DM Mark - “Fresh air would do an Elf some good.“
Wednesday January 23rd, 2019 1:27:34 AM

Emrys and Tishe see to enough healing to get these dwarves in shape for travel. Velarin says he is ready to be out, and the others agree.

Everyone is glad to be out of this dank, depressing mine for a time. The huge, heavy mine doors swing easily on their hinges. The craftsmanship is impressive. You give some thought to the electricity trap that was on the closed doors before. Do you close them or leave them open as you go?

The orcs wave you good bye.

As you head out of the large mine doors, you see some of the villagers on their watchful guard outside the mind doors. None of them approach or speak to your group as you lead the surly dwarves out, but they do watch you carefully. Untrustingly. It seems odd they would remain silent, given that it’s probably quite a spectacle for the six of you to have about 18 bloodied (though healed a bit) dwarves in tow.

As you travel through the day, your mood brightens a bit. Must be the fresh air as Velarin had said that makes it seem like a burden has lifted. Even the dwarves seem a bit less suley. But as you go you can sense they chafe at their captive state, and you get hateful glances as you go. Still, it’s just good to be out.

You camp for the night. Lefnun asks where you are taking them and what you plan to do with them. You can provide them answers you wish. I assume you set a watch and take some precautions to make sure these dwarves do you no harm that evening. Do you sleep rough, or in your palatial mansion?
-----------------------------------

Around mid-day the next day, you approach a large clearing, and Emrys believes this is near the place he sensed in his Vision. This seems to some sort of market or meeting. There are humans and dwarves milling about, bargaining over food and manufactured goods.

As you approach, you are six strong - you appear to them to be warriors and scholars or spell casters of some sort. Your gear and your demeanor suggest you are people of some importance. Add to that, you have 18 dwarves in tow that appear to be prisoners or slaves from their behavior and clothing. This gets the attention of the dwarves and humans present. Weapons and crossbows are brought to bear in your direction. Three dwarves step forward, clad in heavy armor and bistling with weapons. They are backed by a few humans on horseback with lances.

One dwarf speaks, “Hold and state your business. Who are you that you approach on Tishan’s Market Day. Speak quickly and truthfully! And tell us why you have dwarves in such a condition.” You are certainly the center of attention, and all present seem to hang on your response. The mood is suddenly very tense.

(As a reminder, the result of Emry’s Vision was: Emrys gets a rough idea in his head where this place is, and that the leader of the human community is named Urvan and the dwarves leader is an old dwarf named Yeldarb. These are goodly people of some ability. He gets a sense that this may be the place he seeks, but it will take both the humans and the dwarves there working together to handle the dwarven prisioners.)

V suggests we close the doors until we return. "We don't need either curious townsfolk going in or Orcs going out until we return. Edson got us in once, he can do it again."

V answers the Dwarves questions honestly, and then with the need to watch the prisoners, camping in the rough it is.

Upon arrival in the clearing, and being confronted by those assembled, V takes a step forward with open hands. "I am Velarin, and we are the Keepers of the Vale. We were sent to investigate some strange happenings near some some villages about a day and a half from here..." V will then go on to explain the destruction of the village at the hand of the furnace golem, tracking it back to the Dwarven complex, and the general events that occurred within, resulting in the deaths of the Wizards responsible, and these Dwarves as prisoners.

"Having little idea what to do with the Dwarves, we sought some divine direction, and were sent here in the hopes that your assembled people's would be able to take them in and show them the benefits of peaceful coexistence with others."

V then stops speaking, waiting for any of the other Keepers to cover something he missed, or a response from those assembled

Barratore met the leveling weapons with ease, as well as the semi hostile opening. No different than what he would be doing if such a group rolled up to Magpie crossing. He does take one step forward with V, his own weapon still sheathed, to support V and not let him get too far away if things went south. Barratore adds that the divinely inspired Vision revealed the name of the human Urvan and that the dwarves leader is an old dwarf named Yeldarb.
Barratore adds a bit on the dwarves past, that of slavers, but that he feels they were not astray and are willing to work hard on a more righteous path and with help can be put upon a better path.

Barratore has no diplomatic skills and does not try to say anything other than the plain facts and his honest opinion

DM Mark - New Friends
Thursday January 24th, 2019 1:09:30 AM

When you left the mine, Velarin made it a point to close the doors - as much to close those orcs in as anything else.

Upon your arrival to this market attended by armed humans and dwarves, you are met with apprehension and a defensive stance from the warriors there. None of the Keepers shows any sign of being worried about this, and you are all respectful.

Velarin identifies your group and tells them you were divinely guided here as a place for your miscreant dwarves. This causes some sharp looks from those assembled and some defiant grumbles from your dwarven prisoners. Barratore confirms these facts, and adds that you are here to speak with Urvan and Yeldarb. Velarin chimes in and asks to speak with Urvan and Yeldarb. Tishe weaves trinkets as she drops the names of some famous dwarven heroes. Edson and Brom hold their tongues and their ground.

At the mention of Urvan and Yeldarb, a few guards scurry off. Soon a tall human clad in gleaming armor and a sturdy dwarf in leather garments approach. They both have an air of command about them. Emrys recognizes this pair and diplomatically says, ”"Greetings, good sir. I am glad to finally meet you." As they approach, the leather clad dwarf backhands the lead dwarven guard and about knocks him over.

”Ach, Torras you fool. All a’ ya, lower yer weapons now! These are the Keepers of the Vale - show some respect! That they come herding ill clad and injured dwarves is concerning. And frankly, speaks very poorly of you lot.” He jabs a stubby finger toward your dwarven prisoners.

