Sesha breathes a sigh of relief.

Restlin stays cautious and wonders what they should do now.

Tink wonders if they should crack open the robot.

Wyarr stays ready for other encroaching threats.

Agatha seems to like Tink’s idea as she immediately starts taking the thing apart, oohing and aahing over various contraptions. She hrms at something deep inside it and pulls it out.

It looks like a brain, but a heavily modified one. Strange metallic apparatus have replaced portions of it and it has magical runes inscribed on various plates. It’s surrounded by a protective glass dome, though it seems to have cracked in the battle. A gooey residue of some sort of liquid sits on the bottom, the rest having presumably leaked out.

Agatha stares at it with great interest. ”Fascinating. I wonder if he’s still alive in there?”

Megaman walks over to look as well. ”I doubt it, not with the liquid gone. I’ve seen something like this before and the liquid keeps the brain hydrated and feeds it. It’d be like cutting off the blood flow to the brain. Still we should destroy it, no telling what his minions might be able to do with it, maybe even revive him somehow.”

Beri looks at the unnatural thing. While he doesn't have anything against cybernetic implants and magicical ruins themselves, this thing appears to have sacrificed it's body for a mechanical one. Still, the engineering feat that was accomplished here to successfully combine the three is something to behold. The human body has millions of interconnected functions, each one of which would have had to be taken into consideration.

Megaman, now that the Doctor is out, do we need to worry about any other of his minions arriving home to meet us, or will they stop functioning with him unable to give orders? Should we be searching his body for some sort of off switch or control box for his troops?.

Hmm, good point Zane, but I'm not sure that would be an issue. If this is the heart of balance, I would argue that he hasn't been a "person" in a very long time and that it's the "heart" itself that would matter. In any case, it may make sense to take it with us. I get the impression that the Doctor isn't really a threat without his technology, so best case scenario it's exactly what we need, and worst case scenario is likely that we take him to a realm where it won't be a danger to anyone.

Bosk looks at the thing remaining before him. If this is the heart we seek, we cannot destroy it yet. Can anyone divine if it is? We should hold off deterring it, until we determine if it is part of our puzzle. I cannot place it, but it is clearly a construct of sorts.

DM Mitch

Beri wonders about what happens to the doctors minions now that he’s dead.

Restlin realizes the potential significance of the brain.

Sesha immediately follows Restlin’s train of thought.

Garret can’t hear anything over his chainsaw.

Wyarr says maybe they should drop it in a bag of holding and mentions they might need Megaman’s help now that they’ve helped him.

Tink agrees with Beri’s concerns.

Zane urges the group to fully explain to Megaman. He also points out that since the doctor is dead there are no moral problems with using the brain for the ritual

Beri points out that a world without high technology might be the safest place to take the brain.

Bosk says they can’t risk letting it be destroyed.

The party reflects back on Gargul’s instructions. They must perform a ritual to open the prison at the top of Bone Tower. One of his former punishers, Kevintar, is imprisoned there and causing problems. Gargul wishes to free him and thus force a confrontation between him and Marteaus before he can reach full strength and be a great threat to the Wold. In order to do so you must perform a ritual that involves five artifacts and five people performing the ritual.

The ritualists must include:

Two intelligent, free willed undead
Two Intelligent, free willed constructs
One intelligent, free willed undead/construct hybrid.

The artifacts are:

A heart of Evil
A heart of Virtue
A heart of Chaos
A heart of Order
A heart of Balance

You earlier determined that MegaRobotNinjaMan is an undead/construct hybrid and would fulfill the most difficult ritualist requirement. You have made no mention of this to him or asked him for his help until Wyarr mentioned it just now.

The brain, even dead, is remains a powerful artifact that could serve as the heart of balance since it is a perfect blend of magic, technology, and biology. The ritual will destroy the brain, so won’t contradict Megaman’s wish.

Your divinations and investigations led you to this world so it is likely that finding replacements for either Megaman or the brain might prove difficult or impossible. It is unclear if the remaining hearts or constructs could be found here.

Megaman thinks for a few moments. ”It’s hard to tell what his minions might do. They are all programmed to follow his every direction, but they are all very different. Many will likely shut down. Others might go berserk. Still others might just continue to do their final orders until they shut down. Organized resistance or assault is highly unlikely, but we’ll probably spend years trying to clean up everything.”

