5: How the Mighty Return

DM Robert - Have the hobgoblins been repulsed from the other gates?
Tuesday October 23rd, 2018 8:42:06 PM

Dirk feels the sting from the fireball.

Bartomus returns to normal but seems to have enjoyed his first foray into another form.

Dorbin looks around, Emily emerges from the bush.

Zanderallen tries to clam people and then lets the power of Domi heal those nearby.

Sid gets down from Stock's arms and goes over to his broken bow. Which as a reminder not being magical is easily repaired by the right magic.

Stohp calls for some healing of her prisoners.

Micah heals the prisoners. No you are no longer in rounds.

Stock?

Slythyl comments, "Indeed I believe the fight is won. reports that there were a great many at the east gate but mostly seemed to be fodder. Well except for 2 leader types. But the magic of the forest and weather is strong and they were destroyed. What took me so long was trying to round up stragglers."

Elderberry reports to Slythyl. "There was a weak attempt at the north gate, but it was mostly some archers trying to pull us off the line. We managed to close with them and killed them all. We have recovered several good weapons and armor from them." He looks around. "It seems there are more weapons and armor to claim here as well. The people will be well provisioned with metal weapons for awhile."

On the south side there are:
(H)12: studded leather armor, shield, longswords.
(Ha)6: mwk chain shirt, mwk light wooden shield, flail, mwk longbow with 20 arrows, mwk longsword,
(Hb)1: +1 hide armor, longbow with 20 arrows, mwk short swords (2)
(Hc)3: +1 chainmail, +1 bastard sword, shortbow with 20 arrows, spear, military saddle, scale mail barding,
(Hd)1:mwk javelins (3), bracers AC +1, ring of protection +1, amulet of mighty fists,

1459 gp

The lizard folk are currently scavenging the bodies of the slain hobgoblins around you. They are also preparing to butcher the first Yak.

Far to the south you see the band of 6 lizard folk launch into the hobgoblins trying to escape. The fight is short and somewhat brutal. They do not kill the yaks, but instead capture them.

Slythyl looks around. He nods to you all. "There is much to do. We must recover and prepare. It seems we will again be feasting this night."

"Feasting will be good, but I got to ask you, is there any way we can get a sense if there are more of those things coming this way?" Bartomus pointed at the fleeing hobgoblins. Bartomus looked after the brutal assault on the riders. "Some type of warning further out maybe?"

"Anybody got any healing? I'm a little sore still. That fireball really nailed me."

He finds a bare patch of beard where too much fire apparently hit him and just grunts. He then spends a few minutes searching and finds a wide, flat gray stone with what appears to be a small insect skeleton in the side of it. He takes a long look at it and puts it in his belt pouch.

"Mr. Slythyl sir, I do hope we have proven our trustworthiness in this fight. I can't promise that the Float will always be there for you like we were but everybody needs friends in a world like this."

Dorbin (JeffO) [AC:13/13/10 HP:48/48 CMD:15]
Wednesday October 24th, 2018 11:32:30 AM

Dorbin speaks quietly to the eagles, apparently thanking them. Then they disappear in a flash. He lets the lizards roll the bodies and instead pulls out his notebook, taking notes and occasionally looking over at the hobgoblins and the dead lizardman.

"South gate was a fairly determined attack by what appears to be some of their more elite forces. They made an attempt at the hedge with alchemist fire but with our magic users splitting and confusing their forces we drove them back. Those few your men are chasing are all that are left. Any news of the west gate? I hope Skagauh beat back whatever force was there before his treachery but I would like to confirm that." Zanderallen looks around at the bodies and equipment being sorted and makes a decision, hoping the rest of the Shields stand by it. "Slythyl we will be glad to feast with you tonight. Let us know if there is anything we can do to help. And please consider the weapons of the fallen here a gift to you, a sign of further goodwill and future friendship between our peoples. We will take their gold and perhaps some of their items of power that are useful to us, but all their weapons and armor are yours to take."

Seeing that the situation appears to be stable, Micah approaches Sid. Knowing that sometimes there are others types of wounds that require healing, he gently reaches out his hand to touch the sundered bow. "I have magic that can repair the damage, but it takes time." Extending his other arm for assistance, he settles himself on the ground and begins a slow, careful chanting.

After coming out of his trance, the cracks are visibly beginning to repair, but in need of further attention. Still, Micah hopes that the repair is sufficient to give Sid hope that all will be returned to normal. "This can be repaired, but perhaps the time required would better be spent after we are certain the village has no immediate need for us," he says as he hands the bow back to Sid. "Carefully collect and store the pieces of the bow until later." He stands and stretches out his back. With a deep breath he continues gently, "This will be done, but just not now."

Sid sniffs a bit and sighs, softly saying, "Thank you Micah." He stores Lhysandri in his efficient quiver and slaps himself a bit. "Sorry, eh eh." Sid clears his throat a moment. "You're right, there are things to accomplish." He goes over to the Hd and takes the bracers. "I killed this one and take these as my prize." Sid also loks for a nicknack or trinket that the monk might have had as well. "You took from me and I have taken from you... let's call it even."

Sid then goes and finds the best way he could help everyone else.

Stohp strongly resists the urge to hit Zander across the back of the head. He just offered the lizardfolk the gear that, by right of their homes being the ones under attack, they likely already considered their own. She hopes this faux pas doesn't sour the growing bond between the two groups.

Seeing Sid's actions she folds her arms and silently glares at him. He could have at least phrased it as a request. She doesn't want to yell at him in public though.

DM Robert - day 10 ends
Wednesday October 24th, 2018 8:42:05 PM

Bartomus wonders if some sort of early warning system should be set up.
Elderberry responds, "Our scouts did give us some warning."
Slythyl responds, "There are many things I can now do that will aid us in the coming times. I dared not make use of my full druidic powers before, for fear of the sentience of the woods sensing them and finding the people."

Anyone, Knowledge Nature or Spellcraft 18 Highlight to display spoiler: { If you recall Slythyl awakend a tree, when he left you. This is permanent, that tree is awake and wandering the forest. Albet ready to do Slythyl's bidding. Also he cast Liveoak, which is a cool spell look it up.}

Stock asks for some healing and offers some words of friendship.
Slythyl smiles a toothy grin. "I agree everyone needs help now and then. I hope we can be good friends."

Dorbin starts writing in his journal.

Zanderallen wonders about the other gates, offers up some loot, while staking a claim for some loot.
Elderberry states, "The other gates are secure. The hobgoblins have all been dealt with. No need to fear them anymore."
Cactusflower calls out and tells the gathers, to put the gold near you.

Micah does a little repairing on the bow.

Sid thanks Micah and takes the Bracers of AC. As a reminder, Bracers of Armor do not Stack with other armor.

Stohp glares at Zanderallen and Sid.

Dirk looks around but really does not find anything interesting.

Everything is gathered and taken inside. There are many graves dug to fertilized the trees. But there is no ceremony over the hobgoblins. Skaguah's body is taken away by the council members. They return a few hours later, not saying what was done to the body.

The feast that night is a welcome change. Yak stakes are surprisingly tasty. It appears the hobgoblins also had some food supplies for your meal is augmented by rounds of cheese, some crusty bread, and some dried fruits. During the meal there is much laughter and joy. It seems the Lizard Folk took no serious injuries during the battle. There are a few bandages around arms and heads.

Slythyl and the council asks you to sit with them. "We talked this afternoon. We have decided that perhaps having a trade treaty with the Float is a good idea. We may also be interested in some sort of mutual assistance treaty. Long ago, in my youth, I remembered finding some old ruins up near the fork in the river. I believe that is where we shall build our new city. But we will need much in the way of supplies, cut stone, metal tools, and perhaps some skilled in the crafts of building things." He looks to you for a response.

Sense Motive 20 Highlight to display spoiler: {He's probably looking for hints on how much it would cost. And perhaps how much the Float needs lumber. }

Elderberry says. "We have much in the way of weapons and good bows. But I would still like to see our small force better equipped. You Silver Shields held off quite a bit by yourselves, and Slythyl indicates that your equipment is far superior to that which we took from the Hobgoblins. We will probably need to trade much to outfit 20 or so good rangers and soldiers."

Sense Motive 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {He's definitely looking for hints on how much it would cost.}

Slythyl continues. "Tomorrow I intend to visit several places where years ago there were some communites of Lizard Folk." Spellcraft 16 Highlight to display spoiler: {Most likely using Transport Via Plants}
"Once we move I'd like for this Grove to return to it's sacred status. I would appreciate it if you would not tell anyone of it's existence." He turns to Bartomus. "You of course are welcome to this grove whenever you wish. And you said there were other druids on your Float. I may be interested in meeting them in the future."

