves (I can't work out the path to get you as far as you indicated. Too many diagonals to get there.) As he moves he grows larger. The power of Micah's casting. He manages to get next to Zanderallen's box.

Zanderallen stands in his box, frustrated.

Dorbin's summoned creature appears and takes a bite out of slime (slimey hag that is). It tears into her but does not succeed on the grapple check. He then casts acid dart at the downed Troll. the acid splashes and sizzles all over the creature. You can see the wounds cease to heal. The Troll is well and truly dead.

Sid, for some reason, coup de grace's the dead troll. He succeeds but really it is a wasted attack. The Troll was already below hit points, so technically it was dead already. The saving thrown would not have mattered, it would have continued to heal until acid or fire would have been applied. It was healing and in about 4 more rounds would have started to stir. But with Dorbin's attack everything is moot.

The bullet seemed to come closer than the previous one, but as it continued on its arc, he snapped his fingers and dropped them towards the frothing hag. Dorbin cringes as he sees the leopard taking horrible damage. The great cat, however, continues to attempt to attack the slimy creature, but simply cannot get ahold of the strange thing. Dorbin cannot help the leopard at the moment, but he sees that Sid is getting pounded, so he sends a large bolt of acid at the troll that strikes it in the neck!

Dirk ups the tempo of the song of courage. It's very hard to keep your blood from pounding with the song.

Bartomus slings a stone...and watches it go past the Troll again. There must be some sort of knack to this. He snaps his fingers at the hag. Another bolt of lighting comes crashing down through the trees, since that hag has not been moving you're clearing out quite a path to see the daylight. This time she actually tries and makes an attempt to dodge the blast and succeeds. Oh man 1 hit point left at this point.

Stohp moves in and tries to grapple a hag. She succeeds. Hag 2 is now in Stohp's arms.

Stock...
The write up says its an ability, Weakness: Su (supernatural): A green hag's claws sap strength from those she strikes. ..it says that it is strength damage. So no +2 on the save.
Stock brings his flail down nailing Hag 2 as Stohp grabs at her. The hag is clearly dazed by such a ferocious attack.

Dorbin's leopard attacks at the hag but seems weakened and unable to connect. Dorbin lets a spell off at the Troll hitting it for massive acid damage.

Micah moves in on the Troll, drawing the AOF. The Troll snaps at him ineffectively. Micah then swings his mace into the Troll's leg.

Sid with Micah in place you don't have to move for flank bonus. Sid sinks his sword into the Troll's flank.

Bartomus dropped another bullet into the pouch of his sling, twirled the leather straps and let loose, but realized as the bullet sailed towards the one remaining troll that the shot was going to miss. 'vadstka," he said aloud and in frustration called down the last remaining bolt at the hag that had attacked Stock.

The acid from Dorbin’s arrow continues to burn the remaining troll (10 acid damage).

Dorbin leopard, although hurt, doesn’t even pause when the hag near him drops. He charges the next hag (#3), biting and clawing the horrid beast, ripping pieces of flesh off the monster (31 total damage). It again tries to grab onto the monster with its sharp teeth, but it simply cannot get ahold of it.

Dorbin cannot see the hags well from where he is standing, so he moves up a bit to keep a better eye on the combat (move to AA36).

Stohp pins the hag to the ground.

Micah hits the troll!

Bartomus slings a stone into the air, then calls down another lighting bolt on the hag. The hag manages to dodge some of the blast.

Dirk moves forward 20 feet would have put you on top of dead troll 3 and within reach of Troll 2. I stopped you at 15 feet. and continues to play.

Sid, bloody and battered, manages to stab the troll, fatally (at least till it heals). The Troll staggers and begins to go down.

Stock hits the Hag. Then turns and hits the other hag So pinned creatures become flat-footed and loose -4 to AC so hag 2 would be at AC14 barely, but soundly. The hag's crushed head becomes one with the earth.

Dorbin's acid continues to burn the troll, and to add insult to burning injury he shoots another bolt of acid at it. The Troll is well and truly dead! He moves to get a better view of the battlefield.
The Leopard attacks (Where are you getting +10 to hit and +5 to damage, augment summoning sure but that's strength +4, so to hit would be +8 and damage would be +5, but he's been strength damaged as well.) I'll give you the bite with flanking bonus.

Zanderallen becomes philosophical in his cage.

Realizing that the acid is stopping the troll's regeneration, when Sid lands his blow, Micah starts to move even before the troll hits the ground. He then calls upon Domi's power to heal those within range, planning to continue moving to get more again.

