Upon seeing the ghostly children departing, you are certain that the foul magic is broken, and with the chopping down of the tree, you know that this evil is no longer a threat to the Wold.
At first the wood from the tree doesn't want to burn, whither as a result of some lingering magic,or simply because the wood is green, it's impossible to say, but eventually, Elyngael is able to get it to ignite. The wood burns with a thick black and acrid smoke accompanied by the smell of burning rubber, and it burns with an intensity unusual for green wood.
As you ponder the truth behind the tree/construct, and search your memories for any memory of the tree, you realize that the thing was indeed old, and yet for reasons that escape you, you have no memory of the tree.
As you are preparing to depart, you see a cloud of dust, coming from the direction of the Tree of Parting, as it gets closer, you begin to see the silhouette of a horse and rider, and as the rider gets closer, you recognize the livery of the rider as that of a guard from the tree. He brings an urgent request to return home, as a dignitary from Fair Meadows has arrived seeking audience with the Tree Wardens, and refuses to talk to anyone but the Wardens. The Guard informs you that the dignitary has a room at the Tree Top Tavern, and he awaits your arrival.

The party makes haste for home, and arrives at the Tree just before dark, you head directly to the Tree Top Tavern, and after asking Ciyradyl, she leads you to the dignitary's room.

A knock on the door summons a human male in his early 30's, who introduces himself as Caleb Amethyst, he invites you in, and offers you a seat, and before she leaves he asks Ciyradyl to bring food and beverages for everyone, and to add it to his bill. Moments later, servants arrive with a cart full of food, the finest the tavern has to offer, as well as a flagon or two of ale, and a decanter or two of wine.

After a fine meal, and over a glass of after dinner port, Caleb addresses the Wardens. I was asked by my lord to first address the one known as Owen Marcellus. Owen, your homeland, the Fair Meadows has a new lord in it's capital city, Stonebriar. He is a hard, but just and fair man named Hiram Tubalcain. He invites you and the Tree Wardens to his citadel, to see for yourself, what the place of your birth has become under his leadership.

Atlas tries to put on his best face, but this group knows it cannot last for long. He hates pompous politicians, nobles, and anyone else that thinks they are better than others. Flaunting how much coin you have in your pockets, like this man is, just sets him off. He ensures that anything he eats, he does so with a little extra open mouth chewing, and when he speaks he makes it a bit more rough than he normally would. He avoids making eye contact with Armand, knowing he wouldn't approve.

Once the man speaks to Owen, Atlas speaks up, "Owen, I would love to see your homeland, and it seems like your homeland might need to see us. I have much more to say, but I would like to save that for private." He looks over at the man. "No offense intended, but I don't know you and you give a certain impression."

Atlas lets Owen, Armand, and the others dig deeper into the conversation with Caleb, knowing that if he did so he would likely screw something up.

The first thing that pops into Armand's mind is "It's a trap!" Perhaps his experiences with Gaston have jaded him on nobles.

Diplomacy 13 (d20+10), apparently Armand is not being too diplomatic.

Elyngael waits for Owen to respond before forming an opinion, and she has no knowledge of either Fair Meadows, or it's capital Stonebriar.

'Osul isn't won over by the fine meal, but instead tries to ascertain any information he can get from their host, as well as try to get a read on him. The perception check reveals a few things. First, 'Osul notices that Caleb's hands are the callused hands of a warrior, and secondly, he notices hanging in the corner of the room, a well worn, but well repaired cloak with a Mailed Fist membership badge pinned to it, as well as a long bow, long sword, and breastplate, all are simple and unadorned in anyway, but appear to be of high quality. The weapons and armor also show signs of much use, though they have been well taken care of. The sense motive leads 'Osul to believe that Caleb is feeling slightly uncomfortable, and that he is completely loyal to his lord, also, he appears sincerer and truthful.

Atlas decides that Caleb is a nobleman, and tries to be as obnoxious has he can without upsetting Armand, then indicates that he would like to speak to his companions in private.

Armand thinks it may be a trap, and asks why a leader from a distant land would want them to visit.

Neshi asks about Hiram Tubalcain, and why he might want the Wardens to visit

Owen tries to remember either Caleb or Lord Hiram, and he vaguely remembers Hiram being mentioned as a newly hired general shortly before he was able to escape his conscription, but has really no point of reference for either Lord Hiram or Caleb

Caleb realizes what Atlas is trying to accomplish, and he bust out laughing, with the laughter of one who just heard the punch line of a good joke. “I must apologize”, he says as he removes his robes of office, revealing normal clothing underneath, high quality to be certain, but nothing resembling the clothing of a nobleman, “like my lord, I am a warrior, and have no family tree of influence”. “I only wear these trappings, because lord Hiram asked me to, and I can think of no greater honor than to serve him”.

“For most of my adult life, I served under Colonel Hiram Tubalcain of Tiger Company in the Mailed Fist, and over the years, I have grown to love and respect the man, with the love only true brothers in arms share”. “After the recent downsizing within the Mailed Fist, my lord found himself without a job, and so he excepted a generals position within the previous lord's army, completely unaware of his evil bent”. “When he finally realized the kind of man he was working for, he rallied the military to himself, and performed a coup”. “Once the evil lord was disposed, the other generals, and high ranking officers insisted he take the lordship, a position, he never wanted, but takes very seriously”.

