A Portal Appears (DM Warren)

(I'm going to move this along, but you have time to make your purchases still)

For safety, the Agents move out a bit into the countryside, since they still don't have much more than theories about this portal. They go past the inn at the crossroads and into an open field before pulling out the scroll and reading the runes. As before, the previously blank interior is overlaid with an map that seems to be showing them relatively flat terrain and an incantation to activate the portal scroll.

When read, the increasingly familiar swirl appears on the ground in front of them, beckoning them to just step into it.

Whelp...I'm the scout so I'll go first.

Michael draws his blades, takes a deep breath then pauses...he takes a rope out of his haver sack and ties it around his waist...giving Sigvar the other end he then jumps into the portal. but not before admonishing the rest of the crew to follow close behind.

Michael looks around the new area, test the wind, notes the sun positon, and just generally looks around carefully. When Sigvar comes through holding the rope and looking consternated, Michael chuckles and explains. I figure with as much as stuff has been trying to eat me of late...you could...you know..fish if something got me. .

Sorry all - long field day.

Michael jumps in the portal, giving someone a rope to hold in case he needed back through. It didn't seem to matter much as everyone else came through soon after.

The Agents find themselves in a small clearing surrounded by huge jungle trees and the sounds of jungle type animals all around. (Perception checks everyone)

At first, the clearing seems empty. But something just seems off to Pru. Maybe she's just gotten used to seeing giants around, because she swears that she can see a giant just barely failing at blending into the trees.

As the other Agents begin filing into the clearing, she also catches the tail end of one moving quickly off to the north.

That's curious Michael thinks to himself. then another thought occurs to him. What if the giants aren't running away, but instead are running for help.

Hey guys, we might want to prepare for an attack pretty soon. that last one looked us over pretty good before running off, probably to make a good report to his chief when he rounds up the troops to come stomp us. someone with good tracking should probably see if this is a crossroads or trail or something for these giants. I would also suggest we displace forward and prepare a hasty ambush while we have time.

If they can find their probably approach vector Michael will lay caltrops and tanglefoot (rope 18 inches high strung between two trees to tangle the feet of running infantry.not a tanglefoot bag. ) he will also climb a tree next to the trail so that he can leap down upon a passing giant thus gaining the element of surprise.

Sigvar watches the giant run off. He thinks Micahel is right, it is going for help. But what kind of help? Are they going to mount an attack against the Agents or were the Agents sent here to do what they do, which is get a contract to make their pay?

well, if they don't' attack, they will approach openly and we can lead them around the kill box, if they charge in to kill us, you'll be happy we put it together. as for how long. well... with the giants running off, I figure they will be here within the hour...maybe two at the most. depends on how far the had to run back.

The Agents wait around the clearing with bated breath, but other than the normal sounds they would expect from the jungle, there is nothing to notice. It doesn't seem like the giants are coming back this direction, or if they are, they're taking their time about it.

What they can tell is that the giants went off in the direction that was indicated on the map scroll that created the portal. It would appear that they've been dropped in on one side of it, and the vague path through the jungle leads off towards some ruined buildings, though they are quite a ways off, if the scale can be considered correct.

Hrumph...looks like running away it was, that or they have buttoned up in anticipation of us assaulting them. That sucks, Assaulting a fixed position is a lot harder than an ambush.

Michael takes up his caltrops and the tanglefoot, it wouldn't do to leave that stuff laying around where a non-combatant could get hurt.

once his stuff is packed up he begins breaking trail towards the ruined buildings. Not directly though, he circles around to the left of the buildings, it's a minor thing, but taking the expected way in has been the death of many a soldier so it could pay dividends to come in along an unexpected route.

Nikolai helps Michael make the decision to stop his trap making and wait for another time.
"Running away or going for help, either way, we don't want to wait around here and see what happens. I'd rather use our traps and stuff when we camp, that way we choose our defensive positions and set traps to best advantage."

He then makes note of the tracks the giant left before heading off to the ruins. He notes size and shape of foot and if barefoot or footgear was worn.

Pompous stays in diagonal line with Anna but 50' to her right, in possible flanking maneuver. He takes notes of where large trees are on his flanks to he can use them as cover as needed. While his tracking abilities may be better up front, his bow makes a read guard maneuver smarter in his opinion.
He keeps a vigilant eye out for signs of trouble.

