DM RobC - "Are you ready to see the Tree? It's quite magnificent..."
Wednesday January 23rd, 2019 5:23:44 AM

It is an uneventful trip back to the Tree. Perfect weather makes the journey quite refreshing and makes the countryside all the more beautiful. Isabel cuddles up to Owen each night as the group sit around a campfire, while Armand regales the group with "music". It seems as if the world has gone back to the way it is supposed to be.

The trip is only a few days and before long the Tree can be seen on the horizon. It is still coming out of it's dormancy brought on by the Sargrass's appearance but nonetheless looks in Owen's words: magnificent.

From this distance you can see folk conducting business and trade around the base of the Tree. Wisps of smoke come from the chimney of the Treetop Tavern. It looks like a small caravan may have arrived. You can see a number of small wagons parked around the base of the Tree and into the nearby fields.

Drawing closer though you notice the Tree still doesn't look quite right. Instead of it’s normal vibrant colors and fresh scent, it’s leaves still appear a bit shriveled and there is a faint smell of decay emanating from the Tree. There's always something going on with this thing!

Isabel and Simon look in awe at what will become their new home. "It's amazing! Words can't describe it"

It doesn't look like any of the townsfolk have noticed you.

"Ahh, it is nice to be home." Atlas breathes in the smells and sounds of home, but something is off. " 'Osul, Armand, do you mind asking Liliput how the Tree is doing? It doesn't seem to be back to its old self just yet. Heck, I don't know that it ever will be, but let's see what she has to say."

Atlas makes his way through the wagons of the caravan, checking in with the guards and asking about their journey to the Tree. Anything he can learn about trouble along the route will be useful.

"Just what I was thinking, Atlas. We should see if this is related to the picture, eh? All good Armand?"

When Armand is ready they set off for The Leafy Chapel.

Elyngael is happy to see the Tree and remembers how it wasn't that long ago that she was a newcomer to it. Now she feels almost as if she has come home. She hears Atlas's remark and starts to look at the Tree more closely for any changes (d20 + 17=22 Percepetion). Most likely she is still too excited to take note of anything different.

Neshi arrives with the others and sees the tree, but unlike the others who have seen the tree in good health, He doesn't seem to alarmed at what he sees as it is an improvement over what he saw last.

DM RobC - "This is very mysterious"
Thursday January 24th, 2019 5:51:15 AM

It's unanimous. It is nice to be home.

Atlas moves through the caravans. They all look to be traders of one kind of another and have already set up a variety of stalls around the base of the Tree. Combined with the permanent shops it has the feel of a bustling marketplace. Atlas learns that the caravan travels from town to town, selling and trading. It isn't as big as the main caravan that comes via the Tree every few months but it is decent. The guards with the caravan appear friendly enough and are happy to stop and chat with a Warden. Your fame has, after all, been spreading across the Wold. They tell that they have passed a few small groups of people who looked suspicious, but with a caravan of this size they ward off most attackers. You have enough experience to be able to tell someone who can fend for themselves and by the way these guards carry themselves you feel confident they are more than capable of protecting themselves.

Owen laments the departure of their friend. Mack's skills would be handy right now. Perhaps the man will return some day. It would be good to see him again.

Elyngael and Neshi look over the Tree for themselves. It certainly doesn't appear entirely healthy. It's Elyngael's opinion that it looks somewhat worse than last she saw it. Some residual impact from the Sargrass or a new issue to deal with perhaps? How a Tree this size handles all that it has been though is anyone's guess. Most normal trees would have died long ago.

Osul and Armand set for the Leafy Chapel. Isobel takes Simon's hand and kisses Osul on the cheek"I'll take a look about the stalls, love. I promise not to buy too much". Arriving at the chapel they can't find Lilliput. There are quite a few worshipers present saying prayers though. More worried faces in here than happy ones.

The mood about the Tree varies. The newcomers are quite happy and conducting their business. To them all is as it should. The Tree regulars however look uneasy. There is concern about the health of the Tree. It hasn't recovered as they had hoped and there are worries about what they would do if the Tree failed to recover at all.