Those on guard relate what you said.

”I am Yeldarb, an this here is Urvan. Sorry for the welcome, but we’ve had a spate of bandins lately. You say the gods brought you here as a place for these dwarves. Aye, we can take 'em in if they agree to this. I imagine they’re here ‘cuz the other options you gave 'em were… less appealing.” He turns to the dwarves. ”What say you - you willin’ to stay here an’ abide under my rule? Speak up!”

Your dwarven prisoners agree to this. Mostly. Sort of. Yeldarb gets a gleam in his eye, and orders some of his dwarves to take charge of your prisoners.

You are invited in as honored guests to stay for one or more days as you wish. Do you stay? Do you leave? There is quite a market here of finely crafted goods, many masterwork though none are magic, made by both the dwarves and the humans. The food smells good and the ale is excellent. Tishe’s woven trinkets attract some attention.

If you stay, you are taken care of and even flirted with. You find this is a semi-annual market and gathering, and there are festivities and entertainment, all under the watchful eye of the combined dwarven and human guard. The three elves in your group are a bit of an anomaly for them, but warmly welcomed just the same.

V smiles with relief as the issue of what to do with the Dwarves is taken from their hands, and of the fact the the name of the Keepers of the Vale had spread across the area, even beyond their direct impact.

As the offer to stay as their guests is made, V quickly rationalizes the aspects of staying or leaving, and while the Orc issue does need further attending to, seeing what they do in a couple days if left to their own devices might be an insight into their future. And, as The Keepers of the Vale, it is a necessary benefit to meet as many goodly people in the area as they can, and foster good relations.

V looks back at the others for a quick second to gauge their thoughts. He feels that he already has a good idea what the preference would be, and unless someone indicates otherwise, responds. "It would be our honor to stay for a day or two."

DM Mark - New Friends

Velarin is relieved to see the dwarven prisoners marched off. He gets the sense that they may also be a bit relieved. Afterall, they were not the leaders of their tribe and may fit in just fine under a firm hand and a watchful eye. Or not. In any event, they are no longer the Keepers’ problem.

All the Keepers seem eager to take a day or two to enjoy the hospitality of these people. As word spreads of who the Keepers of the Vale are, you all become rather popular. The guards seem to relax a bit with you here. As elves, Velarin, Emrys and Edson are a bit of a curiosity to those here. Velarin makes sure Yeldarb and Urvan know they can call upon the Keepers if there is need. Both leaders are thankful for the offer and work out how to best contact you through the folks in the Cinnamon Valley.

Warriors want to be your friends and hear tales of what your party has done. Many are keen to spar with Barratore, Brom and Edson. Edson is challenged to an archery contest or two and does rather well. Some say jokingly that it’s not quite fair since he’s an elf. Tishe finds that there are some very fine woven goods being offered by the humans here. One of them has brought a portable loom, and she can see that the construction and design is rather innovative. She learns that this person worked with the dwarves in the design and that it breaks down and sets up rather quickly (this is a masterwork quality item.)

When it is learned that Velarin, Emrys and Tishe are spell casters you are often asked to “cast some spells.” Anything flashy or explosive is particularly popular!

Barratore, and perhaps others, look at the goods being sold and traded here. There are many utilitarian items as well as some weapons and armor - much of it masterwork, but none of it has magical qualities. The dwarven metal work is intricate. Jewelry tends to be plain, but well made - torques and armbands seem popular. Food stuffs and quality ales are available. There’s a mushroom ale that is a little weird - must be an acquired taste. In addition the textiles that caught Tishe’s eye, there is a human clothier willing to make fitted garments, and a dwarven cobbler. There are also some figurines and crafts, including a couple wonderfully carved chess games. In fact, the craftsman offers to make you a chess game with your group as some of the pieces.

All in all, it’s a rather pleasant two days and a restful two nights. Your popularity garners you new friends and a fair amount of flirtation from some of the men and women here. There’s even a dwarven lass with a lovely beard that batts her eyes at Brom, and Tishe actually gets a marriage proposal from a prosperous weaver!

(OOC: On the Catacombs question, that the nearest one is a few days travel away, back in the Cinnamon Valley. I suppose you could teleport there, but there will be more time later - once this particular mod is completed.

Also, I will defer to you how much game time you want to spend here. We can work through a few things here, or you can return to those trapped doors that guard the dwarven mine you left.)

There is nothing that Tishe’ really wants to have, but she does peruse the vendors and buy knock knacks to bring back as gifts for the local piggies of Magpie Crossing. DM Mark - Farewell to New Friends
Monday January 28th, 2019 12:40:37 AM

The time spent here at this clearing in front of the dwarven stronghold has been pleasant. You learn that Urvan and Yeldarb were part of an adventuring group like yourselves, but certainly never reached your level of renown. Instead, they used their holdings to set up communities of folk in this area. They understand and appreciate that you did not kill the dwarves you brought here, and would be willing to “reabilitate” others you may encounter, should the need arise.

Brom has a good time allowing the warriors to test their mettle against him. To his surprise, a couple of the dwarves and one of the humans actually give him a bit of a challenge. But only a bit.

Edson’s archery skill remains unmatched.

Velain is more than happy to oblige the request for spellcasting demonstrations, and enjoys making things crackle and explode for the spectators there. There’s a tense moment when a small pavilion starts on fire from a stray ember, bit is is soon put out with little harm. Tishe also impresses those there, and her impromptu ice rink is a big hit. She buys a few trinkets in the market.

The morning of the third day, you are all ready to head back. Yeldarb and Urvan tell you that the Keepers of the Vale are always welcome there. They bid you farewell.

