The Entrance Tuesday August 28th, 2018 12:06:50 PM
The Agents looks into the room, quickly lighted by Pru’s dancing lights spell. There is a momentary shadow from behind as the giants watch from the doorway to see how the Agents fare. Pompous points out the scrapes on the floor as Trayvin points out that the statues are actually golems. Nikolai doesn’t like the giants behind them, but he looks around the area for any sign of human footprints. He does not see any. Perception, DC 22, Nikolai only: Highlight to display spoiler: {There are no footprints, but as you look for them, you can see that some of the piles of trash and debris are much newer than others…}.
Anna and Sigvar talk about some options for giants and golems. Sigvar moves up with Michael to examine the door beyond the golems. However, as soon as Michael and Sigvar get close to the golems, they immediately start moving, the two of them standing up tall, raising their large, bulbous fists!
OOC: Dang it. I have an Excel map. The link appears below. However, I can’t seem to do anything with the map. When I try and copy and paste it tells me to use Ctrl-V – and it tells me that WHEN I press Ctrl-V. So there’s the map. It doesn’t have you on it. The permissions should be set so that you can edit it and place yourselves on the map. Oh, and the space at the bottom has the giants standing outside, but I can’t place them, either, other than some text...so yes, we’re in combat, your move. Place yourselves on the map if you’re able with Michael and Sigvar starting adjacent to the golems and post away actions for combat round 1! Map

Not particularly knowledgeable in rock things, more like animal things and undead, Nikolai at least assumes that sharp things don't work well against stone. Unfortunately his magic kama is a sharp thing, not a blunt one.
Nor was he quite ready for them to react, expecting the trigger to be messing with the door, so he instinctively pulls out his +2 Kama. He didn't relish punching rocks. 'Y'know, it could be they were just moving into position to block the doors rather than actually attack, but too late for that now,' he muses as he quickly steps up next to Michael and takes a swing at the golem with his magic kama to see what happens.

Sigvar wastes no time and quickly draws his sword. It clangs against the massive golem, but one strike knocks a chunk of stone off the construct. Pru moves and places a wall of ice up between the group and the giants, effectively blocking the entrance. Pompous lets a number of arrows fly, but he can tell they are doing little to affect the pile of stone. Trayvin shouts some advice and prepares to attack. Michael easily slips behind the creature Sigvar has attacked and tries to stab it repeatedly with his dagger. He can indeed tell the dagger isn’t quite working against the stone like it would against flesh. Anna grows stronger. Nikolai tries to stab the creature, but realizes that his kama isn’t going to do much, either. Akir prepares for battle as well, momentarily fading out of sight.
The attacked golem looks around through its gem eyes and a burst of energy goes out from it. With a grinding of stone against stone, a large fist slams down and connects with Nikolai, hitting him hard (20 damage). The other moves up behind Sigvar, stone sliding across the floor. Sigvar feels the wind from a massive fist flying behind him, just missing him.
OOC: Stone Golems: AC 26; DR 10/adamantine; 10’ reach #1 Damage: 51 #2 Damage: 0
I see Sigvar’s longsword is adamantine & Trayvin has adamantine. If anyone else can overcome the DR, please let me know, otherwise I’ll assume you cannot and deduct the 10 per attack damage. They are susceptible to flanking damage & criticals.
I’m not completely sure on how to apply the flanking damage and DR. If that is an additional damage, then I would think DR would apply separately. In other words, Michael’s first attack is 6 damage (-10 DR) + 15 flanking damage (-10 DR) for a total of 5 damage. But if it ISN’T separate damage, it would be 21 damage (-10 DR) for a total of 11 damage. I’ve applied it the first way, but I’m open to other interpretations. Michael damage: 6-10=0, 15-10=5, 3-10=0, 23-10=13, total applied: 18
Nikolai damage: with a d6+5 str facing a 10DR, anything other than a 6 will result in zero damage, so I applied 1 damage here.
Sigvar, Michael, Nikolai: Will save, DC 17 or be affected by slow: staggered, can only make 1 move or standard action each round (cannot take full-round actions, which means only 1 attack). Also, -1 to attack rolls, AC, and reflex saves. Move at half normal speed.