“As to why my lord would desire your presence, I could only speculate, but rest assured, he has noble intentions, and a valid reason”.

Armand asks about Hiram Tubalcain's title, as well as, Fair Haven's greatest threats, and needs, as well as, how far Fair Meadows is from the Tree.

Atlas is a little more congeal upon learning neither Caleb nor Hiram are nobility but he isn't so sure about the Mailed Fist, his Perception and Sense Motives checks reveal basically the same things 'Osul discovered last post.

Owen tries to remember anything about Tiger Company, and remembers hearing that they are known for their acts of valor, with a reputation of coming to the aid of those in need, He asks how the lands are fairing under Lord Hiram, before he gives a nod to his companions, let them know he is willing to meet Lord Hiram.

'Osul is far more comfortable with the current conversation, but he still is on the alert, however, other than seeing Owen give the nod of approval, he doesn't discern any new information, except that Caleb is a man of wealth, most likely earned as a soldier.

Neshi tries to determine if Caleb has any ulterior motives, and is fairly certain he is as he seems.

Elyngael seems to like the current line of questioning, as well as Caleb's Loyalty, then she let's her “Ranger's Curiosities” get the better of her as she asks about the climate and the animals found in Fair Meadows, as well as if he had a map of the lands.

Caleb ponders for a moment, than says, “Please don't think I'm acting cagey, I wish to be as forthright as I can, but at the same time I have no wish to upset my Lord by sharing things he would consider secrets of state, as such, I must think about my answers before sharing”. “Our greatest threat, at least that I'm aware of, would be the raids on our southern border by Lord Childress's men, as a result our forces are constantly on patrol”. “In spite of that, the nation is prospering under Lord Hiram, who uses the official title “Lord Protector”, A title he chose to remind himself of his duty to the people”. “He only taxes the bare minimum to keep the military in service, and as a result the people needs are met in abundance, and hunger seems to be a thing of the past”. “As one who has only lived in Fair Meadows for a few years, I am no expert, and I'm sure Owen could tell you more about the floral and Fauna than I, however, as a fellow Ranger, I can say that the land lives up to its name as it is a temperate climate, and as far as the eye can see, you see rolling hills and vast prairie lands”. “The grasses are bespectacled with every color of wild flower you can imagine, and to say that it is breath taking would be an understatement”.

Atlas holds as long as he can, he likes what he hears, but his innate distrust of people that rule is hard to shake. However, after watching his group nod one after another he finally concedes. Atlas is finally won over, and wants to know if they should leave right away, or in the morning (OOC: it's around 8:00pm)

Neshi is convinced that something isn't right, and again asks Caleb why they are being summoned, claiming the Wardens won't get involved in a war with Lord Childress.

Armand asks for a chance to speak to his friends in private, which Caleb glad obliges, then he tells the Wardens the reasons why they should go.

Elyngael is ready to go, believing it's the job of the Tree Wardens to search out new lands and boldly go were no man has gone before! (Sorry, couldn't help myself.) and then asks Caleb if there will be any dangers along the way.

'Osul wants to make sure they let their people know they are heading out, and wonders if they should use mundane or magical means to travel. He also asks if they should leave now or wait until morning.

“As it's getting late, I would suggest that we wait until morning to make our departure, however the means of transportation I leave to you, as I have no means to teleport, if that's your method of choice”, Caleb declares. He than answers Elygael, “Well, this is the Wold, one can always run into danger, but I can honestly say I arrived unmolested on my way here, so as to that, I would say the path is as safe as it can be”. Trying to relieve Neshi's misgivings, Caleb says, “I can't, for the life of me, believe that Lord Hiram would invite you to his citadel to try to gain your fighting prowess, he has a highly trained military for those purposes, but as I said before, his true intentions are unknown to me, he simply sent me here to offer an invitation to come and visit”. “I confess that my lord rarely does anything without a reason, but I am in the dark as to what that may be in this situation”.

Do you have an image of him that we could have, on coin of the realm, in a pamphlet, or the like?"

After Caleb has departed, Owen casts Scrying on Hiram Tubalcain, using the image to provide a connection if Caleb gave the Wardens one. Hiram must make a DC 19 Will save or be scried upon, but he gets either a +5 or +3 bonus because we only have secondhand knowledge of him (+3 if Caleb gives us an image of him).

A few of the Wardens are still a little unsure about the reasoning behind the trip, in spite of Caleb's multiple attempts to set their minds at ease, but they all agree that the trip is something they must do. Owen asks for something with an image of Hiram Tubalcain, and attempts scrying Hiram, but isn't able to get a lock on him

“Why certainly”, Caleb responds to Owen. Reaching into his pouch, he pulls out a gp with the image of a 40 something male with a military haircut, with a stern but pleasant look on his face. To Elyngael he answers, "It took me a bit over a week to get here, and I rode my horse, Talkon, he's actually more then a horse to me, he's my companion, as well”. To 'Osul he responds, “It is my hope and prayer that lord Gargul is always looking out for me, but if he's the one who kept me safe on the journey here, I know not, and yes this is my first time visiting the Tree of Parting”.

In the morning, the Wardens find Caleb, ready to go with his horse/companion Talkon whom he mounts with the ease of one who is well acquainted with the saddle. He greets The Wardens with a Hearty “Good Morning!”, and adds, “Shall we be off”, before he gives a verbal command to Talkon, and just like that, the Tree Wardens are off to face their next adventure.

