The Trial of Caryln - The final part Friday November 23rd, 2018 8:41:48 AM Rolth’s oratory skills are superb. His audience was attentive and applauded at the conclusion of his speech. Some of the other Petals watch silently. Elyas and Falco, being non-taur decide against speaking up. Kiwina wonders about Carlyn but cannot pick up anything odd. He and Tsak consider a role for the Petals as champions of the mixed taur children.
Gothruk praises Rolth then speaks to the woman with the child, “Perhaps you could find a centaur who is in a similar situation, help her understand the liontaur part of their son as they give tips on how to look after the centaur side. Even if you can't find another with a mixed child I'm sure a centaur may step forward to help.” The woman sobs but manages to say thank you to Gothruk.
--- The trial wraps up with a formal structure and speech about equality between taurs from the Sergeant at arms. Carlyn is taken away and not seen or spoken of. Conversations about her are avoided, even by the most affected. For several days Chessford have an uncomfortable air floating around. The past issues attempting to resolve themselves silently. After a month of uncomfortable silence Chessford begins to return to normal. Taurs begin to speak freely, avoiding talk about Carlyn but not silent. Upon hearing the talk, Kiwina has no particular interest in the festival -- MartiGrau is not something he is familiar with. He also does not want to avoid it, and assumes that Rolth (at least) will be interested. He is very much serious about putting the Rose through her paces. Because of it's distance from everything but the Shipwreck Shoals, Chessford is not the best home port from which to do this. However, with the promise of a festival if they stay in the area, the party can make do with the location.
Kiwina spends several days at the WLA chapterhouse learning what he can about Liontaur Island to pick the best secluded locations in which the party can bring the Rose into gradually shallower waters and see if she will essentially "float" onto the shore. (Geography = 22 (including +2 for water as favored terrain))
Aside from planning short sailing trips, Kiwina spends most of his time talking to the other Petals about what they should do and where they should go next. In his opinion, the group may want to go to Bridge Island and talk to some of the more learned folk at Hearthold Keep about the mixed race taurs. It would be another chance to become more familiar with the Rose. However, the trip would occupy most of the month before MartiGrau.

A large fountain is installed and instantly covered to hide it from the curious. Information about the festival is plentiful as everyone seems to have a story about the 3 day celebration. A majority of the population seem to use the festival to become intoxicated and blow off steam. A large contingent of outsiders show up in the port city and quickly assigned jobs as guards or protectors of the peace (POP). Other outsiders begin to appear but seem to be more interested in the festival and tourism.

We have a ship for a home. Why would anyone sleep anywhere else? Hearing Rolth's change of heart about Bridge Island, Kiwina considers what it would take to stock the trip for a long voyage. At roughly 4 gp per day for rations for the eight of them (including Ramsey), a month trip will cost a bit. Cheaper food might be an option if someone has the ability to eliminate any spoilage.

Tsak thinks it might be a good idea to bring some of the dignitaries from the other Isles to Bridge Isle so that they can see diverse taurs all living and working in harmony. He makes a note to discuss it with the other petals over dinner. He also tries to spy any 'mixed' taur young un's.

How it got to the islands I don’t know. I’m not really into all that magic stuff. Magic is the only way this trash heap could of gotten anywhere. You know, I could really tell that captain something.. Wait till I see him!” The minotaur then stomped off the opposite direction.

After talk of holes in the ship, Kiwina has a bad feeling about this. The Petals have spent time on one magic ship that could easily have been bonded to a person. "Was your captain Cecil?"
Rolth takes a look around, but there are too many places to see things--the minotaur stomping off, the surly ones down the beach, the wreckage, the drunk--and he can't quite take it all in. He intrigued by Kiwina's insightful question, and looks more closely at our drunk companion. Is this someone we met while sailing on the Herald?

He wanders whether the giant black ship had anything to do with the wreck or is it just coincidence that pieces of it are lying against her hull. He too hones in on Kiwina's query. If Captain Cecil is missing then the Petals will certainly involve themselves in making sure he is okay (though some of the team might not miss their rough rides aboard the holey terror that was his ship).