As a reminder you know they have gold, the question might be how much do they have. Setting up lumbering would definitely help the Float as well. The Float has been resource poor for some time. Also you know they have a great deal of artwork that could bring in some money as well.

Bartomus enjoyed the feast. He finally felt at ease with the lizard folk as they had endured battle and betrayal and overcame both. The food was good, the company better. When Slythyl brought up the reestablishment of a new city for his people, Bartomus listened and looked about at the other Shields.

"Lumber for sure could be used in the float," he said looking at the others. He sipped the drink that he had been offered, some type of fruit drink with a slight kick to it. He turned to Micah and Zander, "they need trade representatives, someone that they can trust. You have to see that right? The Druids, they might be the ones to help in all of this. Maybe we could ask that there be a visit by the Druids? But, they would need to hide the gold, right?"

"Yeah, the Druids could help. Do you think they would be impartial enough, Bart? I'm sure they'd just be thrilled to know there is a grove nearby. That alone should get their interest. In general though, I think you have plenty to trade to help make the arrangements you need. Sid here knows how hard it is to get good lumber on the Float. I would actually recommend you to think about how best to go about controlling that lumber trade as much as you can. You'll need some relationships with turtle boat captains to move the lumber...maybe figure a way to float it to the Float...Anyway I know it may seem like an expensive ordeal to you but I think you actually have much more to gain from the whole relationship."

"The druids could certainly be used as a contact, I'm sure they are eager to explore the forest's sacred places, having been unable to enter it for so long. As to impartial representatives I don't think that is going to happen, we can certainly try our best to keep a handle on the excesses of the council. That is why I have been trying to arm the lizardfolk with the knowledge they will need to sit at the trade table with merchants from the float." Stohp gets the jist of the questions and cuts right to the point (sense motive 30). "The real trouble is I'm not sure if our people use the same currency. It's hard to name a price if we don't agree on what to use as payment." She pulls out coins of various types, bronze, silver, gold. She holds up the gold one. "This is our most common currency and the cost of things is usually expressed in how many gold coins it's worth. Common things like everyday food or ordinary clothing usually costs less than a single gold coin. Art or fine, non-magical armor can cost a few hundred. Magical items, like our weapons and armor, may cost many thousands of gold coins."

She puts the coins down and continues. "Unless you have many thousands of coins hidden away somewhere you will likely have to trade your goods for coin which then you can use to purchase anything you want. For that you'll need an experience merchant to figure out what the things you want to sell are worth. While we could try I don't think any of our group has the experience to be certain. We were sent to find you, talk to you, and start friendly relations. Scouts, not diplomats or merchants. Once we report back the leaders of the float will want to make some sort of deal with you. I believe they are trustworthy, but they are merchants trying to make a profit. Just remember that you have the advantage in negotiations. They have to go through you to get anything they want from the forest; our people don't have the knowledge of it to find the most valuable things. Don't let them force you into anything you don't like, but be willing to find middle ground.

I think you can likely afford what you want; you seemed to have very fine crafts and I'm sure your woods-lore can find the most valuable plants to sell - anything with healing properties or exotic tastes when brewed is likely valuable."

He has a nagging concern, however, that should the wrong people see the condition of the lizardfolk and their limited number, it is not unlikely that they might chose force rather than bargaining to get what they want.

He turns to the leader and suggests "Slythyl, perhaps it would be wisest for you to send a delegation of your own to come back with us to initiate trade talks rather than have someone from the Float come to you. That way you could see for yourselves what we do and do not have."

DM Robert - day 11 dawns
Thursday October 25th, 2018 9:05:38 PM

Dirk enjoys his meal.

Bartomus suggests that the driuds on the Float act as trade representatives.

Dorbin continues to take notes.

Stock is unsure if the druids would be impartial. Sid might have some connections in the lumber industry. Stock recommends the lizard folk make sure they have a way to control the lumberjacks.

Zanderallen does not think the druids would be that impartial.

Sid offers the bows of the Split Arrow as a trade factor.

Stohp cuts to the chase pointing out what currency is, how it works, and the like. She points out that in terms of negotiating lumber rights the Lizard folk have the advantage. But also points out that art and crafts are a means of bringing in coin.

Micah suggests that the Lizard Folk send a delegation back with them, rather than have the Float see their current condition.

Slythyl nods at all that is said. "Your words are wise. Please rest and we will talk more in the morning."

Night passes uneventfully, if you need healing, perhaps the cleric and paladin can dish some more out.

That morning the village wakens with the dawn. How they can tell it's dawn is a mystery to you. It still seems dim and twilight like to you because of all the trees. But there is much activity going on. You see the Lizard Folk bringing a lot of items to the large eating area were the feast was last night. Many of the women are frantically weaving large baskets.

When Slythyl sees you he motions you over. "Greetings, we have taken your words to heart. We are gathering much of our artwork to take to the Float to sell.

Bartomus walked over to where Slytyl was with the various lizard folk. He nodded as the elder mentioned the artwork and Bartomus found himself looking through the wares. The basket work was intricate in the designs that the women's claw tipped fingers were weaving. His attention remained with artisans as he walked about only looking up at Slytyl spoke.

When the lizard druid spoke about his gifts, Bartomus pulled himself away from the artisans and crafters to accept the proffered necklace. The workmanship of the piece incorporated patterns similar to those being woven or on the other pieces being packaged for trade at the Float. "Thank you, thank you so much."

Before heading to bed Zanderallen spends the last of his divine reserves to offer some healing to those still wounded. He also does what he can to provide proper bandaging and salves to the worst of the wounds and burns.

Seeing Elderberry in a bit of a pickle Zanderallen calls him over, "Elderberry, come over here. Micah you can help as well. Wearing such armor as we do offers great protection but some work and practice is required to wear it comfortably. We can aid each other in donning our armor and you can learn how it is done." Zanderallen has Elderberry help him into his plate armor and performs the same service in return. Asking for Micah's particular knowledge of smithing and arms crafting to help get all the various buckles and straps properly set for the lizard man warrior. Once the armor has been properly fitted and donned Zanderallen steps back to survey the warrior, "Now that is much better. You will bring fear to your enemies and inspire your friends. I pray there is never need for us to join together in battle again but if the need arises I would be glad to fight alongside you again Elderberry."

When Slythyl presents them with the necklaces Zanderallen bows and thanks him, "These are truly noble gifts. I trust we will meet again as friends and allies. May Domi grant you courage and resolve in the coming times."

Finding some time when he can talk to the group privately Zanderallen broaches the subject of the council, "I think it would be wise to use a sending to announce our coming with ambassadors. Maybe something along the lines of, 'We have met with the Lizard folk tribes. First contact was friendly but they had reservations. However after being attacked by a horde of hobgoblins descending from the mountains they have found a desire to find friends in their neighbors, even though they utterly destroyed the invaders. We are bringing representatives from the tribe to meet. We will arrive at the docks in how ever many days, we suggest meeting the delegation with full honors.' What does everyone think?"

Zanderallen takes his necklace and I assume when he is able tells the others that they are Necklaces of Adaptation. He helps Elderberry and puts forth a proposal for a message to be sent.

Stock takes his necklace and is ready to head out.

Dorbin wonders if the Lizard Folk should hit the Float with so much goods at once.

Micah heals everyone. He likes Zanderallen's message idea to the council.

Stohp thinks the Lizard Folk are fine with hitting the markets hard and creating demand. No one says everything will be sold in the Float itself. Merchants may snag it for exporting as well.

Sid writes a letter home. He takes his necklace and introduces the concept of shaking hands to the Lizard Folk.

The time comes and the wares are packed. Their burdens certainly look cumbersome.

Slythyl casts a spell and walks into an old hickory tree.

It will take you 3 days of steady travel to get to the turtle boat. Which means you will just make your 2 week deadline for pickup.

With you on the trip; Elderberry looking good in breastplate and greaves, Cactusflower carrying some of the more precious craft items, Does anyone cast detect magic? Rosethorn, Thunderheart, and Tangleweed bearing heavy poles across their shoulders weighed down with large baskets at either end.

During the three days of travel whom and how do you wish to interact with the Lizard Folk accompanying you?
Some of what is asked of you, involves customs, human reactions to lizard kind, etc.
Elderberry will attempt to engage the warriors in some practice combat.
Cactusflower you discover is a cleric Caeroldra.

"Oh, I like that message," Bartomus added with a nod. He smiled and looked at Zander, "That should put the Council one a bit of an uncertain footing and curb a bit of their arrogance. Raises the standing of our new companions as well. Really like that."