Atlas seems to be warming up to Caleb, though he has a hard time understanding why anyone would follow another person, and asks him why he chooses to follow Hiram,

Neshi takes the front right scouting position

Armand is content letting others take the lead

'Osul determines that the weather should be lovely for the next few days

Elyngael takes the front left scouting position

Caleb answers Atlas, “Well, I guess I follow Lord Hiram, because he leads by example. I've never seen him ask anyone to do that which he wouldn't do himself, and he has a gift for delegating, seeming to always find the best in people, and putting the right people in the appropriate job”.

The trip to Fair Meadows goes without any problems, (maybe Lord Gargul is looking out for Caleb after all) and after 7 days on the trail, you cross the border into Fair Meadows. The country side consists of lovely rolling hills, and prairie lands as far as the eye can see. The grasses seem to come in several shades of green, and littering the grassy fields are a multitude of wild flowers, representing every color in the rainbow. You spot a herd of bison off in the distance, and a jack rabbit crosses your path. To say the lands are picturesque would be an understatement.

After a few hours, you can spot Stonebriar in the distance. As the capital city of Fair Meadows, Stonebriar is a moderately sized city, and from a distance you can see why it got it's name, as it built into, and on top a rocky outcropping. At the top of the outcropping, you can see the citadel, which is constructed out of a light blue stone.

Caleb is happy to answer, Most of the industry around here revolves around farming and logging. We produce a good bit of produce, but we also grow textile fibres as well, cotton, flax. The logging, well that's done under the direction of the local druid sect. See we back up to the Culver wood. we don't produce a lot of tonnage per year, but our woods are prime quality beryls and other decorative woods. the last lord was an idiot, he tried to control the whole lot and wound up almost choking the life out of all of it. The Colonel, I think he had a class in economics or something, was the darnedest thing...he threw out all the rules and regulations and just told the people to go out and make it happen...and thats what they did. our Gross domestic product has grown 30% per year since he did that. There is plenty of work here, we don't have enough folks to do it all. the last lord was as wasteful of mens lives as he was of their livelihood.

b]Owen
sees fallow fields it's true, but he sees new construction going up all over the place as well the fields won't be fallow long at this rate.

Atlas: Stonebriar was a beatiful town at one time, but the ravages of a greedy cruel lord and war have left it badly in need of some TLC. the town is named for a 12 ft stone wall that surrounds the town, legend has it that the wall was there before the town was there. it's overgrown with vines and briars, the architecture is classic Wattle and Daub construction, whitewashed and the timbers on most of the houses have been carved in various designs from the fanciful to the historic. at one point this would have been a very pleasant and beautiful place, but many of the buildings are in disrepair, and even the occupied ones show signs of haveing been repaired hastily and not whitewashed to match. on the hill is the keep, madeof cut stone with a good wall. other buldings, the church, the granaries are made of stone. there is new construction going on all over the place tough, so it may not be long until the place is pleasant again.

Armand: stonebriar seems to have between 7 to 12 thousand people in it. looks like agriculture is the main staple. apparently, there are farming communities surrounding stonebriar, they bring their goods here to sell.

‘Osul: just enjoys the ride.

Elyngael the road system here consists of dirt tracks for the most part, as you get closer to Stonebriar you see crews putting in a macadam road, following the road you just came down.

Yurr'Neshi likes this place as well.

Caleb takes you to the Keep, he shakes everybody's hand and takes his leave, shortly after turning all of you over to a steward who shows you to your rooms and offers to have baths drawn up and dinner sent up if needed.

After clean up and a good meal, of potatoes au gratin, Roast Beef, beets and fresh bread, with an adequate but not excessive time to relax afterwards, The Steward informs you that Colonel Tubalcain will see you all now.

you are escorted to the lord's office, it looks to have once been opulently apportioned, but no longer the room is fairly spartan, a board holds a bunch of medals for various deeds of valour, there are also mementoes to places travelled and battles fought. a suite of well cared for but well-used armour and weapons graces one wall.

Hiram himself is rather striking, his features are sharp, his ears a bit too big, his sandy brown hair is starting to go to gray, his eyebrows are black, but his eyes. he has eyes so blue as to be almost white. He does not smile, but you feel welcomed and at ease by him. He stands as you enter and put the sheaf of papers down he was reading. you notice he has rather small delicate hands.

Welcome! I trust you aren't too worn out from your journey? I would have liked to give you a day or so of rest, but I've a pressing issue I need your help with.

ooc: Sorry ya'll, work kept me late last night.

The Colonel nods, to business then, My men, and I do mean all my men, are all out on the southern border interdicting attempted raids by Lord Childress into our lower farming communites. The shires sole constable is a holdover from the last Lord, and while I don't think he is complicit in the current troubles, he is without a doubt the stupidest, laziest, and most drunken individual I have ever had the displeasure of meeting, I quite paying him 3 months ago, but apparently he's getting enough graft from somewhere or he's so slovenly the hasn't noticed the deficit...I really don't think he has the ambition to work extortion.