Spirits improve though on seeing your return.
"The Wardens are back! They'll know what to do!"
"Aye. I'll sleep better tonight. That's for sure"
"Just in time. I was starting to really worry"

The leaders of the Tree aren't anywhere to be seen. Laughingwater, Miles, Folbre, Ciyradyl and even Lilliput. None are about.

It has only been ten minutes or so since the party returned and it seems that was long enough for word to reach James. You see him walking very quickly, almost jogging, towards you "Sirs! Thank Alemi you have arrived." It takes a moment for him to regain his breath whilst at the same time trying to stay composed "Things have not been well these past days. People are troubled about the health of the Tree. It has still not healed"

'Osul catches Owen's attention - as if he didn't already have it - and says, "No cause for alarm, happens all the time. I think it's the hair! Now, I wish Mack was here to Greenmage the , but this time we're just going to have to work together, and rely a little on the only druid The Culverwood could spare right now. I have an idea or three. We need to know where the Leadership have gone, when, and what they were doing in the lead up. I have the bare bones of a plan to commune with The Tree, and hopefully find out what ails it, with a back up plan that I'll save for discussion at table this evening. It would be prudent to check the carts arrayed below, just for elimination purposes, and check on those that have left in the last day or two. Also likely worthwhile checking for tracks or other signs beyond the carts and the drip-line to confirm that they haven't just wondered off." He wonders if they have somehow tried to do commune with The Tree themselves.

"Thank Alemi, James! And thank you.", he states purposefully. Still, he cannot help wondering how all this could have gone so awry (Tree sick and the management lost, abducted, or worse?) in, what, four days? That said, it cannot hurt The Tree if the inhabitants are less worried.

"And don't forget that The Tree gave us The Sapling to communicate with. Maybe they are out with it?"

'Osul breathes deep, looking to pick up clearer signs of the source of the malodorous malady over a minute or three to start. Perception: 28, Know.Nature: 23, Heal: 35

I have heard tell of spells that allow druids and even rangers to talk to trees and plants, do we not have access to these spells and if not why. It would seem if we are dealing with a magical semi tree entity that we should keep a supply of such spells handy.

Atlas slaps James on the back in a friendly manner, "Come now James, we just got back. Tell me something good before rushing into the bad." Then with a quieter voice, "We can see that the Tree isn't doing well, we'll get to that."

Eventually Atlas waits to hear the whole story, hoping it leads to where the leaders of the Tree might be. If he has a chance, he pipes in, "Any word on how well the new sapling is doing?"

Finally, once James gives them all the information he has, he states "OK, it looks like we're going to be working. I need to run to the Catacombs to get something. I'll be back shortly."

Armand strokes his chin. "Well all things come to Gargul in their time. But I'm not sure it's the Tree's time. I can cast a spell to seek advice from Gargul but it would have to be tomorrow as I do not have it prepared for today."

He turns to Atlas. "So Atlas how do those merchants look? No one acting suspicious or antsy, like they were trying to pull a fast one and are worried now that we're back? Are the Tree's guards out among them keeping an eye out for fast talking merchants selling inferior goods?"

He turns to the group again. "I'm not very nature wise. So I'll leave it to some of you to check the sapling. I think I'll head up to the Triple T. Maybe all the leadership is up there. They do seem to congregate there when things are amiss." Armand then heads up to the Triple T.

DM RobC - "They do seem to congregate there when things are amiss"

Owen and Elyngael check around the base of the Tree. The thing is huge and it would take a while to properly search the entire base of it, however it certainly doesn't look the way you last recall seeing it. The bark feels a little damp. Things are certainly amiss. Owen doesn't see any of the leadership nearby.

Elyngael doesn't notice anything particularly unusual in regards to the wagon tracks. They all came together and have spaced themselves out nicely to open their own stalls.

Armand takes a pragmatic approach. Everything must go to Gargul eventually. Trees likely as well.

Atlas considers heading to the Catacombs but decides to delay it for the time being (OOC: You are free to keep posting in game. Anything you purchase at the CC will be found delivered safely to your home)

Osul starts developing a plan. Find out where the leadership have gone. Find a way to commune with the Tree. Neshi has heard tell of such spells, and indeed, it is something Osul may be able to do had he had reason to prepare such things today. Tomorrow is an opportunity.

Atlas and Osul give thanks to James and greet him warmly.

