Scene 3: The Antechamber

The Entrance
Tuesday August 28th, 2018 12:06:50 PM

The Agents looks into the room, quickly lighted by Pru’s dancing lights spell. There is a momentary shadow from behind as the giants watch from the doorway to see how the Agents fare. Pompous points out the scrapes on the floor as Trayvin points out that the statues are actually golems. Nikolai doesn’t like the giants behind them, but he looks around the area for any sign of human footprints. He does not see any. Perception, DC 22, Nikolai only: Highlight to display spoiler: {There are no footprints, but as you look for them, you can see that some of the piles of trash and debris are much newer than others…}.

Anna and Sigvar talk about some options for giants and golems. Sigvar moves up with Michael to examine the door beyond the golems. However, as soon as Michael and Sigvar get close to the golems, they immediately start moving, the two of them standing up tall, raising their large, bulbous fists!

OOC:
Dang it. I have an Excel map. The link appears below. However, I can’t seem to do anything with the map. When I try and copy and paste it tells me to use Ctrl-V – and it tells me that WHEN I press Ctrl-V. So there’s the map. It doesn’t have you on it. The permissions should be set so that you can edit it and place yourselves on the map. Oh, and the space at the bottom has the giants standing outside, but I can’t place them, either, other than some text...so yes, we’re in combat, your move. Place yourselves on the map if you’re able with Michael and Sigvar starting adjacent to the golems and post away actions for combat round 1!

Sigvar's suggestion is a good one, and Pru wastes no time in putting a Wall of Ice across the entrance.

It was too late to prepare, but not too late for a warning. "They will try to slow us down, magically. Pru might be able to counteract the effect. I don't know if there are any spells that will work on them directly, so I think we follow Sigvar's advice and just smash them down one at a time. Adamantine will be best if you have it."

The giants can just retreat behind their walls if it comes to battle, we need to get them into the temple of entirce them outside their walls to have any hope. then the golems come alive, oh boy! Michael flanks with Sigvar, his little +1 weapons won't do much good and rock things have not organs nor blood, but if he can keep them occupied while Sigvar gets to work it will be a job well done.
fighting defensively +2 To ac.=24 I also have combat expertise and a +8 bab so I get -2 to hit and +2 more to AC =26

first attack, main hand

off hand same bonus due to magic item negating TWF penalties.
Short sword +1 to hit AC 29 for 3 points of damage. add 23 for flanking damage.

second attack +9 -6 =+3 attack bonus
Rapier +1 to hit ac 20 for 3 points of damage. add 23 for flanking damage.

notice the rolls above do not take into account the Agent flanking bonus which I have added to the rolls in the text. the bonus is +4. also I read over golems and they have construct traits, it says nothing in the writeup about constructs being immune to rogues backstab abiltiy(flanking damage). Ps> I like the new roller showing the rolls like that.

Not particularly knowledgeable in rock things, more like animal things and undead, Nikolai at least assumes that sharp things don't work well against stone. Unfortunately his magic kama is a sharp thing, not a blunt one.

Nor was he quite ready for them to react, expecting the trigger to be messing with the door, so he instinctively pulls out his +2 Kama. He didn't relish punching rocks.
'Y'know, it could be they were just moving into position to block the doors rather than actually attack, but too late for that now,' he muses as he quickly steps up next to Michael and takes a swing at the golem with his magic kama to see what happens.

Sigvar wastes no time and quickly draws his sword. It clangs against the massive golem, but one strike knocks a chunk of stone off the construct. Pru moves and places a wall of ice up between the group and the giants, effectively blocking the entrance. Pompous lets a number of arrows fly, but he can tell they are doing little to affect the pile of stone. Trayvin shouts some advice and prepares to attack. Michael easily slips behind the creature Sigvar has attacked and tries to stab it repeatedly with his dagger. He can indeed tell the dagger isn’t quite working against the stone like it would against flesh. Anna grows stronger. Nikolai tries to stab the creature, but realizes that his kama isn’t going to do much, either. Akir prepares for battle as well, momentarily fading out of sight.

The attacked golem looks around through its gem eyes and a burst of energy goes out from it. With a grinding of stone against stone, a large fist slams down and connects with Nikolai, hitting him hard (20 damage). The other moves up behind Sigvar, stone sliding across the floor. Sigvar feels the wind from a massive fist flying behind him, just missing him.