All this is leading up to the fact that we seem to have a cult operating in Fair Meadows. blood sacrifices and all the lot. .I was told that your group specialized in solving problems like this, and besides, there was someone here that wanted to meet you beside me. The secretary I hired away from the library is awful good, but she obsesses about the Tree Wardens way too much.

Owen old memories resurface, her feel, her smell, a million little things, they all lock into place, the hair on your arms rises, and tears come to your eyes. this was a different life, but a life you loved more than you could let on, even to yourself. her words come in a rush, through the tears and the kisses(it's a rush of words, long and drawn out, I'm going to sum up). the old lord withdrew funding for the library and she had to move most of the books to the house and the houses of friends. he tired to say you deserted, but nobody believed him or blamed you, he was trash. I had no work since the library closed down, so i started a book exchange and did some Scrivner work, when Hiram took over he put me to work as his secretary, that's where i got word of you and the Wardens, Oh Gods! Simon! Simon has grown so much! he is so smart, and he wont let anyone talk about his father. he's at home in bed, when you get home he'll be so excited! she goes on with many different tales, family, friends. it looks as though she's going to give you all the news of the region.

Atlas: if you had to describe the Colonels look it would be the look of a Father whos daughter just found her true love.

Armand: Tubalcain looks from the embracing couple to you, for the whole shire, he had some press ganged deputies, but there is very little crime here, and I let them go, they were as useless a he is. As soon as my secretary disentangles herself from your man, she has a docket on the attacks.

[b] ‘Osul:
listens and parses the information given.

Elyngael cautiously watches the woman, ready to give aid should she be attack...oh...maybe she needs help...Owen seems...rather excited...

Yurr'Neshi asks a few pertinent questions. Hiram, shrugs...if I knew where they were I could detach a squad to go take care of them, but I cant spare a squad for a protracted search. as to numbers...we know it's more than one and less the 50, that's about the gist of it...like I said, Mrs. Marcellus has a docket.

At the Colonel's insistence, she disengages from Owen with a smile that lights up the room like the sun. Still grinning like a fool and showing great dexterity she opens and pages through a file all the while holding on to Owens' hand.

There have been 4 attacks in the last 2 months. the first was some slaughtered animals in makeshift altar, they started 2 months ago. the temple of Gargul has been vandalized a soldier on leave thought he saw something and we've had some folk go missing under suspicious circumstances. she seems to get into the briefing and lets go of Owens hand to start passing out papers with pertinent info on them. she has beautiful handwriting.

sacrifices seem to be dedicated to Gargul, graffiti at church is gargul related, the Soldier who saw something lost consciousness as he went to investigate. Head priest at the church has reported some of his congregation missing.

After the party has digested the admittedly scanty clues Hiram and Mrs Marcellus answer any questions they party might have and then The Colonel asks. do you think you can handle it?

Owen is over come with joy with the reuniting with his wife.

Atlas seems pleased that Owen is reunited with his wife, and watches for signs of displeasure from Hiram.

Neshi asks some questions about the cult.

“Oh Owen, I've missed you so”, Isabel says with tears of joy running down her cheeks, “So much has changed, the previous lord defunded the library, and we were forced to close it. I was able to secure your books and such, but times were tough before the coup, however, the Colonel hired me as his secretary, which has more than provided for me and the boy, and I believe the Colonel will reopen the library after these difficulties are over”. “Our son, by the way. is healthy and growing like a weed, he'll be so happy to see you”, She continues.

“Miss Marcellus”, Hiram interrupts, “When you're done reuniting with your husband, would you mind relating the current events to the Tree Wardens” “I'm sorry lord”, Isabel reacts, “I will share what we know now”. “There have been 4 attacks in the last 2 months”, she begins, “They seem to be some twisted attempt to please Lord Gargul, and although none of the attacks have happened in Stonebriar, we believe the perpetrators, have detailed knowledge of the guards movements”, she continues. “The other night the temple of Gargul was vandalized, the vandals left graffiti and threatening letters that claim they are preaching heresy. A city guard thought he saw something, but was knocked unconscious before he could identify anyone”.

“Thank you Miss Marcellus”, Hiram says with a nod of approval. Then to the wardens he says, “As I've already shared, the shire constable is worse than useless, and I would be in your debt if you could smoke out these evil doers, before my people begin to panic, and/or embrace these corrupt teachings”. “Please feel free to use the citadel as a base of operations during your investigations, I give you complete authority to preform your investigating as you seem fit, though I suggest talking to the priests at the temple of Gargul in the morning, as they may be able to give you some clues as to where to begin.

'Osul believes that the light of day will clarify things

Armand recalls a cult from the past, known as the Death Dragons, that believed in blood sacrifices to Gargul, but to the best of his knowledge, no Woldian god has requested blood sacrifices. He also would like to question the constable, believing that his incompetence may be a cover for compliance.

Atlas asks how well the guard was questioned, believing there may be a chance he is involved with the cult.

Owen agrees talking to the guard my be fruitful, and wonders if any old friends may be helpful.

Elyngael also wishes to examine the alters, as well as question the ex-constable, and is chomping at the bit to get started.