Armand decides a trip to the Triple-T is in order. James pipes up "The leaders are there now! Discussing the issue and trying to work out what to do" Perhaps that is the 'something good' Atlas had been hoping for? The leaders here will surely know what to do. "Shall I go and announce your return?"

He chose a form that Khan and Elyngael were already familiar with, and could get a good number of riders into the air.

"And now some truly good news. This is Owen's wife and son. They have returned with him. We haven't yet worked out the living arrangements, but could you take them to the headquarters. Perhaps show them the alchemy room and maybe pack up what's in there. Maybe that would make a good quarters for them...we may have to have a partitioning wall added or removed, as the case may be. Isabel and Simon smile and look to Owen before joining him for the walk back to the house.

The party gather themselves and make for the Triple-T.

You need to push through a few onlookers however once your presence is know the crowd parts to allow you easy access to the tavern.

The mood inside is mixed. The table have mostly been cleared away to create a big enough space for the leaders to sit in a large circle with enough room for residents of the Tree to stand around and be seen. The leaders seem to be mostly calm. The onlookers though are all trying to be heard. All concerned about what the future may hold. What about my livelihood? What if the caravans no longer stop here? Where would we live? What about my dog? Ciyradyl seems to be trying to take charge of things but is having trouble easing the crowd.

Finally someone inside notices you "They're here! The Wardens are here! We're saved!" The cheers draw the attention of everyone such that all eyes turn to you. Ciyradyl looks visibly relieved. He won't have to struggle with the crowd any longer.

One elderly man stands and hobbles quickly over. He reaches out to vigorously shake Owen's hand "Bless you. Bless you all." He grins a toothy grin and makes his way outside.

In only a matter of moments he slowly makes his way back inside and slumps into a chair "Nope. The Tree's still sick"

The party call for calm and get it. All are on the edge of their seats to hear what the Wardens have planned and how they will be saved.

Ciyradyl smiles warmly "There now. That's better. Give the Wardens a chance to hear what has happened. I'm sure we can ALL work together to fix this" She looks around the room trying to make sure all can see her. By the way she presents herself you can tell that she's trying to convey that every person in the room may need to play a role here and not rely on the Wardens to do all the work by yourselves.

There are general rumblings of agreement.

Ciyradyl speaks calmly "Now then. This only started a few days ago but the Tree has been affected very quickly. It was barely noticed at first to be completely honest. Perhaps it has been going on much longer? Regardless, it is noticeable now. The Tree looks sick once more. Over the past three days it has spread so that most of the lower branches and leaves are all looking shriveled and curled. We have no idea what may be causing it."

"Perhaps I might speak?" A reasonably well dressed young man has raised his hand and takes a step forward. He's a human and you'd place him in his early 20s, so quite young. He's clean shaven and has short dark hair. He doesn't look the adventurer type

"My name is Fredorian. Fredorian Laroutte. I know I'm new here and all, but I'm told these sorts of things happen here from time to time. Maybe it's nothing. Maybe it's something. The thing is, it seems to happen when the Wardens are coming and going. I'm not saying they have anything to do with it by any means yet it is becoming quite a coincidence isn't it?" Fredorian looks about the room for some sort of response, and he gets one from Miles

"Pfft. Fredorian Laroutte? Your father is one of the reasons we need the Wardens in the first place! That..." Miles then uses a number of colourful terms to describe Gaston. When out of adjectives he adds "My apologies for speaking like this in front of the ladies present"

Fredorian maintains his composure though. "Look. My father is an influential member of many communities, but let's be honest, he is not a good man. I understand that and I agree with you. It is best he stay locked up in prison far from here and far from where he can harm anyone again. May he be locked up the rest of his days and have the same chains in death" It is Fredorian's turn to look to the others here "My lineage doesn't change the facts though. There are a lot of coincidences between the presence of these Wardens and the troubles of the Tree"

Perception DC15 or Sense Motive DC20 Highlight to display spoiler: {You notice Fredorian is talking in present tense when talking about Gaston. It would seem he doesn't know about his father's death}

They are the ones that esure the safety of all and see to the well-being of every single person here. You should know that before throwing around any accusations like that"

Fredorian bows his head "My sincere apologies. I did not mean to accuse not disrespect anyone. Simply call out an observation"

When Armand asks, he adds, "I'll put stock in our library and a solid grounding in healing and nature. It would be nice to be able to ask the patient what ails it — when, where and how it started. But every bit of information helps and is welcomed."