OOC:
Stone Golems: AC 26; DR 10/adamantine; 10’ reach
#1 Damage: 51
#2 Damage: 0

I see Sigvar’s longsword is adamantine & Trayvin has adamantine. If anyone else can overcome the DR, please let me know, otherwise I’ll assume you cannot and deduct the 10 per attack damage. They are susceptible to flanking damage & criticals.

Pompous arrows: 11-10=1, 10-10=0, 10-10=0, total damage applied after DR: 1 + 1 shock + 6 shock + 5 shock = 13

I’m not completely sure on how to apply the flanking damage and DR. If that is an additional damage, then I would think DR would apply separately. In other words, Michael’s first attack is 6 damage (-10 DR) + 15 flanking damage (-10 DR) for a total of 5 damage. But if it ISN’T separate damage, it would be 21 damage (-10 DR) for a total of 11 damage. I’ve applied it the first way, but I’m open to other interpretations. Michael damage: 6-10=0, 15-10=5, 3-10=0, 23-10=13, total applied: 18

Nikolai damage: with a d6+5 str facing a 10DR, anything other than a 6 will result in zero damage, so I applied 1 damage here.

Sigvar, Michael, Nikolai: Will save, DC 17 or be affected by slow: staggered, can only make 1 move or standard action each round (cannot take full-round actions, which means only 1 attack). Also, -1 to attack rolls, AC, and reflex saves. Move at half normal speed.

OOC: Michaels avatar is on a disk. Also, I take sneak attack damage as a form of precision damage that a rogue can get by exploiting weaknesses in his opponent. So I think the DR 10 would apply to each attack not to the weapon damage and sneak attack damage respectively. if the blade had some kind of poison effect it would be subject to the DR as well as the weapon damage. but the weapon damage is all that is being rolled here, the extra dice are just indicating how well I did with the attack. Another way to look at it would be that if he got a save vs the extra damage it would be separate and thus subject to the DR. but it's not so that means its all in the single attack.

Michael feels the world begin to speed up but with focus and determination he fights off the effect. then Pru's spell takes effect and the world slows down, he welcomes it with fierce glee. A larger stone fist whistles past Michael to hit Nikolai, he drops his defence to better quickly end the threat.

The creature is stone, but magical stone nonetheless, it moves via magic, keeping stone joints whole and together and allowing the hard unyielding stone to flex when needed to allow movement. still, it is stone and cracks form from the imperfections in the magic and stone. While his Rapier and his short sword cannot penetrate the stone, they can certainly worry a crack into something a bit more deadly and mess around with the wizardry that keeps the joints together. With speed as his ally now, he should be more effective. he works on a joint. leveraging the blades in a crack to widen it.

Pru sees the power emanating from the golems and quickly casts haste to counteract the effect. Fortunately, no one was affected, so they are now hasted! Sigvar continues hacking away at the creature, his sword lopping off large chunks of stone. Michael continues to focus on the joints of the monster and his sword manages to find some weak spots. His final blow is enough to break off the arm joint. The arm falls off and the massive thing simply stops moving.

Pompous, thinking quickly, changes targets to the other stone beast. However, perhaps because of changing targets, his arrows fly wide, deep, and around. Trayvin casts another spell and moves behind the other stone creature. Anna turns into a dinosaur and realizes she is standing in a pool of water – the wall of ice is already starting to melt in the heat. She can also hear pounding on the outside of the ice wall. Nikolai steps back as the creature stops moving.

The other beast, standing in place now behind Sigvar, sends out another wave of energy (slow, will save, DC 17 or slowed for Trayvin and Sigvar). The two massive fists swing, but Sigvar manages to duck and weave out of their way completely!

About the wall....remember "Even when the ice has been broken through, a sheet of frigid air remains. Any creature stepping through it (including the one who broke through the wall) takes 1d6 points of cold damage + 1 point per caster level (no save)." I thought it damaged those attacking it but it seems only when they step through the hole. As they are desert giants they might take increased cold damage. They will likely be angry. Not that SIgvar cares, he is pretty convinced the giants would have back stabbed them.
Also thank goodness Sigvar is power attacking, he can;t roll damage to save his life it seems.

Pru continues with magical aid for the Agents. Nikolai moves back to the ice wall and prepares for giants to appear. When he looks at the wall, he doesn’t see many cracks in it yet, so it doesn’t look like the wall is going to come crashing down immediately.

