The Trial of Caryln Monday November 19th, 2018 7:36:10 PM Rolth thanks Gnym for his hospitality and gift, and Eldorn for his leadership. To the Petals, he suggests that it might be a good time to visit the Catacombs to stock up on gear before our next adventure appears. Speaking of which, "Where should we go next?
Rolthand Elyas will also ask Gnym and others whether by some chance there is someone in town who has the Manfri weaving skill. It seems unlikely, but one never knows! Gymn replies back kindly that he has no idea what the Manfri are. He does agree to send out word to he many contacts to try to find an answer for you.
Kiwina and Tsak talk of spending time on the Rose
Falco grabs two of the healing oils from the pile thinking they will help him keep everyone alive. He nods when Rolth asks about the tapestry, realizing he needs to find a way to smile without lips. "Of course we do need to know what, if anything, it is used for."
{ooc: Detect Magic and Spellcraft 24} (DM OOC: Late night.. Just got off work.. I will have to defer any detecting on the tapestry. All will not be forgotten though.. But you may have to remind me..lol)
Liontaur island settles in after the Sargrass disaster and Carlyn’s antics. There is plenty of time to relax, visit the Catacombs or any of the groups that you may below too. Training is plentiful. Weeks pass without incident. Carlyn is dragged from imprisonment to be humiliated by the taur crowd. After a long moment a judge, a minotaur with a long white wig hushes the crowd. Carlyn spits and curses as the crowd hears the evidence brought forward. After the evidence is completed the judge asks is anyone wants to volunteer to testify. He dismisses many for the Petals. “What of the heroes?”
Kiwina (Steve M) (51/51 HP | AC:15; Touch:11; Flat:13; CMD:18) | HeP: 2 | Status: None Monday November 19th, 2018 8:41:45 PM
Kiwina does not want to participate in the trial, fearing it will become a spectacle of a trial, but understands the need for it. He explains what he knows in simple terms, starting with the tale of the storm and seeing the shooting star that brought the bloodgrass. . .
"We encountered these half-plant taurs during the recent turmoil. I'm sure everyone recalls the storms. We were attacked by and overcame a number of these fellows who were maddened with a bloodgrass sickness. One we managed to cure and befriend. He told us of being transformed and controlled by the witch." Kiwina explains that after the battle they returned to Chessford with this taur, only to learn that his brother had escaped and come to Gnym. His brother confirmed the story of their transformations, and warned Gnym and the Petals that Carlyn had come to Liontaur Isle to pursue her plans. "Gnym asked us to investigate, and so we sailed to Pym where we came upon the town in the midst of a raid being carried out by half-orcs allied to a wight." He describes the evil presence of the undead creature with a tremor in his voice, but remains as factual and calm as he can while recalling the thing and what it did to a child of the village. "After the fight at Pym, we questioned the captured half-orcs and learned that they had been hired by Carlyn, who had also threatened to turn them into plant-creatures if they did not do as she wished." He describes what the half-orcs told the Petals about Carlyn's magical brew that had not worked quite right, and how they reacted to the thought of being fed the stuff. He tells how the party travelled overland from Pym to Carlyn's compound, where they encountered and fought alongside the Ag. "Carlyn had several altered taurs fighting for her, some of whom we were able to persuade to surrender and others of whom seemed to be compelled to fight us. The battle was a difficult one, and Carlyn used magics to blind Rolth and to turn me into a plant. (I got better.) Finally we prevailed. Afterward, we saved those we could. As we returned to Chessford, we found that the taurs who had been under Carlyn's compulsion no longer wanted anything to do with her. They were worried mostly about no longer being welcome back home." Kiwina is unable to say why Carlyn did the things she did, but states what those things were as honestly as his memory allows.
Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (36/36) HP | AC: 14; Status: none Monday November 19th, 2018 9:35:20 PM
Rolth chimes in, "It is as good Kiwina says. Furthermore, in the battle, we captured this map, which shows her nefarious plans to wreak havoc upon this isle." Rolth produces said map with a flourish.

Tsak gives a nod to Kiwina for his excellent account of Petals vs Witch. He feels all important points have been made and sees no need to add anything unless asked directly.

She had plans to harm the free peoples of the Wold and whatever punishment you decide on will be just. Also, the taurs she changed... that is on her head. They are still as taur as any of you despite now looking different. Magic changes the beings of the Wold but it does not change what they were born. Do what you wish with the witch but have compassion for the others."
Elyas (Ben A.) (38/38 HP | AC: 18; Touch:13; Flat: 15; CMD:15) | Light Crossbow +5( 1D8, 19-20) | Status: Tuesday November 20th, 2018 10:40:44 AM "Our companion Kiwina gives a perfect summary of our recent adventures. We bear witness to three specific crimes this woman has done.
First, she has incited violence and raiding on the island, with concrete plans to continue doing so.
Second, she has used magic to permanently alter the physical states of several noble Taurs, twisting them into half-plant creatures. she has threatened to do so to more people if they did not follow her commands
And Third, she used foul mind-controlling magics to enforce her will on those she had already transformed. She used a magical artifact and possibly her own spells to control the free will of others. This is the worst of her crimes, and I urge caution in your dealings with her, lest she find a way to control your mind as well!"
With that, Elyas steps back to let any others speak if they wish