Atlas sits back, listening and watching the crowd to see what their reaction is to all of this, including the comments from Fredorian. The others have spoken well enough, so he continues to sit back and bide his time as things play out.

However, he cannot completely help himself. Leaning over to the patron next to him, "Hmm, he didn't say if the Tree got better when the Warden's were coming or going, just that it was changing when they were coming and going. You think he would be more clear to avoid the conflict...or maybe that was exactly his intent." He takes another sip of drink.

Fredorian simply stutters "My... my father?". He pauses for a long time "I hadn't heard" He looks lost for a moment but then composes himself.

The others aren't 100% sure, yet Atlas has a nagging suspicion that Fredorian is genuinely surprised and hurt.

"Well then" Fredorian smooths out the wrinkles from his shirt and glares at Elyngael and then to Armand. His voice is very measured yet becomes quite emotional "I make a simple and factual observation and you ... you ... try to bully me and dismiss me for simply asking a question .. It's the way dictators..." He stops to catch his breath

"I called out a coincidence. Did I accuse you? Did I say it was your deliberate action? Perhaps you inadvertently collected a cursed artifact in your extensive travels? Perhaps someone is out to get you and you have drawn them here? It is YOU that makes the wicked accusations. I dare ask a question and you won't even stop to consider it. Because of what? You don't like my father?" Fredorian shakes his head as his temper rises "I'm sorry. Didn't like. I see you judge someone on their 'breeding' instead of themselves as a person. Your family must.." He is practically spitting the words at this point.

"Alright. I've heard enough" Miles stands, storms over to Fredorian and grabs him by his collar "Thankyou for coming. Time for you to leave" Fredorian makes no protest as he is roughly lead away. He simply looks back at the party with a glare.

Atlas and Osul look about. There don't look to be any 'Fredorian' sympathizers in the room. Noone rushing to his aid. Simply nods that the scene is over, the troublemaker ejected and good riddance.

Ciyradyl shakes her head and waits for Miles and Fredorian to be well and truly gone.

"Right. Now where were we before all that nonsense. Oh yes. Questions.

Well, we're still not entirely sure. It's only been the past couple of days that things have looked bad but it's enough to have worried a few people here. With the caravan we've close to a hundred people here right now. Of course the more people that worry, the quicker it spreads, the more hearsay gets involved and soon follows panic. This meeting is to nip it in the bud."

Laughingwater adds to the discussion "The caravan came three days ago just before noon. Around the same time that things got really bad" He purses his lips "Our young friend arrived with it"

"It started before they arrived" Lilliput is standing with her hands clasped together "The Tree was healthy when you left and stayed for some time. As Ciyradyl said, it has been worse the past few days however the effects were first noticed perhaps a week ago. Small at first."

Lilliput sighs "We do not have enough information to go on, friends. Tomorrow morning I plan to speak with Alemi to find out more. He may have some guidance for us"

The crowd are looking more relieved. Alemi may have some answers, but even if He doesn't, the Wardens surely will.

As Fredorian is led out by Miles, 'Osul calls, "Do not speak to us of hate. We Wardens nearly gave our lives trying to protect your father, and that was considerably more consideration than he gave people here when he last visited. I make a simple and factual observation - no relative of his was anywhere nearby when his time came! And there is no way his family there were not notified afterwards. You might want to have words with your great-uncle."
'Osul recalls his uncle (one of his uncles?) being of good if not high standing in Plateau City, if not neck deep in the dealings of the mysterious Syndicate - if only in Gaston's mind.

...and as Fredo is led away, 'Osul thinks Gaston's former butler James is someone he would likely want to speak with while visiting, and he is getting Isobel and Simon settled in.

He is glad to hear the earliest signs preceeded the arrival of the caravan by days, even if it does mean this has stolen a weeks headstart on them. He confirms timings with Lilliput for the morning, trying to cover as many bases as possible.

"If this is what we have then I hope we have great success tomorrow. By-and-by, the leadership of Fair Meadow is happy for our assistance with their recent troubles with the Death Dragon Cult, and ... where is Caleb? He can't have left already?