Neshi wants to know Hiram's wishes on dealing with the evil doers

“Feel free to question the ex-constable, I have a hard time believing that a drunkard like him could be involved in something like this, but I suppose you may know more about such things than I do, however, you don't need to waste your time talking to the guard, as he was questioned while under a zone of truth spell”, Hiram explains. “If you would like to examine the blood alters, you will have to leave Stonebriar, as they weren't built in the city, but since the most recent activity seems to be at the temple of Gargul here in Stonebriar, you may wish to start there, but again, I bow to your experience in such things, I am a soldier, and recently a head of state, not a detective, and to answer your question Neshi, ultimately I would love to see these individuals receive a fair trial, and be punished accordingly, but if they resist, feel free to do what needs to be done".

“My friends, the hour is late, and once again I thank you for coming, Miss Marcellus will show the majority of you to your rooms, however, I believe she will be taking Owen home with her”, he says with a smile.

Armand looks lost in thought for a moment. "You know I dimly seem to recall a cult called the Death Dragons, that dealt with blood sacrafices and tried to associate themselves with Gargul. That may be something to research. See if there's any sort of history of that in this region or such."

'Osul is weary after the travel, and needs to also give consideration to what spells might even be useful in this situation.

Before heading to bed Atlas decides to go out and do some investigating in the way he knows best. He leaves the keep and wanders through the town until he finds a tavern that caters to the less well off folks of Stonebriar. Upon entering he finds a place to sit and does what he does best, flashes his smile and makes friends over drinks. He eaves drops when he can, talks to the bar keep, and offers drinks to people willing to talk with him. He plays the part of a newcomer to Stonebriar, just looking for work. He has spent plenty of time in his life with peasants and even those that skirt the law to make their living, so it feels like home to him once he settles in. His primary goal is to see if he can learn anything about the sacrifices, with his secondary goal being to learn about the mood of the town and how they feel about this new leader of theirs.

Once he's enjoyed the evening and learned everything that he can he heads back to the keep to settle in for a night of rest.

Armand is off to bed, but before he takes his leave of his companions, he echo's Hiram's suggestion of checking the temple first, and considers bringing the ex-constable along. He also ponders the history of the Death Dragons, but can't seem to gain any insight.
OCC... the Death Dragons have apparently been a threat in the past in some of the other games, however, as a relative newcomer to the Wold, I have no personal knowledge of them. Sorry I couldn't give any insight to your knowledge history check.

'Osul is tired, but before he hits the sack, he contemplates what spells to prepare in the morning.
In the morning, he soars over Stonebriar, taking in a birds eye view of the city, it surrounding hamlets, and country side. The view is picturesque, besides the natural beauty, he also sees the labor of reconstruction, as well as some new construction going on down below.

Atlas decides to hit the town, before hitting the rack, he searches for a pub for the less well off, and stumbles upon a slightly run down, yet surprisingly clean pub with a faded sign out front sporting a comical image of an obviously intoxicated brass dragon holding a tankard of ale, and the name The Drunken Dragon. He gleans a few things from the, for the most part, friendly patrons. There seems to be much talk about the vandalism at the temple, and no small amount of ridicule directed to the ex-constable, who you discover is sitting alone at the end of the bar, obviously to drunk to care. It is also very obvious that Hiram's description of the man was both accurate, and generous, and like Hiram, you have a hard time believing that such a wasted life could be behind the attacks.
The people seem to be in good spirits, and you over hear on say to another, “I told you Lord Hiram had things under control, why just this afternoon, I saw Owen Marcellus returning, along with his friends, what do they call themselves again, oh yeah, the Tree Wardens, you know if he's bringing in the likes of them, things will be sorted out soon”. You get the general idea that the Lord Protector is well respected by the people.
Atlas then heads back to the citadel to sleep.

Owen is overjoyed to be entering his own home and is brought to tears, when Simon sees him and runs to him yelling DADDY! Simon is the spitting image of his father, and Owen can't help but feel a sense of pride, as he embraces his son.

Elyngael heads to bed.

Atlas wakes up ready for the day! He goes about his routine, doing his forms and mentally preparing for the day to come. He missed this. Sitting at the Tree and traveling just don't compare to a day when you know something interesting is going to happen.

Once he's ready he leaves his room looking for breakfast, eager to get to the temple to start asking questions. Upon bumping into his friends he gives them a run down of what he learned last night.

Armand will then go to the temple. He wants to speak to the priest there and see if the writing/graffiti is still there so he can examine it.

OOC how long ago were the marks made? Do we know how often the sacrifices are being made? 1/week, same day, or random? Is it unusual for Gargul to have a temple in a city, I would think the god of death would not be so prevalent. Are there other temples in the city? In what were the marks made, paint, blood, etc?

Atlas is anxious to get started, but takes the time to share what he gleaned from the night before over breakfast.

Armand listens intently to Atlas's assessment over breakfast, then asks Atlas to retrieve the ex-constable and bring him to the temple

Elyngael asks Hiram if they need badges or something similar to preform their duties, then tags along with Atlas in retrieving the ex-constable.

Owen enjoys a long overdue night with his family.

“You must have read my mind Elyngael”, Hiram answers, and he hands each of the wardens a 3x5 card with his personal seal stamped on it, “these will let anyone who asks know that you are working under my authority”.

Even though he thinks it's a waste of time, Atlas, along with Elygael and Khan, goes to retrieve the ex-constable. A knock on the door brings a man that obviously was just forced to get out of bed. When you show him Hiram's seal, he asks if he could at least get dressed before being forced to talk to the priests. A quick scan of the domicile, shows the general disarray of a drunkard, empty wine bottles scattered throughout, ECT... He seems to have a hard time getting dressed, and the stench of booze is strong on him, It appears as though he is still drunk from the night before. When he is finally dressed, he somewhat unwillingly leads the way to the temple, where they meet up with the rest of the wardens.