Michael dives and tumbles, stabbing his rapier into another stone leg joint. He calls out a plan at the same time Nikolai prepares for the giants. Trayvin also continues the massive, coordinated assault on the remaining stone creature. Dinosaur-Anna slips forward and joins the attack, slamming into the monster and trying to trip it, but her massive tail just bounces off the leg of the creature. Akir feels the need for speed and chops some additional stone bits off the monster. Pompous moves and prepares for the giants as well.

The remaining golem mindlessly continues its assault on Sigvar. The Agents do not let up on their assault against the remaining stone golem. Pru fires a few magic missiles, Trayvin hits it hard, Anna slams into it, Sigvar swings and his sword clangs against the metal. Akir continues to hack at it while Nikolai and Pompous carefully watch the slowly melting wall of ice.

After the continued assault, the second stone golem creaks and grinds to a halt and it stops moving, missing large chunks of stone. There is a momentary silence in the large, dimly lit room. The pounding on the ice wall has stopped. After a few seconds, there is a crack. Looking over at the doors beyond where the golems were standing, you can see a light puff of dust and dirt as the doors release and shift. They do not open, but there is a tiny space between the doors – apparently, they just unlocked…

I propose that Sigvar, Anna, Trayvin and Nikolai play dead, while Pru, Akir and myself greet our large friends. if they prove to be decidedly unfriendly you guys wake up and we'll take them out.

Has there been any sign that the scouts were here, either dead or alive?
If it took killing the golems to get the door to unlock, why are there marks on the floor that indicate that the door has opened before? Are those marks recent? DO the golems appear to be slowly rebuilding themselves?
IC
Sigvar considers Michael's plan. It would be an excellent test of the Giant's motives, but it would mean he lies to them. This would tarnish his honor and betray the trust Gargul set in him when the god granted him his powers.
" A good plan Michael, but I will not deceive them. Some of you made bargains with them to sign papers once we opened the door to the temple. We have done so and I expect they will sign those papers, probably without reading them based on their desperation to open the doors. I hope those papers are readily available, as I doubt they will let us come back with them later."
" Which leads me to my other concern, which I could not voice in front of them. They seemed to detect on the edge of evil when I looked at them. They are belligerent, territorial and I believe had we not stood up to them they would have done us harm. No idle passer by is going to stand up to them like we did and I think that would mean that the giants would at the very least take advantage of them, either by robbing them or possibly even killing them. That as the impression I got. As such we can not in good conscience leave them here. We need to either make them move on, or kill them to protect anyone else that might enter this valley."
"How did the resat of you read their answers?"

The Entrance
Tuesday September 4th, 2018 1:19:00 PM

The Agents consider what to do next.

OOC:
Mostly OOC answers today.

Sigvar asked about signs of the scouts. The group hasn’t really had time to explore and search the large room. Remember, it is partially dark with flickering dancing lights. There are piles of debris in various places, some look very old, some not as old. It will take a few minutes to search the room.

The marks on the floor near the large doors aren’t necessarily from the doors opening. They may have been from the golems moving. Examining them more closely would support the idea that the golems had moved across them recently.

The golems appear to be nothing but piles of stone at this point and do not appear to be rebuilding.

The inside doors are very large and tall and the giants could easily walk through them.

The wall of ice I picture as sort of opaque instead of a clear window. I imagine that you can see light and figures through it, but you really can’t clearly see through it.

Nikolai has the impression that at least one of these giants is smart enough to realize the Thumb leader was sort of bluffing but that didn't bother him very much. The giants saw how quickly they dealt with the two golems and should be smart enough now to not mess with the Fist just yet.

If the giant's reaction is not hostile, that is, they stay put and talk, Nikolai retrieves his Everburning Torch and hands it Trayvin to search the place with some light.

The Entrance
Wednesday September 5th, 2018 12:38:08 PM

Pompous heads over to the large stone doors. Pru moves to the wall of ice and the entrance on the far side of the room. Michael heads over to the unanimated stone golems. Sigvar heads to the sides of the room, looking at the debris piles. Trayvin starts searching another area of the room. Stegosaurus Anna stands still in the middle of the room while Nikolai joins Pru in greeting the giants.

When Pompous heads to the doorway, he can smell things that are old, dank, and dusty. Clearly this door has not been opened in a very, very long time. He tries to peer through the doorway, but the space beyond is completely and utterly dark. Clearly there are no sources of light beyond the doorway and without a source himself, he cannot see anything past the opening. The doors open outward if he should wish to open them (OOC: I wasn’t sure with that description if you wanted to open them or not).