As they got their goods together, Bartomus pulled Micah and Zander aside. "We need to work on how they address the Council. They need to be seen as equals, and I think we need to help them with that performance. Not with magics, but with acting and confidence. The Float is going to be overwhelming to them. Was to me when I first came aboard. We probably need to teach them a few specific lines of Common for the introductions."

As they plod down the road for the next few days, Dirk spends most of his time reading and sketching in his map book. He also takes some time to talk to Cactusflower a little about the arts of healing to get a better understanding of it. Also for his notes, he also asks about her about her deity so he can have some more information about their culture and beliefs.

Micah takes a deep breath as he processes Bartomus' suggestion. "Yes, most definitely", he responds after a moment's reflection. "We can help them be accepted as equals, by treating them respectfully ourselves. We should also try to delay any formal proceedings, until they have had as much time as possible to acclimate."

When time allows, Micah finishes the mending of Sid's bow. When returning it, he discretely suggests to the elf, "In addition to teaching them phrases and basic etiquette, you might want to come up with a code phrase to warn them when they are about to make a gaffe. If you are up to it, I think it would be good for you to keep an eye on them."

Along the journey, he sits with Cactusflower and asks about how the lizardfolk worship Caeroldra. Given the opportunity he warns her (?) about some recent religious events that occurred in the Float. "There was a sect within the worships of Caeroldra," he explains, "That called themselves the Hands of Love. Unbeknownst to most of its adherents, it was being manipulated by a corrupt minotaur, using them for his own criminal purposes. Most of their heresy was purged, but I fear there are still some vestiges of those teachings to be found.

"Unless there are any objections this is the message we are sending to the council, 'Lizardfolk cordial first contact reservation towards treaty*Hobgoblin horde attacked but utterly destroyed*Opened leadership to talk alliance* Delegation arriving five days*receive full honors*', I think that conveys the ideas we want to convey in our limited words."

(OOC: the "*"s in the message represent pauses in talking to give separation between ideas. Message to be sent before beginning travel. 5 days based off 2 days of sailing on the lake, change if I'm wrong.)

As they travel Zanderallen gravitates towards Elderberry as a fellow warrior. He gladly spares with him, holding back at first to get a feel for Elderberry's skill. If it is far inferior he tones down his swordplay but in the much more likely case Elderberry is equal to or superior to Zanderallen he gives it all he's got. As they travel he freely answers questions, working at trying to pick up the language.

DM Robert - day 14 on the boat
Monday October 29th, 2018 9:00:56 PM

Bartomus thinks the Lizard folk need to have some help in confidence and presenting themselves.

If you recall from the council meeting...Elderberry and Cactusflower both speak Common, as well as Draconic, maybe some other languages as well.

Sid seems to think he can teach phrases.

Dirk stays mostly to himself but tries to engage Cactusflower in the ways of healing.
Knowledge Religion 15 Highlight to display spoiler: {You get the sense that Cactusflower is more a novice in her worship of Caeroldra, so somewhere between level 4-5. This is strange as she is an elderly Lizard Folk, say about 60 in human years.}

Micah finishes the bow repair. He offers some tips in advising the delegation. When talking with Cactusflower he comes to a realization.
Knowledge Religion 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { Her understandings of the teaching's are probably fairly pure and unbiased. They are fairly limited in scope as well. You sense that she is a novice in being a cleric, maybe level 4-5.}
She thanks Micah for telling her of the problems facing others worshiping Caeroldra.

Stohp asks about the lizardfolk culture. Their language is purely draconic. Probably comes from one being a base race language, and two from having dragons be your masters and you their slaves for many generations. Otherwise they are more along the lines of American Indians in culture, but not the nomadic plains Indians. Which would make them still fairly sophisticated. You realize they are not just hicks in the woods.

Dorbin lectures on the float. Elderberry seems to be paying a great deal of attention to the lectures and often asks some very pointed and intelligent questions about politics and the seeming cast system of the Float. It also appears Thunderheart and Tangleweed are trying to follow along as well. They may be attempting to learn the language.

Stock has a mission. Keep the party moving and get to the turtle.

Zanderallen composes a message to be sent to the Float, and it is sent. Message is fine, it will definitely give them some things to think about. You did have 2 scrolls, and Sid did buy a couple of feathers. In sparring with Elderberry, Zanaderallen realizes they may be equally matched but Elderberry definitely has the edge. Full Warrior class with feats to match, but level 8 as opposed to your Paladin warrior skills.

All in all the days pass quickly. You get the sense that Eldeberry and Cactusflower are not country bumpkins. Elderberry is about 35-40 in human years, and Cactusflower is about 55 or so in human years. They have long experience in dealing with clan politics and the manipulations of a dissatisfied wizard wanting to change how things are done. Elderberry is shrewd tactican and one night when Micah is going through his pack setting up camp Elderberry asks about the chess set. If you recall Stock saw a finely crafted chess set back in the village. Elderberry challenges Micah to a game and soundly beats him. Elderberry tries to pass it off as some lucky breaks but also gives Micah some pointers in use of the knight for unexpected attacks.

Cactusflower seems to be the head of the delegation. Elderberry defers to her if she voices an opinion on something. You're not sure if it because of age, if the lizard folk are a matriarchal society, or if she just has a higher political rank than him.

Rosethorn trudges along, happy to be a strong back. He also wants in on some of the practice with Zanderallen but Zanderallen realizes he is a novice (1st level) with the sword and takes it easy on him.
Thunderheart is lean but always hungry. He is constantly asking about breaking for a snack and trying to pluck some fruit and eat it while he tries to balance his load.
Tangleweed seems a little distant, except when Dorbin is lecturing. He seems to be trying to follow along with things. He even begins asking some questions in very broken common.
Sense Motive 15Highlight to display spoiler: {He seems to be thinking about something a lot as if wrestling with some inner demons. }
If you made the above roll Highlight to display spoiler: { if you want to engage with him, he reveals that his vison quest had him dying at the hands of the Trolls. With your intervention that has not happened. So he has been given a new lease on life. He's not sure what he wants to do with this life now.}

At last you get to the turtle and board the boat. Your pilot is surprised at the extra passengers, but the turtle is well able to handle the load. After 2 days of travel the Float comes in view in the distance.

DM MikeK - Welcome to the Float
Tuesday October 30th, 2018 9:56:28 PM

Zanderallen sends his message to Lord Yeager, and soon enough receives a reply.
Excellent. Plan arrival at northmost dock. Well done.

The trip to the Float is spent providing a crash course in Float politics, diplomacy, customs, and even some basic Common for the younger lizardfolk. Tangleweed in particular is buoyed by all the supportive remarks, and takes a renewed interest in learning the tongue.

Riding on a Turtleboat, even one as large as this, does not allow for chess pieces or sparring, and those activities must be put aside for another time.

As the Float comes into view, all five lizard folk are suitably impressed.
“By the Dragon,” Elderberry breathes. “You speak truly. It is a city that floats on the lake.”
The warrior stares for some time, and then sets his shoulders.
Sense Motive DC15 Highlight to display spoiler: { The fellow is mentally gearing himself up for the task at hand. }

Rounding the city, the turtle boat approaches the northernmost dock. And, the reaction to Zanderallen’s message is revealed.
The Turtle boat slides up to the dock. Elderberry is standing ramrod straight on its approach, and growls under his breath to his group.
Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: { “Remember who you are. They attempt to awe us.”}

The turtle boat has come to a halt at the end of the dock. Standing under a pavilion on the pier are the three council members. The entire dock between the turtle and the pavilion has been covered in a huge, lush, red carpet. An honor guard lines the dock, a pair of guardsmen spaced out at 20 foot intervals. The nearly two dozen guardsmen, all minotaurs, wear mithril full plate that gleam in the sun, and are adorned with a deep blue surcoat of silk bearing the sigil of the Floating City. Their mithril helms are stylized with large dragon heads on top, giving added height, so that each gleaming guardsmen stands 9 feet tall. They also carrying huge mithril halbreds, adding another foot and a half to the effect.

Elderberry walks ahead of the group. He’s doing a rather excellent job keeping his composure, and strides forth as if he’s seen such spectacle every day. The other four are awestruck, and are having a hard time from huddling together down the exact middle of the dock to keep equidistant from each guardsman.

Upon reaching the pavilion, Elderberry stops, gives each of the council persons (whom Zanderallen described previously) a short nod, and states, “I am Elderberry, of the River Nation.”

The reaction of the Council members to the appearance of the five lizardmen is...subdued.