As you arrive at the temple, you see that it is a stone building with a large metal “Eye of Gargul” hung prominently above the door, where a relatively young priest is chatting with and farewelling parishioners as they exit the temple.

OCC.. As the god of both life and death, there are those who worship Gargul as the giver of life, so temples to him wouldn't be that uncommon across the Wold. There are temples or at least shrines to all the Woldian gods scattered throughout the city. There have been 4 attacks in the last 2 months, which don't seem to have any particular schedule, and the vandalism of the temple happened about a week ago.

When Atlas and company arrive, he introduces the wardens to him and asks his thoughts on the cult going ons.

Owen, after a good nights sleep, or whatever him and his wife did, is in an uncharacteristic good mood, and feels like he can take on the world.

Elyngael and Khan attempt to search the perimeter of the temple to find any clues of strange comings and goings, but because of the vast number of footprints and scents, and an uncertainty of what to be looking for, nothing jumps out at them.

The party enters the Temple, and Chia is about to answer your questions, when he gives out a scream, and places his hand on his third eye, and his heart (a simple prayer to Gargul), and then he falls to his knees. At the same time, you hear a retching sound coming from the ex-constable, and then he faints.
Directly above the altar is the body of the senior priest, with a pool of blood gathering on the alter below. You hear a load noise coming from upstairs, which sounds like the thumping of footsteps, something getting knocked over, and breaking glass. Then you hear 4 thumping sounds, just outside the temple, which sounds like something landing after a fall.

Wahoo the spell worked.

Armand quickly turns and yells at the young priest as he rushes outside, "Get him down from there!"

OOC I'm going to assume a run action to get out of the temple and back outside.

OOC sorry, arrow damage from last time is: normal (1d8+4=12) and fire (1d6=2).

Khan (I was using level 5 stats, I forgot we leveled up since I last printed it off)
Lv 6 animal companion - AC 20/15/15 CMD 23 HP: 62/62
Bite +8, 1d8+3
Claw +8 1d6+3

Khan makes his save (d20+8=20)
Khan is not letting this guy get away, he closes on him again and bites, while taking a huge scent just in case they do get away.
To hit (d20+8=20) if he hits, damage (d8+3=9)

If these guys are human Elyngael gets a +4 on them as favored enemy. Assuming they are at this point, if not -4 on to hit and normal damage.
Seeing her arrow did not have much effect, she switches to her adamantine arrows, and rapid fires on the offending human, in the back of the line near Khan.
Arrow 1, to hit (d20+17=36) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 11) fire damage (d6=1)
Arrow 2 to hit (d20+12=27) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 10) fire damage (d6=1)
Arrow 3, rapid shot to hit (d20+17=32) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 12) fire damage (d6=3)

Khan should have an AOO if the bloodwitch he's on takes more that a 5 foot step right? Should he have gotten an AOO last round too?

Neshi casts fireball against the witches. Only the lead witch saves for half

Atlas stands confused (OCC... the confusion spell lasts for 1 round per level, so the spell is in effect for a total of 9 rounds. The effect is different each round depending on a dice roll. Sorry if there was any confusion)

Armand runs outside and sees his friends and the Blood Witches

Elyngael switches to adamantine arrows which seem to penetrate as they normally do. The result is devastating, as she completely obliterates the poor guy. Khan's bite has the same effect as last round, obviously hitting, but just not able to break the surface.
(OOC... because they used the withdraw action, the witches didn't trigger AoO, and they are human.)

Owen takes to the sky, and notices the blood witches.

The lead witch drinks a potion, and a dense fog appears between the party and witches the witches continue to run. This round the confusion spell on Atlas doesn't seem to have any effect, and he can function normally.

Not totally being able to see what is going on past the fog, Neshi cast another area spell this time centering it on the edge of the fog and the building Z 17 hoping to catch any trying to use the fog for cover.

ice storm - 18 points damage no save, spell resistance 28, -4 perception, difficult terrain

Atlas comes to his senses, looks around, and runs forward, into the mist. He pushes straight ahead, not caring if he runs into anything. Atlas bursts through the mist into the clearing and is startled to find the witches right next to him. He immediately stops and prepares to attack them.

Sorry Atlas, this does not allow a save each round.

Confusion
School enchantment (compulsion) [mind-affecting]; Level bard 3, bloodrager 4, sorcerer/wizard 4, witch 4; Domain madness 4, trickery 4; Subdomain entropy 5, lust 4, whimsy 4

CASTING
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M/DF (three nutshells)

EFFECT
Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets all creatures in a 15-ft.-radius burst
Duration 1 round/level
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes

DESCRIPTION

This spell causes confusion in the targets, making them unable to determine their actions. Roll on the following table at the start of each subject’s turn each round to see what it does in that round.
Table: Confusion Effects d% Behavior
01-25 Acts normally
26-50 Does nothing but babble incoherently
51-75 Deals 1d8 points of damage + Str modifier to self with item in hand
76-100 Attacks nearest creature (for this purpose, a familiar counts as part of the subject’s self)

A confused character who can’t carry out the indicated action does nothing but babble incoherently. Attackers are not at any special advantage when attacking a confused character. Any confused character who is attacked automatically attacks its attackers on its next turn, as long as it is still confused when its turn comes. Note that a confused character will not make attacks of opportunity against any creature that it is not already devoted to attacking (either because of its most recent action or because it has just been attacked).