Pru dismisses the ice wall and greets the giants in a friendly way. One of them takes a step forward and looks around the room. He can see the Agents scattered around the room and then he spots the unmoving stone golems right next to Pompous and Michael. He looks at the Stegosaurs in confusion. He says, "So, you opened the doors for us. That is good. Maybe we will let you be our friend now as you desire." Sense Motive, DC 22: Highlight to display spoiler: {He appears to be slightly less confident and impressed with the Agents.}. A second giant remains just outside the entrance way. You can hear small rocks tumbling around outside, likely the other two walking around.

Michael starts digging around the golems, not wasting time and going right for the eyes. One of the golems has bright red eyes and the other has deep green eyes. Indeed, they are gems and Michael can easily pry them out of the stone now. Appraise, DC 20: Highlight to display spoiler: {Two emeralds and two rubies with a value of 7,000 gold each.}

Trayvin and Sigvar search the debris in the room. Various items here make it look like different people and things over the years have used this entrance as a resting point or even an extended campsite. There are bits of fire remains, some bits of trash, pieces of string, some woodchips as if from carving, and bits of leather here and there. Nothing really looks to be of value. There are a few bones in a couple of places, but they are very small bones, likely from a squirrel or rabbit. Inside the door Sigvar does find a relatively new, but worn pack that looks like one that is used by scouts from the Agents. It is empty and appears in reasonable shape (it has not been torn, ripped, and does not have any blood on it or anything else). It almost looks like it was just taken off and dropped there.

Sigvar ponders the pack and it's state. If the scout left it behind, but took the contents, why? The pack is undamaged, he sees no reason to leave it especially since a standard load out for a scout would be too hard to carry without the pack.
Profession soldier 17 Why would the scout drop the pack but keep the contents?
It seems to Sigvar much more likely that someone else either took the pack and removed the contents and then tossed the pack, maybe because it was too small to be useful, like a giant might find it. Or that the giants found it and just tossed it there.
Perception 24
Sigvar looks the giants he can see over more closely, again applying his ability to DETECT EVIL. Are they wearing any gear he would expect the scouts to be carrying? Swords as knives, rope as a belt, tents as shirts maybe, anything that would be in the pack he found?

The Entrance! (DM Warren)
Thursday September 6th, 2018 10:21:34 PM

The Giants don't seem aggressive, but they are eyeing the temple doors and the depths that have been revealed. We don't know your scouts, but if they invaded our camp, they probably ended up in the stewpot. They don't seem at all concerned about this, taking it as a matter of course.

The Giants aren't evil, they just defend what they decide is their territory fiercely. The pack, once examined, is clearly from an Agents scout. You would guess that he got caught sneaking about the Giants' camp. They ignored the pack, or didn't find it, or didn't care about it. We will allow you into our temple, but any gold and gems are ours. You may keep whatever other trinkets you find.

Pompous, directing his light beyond the doors, sees little in the dimly lit room. The light filters through dust and debris from the opening doors and the only source of light is the outdoors -- you see no signs of light or windows inside. The stale air assaults your senses as you look into the space beyond, but mostly can see only shadows and darkness. He vaguely sees the outline of what looks like benches or pews.

He fears the agents have backed themselves into a corner. if they are a threat, the agents have effectively camouflaged their true intentions, now we are perhaps leaving a treat to the community behind us. still it's not for him to question why, it's just for him to do and make die.

Pru is feeling a little sick. "Stewpot?" she echoes. "You--you eat people? I mean, I--oh, dear." She is silent a moment, then says quietly. "Well, if there's no helping them, we'll get on with the exploration."

Pru turns to the doors. She re-tasks her Dancing Lights to shine in the doorway, so that they illuminate both the antechamber and the space beyond the doors.

Nikolai ponders things a bid. If the scouts got here before the giants, that would explain the pack inside. Otherwise there'd be clear evidence of them outside. But how did they get inside without fighting the golems? Do the golems regenerate once a day? That would explain the agents getting through and the golems reforming after that.

"Oh, I see, we get the doors open, which you couldn't, but you want all the gems and gold. That could leave both of us with nothing, or you with all the stuff and us nothing for all the work. Nothing doing. The doors are open, you go in. Have fun. See if we care? This place is yours, you do the rest of the work."