Velarin offers to cast a few Teleport spells, and soon you are all standing before the great iron doors. The doors are closed, and lying before the doors is a dead orc.

Tuesday January 29th, 2019 12:29:50 AM

Tishe quickly spots a watcher in what’s left of a nearby abandoned and damaged house, and she discreetly draws an arrow on the ground alerting others to the general direction. As she looks more closely at the dead orc, she can see can see scorch marks (evidently called shirtch marks in these parts.) She can quickly see that this orc wears the raggedy clothing she saw on the orc slaves in the mines, to which he seems to have added some better dwarven clothing.

Emrys also examines the dead orc, and notes the same things Tishe sees. Then he makes the DM lament his weird typo a second time, as he notes the scorch marks on the orc’s skin. Not burns as if from a fire, but very localized burn marks.

Velarin says, "Edson. You have the eyes of an eagle. Would you be so kind as to locate our hidden observer so we can chat. Unless Brom or Barratore wish to play hide and seek with them. It's likely that it's a local villager, and they have probably been keeping an eye on this place since we left. They likely saw what happened as well. The great minotaur chuckles at Velarin’s suggestion that he play hide-and-seek.

With Velarin’s mention of a hidden watcher, and the suggestion that it is probably a local villager, he hears a voice in that direction.

”Yeah, I sees ya. I got a crossbow here too if’n ya come any closer. Yer not marchin us off like you did them dwarves - not without a fight!”

Barratore starts casually walking towards the hidden person and drops his bow and sword as he does so. "Fire that thing and be done with it. I'm coming much much closer to continue this talk. The dwarves will work and integrate with a more noble clan, those they enslaved will now work the mine freely and to their own prosperity. The villages about this place will continue as they have but without the threat of death from those in the mine."

Barratore has had about enough of this. He drops his weapon and walks toward the man in hiding, announcing his intentions. He also explains what you did with the dwarves and why.

Edson sees the minotaur move forward, and stealthy circles around to approach the hiding man from the side. As he does so, he sees there is another villager in there with him, and a third looking on with interest about 100’ away.

Velarin suggests that after finding out what the man knows, that he be sent back to his village to tell the others to expect a visit soon.

Tishe suspects the orc was left outside and tried to get back in.

Emrys considers forcing the corpse to speak, but instead casts Detect Magic. While he suspects magic played a role in the orc’s death, but cannot detect any magic auras lingering on the body.

Brom checks the area and the orc. He does not believe flame played a role in his death as there is little actual burning of the clothing - only a few scorch marks across his skin.

As Barratore approaches he can see that the man is a half-orc, and he shouts nervously, his voice climbing higher as the minotaur moves forward, “Stop or I’ll shoot stop or I’ll shoot stop or I’ll shoot stop or I’ll shoot stop or I’ll shoot.” Finally Barratre is within a few feet. He can see a second villager in there with him, this one is a human but with a hint of orc heritage. Both look pretty terrified.

The second man says, “Strar, jes put the bow down, real slow. If you was gonna shoot, you’d a done it. Yer jes gonna make him mad.” To Barratore he says, ”Look mister, I’m Tavot an we don’t want no trouble.”

Edson moves into position and holds as he can see the minotaur has things under control. He make a mental note of where the third villager is the distance. That one is not trying to hide, and seems keenly interested to see what will happen.

As you ask what happened to the orc, your lean that though the villages near here cannot trust each other, they send folks to watch the door, and to watch each other to make sure no village gets an unfair advantage. They seem to accept Barratores explanation about the dwarves. And they don’t much care about the fate of the dwarves, except how iit will now affect trade.

About the orc, Strar and Tavot respond.

“Uh, About a day ago them doors opened.”
“Ya, and this orc comes out. Then the doors close with a clang. The orc looks around for a bit, gathers some wood an stuff. Then he goes back to the doors and hollers for them to open.”
“Nobody answered. By then it was gettin dark. He drops his stuff and bangs on the door.”
“Ya, an when he does that -CRACK- there’s a loud noise an a flash, an then he’s dead.”
“We was pretty sure he was dead. He didn’t move no more.”
“Uh, can we go?”

Tishe moves the dead orc away from the doors and composes the body. She takes a dagger the orc was wearing and puts it in his hands. She notices the dagger is probably one of the dwarven made weapons.

Velarin pieces together what he happened here. He asks Edson, if he would be so kind as to open the doors again. Without getting "shirtched".

Edson moves up to the doors. He checks the door without actually touching it and detects the trap on the doors is still active. Attempting to disable the trap, after a few moments Edson believes he is successful as he again hears a small humming noise of something powering down. He figures the trap is disabled for about ten minutes. With the doors unlocked and the trap disabled, Edson opens the doors.

The villagers looking on from the nearby abandoned buildings are very interested to see the doors opened without another electric jolt.

As light streams into the large entry room, he sees a couple of orcs with spears pointed in his direction squinting at him. They drop their spears.

“Oh, hey. You guys’re back. Where’s Turken? He never come back in.”
“HEY, DEM GUYS ARE BACK!”

You see several of the other orcs emerge from the darkness.

He says to the Orcs in Orcish as he points to the body of Turken. "You guys forgot to open the doors for Turken. He grabbed the doors trying to get in. Remember that we said the doors had strong death magic on them if you try and open them from that side?"

V moves into the room, and wonders if any of the Keepers actually know anything about metal smithing or mining. Didn't any of these orcs learn anything with decades of slavery?

Edson gets the door and Barratore sighs, poor fellow, apparently they did not know about the trap and unfortunately the Keepers forget to tell them about it. Dying for firewood, just a waste.

