How Do You Solve a Problem Like the Beastfolk?

In the morning, the group splits up and heads out on various errands.

Zanderallen and Bartomus proceed to the Temple of Alemi. As they did once before, Zanderallen asks the nearest acolyte for Paragon Belkior. After hearing Zanderallen’s name, the acolyte nods, and leads the pair to a small side room.

After a short interval, the halfling enters the room, bringing with him a profound sense of peace and health.

“A good morning to you, gentlemen,” he greets them with a smile.
“What brings you up here?”

Everyone else heads for Embassy Row near the palace, and then down a side street, and then up a staircase to a third floor apartment.
At their knock, Tangleweed opens the door. The lizardman beams with surprise.
“Friends!” he cries. “Enter. Welcome!”
As everyone tries to come in, the apartment reveals itself to be a very modest, and now rather crowded, three room affair.

Tangleweed disappears into and then emerges from a small kitchen, carrying a couple bowls of dates and almonds, which he passes around to the everyone. There are chairs for four, and the rest must stand. The lizardman insists on standing.

“For why you come?” he asks, in broken common that is nevertheless much better than it was when the group last saw him.

Bartomus turned and straightened himself as Belkior came in. While he suddenly felt better, his mind was racing and he started talking.

"Well sir, we have a problem, or rather we have discovered a problem in the Float, and we think we should have some help, because while we might have a solution, we think maybe we should talk this out with you to see if it makes sense." Bartomus caught his breath and paused while looking between the halfling and Zander.

Sid says to Tangleweed in Draconic, "Your Common improves! I am very proud of this though it is not my effort to cause the improvement. We come to discuss the very important effort to improve both the lives of the Lizardmen and those called the 'Beastfolk'. I will translate those parts that deep/dense ideas for the discuss/negotiation to take place... sein."

For the rest of the conversation Sid act as translator and does a modest job since the classical/written form is different from the vulgar/spoken form.

Amused at Bart's confusion Zanderallens beams, happy in the presence of the paragon, and touches Barts arm to quiet him. "What my friend is trying to say is a problem going on in the lower levels and we'd like some advice, approval, backing in dealing with it. I'm guessing you know of the beast folk who mostly live down in the Trash level.", Zander takes a few minutes to explain the possible shadow land time travel answering any questions the paragon has to the best of his knowledge. "And whether or not it's all true the humans down there regard it as such and have directed their anger at the losses they suffered during the Sargrass cataclysm at the beast folk. We stopped a fight last night and got to talking to some of the beastfolk. We've come up with the idea of moving them out of the city and settling them in the forest. The rest of the Shields are visiting Tangleweed to get lizardfolk approval. There's about 200 beastfolk so it's not a small undertaking. We were hoping you may have some advice or could possibly give your sanction to the move to try and keep things calm. The last thing we want is a riot breaking out in the streets and a witch hunt for the beast folk." Zanderallen looks at Lord Belkior for an answer.

Micah smiles at their new friend and greets him. "I am glad to see you settled. Are you feeling comfortable in our city yet?"

Micah leads the small talk and then at a break in the conversation, he says "Unfortunately we are not here for a courtesy visit. Last night we learned of a group of ratkin in town that are having a rough go of it recently..." Micah recounts what happened and the predicament that the beastfolk find themselves in. "You see it's a strange thing. Through no fault of their own and because of some strange time travel, they are being made the scapegoats of an event that involved gods...and so now we come to the reason for our visit. We have come to the conclusion that the beastfolk may need to be moved out of the Float. We also have wondered if perhaps they could represent a new ally for your people. The shores of the lake are long and our impression is that your people are limited in number..."

Stock gives Tangleweed a warrior's handshake upon entering and then refuses a chair. He then stands in the back as the more talkative types explain the situation. He nods to Micah's comments and at the end interjects "I will say, while we have a strong feeling that these ratkin are telling the truth, we don't know them too well...so I wouldn't say we can totally vouch for them."

Stohp lets Micah give the opening pitch. Once he's done she adds, "I know it's a lot to ask, especially when your people are establishing themselves as the only source of rare good from the wood. The beastfolk don't have to be competition though; they can provide the extra hands your people need to get established quickly and build up your new trade hub."