Armand moves forward 30 feet and casts Dispel Magic at the obscuring mist. Roll of d20+caster level = 10, well that's not going to do diddly. Spending a hero point for the reroll. 24. Verses the DC of 11+the caster level of the person that cast it.

Assuming the fog mist is gone from Armand's spell. Elyngael targets the rear bloodwitch further away from Atlas. 1 range incriment now so -2 but the +4 for favored enemy still brings attacks even, including rapid shot.
She continues using her adamantine arrows, and rapid fires on her target.
Arrow 1, to hit (d20+15=34) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 14) fire damage (d6=5)
Arrow 2 to hit (d20+12(actually that should be a 10 so=22) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 14) fire damage (d6=1)
Arrow 3, rapid shot to hit (d20+15=32) damage (1d8+8 (human bonus) = 13) fire damage (d6=1)

Owen nods in response to Armand, then turns as he sees what Neshi is doing. "Neshi! There could be bystanders! Take it easy!"

Then he flies higher and closer to cast Shadow Evocation, creating an illusionary Wall of Ice that blocks off the entire street and rises thirty feet high (AE11-16). If the blood witches interact with the wall, they must make a DC 21 Will save or interact with the wall as if it were real.

Neshi throws out a spell at random, but misses due to the fog (OCC... thanks for not meta-gaming, dang good role playing)

Atlas makes a dash through the fog, and is surprised to arrive next to an enemy. Then the confusion spell kicks in again, and he starts babbling incoherently again, and is unable to move forward.

Armand dispels the Obscuring Mist and asks Owen if his elevated position would allow him to stop the witches somehow.

Elyngael does what she does best, and turns another witch into a pin cushion, dropping him dead.

'Osul drops lightning on the witches frying #1 and #2 crispy, however #3 made his save and keeps running.

Owen scolds Neshi for his shot in the dark for fear of hitting innocent bystanders. Then creates an illusionary wall of ice. OCC... I randomly placed the Ice wall on the map since you didn't say where it was, or draw it in, I hope that is close to where you want it, if not feel free to move it and #3 if needed.

#3 tries to round the corner, but runs headlong into Owen's wall, as he failed his save. then you see him drink a potion, and suddenly he disappears. There is a moderate crowd of towns people coming and going, however they are obviously terrified at the moment. (lucky no innocent people got hurt in the fight)

'Osul can't quite figure out what kind of potion the witch may have consumed, but he does hear some mumbling just north of where he saw the witch disappear. (OOC... thanks for the feed back, it really helps)

Atlas mumbles incoherently, as a result of the confusion spell

Armand readies a spell just in case the witch reappears, and while looking for escape routes, he hears the same mumbling that 'Osul did.

Neshi rightly surmises that the potion was a potion of invisibility, and quickly spins a web blocking any escape via mundane means. (OOC..you wrote 10ft in front, so I assumed you meant in front of you, if I'm mistaken, feel free to move the web marker)

Elyngael easily finds a blood trail, and also hears the mumbling, and Khan is able to sniff out the trail with no problem. (I allowed Khan through before Neshi's web spell was cast, but he is only moving at half speed due to tracking.)OOC.. the scent ability offers no bonuses, just another means of perception and tracking.

Owen casts see invisibility on himself, and instantly sees the witch, 20ft north of his previous location. and prepares to give chase.

Atlas is free to act normally this round. 'Osul, Armand, and Elyngael each are allowed a spell check DC 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {he casts shadow walk} Owen watches, the visible only to him, witch step into the shadow from the building, only to disappear again.

DM Rob - "He's gone"
Monday October 22nd, 2018 7:44:18 AM

The party desperately tries to get hold of the witch and make last ditch efforts to do so.

Osul throws a web spell, Neshi throws a sunstick, Armand brings down some Holy Wrath. Elyngael and Khan try to track the witch by scent but the trail only leads to where he was.

But it is all too late. Armand identified the spell correctly as being a Shadow Walk spell. The witch could be anywhere now. Owen shakes his head, obviously unhappy with the result. He does have an idea and asks Armand about it. It may be possible to speak with the dead here.

The battle is done.

There are a few people now in the street starting to approach, curious to see what has transpired. Apparently deaths and fights in the street are uncommon here.

Inside the church can be heard the faint sound of sobbing.

The party decide it may be best to remove the corpses from the street and remove any spectacle.

Osul scoops up one of them, Atlas grabs another, and Elyngael the third.

Once inside the temple Neshi sets to examining the bodies. Atlas helps poke about as well. Between them they recover some items, which anyone with a detect magic spell is able to quickly identify:
3 x +1 Quarterstaves, 2 x Bracers of Armor +1, 3 x Cloaks of Resistance +2, 6 x Potions of Cure Moderate Wounds, 3 x Rings of Protection +1

Armand is more focused on the sobbing. He's worried that a second attempt may have been made on the senior priest. Fortunately thata is not the case. It's Chia that is sobbing. He's kneeling by the still alive body of the senior priest - Renul. Chia is visibly upset and is holding onto Renul's hand. Renul lies on the ground with the rope still wrapped around his neck, albeit very very loosely. Chia has managed to stop it from strangling the poor man but hasn't been able to remove it completly. Renul still looks quite unwell but at least is conscious. "I'll be ok, Chia. It's ok. It is not my time to visit the Lord" he says as he grips Chia's hand.