The members of the Shields have varied reactions. Bartomus, Dorbin, Sid, and Dirk are subdued. Stock is, well, Stock. Micah attempts to give Zanderallen an opening. Zanderallen makes it plain the welcoming reception is entirely appropriate for beings of Elderberry’s and Cactusflower’s stature.

All three Council Persons glance over at Stock as he makes his remark. None choose to comment, although they all seem to have understood him.
Worse, the dwarf finds no food is in the offering, at least not here.

Yeager is apparently at a loss after Zanderallen's speech, and neither Crowl nor Peermion seem inclined to help the fellow out.

Instead, Elderberry speaks up.
“Your welcome is most impressive, Lords and Ladies. Equally impressive are your emissaries, these Silver Shields. My Lord Slythyl has judged them, and found them to be courageous, strong, and true. “

He pauses a beat or two before adding, “We hope we find similar qualities within the city they represent.”

Lord Yeager, a welcoming grin now fixed in place, responds smoothly, keeping his attention on the lizardman.
“Yes. The Shields are quite a treasure. And so, as we’ve been reminded, are the goods you have brought with you.”

Yeager stops, and waits a few moments.
Sense Motive DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { He assumes the trove are meant to be gifts, and expects Elderberry to present them.}

Elderberry seems to understand the Lord’s meaning, but takes no immediate action.
He waits a few more beats before turning to regard the assembled gear, as if just now recalling it was there.
Turning back, he says, “We believe them to be of use for trade. Perhaps you can introduce us to honest merchants who will give us fair price for them.”

Peerimon is enjoying this immensely.
Crowl looks like she ate something sour.
Yeager’s mouth drops open for a moment, but he recovers quickly.
“Ah. Yes. I’m sure we can recommend suitable partners.”
The man deftly changes the subject.
“We’ve prepared a reception tonight at our hall. We are prepared to billet you and your people at one of our finer hostels until then.”

Elderberry needs help with ‘hostel’, and turns to Zanderallen for a definition.

Following that, he waves a hand across his chest, a motion the group understands to be a negative.
“You honor us, but we would prefer to keep our trade goods with the Shields. Until we’ve grown to know you as we know them.”

Yeager again finds himself at a loss. Again, he recovers.
“Of course. We will see you at 7 bells then.”

With that, the three councilpersons turn as one, and move to another carpet, attended by four of the minotaur honor guard. As soon as all seven are on it, it lifts into the air, floats out over the water, and then rises to the highest level of the Float, where it disappears. The remaining eight guardsmen trot away, and suddenly the dock is empty.

Elderberry turns to Zanderallen and Micah. He appears completely calm.
“Interesting. May we impose upon you, friend Zanderallen?”

Bartomus looked back and forth at his fellow Shields. "Stohp, I think we need to find allies. Quickly, I think."

The thoughts in his mind swirled about as he tried to find the best means of expressing his concerns. "The Council expects to control the entire situation. But, we need to find them merchant allies, cultural allies, that could be a counter-balance to the powers associated with the Council. If we could find allies that would benefit from their association with the folk, and being willing to protect that benefit and the folk, we could bolster everyone's position. Does that make any sense?"

He paused and looked back at the others. "We could also add the Adventure's Guild, and the Druids to the list of potential allies, I would think."

I'm sure they wouldn't mind opening up a chapter with the Lizardmen but beyond that, what would they have to gain? The answer is probably with the Druids and the tradesmen."

Zanderallen contains his mirth at Lord Yeager's diplomatic losses. 'Didn't expect to be met as only equals by the backwards forest folk did you mighty lord?', he thinks to himself. He of course offers no help to the confused lord and let's him muddle his way out as best he can. After they depart he turns to Elderberry, "I must make apologies if your welcome seemed less than it should be. Being rulers of such a great city they can fall prey to equating grand appearance to worth. They offered house you, a hostel is a longhouse set aside for guests and visitors to the city. But we you can stay in our headquarters until you and the council come to better understanding with one another. It is not as grand or lavish as what the council could offer but it is comfortable and has plenty of room. Perhaps while we wait for the evenings festivities you can meet with the merchants of the fence level, who have long been our friends. Follow us." Zander then leads the way back home. On the way he motions a youth over and hands him a silver piece and a message for Happy. " We have friends staying with us from the lizardfolk nation in the forest. If you wanted to gather together some of the fence merchants for a meet and greet at Shield HQ we are not due at the Council Hall till 7 bells."

Micah carefully maintains a calm visage during the exchange. He realizes that Zanderallen is playing a dangerous game, but cannot find himself able to disagree with his approach.

In response to Bart's voiced concern, he looks around in the crowd until he sees a young familiar face, not surprised to see one of the ubiquitous urchins nearby.

Waving them over, he offers, "A copper to the first one of you who can name me and tell me the addresses of my parents' shop and the Silver Shield's headquarters."

Upon receiving a correct answer he produces the offered prize and adds, "Take the note I am about to my Father write and return with his reply and I will trade that copper for a gold. This will take a while to write, so be patient," he adds as he starts writing his letter.

The note reads as follows:

Mattus Smith:
Father, I am in the presence of representatives of the lizardfolk from the mainland who wish to trade with the Float. We are to meet with the council at 7 bells, but I want those emissaries to start meeting merchants immediately. We are heading to the Silver Shields' headquarters now from the northmost dock.

While the lords were almost certainly intending to take advantage of the lizardfolk we can't risk alienating them. If they become our enemies then no matter how many merchants we befriend they can cause us problems."

I think what we should do is show off some things, maybe sell some things to get interest going, but save most of the goods for the lords to look over. That gives us a good bargaining position as word gets around about the strange and valuable goods while still giving the lords the chance to deal for the best items. Heck we could even appease their ego's by saying we made sure to leave the best for them while making it clear that if they don't deal there are plenty other's who would be interested."

DM MikeK - I think we need to find allies. Quickly, I think
Thursday November 1st, 2018 9:23:32 PM

As much as the group enjoyed Lord Yeager’s proverbial beating, everyone agrees that getting some allies not under the thumb of the Council, and in a mighty hurry, is a good idea.

Plans are discussed enroute to Shield HQ.

Zanderallen, Micah, and Sid dispatch various messengers. If they want to dispatch any more, the sound of money has attracted every street urchin for several blocks.

The result is very much like a parade down Lakeview Passage. Several larger boys have taken it upon themselves to race ahead, calling loudly for everyone to make way. Next come the Silver Shields, as well as the strange lizard men, all still dressed as to make an appearance, as well as carrying along a trove of goods. Bringing up the rear, a gaggle of younger children, all vying to be the next lucky soul selected to be a runner.

Naturally, various shopkeepers and merchants come out to see what the fuss is about, and are more than ready to doff a cap, or present a curtsy, and shout a greeting as the train rolls by.

All and all, by the time they’ve reached their door, which Briadoc opens precisely on time, all can agree the Fence Level has given their visitors all they could have asked for by way of welcome.

Several of the Lakeview Passage shopkeepers would be more than happy to stay, if invited in, although Sid knows they all run Mom and Pop shops like himself.

Eli arrives shortly thereafter, and is introduced to all.

And Happy himself some time later. The innkeeper extends a hand to each of the lizardfolk, and then proceeds to teach each of them the custom of shaking hands.
He turns to Zanderallen.

“If you’re planning to keep that hoard here,” he notes, indicating the lizard folk’s goods, “might be a better idea if you met all the merchants and hangers on at the Ghost. No worries about nogoodniks poking around your place. And, mine’s bigger anyway.”
Sense Motive DC10 Highlight to display spoiler: { And he’ll have an inn full of people buying drinks. He knows you’ve seen through that, and gives you a wink,}

Turning more serious, he asks, “So, you’ve got a completely new source of trade, and you brought them here and not to the nobles upstairs. What’s your plan here anyway?”

Regardless of the location, the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon will be filled with various merchants of varying degrees of reputability arriving to discuss business. Elderberry, as evidenced with the Council, is quite the diplomat. And Cactusflower proves quite adept at appraising the various examples of items offered for review. The three younger lizardfolk do their best to watch, listen, and learn. But, they’re getting overwhelmed.

Micah’s parents also stop by, with a couple workers of stone and wood in tow.

The group has pretty much the day to stay and hobnob, keep an eye on things, or run errands.
Elderberry will want either Micah or Zanderallen to be around.

Also, as a side note, Lord Yeager invited Elderberry to the reception. It is not clear whether or not anyone else was included.

Plus, a few existing agreements before the reception might be of help."

He looked about and then looked at himself. "We need to probably spruce up a bit as well. Also, I will take a couple of the messenger wanna bes and head to the Grove to meet with the Druids. Might be worth having them at least aware of what we found."