Belkior purses his lips in thought as he listens to the problem Zanderallen and Bartomus have brought. He asks a few pointed and well-considered questions, and actually considers the answers.

When the pair have finished, he leans back and ponders for a moment or two.

“As it happens,” the Paragon reveals, “The Council has recently received a petition to deal with the beastfolk, based on more or less the same story you’ve told. Being politicians, they’re all working out how to take advantage of the situation. But, with you here, we might just be able to avoid all that and get the beastfolk help.”

“Any assistance from the Council comes with conditions.”
He smiles.
“But, since we’re not on palace grounds, I can act in my other capacity."
With that, Belkior clears his throat dramatically. An acolyte immediately walks in. Belkior turns to him.

“The Temple of Alemi pledges the financial support required to transport the beastfolk of the Trash Level, and their possessions, to any shore they wish to go.”

The acolyte nods, and leaves. Belkior turns back to the pair, with a grin.
“I love doing that. Drives people up here nuts, 'The Paragon's gone and stuck his nose in places again'.
Regardless, with that pledge comes the Temple’s blessing on the endeavor. Few will be interested in interfering with you now.”

With Sid providing translation, Micah and Stock fill in Tangleweed on the Beastfolk’s predicament.
The concept of time travelling takes quite a while, but eventually the lizardman is on board.

Through Sid, he replies - the essence being the beastfolk will not be allowed to settle on those lands which all have agreed belong to the lizardfolk. Giving a group of people from the Float a colony on lands only recently agreed to would look really bad, even if they are refugees.

However, Tangleweed can offer lizardfolk support in building a new home, as well as a promise of future talks between lizardfolk and beastfolk on trade agreements and the like.
And he agrees with Stohp that if the two groups were close by, relatively, it could be an advantage. While he is not aware of any specific locations, Tangleweed notes the area just south of the current Crying Woods is reputed to be the center of the civilization in the time of the Old Ones, and it is likely one of their old Groves can be found, and used as a starting point for a village.

Dirk starts looking around for his comrades, and eventually learns that they’ve gone to the upper levels. Returning to Shield HQ to grab some items prior to following them, the bard walks into his room, and finds a beastfolk, with standard Trash Level ratlike features, sitting on his bed.

“About time. I’ve been waiting here all morning” the person says in greeting. “Swell, you’re not even one of the originals. Where’s everybody?”

At the sound, Rodrigo comes bursting in behind Dirk, and steps toward the intruder, sword drawn.
"Who are you and what are you doing here!" he demands of the beastfolk.
"And while we're at it, how did you get in here without me seeing you?"

The beastfolk raises his hands. “Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa already. Now, this was my home first, so I got ways in. I just came to chat with Zander and Micah and all. We need some help.”

Dorbin spends the day in the main room. He tried to keep track of everyone's coming and goings, but with Emily Jasmine getting in the way of his book creating, he ends up falling asleep in the chair. He sleeps well and doesn't even hear the commotion upstairs, though the cat opens one eye and looks in that direction.

Bartomus listened and nodded in agreement as Zander explained the situation and the proposal. He was a bit surprised to hear that a petition would already have made it to the council. He rubbed his chin as Belkior talked about the Council's internal mechanizations. He was a bit surprised when the Paragon cleared his through and an acolyte appeared instantly. Obviously, the meetings of the Paragon were such that it made sense that they would be observed.

"Your Grace, this is wonderful news. That gives the beastfolk some protection and hope. That has to be a good start, right Zander, I mean who's going to argue with him and his flock on this one?"

Barely able to contain himself at Belkior's announcement Zander isn't sure whether to hug him or jump up and down in joy. He ends up awkwardly shaking the paragon's hand, "Lord Paragon, you don't know, actually I think you do know how much this will mean to the beastfolk. We will be trying to meet with their elders, one of whom is a friend of ours, soon. Being able to tell them the Temple of Alemni has pledged it's support with bring them great joy. Thank you your Grace." Somewhat recovered and slightly embarrassed at his outbreak Zander waits to go over any details the Belkior or any of his aids wish to discuss and after being dismissed heads back to HQ with a spring in his step. "Bart, you've got quite the brain in there, good idea suggesting we see the Lord Belkior."