Khan angrily circles the church while Elyngael stands by the entrance of the church to stop others from entering.

Owen circles from the air but can't see any signs of trouble. There are still people looking towards the church but nothing sinister. They are acting more curious than threatening.

While someone unties the priest, Armand goes over to the constable and wakes him up. "Look here you drunken sot. The Lord Gargul has restored the head priest to this temple. He now looks down on you." Armand points to the alter, which still has the blood of the priest on it. "It is your choice how the judgement of Lord Gargul see's you. Remain a drunkard and when you are claimed know that your life will weigh little in judgement toward reward. Or turn your life around now and be someone." He points to the three dead persons because technically we don't know they are blood witches. "They attempted to subsume the rights of Gargul. You once were a constable of this city. Do you want to be what a Constable Should Be? Do you recognize any of them? Do you know where they live or places they frequent? Do you know any of the people they associate with?"

Armand will cast Discern Lies and await how the Constable answers. (lasts for 1/round a level, concentration required, allows caster to know when a lie is spoken)

At Armand's call Atlas rushes over and cuts the rope off the priest. "We need a way to find them and then we need to understand why they are doing what they are. I'm sure they'll resist and/or give vague unhelpful answers like those in the past, but I still think it is worth a shot."

Elyngael leaves Khan outside on patrol and enters the temple. She says, "Weren't you all going in here originally to look at some letters or something. I want to go look where those guys jumped out the window. Maybe there's something in that room."

Elyngael will give the room a good going over. Perception (d20+17=26)

Armand is naturally relieved to see that the efforts to save the head priest were successful. He can cast a speak with dead spell but asks the opinion of the party - what 3 questions could be asked?

Neshi has a few suggestions.

Armand then turns his attention to the constable urging him to see the error of his ways. The constable nods, and smacks his lips, likely missing having a drink for a while. He looks at the bodies through blood-shot eyes and clears his throat "Yeah, that one. That's, uh. That's, uh. What's his name? It sounds a bit like Liam, but it's not, you know what I mean? Does that help at all?" He looks to Armand with wide open eyes, like a dog seeing if the master is happy.

"His name is Jahnud" Chia scowls "And that one is Ton, and that one Tuldil. Those two are brothers. They're all parishioners here. They come to temple every day. They were at today's service too, less than an hour ago. Everything seemed fine"

Sense Motive DC20: Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the impression that Chia is biting his tongue so as not to call the constable any name that a good priest would regret saying}

Armand doesn't detect any lies from the constable, only the smell of booze. He seems to be trying to help.

Atlas looks over the loot and is quite impressed. Lots there to go around.

Osul tends to the injured, which at this point is the senior priest. He still doesn't look very good.

Elyngael and Owen set to looking through what looks to be the senior priests private quarters. The room is a mess. A chair on its side, papers scattered around the desk, and books laying about an empty bookcase. Someone has given the room a thorough going over. Owen doesn't see much of use however Elyngael spots a few pages of parchment that look out of place. They are further away from the desk and closer to the window.

The first few pages look like the Senior Priest's personal notes. It is clear that he has strong suspicions of a cult operating in the town but has no proof of it.
There are also letters from two parishioners asking for his help to find family members who have gone missing without a trace. Faithe's husband, and Rosa's son. The letters ask the priest to personally pray to Gargul for advice, and for help in finding them. Are they at peace? Has the Lord taken them home?
Finally, what looks like a threat: "Leave town now and take your lies with you else you will meet Lord Gargul sooner than you planned"

Sense Motive 30 (d20+13).

"Hmm. I guess Atlas was right, you are useless." Armand says to the Constable. "You can go, the grownups have work to do." He gives Atlas the nod and indicates that Atlas should give the bum a rush.

Armand goes over to the senior priest and examines him. Heal 20 (d20+11). He wonders why the priest still seems so weak. Armand decides to channel to heal everyone. Everyone heals 16.

He speaks to Chia and the senior priest. "Is there anything else you can tell us?"

Armand turns to the group. "Questions for the dead? 1-Who is your leader? 2-Where is the secret temple to Gargul? 3-How many are in your secret temple? Not sure about wording on some of that, they may indicate the temple here. Maybe we should ask what they are?"

Atlas looks over at the constable, makes eye contact, and nods his head towards the door to indicate that he should go, now. "I'm going to check in on you later this week. I expect that you will have found a way to get yourself sober and to stay sober. You can be a good man if you get back on the right path. Get help or you won't like my visit."

Turning back to the group, Atlas looks at Chia. "Could you get someone to guide us to their homes? We have family to give our condolences to, as well as some questions to ask."

Atlas then ponders the questions. "That sounds good Armand, but I might change the secret temple to Where is your secret temple? I don't know that we can for certain say that it is a temple to Gargul, even if it is pointing to that way. Also, by indicating 'your' we are not allowing them just pick any secret temple, it has to be the one they consider to be theirs."