He rubbed his chin as he listened to the others nodding in agreement with their suggestions. "Stohp's right, we can't upset the Lords and Ladies, but ensuring a balance seems right. Elderberry, what do you feel would be the best for your people in all of this?"

The lizardfolk are a proud and reserved people and let's just say there is still some ice to be broken between them and the council lords and ladies. Until the council decides it has the time to meet with Elderberry I want them to meet some of the good honest people of the Fence. You all are our friends and have treated us right, we'd like to return some of the favor.", pulling over Bart and some of the other Shields he continues, "but no undermining the council. The are the legitimate rulers of the Float and unless they do something to betray the Float that's where they shall remain. Being the rulers however does not entitle them to monopolizing resources in the forest. So meet and greet. talk and plan but no signing of trade contracts until Elderberry and Cactusflower speak with the council."

While he has Happy's attention Zander poses some questions to him, "Happy, seems the more we get involved with things in the Float the more mention of a group of adventurers called the Crimson Shields we run across. Do you know any of their history or where we might be able to find any of them?"

"For the reception tonight at the council hall, Elderberry was invited and I'm guessing he will take Cactusflower with him. Do we all want to serve as an honor guard to take him to the hall and then be waiting to take him back here? Lord Yeager kind of made it sound like we weren't invited. But i'd rather not leave Elderberry and Cactusflower to travel the Float alone."

Stohp does her best to explain. "We're going to meet the lords but we're concerned that they'll do their best to cheat the lizardfolk out of a fair trade deal. So to hedge our bets we're making sure word gets out and enticing the merchants. With everyone clamoring for the valuables the Lizardfolk can provide we're in a much stronger bargaining position for when we meet the lords. They'll deal, and fairly, because the alternative is to miss out on the profits of a new market and with everyone so excited someone else will deal if they don't."

As to the meeting, Stohp has this to say. I'm confident in Elderberry's ability to manage the lords but we should definitely have some of us come along to help explain things. I wouldn't put it past the lords to try to find an advantage through focusing on things they think our guests won't understand. Maybe offering a deal in some weird currency or strange, exotic goods. Maybe something more subtle or cultural. We shouldn't all go, just one or two of us. Maybe the best at appraising things and the best at diplomacy?"

I think that would be Micah (Dip 15) and Dorbin? (appraise 14)"

Everyone takes a bit of time and cleans up.

Dorbin and Dirk stay with the lizardfolk in the inn and help with appraising.

Bartomus heads up to the grove.

Zanderallen asks Happy some questions in the Inn.

Micah gives Elderberry some advice. Titles were never really discussed in the Lizard folk community. Members of the Council were sort of universally appointed based on skills or knowledge. The best human equivalent for him would be General as he was the commander of the Lizard Folk armed forces and oversaw their training. Cactus Flower would be Craftmaster, or maybe Guildmaster.

Stohp tries to explain to the lizard folk what's going on.

After a quick cleaning up, the group heads to The Giggling Ghost.

Of course word has gone ahead and there seems to be a line of sorts forming. Happy leads the group in and has a couple of tables pushed together in the back of the room. The Lizard Folk are seated in the center but their is room on the sides for the shields. The front is left open of chairs to provide for everyone at the table seeing into the inn and of course everyone in the inn being able to see the 'main attraction'.

Happy has set up a rotating line at the bar. This is for the curious seekers. They come in get a small beer, look and drink and then they have to leave to make room for the next patron. The other tables are of course reserved for the more merchants and other notables.

Happy treats your table with a variety of small delicacies, appetizers, hors d'oeuvres, Canapes, amuse-bouche, and apertifs are offered. Happy explains, "I'm not sure what their diet is so I've worked a deal with the Grokk and Brassy and we're all putting forth a variety of things for them."

When Zanderallen asks his question Happy is momentarily taken aback. You can see he gets a far away look in his eyes, and perhaps is a bit misty eyed. At last he shakes his head as if to clear it. "Well certainly. Many don't realize it but Paragon Lord Belkior, heads the Temple of Alemi on the Gold Level, and is a member of the Council."

The Lizard Folk have only brought a few items to wet the appetites of the merchants. It is not the best work they brought with them, nor is it the least of the items they brought with them. The matter of guards for the goods is discussed and quickly taken care of. Rodrigo and three competent looking swordspersons arrive in response to Sid’s letter, and soon enough, an arrangement is worked out that allows Sid to join the rest at the Giggling Ghost.

The Shields try to guide the lizardfolk contingent through the morass of buyer, sellers, and merchantmen. After a short time, the group catches on, and starts following a standard pattern. The three younger lizardmen stick to Stohp, and as it becomes obvious they’re the junior group, and speak little common, they’re pretty much left alone.

Cactus Flower proves quite able to compare the quality of crafted items, and is more than willing to debate relative craftsmenship - this is better than that, etc. But, as soon as talk of money comes up, she defers to Elderberry.

And Elderberry is quite able to hold his own with the merchants. He soon has his own mental list going of who can be trusted, and who has the means to pull off the logistical enterprise of trading across half a lake. Micah, Sid, and Zanderallen find his list closely parallels their own.

Zanderallen attempts to work himself an introduction with elf Happy pointed out, while Stock just plops right down and starts talking.
A bemused half grin crosses the elf’s face as he stands and offers a hand.
Ike Holmes makes the formal introductions.

“Zanderallen and Stock, of the Silver Shields, this is Syrdeth Redbow, president of Shieldhouse Construction.”

Redbow shakes with each of them.
“Happy has been telling tales, I presume,” he remarks. “Tales best saved for another time and place.” The elf deftly turns the conversation to the opportunities afforded by the arrival of the lizardmen, taking advantage of Stock's opening to discuss the need of a middleman to handle a possible lumbering venture.

The afternoon passes, tentative alliances formed, Thunderheart gets enough to eat, and even Tangleweed starts to relax a little.

As the group turns to go, Redbow appears beween Zanderallen and Elderberry.
“Lady Crowl and Lord Peerimon would like nothing more that for your group to arrive at their gates on foot, having climbed several Levels in the process,” he advises the Lizardfolk. “If you would be willing to accept a small token of faith from Shieldhouse, I possess a conveyance that might be more...appropriate for the occasion. Stock barks a laugh a Dorbin's comment. "Their games are not for you and I, mage. We are like fans at the turtle boat races. It's just a matter if you are the kind of fan that rips your shirt of and paints your chest or claps politely as the boats come down the final stretch....I'm sure you can guess which one I am."

"Are we all going to the reception? I could use another bite to eat and I'm sure they'll have good fare up there."

Zanderallen talks with Redbow and his fellow merchants for a bit picking up the hint and making sure the conversation stays far away from such topics. When he moves on he gives Redbow a significant look and says, "It was nice to meet you Redbow, I'm sure we'll have more to talk about at a different time and place. It seems the lizardfolk have some definite connections to your business." Once free Zanderallen observes the interactions of the lizardfolk and the merchants and finding that Elderberry and Cactus Flower fully possess the discernment he would hope from elders of their tribe he leaves them to their own devices, near at hand it they have questions, but otherwise taking the opportunity to catch up with old acquaintances. "That is a most generous offer Redbow, we will be there."

"As for who all is going, we weren't directly invited so, I don't know. It somewhat depends on Elderberry's wishes. I could see wisdom in my personal absence, I have been somewhat open about my views as to their actions and some of them may hold it against me. Micah can do just as well as a spokesman and has a rather cooler head than mine, or Stohp you could as well. The council is sure to have heard what we did here so there is chance of some coldness in our reception. We could all go to the council level and while a couple of us go in the rest could go to a nearby tavern for a good meal and yet still be near at hand. Or Elderberry could bring us all in as attached members of his retinue. What does everyone think?"

Micah cannot suppress his smile as Zanderallen suggests he might be a bit too impetuous for the council meeting.

"Elderberry and Cactus Flower appear up to be up to the task of dealing with the council", he says to the Shields.

"I say we leave it up to Elderberry whether we join them in the meeting or not; in fact we must. Since he was the recipient of the invitation rather than us, our attendance could only properly be at his request. I am willing to assist should he desire. I am also willing to stay out of it should he desire that.

"What I am not inclined to do is leave him unprotected against the dangers this city might pose to him outside of the council building. We have seen that some within this city are perfectly willing to disturb its piece if they judge the potential gain to be sufficient.

"I say we insist on escorting them to and from the meeting and offer our willingness to be present during the meeting only should they request so. "

Unless any dissent is voiced, he makes that offer to Elderberry.