Bartomus moves forward and looks around.

Dirk continues to play the lute, encouraging the team.

Stock whacks the hag and her body explodes in shards of flesh, bone, and blood. He turns to Micah and laughs, perhaps a trifle manically. Really the hag had 1 hit point left before the hit.

Dorbin looks around, indeed the battle seems done. His leopard has nothing to attack.

Micah moves forward channeling the healing powers of Domi, Lizard x1,2,3,&5 sit up. (lizard x7 has now died, lizard x9 is the only one not healed and not dead yet).

Sid follows on Micah's heals.

Zanderallen admires Stock's work, and the force cage pops and goes away.

Stock assesses the situation and talks to the lizards.

At this point combat has ended. So no more map, or monster action.

The lizards seem momentarily stunned. Tangleweed jumps up and down with joy for being healed and not dying. He seems to be talking about his vision not coming true, then he pauses and thinks and says, what does that mean now. Rosethorn turns and bows to the bow wielding lizards men. He begins quickly talking and seems to be explaining how they counted coup on you, how they were out for their vision quest, etc. He is talking very quickly and it is hard to follow. The two lizardmen with spears advance in a non-threatening way, clearly checking the wounded (x6 and x7 that had not sat up, but really x6 had his arm torn off, so saving him was unlikely to begin with.).

Stock takes a knee and runs his eyes over the hag pieces and then turns and looks at the rest of the party...he is not ready for the weakness he feels in his bones though and nearly collapses once the adrenaline wears off.

Subconsciously he looks down at the mess in front of him.

Finally free of his cage, the sight of wounded friends and allies pushes Zanderallen into instant action. "Micah, get that last lizard man on his feet. I'll attend to Stock." The dwarf's physical wounds, while substantial, seemed to be masking some deeper injury. Micah nods at Zanderallen, already moving to be closer to the still down lizardman. With imminent danger gone, Micah returns his focus to their larger diplomatic mission. Calling upon Domi's power, he pauses slightly, presenting a calm, serene expression before releasing the wave of healing energy. He then watches to verify the reptilian warrior is truly healed and observes the reaction of the other lizard folk.

Dirk offers up some healing.

Stock is tired and looks at the mess he made of the hags.

Zanderallen helps Stock with his weakness.

Micah heals the party and lizard folk. Micah gets the sense of the spearmen being somewhat in awe. He notes them looking perhaps greedily at your metal armored bodies. The archers appear not so enamored of you.

Sid asks the lizard folk about their bows and saunters around looking for loot. He does not see anything lootable on the baddies.

Dorbin sees to his leopard.

The injured lizard folk get to their feet. They look a little bewildered. The two remaining lizard folk spearmen call to them and tell them quickly and quietly what happened. You note that the 'normal' lizard folk are armed with stone tipped spears and some sort of woven grass armor. They have necklaces with several carved leaves upon them. The two lizard folk with bows seem to be in charge. As stated before they have 2 fine looking longbows. They are armored in what looks like pieces of large insect caprices. Their arrows were also tipped with stone.

One of the bow wielding lizard folk walks past you and begins speaking to the standing lizard folk. I'm going to assume that you speakers will translate. He is instructed them to remember the rights of the fallen. Find the tree closest to where they passed and begin. You see the lizards look around and then go to the nearest tree for each dead lizardfolk, in cases where there are 2 lizards and 1 tree it appears the next closest tree is also selected, so that it is one body one tree. The lizard folk get down on their hands and knees and begin digging. It looks like a laborious task to be done by hand.

The other archer eyes you as a group and then says in common. "Rosethorn says you come in peace from the city in the lake. Long ago you did this as well. Two hands of cycles have passed since last this occurred." Intelligence or linguistics check 20 (+2 if you are from a barbarian background) Highlight to display spoiler: { this means 10 years ago}.
He pauses. "That was both good and bad for the people. But you helped in this battle with the invaders, and thus I will withhold judgements. I will take you to our home and you can speak with Slythyl. But first we have matters to attend to."

Stock walks over to Micah and exposes a long cut on his neck that appears to be discolored. "What do you think of this?..I don't feel quite right. Can you help?"

After Micah responds, Stock lashes his flail to his pack and walks over to one of the lizardmen. Gesturing with his hands he asks if he can assist in the digging. If he get some gesture of acceptance, he will drop to his knees and mimic the digging the lizardman is doing.