Stock holds out his hand to Tangleweed and speaking in a very deliberate manner so as not to be misunderstood, "Thank you for your help. Let us know if you need any further help in the future." Heading back to the HQ, Stock feeling quite self-satisfied thinking about how this little dilemma seems to be coming to a neat ending...

Belkior smiles warmly at Zanderallen’s expression of thanks.
“You just help those people get to wherever they want to go, and we’ll be good,” he responds.

An aide hands Zanderallen a writ, informing whoever reads it that the bearer is entitled to charge any materials to the Temple of Alemi, provided he tells the seller those materials are intended to aid the Beastfolk of the Trash Level with their exodus. There is also a time limit of two weeks, starting tomorrow.

Zanderallen and Bartomus stride happily back to Shield HQ.

Sid, Micah, Stock, and Stohp conclude their visit with Tangleweed. They too, head back for Shield HQ.

They all arrive to find Dorbin asleep on one of the more comfortable chairs, with Emily Jasmine curled up in his lap.
Watching him, and you, are Dirk, Rodrigo, and Jasper, all of whom have just descended the stairs.

The six returnees have apparently interrupted the three, who in turn had just walked in on Dorbin’s nap.

The sudden presence of nine people in the room is too much for Emily Jasmine. She decides she needs to be elsewhere, immediately. The cat springs off of Dorbin’s lap, having first extracted her claws to ensure good traction on the leap. The young wizard is thus awakened by 20 small claws puncturing his thighs, and finds himself surrounded by people.

“Now that we’re all up,” remarks Jasper drolly, “I came looking for help.”

Micah is able to suppress a laugh at Dorbin's rude awakening, but the twinkle in his eye is irrepressible.

His amusement is abruptly interrupted by his recognition of a familiar face. "Jasper! he exclaims as he approaches their former aide. "If you are referring to your people's predicament described to us by Zoule, we are already making progress on that".

"Thanks Zander, really felt it was the right thing to do." As they walked back to their headquarters, Bartomus bought a couple of small lunch pies for him and Zander. He ate his as they walked back to the headquarters. found

He followed in after Zander was chuckling when they found Dorbin asleep being watched by Jasper. When Dorbin's cat went to find a better hiding place, Dorbin's reaction brought a very loud laugh to his lips and out amongst the group. "Fortunately, he's not on guard duty."

"Jaspar, it's good to see you old friend. I heard from Zoule you're now one of your peoples' elders. I hope we weren't jumping the arrow but after talking with Zoule we started putting out some feelers of ways to help, we were about to head out to talk to you with some options. What is your view of the situation." Zanderallen keeps the writ in his pack for the time being, waiting for Jaspar to give his point of view.

Dorbin jumps to his feet in surprise, book-making materials scattering all around the floor. He spots all the people and quickly starts speaking arcane words, casting a spell. Halfway through the spell he looks around and realizes who everyone is. He stops the spell mid-incantation and there is a small "poof" in the air right in front of him. He waves away the cloud of dust and looks around again. He takes a deep breath and mumbles, "Darn cat." He bends down to pick up the pieces of his book.

Stock does not recognize the ratkin with Dirk but recognizes the name as somebody the Shields worked with before he joined. He stands off to the side, listening patiently and carefully studying Jaspar explain his concern.

Stohp greets Jasper warmly. "We heard about the difficulties recently and that you have tentative plans on moving to the forest now that it is safe. If that is what your people decide the Lizardfolk offer no objection as long as you don't move onto their lands. They even suggested a suitable site. The church of Alemi also pledges their support to help your people. Was that what you needed help with or is there something else that brought you?"

Sid wishes Tangleweed well, accidentally saying it in common and then translating his own words into draconic. Laughing it off he heads back with the others. When back he moves to the edge of the room, he remembers Jaspar but not as well as some of the others so he let's them handle the talking.

The more experienced members of the group recognize Jasper immediately.