In response to Wyarr’s remark Megaman looks cautious. ”What, exactly, do you mean?”

Beri attempts to help with the explanation.

Zane does too.

Bosk watches and waits.

Tink also assists.

Megaman considers Wyaar’s explanation, thinks for a long while, and finally says, “I’ll do it. You helped me save my home so it would be remiss of me not to help you save yours. The cyberhawks can deal with the scattered forces of our departed doctor in my absence. The knowledge of magic his empire had died with his brain so even if an underling tries to fill the power vacuum left said underling won’t be able create robots that resist magic or null blades so they won’t have to deal with new robot masters. Hopefully it won’t take long to find the other ritual participants and artifacts needed to perform it and I can return to finish cleaning up what remains here. Do you have any idea where we might find other free willed undead or constructs or where we might procure the 4 other hearts your ritual calls for?”

Garret quietly munches and reflects that he’s not comfortable with taking hearts.

Restlin wonders how many hearts they’ve left behind in the past that might do for the ritual. He also wonders what exactly the specifications for a “Heart of whatever” might be. Could a random nice old guy’s heart do?

Sesha sits quietly.

Wyarr suggests they might come back to help further once their quest is done. He also tries to tally up their current count, though Megaman is the undead/construct hybrid, not just a construct.

Zane wonders if the magic radio might pick up something new in this new world.

Bosk suggests they should search the area for clues and enemies.

Beri points out they still have another trail to follow.

Tink has an interesting, if rather creepy, idea to get some hearts.

Agatha spends the entire conversation looking at the brain in a jar. She seems incredibly fascinated by it. Suddenly she gets up and hands it to Garret seemingly at random. ”I’m going to go find more stuff! I bet the Doctor had all kinds of fascinating relics.” She leaves through the giant hanger doors.

As Garret takes the brain a strange sensation overtakes him. A vague rushing feeling, as if multiple powerful, diametrically opposed forces were contained in the jar, overlaid with a cold harmony that somehow makes them all flow in the same direction.

Anyone who touches the brain with aracana knowledge can instantly realizes this is no run-of-the-mill magic item. If the other hearts are like this they could prove difficult to find - heck it’s amazing the Doctor went down so easily.

From outside the party hears Agatha exclaim in delight and surprise. ”Come look at this!”

Anyone who goes outside sees that she’s exclaiming over a large metal arch sitting in a courtyard. The metal is very unusual and the machine hums softly as Agatha looks over every inch of it. ”I think we just found our way back!”

His heart drops a bit when he inspects the brain. If this was the kind of 'heart' they were expected to use, they had a lot of work ahead of them. Bosk was right; maybe the cult already had a few of these hearts. Or maybe they weren't even aware of how the seal was supposed to be broken.

He goes to see what Agatha's up to before she "claims combat rights to all the good loot" or whatever justification she had to empty the doctor's lab of valuables.

Garret chews in a piece of his relatively hard, stale, but somehow also chewy bread when Restlin asks him for his input. He replies to Restlin, “I honestly don’t like this whole thing. I like it when it’s clear where the evil is and we go destroy it. This whole thing messing with the gods just doesn’t feel right to me. I mean, I’m not quitting or leaving or anything, but something feels off to me about the whole process. Mortals just shouldn’t be involved in the affairs of gods, if you ask me.”

He smiles when Wyarr mentions the chainsaw. “It’s pretty nice, isn’t it? I wonder if it will work when we get back to Hook City.” He pauses a moment, then frowns, “Ah, we’d probably never get enough permits to ever allow me to use something like this back there any how.”

He brightens up when Bosk mentions food. He starts to say, “Oh yes, barbeque! It has been awhile since I’ve…” He looks down at the bread in his hand, then finishes with, “…eaten some barbeque!”

He recoils a little when Tink mentions creating clones just to rip their hearts out. He mumbles to himself, “Messing in the affairs of gods changes people.”

When Agatha hands him the brain, he feels the powers and nods. He describes them to the others and says, “This feels quite indeed in balance, as things should be.”

He carries the dead brain with him as he heads outside to see what Agatha has to say.