Sigvar plods along at the steady, unchanging 20' per round hat he always moves. Stealth is completely out of the question for him so he ignores it and tries to keep his eyes open for odd stuff and traps.

It's a good thing there are keen eyes out to see things coming, because Sigvar is going to be heard a ways off, no matter what he does.

Michael breaks trail off in a large arc, but it will be quite a while before he sees any building. Nikolai searches around for a trail, but odd as it seems, he can find no trace of footprints. Considering how quickly the 2 they saw ran off, there must be some sort of magic at work.

Eventually, they move around the flanks of another clearing in which they detect some movement. They give Sigvar the motion to stop for a moment while they assess this new presence.

Whatever they are, Anna can see that despite looking like oversized apes, these two 12 foot tall creatures are not native to the Prime Material Plane.

"Pass the word on that we wipe these out once we've learned as much as we can about them and how many there are and what they might be doing here."

Nikolai goes into stealth mode and tries to get close enough to see them better and hear any conversation, making use of as much vegetation for cover he can.

Michael is rightly concerned about these creatures, of which there are 2, and quickly downs the contents of several vials.

Sigvar knows nothing of them, but between Trayvin and Anna, there's several details about them to go around. And this time, there won't be any worries about morals, since they are as evil as they come.

Pompous and Pru make themselves ready. Pru thinks she could turn them into rabbits. One at a time. And if she can get past their natural spell resistance. And their natural fortitude.

Nikolai sneaks close enough to hear them chatter back and forth to one another in an evil sounding tongue.

Apparently the Agents weren't the only ones preparing for battle. They must not have been quiet enough in their discussions or their sneaking around, because a pair of deep gravelly voices call out.

Come out and play, meat. Surrender and we'll make it painless.

Michael sees Sigvar step out to battle the big 4 armed monkey, but he also sees that flanking the creature will in turn flank him to the demons. Oh well, maybe he can get the big minotaur to echelon right and left face so he can get into it's flank. Michael Charges the big monkey at the same time yelling Sigvar, Echelon right and left face, get me a flank.

if Sigvar goe for it,

base attack 18 +1 for prayer +4 for AotF flanking. +2 charge. = +25 to hit.

roll 19 +21(if no flank)= 40 if flanked 19+25= 44 (crit! either way roll 18+21=39 or 18+25=43 confirmed!)

Rapier +1 Keen
To Hit AC 37 or44 crit confirmed for 6 and 4 damage and possibly 24 points of flanking damage + 6 bleed starting it's round.

*Charge gives a +2 to hit bonus at the cost of a -2 to AC till next round.

Hope that makes sense and I hope Sigvar takes that 5' step.

Within minutes, the Girallon Anna ID'd is almost down for the count, though only Michael's quick reflexes save him from a claw to the face as he heedlessly rushes in for his attack. missed his AoO

Meanwhile, Anna shifts, Pru buffs, and Pompous tries to sneak around the clearing for a better shot.

The Girallon, while not very accurate, has plenty of attacks to go around, and one of them eventually gets through on Nikolai. 5 damage

Trayvin casts his spell, but needs to see if it penetrates their resistance (please roll for SR)

Meanwhile, one of the demons blips out of sight, reappearing in the jungle where Pompous thought he was being sneaky! Where do you think you're going, little man?? The demon reaches out with one huge claw, scoring a critical strike and grappling Pompous in one enormous arm. 27 damage and you are grappled

The other, not liking the holy energies raining from the sky, counters with his own spell. He seems not to care that he kills off the Girallon with the spell, since he can hit every Agent but Pompous if he does. A greasy black miasma spreads around the Agents, trying to hurt and sicken them.

the world speeds up and just about the time it does the big monkey falls. he begins to turn and catches the demon porting away, leaving the one demon alone. He locks eyes with it, fighting off the disgusting miasma it exudes by force of will. he smiles.

Chauncy! it's been ages old chap, how in the world are you? he moves quickly to the side of the demon, hoping that Nikolai will engage the other flank, he keeps just outside it's reach until his Thumb gets into position.