Zanderallen and Micah both allude to the aid they’ve already sought, but Stohp lays it all out for the beastfolk.

For the first time anyone can remember, Jasper is completely caught off-guard. His mouth hangs open for a moment or two, and then he stammers.
“You got support from the Temple, and the lizardfolk? After rescuing Zoule? All in less than a day? That’s incredible!”

It takes several more moments for Jasper to gather his wits. Once he does, he is able to continue.
“Well, thank you. We all thank you, of course, for getting all this done for us. But, uh, I actually came for help more in line with your usual talents - you know - hacking and slashing and spelling and the like.”

He sits, and continues.

“We met the Witches last night, asking them to divine for us a suitable site. They foresaw a stone building, large enough to house us all. It was old, very old, but still as sound as if just built. The omens promise “safety, security, prosperity, and happiness” once we more in, but also cautions that, let’s see, the exact wording...ah... “the former occupants still walk the halls.”

“So, we were hoping to hire you to clear out this building of whatever former occupants might still be there, offering whatever you find as payment. Though I suppose the Temple’s funds might be useful….or if Stohp is saying the lizardmen know of a different place..hmm...maybe another visit is in order.”

"Wait, a building, ok, that could be of great benefit, but why not settle in a recently vacated building in the woods? I mean we could scout out this other building, but until then, maybe a logging camp, with a few dead giant beetles for decoration, could be the main home for the beastfolk." Bartomus then paused and looked at the other Shields for some idea of what made the most sense in all of this.

Dirk's eyes light up and he nods his head as he thinks about this next adventure. "Clearing out a building, eh? I'm sure we could accommodate that request. What do you all say?" Dirk looks at his companions for affirmation.

"So what are these former occupants? I don't want to reject your witches' omens but I'm not kicking somebody out of their home. But that omen plus the fact it's in the woods suggests the former occupants might not be of the living type anymore. We will definitely take a look. And as Stohp mentioned here is the writ sealed by Paragon Lord Belkior of the Temple of Alemni promising payment for goods and services rendered in aiding the Beastfolk of the Float travel to whatever shore of the woods they see fit. If we let that get out plus our protection hopefully that will keep your people untouchable until we can find you a suitable home." Zanderallen shows the writ to Jaspar and promises to go with him to start setting up arrangements and then leave the writ in his care while they're gone in case he needs to get anything else. "I think I can trust you not to abuse the generosity of Alemni?"

"Wait. Did I miss the bit about this building being in the woods somewhere? You know exactly where we need to go? I mean I can certainly say that this does sound more like a task I'm suited for than what we've been running around with lately."

Unconsciously he stands there limbering up his muscles as Stock listens carefully to the reply with a smile on his face.

Dorbin nods to Stock and grumbles, "Did your handy-dandy witches happen to provide a map? Or are we just looking for any building with occupants?" Clearly he did not get enough sleep during his nap.

Micah smiles as his suspicions that Jaspar's request were more immediate that what they had been working on.

He nods in agreement at both Stock's and Dorbin's follow up.
"Yes, where exactly is this building?" he asks.

As another thought occurs to him, he asks another question, [b]"You say the omens promise safety, security, prosperity, and happiness. Are you certain those benefits would be for you?"

"They said the places former occupants still reside there. As in they're still there but not really occupying it. If I had to guess I'd say we're talking about undead, maybe some leftover plant zombies or something. If they place is still occupied and in use by it's rightful owners I agree we shouldn't kick in the door and clear them out, but I don't think it'll be an issue from how it was phrased."

Jasper makes his pretty non-specific request.
The experienced Shields reply with some more specific questions.

The beastfolk purses his lips.
“Well, I don’t know who the former occupants are. The just what the Witches were chanting. Oh, they did say we could find it by going to the ruins of Old Perimon and following the stream north for seven days.”

Knowledge Local 20 - Highlight to display spoiler: { Old Perimon was a logging town the current Lord Perimon’s father attempted to establish inside the Crying Wood due west of the Float. It didn’t go well. The Wood destroyed the town. It is likely the Library, the Druids, the WLA, and multiple other sources have maps detailing its location. }

“As for whether the prosperity is promised to us... look, the Witches have been very good to us, and we trust them. If they say this is the place to go, well, we’re interested. And the faster we get off the Float the better.”