"Tishe, V, Emrys, can any of you permanently destroy the trap on these doors?"

Friday February 1st, 2019 12:20:06 PM

Barratore towers over the two villagers. The mouth of the one holding the crossbow hangs open as he cranes his neck to look up at the minotaur. Barratore pushes the crossbow so it points at the ground, and tells the pair to just relax and stay put. They silently nod in response. Barratore returns and tells the others what the villagers told him about the dead orc. Regarding the trap, he says, ”"Tishe, V, Emrys, can any of you permanently destroy the trap on these doors?"

As Edson opens the doors to reveal the orcs you left behind, Velarin speaks to them in Orcish as he points to the body of Turken. "You guys forgot to open the doors for Turken. He grabbed the doors trying to get in. Remember that we said the doors had strong death magic on them if you try and open them from that side?" He steps into the room.

There is some discussion about ways to permanently disable or destroy the trap on the doors. Emrys and Tishe consider destroying the doors themselves to get rid of the trap.

Barratore nods to Tishe, "The villages need to be told about the change in ownership here. We broker the initial meeting and then call it a day. I have no desire to be a king under the mountain."

Barratore wants to head into the village and get the leadership group back together, tell what has happened so far and then get back to the lake. How the orcs and villages go about things going forward is not of much interest to him. Though he will add that he intends to pay the area a visit in 6 months to see how things are.

Monday February 4th, 2019 12:06:03 AM

Tishe is frustrated by the lack of cooperation among the villagers, orcs and even the dwarves the party pulled out of these mines. She adds, “So we are done here. Let’s blow the doors up, take a look at this lake, and leave. “

Barratore snags one of the orcs and tells him to bury or burn his dead comrade. The orc starts to protest, but as he looks up at the minotaur, he thinks better of it. He retrieves some shovels from the mine and barks at a few of the others to help, and the rest to keep an eye on those villagers in case they attack.

Barrtatore continues, "The villages need to be told about the change in ownership here. We broker the initial meeting and then call it a day. I have no desire to be a king under the mountain."

Without further ado, the party makes a trip to the nearest village, passing the weathered obelisk. After some discussion, they are informed of what happened with the dwarves and that a handful of orcs now inhabit the mine. The villagers are skeptical that the mines will produce anything of value. They are also skeptical they’re getting the full story from the party. There is some discussion that that particular village needs to take over the mine before the other rotten villages get to them first.

While similar messages may be delivered to the other villages, the response is much the same. The Keepers begin to get a gnawing feeling they cannot trust any of these villages. Or the orcs. They even begin to wonder if the other member of their own party can be trusted with what has been found here.

You return to the entrance of the mine. You see that the orcs seem to have dug a shallow grave, and the mound suggests there lies Turken. The doors to the mine are open. The orcs are waiting deep in the entryway, squinting warily out as you peer in. You wonder for a moment if they are waiting to ambush you, but brush the thought aside.

V, pondering that disintegrating the door seems logical, hold off until he has a chance to memorize a disintegrate spell. Following the discussions with the villages, V is less certain. "Perhaps we should leave these doors in place. More for the protection of the Orcs than anything else. The villages can't even tolerate and cooperate with each other. They are even less likely to tolerate or work with Orcs unless they are trying to get an advantage on another village. I wouldn't even put it past any of the villages to try and enlist the Orcs to pillage another village. Perhaps letting them remain separate is the best option. I am not very knowledgeable on things such as farming and such. Do any of you know if the Orcs have everything they need to survive long term inside these mines? They should not actually need firewood underground as the warmth is likely to remain constant deeper in."

V waits for any knowledgeable responses from his friends regarding sustainability, but generally hopes that they can instruct the Orcs on how to survive and prosper inside the great doors, and advise them to remain inside.

"When we get to the matter of the lake, I have an idea. While the area is apparently anti-magic, a summoned elemental should remain once it is summoned, even if it goes into an anti magic zone. I have memorized extra summon spells for the purpose of sending out some elementals into the lake for us first to gauge the threat level, and speed our boat to the other side of the lake."

Everyone seems to be done with the villagers and orcs. You’re pretty sure they can’t be trusted. Brom is ready to just just beat the lot of them, if only to give them a common enemy to unite them. With Alemi’s help, he manages to keep his anger under control. Edson is puzzled that the orcs almost seem more receptive to the Keepers than the villagers.

The group decides to not destroy the doors just yet, and they stand open.

You step into the first room of the mines, ready to move forward. Velarin says that if the area beyond the lake continues to block magic, there’s really no point in him going there. He suggests creating elementals to explore the lake, and perhaps shuttle Brom and Barratore across to see if magic still works beyond the lake. Edson agrees.

Tishe says, “Let’s go to the Lake. The elementals are a good idea. Let’s see what happens.” Barratore, Brom and Edson also agree with the plan.

Emrys says, "It wouldn't hurt to send my Prying Eyes into the lake. If none return that nothing is really lost ... other than the opportunity to learn the lore from a safe distance." Then he casts Greater Prying Eyes. Seventeen floating eyes appear around him, each about the size of a small apple. The slick, round orbs look unblinkingly at him Emrys as he instructs them eyes to go into the lake. Since they possess his knowledge about the mines they move off to explore as instructed.

As the eyes disappear into the darkness, the orcs stare in shocked horror at a bunch of floating eyeballs. They say nothing, but give the Keepers a wide berth as they go past.