Micah looks at Stocks wounds. He is a little puzzled at first by the dwarf's questions then concludes its probably just post combat reaction. With a serious expression on his face, "I think is it not as serious as it looks. The discoloration will likely be gone with a night's rest. I could heal you further if you like, but you will be fine without it.

As the lizard folk deal with their dead, Micah observes them to better understand what they are doing and the purpose behind it.

Relieved that one of the apparent leaders can speak common, Micah replies, "I know not of our past history with your people. What I do know, is that now that the forest no longer poses an impassible barrier, it is time for neighbors to talk and determine how best to coexist for the betterment of all.

"My name is Micah Smith. We are known collectively as the Silver Shields and are here to represent the leaders of the city on the lake.

"As we travel to your home, I would be honored to hear more of your customs and your people."


Glancing in the direction of the other lizardfolk, he asks, "Would it be fitting for us to assist you with your fallen?"

Stock asks Micah about his ouchy. Then he goes over to a lizard folk and through sign language motions about helping out. The Lizard Folk nods and shifts a little to the side. Stock gets a hero point.

The Lizard Folk nods to Micah. "I am Stalker Nightshade." Micah seems to think that Stalker is a title. "Yes your help would be appreciated." The stalker seems to warm to Micah. He sets his bow down and joins one of the lizard folk digging a grave. "You see we must return our fallen to the earth, and by putting them near a tree we show our acceptance of the forest as dominant. They shall lie here forever, nourishing the tree and becoming one with it."

As you do the digging you learn from Nightshade that they had been searching for the Trolls. They knew they were in the area, because they recently tried to raid the village. However, the hunting party was instead ambushed by the Trolls. They did not know that a coven of green hags was working with the Trolls.

Burying the dead takes several hours. When buried the Lizard folks equipment is buried with him. Then the Lizard Folk gather at each burial site and being an long almost incantation. This is done in Draconic, but I'm assuming that your translators are up to the task. In essence they are addressing the tree and telling the tree about the name and life of the one that is buried there. Each lizard folks seems to share their own story of the deceased and how his/her actions showed their worth to the village.

Bartomus snapped out his daze and started helping with the burial detail. He kept his focus on the tasks at hand, but commented on the fact that it seemed that the woods were busy with activity from the trolls, the lizardmen, the hags and the like. He listened to the one called Nightshade explain that the journey to the lizard's home was too far, and looked about. He wasn't focused and just waited to hear what Micah and Zander decided to do.

Wiping the dirt off his hands from helping dig the graves Zanderallen listens intently as they recite the deeds of the fallen. He is moved by the beauty of the ceremony and once they finish he adds a quiet blessing, loud enough to be heard by quiet enough to not overpower or detract from their own ritual, "These warriors died courageously protecting their people, as a warrior of Domi I honor their spirits."

He replies to Nightshade, "Stalker Nightshade, I am Zanderallen, warrior of Domi. Your rites for the fallen are very beautiful. We would be honored to meet with your people but first we would like to track these creatures back to their lair. The presence of a coven is an ill thing and I would hate to leave any other members seeking revenge. We would be honored by your presence in this endeavor.

"You say your people used to have contact with the people of the city. Would that have been with a group called the Crimson Shields? We have heard some of their deeds and have met Jella daughter of Florin. Did you know them?"

Stock dry brushes his hands to remove the dirt from them. He picks at the mud still caking the underside of his fingernails as he watches the ceremony from a nearby stump. He turns to Bartomus and says in a low voice, "You ever hear those stories of Lizardfolk eating their young? I wonder what that's all about. Or are these dead different because they died in battle..."

Hearing Zanderallen talk of tracking down the hags, Stock speaks up, "The trail is over there. Looks like they were walking single file to disguise their numbers and then spread out."

While helping with the burial, Micah takes a quick survey of everyone. He notices a few bruises and scrapes among the Shields and the lizard folk, but decides everyone is in fairly decent health and retains his magical healing in reserve.

His ears perk up when he realizes he might hear more of the Crimson Shields from a source unconstrained by local politics.

Before they depart, he casts detect magic to verify that the hags had nothing of magical value.

Bartomus helps out and comments about the woods being busy.

Zanderallen helps out with the funeral services and smooth talks the lizard folk.

Stock makes a comment about lizard cannibalism. The lizard folk seem to interested in the funeral to hear him. He points out the trail of the trolls.

Stohp looks for a campsite.

Dorbin helps out with the funerals and helps convince the lizard folk to back track the trolls.

Micah casts detect magic on the defeated's remains. He finds nothing. Indeed there is scarcely enough spell components left to do anything, though there is enough for an animate dead spell.