Between helping/managing the younger group Stohp tries to keep track of the conversation the others are having. "Their machinations may seem silly from here but in the battle of politics it's deadly serious. To make the changes and address the needs you feel are most important you have to convince others and every tiny amount of leverage you can get is necessary. Someone unfamiliar with martial arts may find the strong focus on footwork equally silly but any warrior will tell you it's far more important than your ability to hit really hard.

As for the meeting, of course it's Elderberries choice who should go. We can still make a suggestion to him to take or leave as he wills. I personally feel that he shouldn't go alone because of those political games that will be played. With our different cultures it would be easy for a minor difference to become a real problem. With someone along to point out those small things as they happen I'm sure he'll adapt quickly and ably."

Bartomus figures himself ready to go.

Dorbin grumbles about politics. Stock agrees.
Stohp offers a differing viewpoint.
Redbow apparently overhears them.
“As your group grows in power and fame, you will find yourselves drawn relentlessly into this next arena,” he cautions. “And your friend (Stohp) speaks wisely. Political machinations kill just as swiftly as sword and spell. Some among you must become just as strong with that weapon as with any other.”

When Zanderallen agrees to take the elf up on his offer, he smiles.
“My friends call me Syr.”

Everyone retires back to Shield HQ for some quick planning.

Elderberry considers.
”I suspect this reception will more resemble a hunt,” the lizardman offers. “Some will seek out the frail and unsuspecting, and strike. I would like the younglings to stay with some of you, good friends.”

Thunderheart and Rosethorn look rather relieved not to have to through this again, but Tangleweed is defiant.
“I wish to go. My purpose is here, somewhere. I need to find it.”

Elderberry nods. “Very well.”
He turns to Zanderallen. “I would ask that some of you join us, as our guests and guides. And the rest to show Thunderheart and Rosethorn more of your city, as you go about whatever duties are called for you. I take no offense at who chooses which path. Not all enjoy such battles, and I would not force it upon them for my sake.”

"Bartomus, I think you would make a good addition to Elderberry's retinue. You have a calming demeanor and a good eye for crafted goods and their value."

"Sid and Stohp, one of you should come with us and the other with the others. I would request, however, that Stohp be the one to come to the council. Your preference to avoid violence might be quite an asset in the assembly". As the says this, he intentionally avoids looking in Zanderallen or Stock's direction.

The group agrees to split up.

Elderberry, CactusFlower, Tangleweed, Zanderallen, Micah, Bartomus, and Stohp retrace their route back down Lakeview Passage toward the docks. On the street facing the dock is the office and warehouse of Shield Construction.

Syr greets everyone at the door, and leads them to his warehouse. The large doors are open, revealing a good-sized carpet lying on the floor.
Perception DC10 Highlight to display spoiler: { It looks an awful lot like the one the Councilpersons flew off in earlier this morning.}

“I have an open account with Gordo’s Transport,” Syr says. “Past services rendered kind of thing. This is Tilak.”
Tilak is a halfling, dressed in black trousers and a white shirt, bearing the insignia of Gordo’s Transport.
Knowledge Local DC10 Highlight to display spoiler: { Gordo’s Transport is a taxi service for the rich, based out of the Gold Level.}

Tilak invites everyone onto the carpet, calls out, “Please don’t move,” and does….something.

The carpet rises off the ground, slowly, so it remains surprisingly stable. Unyielding to the weight of taurs, lizardmen, and humans, it eases out of the warehouse, climbs over the docks, and then ascends to the Open Air level on top of the city.
Apparently following some kind of prescribed path, Tilak glides the carpet down the Diamond Midway, cuts across the Arena, and sets down in a garden/magic carpet parking area next to a large, well filled, lanai.

As the carpet sets down, Lord Yeager is there.
He gives Elderberry a nod, and takes the group in with a deprecating smile.
“Again you prove yourselves most resourceful, but I shall not underestimate your capabilities again. Welcome, all of you. Please join us.”

----

Thunderheart, Rosethorn, Sid, Stock, Dorbin, and Dirk take the scenic route.

First stop is the Split Arrow, because what’s the point of leading a tour without showing off a bit. Sid gives a quick tour of the fletchery, pointing out the more well-made bows and specialized arrows. Rosethorn, in particular, is quite impressed.

Then, its up the northeast tower stairs the Barracks Level. Down Boot Camp Road, past multiple shops selling swords, axes, and armor. Rosethorn and Thunderheart force the group to stop time and time again. There’s more metal on this one street than the pair has seen in their lives, and they are stunned by the quantity.
Draconic Highlight to display spoiler: { How much of this would our trade goods be able to get? }

And then, pub number one. The Broad Blade, on the southeast side of the Barracks Level. Sid has been here before, and rather likes it. It’s mostly frequented by mid level NCOs and an occasional low powered adventuring group - just enough money and rank to keep the goons out, but still a friendly, down-to-earth crowd.

There are empty tables, if the group wishes to eat. Or there’s room at the bar.

Bartomus recognized the area of the docks they were heading to. When the got to the Shield Construction warehouse, he chuckled, "Well, we gotta like this company just from its name."

He followed the others in and stood at the back as Syr explained his relationship with Gordo Transport. He felt that they were going to leave an impression with those they were going to meet. Gordo's was the transporters of the rich and famous on the float. The large carpet they were led to was stunning in its weave and colors. "I think it might be the one the Council used earlier today," he whispered to anyone near him.

If the carpet wasn't impressive enough, the smooth sailing of it by Tilak was an amazing experience for Bartomus. He got to see the float from a completely different perspective. The size of the structure and the number of inhabitants surprised him. He knew it was big place, but now he had to adjust his impressions to what he was seeing. The Float was huge.

When they landed, he turned and thanks Tilak for the amazing ride. His face beamed his excitement that still filled his face when Lord Yeager addressed them. Bartomus stayed silent, but focused his attention on the Councilor.

When they get to the Blade Sid orders for everyone and pushes them to a table on the edges of the floor, and brings them their drinks making sure that Stock has his juice and Dorbin has something nice that Sid would know he would like. At the Palace -

Syr's actions put the Shields at ease. Lord Yeager's greeting, not so much. Nevertheless, both Bartomus and Zanderallen come away with the impression that the man is trying to make up for this morning's gaffes.

With a wave he beckons Elderberry and everyone else to accompany him. Elderberry falls into step beside the Lord, and Cactusflower and Tangleweed follow behind. Assuming some of the Shields do as well, Lord Yeager first escorts the group to each of the Council Members in attendance.

It turns out, they all are.
Lord Peerimon and Lady Crowl have been met before, and the demeanor of neither has changed much.
Lord Faustus, a very handsome half elf.
Lady Erendel, an elf.
Lord Zeron, a liontaur.
And, Paragon Lord Belkior, a hafling dressed in a bright white robe and wearing a silver chain from which hangs the symbol of Alemi. He is by far the most striking of the Council members, because just being near him brings feeling of peace and health. You can practically feel the minor cuts, aches, and bruises of the day fading away.

Afterwards, more introductions to various merchants and agents of merchants. In fact, the whole scene rather quickly turns into a repeat of the proceedings at The Giggling Ghost, just with a lot (a lot) more money.

At the Broad Blade -

Stock works on getting to know Thunderheart better. However, the lizardman’s Common is rudimentary, so a lot of time is spent working on words. Even so, the fellow’s interest in the weaponry is obvious.

Dorbin and Dirk have a hankering to get to the Library.

Sid gives Rosethorn and Thunderheart the opportunity to get to the bar on their own, but neither takes him up on it. The rogue does note both seem put off by the bitterness of the house ale, and seem to be giving Stock’s drink an inquisitive eye.

The tour guide stops off a Message in a Bottle Tavern, complete with a person sized green glass bottle practically filled with scraps of paper. This tavern is something of a tourist attraction, and is bustling this evening. A waitress meets the group at the door, gives the lizard men a curious eye, and leads everyone to a table.

Dirk decides to wander just a little bit, but stay within eyesight of Dorbin. He takes a casual stroll and breaks out his pipe from his pack and stuffs it full of tobacco. As he lights his pipe and begins to puff away, he casts an eye around.

Dorbin keeps up his conversation with Sid about books, something he clearly likes and knows quite a bit about. When Sid gets excited, Dorbin looks around and says, "I know some people there. I've got an in, and I'm sure I can get you into a few more special places there..."

Zanderallen continues to move about the gathering. While the high society politics side of diplomacy was not his favorite, he much preferred the rough diplomacy of a council of war or individuals in debate, he was quite proficient in it. When he set his mind to it he knew the manners and social conventions fairly well, and could move among nobility with almost as much outward ease as among warriors. He just had to keep telling himself that the best way to avoid conflict between the Float of the Lizardfolk was for peaceful equal trade to occur between them. And meetings like this were the first steps towards that goal. So suck it up, smile, and chat with Lord Yeager about the shocking price of lumber after the recent calamities.