" You MIGHT have eaten the people we have been looking for all along, the ones you have not even answered questions about until we did your dirty work. But you apparently eat anything, or anyone you like, so you can't be sure."
"What I am pretty sure of is that the scout was here, because his pack is here. What I am also pretty sure of is that you have just said you will eat anyone that shows up here that isn't powerful enough to stop you. "
"That answers all of the questions I was sent here to get answers to, and my path is pretty clear, evil or not."

His hand drops to the hilt of his sword. As he steps in front of Prudence he draws his blade.
"Orders Sir?" he asks without turning.

Akir is for once, of the same mind as Sigvar. He often thought the paladin a bit too brash, but there was no better place to settle grim work with the giants than here and now.

Akir drinks an enlarge person potion, nullifying a key advantage of the giants.

"Nikolai, they just more or less admitted to eating one of ours. Something, which, I point out with no satisfaction, I warned you all about earlier." He adjusts his grip on his scythe. "I can't in good conscience walk away."

Pru is a little bit put off by the thought of eating an intelligent race, and Nikolai gives an ultimatum. His fellow Agents however, aren't about to let the death of one of their own go unpunished. Akir and Sigvar prepare for fighting the giants to end their menace to the area.

However, the posturing on both sides comes to a halt at a sudden scream from inside the doors. Just inside where Pompous had disappeared. Or is it more of a moan?

Mailed Fist assignments are often fraught with danger. It's expected. Some of that danger is getting caught and eaten by some marauding monster. Because these 'marauding monsters' are intelligent, does that change anything?

"Our scouts have orders to investigate what has been attacking the farms around here. If he was sneaking, as you say, it was only to see if you were the ones doing the marauding. You could have stripped him and sent him on his way as a lesson, but to kill him? One who would not do you harm? That changes things. You wanted the doors open, well there they are. You go in, find your way home, and get yourselves lost. If you don't find anything in there to get you home, we'll send you to your eternal home. If WE go in there, we keep everything except what you are looking for to get home. That's the deal. If you don't like it, tough. We'll put you in a stewpot just like you did one of ours. Michael's attempt at Stealth is somewhat ruined by him issuing forth several questions and drawing attention. If he'd like to bluff to hide the motivations for his movements, he is welcome to do that.

We know not how we came to these lands. But a sign has told us that the way back to our kind lies here. We do not know the method, but just that we should follow.

Trayvin and Anna seek recompense for their deeds. For their part, they do not acknowledge having done anything wrong.

Nikolai tells them in no uncertain terms that they will help them be gone from this place, but they have forfeited claim to anything else in the temple. Pru just wants to get it over with. From what you can tell, these giants are not evil, and once they strike a bargain, they will abide by its terms.

Had he not intended harm, he would have approached in the open and asked our intentions. Regardless, we can accept these terms. We have no wish to stay here. Tell your men to stand aside and we will enter. Or we will stand aside until you find our means of departure.

Trayvin is ready, and waits to see if Nikolai would like the Agents to go first or let the giants lead the way in. Either way, Trayvin will back him up.

Well, finally the Agents were getting somewhere!

[/b]"I hardly think a scout would approach a band of giants friendly like when the word was that giants were on a rampage around here. Be as that may be, what happened, happened. I more than happy to let you through, but due to your size, it may be pointless. What you are looking for may be well hidden in small narrow chambers and then it would be a waste of your time. We'll have much better success through narrow tunnels, corridors, and dark places. I don't mind having a strong arm of a giant like yourself in helping fight off evil, but in this case, I think Nikolai's Fist has a better chance."[/b]

He surveys his Team for approval of the deal, then turns back to the giant. "Tell us about this sign. Can you show it to us? If not, can you draw it for us? We'll need to know what signs to look for. This is a temple and may have many differing signs."

We know not what the sign itself may be, only that it will lead us back to our kind. It may be a map, or portal, or some kind of teleportation magic. Our omens are not specific. He shrugs.

Most of the group is willing to let the giants explore for themselves, but Nikolai makes a fair point. Perhaps they are too big to fit in, and will need assistance anyway.

Anna sniffs around the door, but smells naught but dust and decay. With Sigvar having pressed the doors mostly closed, there is no light to speak of going in. If there's anything else inside, it's certainly not making any noise.

Michael props the door open a crack, but finds no more traps than he found before. As he plays the light into the room, he can see what looks like a few moldering benches, but the room is wider than his light can reach. At the very end of where his light reaches in the back of the room, he can dimly see a raised stone area, maybe an altar? And near it is a large, dark, slowly moving shape.