The drunkard’s eyes are open wide. “You know the captain? Oh thank the gods. I told them.. The Bosun, the same guy that met you on your first trip, greets you warmly. “Friends, I’m so sorry for doubting you would assist us. I believed you had more important things to do. The fact that your on Bridge island is no coincidence I imagine. "Enough time has already passed due to you lot sitting around getting drunk. A whole month goes by before you start a proper search! it is going to be quite a challenge to find anything now. Outside the bar is a large pile of trash, collected from today’s long day. Perception vs DC 14 Highlight to display spoiler: {You find a partial octopus tentacle.} Bagdi responds, a bit annoyed and his voice elevated. Aaroth, is not any demon. Well… no.. jeez.. I don’t know.. I’ve not met the creature. I’ve only heard stories. Aaroth acquired the Herald from a group of pirates headed by a captain named White Beard. Captain White Beard, it is said, was killed in the battle and the Herald sank. Aaorth, very angry, found a powerful summoner named Brydus to resurrect the ship. It is said that Brydus cursed the captain of the ship.. Whoever is the captain. The captain must stay within 200 feet of the bow of the ship. Where to find him? I don’t know, he’s supposed to be some gambler, maybe try talking to the Purple Duke. That’s all I know gentlemen. Now may I drink and be merry inside?”
Kiwina ponders for a moment, then asks, "So what kind of man do you think Cecil is now -- the one we knew, or the pirate?" Bagdi turns.. “Captain is a little bit of both when times call for it but lately he has been focused on being a captain of a swiss cheese ship.”
Tsak struggles with conflicting emotions: relief at finding the petals... and dismay that they are leaving an alehouse that he just got to. As the rest head outside he flirts with the thought of ordering an ale 'to go' but decides to head back outside with the party. Besides, who was that big hairy thing that Rolth was pestering and Kiwina was glowering at?

I have been on a boat, fighting and transformed. A good mean might be just the thing and it might get us closer to the captain.

Tsak too is up for refreshment, and still a bit winded from the walk. He simply stands mute, nodding furiously at Falco's suggestion.
Who is kept in Hearthold Keep Part 3 Wednesday December 19th, 2018 8:58:47 PM
The tall elf bowed politely and sits the party at a table comfortable for everyone. He asks if they would like to order any food - (OOC: all food outside of Specials- cost 25 gp - Feel free to RP any food you like) “Specials are Upper Kings channel Crab legs and Bridge Island Lobster both are available for 75 gp.” He acknowledged the parties request to see the masters of the place and leaves after taking any orders. Outside of your table you notice the large room is full. Each table has a mixture of taurs and others. Creatures you wouldn’t normally see seem to enjoy dinner at the Hearthold Keep. To the right is a huge monster with a large black nodule in the center of a blob that may be a head. A pair of eyes on each side of the nodule. The monster is surrounded by a pair of minotaur and a outsized human. To the left is a reptilian creature that tastes the air with its long split tongue. Surrounding this creature is a pair of younger reptilian creatures and a snake-like creature sitting on its thick tail.
Within moments he returns with a pair of monks dressed in brown cloaks. “Welcome, to Hearthold Keep restaurant and monastery. I understand you have concerns about the children on Liontaur Island?” said one monk. “We may look like resaurantiers but we are still monks and have ears everywhere and answers for everything. Would you like a breadstick?” said the other monk while offering the group a basket of bread.

Elyas tries to hide a reaction at the high prices of the food. He gratefully takes the breadsticks, but waits for the others to present their case after his earlier failure

Rolth orders a nice, juicy center cut steak, rare please! His mouth waters after eating sailing rations on the trip over. When the monks approach, he greets them politely and accepts the breadstick.
"Why yes, thank you! We are the Eight Petaled Rose. Two of us, the centaur Kiwina and myself, left this very island not so long ago to begin a quest, bless Domi, to reunite the taurs in nobility, inspired by the example set here on Bridge Island. We had a minotaur companion who has since parted ways, but we have an equally redoubtable minotaur friend, Gothruk, who you may perceive is a monk himself. IN any event, during the recent troubles, there appeared among the families of Liontaur Isle many children who were half one type of taur and half another. Can you, in your wisdom, explain this? We hope it is a sign from Domi that we are taking steps in the right direction on our quest. Yet we are not certain what to do next, nor whether we are merely allowing ourselves to be blinded by our hopes. Can you help us understand what is going on? Are there other signs that might show the way?"

