Into the Jungle (DM JeffO)
Tuesday January 15th, 2019 3:01:04 PM

The Agents head down the trail, Sigvar and Nikolai in the lead. They reach the corner of the trail and the makeshift gate/barrier entrance to the camp. Water continues to drip everywhere and even with the various magical help, everyone is still sweating profusely.

Pompous carefully guards the rear while Pru makes some nervous conversation. Michaels keeps the internal banter going while Nikolai and Sigvar boldly walk up to the gate and call out to Parley.

They are answered by a barrage of arrows! Five or six arrows fly through the air. Most of them fall short or stick in the barricade, but one sticks into Sigvar’s plate armor, but does not penetrate it. The two giants that were “on guard” have stepped up and fired arrows. After they let the arrows fly, you can hear them yell out something. The other giants look in their direction, then over towards the gate…

OOC:
#5 and #6 fired the arrows. They are behind piles of junk and wood providing them cover. Indeed, we’re in combat rounds. If you are in the rear and post before someone in front, assume they’ll move out of your way. The gate itself, although not much of a gate, will slow you down to climb over/around it. Movement rate is halved for anyone who passes the gate.

Sigvar had thought this might happen, and had prepared, just in case speech wasn't possible. He reaches to his belt and takes out th severed head of the demon and tosses it over the gate. If the giants were being subjugated, then they might stop. If they were truly evil it would probably make no difference.

Sigvar throws the head over the gate. It rolls around. The giants don’t really appear to react to it. Trayvin considers casting a spell, but realizes that he is too far away to do so. Pru steps up and makes sure that Sigvar is protected. Anna prepares for battle by getting stronger. Nikolai yells at the giants to stop. Pompous, out of sight of the giants, readies an arrow. Sigvar also concentrates, trying to determine if the giants emit any evil. They do not.

The other giants move quickly to get behind additional barriers, unleashing bows as they do so. More giants appear out of some of the huts and join their allies. A rain of arrows flies through the air. A moment late they slam into the ground, some in the barrier, and one knocks into Nikolai’s shoulder, slamming him and spinning him around: that was a giant-sized arrow (25 damage)!

OOC:
Please note on the map that the scale is the standard 5 feet to a square. That puts the giants quite a distance from you. Also realize the gate is a choke point, be sure you have line of sight to things you want to attack, if you decide to attack things. The gate itself, although not much of a gate, will slow you down to climb over/around it. Movement rate is halved for anyone who passes the gate.

From the edge of the barrier to giant #5 is 220 feet. Trayvin is at least 15 feet behind the barrier, so that’s 235 feet. I think the range of calm emotions is just 200 feet. Giants #5 and 6 are almost 60 feet apart and the radius of calm emotions is just 20 feet. So I don’t think you can hit either one with that spell, sorry!

OOC: question. According to the map, Nikolai is up against the gate, that gate would provide complete cover against any giant as they won't have Line of Sight, he's behind the gate. Was that calculated in the arrow attack that hit him? Looks like a 32 is high enough but only if they can actually see him or shoot through the gate itself.

IC:
"Well, perhaps they don't understand common," Nikolai yells back to his friends. "But they probably do understand fire. Blow up one of their huts and maybe they'll talk."

Sigvar pushes past the makeshift gate. He continues to yell out at the giants. Pru steps up to Nikolai to help protect him from the massive arrows. Trayvin continues to yell out as well. Anna prepares more for battle as everyone waits to see what kind of creature she will turn into. She notices the branches in the clearing are a bit low, so if she decides to fly, the ceiling may limit her ability to move around a bit. Nikolai shrugs off the arrow and yells out as well.

The giants, for their part, have now settled into their defenses and appear to be completely ignoring everyone calling out to them. They let loose with an incredible rain of arrows that absolutely shower Sigvar, since he is the one that stepped forward. There are over TWO DOZEN massive arrows that fly through the air. While most land on the ground harmlessly, a few bounce off his armor. A couple manage to be aimed properly, but just don’t hit him. But three manage to find their way into cracks and spaces in his armor and he takes the brunt of a few hits (22 damage).