The others each do an excellent job and Finnian, having come down with a bug is not feeling well during the trial. He does his best to sit through the testimonies and only adds, [b]"She was given great power and she used it for her own gain. Any judgment passed against her will be just." [b]
The Trial of Caryln - Part Two Tuesday November 20th, 2018 8:06:50 PM
The crowd gasps when Kiwina and the others explain what happened. “Half-orc mercenaries… that’s preposterous,” roared an older liontaur. “A wight in the Taur islands.. That is a punishable offense. Those creatures are not welcome here,” said another. “Speaking of not welcome. You say these Bramble were all controlled by this witch. I say that is not true. Where is your proof? There is no spell attainable in the Taur Islands that could do that.” demanded a third liontaur followed by a growing crowd of curious onlookers. Responding to Elyas’s statement about Caryln’s possible ability to control minds several of the taurs began to user their children from the crowd. “Could she do that?” Several are heard asking each other.
The judge steps forward to settle the crowd. “We must do this orderly,” he says. Mr. Rolth Niheow you say you have a map of her desired conquest. May I see this map?”
“You are all liars!” Carlyn shouts. “I will have order,” says the judge but Carlyn spits at the ground and continues. The crowd gasps at the lack of respect for their customs but Carlyn doesn’t care. “These heroes,” she again spits. “These creatures disrespected my Prince. My poor cursed love. I saw them destroy him. They should be the ones up here not me!” “Enough,” shouted the judge. Perception vs DC 15 Highlight to display spoiler: { You can hear several other players in the taurnament wonder what they fought and beat at Minotaur Island. “We fought the large hedge outselves. Why does she not hate us? Maybe she doesn’t know.. Be quiet. } “What do you say of these accusations heroes?” The judge asks.
Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (36/36) HP | AC: 14; Status: none d20+9=12 ; Tuesday November 20th, 2018 8:57:43 PM
Rolth proffers the map to the judge upon request. He then continues, in response to the witch's accusations and the judge's question, "Sir judge, I believe that she continues to spin a web of deceit, or perhaps madness, or both. We did indeed defeat a topiary creature, set before us during the Taurnament. However, it was only a recreation of her so-called love, not the real thing. Unless you believe that the Masters of the Taurnament led us to do evil, which I will not countenance even for a moment. Moreover, in the course of the Taurnament, the Eight Petaled Rose was rewarded for its character by the gift of this Green Book. In it, you will find the true story of the Prince of Farungia that she calls her own. In fact, she herself cursed him when he spurned her love for another. Cursed him into the form of a plant creature, doomed to wander the wildlands. She could not have him for her own, so she cursed him. Now here again in these isles, she cannot have what she wants, so she uses her foul magicks to try to force her will on others. That is what I say of these accusations, with Domi as my witness!" With that, Rolth will also show the relevant pages of the book to the judge.

Hearing that some of the onlookers were in the taurnament themselves, Kiwina says, "All teams that competed at Scribner University fought topiary creatures. I don't recall Carlyn being in the labyrinth to witness our fight. Just topiary figures. But I say that destroying a topiary is not showing disrespect for the subject of the artwork, and that had we really destroyed her prince she would be accusing us of murder, and not of disrespect."

Falco locks eyes with the taur who asked for proof of the controling magic.
"For much of my young life I have studied the arcane and there are more powers and variation then there are stars in the sky. To say such magics can not exist.. well you might as well say water cannot be frozen. As to proof, without a physical change there is no way to prove a spell that has long since run its course. Even abilities that let you detect magic become less and less effective with time."
He stares at the witch.
"She had an item of great power and misused it or forgot its limits. Her misuse cause it to destroy itself.:

(Perception=22 Pass, Intimidation=14) Tsak locks eyes with the liontaur that has called into question the witches ability to control the brambles. Who are you to say what is or is not possible with magic? What credentials do you offer? Who are you that calls us liars?