Tsak orders steak. A great big juicy steak cooked rare with a peppercorn sauce and roasted potatoes and a mug of the abbotrs lager. Thank you.

Kiwina cannot believe a meal would be worth so much, and examines the patrons of the place. He cannot tell if a huge monster with a large black nodule in the center of a blob that may be a head is male or female.
"The major part of my worry, frankly, is that the mothers of the children are afraid of their neighbors. They hide the children. Growing up in fear -- well, it doesn't seem to me to be the best way to help the children become the hope of peace for taur-kind. I believe their parents need support and encouragement, but don't know how travelers like us could provide it."
Kiwina has not ordered nor accepted food. He worries the monks might take this amiss (sense motive = 20 to see if they're offended).

As the others talk Falco has second thoughts on his order but lets it go anyway as it leaves him with almost 300 gold, more they most make in a lifetime.

Elyas takes a moment to look around the room
So many different races and types represented n this room. How do you do it? How do you get such varied peoples to sit in the same room without fighting or glaring at each other? This is what we would hope for the Taur peoples and their new hybrid offspring. We don't know why it is happening, but really the why is less important than finding a way for the collective to accept the unique.

The price of the food is a bit high but the food is exquisite. Juicey, tender and delicious. “You are residents of the island. That is wonderful. We just started this operation here so you were probably a bit surprised,” said one of the monks. “I’m sorry you lost a friend, that’s always troublesome. If you need anything please let us know.” “The children, I’ve heard of these children. The twisted mutation is not possible. At least, I have not ever came across anything like this. What about you Luther?” Luther looked up and then met eyes with the first monk. “Elbridge, this is a tough one so these children have the been twisted up nasty. This is a very powerful spell, I’ve only seen spells like this used after major events. It’s like some spellcasters just wait for the cover of a disaster… anyways.” Kiwina does not notice any offense taken by the pair. They seem occupied and truly interested in what’s happened to the taur children. “The children, will need a powerful potion. Well, I’m not sure you can call it a potion. It’s an airborne concoction. You will have to disperse it over the children at the same time. I have ingredients for one potion.” “The ingredients,” Elbridge picked up the conversation. “Are very rare and expensive. You will have to give us some time. Are you heading somewhere? Maybe you could stop back in after some time.”
Falco "Well those sound wonderful, if a bit expensive. I guess it might be a once in a lifetime meal so I will take the Bridge Island Lobster please. A glass of water would be good as well." “The Bridge Island Lobster is a good choice,” Luther says with a smile. Finnian takes in the tall elf and decides that he's all of a sudden not very hungry and turns down the offering of food.

To [Elyas[/b], “It’s amazing what a little food will do. Here as the Keep we have all the food a creature could ask for. Why not feed everyone. “What about your minotaur friend?” Elbridge asks referencing Gothruk. “Food solves everything. Elbridge then instructs the tall waiter to bring out the complementary soup for the ones that do not want a meal.

The response from the monks takes Kiwina aback for a moment. "What does this potion you recommend do?"
It sounds to Kiwina as if the monkx might be talking about "untwisting" the children, which is not at all what he expected to hear. But most likely he's jumping to conclusions.

Rolth is also taken aback at the idea of undoing the children's blended forms. "Why do you think the children's condition is something that needs to be undone? How do you know that it is not the work of Domi, doing exactly what Bridge Isle has been preaching for years? Is this the work of some other being?"

Falco is content with the food and the discussion of a potion. He sits back, anticapating the feast that seems to be coming.
This is a nice break from the troubles of the Wold. I have to remember to come here when there is down time.