OOC:
The “gate” is little more than a couple of tree trunks that have been stripped of their limbs, so they don’t actually provide cover, but they do slow you down because you have to climb over them. It did take natural 20s to hit Sigvar, but with that many arrows, some were bound to hit! Even with the DR 10 on them, that’s still 22 damage.

Sigvar calls out to the Agents and takes off at a run towards one of the giants. Michael starts moving up with the other Agents. Travin casts a spell to prepare and makes his way across the gate. Pru throws up a wall of ice as she moves over the gate as well. Anna changes shape and the massive plant form all but blocks the trail. Nikolai loses a bit of patience and runs after Sigvar.

One of the giants sees Sigvar approaching. He throws his bow down and runs directly at Sigvar! He flies through the air and tackles him, the two of them crashing to the ground! Meanwhile, some of the other giants move, and giant arrows continue to fly, but fewer than before. One crashes into the ground near Michael, and a second slams into Pru (11 damage) who suddenly finds herself on the front lines facing the archers. Before she can react, another volley comes from across the battlefield, showering her and Michael with more arrows, some that strike their mark (17 more damage for Pru, 41 damage for Michael)!

OOC:
It looked like you were trying to put the wall of ice through a building, and the spell description says that can’t be done, so I put it just outside the building, hopefully that’s about where you wanted it.

Note for throwing alchemical fire: I see the maximum range on a thrown object as 50 feet. You’re going to have to get a bit closer, and can do that next round. As a tip, be sure you note where other people have moved... :) Also, the huts are not necessarily grass, as this is a rainforest jungle. They are more made of leaves and sticks than brown, dried grass.

Sigvar can take an AOO on giant #3 (AC 24). Giant #3 did go for a grapple and succeeded (40 vs CMD 30), so Sigvar is now grappled. Giant has a CMD of 39 if you choose to attempt to escape the grapple.

If he wasn’t covered with sweat before, he now is, after wrestling with a very large, nearly naked jungle giant that doesn’t use deodorant. Trayvin moves up to help Sigvar with the stinky creature. Pru is hurt, but puts up another massive wall of ice. She notices that the first one is melting fast in the massive heat of the jungle.

Nikolai slips around the two wrestling on the ground and carefully takes aim. When the giant spins just right, Nikolai slams in with a kidney shot making solid contact. The giant is stunned and releases its grip on Sigvar! Michael and Pru are brushed by various branches and vines as Anna moves past them and towards a giant.

Michael runs up and takes a shot at the stunned giant, striking true. Sigvar starts attacking as well, trying to take at least one of the giants out of the right. Pru has apparently had enough of being hot in the jungle and puts up yet another wall of ice. While the others have already started melting, anyone near the walls can start to feel a gentle, cooling breeze coming off them as they melt.

The lumbering plant-creature that is Anna squishes towards one of the arrow-firing giants, but is cut off by a massive wall of ice just before she reaches it. Nikolai, has to pause a moment to see if the giant has been killed. It is stunned, but appears to still be bleeding and breathing, so Nikolai takes a few shots at it trying to completely take it out. He does not succeed, but does manage to duck until Trayvin’s attempt to kill the giant as well.

Pompous yells and runs past the gate, almost running into Pru. He looks around the battlefield and can see a massive pile of bodies in one corner and lots and lots of ice walls everywhere else. He’s ready, but for what?

The giant that is attacked and surrounded shakes his head. He roars at those surrounding him, clearly annoyed that his tackle did not work. The giant shifts backwards and reaches out to grab Nikolai. He fails at his attempt, but has moved so that no one is currently flanking him.

OOC:
As I read the rules, when you move, you can only get a single attack in, pretty much all the time. So since Michael had to move before he attacked, I just took the first attack action there.

Nikolai can take an AOO against the giant (AC 24). No one is flanking, and be aware that if anyone moves from their current positions to flank, you will likely draw an AOO from the giant: he is using the pile of crap to keep from being surrounded at the moment.