Sid helps with the funerals and in finding a campsite.

Nightshade appreciates your help. He comments to Bartomus, "Yes since the Crying woods has changed we no longer have to hide from the forest itself. Things are somewhat easier. And game has begun to return to the woods. It has been long since all in the village have had sufficient meat. But with the wood no longer trying to slay the living other things have been coming down form the eastward mountains."

When the campsite is discovered he details the younger lizard folk (Thunderheart, Rosethorn, and Tangleweed) to gather the berries. Stalker Buttercup will stay with them and follow once all the food has been gathered. He details the other lizard folk to act as rearguard. "No offense, but you are better armored than we are, and some of you seem to be spell casters. I think you might be better suited for lead."

As you follow the trail Nightshade will tale you part of the tale. "It was two hands of cycles ago when the strangers that called themselves the Crimson Shields of Hope came to the Crying Woods. The forest was as it used to be then, something to be feared for it tried to slay all those that were living within it. These, I believe they called themselves adventurers came with a purpose. Back then we were the slaves to Techaamauacaklyu, a dragon. The Crimson Shields came to slay the dragons that ruled the woods. These Crimson Shields were a mixed lot, but mostly they were of the surface drow race, there was a halfling and two humans with them I think. They managed to slay Techaamauacaklyu, along with his kin. We thought at first this was a fine thing for then we were no longer slaves. But it seems that the dragons had long had some form of treaty or spell or something with the woods. For once Techaamauacaklyu was no more we found that the forest began to seek our demise. Other clans of Lizard folk were spread throughout the woods. We used to communicate with them and occasionally were sent on tasks from one village to the other. Some of the old villages eventually succumbed to the forest's anger. Others may have moved out. I do not know for we were confined to this area between the river and the mountains. We stayed as the way north led to lands not suitable to us, and east were mountains, inhabited by many things. Slythyl sought ways to keep us hidden from the forest."

After about an hour of walking south, you come to a place where the trees seem fairly thick and it quickly gets to a twilight kind of darkness. Ahead of you, you see a low hill with what appears to be a cave in front of it. The cave is partly blocked by some bushes.

Bartomus listened to the other side of the story about the Crimson Shields defeating the dragon. He hadn't thought about the fact that maybe the woods was held in check by the Dragon which gave it power to enslave an entire people. "Suspect the trolls and the hags are some of those other things. Makes me wonder if other bigger things could be also sniffing about.

When they started out walking again, he kept along with Stohp and paid attention to the change in the forest. When Stalker Nightshade suggests the Shields take the lead, Micah responds with a nod "We are honored that you would entrust us with taking the vanguard." He then moves into the forward position.

He listens to the stalker's tale. At some point he asks, "You mentioned that the forest attacked living things, but there also exist non-living things that walk and hunt. Do such creatures abide in this forest? If so, what do you know of them?"

Zanderallen listens intently as they head down the trail, making the appropriate comments and encouragements to keep Nightshade talking. He grins inwardly as Micah takes over the next string of the conversation, such teamwork now coming quite naturally to them. "That is quite the tale. I hope that we can become friends and help you to flourish in the forest now that you are free of both the dragon and malevolent presence."

As they approach they cave Zanderallen is deeply thankful for the keen eyes of his companions as he makes out little more than the cave opening. "Think we should try to inspect it this evening? I would hate to camp nearby if there are more trolls or hags inside?"

Dirk gathers some firewood as they walk along.

Stohp stops near the front of the cave. Something seems off.

Bartomus ponders what other things may be wandering into the forest.

Stock spots a trip vine in front of the cave entrance.

Micah wonders about the undead in the forest.

Dorbin looks around some more.

Zanderallen wonders if they should investigate the cave tonight.

Sid thinks they should all be careful.

The hill does not look too big. Unless there are downward spiraling ramps it can't be that big. Well maybe big enough for a couple of large creatures to make it a home. A large creature would have to duck entering the cave. There is definitely a trip vine stretched across the entrance to the cave. Sid believes that the vine joins into the trees and spots a giant log suspended up in the trees. Could be that the log would swing down in front of the entrance sweeping anything aside that triggered the trip vine.

Disable Device 15 to deactivate the trap without triggering it.
The cave is not large. Should you disarm the trap roll perception checks to search the cave, it is just one large chamber.

Nightshade shrugs at Micah's questions. "I have not seen such. But we often use such tales to frighten the young ones and make them behave in the village. There are tales of vampires that have tried to make the forest home. And wandering zombie bands roaming the western woods. Who can say if such tales are true."