Jasper looks down at the writ Zanderallen handed him with reverence.
“With this though, well, we can change the plan a bit. We could get ourselves across to Old Perimon, and set up a camp there, and wait for you to investigate like you want.”

"We would need to ensure that you have food, tents, and such," Bartomus said to Jasper. He tried to get a sense of where the ruins might be, but most of his knowledge was the Float or the Plains, everything else just didn't resonate with him.

He turned about and looked at the other Shields. "So you all know where this might be taking us right? What do you think we are going to need?"

"It's due west of the float and was supposed to be a settlement of ran by Old Lord Perimon so there should be maps. I say that Jasper and folks get ready and we go scope it out as soon as we can. We don't want them camping in dangerous terrain while we figure it out, but we can't wait either. We have to move. Micah?"

When the beastfolk mention Old Perimon, Dorbin perks up a bit. He says, "Oh yes, Old Perimon, I know right where that is. I mean, I haven't been there, but I've seen it on more than one map. A sad story, that settlement, but a good plan. It was taken over by the woods, so if there are indeed 'former' occupants, we would certainly be facing some kind of undead. Nasty stuff, that's for sure. There was quite a good number of people there when it was attempted. I'm thinking Old Perimon himself might have been thinking that with enough people they could hold back the Woods. Obviously, they were wrong. I might be able to find our way there from what I've studied, but I know I can grab a map real quick from the library if we'd rather have one of those, too."

"Good info Dorbin, that eases my mind. If you can lead us there we can serve a double purpose, putting souls to rest and clearing a home for our friends. We can start getting things arranged for them leaving. We'll make a visible presence of ourselves and the temple writ. Between everyone knowing the beastfolk have the full backing of the Silver Shields and the Temple of Alemni they should be left alone for a bit."

"I think some of us should go with Jaspar to arrange the move. Some others go with Dorbin to figure out the location of the old settlement. The rest head to the docks and hire a ship to take us there. We rest tonight, gather whatever we need, maybe check the temples for holy water and other undead fighting necessities and head out first thing in the morning. We'll mark a shore landing and Jaspar can follow with his people as soon as they can get ready."

Dirk as always is eager to get going. He takes out his pipe and lights it as he listens to the beastfolk and his fellow adventurers in the room.

”I’ll head to the docks to get us a ride. We know a few of those guys...maybe one is looking for work. I’ll push to leave tomorrow.” Stock looks around to see who may follow and begins heading to the door.

Stohp also wants to go along with Jasper - they hit off pretty well when they first met. She hesitates, wondering if there is somewhere else she could go and be more useful. She decides that she'd better go along with Stock in case a more diplomatic approach is needed to secure the ride.

“But it says the place is seven days north of Old Perimon,” Jasper begins, and then stops himself.
“I see. You want to make sure Old Perimon itself is safe for us to wait when you go check out the building. Makes sense.”

Again the party splits up, and attends to various chores.

Stock, Stohp, Bartomus and Zanderallen go to the docks, and find a Turtle Boat captain looking for a job. They quickly agree on a dawn start the next day.

Dorbin goes to the library. The conjurer’s uncanny memory is on full display, as he locates the map right away. Which gives him plenty of time to dawdle at any of the various displays and documents that peaks their interest.

Micah, and Dirk, and maybe Sid, accompany Jasper on a supply run. The cleric catches up on news from his old friend, most notably that the fellow up and got married.
“Expecting our firstborn in a few months,” he man admits, beaming.

Any concern of Jasper taking advantage of the Temple, or merchants taking advantage of Jasper, are quickly alleviated. He’s still the noble soul Micah remembers, and a lifetime of bargaining on the corners of the Trash Level make him more than a match for most of the merchants one level up.

The day passes, as well as the night.

In the morning, the Shields are on a Turtle Boat, steaming for Old Perimon.