Pru powers through the Baregara's SR, but it's a sturdy beast, and only takes reduced damage.

Michael repositions. Travyin, having trouble overcoming the SR, instead buffs himself and moves to supporting combat range.

Despite the sick feeling, Nikolai pops up into range and delivers a solid kick to the kidneys, though he narrowly avoids a claw to the midsection in the process. The creature is quite surprised and is momentarily stunned.

Anna also gets down with the sickness, but channels it into her breath and tries to petrify the demi-demon. Unfortunately, it just barely avoids getting stoned.

Sigvar moves the other direction, addressing the threat to Pompous and striking a mighty blow.

While Red is recovering, Black's rains mouth senses a tasty meal within reach and begins taking chunks out of Pompous.

Then, Black begins pummeling the minotaur that smote him. But not before first attempting a paralyzing move of its own.

The creatures are tough, so Pru decides to go with what she knows: fire.

Using her innate sorcerer abilities, she lobs an Elemental Blast at Red. Red takes 28 points of fire damage, Reflex save DC 23 for half. If he fails his save, he gains vulnerability to fire until the end of Pru's next turn. That's if a 21 is good enough to overcome SR, which I think it isn't.

Pru follows it up with a Quickened Scorching Ray. Three rays shoot toward Red. [Caster level check is 33 this time, so I'm hopeful. Rays hit Touch AC 15 for 10 damage, Touch AC 24 for 18 damage, Touch AC 25 for 11 damage. Pru has the Precise Shot feat.]

Sigvar's first hit doesn't quite finish it off, but the next 3 strikes do the trick. The creature collapses, and Pompous rolls out of its grip, thankful not to be getting munched on anymore.

The other one is near surrounded now, and is bleeding like a stuck pig from Michael's attacks. Trayvin and Nikolai don't seem to be doing enough damage to get through its natural toughness though, and Pru can tell that her blast just splashed away and her fire didn't scorch it as much as it normally would.

Still though, it begins looking worried once its companion falls and a flurry of arrows bristle out of its hide.

You'll pay for this! it screams before popping out of the clearing and out of sight.

All that's found on the body of the slain creature is a set of manacles. On closer investigation, they appear to be a set of dimensional shackles.

The Agents are still ready to go, this fight having been barely enough to work up a proper sweat. On they get go into the jungle.

Heh..heh...just a little joke, me and some other recruits back in basic did some magic mushrooms during leave one time. Jones kept insisting that we all had a third eye that was closed so that we could not see higher dimensions...the mushrooms opened that eye. so the third eye exists in a higher dimension...so the shackles could bind it...even though it's an eye...okay...that joke sucked.

" So what is our plan when we catch up to the giants that we are following?"
Sigvar bends down and takes the dead demon by the head and uses his sword to remove it. He wraps it in some canvas from his pack and follows along. The trophy will either aid them or condemn them, based on the demon's relationship with the giants. He isn't sure which.
He rests his holy sword on his shoulder as he marches. Quickly ony it's enchantment and his enhanced charisma remain as his combat buffs fade.

The Dimensional Shackles draw discussion. Were they meant to hold the demons? Were they meant to hold the party? Were they meant to bring jokes about third eye magic? All possibilities.

Sigvar does ask an interesting question: are you on your natural plane still? Pru and Trayvin are quite confident that you are, which also supports Anna's feel about things.

Nikolai is ready to take the lead and Pru ready to take up the middle of the pack.

What order do the party usually travel? Will you be moving at normal pace or slow and stealthy? Each would have its pros and cons.

didn't the demons say something about the Giants being incompetent or unwilling to fight? could be that they are being dominated by the demons and are using the "slaves pace" philosophy to get out of as much work as possible, they could also be doing it to avoid moral destruction as well. we will have to see though. laziness and incompetence are hallmarks of evil too.

Pru and Trayvin think about the planes and what they have learned of them. They realize that portals can indeed form between planes and transport people from one to another. They also talk about many of the planes they have read about, and none seem to be quite the same as the Wold. Most instead are described by their contents: air, water, darkness, etc. So as best as the two can tell, this should still be the Wold, but they can’t be completely sure.