OOC: Michaels avatar is on a disk. Also, I take sneak attack damage as a form of precision damage that a rogue can get by exploiting weaknesses in his opponent. So I think the DR 10 would apply to each attack not to the weapon damage and sneak attack damage respectively. if the blade had some kind of poison effect it would be subject to the DR as well as the weapon damage. but the weapon damage is all that is being rolled here, the extra dice are just indicating how well I did with the attack. Another way to look at it would be that if he got a save vs the extra damage it would be separate and thus subject to the DR. but it's not so that means its all in the single attack.
Michael feels the world begin to speed up but with focus and determination he fights off the effect. then Pru's spell takes effect and the world slows down, he welcomes it with fierce glee. A larger stone fist whistles past Michael to hit Nikolai, he drops his defence to better quickly end the threat.
The creature is stone, but magical stone nonetheless, it moves via magic, keeping stone joints whole and together and allowing the hard unyielding stone to flex when needed to allow movement. still, it is stone and cracks form from the imperfections in the magic and stone. While his Rapier and his short sword cannot penetrate the stone, they can certainly worry a crack into something a bit more deadly and mess around with the wizardry that keeps the joints together. With speed as his ally now, he should be more effective. he works on a joint. leveraging the blades in a crack to widen it.

Pru sees the power emanating from the golems and quickly casts haste to counteract the effect. Fortunately, no one was affected, so they are now hasted! Sigvar continues hacking away at the creature, his sword lopping off large chunks of stone. Michael continues to focus on the joints of the monster and his sword manages to find some weak spots. His final blow is enough to break off the arm joint. The arm falls off and the massive thing simply stops moving.
Pompous, thinking quickly, changes targets to the other stone beast. However, perhaps because of changing targets, his arrows fly wide, deep, and around. Trayvin casts another spell and moves behind the other stone creature. Anna turns into a dinosaur and realizes she is standing in a pool of water – the wall of ice is already starting to melt in the heat. She can also hear pounding on the outside of the ice wall. Nikolai steps back as the creature stops moving.
The other beast, standing in place now behind Sigvar, sends out another wave of energy (slow, will save, DC 17 or slowed for Trayvin and Sigvar). The two massive fists swing, but Sigvar manages to duck and weave out of their way completely!

The Agents do not let up on their assault against the remaining stone golem. Pru fires a few magic missiles, Trayvin hits it hard, Anna slams into it, Sigvar swings and his sword clangs against the metal. Akir continues to hack at it while Nikolai and Pompous carefully watch the slowly melting wall of ice.
After the continued assault, the second stone golem creaks and grinds to a halt and it stops moving, missing large chunks of stone. There is a momentary silence in the large, dimly lit room. The pounding on the ice wall has stopped. After a few seconds, there is a crack. Looking over at the doors beyond where the golems were standing, you can see a light puff of dust and dirt as the doors release and shift. They do not open, but there is a tiny space between the doors – apparently, they just unlocked…

OOC Has there been any sign that the scouts were here, either dead or alive? If it took killing the golems to get the door to unlock, why are there marks on the floor that indicate that the door has opened before? Are those marks recent? DO the golems appear to be slowly rebuilding themselves? IC Sigvar considers Michael's plan. It would be an excellent test of the Giant's motives, but it would mean he lies to them. This would tarnish his honor and betray the trust Gargul set in him when the god granted him his powers. " A good plan Michael, but I will not deceive them. Some of you made bargains with them to sign papers once we opened the door to the temple. We have done so and I expect they will sign those papers, probably without reading them based on their desperation to open the doors. I hope those papers are readily available, as I doubt they will let us come back with them later." " Which leads me to my other concern, which I could not voice in front of them. They seemed to detect on the edge of evil when I looked at them. They are belligerent, territorial and I believe had we not stood up to them they would have done us harm. No idle passer by is going to stand up to them like we did and I think that would mean that the giants would at the very least take advantage of them, either by robbing them or possibly even killing them. That as the impression I got. As such we can not in good conscience leave them here. We need to either make them move on, or kill them to protect anyone else that might enter this valley." The Agents consider what to do next.
OOC: Mostly OOC answers today.
Sigvar asked about signs of the scouts. The group hasn’t really had time to explore and search the large room. Remember, it is partially dark with flickering dancing lights. There are piles of debris in various places, some look very old, some not as old. It will take a few minutes to search the room.
The marks on the floor near the large doors aren’t necessarily from the doors opening. They may have been from the golems moving. Examining them more closely would support the idea that the golems had moved across them recently.
The golems appear to be nothing but piles of stone at this point and do not appear to be rebuilding.
The inside doors are very large and tall and the giants could easily walk through them.
The wall of ice I picture as sort of opaque instead of a clear window. I imagine that you can see light and figures through it, but you really can’t clearly see through it.

