Gothruk awaits the smaller member's recon, he dosn't think he'd be able to get through without a struggle, not that that would bother him greatly.
I mean at this point there's no chance that these plants wouldn't attack us right? Nearly every other one has..

He presses his hands to their bark and attempts to commune with them... To no avail. He offers to scout ahead to see how for the dense trees go and offers to help whomever needs it get through the trees. [know nature 23, arcana 18]

He keeps his eyes peeled for dangers and for the possibility of finding a downed tree of branch from this Dorset that he might one day sculpt into a bow. [perception =16] all the while casting detect magic.
Forest thru the Trees Part 2 - (DM Matt) d20=1 ; d20=8 ; d20=16 ; Saturday September 15th, 2018 9:56:19 AM Rolth takes a wait and see attitude sprinkled with a very appropriate song. He wonders if the trees may be transformed people. Tsak heads forward next to Gothruk. The trees, though tough initially, seem to move easily as Finnian and Elys have little trouble opening a passageway through the trees. (OOC: All moving taurs Escape Artist DC vs 30)(Failure -1 non-lethal) (Unless I missed it I don’t believe any of the taurs have moved forward. You can use one non-taur roll from Thursday’s post to help but it must be declared in that post that it’s for you.)
Kiwina asks for some help locating some areas that may be easier to squeeze through. He says, "I could ask the spirits if these are the treants, and if they're injured. But I fear my ancestors would not understand any magic that could do this."
Elyas casts light on a rock and throws it through one of the gaps he could fit through, looking to see how far back the tangle goes, and if it gets harder further in.
The lighted stone flies 10 feet and is deflected off a tree. It lands to the right. The light illuminates the trees and Elyas sees that past the initial row of trees space has improved. (OOC: Though a Con check DC vs 16 would still be needed avoid tripping or avoid errand branches)
Falco Ambersier Falco moves to the closest tree and begins to examine it. "Were they once human or taur? What would do this?" From what he can tell these could be the treants from before the Sargrass event. There are some noticable human-like features only found in treants but Falco also recalls that when frightened these treants will sleep.

With help from Elyas, he manages to get through the outermost ring (escape artist = 22, plus the aid = 24; natural 20, but not a 30), although he bangs into branches often enough to become a bit frustrated. "Rolth, it's your homeland," he points out, as if the liontaur can do something about it.

Despite his caution, he is whipped by some gnarled branches, probably those haughty oaks. (Escape artist = 7, 7, -2 points of nonlethal damage) Stung by Kiwina's comment about being the local, he eschews asking for aid, and suggests that Finnian help Sable if he needs it.

This witch may be far worse than anything we have yet faced, but we travel with some larger taurs and they cannot manage to get through this tightly made bramble. I want to me more like you, to be wise as a treant and strong as a tree, but I never will if we can't... get... through!" his voice raises as he tries to shove branches out of the way. In his frustration his arms turn briefly into branches of their own, with bark dark and hard like that of an old black walnut.
[ooc I rolled a 16, that can be for an aid or a diplomacy if these are actually treants... Wish I was a little better druid, could have that speak with plants instead of just speak with animals, are there any animals around?] Also [Not sure if I took non-lethal damage at all, but if it was from the woods Finnian is actually fine, and should be able to move through this forest at full speed no checks because of Woodland Stride]

He feels the power of the warper-sar move though him, his body tingles and eyes grow a little brighter as he focuses on one of the trees with a face.

Elyas is frustrated by the tree barrier and the time it is taking to get through it. He is very tempted to just try to burn a few trees down to make way, but knows that will not go over well with some of the Petals. So he helps where he can in silence, trying to not let his frustration show too much.
As he holds the branches for someone who might need it (just keeping the previous help roll, since I don't think anyone used it yet), Elyas will see if he can determine anything about what sort of magic may have caused these trees to move and bunch up like this

