DM Mark - Dwarves and Orcs Thursday January 17th, 2019 12:06:33 AM
The party moves to where the Magnificent Mansion was created. Velarin knows where the door is, but does not open it. He moves behind Brom and Baratore. Everyone readies for a fight with their prisoners. Edson pulls out his bow and knocks an arrow.
Velarin concentrates as he waves his arm in a sweeping arc, and where there once was a doorway now there are about 19 dwarves. All are badly injured, and most are still unconscious. While you had left them bound, their bonds are gone. The injured appear to have been tended to. Those that can stand do so, and glower at you. A couple of them hold daggers, which is surprising since you thought you’d disarmed them all. Brom and Barratore glower back.

Barratore says, "We are taking you on a short trip to a nearby colony where we believe you may learn what it truly means to be dwarves. Your alternative is death. You will be bound to each other. If you attempt to escape, we will stop you. If you succeed, however slim, you will be in the wilderness without provisions or protection. Question?"
One of the dwarves steps forward. ”I am Lefnun. I speak for those here. Brok over there is dead. The rest are injured. Maybe they’ll die too. We are in no shape for a trip, but maybe that doesn’t matter to you. Do with us as you will, but if it’s a death, let it be a quick and clean death as befits a warrior. Do not lock us away again where we will starve, or march us until we die.”
Another dwarf says, ”So where you jerks, I mean gents takin’ us? What sorta colony?” This gets him a sharp look from Lefnun.
There are a few orcs nearby and they hear what’s going on, and they wander back. A couple of them hold bags of some things they seem to have found. They look at the dwarves, at the party, and then back at the dwarves. Other orcs seem to be making their way back as well.
”Oooo. I wanna kill ‘em. Slowwwww.” “No way you scuz! I gots beat more ‘n you did - I wanna do it!” “Hey, there’s plenty - we kin all kill sum.” “Yeah, we kin kill ‘em slow or fast - whatever ya guys want. As long as we kin kill em.” “I get their stuff.” “No way you buttsmack! I get their stuff!” “Grrrr. I’ll fight you fer it!”
Two of the orcs square off, seemingly ready to fight. Again.

V just shakes his head rather dejectedly. Tired of dealing with both groups, V decides to stand quietly and let the others explain while he contemplates the ramifications of fireballing both groups into ash. Perhaps leaving these Orcs here wasn't such a good idea after all.

Barratore takes a step forward, leaving his blade casually on his shoulder, "Lefun, I am Barratore Steelwind and if your deaths is what we were looking for, you and I would not be talking." Barratore then squares off towards the orcs, "Get yourselves gone. Unless you want to go through me."
He gives them a glare and turns back to Lefun, "We have no intention of marching you to death and I tell you we will assist with your wounds. There is a clan of dwarves and humans who through hard work and mutual respect live in peace not far from here. We are taking you there and asking them for their good graces to accept you into their clan. In time, it is my hope you can regain your honor."
"What can any of you tell us about the lake or what lies beyond?"

Tishe’ tried to back up Barratorre’s words by unpacking her healing kit and Cure Light Wounds wand. She ‘tsk’s and shakes her head. “We have used the magical mansion for our own rests before, and we know it is well-stocked with food, soft beds, and refreshment. And you were all stable if mostly unconscious when put into the mansion too, so none of that. Sieur Barratorre gave you the offer, as goodly and kindly a one as you don’t deserve. And you can accept or not. Accept and we escort you free and clear to a nearby dwarf hold. Not, and we leave. No muss, no fuss, just a simple offer.”

DM Mark - Dwarves and Orcs Friday January 18th, 2019 11:47:24 AM
Velarin is running out of patience with these folks - dwarves and orcs alike.
Tishe takes out some healing supplies, but does not use them, and Edson offers to help her. She calls the dwarves out about their mention of starving to death in a comfortable, food-filled mansion. Lefnun is a bit stung by her words. "Well, we didn't know if them ghosts were gonna run outta food, or if you jus decided to leave us in there. But yeah, I guess it was alright."
Barratore steps up. With a hard look and a sharp word the orcs melt away, almost tripping overthemsleves as they pull back with fearful apologies. Barratore tells the dwarves that if teh group wanted them dead, they would no longer be talking. He goes on to say, "We have no intention of marching you to death and I tell you we will assist with your wounds. There is a clan of dwarves and humans who through hard work and mutual respect live in peace not far from here. We are taking you there and asking them for their good graces to accept you into their clan. In time, it is my hope you can regain your honor." Tishe chimes in to back up Barratore. Brom just glares.
Lefnun takes a moment, looking at the dwarves around him for any protest or response. Then he says, "Fair enough. You have beaten us and we accept this. We will offer you no resistance on this trip, though we will need some healing to get my people in shape to travel. I ask that you give me a weapon to enforce my word, and to protect myself as we go. I also ask that you have weapons ready for the rest of us should we face trouble. But I can tell you that we will not fight you." As he looks around again he gets some angry looks from the others, but they remain silent.
Barratore asks about the lake. Lefnun says, "Hmmm. That lake is a bad place. We were told that there are monsters in its depths. Our leaders would sometimes take goods and ore across and would return. I heard some of the metal men came from there. I want no part of that, and we will not follow you there." There is general agreement on this point among the conscious dwarves.
Sense Motive DC 20 - Highlight to display spoiler: {You sense that Lefnun believes he has some authority among the dwarves. You sense no subterfuge, but there is fear and anger held in check.}