Nikolai has the impression that at least one of these giants is smart enough to realize the Thumb leader was sort of bluffing but that didn't bother him very much. The giants saw how quickly they dealt with the two golems and should be smart enough now to not mess with the Fist just yet.
If the giant's reaction is not hostile, that is, they stay put and talk, Nikolai retrieves his Everburning Torch and hands it Trayvin to search the place with some light.
The Entrance Wednesday September 5th, 2018 12:38:08 PM
Pompous heads over to the large stone doors. Pru moves to the wall of ice and the entrance on the far side of the room. Michael heads over to the unanimated stone golems. Sigvar heads to the sides of the room, looking at the debris piles. Trayvin starts searching another area of the room. Stegosaurus Anna stands still in the middle of the room while Nikolai joins Pru in greeting the giants.
When Pompous heads to the doorway, he can smell things that are old, dank, and dusty. Clearly this door has not been opened in a very, very long time. He tries to peer through the doorway, but the space beyond is completely and utterly dark. Clearly there are no sources of light beyond the doorway and without a source himself, he cannot see anything past the opening. The doors open outward if he should wish to open them (OOC: I wasn’t sure with that description if you wanted to open them or not).
Pru dismisses the ice wall and greets the giants in a friendly way. One of them takes a step forward and looks around the room. He can see the Agents scattered around the room and then he spots the unmoving stone golems right next to Pompous and Michael. He looks at the Stegosaurs in confusion. He says, "So, you opened the doors for us. That is good. Maybe we will let you be our friend now as you desire." Sense Motive, DC 22: Highlight to display spoiler: {He appears to be slightly less confident and impressed with the Agents.}. A second giant remains just outside the entrance way. You can hear small rocks tumbling around outside, likely the other two walking around.
Michael starts digging around the golems, not wasting time and going right for the eyes. One of the golems has bright red eyes and the other has deep green eyes. Indeed, they are gems and Michael can easily pry them out of the stone now. Appraise, DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {Two emeralds and two rubies with a value of 7,000 gold each.}
Trayvin and Sigvar search the debris in the room. Various items here make it look like different people and things over the years have used this entrance as a resting point or even an extended campsite. There are bits of fire remains, some bits of trash, pieces of string, some woodchips as if from carving, and bits of leather here and there. Nothing really looks to be of value. There are a few bones in a couple of places, but they are very small bones, likely from a squirrel or rabbit. Inside the door Sigvar does find a relatively new, but worn pack that looks like one that is used by scouts from the Agents. It is empty and appears in reasonable shape (it has not been torn, ripped, and does not have any blood on it or anything else). It almost looks like it was just taken off and dropped there.

Or that the giants found it and just tossed it there. Perception 24 Sigvar looks the giants he can see over more closely, again applying his ability to DETECT EVIL. The Giants don't seem aggressive, but they are eyeing the temple doors and the depths that have been revealed. We don't know your scouts, but if they invaded our camp, they probably ended up in the stewpot. They don't seem at all concerned about this, taking it as a matter of course.
The Giants aren't evil, they just defend what they decide is their territory fiercely. The pack, once examined, is clearly from an Agents scout. You would guess that he got caught sneaking about the Giants' camp. They ignored the pack, or didn't find it, or didn't care about it. We will allow you into our temple, but any gold and gems are ours. You may keep whatever other trinkets you find.
Pompous, directing his light beyond the doors, sees little in the dimly lit room. The light filters through dust and debris from the opening doors and the only source of light is the outdoors -- you see no signs of light or windows inside. The stale air assaults your senses as you look into the space beyond, but mostly can see only shadows and darkness. He vaguely sees the outline of what looks like benches or pews.

Pru is a little bit put off by the thought of eating an intelligent race, and Nikolai gives an ultimatum. His fellow Agents however, aren't about to let the death of one of their own go unpunished. Akir and Sigvar prepare for fighting the giants to end their menace to the area.