At the Palace -

Elderberry makes his rounds, conversing easily with nobility and merchants alike. The Shields note he is acting much more submissive than usual, praising the power and riches of the city, particularly the palace, in comparison to his own tribe. They also note he doesn’t close any deals with anybody, and the word “yes” seems to have escaped his vocabulary altogether.

Cactus Flower and Micah make the rounds, exchanging pleasantries. After a while, Micah notices several merchants have given up on Elderberry, and instead pursue her, offering up a chance at exclusive contracts along with a pastry. Cactus Flower takes whatever is offered, and then defers all decisions to Elderberry.

Micah takes note of one truly desperate soul who moves on to Tangleweed, and spends nearly half an hour pantomiming out an offer for the young lizardman, who simply points to Elderberry in response.

Zanderallen and Bartomus find a moment to speak to Lord Belkior in relative peace. The halfling is standing on some kind of raised stool that keeps him eye to eye with the paladin, though the taur still looms over both of them.

“Please give Happy my greetings,” he responds to Zanderallen. “It has been too long since I’ve tried my luck at a Flaming Gnomish.” He grins, recalling something. “I wonder if he’d give me that bet now.”
“And, by the look of that rug you came in on, I’m betting you’ve met another old friend as well.”

Belkior smiles up at Bartomus, nearly buckling the taur in its brilliance.
“I would like to take credit, friend Bartomus”, he replies. “But the excursion was mostly Peerimon’s idea. Looking for riches.”
He gives Zanderallen a significant glance.
“That man is ALWAYS looking for riches.”

He turns up towards Bartomus again.
“You, all of you, are welcome to the Temple at any time. I’m in most mornings. Just tell the greeter you are the Shields and seek my counsel. She’ll know where I am. I look forward to meeting with you again.”

Stohp tries to get a sense of the room. More than half the room play good poker. She just can’t tell. The rest are frustrated. The night is passing, and no one has been able to secure any kind of promise from the lizardmen.

---

At the Message in a Bottle Tavern -
Stock and Thunderheart go over the dwarf’s handaxe. The lizardman runs his fingers over the symbols on the heft. He reaches into the sack slung over his shoulder, and pulls out a decent sized war club. The shaft of this weapon is also covered in intricate designs, many looking like leaves, flowers, and plants that Stock suspects are in the woods.

Sid orders more drinks. The Lizardmen work their way through, and agree the cider is tasty, though noting it doesn’t have any kick to it.

After an appropriate stay, the group heads out again.
Sid figures Dorbin just might explode on the street if he stalls any longer.

The group heads up two more levels. On the Gold Level, the sunlight flows warmly onto the streets. Both lizardmen look up, close their eyes and spend a good ten minutes just standing there, and basking. Finally, Dorbin’s fidgeting registers on their senses, and the journey is resumed.

There on Silver Street sits the Library, a four story edifice of knowledge.

Dirk has been keeping an eye out, but other than the odd look of curiosity, the bard is detecting no hostility. Thinking back on it, that is kind of the impression he got back at the Broad Blade - general unease.

"You are very kind, sir," Bartomus made an effort to lower himself a bit closer to the halfling Lord. He nodded and took a side look at Lord Peerimon. "I will keep that in mind as we deal with these matters, Kind Lord. I will also remember how we can come to you with questions, I suspect there will be many in the weeks to come."

Bartomus gave the halfling a deep bow and then excused himself to wander amongst the guests. He at times came to both of the lizard folk and asked if they needed anything and would hover for a bit, then move on when others came to talk to them. He made a point of coming up to Micah.

"Well Micah, what do you think? Seems that the evening is going well, but not sure how these negotiations may be going though? Should we be doing something?"

"What do you say, Mr. Dorbin? Would you like to make our way towards the library? There are FOUR floors!"

"No" Stohp says to Bart's question. "Elderberry knows what he's doing. He's getting everything interested while not promising anything. If he accepted the first deals then they'd think him an easy mark and try to cheat him. By discussing deals with everyone but promising nothing he gets the lay of the land and with luck they'll end up competing for his good against each other, each trying to offer him a better deal than the rest. Basically the same thing we were doing earlier by talking to the merchants before coming up to this shindig. If any of the nobles try to approach us and deal with do what the lizardfolk are doing and defer to Elderberry."

As they approach the library, Dorbin dusts himself off and turns his back to the structure, starting his lecture. He explains about the history of the building and why it is where it is. He talks about the people who built the building and the materials that were used. He starts describing what types of collections can be found on different floors and goes into detail about the governing structure of the library and how people work in the library and what they do. He talks about the Sage's Guild and describes the functions of the various levels and points out the adjunct Sage guild badge he is wearing. He continues blathering on for quite some time without ever even entering the building...

Stock then reverently hands the weapon back to Thunderheart.

We will be sure to stop by some time soon, I'm not yet sure what our days may look like hosting the lizardfolk but we would love to ask you some questions." Zander bows and takes his leave of the Paragon Lord. Following up on Stohp's reply Zander says, "I think we are close to being able to rest easy regarding the lizardfolk. We've given Elderberry ground to stand upon and he seems more than capable to hold it."

He turns to Bartomus and replies, "I think Elderberry is a match for these diplomats and merchants. That is what I think."

He takes a wary look around before continuing, "I am still concerned for their safety. What we should do for now is keep an eye out for trouble and expect the unexpected."

DM MikeK - The evening wanes
Tuesday November 13th, 2018 8:23:19 PM

At the Palace -

Zanderallen and Bartomus take their leave of Belkior and mingle.
Bartomus asks if they should somehow be helping with negotiations, but Stohp has the way of things...Elderberry is conducting a clinic in playing off multiple competitors against each other.

The reception is beginning to wind down. Several merchants, having secured only the promise of further negotiations, to be held at the Giggling Ghost, have already departed.

The various nobles do try to sate their curiosity regarding the Shields, with several seeking tales around the meteors, the signs, and the coming of the Sargrass.

Micah is able to determine that the merchant he’s been eyeing is one Torrin Cook, who had made some money and went all in on a gamble to open the river south of Cutter for a trade route. The appearance of a ready-made trading partner to the north, and closer than Cutter, is very likely to wipe him out.

At the Library -

Stock, with the help of Sid, asks to carve a commemoration of the Silver Shields into Thunderheart’s axe handle. The lizardman is honored, and promises to hand over the weapon once the tour is over.

But the tour has only begun. In front of the Library, Dorbin goes into full lecture mode. Dirk may be just as interested, but Thunderheart’s and Rosethorn’s interests in books is...well…they’re not. The two stand patiently for as long as they can, but after about ten minutes both turn to Sid.

"Excellent information. But can you give any information about the books themselves? What kind of leather are they bound in? What type of parchment?"

Dirk isn't sure, but he thought he heard a groan behind him. He turns and looks, but doesn't see anyone hurting. He shrugs and turns back to Dorbin.

He smiled and made light conversation with the occasional noble or merchant while he wandered about.

He just gets into it talking about the different materials in the books, the different types of bindings, and even a time when people in the library were employed working to repair bindings of certain kinds and how Dorbin himself once helped out with a few of the experts where they were making glue to help repair some of the bindings for the books in section three of the first floor, which is in the rear section of the library in an area that isn't open to the public because they're often repairing rare books there...

Now kids, I want to emphasis this, we of the Float, and most cultures in the Wold at large do still pass information from their Elders through oral traditions and memory, whether they think of it that way or not, but there are so many things to learn and know that, from this age and ages past, that books and scrolls are important and vital to preserving art, culture, knowledge and wisdom of the current and past eras. If later you are interested you can see if there are any texts about your ancient empire, or while you and yours are searching the ruins of your ancient cities or temples, you might find old tombs of a bygone age. Save these if you can, they are more precious than gold...

Alright, Dorbin, did you want to stay and make your reports? I think we will continue the tour with someplace to spar, or maybe the WLA. What about it Stock, is it time to stretch the muscles a bit?"

Stohp consider's the question but shakes her head. "Now I'm usually the paranoid one but I don't see what they would gain by hiring thugs to attack him. At best they would get the objects they have now but cut off any chances to make a longer term deal."

She considers some more. Then again, maybe if some of the merchants would be ruined by a new trade port or if they feel a competitor is going to get the deal I could see it. We should keep our eyes open."

At the Palace -

The reception dies down. The Shields close ranks on Elderberry and the other lizardmen, wary of last minute shenanigans, but nothing seems to be forthcoming.