Akir points to the entrance.

"At this point Nikolai has entered us into something of a verbal contract in the field. Thumbs have had this authority for some time. They take a large risk when doing it, because when doing so they put themselves into the position of representing the Mailed Fist without actually having the Mailed Fists blessing. A direct hit deals 1d6 points of fire damage. Every creature within 5 feet of the point where the flask hits takes 1 point of fire damage from the splash. On the round following a direct hit, the target takes an additional 1d6 points of damage. If desired, the target can use a full-round action to attempt to extinguish the flames before taking this additional damage. Extinguishing the flames requires a DC 15 Reflex save. Rolling on the ground provides the target a +2 bonus on the save. Leaping into a lake or magically extinguishing the flames automatically smothers the fire.

Two oozes attempt to slam the frontliners, but have no luck getting around their armor. (and they don't have touch attacks against the armor for some reason) A forth one oozes its way from the back of the room, but can't get in range.

The giants are sitting back, since it seems like the Agents have this well in hand.

Things seem to be going well, until an eerie moan permeates the entryway. Everyone behind Anna and Sigvar feel the effect, though Pompous recognizes it and is able to shake it off.

Nikolai, Pru, Michael, Trayvin, Akir: DC 18 will save or be panicked for 5 rounds. flee along a random path, 1d8 determines direction

At 3rd level, a paladin is immune to fear (magical or otherwise). Each ally within 10 feet of her gains a +4 morale bonus on saving throws against fear effects. This ability functions only while the paladin is conscious, not if she is unconscious or dead.
Anna and Michael are within 10 feet of Sigvar and get this bonus to their save.

Fortitude save 34 for half damage

Sigvar avoids the worst of the creatures touch but feels it's unclean power damage him.

Knowledge religion 28
SIgvar identifies the undead creature and moves to destroy a foe of his god. He draws his blade and SMITES the evil undead creature, swinging to strike it.

Smite Evil
Once per day, a paladin can call out to the powers of good to aid her in her struggle against evil. As a swift action, the paladin chooses one target within sight to smite. If this target is evil, the paladin adds her Charisma bonus (if any) to her attack rolls and adds her paladin level to all damage rolls made against the target of her smite. If the target of smite evil is an outsider with the evil subtype, an evil-aligned dragon, or an undead creature, the bonus to damage on the first successful attack increases to 2 points of damage per level the paladin possesses. Regardless of the target, smite evil attacks automatically bypass any DR the creature might possess. In addition, while smite evil is in effect, the paladin gains a deflection bonus equal to her Charisma modifier (if any) to her AC against attacks made by the target of the smite. If the paladin targets a creature that is not evil, the smite is wasted with no effect. The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability.

Even with Sigvar's aura, Pru is not quite able to resist the effects of the fear and cowers in the corner.

Sigvar, being immune to such paltry things as fear, is glad of a target for his weapon, which he plunges through the ghost with purifying force. In one blow, the ghost poofs into dust!

With Sigvar's help, Michael overcomes his fear, but also has no target. Instead (if he wants), he moves to the other ghost to offer Pru some protection and slices it once.

Trayvin knows that they cannot afford to be running around willy nilly, and calls upon divine power to suppress the chilling effects of the ghost.

Panicked, but able to act anyway with Trayvin's help, Nikolai has to decide what to do!

Anna splatters one of the oozes (reflex 21 or 6 acid damage) but gets a bit dizzy and misses the other.

Michael looks around for a target and sees nothing but ooze. Maybe all the shifting between animal brains is making Anna crazy? The (black) ooze seems to forget it's on fire for a moment before the flames start up again. I did roll for last round - it'll take 4 more now

Pru stays tucked in her corner and lobs another explosion at the oozes, easily targeting all three. Miraculously, ooze (purple) avoid some of the damage. (Nat 20 save)

Whatever is having its way with them is leaving the Agents stymied. The invisibility purge revealed nothing, yet something is quite clearly hitting them. Thinking outside the box, Pru angles her fire into the area where something might be. She strikes paydirt, and is rewarded with a slight burning smell and a sound like steam escaping a kettle.

Michael and Akir follow the sounds and strike where they think the creatures may be, Michael getting confirmation of his suspicion when he feels one smack him in the face as he re positions himself 13 damage from an AoO!. Total Concealment - 50% miss chance (1-50 on d100 misses)

Anna puts down the last ooze and casts her gaze about, hoping to provide some flanking. DC21 reflex or 8 acid damage

Nikolai looks around for an attacker below, but the hits don't seem to be coming from there, and the wounds are large impacts, not the creepy mysterious cuts and welts that the ghosts were causing.