A plan of sorts is in place.
The Shields will secure Old Perimon, with the Beastfolk to follow within the week.
The Turtle Boat will return the next morning, and then The Shields will either mark the site and send word back with the boat while moving on, or return themselves to the Float if circumstances require.

OOC - The group has time to secure any basic necessities. Just post what’s been done the prior day.

On their way back, Bartomus stopped and purchased bullets for his sling. Those were easy, what we also need are rations, something to drink, and with all of the talk of potential dead things, we may need a lot of holy water."

Bartomus walked with the others as they worked their way back up to their headquarters. "What else do we need?"

"Luckily it has only been a month or so since our last camping trip so besides making sure we have enough waterskins and rations we should be good right?" As they stop Sid buys string and bells. Then he also slows them down as he buys groceries. He waits for everyone to meet back up and after they are down finalizing their plans he takes his groceries home to the misses, makes supper, and fills her in on what is happening.

While they are mostly gathered Sid asks, "Do we need to get a gift for Tangleweed for being so thoughtful as to even try to allow to give the Beastfolk some of their land? That would be the polite thing right? And has anyone talked to him about it?"

As they make their way back, Dirk stops and gathers more bolts for his crossbow and purchases some additional tobacco for his pipe. When they arrive back, he spends his time reading and resting.

Some time later, as they are gathered, Dirk turns to Sid. "I am not sure what the customs are in regards to gifts. In our previous adventures together, it appears that they prefer a barter or a gift-for-gift situation. Perhaps there is a resolution somewhere in the middle so we don't offend either side?"

A job well done, Stock thinks as they depart the docks. He thinks ahead to the camping trip ahead and is actually looking forward to spending some time in the woods again.

Undead though...that could be dicey. The thought of creatures that should be dead walking around has always rattled Stock more than, say a giant lizard trying to bite his head off or a hobgoblin's spear.

He heads back into the HQ and goes to the pantry area where the Shields' excess supplies are. He grabs the only remaining holy water and stashes it in his pack.

Dorbin heads off to the library. He meets some of the "less experienced" staff and tries to speak with them about his needs. He ends up really just lecturing them about where the maps should be kept and why, and he talks about the need for maps and how they are drawn up by different types of adventuring groups. Oh, no, he's not one of those types of folks, my no. Yes, he does do a bit of traveling with the Silver Shields, but really he's just a researcher, trying to learn more about the Wold so he can record it in the library and one day teach it to others. He blathers on a bit until he suddenly realizes that he might be late to the docks and he quickly scampers away without so much as a parting word to the staff at the library.

He returns and shows a series of detailed maps showing the places that were discovered long ago including at Old Perimon and the area to the north. He's also researched to see if he can find specific references to specific large buildings a week's travel north of Old Perimon (Knowledge, History: 21; Knowledge, Local, Float: 33).

Having finished off initial arrangements with Jaspar Zander leave the writ in his care. "We'll mark our landing and trail so you can follow us in once you get your people moving. Best of luck to you." Once that's taken care of he heads back to HQ checking his waterskins, lantern, lantern oil, rations, packs, arms and armor before going to bed. He gives a little extra love to his war hammer, in case of skeletons.

Stock catches up a little with Jasper once they all return from their errands. When preparing she makes sure the party has enough supplies for 3 weeks - it's at least a week to their objective and a week back and who knows what could go wrong along the way. Finally she spends 125g on some extra holy water just in case they do fight undead.

When they parted from Jasper, Bartomus went back into his room and looked about. There were partially carved pieces of bone that did need his attention, but his last few patrons were willing to wait for their promised, Pre-Shields, pieces. Then he saw on the back corner of the work the rolled bit of parchment that he had claimed from their adventures. He read the brief note on the outside, Entangle. He nodded to himself and packed it in his kit. It could be of help, he thought, yes it could be of help.

He then went about ensuring that his glave was sharpened, the potions he had were packed, the bullets for the sling were in the pouch tied to his belt, and his armor was at least cleaned. He ensured he had his large pack, to carry supplies and rations. He turned himself in and in the morning would rise to his meditations. He would look forward to another turtle ride, and exploring yet again.