Elderberry doesn’t seem surprised.
“I have spent some time in my youth treating with the green dragons who lorded over our tribes,” he reveals. “This is not so much different. The first days are cordial. Events are not forced for some time. The key is to secure agreements before the others have realized they’ve failed.”

There is little to do now but return home.

At the Library -

Dirk and Dorbin exchange ideas, suppositions, questions, and answers in a never-ending reinforcing loop that threatens to suck the very life from Thunderheart and Rosethorn. Stock escapes into mentally preparing for the carving he will soon be working on.

Sid to the rescue. The lizardmen dutifully follow the applause, and brighten considerably at Sid’s suggestions to go spar.

The rogue has also given Dirk and Dorbin an opening to split from their group and go about Library business.

Sid, Stock and the lizardmen spend some time working out, and possibly debriefing at the WLA.

Dorbin and Dirk go about their business.

Soon enough, it becomes so late that even Dorbin has to leave the Library.

--

The next several day pass without incident.
Elderberry, sometimes accompanied by CacutsFlower, but always with Tangleweed (who seems determined to learn as much as he can about the Float, its patrons, and the art of diplomacy) holds court in the various private rooms of the Giggling Ghost.
He seems pleased with his progress.

Happy is more than pleased with his profits.

And the Shields are free to go about whatever business they have at hand.

Bartomus found the memory of the excursion and then the court event of the Council very hard to believe in the days that followed. It a bit unusual to be back at the Float, walking the artisan's shops and booths where he had worked not that long ago. He eventually decided to go visit the Druids.

"Tomorrow morning, I plan to go the Grove and share with the Druids what we found regarding the sacred spaces on our excursion." He said to the Shields and folk. He looked at the lizard folk as he continued to talk. "Anyone want to go with me? I suspect we could also check out the craft and artisan stalls, still have friends there."

It has mixed results.

DM MikeK - Interlude 2

More days pass. The Shields go about their daily tasks - reading, training, keeping an eye on their lizardmen friends, and reporting their adventure to various folks who are likely to be interested.

After a couple weeks, Elderberry and Cactusflower announce they have successfully completed the opening contracts. The lizardmen have consented to a Council request to allow a Float City trading post to be placed at the mouth of the river downstream from River City - essentially creating a single trading partner between River City and the Float.

And then they turned around and awarded governance of that post to Shield Construction.
"Not what Lord Peerimon had in mind." Elderberry remarks drolly.

Additionally, Tangleweed is remaining on the Float as guest of the Council, an ambassador for all intents.

Over this time, Cactusflower has traded nearly all their goods for an impressive array of armor, weapons, steel, and glass (all the lizardmen have become infatuated with glass, especially lamps and mirrors).

Stock, meanwhile gets ample time to do whatever he plans to do with Thunderheart's axe.

The next day, the lizardfolk depart.

And the Shields, who have been understandably preoccupied with their comings and goings, find themselves free to pay more attentions to the pulse of the city, or of training, or of business, or of shopping, or whatever.

Early one morning Stock pops out of bed and and tracks down Thunderheart. As best he can he uses hand signals to mime engraving the lizardman's warclub. After a short while he retrieves the weapon and beckons the lizardman to follow to the workshop.

He begins sketching a shield with waves beneath it. He then begins embellishing around the shield with a wall of brambles like he saw around the druid grove. He finishes the design by carving a single dwarven rune along one edge of the shield.

With Thunderheart's approval, Stock claps his hands together, gets his tools out and begins engraving in earnest.

Bartomus made his visit to The Grove and shared with the druidic leaders what he and his fellow Shields had discovered regarding the sacred places on the North Shore.

He watched the departure of the lizard folk on the turtle that would take them and their new find items back north. He waved for some time and then turned to head back into the hustle and bustle of the Float. He spent some time with the Guild also sharing what they had seen with regard to the forest and the North Shore. He was not too specific about lizard folk's military strength, but did inquire about stories or ancient histories that might have referenced the lizard folk.

He also returned to his bone carving that he had started before the last adventure. The work continued and the carving began to take shape. It was detailed, and his hands took a bit of time to lock into their trained motions. But, the carving soon became an enjoyable adventure of its own. When he needed a break, he would wander about the stalls of the crafters and artisans. He also spent a bit of time looking at the work of weapons makers in hopes of finding one who could either improve his current bone glave with one better crafted fitting for a druid.

Upon reaching it he pays his respects and asks for Lord Belkior. After introductions and greetings are over he turns to his real purpose, "As you may have guessed part of the reason we came to meet you was to ask about your old adventuring group, the Crimson Shields of Hope. We had no idea who you were when we chose our own name but it seems fitting following in your footsteps, I hope with credit. But as you've dealt with things we've had repeated mentions of a Lord Crimson. And we know you were responsible for killing the dragons that once enslaved the lizardfolk. Do you have any idea who this Lord Crimson might be or if he has anything to do with the Crying Wood? Any bit of information could be greatly helpful." Zander freely answers any followup questions Lord Belkior has and explain any of their doings to the best of his ability, listening intently to anything he says.

Zanderallen and Dorbin pay a visit to Lord Belkior. The duo are shown to a small antechamber, and the paragon enters. Again, his aura is nearly overwhelming, but also markedly peaceful. You cannot help but be at ease around the halfling.
He smiles at the paladin’s remark of following in the footsteps.
“We did some checking since the Sargrass Event,” he admits. “You have acquitted yourselves, and the Shield name, very well. Very well, indeed.”

To the questions around Lord Crimson, the halfling becomes thoughtful.
“‘Crimson? No, that name hasn’t reached me. But, that name is too much of a coincidence, isn’t it? I’ll ask Syr about it.” He grins again. “He’s the sneaky one. I just walk around up here making the bad guys uncomfortable.”

“As for doing something with the Crying Wood, I doubt it. The Wood is an Immortal Power now, and genocidal. My divinations show it’s destroying all non-plants on that plateau, even undead. Unless this Crimson is a tree, or extraordinarily powerful, interacting with the Wood would be a fool’s errand.”

Dorbin is happy with the results of the meeting and heads back to the HQ to study and clean up his notes in preparation for, well, whatever comes next.

Stock (JonM) HP: 72/72; AC: 25/15/21; Per: +12; Surv: +10; SM: +6
Monday November 19th, 2018 10:20:36 AM

Stock finds a free moment and goes for a bit of a stroll. It's been a while since he's had the opportunity to go off by himself and so he does...even though he knows where he will end up. He thinks of recent events and their import on the entire Wold really. He thinks about dealing with godlike entities and the feeling of invulnerability he has at times. And then he remembers being in the belly of a giant beast...dying...sensing his friends dying...and being unable to get out.

Before he knows it, he's marched his way up to the Open Air level again and is looking at a familiar villa. Not much has changed...he can still see the carvings on the door he built. He stands their looking for a moment...or maybe longer...until he realizes that he is attracting looks. He scowls at the bystanders willing to catch his eye and then makes his way back to the HQ.

Dirk Devlin (Joe) HP: 59/59 AC: 20/14/17 CMB: 5 CMD: 17
Monday November 19th, 2018 4:11:39 PM

Dirk relaxes back at HQ with his pipe and a new sketch book. His trusty mapping paper is tucked safely in his pack as he leans against the wall outside. He never was one for staying indoors too much, although that wonderful library almost did it for him.

He has a lot to contemplate and does so in silence.

Zanderallen (Zachary H) HP: 80/80 AC: 24 T: 13 FF: 24 CMD: 22
Monday November 19th, 2018 4:29:15 PM

When Lord Belkior compliments the Silver Shields actions in the Sargrass event Zander bows, trying to cover his blushing and thanks him for his kind words, "We have learned much together. It is good to hear people think we are doing good for the Wold. I am sure you merely standing around would stop most ill doing. I have heard of Alemni's paragons but standing in the presence of one is an experience I will not soon forget. We will continue to search for clues of Lord Crimson, he has crossed our path too many times to be anything other than our enemy. We appreciate any help or insight you or Syr can give. Thank you for your time." Zanderallen finishes the visit cordially with Lord Belkior, chatting and telling their tale as much as he desires to hear it. As they leave his presence Zander feels almost an ache in his heart for that sense of calm. But such calm was not to be for a servant of Domi, and to be honest Zander wouldn't have it any other way. "That is a great man Dorbin. I'm glad he's on the council."

Sid(Andrew) HP: 39/42; AC: 18/15/14; CMB: 2; CMD: 16)  d20+20=39 ; d20+20=27 ; d20+20=29 ;