I don't think there is much to discuss on this. We can either bring him with us where we can abandon him here with no prospects of getting home other than this gate, which again brings him to the Wold. Also, he may have something to say on this. But logically, it seems our best option is to bring him with us... and if any priests try to complain, well tough. As long as we fill out our paperwork there is nothing they can do in Hook City.

Restlin is suspicious of the the portal.

Garret tries to go on through before it’s on.

Wyarr agrees they should find a way to send Chuck home.

Tink agrees as well.

Beri figures it should be easy to get him home from Hook City.

Zane wonders if practical experience will help the author with his stories.

Tink points out he might be considered crazy

Garret wonders how many forms Auslander would have for them.

Beri feels they can handle any problems that come up along the way.

Evil defeated, heart gathered, ally recruited, the party is all ready to head home when they realize they forgot something.

Also Megaman points out they still need to actually tell the Laserhawks they won.

So they head back and spread the good news. There is much excitement and it looks like they might gear up for a party, though resources are still tight enough that it won’t be particularly extravagant. When Chuck is mentioned they’re told he barely leaves his room and hasn’t been eating as much as he should.

”I’ve seen the like before.” a grizzled veteran says. ”survivors after a raid who’ve lost home and family. If someone can’t pull him out of his shell he’ll just wither away.”

Just dropping him off at home without helping him would be a bad idea."

Where Garret sees paperwork as a bore, it is something that gives Tink something to look forward to on their return. A few hours spent dotting i's and crossing t's. Yep, it will be nice to get back.

She ponders Chuck "Any way we could wipe some of his memory and convince him this was all a dream? Who knows, it might give him a best-seller"

Restlin straight-up does not like Chuck very much, but messing with his head? First Tink suggests cloning themselves for sacrifice, now this? Come on...that's not nice at all.

Without putting it before committee, he walks into Chuck's room (he can cast knock if he has to get the door unlocked), and locks the door behind him. He lets Chuck rant a bit if he wants to then starts talking.

"Look, Chuck. I didn't want to bring you. Looking back, I think I was right. I'm still sore that you sat there and profited off our stories while we risked our lives for the good of our world, but it's pretty cool that I have fans in another dimension...I do have fans, right? People dig me? Yea, that's awesome.

"Anyway, we defeated Dr. Whatshisface and his Robot Masters. We've found a way back to our home. From there, Agatha should be able to get you back to yours. The Wold is a lot safer than this place."
He moves to unlock the door. "So if you're quite done feeling sorry for yourself, we can leave this room and start getting you back to your family. What do you say?"

Diplomacy: 53 - Attempting to improve Chuck's disposition to us.

Wyarr says they need to get him home, maybe with some more story notes.

Zane thinks he might be a little too scary to talk to Chuck.

Tink wonders if they can make this all seem like a dream.

Garret suggests they try to cheer him up with news they’re heading for the wold.

Restlin disapproves of Tink’s recent suggestions and goes on into Chuck’s room. He gives a little speech to try to cheer him up.

Bosk tries to get some liquor for his collection.

Restlin finds that the door isn’t locked, there’s just a “Do not disturb” sign on it. He steps in and gives his speech hoping to inspire Chuck or at least get him to like the Dragon’s better.

He finds Chuck laying in bed, surrounded by alcohol bottles and gently snoring. Dock is sitting in the corner in golem form. He gives a wave as Restlin walks in.Chuck snorts and blinks blearily as Restlin starts talking. Oh heeey itsh the guy. The m-mage-priesth. Your not dead.”

He struggles to sit up for a moment but gives up. ”I shoulda known you’d guys’d win. Your the sparkle dragons, you always save the day. Wha was I worried about? Plus I had ole Dock..hic..here to keep me company. He showed up here one day. Think he got sep.. split from the group after we left my home”

Bosk, in the meantime, is able to easily snag some alcohol what with the party being put together. Most of it is moonshine. The collapse of civilization and population of robots taking over did a number on the booze business. Similarly the food is mostly bland energy bars or military rations. The main course is a soup the cooks made with scavenged veggies and some well cooked deer meat. Despite the blandness of the meal the Laserhawks seem enthused. It seems that the chance to eat as much as they want is rare.

It looks like they’re starting soon. People start to gather in small groups and speculate about all the things they can do now that the Doctor is gone and they don’t have to constantly be hiding or running.