As Nikolai leads the way to the path, Sigvar pauses a moment to pick up a rather gruesome trophy. He takes a deep breath before moving, realizing that little time has passed since the battle with the beasts, but more time has passed since they moved through the portal. Looking up, he can see little through the canopy of the jungle, so he really cannot tell where the sun might be in the sky. It’s still apparently daytime because he can see a little of jungle around him, but after passing through the portal, he can’t be sure if it’s early morning or late in the afternoon wherever they are.

Nikolai calls back to the others to stay back a little as he takes the stealthy approach in the front of the group. As he moves down the path, water drips on him from above. He is starting to notice the heat in the jungle as well as the humidity. Plants are dipping all around and the noise from the swishing of plants and the dripping of water make listening for anything nearly impossible. He jumps at as sound, but realizes it was just a puddle of water rushing off a leaf that turned.

The path here appears wide and well-traveled. The minotaurs have no trouble walking along the hard-packed ground, though it is quite wet in many places. The jungle seems to have been beaten back to keep the trail clear: both in width and to a height of at least ten feet. The trail twists and winds through the thick and heavy jungle and in moments, everyone is sweating profusely in the heat.

OOC:
All characters need to make a fortitude save DC 15 because of the heat. Anyone who fails takes 2 nonlethal damage. Heavy clothes or armor gives you a -4 on that save attempt. If you roll a successful survival check (DC 15) you can add 2 to the save. For each point that you exceed the 15 on survival, you can grant the +2 to another character. If you fail the fortitude save, you gain the fatigued condition.

Any other actions, preparations, order, transformations, or anything else as you wander through the quite hot jungle?

Nikolai, Michael, Pompous and possibly Anna take turns as the scout.

when not scouting they take a position at the back to form the rear guard.

in the middle Pru, Trayvin, Sigvar and the scout not currently scouting or rear guard. Sigvar and the third scout are the reserves, if things go pear shaped they can run in and lay waste to the subject of our ire. Trayvin does double duty as part of the reserve and Healer. while Pru is the heavy artillery.
Positioning like this allows us to react to threats quickly and at the same time screen our casters, the constant rotation of scouts and rear guard changes our order of battle fairly often, thus offering a chance at obscuring our formation from prying eyes.this also gives the scouts some rest.


to determine for purposes of an encounter who is in each of the three rotating positions Take a d6 and assign the numbers to Michael, Nikolai, and Anna then roll. 1st roll scout, 2nd roll swing, rear guard. obviously, reroll numbers that have been used,

While doing all this Michael does not stop moving. when he's not scouting he's looking out for the others giving them water, showing them how to keep cool and generally doing what he can, he does not realize that in looking out for others he forgot to look after himself. he notices he is drenched in sweat and his skin is clammy, he also feels sick to his stomach and a bit dizzy. guys, I think I overdid it. I on't feel so good. .

during his time at the front though...his eagle eyes see all, he hears like a bat, and smells like a dog, after all it's hot in the jungle and he is wearing chainmail and leather.

The Agents continue through the jungle. The heat starts to take its toll, but Sigvar casts a spell to help out. Pompous really doesn’t notice the heat, but Michael runs around trying to take care of everyone and explain how to beat the heat. All his effort really taxes him, and he starts to slow down until Pru realizes how the heat is affecting everyone. She takes care of everyone with a simple spell and Michael immediately feels better. The heat is still there and is still oppressive. Everyone is sweating quite a bit, but at least the heat isn’t slowing anyone down any more.

The wide trail winds through the thick jungle and the dripping continues endlessly. The day drones on and you wonder if the heat will ever give up. The humidity is near 100% and everything you own is soaking from either your own sweat or the humid air. Even breathing is labored a bit, despite the magical help. You can’t even imagine what this place will feel like if and when you exert yourself in combat.