Another round of blows comes, but they don't come close to getting past Anna's armor. Two 2s! Sigvar detects no evil, but he may have better luck striking back after watching where Anna is being struck. Roll miss chance: 1-50 on a d100 misses

It seems they don't like being hit back though, because Pru becomes a target now. 11 damage

Something is tickling their minds though, with this new information to be had. DC23 Knowledge Planes: Highlight to display spoiler: {This must be an invisible stalker, a creature whose natural invisibility can't be purged.}

He exits the temple, pushing past the cannibal giants outside the door if necessary and proceeds to a spot near the oasis they found. Using his shovel (yup, he has one) he will dig 2 complete graves. Next he will re-enter the temple and carefully collect the bones, carry them to the graves and respectfully places them within. He will bury them and say a funeral prayer over them. Everyone pitches in to help give the skeletons a proper burial, and between Sigvar and Trayvin, rites are said that cover a broad enough spectrum to hopefully give these spirits some rest.

The Giants even take Michael's words to heart, and assist in placing some large rocks on top of the graves to mark them, though they don't quite understand the custom.

The opals and pearls are worth about 7,000 gp all told. The rest of the loot gets stowed for use or selling later, and Sigvar preps himself for fighting other things that don't mind getting sliced, but hate getting bashed.

Nikolai organizes a healed up party to go over the entire chamber again, but finds nothing else of value. They do see a second cloaker up in the rafters, but it apparently decided not to attack, not being big enough to envelop Sigvar or Stego-Anna, and now it has no backup. The Agents dispatch it easily (if they so choose).

He also asks again about the second rod, but it will need some serious study from someone magically inclined.

Michael tries to communicate with the Cloaker, but it either can't understand or chooses not to respond. Anna connects with the idea of finding a monstrous regiment, and Akir is quite amused at the notion.

Pru just finds it ridiculous. Akir works with Pru to identify the rod as one of Metamagic Enlarge.

Nikolai and Pompous understand that the creature is too dangerous to leave here and dispose of it quickly, putting an end to the monster thumb. For now...?

Trayvin is ready to move on to find the way to send these Giants home.

You know Anna, the Mailed Fist used to have a Monster Regiment, Bear company, Runkuk the undying was the commander, had all sorts of monstrous things working for us, most of them got laid off when the axe came down. Runkuk was a hammer, he used them as Shock troops. but things like cloakers, doppelgangers things like that, I think would work well in Snake Regiment. " Not murdering scout eating Giants, Trayvin. Something like that would mean I would be mustering out when we get back rather than just transferring to a more lawful command."

Sigvar says nothing as Michael blathers on about Runkuk. Sigvar had been in bear regiment, and had been those 'shock troops'. He knew Runkuk, had been friends, even as close as adopted family with some of the people that the commander had killed at the onset of the civil war when they decided to stand up to him about the Fist claiming land. He remembers the fear he felt when those people were executed, and the relief that he had stayed silent.
He now feels the shame that he had been too weak in his convictions to be among them.

Sigvar shoulders his way forward when none of the scouts step up. He passes Nikolai and pushes on down the tunnel, sword and shield ready, allowing Nikolai's torch to light his way. The sooner this foolishness was over the sooner they could return to the only home he knew.

He pauses in the middle of the group thinking about it, then moves forward to get in front of Sigvar,

Let me do it, you big lumbering lummox, if things go pear shaped I'm small, you can pull me out or kill what's eating me, if you get in trouble I'd have problems getting one of your hooves out..

After Anna's communication, several of the Agents bust out various types of foodstuffs. It seems to eat just about anything organic, so rations are tossed on the ground and it slithers over them and they quickly disappear. Trayvin is able to create some water for it as well, which it needs just as much as sustenance.

They come to the conclusion that whatever brought the Giants here must have also brought this creature. Now there's even more motivation to find the portal, as the spore mound hasn't harmed anyone that they know of.

The creature is content to wait for now, since you guys are the best chance it has of getting home, or at least into more favourable conditions. Being quite eagle-eyed, Nikolai spots a glimmer on the ground behind the mound. He finds a small orange rock, expertly cut into a perfect prism.

Beyond, the corridor continues to twist and turn into the darkness.