Pru calls out to Anna, then moves over to support those in direct combat, casting haste. Sigvar takes advantage of the extra speed and steps up to finish off the giant before it can escape. The giant falls to the ground and there is a momentary silence. The jungle continues to drip and occasionally a bit of ice from the walls crack. You hear a yell from a giant somewhere on the far side of the ice walls. There is a swishing of plants as Anna moves towards the group as Trayvin warns about the giants coming around the walls. Pompous heeds the warning and is ready to launch arrows, but no targets appear…

OOC:

Ack! I'm out of town and I thought I had the map file to update, but I copied the wrong file! No map update for the next day or so, very sorry! They are gathered behind the pile, with cover, firing arrows across the field. Pru is the main enemy in sight at the moment (other than that massive plant thing, I'm assuming Anna did not change). [I'm going to have to beg the DM's indulgence in placing the wall, because without a map I'm not sure what's the best option. Pru can create 12 10-foot squares; she's been creating walls that are 20 feet high and 60 feet long. By now she should have some idea whether she needs the 20-foot height, or whether she can create a longer, shorter wall. Given that these are giants, I'm guessing we need the 20 feet. I want to put the wall close to the party so we can hide behind it. Based on the old map, maybe row 47 or 48?]

OOC: there is a way to fire arrows at no specific target. Usually it is used for mass combat where a unit of archers fires into a square, much like a splash weapon. So if you pick a square, not a specific target, and hit the square (being giants that's not all that hard), you can score some damage. Also, since arrows can arch, you can shoot over walls to some degree, say, aim VERY high, but crossbows can't do that since bolts don't arch.
It's up to the DM to allow such rules.

"All right, let's keep our voices down and Michael, keep a watch on the path, make sure no giants come following. Now, we were getting no where with these giants, and rather than kill them all off, I suggest we observe their behavior for a while, half a day or so, see if there any comings and goings of non-giant kind, then skirt their camp and move on. The group heads back down the trail. There is no immediate sign of pursuit from the giants. There is discussion about the melting ice, but Nikolai suggests that there is already so much moisture in this place that a little more won't matter to anyone.

Nikolai leads the group back down the trail, then suggests going off the trail. The jungle is really quite thick. If the group were to attempt to hide in the jungle, it will be difficult to prepare for battle, fire arrows, or even really see much of trail. It will take crawling on the ground and squeezing between branches and brush that is unbelievably thick. It can be done, but the Agents will not be in a position to fight from such tight quarters. Pompous and Sigvar bring up the rear and don't see any sign of pursuit.

IC: Nikolai looks for a break in the jungle, however small, but seeing that they are not being pursued, for the moment, he stops in the path instead.

"Ok, it does not look like they are following us for the moment. I don't like the idea of camping on this path either. We could make a concerted effort to cut a new small path off this one and cut us a small clearing. I'm open to suggestions.
One thing we could do is wait until dark. With Invisibility and Silence on our most noisy members, we might be able to skirt the giant village, if we have those spells available. Holding hands or onto a rope would keep us in touch with each other as we go."

The Agents stop to catch their breath. There is still no sign of giants following them down the massive trail. The jungle remains quite thick and the humidity is still very high. Sweat covers everything and you can hear water still dripping in many places in the jungle.

Trayvin talks about setting up camp while scouting the giants. Pru wonders if they should find a clearing and remembers that an hour or so back down the trail there is the clearing where they last fought the monkey-things. Anna mentions becoming a native animal. She realizes that she can become a sort of burrowing mouse that would likely live in the area, surviving off small bugs, but remaining out of sight easily.

Nikolai asks for suggestions, thinking the group could make their own clearing. It is possible, but will take a bit of work, to hack through the jungle. He also mentions possibly sneaking past the giants. Sigvar wants to kill everyone. Well, everyone that’s a giant, of course.

There are plenty of plants to choose from, many vines, and a number of trees. There seem to be few animals in the area at all. She surmises that there might be birds up higher in the trees, but with the jungle so dense, few at this level. She suspects there may be others, like monkeys and perhaps even panthers, but none are spotted in this area. Nikolai suggests that the group make camp there on the trail.