Emrys approaches the group of orcs and tries to impart on them a few words of wisdom. He speaks to them in their orc language, like an orc (diplomacy: 31)
"Don't forget who you are! You are no longer slaves ... you are masters of the mine. Stand tall, strong and proud ... unified like a true clan. Don't quarrel among yourselves, especially in front of outsiders. Show each other and your neighbors dignity and respect, and it will be shown to you as well."
He then returns to face the dwarves. Emrys says, "You might as well drop your weapons ... I know you're not going to use them. I suggest you allow my mercy of healing."
(How many are there and what is the severity of their wounds ... Emrys has a number of healing spells left.)
DM Mark - "What's a digger naty?" Monday January 21st, 2019 1:12:29 AM
Velarin advocates for resting here before heading out of the mines.
Emrys speaks with authority to the orcs. They listen to his words, but he's not sure if they are getting this.
"Um, we're not a clan. Are we a clan? We're gonna need a name then." "Ha, you shud call us the Mine Pickers!" "Your clan shud be the nosepickers." "What's a quarrel?" "We're sposed to show our neighbors a digger naty. What's a digger naty?" "I dunno, but he sez if we show em our digger naty, they'll show us theirs!" "Mebbe you kin leave the dwarves here an we kin be the boss of them fer a change."
Emrys tells the dwarves to drop their weapons, and the two that had daggers do so after a bit if hesitation. He can see from their mostly unconscious state that they need some healing.
(The dwarves are in pretty bad shape. There are 18 alive and one dead. More than half are unconscious, and of those that are awake all are badly injured.)

(Emrys can cast six Cure Moderate Wound spells: 2d12+10/each = 31, 28, 27, 15, 27, 21. Just one casting to each unconscious dwarf. This should wake up 6 dwarves or at least stabilize them.)
He gives the two dwarves something else to hold, other than daggers... a Cure Moderate Wound potion each.
(I can do more Cure spells, but I have to consult Emrys' Spell Power Chart at home.)

Tishe’ smiles. “Digger Naty sounds like a great name for a tribe. It reminds me of a great half-orc warrior of the Sargrass called Grymash. Fierce in battle, kind to those without power, and worshipped the Gray Lord. He had a knack of coming up with good names.”
DM Mark - “Digger Naty sounds like a great name for a tribe.“ Tuesday January 22nd, 2019 12:07:27 AM
Velarin waits on the healers, fighters and orcs before resting.
Emrys steps up and heals the dwarves. Between his spells and a couple potions, he finds the dwarves are able to make the trek. Probably. Some are still pretty badly hurt, but all are ambulatory. In response to the orcs’ idiotic blather, he says in dwarven, ”Gentlemen, consider yourselves very fortunate."
They respond in dwarven, ”You have no ideal That is the one silver vein among all the ore - the orcs are now your problem.” The other dwarves concede that it will be nice to be done with the orcs.
Tishe tells the confused orcs, “Digger Naty sounds like a great name for a tribe.“
The orcs seem to give this a little thought. But just a little. “Digger Naty it is! Dats our new tribe name! Ok.” “I guess I know what a Digger Naty is now - it’s us!” “Yeah, beware the Digger Naty’s, or they’ll Digger your Naty.” “Ha, yeah, we’ll Digger all o’ yer Natys!” “Ooo. I found a rat ta eat!” “Hey, I want a rat!”
The party and the dwarves all settle down to rest. You’re not sure you really trust either these dwarves or the orcs. The orcs continue to ransack what’s left of the mines. The dwarves begrudgingly go where you tell them, though they seem compliant. Mostly. You wonder if they or the orcs would murder you in your sleep first given the chance.
You’re uneasy enough to set a watch for the night. Occasionally, the one of you on watch can see the dwarves watching and studying you, but the night passes without incident. You awaken renewed, but still in an unpleasant mine, with unpleasant company, and a rather uneasy feeling - like you can’t trust anything.

Emrys and Tishe will be able to have the dwarves at least ready for travel is relatively short order. Barratore settles down for a couple hours of sleep and then remains on watch the the rest of the night, thanks to his Ring of Sustenance.
The uneasy feeling that is all about, Barratore cannot help but wonder if the mines or the ore in the rock, or perhaps the lake has something to do with it. If so, will the orcs suffer as a result. This will need to be a place that warrants future visits