Through the various rooms you all move into the mines, following the path the eyes likely took. Eventually you arrive at the lake. As you do, you see Emrys’ eyes begin to move across and into the lake. But before they even reach the water, they begin to wink out one-by-one. Emrys manages to pull the remaining 10 eyes back before they too disappear.

The air is still. Faint echoes of the sounds of your group suggest a vast chamber occupied by the lake. As you noticed before, there are rickety looking boats and rafts near the shore with oars, and while not stellar work they should be seaworthy. The two boats each hold two to four people of medium size. There are also two large rafts that would hold ten each.

Darkness and water stretch before you.

Either that or have them probe the far edges of the the antimagic lake to see if the entirety is anti magical."

V then casts summon monster 6 in the non anti magic area near the lake, and awaits the 3 medium water elementals that appear. He then instructs them in Aquan. He instructs 1 of them to quickly go across the middle of the lake, see how far it is to the other side, and what's there, and then return and report. He instructs the other 2 to quickly check out the lake to the sides of where the first one will be for dangers or things underwater that are not natural and return and report back.

V sends them off and then waits for them to return and report, looking out over the lake for any signs of trouble.

Tishe’ is disappointed but not surprised as Emrys’ ‘eyes’ also wink out when they are above the water. “It is an anti-magic area, not just the water, but it can’t go on forever.”

Visibly overcoming her own fears of drowning, she looks at the Minotaur. “Sieur Barratorre, do you think between our mutual knowledge we can select the best canoes and rafts to carry the six of us, plus bring a couple more in case one sinks?”

She goes to the boats and rafts to use her sailing knowledge to pick three boats and two rafts that would be best. “It is a good thing I weaves for a time with the Black Lions pack around Bonetown,” she muses,” to get used to so much water in one place.”

Velarin has some suggestions about where Emrys can send it floating eyes. The he summons three water elementals, instructing all three to explore the lake from different directions. As they all move forward our over and near the water they each blink out of existence.

Emrys sends his remaining eyes away from the lake to search out the mines and caverns, telling them "If any of you spy a dwarf, golem or fungal creature, return to me at once." The orbs zip off back up the tunnel you traveled to get to this lake.

Tishe asks Barratore the help her select the most seaworthy of the boats and rafts there. Then she falls back on the skills she developed as one of the Black Lions in Bonetown. Her sailing skills prove useful even in this underground environment, and she determines that all the craft there are sturdy and seaworthy.

Barratore picks up some mundane means of providing light. Once there he checks the boats and rafts out with Tishe, and confirms what she found - that they all seem to be in decent shape.

Edison, however, looks these craft over with a practiced eye. He notices that the closest boats is in fact trapped. A devilishly clever trap, the boat is set with a trap door. He determines that there is a thin cord beneath the boat such that perhaps a hundred feet out or so, the cord would trigger the trap door and cause that boat to sink. He checks the other boats and rafts well, and determines there are no traps associated with them - just the one boat has a trap.

You can tell that your voices carry across the water from the garbled echoes that return to you. The dark, silent lake stretches before you.

V frowns and curses mentally as the elementals vanish. The Wizard then looks hesitantly at the boats and the lake. He takes many long moments deep in thought, pondering both drowning and the fact that without magic, he is virtually useless to the group and likely a hindrance in any situation.

He stands there looking quite unsure until the point that the others look in his direction, at which point his shoulders sag, he secures all his equipment, and slowly shuffles to the selected boat and gets in. "Drowning is not a good way to die" he mumbles as he gets in and sits down where directed.

“Good eye, Sieur Edson!”, Tishe’ says admiringly. “We know the dwarves used these boats and can assume the ones on the other side will be willing to speak with whoever comes without immediate aggression. I hope.”

Tishe’ does another experiment. The Sorceress moves towards the water until her Endure Elements and Private Sanctum spells wink out, then she moves away from the lake to determine if the effect is spell ‘suppression’ like an anti-magic shell, or full on dispelled.

After telling the others of her findings, Tishe’ moves to a boat Velarin is NOT in and takes the oars: spreading out the ineffective spellcasters to be rowers while Brom and Edson could do the fighting if needed.

Once the non-trapped 2 boats and one raft are manned, she pushes off and starts stroking across the lake.

(Knowledge [Arcana]: 46, to better determine what is happening in this lake.)

"That's a good question, Barratore. I believe after observing our little experiments with Prying Eyes and Elementals, it's clear to me that the lake is what we expected it to be.. an Antimagic Field. Elementals are normally not affected by Antimagic, unless they are summoned. The magic keeping them in this realm is simply suppressed ... not destroyed. If this antimagic quality of the lake were to end right now ... the Eyes and Elementals would reappear."

Emrys pauses for a moment, then says, "Another good question is 'Why?' What is the purpose of this lake? There must be a very good reason for an underground lake that suppresses magic. Would be a very excellent prison for a magical aquatic beast! A creature native to the Living Wold as well... no, this wouldn't hold an Outsider. No something from the Underwold is more like it. Something from the dark side!"

Velarin is disappointed as his elementals disappear. Nonetheless, he screws up his courage and takes a seat in one of the boats, hoping he will avoid a watery death.

Congratulating Edson on his sharp eyes, Tishe moves to the lake to see if her magic is dispelled or suppressed near the lake. As she backs up, she is relieved to see that her magics seem to return. Satisfied that she knows what she’s dealing with, she take a rowing position in another boat. Tishe shares her conclusion that this seems to suppress and not destroy magic.

Barratore performs his own experiment, and likewise finds that magics here are only suppressed and return once you are away from the lake.

Edson disables the trap on the boat. The trap door in the boat remains, but he’s pretty sure it won’t sink the boat. Pretty sure.