When Garret sees there's food and a party, he heads right in. He quickly notices that the lazerhawks have been low on food and he tempers his appetite to let the others get all they need: he knows about being hungry... He tries to talk to some of the fighters about tactics and strategy for fighting with these strange ranged weapons. He shows off his shiny chainsaw and offers to turn it on...

Over the rings Wyaar suggests that perhaps a Heroe's Feast or whatever spell people cast to make that big pile of food would be appropriate if someone has it ready.

For Chuck, Wyaar asks, "Chuck, you have a choice to make. We want to get you home, if that is where you want to return to, but it may be a trek to get there.. We know that we can get back to the Wold, but are not sure where and how safe our return will be. After that, we can find a way to send you home with as much lore as you would like to fuel your next stories... or you could stay here.. or stay in the wold. It is up to you, but I want you to know the risks."

Beri looks at Chuck and shrugs.
He's drunk, that could work to our advantage. He's been unscathed in all this, we can try to convince him he fell asleep writing and drinking and just had a wild nightmare. At the very least, we should try to get him to the splendors of Hook City, being here is just going to drive him deeper into his depression.

Restlin's eyes light up. The Sparkle Dragons? Why did he not think of that before. He makes a mental note to petition for a name change when they get home.

...which is where they should be going, but first...

Restlin casts a Mage's Magnificent Mansion spell. If these folks wanted a party, then by golly he'd give them one. He does what he can to tweak the spell, exchanging the feast for party foods and alcohol. He's a pretty boss wizard; it's likely he can pull that off, right? He can't do music, though. Hopefully they could take care of that themselves.

He then give the local farmers any seeds in his kit as well as the stingroot tubers to help with growing future crops.

Garret actually restrains himself on food for once, while discussing strategy and tactics and showing off his chainsaw at the party.

Wyaar suggests someone magically create a pile of food over the rings before laying out Chuck’s choices for him.

Beri thinks they caught a break with Chuck being drunk and could potentially convince him it was all just a dream, but wants to get the man to see the wonders of Hook City as their current environs appear to be depressing him.

Restlin eyes light up at the mention of the Sparkle Dragons and makes a note to push for the name change when they get back. He then casts Mage’s Magnificent Mansion tailoring the feast to contain party foods and alcohol as Waard’s luck appears to be smiling on his Mendicant on a Luck Quest even in this foreign land.

Beri offers to help the denizens of the world they are in have a productive year of crops using some plant growth spells.

Zane gets a view from the air, stretching his dragon wings.

Bosk helps with the soup utilizing rations of stingroot stew and his spice kit to make it taste better.

Tink starts to tinker.

Chuck says to Wyaar, “I’ll...hic...take my chances with you lot...my...goo pala...pala...pal. Loosh like it’s os we go to de Wold.”

With the return of Dock (OOC: Honestly keeping track of Chuck, Agatha, Megaman, the cyberhawks and the enemy NPCs, the DMs forgot about it; we will strive to do better in the future; Dock will not become like V’s familiar in classic OOTS where it popped into and out of existence when people remembered V had one) you now have a free willed undead/construct in Mega Cyber Robo Ninja Man and a free willed construct in Dock. You have also found the heart of balance. You need 4 more hearts and 3 more ritual participants: 1 construct and 2 undead.

The party lasts long into the night and the next day Beri is able to cast plant growth spells to aid with crop production. With these things being done and Chuck, Agatha, Dock and Megaman in tow (look at all the friends you have) you gather back at the gate in the courtyard of the former lair. With a little tinkering Agatha is able to get it to hum and the open air in the middle of the arch is replaced with a bone white colored portal (what could that color possibly signify?).

Your mystic portal awaits...

For some reason he cannot explain Bosk gets an odd feeling and says, Watch my back. When we go through the portal, do not let anyone flank m. Instantly his familiars begin moving about and drawing attention to themselves as them move over his skin an armor. The large scorpion on his back is the most obvious, but the other 1...10...20...50..100...1,000...there are at least 1,500 more diminutive forms moving about and then just as suddenly as they appeared they disappear into his fur and out of sight as they merge with his skin looking like a thousand expertly drawn tattoos.

Gripping his sword he says farewell and joins the others through the portal.