Elyas is too focused on the shouts from the crowd to notice anything more subtle (forgot to add my bonus, but a 12 on perception)
"You claim there is no magic on the island that would allow a person to control the mind of another? How can you say that when an entire School of magic is focused on such things? step on up to the front and allow me to demonstrate such a spell on you! Elyas starts mimicking the motions of casting a spell, but anyone who actually knows much about magic would see through the act pretty easily (bluff roll of 2!). It is obvious Elyas has no clue how to cast a charm spell.
Gothruk Gore (Logan) AC 16 (T13/F13) 29/31HP |Guisarme +7 2D6+6 | Status: None d20+8=25 ; Wednesday November 21st, 2018 10:25:36 AM
Gothruk agrees with the many good points put forward by the group adding two things.
When we were in the final stages of capturing the Witch, there became a time when it was clear they could not win, yet the plantaurs fought on with no sense or self preservation, it seemed extremely weird at the time but Magic would perfectly explain it.
Secondly we saw with our own eyes that she cause mutate taurs, she transformed Kiwina into a plantaur. I think with magic like that, sone kind of compulsion effect wouldn't be difficult.
Finnian (Zeke) (HP:21/27; AC: 16; Touch: 13; Flat: 13; CMD: 17) Status: None; CLW 19/50 d20+11=15 ; Wednesday November 21st, 2018 6:11:36 PM
[perception =15] "The topiary? Is that really what this is about?" Finnian asks himself.
The Trial of Caryln - The final part Wednesday November 21st, 2018 6:45:00 PM Kiwina’s comment recalling Carlyn’s accusation of disrespect over murder caused the crowd to pause and ponder. The judge took in all the accusations and collected the evidence. A scribe, a magiked pen doodling on a long scroll continues to record all the conversations surrounding the trial. The judge excuses himself leaving Carlyn under the watchful eye of a pair of liontaur.
Falco locks eyes with the taur who asked for proof of the controling magic.
The taur returned Falco’s gaze then looked away and began a conversation with a smaller taur beside him.
Tsak locks eyes with the liontaur that has called into question the witches ability to control the brambles while Elyas responds after. Who are you to say what is or is not possible with magic? What credentials do you offer? Who are you that calls us liars? The taur stammered. “She called you a liar, not me.” “I have no magic. I know very little about it. Only what I hear from others. You would think it would be easier to shake yourself from the commands. I hope I never see magic.”
To Gothruk the taur just stood, with surprise on his face. “You mean they fought to the death.. That is awful. Poor.. what are they called, Bramble?”
Suddenly a lady taur burst into tears. “Is this who cursed my child,” she shouted. “He is not welcomed at any school. We are liontaur.. Not liontaur slash centaur. How do I even take care of a centaur child.. Lion..” She sobs and is comforted by others around her. “Kill her..kill her..” the crowd began to chant. “I didn’t change these…” Carlyn tried to speak but was quickly drowned out.. The judge returns with a judgement of imprisonment within the labyrinth buried deep within Minotaur island. The crowd erupted.. Many unhappy about the sentence.. Others more reserved. “Take her away,” said the judge and the guards grabbed Carlyn and dragged her away.
Kiwina (Steve M) (51/51 HP | AC:15; Touch:11; Flat:13; CMD:18) | HeP: 2 | Status: None d20+6=8 ; Wednesday November 21st, 2018 7:42:21 PM
Kiwina watches Carlyn's reaction to the sentence, trying to figure out whether she is upset or relieved by it. (Sense motive = 8) Although he would never argue with the sentence, he worries that the Petals may see her again.
More importantly, though, he realizes that the mixed taur children -- who for some reason he had thought returned to normal after the Sargrass was restored -- are still around. We will have to consider whether championing these children is meant to be our role, he thinks. For the remainder of the trial, he keeps the thought to himself. Later he will raise it with his friends.

Tsak hopes that the labyrinth is able to contain the witch. She has shown no contrition and could easily be underestimated. He also worries about the taur attitude toward the mixed race youngsters. Hopefully the spirit of diversity that the petals embody will show them the strength of having a more open attitude. Lost in his thoughts he follows along with the petals as they make their way from the trial.
Rolth Niheow (BatMark) (36/36) HP | AC: 14; Status: none d20+7=25 ; Wednesday November 21st, 2018 9:30:31 PM
Extending his hands--and showing the Mark of Domi--to the mother lionatur (and loud enough for all others within earshot), Rolth attempts to provide some comfort and hopefully some inspiration, "Cursed you say, but I ask you to think on this. Is it not prophesied that one day the taur races will be reunited in nobility, joining together that which was sundered in ages past? Do we not all worship Tomi in one way or another? Perhaps your child and others who have experienced similar wonders are harbingers of Tomi's gift to all taurs. See, even in the Eight Petaled Rose, we have one of each taur, representing the best that taurdom brings to the Wold. And Tomi showed us favor in the Taurnament! I believe all the way down to my paws that this is true. I hope you will consider what I have said, and further, that you answer your own question with the love in your heart. How should you treat a centaur-liontaur child? Why, the same as any other child! Show love, teach lessons of life and character, be fierce and proud. For we are taur!!!"

Elyas wishes to back up Rolth's words, but feels it would not come over well from an outsider. This issue would have to be resolved by the taur races themselves. He would of course defend the young taurs if people tried to harm them, but forcing them to accept his own morals would not end well

Like Elyas, Falco decides that quite is his best rout as he is not a taur. In his heart he feels that should not matter but knows that it does.