As everyone is getting used to the boredom and trudging along, Nikolai suddenly holds up a hand from the front of the group and stops everyone. Pru almost bumps into Pompous, the stop is so sudden. Without saying a word, Nikolai gestures for silence. The group listens and after a few moments of nothing but water dripping, you can finally make out a new sound: it is a steady tapping of some kind. It doesn’t appear completely natural, as the tapping stops on occasion, then starts back up. The trail continues along in the direction you were headed, but you can see it winds to the left a hundred yards or so away. The sound appears to be coming directly from your left now. The jungle here is very thick and nearly impassable, but someone might be able to cram themselves through the jungle if they really wanted to, and if they had a very sharp knife, perhaps…

When he hears the sound Michael motions to the others gives them the sign to wait, that he is going to scout and then slithers beneath the brush to cut across the trail toward the sound of tapping.

brush presents a wall, to get through it you either have to cut it back or get under it down where the trunks and roots are. Michael is conscientious and takes care not to crack any sticks or rustle leaves as he moves. he twists around the close-packed trunks and squeezes along game trails. he tries to get close to where the tapping is coming from, but he stays hidden and observes. once he has the measure of the situation he slithers back.

To him, the sound is civilization. It is either a smith or carpenter, hammering at their work. it is also clear to him that he will be following the path to the village. The thought of trying to carve a Minotaur sized hole through that vegetation seems ridiculous.

Nikolai, in his monk outfit, sweats but beats the heat. Soon he gets used to the 'normal' jungle sounds and that pays off later. The path is clearly meant for giant types so when hearing the abnormal tapping over the drip-drip of the jungle, he motions to stop and points in the direction of the tapping.

He doesn't try to follow Michael, trusting in his small size to get him through the dense undergrowth. He'd have to hack through and that wouldn't be prudent.

"Anna, if you want, a small jungle bird following Michael might be a good idea," he grins.

Michael carefully works his way into the jungle while the others wait, sweating, on the path. Anna looks around to try and spot a bird, but the jungle is just leaves, green, and water from what she can see. She suspects the birds may generally stay higher in the trees where they might have more access to open air. Regardless, she turns into a small bird, flapping in the hot jungle.

Michael twists and turns as he moves into the jungle. He has to crawl along the ground in places, and he is quickly covered in thick, black, wet dirt. He works to get through the thick brush, but he manages to make some progress. He is a little sore as he turns and contorts his body, but he makes some progress. He is lost from sight of the rest of the part almost immediately.

Fortunately, the humidity and water make enough noise that Michael doesn’t need to remain perfectly quiet. He pushes and shoves different branches and roots out of the way as he moves. He can tell that he’s making trees and leaves move, but in this jungle, nothing seems to be unmoving. Quite suddenly he reaches the edge of the jungle he has been fighting. He stops and moves a large leaf to look beyond.

In the space beyond he can see a very large clearing. There are a few huts and what almost looks like a tiny village. The huts are clearly built from the natural grasses and leaves of the jungle and it looks like there might be a small garden next to one of them. The area around the huts is well-packed to the ground and clearly often tended because there is a definite line at the edge of the jungle where the clearing began.

The residents of the clearing all wandering around and Michael’s eyes are quickly drawn to one that is making the pounding noise by appearing to chop some branches off a long stalk of a tree. That resident is a large giant, much like the one that was previously spotted! It is a massive humanoid with very dark skin. There are colorful tattoos all over the back of the one chopping on the tree.

Looking around the clearing, Michael counts at least six different huts and can see at least six different giants walking about the area. Some have bows over their shoulders, and all appear to be armed with at least an axe for chopping things. Far off to the right he can see where the path will enter the village through a crudely constructed gate.

ooc: are all the residence giants? or are there six giants walking around the clearing and humans as well? are the axes steel or stone? what's growing in the garden? the bows, are they short bows or longbows? how many arrows do they have? are there any large rocks in evidence around the place? any evidence of profound evil in the village? i.e. blood-stained altar, fallow races doing all the labour, signs like we "heart" evil or some such. an IRS office? any evidence of kids or women here?

Michael takes some time to observe the village, looking for a strategic weakness that they can exploit if need be and signs that they might need too. He also pays special attention to the jungle he has just passed through. Primitive villages like this patrol constantly, it's their default state of being. There is a good chance that he passed a scout during his treck here and He'd like to pass him again with no trouble if he can.

once he is confident that he has learned all he can from this vantage point he trecks back 100 ft into the jungle and then abandons stealth, if, he has failed to come up with an enemy scout, if he has found an enemy scout, he plays snake eater on his way back to the party.

during his treck back Michael blends with the surrounding really really well. Unfortunatly he has never actually seen a Black Palm Tree and in hugging up against it he gets a load of it's spines in his back. for 2 points of damage.