Mailed Fist assignments are often fraught with danger. It's expected. Some of that danger is getting caught and eaten by some marauding monster. Because these 'marauding monsters' are intelligent, does that change anything?
"Our scouts have orders to investigate what has been attacking the farms around here. If he was sneaking, as you say, it was only to see if you were the ones doing the marauding. Sigvar closes his eye and looks heavenward. They killed our man, a questionable call since he was of little threat to them. Then they ate him, a clearly intelligent being. That was what raised Sigvar's hackles. He might have done many of the same thing if stranded alone in a hostile place, but he would not have resorted to eating a sentient being. Then Prudence speaks up and he steps behind her. " I am very willing to allow them to explore, maybe find their way home. I'll not stand in the way of that."
The Entrance! (DM Warren) Friday September 14th, 2018 6:03:21 PM We know not what the sign itself may be, only that it will lead us back to our kind. It may be a map, or portal, or some kind of teleportation magic. Our omens are not specific. He shrugs.
Most of the group is willing to let the giants explore for themselves, but Nikolai makes a fair point. Perhaps they are too big to fit in, and will need assistance anyway.
Anna sniffs around the door, but smells naught but dust and decay. With Sigvar having pressed the doors mostly closed, there is no light to speak of going in. If there's anything else inside, it's certainly not making any noise.
All that's left to do is make the final decision about whether to kick back, or kick in the door.

This place was not built to accommodate giants and it would be a shame for you to go through perils and dangers, maybe even getting killed, only to find you can't reach the portal. We'll at least find out what it is for you and hopefully it will be easily accessible to you. Best you can do right now is stay out here and have a deer ready for a going-away party when we return."
It is in Nikolai's understanding that the giants have given up on loot prospects so it is just a matter of finding out what this omen was talking about and getting the giants to it.
"Ok Mailed Fist, let's go find this sign that will bet the giant's back home. Open those doors again, check for magical traps, traps, and more traps. Look for undead, or not dead.

Now that it seems decided that the Agents will be delving into the temple, Pompous sees fit to warn the others about the other creature or creatures that attacked him. He describes a shrieking noise, and recalls that had he not had kept his wits about him, he may have been overcome by fear.
Michael props the door open a crack, but finds no more traps than he found before. As he plays the light into the room, he can see what looks like a few moldering benches, but the room is wider than his light can reach. At the very end of where his light reaches in the back of the room, he can dimly see a raised stone area, maybe an altar? And near it is a large, dark, slowly moving shape.

To Nikolai he asks, " Are you serious?" " They admitted to killing and eating our brother in arms and we are going to walk through an abandoned temple to find them something to send them home? " "Why? What purpose could that possibly serve?" "The room is a temple, it is huge. Let the murderous bastards go get their own shiny bauble. Why risk more Fist assets on it?"

Akir chooses his words carefully, making eye contact with Sigvar and holding it.
"Because our Thumb has ordered we move forward, is why." He pauses and looks at Nikolai, then puts some strong emphasis on his next works. "If we aren't pleased with our immediate chain, it's not our place to argue with it, but to report to our superiors on the situation, at which point our Thumb will be either supported or reprimanded by the Knight Commander."
Akir points to the entrance.
"At this point Nikolai has entered us into something of a verbal contract in the field. Thumbs have had this authority for some time. They take a large risk when doing it, because when doing so they put themselves into the position of representing the Mailed Fist without actually having the Mailed Fists blessing. Sometimes it works out, and sometimes the road to a gallows is paved with good intentions."
He stifles the start of his next sentence, and decides to save it for later.

Alchemist's Fire: You can throw a flask of alchemist's fire as a splash weapon. Treat this attack as a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 feet.
A direct hit deals 1d6 points of fire damage. Every creature within 5 feet of the point where the flask hits takes 1 point of fire damage from the splash. On the round following a direct hit, the target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. If desired, the target can use a full-round action to attempt to extinguish the flames before taking this additional damage. Extinguishing the flames requires a DC 15 Reflex save. Rolling on the ground provides the target a +2 bonus on the save. Leaping into a lake or magically extinguishing the flames automatically smothers the fire.