With the team a little worse for wear they manage to make it through the trees. All attempts to communicate or detect anything but plant life is mute as the trees stand still. Falco inspects the trees but finds no magic. Elyas’s Arcane knowledge reveals that some treants have been known to hibernate for centuries. Causes of the hibernation are unknown but some scholars suspect it is a nature reaction to fear but it could be a natural thing like bears sleeping through the winter. Knowledge Nature vs DC 6 Highlight to display spoiler: { Putting together the fact that the trees are grouped oddly and the sudden unnatural looking forest it wouldn’t be wrong to assume that this are the treants that rose to help the island. One can only guess how many others have just frozen in place all over the island. They seem to no longer be sentient. At least until they are needed again.}
Rolth sees it first. The bramble fence surrounding a seemingly empty field. Is it empty? It’s hard to tell from this distance. Tsak has a better view to the right of Rolth and he can definitely see some sort of castle complex. Tsak only: Highlight to display spoiler: { From your excellent perception you are able to estimate a rough distance of a days travel.} In front of you is a deep valley leading to a long plain and more trees. (Constitution Check: 10 to head down into the valley from this location or maybe you could try again in another location.)
Noon has come and gone as you toiled through the forest.

Kiwina looks out at the vally and fence, now that the others have pointed it out. Elyas feels much less pyro-happy once he realizes what these trees likely are. The treants did what they could to defend the island from the infection it faced, and should be allowed to rest in peace now. They sure did pick an unfortunate spot to sleep though... He thinks.
Elyas takes a look at the field to see if there might be an easier way down. if nothing is obvious he is fine with going down here. (perception of 24)

A friend departs - (DM Matt) d20=11 ; d20=15 ; d20=9 ; Friday September 21st, 2018 10:40:48 PM
The Petals decide to rest for the night while some of the party search for a place to settle. There are several comfortable places to settle in for the night but none with a lot of cover. The others patrol and search for tracks. Soon, several liontaur tracks appear. They are fresh and lead North.
Rolth or Tsak only Perception vs DC 11 Highlight to display spoiler: { After ten minutes of searching several liontaur approach stealthily. Rolth, using previous perception rolls is able to spot them and they know it. “What are you doing in Ag territory! You are not supposed to be here. Rolth spots some stealthily approaching liontaurs, and calls out in a friendly tone, "Greetings, cousins! Foreigner, I am not. Unlike those cretins in Kaga, who we are here to defeat, at Gnym of Gnym's bidding. Moreover, we bear the favor of Prince Michael, see? Come, let us parley and decide how we might best overcome the true interlopers here." He holds up his hand, showing the Queen's Ring and the Mark of Domi on his wrists. (Perception =23, Diplomacy = 11, hopefully with a circumstance bonus from the Ring and any Aid Another bonuses that others can provide)

Elyas does not see anyone coming, but moves to stand behind Rolth and watches for whoever is coming towards them. He does his best to aid Rolth by showing his hands with no weapons and trying to show a friendly smile. (7 to assist, apparently not all that good at talking to Taurs still...)

Hearing Rolth's words, Kiwina tries to look nonthreatening -- a difficult task for a centaur, but he at least does not grasp any weapons. "The witch turned a friend of ours into a half-plant. We have no reason to befriend her." (diplomacy = 19 to aid)

(Perception vs spoiler=18) Tsak reports back to the party the results of his scouting There are plenty of Liontaur tracks around, it seems like there are plenty of Ag and they patrol regularly. I suggest we speak to them before settling down for the night. Shouldn't be too long, there are some coming now.
He thinks Rolth has, as usual, come up with the right words when the Ag do approach. He waits to see the reaction of the Liontaurs. He has no weapon, but makes sure his hands are empty so that he can grab a sword quickly if required.

If the situation with the Ag is able to be resolved and the party can get some rest then Tsak will meditate before making his way to sleep. He will ponder how fast he may be able to move whilst maintaining control and balance if he were to make that a focus for a short time.
During his contemplation he is somewhat surprised to find how much he misses the gruff Sable, and wishes him well, wherever he is. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Ranger Spell: Longstrider

The Ag Clan - (DM Matt) d20=19 ; d3=3 ; d20=5 ; Monday September 24th, 2018 5:06:18 PM
The leader of the liontaur clan steps forward. He has a hardened appearance and he does not crack a smile, nor any emotion. “What clan to you reside from cousin, servant of Domi?” “You bear that artifact but who’s to say you didn’t steal it for this Queen Carlyn. The two liontaurs beside him spit in disgust and the mention of her name.
To Elyas he snaps, “Put your hands down. We are no threat to you.”
To Kiwina the witch has no friends. These hybrid minotaur, you call Bramble have been conscripted to do her bidding. She seems to be building an army to capture the island and destroy the Petals. “I know not of these Petals but they could be conscripted too. “They may work with her too,” says the young liontaur on the right.
Gothruk, Tsak and Falco hover near the campsite.
Finnian is a little further away than the others. Three more liontaur surround him and one attempts to restrain him but an older liontaur steps in front of him. “Arelos, no! Pardon Arelos has too much lion in him right now. He gets very aggressive, as does most liontaur as his age. My name is Bodetheus, I am the eldest of the clan. Not the leader, mind you but the smartest one.” Bodetheus than offers Finnian a handshake as the younger liontaur stomps offer to join the others. “We have one of the Petals several feet from here. I tried to restrain him but Bodetheus thought it was unwise.”