Emrys carefully considers what is happening, and concludes this seems to behave like an Antimagic Field, though the extent of the effect is not clear.

Eventually, everyone piles into the two boats that were not trapped and one of the rafts, and you move out onto the lake. Barratore’s thoughtfulness in bringing some mundane light sources is helpful, and they seem to push back the darkness in a circle around you as you go. The silence here is broken only be the quiet splash of your oars. You move across the dark water, your echoes suggesting a vast chamber, an area that is beyond the range of your lights.

Eventually, you see glints of light ahead. As you approach, you see the glints are from a large crystalline chamber before you. Your lights are not enough to fill this area, but from the reflections you’d estimate it’s maybe 200’ wide and 100’ deep.

The ripples in the water created by your approaching boats lap gently at steps made of some strange purple crystalline material shot through with red mottling. The crystalline steps rise from the water to a floor a few feet above the water level. You can see there is some debris on this floor as it stretches away from you.

You hear a voice ahead of you somewhere in the dark crystalline chamber. Wait, are you actually hearing that, or is it a voice in your head? Or both?

“Yoooou haaave nooottt beeeeen suuumoooned, aaand yoooouuu haaavvvve nnnooot caaaalllled thoooossse beeeelowwww. Iiiinteeeresssting. Whoooo are yooouuu, aaand wwwwhyyyy arrrre youuuu heeeeereeee?”

Velarin hears the voice in the dark up ahead, and whispers to Brom, ”Until I have some magic back, I'm on your heels like a callous. Let's get off this boat and move away from the water asap before an answer is demanded."

Tishe carefully steps out of the boat. A few feet away from the water, she feels a bit warmer as the comforting feel of her Endure Elements kicks back in. In response to the voice she answers, “I am Tishe’, a member of the Keepers of the Vale. We have removed the dwarves and the orcs felt there was danger across the lake. So we came to assess if either your power or that of the dwellers below posed a danger to the people of the mines or surface.”

Edson move out and tries to hide in the shadowy area at the edge of the torch light.

As Tishe and Edson move forward they begin to see skeletal remains scattered about, and some of these bones seem clad in armor, weapons still near their lifeless hands. Other gear is scattered about among the bones. The air is still and cool here, the echoes from your speaking and movement suggest the size of this place.

”Yoooouuuu sayyyyyyyyyyyyy yooooouuuuu haaaave reeeemooooved theeee dwaaaarvessss. Verrrry innnnnterrrressssting.”

(I’ll spare you all the extra letters from here on out, but this voice seems to speak slowly, the words being drawn out in a rather strange way. And yeah, you’re pretty sure this voice is only in your head. Weird.)

“To where did you remove them and how did you remove them? Are they dead? Do you replace them? You were not called. Or do you come like others to this ancient place to pillage and destroy, this place that was ancient before the ancient things? You ask about danger to the people in the mines or above. I pose them no danger. I am here. I am now and will be again. I do not speak for anyone else.

“Are you warriors or scholars? Do you claim to master the arcane arts or draw on divine power provided by whatever current gods hold sway?”

Here is your Map. If you step out of the boat, either move yourselves on the map, or let me know where you go. Bear in mind, the only lights here are mundane light still on the boats and raft, and they provide normal light to 20’ and 40’, or double that for Emrys and Edson.

“We are glad to know you are no danger to the mortals in the mines and villages. However, I ask knowledge for knowledge Ancient One. For we have questions as well, and we can provide you with what we know for your questions.” She takes a deep breath and begins. “Only those dwarfs that fell in battle were slain. Some we captured and kept safe, bringing them to another community on the surface of the Wold and away from this mountain where they can learn to cooperate instead of dominate.”

The Sorceress pauses and continues. “Now your turn?”, she asks in a hopeful question. “Who are the Dwellers Below and are they servants or enemies of you?”

If the MindVoice agrees to the tit-for-tat questions and answers, Tishe’ plans to cooperate (unless another Keeper has a serious objection), but only if the Voice answers their questions too.

Barratore brings a light from the raft and moves up next to Tishe. Even then his mundane flame only reaches so far and the walls remain hidden to him. Brom moves up as well. You can now see skeletal remains here and there on the floor, reflections in the darkness ahead suggesting more.

Tishe is a bit awed by the voice in her head. She relates what happened to the dwarves, and then she decides to bargain with the voice. She asks about the dwellers below, agreeing to provide information only if her questions are answered. The voice then answers some questions, and gets her answers in return.

The voice responds, again in a slow, drawn-out style of speaking. In your heads you hear, ”Ah, a game. Those below? You are as they once were. But they understand this place. They are no allies of mine, and enemies mean nothing to me. You say that might serves right and protects those that cannot protect themselves? Interesting. Might served those here, but poorly as you can see. Look around you. This is an ancient place by your standards with ancient walls, and yet you stand in darkness. Darkness in your eyes. Darkness in your minds.”

Edson is apprehensive and ready, hiding in the darkness. The closer light from the raft reveals some details in the walls nearby. Edson can make out vague outlines of strange creatures carved into the walls. Large figures glare down at him, some angular and lanky, some flying, some tentacled, caved into a purplish crystal shot through with red here and there. The far walls and the room ahead remain hidden though.

Velarin steps off the boat into land. He can also see some vague, disturbing shapes carved into the walls, as can Emrys.

The Bloodwitch moves up and says, ”"Yes, I am many things ... a scholar is one of them. My name is Emrys Myrridanmyl. I claim not a master of the arcane or divine, but I strive to grow and ripen in its garden. My master, the ancient Culverwood, was a witness to creation ... and we endure to watch it still. May I inquire to who you may be?"