Assuming there aren't obvious things to find, Stock will spend most of his time searching the walls for anything that is hidden.

Zanderallen is somewhat surprised at the easy manner in which Dirk marches right up, disarms the trap, and heads on in. He wasn't sure about the boldness, but he was uses to Sid's unique careful, yet carefree manner. Dirk seemed a decent fellow, he'd hate to see him die. "See anything in there Shields? Does it like their lair, and if so is there any signs of more? Nightshade, are any of your people familiar with this part of the woods or this cave? Or do you think they moved in recently?"

Sid and Dirk easily disarm the trap, or rather they prevent it from being able to be triggered as the only way to really disarm this trap would be to cut the ropes holding up the giant log. They go in and look around.

Bartomus goes in and looks around.

Stohp lights a torch, goes in and looks around.

Stock goes in and examines the walls.

Zanderallen stays outside with Nightshade and the lizard folk.

The bushes were a feable attempt to hide the cave entrance. Going in you see that it a strangely large cavern, about 50 by 60 feet, oval and slightly domed. It would make a fine camp site, put a fire in the front to ward off anything creatures and keep the smoke from building up and have a secure place to rest. However, it may need some cleaning.

Strewn in one corner of the cave you find some bones and scarps of hide.

There is another area of the cave with some leafy branches. Bartomus moves them around and finds a large old sack. In the bag you find...

Stock appraises the cave, it is too symmetrical to be natural. However, it does not seem to be stone or dirt. After a little more work he determines that it is wood. But it appears to have been worked in a strange manner, it's almost as if it was grown in into this form. There is nothing more you can determine about this at this point. It's not harmful or dreadful in any way.

Bartomus gets a sense of peace and well being while in the cave.

Outside the other lizard folk join the group. They appear to be burdened with a great many berries and few mushrooms.

Nightshade informs Zanderallen that they have never noticed the cave before. However, in all honesty they have only recently starting exploring off the trails and safe ways. Suddenly one of the lizard folk hisses and points off to the side. There is a large mountain goat wandering in the woods. Nightshade and stalker Buttercup swiftly raise their bows and let loose. The goat is killed. The lizard folk are happy that there will be meat tonight.

Standing outside the cave, Micah again casts detect magic and makes a quick scan in all directions.

After a moment's reflection, he asks Nightshade, "I was raised in the city, so am unskilled in such things, but I expect that you who live here in the forest are skilled in tracking. Do you notice anything unusual or revealing about the tracks around this cavern?"

Then, while the others investigate, he stands watch, alert to anything else that may be outside the cave.

It was a nice cave. Bartomus liked the cave and he felt right in it. "We could stay here you know. I think we should stay here."

When he found the stash of weapons and loot in the old bag, Bartomus reached in and pulled out things with the help of others. He whistled, "Wow, so the question I have is who left these.

He tried to get a sense of value on some of the things but he was not an arms dealer. But some things he knew the value of. "These here, worth a good deal of gold. Might get 500 pieces of gold back on the float. These pearls, a good 50 pieces of gold. Not my style though'

"If we stay here, we need to do a bit of cleaning. Be worth it thought. Be a good place for future use too."

Stock steps away form the wall and sighs. "Don't see any secret doors or such in here. It's just some kind of earth lodge. Kind of shoddily built too, if you ask me." He rubs his beard and examines the timbers. Shrugging he walks over to the growing pile of loot on the floor.

He quickly works through the weapons, not having much to offer. When he gets to the smaller items though he whistles, his dwarven greed apparent. "Don't know about those earrings...looks like pearl but pearls don't grow underground. I agree on the armbands Bart...they wouldn't look bad on Stohp if you ask me...the pendant a bit less...maybe 100..."

"Don't know about staying here. The goat scraps in the corner should be cleaned out...where'd the things get a goat anyway? There mountains around here?"

Would it be inappropriate for you and your warriors to take all of the weapons? They are of superior workmanship. “

He hopes the others will agree with the gesture.

"Well as this is where the tracks lead I assume the trolls and hags had made some sort of temporary home here. No sign of any more of the beasts about so hopefully that threat has been dealt with. The unusual construction of the cave is probably due to the powers of the coven. Nightshade, we would be honored if you would accept the weapons found here as either your rightful share of the spoils or a sign of goodwill between our people, hopefully both. If creatures like this are moving into the forest you made need them to keep yourselves safe."