Smite Evil Once per day, a paladin can call out to the powers of good to aid her in her struggle against evil. As a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess. In addition, while smite evil is in effect, the paladin gains a deflection bonus equal to her Charisma modifier (if any) to her AC against attacks made by the target of the smite. If the paladin targets a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect. The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability.

Even with Sigvar's aura, Pru is not quite able to resist the effects of the fear and cowers in the corner.
Sigvar, being immune to such paltry things as fear, is glad of a target for his weapon, which he plunges through the ghost with purifying force. In one blow, the ghost poofs into dust!
With Sigvar's help, Michael overcomes his fear, but also has no target. Instead (if he wants), he moves to the other ghost to offer Pru some protection and slices it once.
Trayvin knows that they cannot afford to be running around willy nilly, and calls upon divine power to suppress the chilling effects of the ghost.
Panicked, but able to act anyway with Trayvin's help, Nikolai has to decide what to do!
Anna splatters one of the oozes (reflex 21 or 6 acid damage) but gets a bit dizzy and misses the other.
Pompous hits the other ghost several times, but can tell his weapons aren't doing full damage, though he is close enough for the bonus. Had he been any further away, his last attack would not have connected. 5 foot squares
Akir continues his force assault on the next ooze.
No sooner did one ooze fall than another takes its place. AOO for Anna They have no more luck than they did before in getting past Sigvar or Anna's armor.
Red ghost takes a swipe at Michael, causing wounds to break out on his body. 28 damage, fort DC18 for half After attacking, it floats backwards through the wall.
Additionally, some unknown sources slams into Sigvar from behind. 13 damage Anna takes damage twice from some unknown source also. 10 and 15 damage

The ghost touches Michael and it feels like 10 knives are stabbed into him, he's a bit tougher than the ghost realized so 5 of them slide off his body.
fort save 20. 14 damage.
with the ghost out of the picture for a moment Michael looks toward where Anna and Sigvar are, maybe they need some help.
the red ooze is dead but the black one is still on fire. it takes 4 damage for this round and 6 damage for last round unless it somehow put itself out.

Thanks to Trayvin, Pru is able to pull herself together. She wastes no time in sending another Fireball at the oozes, this time targeting the black and purple ones.
[The oozes take 36 points of fire damage, DC 20 Reflex save for half.]

Anna dodges the acid only to take 25 damage from some unknown sources. She takes her AOO against the new ooze that shows up (33 vs AC; 30 bludgeoning damage)
Anna then uses another whirlwind attack against the oozes in range (21 vs AC; 23 bludgeoning damage) (26 vs AC; 25 bludgeoning damage)
Anna also says, "I'm being attacked by something I can't see. Can someone heal me?"

Sigvar had planned to wit for the other ghost to pop from the wall to attack and then kill it, but he can't leave the spot he and Anna are blocking and she needed healing so he stays and touches her. LOH for 19 healing to Anna. " Definitely something I can't see up here. Purge it or glitterdust or something please."

Not much Nikolai can do against the oozes but he can do a good deal against ghosts. He focuses the power of his Ebyron's Tear with Ghost Touch and Readies a fist against any other ghosts that come near enough.

Michael looks around for a target and sees nothing but ooze. Maybe all the shifting between animal brains is making Anna crazy? The (black) ooze seems to forget it's on fire for a moment before the flames start up again. I did roll for last round - it'll take 4 more now
Pru stays tucked in her corner and lobs another explosion at the oozes, easily targeting all three. Miraculously, ooze (purple) avoid some of the damage. (Nat 20 save)
Anna is getting the hang of her tail now and crushes oozes left and right. Reflex saves DC21 or take 4, 7, 10 damage One of them is splattered and moves no more. Still, something else appears to be hitting her, and she requests assistance.
Pompous looks for a ghost to fire upon, but it is behind a wall for now. Dang tricky incorporeals.
Sigvar confirms Anna's suspicions since something unseen is hitting him too. For now, he heals Anna's wounds.
Nikolai readies himself to attack a ghost should it come near.
Ooze (green) glorps on through purples space to fill the hole left by the other. It's really gross to watch. It fares no better at getting past Sigvar's armor.
The evidence seems to be stacking up now. Either that or something really likes Pompous. He is also being struck by invisible blows now. 11 and 10 damage To make things worse, the ghost pops its scary face up in front of him again, but it doesn't come close to striking him this time.