The voice answers, ”Who am I? Ancient as you say, but only a moment. I am eternity and instant. I am here and now.”

“WHY are you here? WHY have you come? WHAT do you want? Some of you seem to be mute or not intelligent enough to form words. If you do not know, you are fit for little else than to close your eyes and march into the lake. If you do not know, you are as irrelevant as the dead you see before you. If you do not know, you may as well remain mortal in which case it matters little when death takes you.”

We came to help those in the mines and villages to be free to make their own lives without fear or enslavement.”

“What call do you speak of? Is it your call? Is it the obelisk and selfishness that seems to permeate the stones on the surface?”

She shifts her stance to start looking around, careful to not get caught by surprise in this dangerous place.

Barratore remains silent, he feels no need to answer, no need to justify himself to some creatures claims of eternity just because it has telepathic abilities. The darkness does not other him, nor the tone of death and fleeting moments. It was what it meant to be mortal, to have fleeting moments. Only the gift of mortality can allow for the grand illusion of love, hope, of accomplishment, all things of joy to be. Those who do not have such a perception know all things turn to ash and therefore cannot take part in any joys of existence to begin with. Barratore found his thoughts turning to ones of pity for this creature

Edson begins getting nervous. The carvings where alarming, and this all seemed a set up. He continues moving along the wall, looking at more carvings and any potential ambushes.

Brom doesn't reply to the mental questions from the darkness. He didn't fear death. It comes to all of us one day. This being was most likely undead, if he had to guess. Perhaps it would be the fight he longed for.

Tishe casts a Light spell on a coin. It provides similar illumination than Barratores torch next to her. All is still dark beyond her as she speaks. ”“Why are we here? We are the Keepers of the Vale, a group of mortals who protect other free people. We are the shield behind which they can prosper. We did not hear a call, we came not to destroy. We came to help those in the mines and villages to be free to make their own lives without fear or enslavement. What call do you speak of? Is it your call? Is it the obelisk and selfishness that seems to permeate the stones on the surface?”

Velarin moves in the direction Edson went before he vanished. He pulls out a Darkvision wand and uses it. He can see the nearby wall is a purplish crystal shot through with red here and there, and carved with images of strange creatures glaring at him, some angular and lanky, some flying, some tentacled. And there are some glyphs or figures woven in that he’s never seen before.

Edson finds the carvings disturbing and this feels like a set up to him. (I missed the fact that Edson was moving, but my oversight is about to turn out to be in his favor.)

Barratore and Brom remain stoic and silent. Barratore feels a strange sort of pity for the creature speaking in his head. Brom just wants a fight.

On a more personal note, Emrys responds, “You ask why we are here? I saw this place in a vision. To finally look upon this place with my own eyes is simply too irresistible for my curiosity. Do you know why I was shown this place?"

The voice answers, ”I do not know why you were shown this place, but I do know that is … unfortunate. Our time has come to an end.”

It’s about this time that you begin to see and hear movement in the room. While only a few opponents are visible, you hear wings in the air and the plodding of large creatures coming your way. Nearby, you see a large creature and a couple of small flying creatures emerge from the carvings in the wall. Others are moving forward as well. All the creatures are composed of purplish crystal. Two of the smaller bat-like creatures cling to the wall about 20’ up, the rest fly about 20’ up.

A large creature steps forward to attack Velarin. As it moves past the hidden Edson, it opens itself up to an attack of opportunity from the Rogue. Its razor sharp claws slice Velarin for 13 damage plus an additional 5 bleeding damage.

Here is your Map.

On the map:
S= A medium creature seemingly made of purplish crystal. It has bat-like head and wings with long spiky legs.
M= A large creature composed of purplish crystal over 12 feet tall. Powerful arms and legs end in razor-sharp claws like polished steel. It seems to have a rounded head with two sunken crystalline eyes and a gaping toothless maw.

Please do your best to base your actions on the the lighting/sight you would have. For instance, Velarin has darkvision out to 60’ from where he is. Each boat, Barratore and Tishe have a light source that provides normal light to 20’ and dim light (concealment, 20% miss chance) out to 40’.

Velarin's relief at magic now functioning is quickly countered by a razor sharp claw attack. "Wonderful. Our standard greeting by those we don't know. Some of us need to work on our personality."

V takes a 5' step to allow his lightning bolt to effect the M1 that attacked him, and the S2 coming out of the wall at BC20. He then casts on the defensive(concentration check 34) and sends an empowered lightning bolt through the pair of them(62 damage, reflex save 24 for 31 damage). V then calls forth his quicken rod from his haversack.

"If someone can be so kind as to remove my melee opponent here, I can start calling out some locations of the bad guys within 60' as well as patterns and strays."

The Sorceress takes a careful look by the boats, looking for any water creatures arriving.

Velarin get hit, and decides to return the favor. He steps back and lets loose an empowered Lightning Bolt through the large crystalline creature that hit him, catching a flying one at the same time. He watches satisfyingly as lightning arcs through both, though the flying creature dodges some of the damage. Then he pulls out a quicken rod from his haversack, asking for someone to take out the crystal mountain in front of him. Velarin takes another 6 damage from his bleeding wound.

Tishe casts Darkvision on Barratore and Brom, and takes a quick look to the boats only to see two of the winged crystalline creatures has moved over there and is pulling the the boats back out into the water.

Emrys casts Spectral Hand and True Seeing . As he does so, additional foes come into vision. Then he moves to the left of Brom. near Barratore, ready to deal some damage.