Atlas listens as 'Osul responds and then quietly (as quietly as an armored man in a famous adventuring group can) moves away from the bar and towards the door. If any of The Wardens notice him he makes eye contact with them and let's them know there won't be any trouble, as best he can with a hand signal and a smile anyway.

As he steps out he picks up the pace and tracks down Fredorian. He is adamant about not letting him get away and about ensuring he has a chance to speak with him. If Fredorian tries not to then Atlas will attempt to intimidate him to get him to stop, but only as a last resort.

"Hold on there, we're not sending you off to go and start another feud with us. I've had enough of this horse dung lately. You are clearly upset about your father's death, yet you spoke about him before that as if he was evil and deserved to die. You speak with passion and you say something you believe to be true, but you don't provide facts. These are the things that dictators do, to manipulate a crowd and to cause chaos for your foes. I'm not saying that is what you are, I'm just providing the facts as I see them. So, what's your truth? Why are you here? What facts do you have about the Tree's health and our time here, because the facts show that the Tree was doing well until a few days before you arrived. That doesn't align to our arrival? And how would you know so much if you just arrived. Come on man, nothing is lining up, so tell me the truth or so help me I'm going to assume you're carrying on your father's legacy and I'm going to end it right now."

Atlas is fairly non-chalant about the whole thing. He isn't scared of this man and he doubts he'll really get answers, but he's going to give it a shot so that if he has to kill him in the future then he can at least do it with a clear conscious.

Armand watches Fredorian be escorted out. He signs and speaks to the table of leaders. "I guess that is all we can do for now. Tomorrow morning I will have some spells prepared that will allow me to consult Gargul and perhaps find a lead that way." He pauses and then continues. "I'm sorry that was poorly done on our part, concerning Fredorian. I should have been a little more understanding. But we had just returned from a lengthy journey and were a little frayed around the edges."

After 'Osul speaks Armand joins in. "Yes, Fair Meadows may be interested in doing some trading, or perhaps extending any trade routes that way. Perhaps I will speak with some of the people in the caravan."

OOC what time of day is it, is it close to evening meal/bedtime?

Armand excuses himself and goes down to the merchants in the caravan. As he goes from merchant to merchant he will inquire first about what books they may have to sell. After seeing what they do offer, he will ask if they have a magical one (i.e. if they sell daggers, do they have magical daggers, if they sell amulets and jewlery do they have magical ones. Any one that does he will then pretend interest cast Detect Magic to look at the item, and in the process look around that Merchants stall/wagon, and then say nope that's not quite what I'm looking for.) Osul tries to think of all the people that tie together in this situation. It is certainly tangled, but right now there's still a sick tree to worry about. He check with Liliput as to when she will try casting some spells. "Daybreak. It is said to be His time. It is when the sun rises over the horizon to spread it's warm healing glow over The Wold."

Neshi asks a few more questions about what may have been happening. Lilliput is the one to answer "No. Nothing. Everything around the base looks fine. I mean, it smells a little strange but that's it" You noticed the same when you arrived.

Outside, Atlas catches up to Fredorian and unloads on him. But Fredorian just stands there straight faced. Occasionally he looks down to kick a stone but that's about it. Once finished Fredorian steps up close to Atlas to look him square in the eye. The two stand face to face with neither backing down. It's at this moment that Owen intervenes to try and calm things down and try to show to Fredorian how he could be seen in a positive light.

It looks like it worked.

Fredorian looks to Owen, back to Atlas, and then to Owen again "I think it best we spend some time apart until things cool down. We wouldn't want things to escalate further" He takes a few steps away from Atlas but not turning his back. Once at a 'safe' distance he turns and walks off towards one of the wagons.

Any fight will have to wait another day.

Armand looks to do some shopping with the caravan traders and blend in with Elyngael covering his rear. The caravan is quite well stocked. Each stall perfectly laid out and all wares visible. The traders are certainly talkative too. Being seen making sales with heroes would be very good for business after all. These folk are very professional - expert merchants. Their words come naturally off the tongue and don't sound like something that has been said time and time again.