Rolth bows respectfully to the Ag clan leader, while maintaining eye contact, "Thank you for your welcome, Clan Chief. I hail from the Niheow clan to the southeast of these parts, although of late I have been travelling with these stout fellows, doing the bidding of Domi and striving to save the Wold from those who would threaten it. For we are the Eight Petaled Rose, recent Taurnament of Roses champions, and participants in the great battle to allow the cleansing and rebirth of the Triune Sar. I did not steal this wonderful artifact, but rather come to it freely given, by the Good Witch of Pym, who I understand received it legitimately on loan from the Prince himself. You have been tracking us, so you must know that we came from that direction. And that is also where we defeated some of Caryln's mercenaries. Now we are headed to her lair to put her paid, for she has troubled this land too long. I do not know why she wishes us ill, although we did perhaps destroy one of her favorite abominations in the Taurnament. In any event, she must be dealt with. I even learned a poem for the occasion."

Staying for the Night? - (DM Matt) Tuesday September 25th, 2018 7:40:05 PM
Arelos listens to Rolth’s song and seems to enjoy it. He then steps up and says, “I apologize for any misunderstanding. I notice that you can sing alright but can you dance?” He then proceeds to jig and jag a traditional liontaur dance. He is not awful at it. It wouldn’t make Dancing with the Taurs but for this tense moment it works to burst any sense of tension. The other liontaurs in the Ag clan begin to belly laugh as the younger liontaur continues to dance. After the chuckle the Clan Chief asks for the artifact the witch gave you. “The Good Witch of Pym,” says the Chief. “I have not heard her called that before. Um.. she said the Prince lent this to her. I doubt that but… she was under his employ for a long time. It’s very possible but I tend to think she stole it. She must trust you to hand over such an heirloom.” The Chief hands the artifact back to Rolth. Caryln has no sense of accomplishment. She only sees revenge. I myself thought the story of Caryln and the Prince was a fairytale. It seems that it is not.”
Kiwina While others negotiate, Kiwina looks around, assessing the number of Ag, how they are grouped, how they are armed, and whether any nearby group has Sable prisoner. (Perception = 22) Kiwina finds six liontaurs all with purple sashes over a golden, fur covered chest. They are heavily armored and carry long pikes as weapons. To Falco “It is very generous of you to offer healing. We do have a wounded liontaur broken from an attempt to climb to Bramble fence that surrounds Caryln. May we camp with you?” From behind the Chief a liontaur appears limping on three paws and holding the last one in the air.

Rolth chuckles along with the jig and jag, and accepts the ring back from the chief solemnly. "I did not know that it might be stolen, but am glad of your trust and hers. Meanwhile, it looks like it is time to share a meal, after trusty Falco sees to your injured clantaur. What's on the menu, Gothruk?"
After the meal, Rolth will turn to serious business. "So, it sounds like you have scouted the ruins of Kaga. What can you tell us of its layout, defenses, and the like? We can probably get across the bramble barrier, but will need to strike quickly after that, before they can organize a defense. Will you aid us in ridding the Isle of this menace?"

Seeing the liontaurs are neither afraid of the Petals nor particularly threatening, Kiwina relaxes some. Having seen the fondness the wemics have for nearly-raw meat, though, he picks a spot which puts them further from him than most of the Petals while the group eats. When discussion of breaching the fence and attacking the compound comes, he joins in, full of questions. "Do you have any idea how many defenders are here? Are they humanoid, or does she have taurs with her? Most of the creatures we fought in Pym were half-orcs. Have you heard anything about her abilities?"