Trayvin is relieved that Michael and Anna have returned safe. He lets the rest of the Agents pepper Michael with questions while he tries to remove the tree spines. He just asks one question, "Do they seem friendly?"

" So as far as you saw, they are not 'warriors' per say, just villagers trying to scratch out a living from the land. If so then probably a soft approach is best. Do we have any translation spells handy or are we hoping they speak common?"

Michael stays hidden in the jungle, watching the clearing carefully. From what he can see, he only sees giants, no other types of creatures or humanoids at all. He tries to count the giants, and he’s able to detect six different giants, but he can’t be sure that’s all – there are a number of huts that could hold more that might not be outside and walking around. The axe that is striking the wood appears to be a stone axe.

He shifts his weight and looks at the garden. He’s not completely sure what is growing there, but it looks like some kind of root thing, as he sees various green shoots sticking up, but no fruits or anything that appears to be edible sticking up from the ground. He looks carefully at the weapons. They look to be longbows and the more he looks, the more he sees arrows located in various places: there are small piles of arrows next to some huts, each giant has a quiver with arrows on it, and there are even arrows lying on the ground near the garden. They are clearly prepared with arrows. But there are not many rocks around the area, and no large rocks. Deep in the jungle here is mostly packed, thick, black dirt.

He watches the individuals. He looks for different types of giants, but he doesn’t see any. All of them look like large, male giants. There are no obvious signs of any others. Strangely, he notices each of the giants appear to have a long pearl necklace around their necks, almost like a uniform because they are all wearing nothing else but loincloths, which probably serves them well in the heat of the jungle. They all have several tattoos, but they vary from giant to giant.

He checks for a scout and watches carefully, but he does not see any. He does spot a couple giants on the far side of the clearing, standing with bows in their hands. They are facing where the trail enters the clearing and appear to be alert and trying to stay out of sight.

Pompous listens intently to Michael's description of the camp. These don't sound like giants that he is used to. There use of missile weapons will make taking them on very difficult as they will a danger at a distance as well as up close.

He adds his 2 coppers...

" Maybe keep one or two of us out of sight in case an expeditious retreat is needed. Some cover fire may not be a bad idea."

Nikolai ponders the description of the giants and their village.
"No females? I wonder if they are being held as hostage? Those pearl necklaces, where did they get pearls around here? Sounds very fishy, or oystery, doesn't it? I have a hunch that if we can get them to talk, we should be able to make some kind of deal. Let's be on our toes though."

As he takes the lead again along the path, he asks over his shoulder, "Think of a way to immobilize those two guards without harming them. I'll try to talk first, but if they object, knocking them out without seriously harming them could buy us some leverage."

Hey Nikolai, I know you are the leader and all, but maybe it would be a good idea to let Pru do the talking, not only does she look a lot better than you, but she talks a lot slicker than you as well. I'm not saying you aren't handsome, you just aren't even in Pru's level when it comes to all things interpersonal related.

Now that they are set on a course of action, Sigvar takes his place at the front of the line. Shield set, sword sheathed he will be their front rank as they enter the town. If the giants start firing at them, Sigvar wants them shooting at him, not the others. He is armored to the teeth and capable of healing himself.

"The female giants may just be inside the huts," Pru points out, though she admits it seems unlikely. She goes with the group, again keeping to the center. She is ready, though, to step out and talk to somebody if that is what's needed.

"We can try that, Michael, but these are giants. Are they persuaded by human female beauty? Would you be more likely to listen to a female giant rather than a male? Would you let a giantess sweet talk you?" Nikolai grins as he figures that Michael would be on his guard against ANY female 'vamping'.

OOC: 'Vamping'. You need to watch 'I Love Lucy' when she plays a 'wicked city woman' trying to 'vamp' a cousin and chase him out their apartment and back to his home in Tennessee.

IC:"Pru, be ready to 'bat your eyes' and wiggle your curves in that female way if they seem a bit put off by my crude manly ways." He has a hard time stifling a chuckle and no one is in front of him to see his grin.