Everything you see looks to be of the quality they advertise. Nothing looks to be hidden. Anything declared as magical turns out to be so. None of the traders take any offence by the casting of the spell. "Liars and cheats aren't welcome to travel with us." explains a woman selling tobacco. "They hurt everyone's business. Being reputable means customers can have faith in what they're buying and that means purse strings open just that little wider" She reaches for a small bag "Speaking of purses, this is tobacco from the hills of Humble's Ford. Smoked by many halflings and very popular. The smell of the smoke can be quite sweet. Only 1 gold piece should you be interested"

Elyngael sees nothing out of the norm. Just the usual business of merchants. She can see the guards from the caravan walking among the stall. They aren't doing anything untoward. You have enough experience to know that these men are simply trying to make their presence know to ward off any trouble. She does see Fredorian stomp his feet as he makes his way to one of the covered caravans. He looks to be in a foul mood. He sits on the steps of it and takes off his boots before picking them up and going inside.

Armand is disappointing that none of the merchants seem to have any books. He asks each of them to be on the lookout for books and when they next return he would be more than interested in acquiring some more volumes for the library.

Armand will also ask them about their travels and tell them that Fair Meadows might be a new destination for them, and that the lord protector Hiram Tubalcain has brought peace to the city of Stonebriar.

Elyngael doesn't recognise any of the guards, so tries one at random. He isn't ready to leave the market just yet and advises he could once the stalls close for the day.

After the tension of the past few hours Atlas and Owen are about ready to have the day done. Maybe one day they will be able to run a sword through Fredorian, and maybe not.

If he's more refined, maybe he needs the refinement of Armand and politics instead of down-to-earth, manful talk. We'll see how it turns out. For the moment, he probably needs time to handle the emotions of his father's death." Owen smiles to see the domestic scene at the Treehouse. He asks Simon, "What book did you find? We have plenty on necromancy and botany, thanks to a drow madman who was tearing up the Culverwood."

He muses quietly to himself, "Hmm, this is something I could get used to. Is this the kind of life I should be after?" It is something to ponder, but seeing James he quickly remembers there is business to be had.

DM RobC - "No, that is probably it for now"
Monday February 4th, 2019 5:42:49 AM

Things are certainly a lot calmer inside the house than out.

Owen and Armand make their way to the library where they discover young Simon flicking through books. He is reading through one about different herbs and how they can be used for medicines, potions and poisons. You can see he is treating the book with respect, turning the pages very carefully and trying to avoid any creases.

The party regroup near the kitchen to politely take James away from Isobel. You all head to the sitting room for quiet chat.

James gives a recap of the past week. He gathers being taken aside from Isobel that the party wish this to be discreet so he keeps his voice low.

His account is much the same as you have already heard.

Around a week ago the tree started to show faints signs of things being amiss. Nobody really gave it much attention. Then the symptoms got worse. More and more leaves curling up and an unusual smell around the base of the Tree. Something like damp or rotting wood.

He then gives his observations on Fredorian. Hearing the name was enough for James to take interest in him.

The caravan arrived and Fredorian with it. He has acted normal as far as James can tell. He hasn't been trading but is often seen counting money and writing in ledgers with each of the travelling merchants. All are happy to see him. He even laughs with a couple. Overall quite friendly with them.

He hasn't caused any trouble or really stood out at the Tree. Quite nondescript really.

OOC: Well done team. Another perfect week!

Fredorian has done nothing wrong that we know other than taking a perhaps innocent jab at our reputation. We should leave him alone. Even inviting him to dinner could be seen as a way of keeping tabs on him and may provoke a negative response. And if you are seen going around following him it would definitely make things worse." He smiles at Atlas. "I mean after all you're not the most sneaky or subtle guy."

Armand nods at agreement with Owen. "Owen's right. For now we should get some rest and allow those of us with spells to prepare some for investigation tomorrow. I suggest those of you that can't cast spells be on alert as we are casting in case someone or something tries to disrupt the spells."

Armand pauses and muses. "Not that I'm paranoid, buy I'm paranoid. I think it would not hurt us any to maybe stand watch tonight. Just inside our quarters. I'll only need 2 hours actual sleep and can just be awake resting after that." Armand holds up his hand reminding everyone of his ring of sustenance.

After dinner Armand will go to bed. During the night he will mostly camp in the upper floor balcony looking down into the front of the inside of the house.