Sigvar and Pru discuss camping on the trail vs the clearing. Nikolai settles the discussion by leading the Agents back to the clearing and setting up a camp. Pompous aids the setup and works to create some shelter. There is no need to shelter from the sun, but the heat and humidity cannot be escaped. That leads Trayvin to talk with Pru about spells for the next day. Indeed, endure elements is going to be needed once again.

As camp is set up, Anna turns into a vampire-like mist. She almost immediately disappears from sight in the humid air dripping with moisture. She drifts over and into the trees and is lost to sight of those in the campsite. The wanders around a bit further up into the jungle. The trees are intertwined here and there throughout, and the further up she goes, the more twisted and tough the branches become. In fact there are areas up here where there are so many thick branches it would be easy to walk along the branches if not for all the leaves. In fact, there are a few areas that almost look like paths along the branches. There appears to almost be an entire additional world high up in the trees and she can start to hear the sounds of many different types of birds and perhaps some other things in this area. It was a long way up, and before she can explore more, she realizes the spell will expire, so she heads down to the ground. When she returns to the ground, as others prepare camp, Pru suggests a magical shelter.

"If everyone had Spider Climb, would that last long enough for us all to climb the trees and travers to the other end of the village along these treetop paths, then back down again?" he asks.

They set up camp with a watch for each shift, as usual. Nikolai picks a shift in the middle of the rotation.

To Nikolai, she says, "We already asked Anna about that, but this spell is just a little too powerful for her to replicate. So if I use the scroll, it'll be gone until I can get to the Catacombs for another." She looks around. "If we'd camped on the trail, I'd have used it," she says. "But I think we'll be all right here, so I think I'll hold onto it for a bit."

The Agents relax a little and set up a camp site. Eventually, Pru looks around and decides to hold onto the scroll for another day. So Pompous and the others pull a few old logs out of the jungle to try and set up a bit of a defensive site. The logs are soaked, moldy, and covered with moss, so Pompous gets quite filthy working with them. He tries to clean himself and his gear up afterwards, but the continued sweating isn’t making things easy for him.

Anna and Nikolai talk about what she found while scouting the massive jungle. The trees here are simply amazingly tall and the cover thick. Trayvin keeps an eye back to the trail to see if the giants are following them. There is no sign of the giants when he looks.

After a bit, the Agents finally settle into their regular evening camping routine. The group sets up away from the pathway and in a way to defend against anything that comes from that direction. Anna stays up all night with her plant form keeping watch. At one point she thinks she sees something moving in the direction of the path, but it is very dark here at night without the aid of stars. During Nikolai’s watch, he spots a pair of large emerald green eyes in the jungle right next to the campsite. When he moves to check them out, the eyes completely disappear in the darkness.

The next morning appears with a whimper. With the deep, dark cover of the jungle, there is no real sunrise, just a little bit more light than during the dark night. The heat and humidity continue in force. Water drips incessantly off different leaves and it is impossible to avoid getting dripped on. Michael wakes up to realize that his foot wasn’t quite covered and one foot is drenched and wrinkly. Looking around, the jungle looks exactly how it did last night: no new animals, no tracks of anything in the clearing, and no giants.

Sigvar wakes and starts casting a few spells. He feels refreshed after preparing for the day, but it is still darn hot in this jungle. Pompous uses his damp cloak to mentally prepare for the day. He ends up wet, wetter than he thought he would be. He carefully checks his bowstrings in the humidity and prepares his bow.

Michael jumps up, temporarily scared by his wet foot. He grins and looks around, then looks back up to the branches far above. He wonders if the group should head that way instead of through the giants. Trayvin helps ensure everyone is prepared with endure elements, helping Pru as she casts some spells as well. Anna turns into a small rodent and squeaks while Nikolai also ponders the trees.

The trees here are very, very tall. How tall no one can really be sure because no one has made it up to the top. The area below the branches is around 100 feet tall in the clearings, but shrinks down to 25 to 40 feet high in the trails. Climbing them without aid will certainly be a challenge mainly because everything is just soaking wet.

Anna is ready to go out and check out the giants. Will other Agents go with her? Will the Agents set up camp and explore? Will some Agents head to the trees and see what can be found up there?