As Rolth asks what's on the menu Gothruk sees a young buck having just jumped into the clearing and runs off towards it, tackling it and quickly breaking it's neck between his hands. He picks it up and takes it back to camp to prepare for a large meal. (I hope a natural 20 Survival check covers that)
He dosn't prepare it as well as he'd like (profession cook= 9) some of the best portions of meat carved off and cooked while the rest goes in a stew with some of the spices and seasoning he carries. He judges it serviceable and hopes the quantity will distract from the the poor quality.

The Ag clan enjoys the meal, even though it was under cooked. They seemed to enjoy it. Gothruk got numerous compliments on his hunting skills. The chief and injured taurs pour praise on the petals for the healing.

We can probably get across the bramble barrier, but will need to strike quickly after that, before they can organize a defense. Will you aid us in ridding the Isle of this menace?" “The bramble fence is a menace,” says the Chief. “From what we can tell its 10 foot tall and 5 foot thick.” There are small holes in the fence big enough to look through. Spies from our trees have been able to eyeball a roaming Bramble guard along the inside of the fence. The fence is 100 foot from the center. The castle is in the center.”
Kiwina "Do you have any idea how many defenders are here? Are they humanoid, or does she have taurs with her? Most of the creatures we fought in Pym were half-orcs. Have you heard anything about her abilities?" “We know little about Carlyn but know she is quite diplomatic. She has the Brambles convinced they will not be accepted by the taurs. I tell you this. They are not normal taurs. They are foreigners, but all taurs have been foreigners at one time of another. Anyways, Carlyn has a powerful scepter. Some of our sharp eyed spies have seen it.”
To Falco the Chief thanks him for the healing.

I'd specifically like to know more about the bramble fence. Has anyone tried to cross it that you know of? Is it a normal fence or has Caryln 'magiked' it somehow? I don't know how Magic oils work either but drinking it sounds like a bad idea.
Gothruk goes with Kiwina while he looks for tracks, until he realises that he'll probably need a torch to see very well and the light from that might alert the plantaurs inside. I'm not a fan of attacking at night, the plantaurs know how the camp is set out so will have an advantage in the dark. Many of us would need to carry torches to see and we don't know if being half plant let's them sense us in the dark. Perhaps dawn would be better, get some sleep and then attack just as the sun is rising. Still catching them as they're waking up but we'll be able to see.

The Bramble in the High Castle - (DM Matt) Friday September 28th, 2018 9:57:37 PM
The Petals and Ag clan settle in for the night. It’s a peaceful night’s sleep. Crickets chirping, birds flying overhead. Early in the morning, the darkness still hangs in the sky, the Petals are awoken by breakfast. A young liontaur, assigned to breakfast, tosses dried meat at everyone sleeping. The older liontaur are up, armed with torches, and chatting near the edges of the camp. The trip to the Bramble fence is uneventful. The morning starts to creep from the horizon when you finally reach within 500 feet of the ten foot fence. The Chief stops the group to work with the Petals on their next move. “Brave warriors, we would be honored to fight with you and help to defeat this cancer named Carlyn,” he adds. “I can post some guards on each side of us. The rest of us can enter after you have opened the fence.”
Finnian, Tsak Rezar and Gothruk volunteer to scout the area around the fence. Rolth Niheow mentions a couple potions the team has handy.
Kiwina excellent tracking skills do noticed several large paw tracks, likely created by the Ag clan. The Chief explained during the trip to the wall that they had patrolled the area quite a bit lately. There are hoof tracks as you near the wall but it’s hard to tell if it’s Bramble or possibly other taur.
Elyas will follow the others, keeping an eye out for danger as they move Falco flexes the little wings on his back. He confirms he cannot fly. He volunteers to hold oil of expeditious retreat Tsak Rezar asks, “What is the plan after we open a hole in the fence? And how does that oil work? Do I drink it?”
Gothruk Gore has concerns about drinking the oil and carrying torches near the fence.

Since they have not seen a need to confront the Ag, hopefully they will not realize we are anything other than Ag until we enter their camp." Kiwina speaks softly. "Are we sending a scout first, and are we all going to be at the fence when we take down a section? How big a section do we want? I'm thinking wide enough for our entire front line, whoever we decide that will be."

Best to go in when no patrol is around, but if we go with a wider front then we will be ready if someone is there to try to stop us immediately.

Rolth also likes this plan. "Yes, let us send up invisible or stealthy scouts. Once they signal that the coast is clear on the other side of the bramble wall, then the rest of us can advance, open the bramble wall with the potion, and get into the place quickly. I agree that opening it at the width of our front line sounds good. I'm happy to be in that line, who else wants that role? I think we need to try to get at the witch as soon as possible. With her down, some of the others might come out of their stupor and turn to our side, like our new friend, Ramsey."
Rolth also corrects himself re the "oil" of expeditious retreat, which is actually a "Philter" meant to be drunk. He also corrects his suggestion of who should get the oil of mage armor--he meant to say Gothruk might want to use it, since he doesn't wear armor of any sort. Either way, the oil should be applied externally, not drunk. Rolth has no idea whether it is flammable, but assumes that once applied, it will fade away and not pose such a hazard.
Assuming we follow something similar to Kiwina's plan. Rolth will cast Expeditious Retreat omn himself immediately prior to the use of the potion to open the bramble wall.

Disappointed that he doesn't get to taste the magic armour oil (I'll bet it tastes like ale!) Tsak is determined to get his mitts on some sort of drink. I can scout our way to the wall, then how about I use an invis potion and then stand on Gothruk's shoulders to look over the fence? I can see in the dark and if everyone is quiet I'm sure we can avoid a patrol long enough to make an opening and get our force thru to the inside?
Once inside it sounds like we are sprinting to the castle for a brute force attack. I have been working on this problem and think I can keep up with the taurs for a short time, enough to get from the wall to the castle, what about everyone else? Finnian, Elyas, Falco? We don't want you to get left behind...
Tsak is exhausted from using up all the words, and settles back to see what ideas he has generated in the team.

As your attention is drawn to it, you can see what appears to be Brambles on the other side of the wall of thorns, they have not spotted you yet, but when you try and get through the wall, you suspect they may begin to notice you.
If you try to go through the wall, make a DC 15 Stealth Check, if you are not using a weapon to cut through it (either hands or the potion) you gain a +2 Circumstance Bonus.
(OOC: The Bramble wall is a very tough, pliable, tangled brush bearing needle-sharp thorns as long as a human's finger. Any creature forced into or attempting to move through a wall of thorns takes piercing damage per round of movement equal to 25 minus the creature's AC. Dexterity and dodge bonuses to AC do not count for this calculation. (Creatures with an AC of 25 or higher, without considering Dexterity and dodge bonuses, take no damage from contact with the wall.) Creatures can force their way slowly through the wall by making a Strength check as a full-round action. For every 5 points by which the check exceeds 20, a creature moves 5 feet (up to a maximum distance equal to its normal land speed). Of course, moving or attempting to move through the thorns incurs damage as described above. A creature trapped in the thorns can choose to remain motionless in order to avoid taking any more damage. Any creature within the area of the spell when it is cast takes damage as if it had moved into the wall and is caught inside. In order to escape, it must attempt to push its way free, or it can wait until the spell ends. Creatures with the ability to pass through overgrown areas unhindered can pass through a wall of thorns at normal speed without taking damage. The Bramble wall can be breached by slow work with edged weapons. Chopping away at the wall creates a safe passage 1 foot deep for every 10 minutes of work. Normal fire cannot harm the barrier, but magical fire burns it away in 10 minutes.)

Rolth whispers to the others, "It sounds like we aren't going to be able to avoid a fight, but at least we can take them by surprise. I'm going to drink the potion and drop the wall in a moment, so get ready to move in and crush them." Rolth will give folks a round to prepare, look around to get a thumbs up from the Petals, then--assuming all is in readiness--will drink the potion of diminish plants to bring down the wall of thorns. He will use the 150' radius semi-circle version, and exclude any part of the wall immediately in front of us that stretches beyond the frontage of our first line attackers.
(OOC--To save you time, here is the effect (prune plants version):
Prune Growth: This version of the spell causes normal vegetation within long range (400 feet + 40 feet per level) to shrink to about one-third normal size, becoming untangled and less bushy. The affected vegetation appears to have been carefully pruned and trimmed. This version of diminish plants automatically dispels any spells or effects that enhance plants, such as entangle, plant growth, and wall of thorns.
At your option, the area can be a 100-foot-radius circle, a 150-foot-radius semicircle, or a 200-foot-radius quarter-circle. You may also designate portions of the area that are not affected.)