Barratore moves up and hits his foe! Brom likewise moves up, ready to deal some damage.

The creatures attack.

One of the large creatures hits Barratore once for 15 damage and 2 bleeding. The second large creature moved up to Barratore and strikes him for 22 damage.

Two of the flying creatures seem to concentrate for a moment, and then they fly up and touch Tishe and Emrys. Tishe takes 50 points of damage (Slay Living, DC 18 Fort save for half). Emrys takes 48 points of damage (Slay Living, DC 18 Fort save for half).

As this happens, the other flying creatures move up. Silent black rays spring from three of them. Velarin is hit and takes 1 negative level, Brom is hit and take 3 negative levels, and Barratore is hit and takes 3 negative levels. (Evervation)

Finally, Velarin, Emrys and Tishe must make a DC 15 Will save or be affected by Silence cast on them.

“Piggies!”, curses Tishe’ as the effect of the flying creature racks her body. “I hope the black handed treadles can’t do that a lot!” She resists some of the Spell, but the coldness seeped into her bones, giving a chill of premonition. “We weren’t called?”, she asks rhetorically, then answers her own question. “Yeah, we get that a lot.”

“More creatures are taking the boats”, she calls grimly. There is nothing she can do about the boats, her Magic’s would fizzle as soon as they got near the water. So concentrate on the beings that are trying to kill her and Emrys, and the shadowy creatures at the edge of her vision.

“Anyone know any weaknesses? Have read about these things before?”

V shakes off the silence spell cast upon him(save 33) and quickly looks about to see the damage being done. "Looks like I may have to let loose a little. These guys are serious."

(most of the S creatures are not on the map. not sure if you just didn't add them, or they aren't in anyone's visual. As a result, I will let you determine the most beneficial target for V's spells to get the most numbers of bad guys.)

V casts an empowered chain lightning spell, picking a target central to numerous other bad guys, and lets it fly, striking that target, and all within 30 feet of it. (96 damage. reflex save 29 for primary, and 27 for secondary targets for 48 damage)

V then uses his quicken rod to cast a quickened haste on himself and everyone within 30' of him which gets everyone except Emrys(sorry Stephen)

V also calls out out general locations of bad guys as best he is able to those without darkvision. "Alright Boys and Girls. Let's work together. Myself and the Fighters have mostly offense. Emrys, you are the only one with any healing if you can do anything about the negative levels or damage. This could get ugly quick if they all start throwing those Slay Livings and enervations, so if you can try to keep people from getting too torn up, that would be lovely. Nice call on the darkvisions for Brom and Barratore Tishe'. Let's not become the next corpses on the floor"

Emrys feels the familiar, chilling touch of necromancy, but he is able to fight off the full effects with his vitality. He does a quick survey of crystalline creature in front of him. He hopes the pummeling it received by Tishe's attacks was enough to finish him. However he proceeds with caution as he can now see all the other creatures joining the fight.

Emrys tries a bit of daring. He activates his supernatural ability (Bramble Armor ability, free action) and long prickly thorns spring from his wooden skin. He then slides to the right (5ft Step) and attempts to return the favor with his own dark magic.

Tishe’ feels the spell take effect, although not fully, and she concentrates on the shadowy creatures at the edge of her vision. He then casts haste on himself and everyone except Emrys. {ooc: I will put your knowledge checks in the email}

Edson’s blades fly but none of his attack pierce the tough body of the creature. {ooc: All missed}

Barratore is short on words but long on action. He swings and swings connecting with four of his five attacks. As the blows land you can see that each takes a terrible toll on the creature. The final strike comes in low and severs a leg clean off the creature and it dies as it falls. {Moved your attacks to M2 so Brom could finish M1}

Emrys fights off the full effects of the attack and activates a sort of natural protection that covers him in long thorns. That done he casts an amazingly effective spell that exhausts many of the creatures. This is followed by a spell of protection on Barratore and moving away from the attackers.

Brom, like Barratore, keeps his actions simple and unloads on the closest elemental. His final blow proves to be all the creature can take and it crumbles to the ground losing whatever life forces animated it.

One of the smaller creatures closes the short distance to Edson and its hand glows with a black sickly energy. {Inflict Serious Wounds - Hit vs Touch: 24 | Dam 23 | DC16 for Half}

Another (S2) launches another silent black ray at Barratore before it moves off into the darkness. {hit: 21 | 4 Negative Levels}

One of the remaining large creatures, not having yet been negatively impacted, closes the distance on Emrys and lashes out with a clawed arm at the caster. {Hit: 34 Dam: 18 +6 Bleed}

The final large creature, that you can see, advances on the party.

The medium creatures that had gone to the boats have succeded in sending two of the away from the shore.

The first creature falls and he notes Brom has taken a second. With V's Haste spell upon him, Barratore dismisses the Torc Haste power. Emrys' Deathward cloaks his body and he feels renewed as the negative levels are suppressed by the spell and he grins a bit as the next attack is deflected by the protection as well.

Barratore moves forward and left (Towards M4) bringing his sword in with a mighty thrust into its chest.

Emrys is feeling the hurt. He wants to help the others, but if he goes down, no one gets healed. So self preservation takes over. He takes another step back (5ft Step to AO29) and with his Rod of the Quckening he casts a power cure spell on himself too quickly for the large elemental to react.

Sceaduinar are the smaller creatures. Their very flesh causes negative energy damage. They can cast dimension door at will and enervation and inflict serious wounds a few times a day. Immune to cold, death, disease, energy drain and poison. Resist sonic, acid and electric"

"I think it's time for flying reinforcements Gentlemen"

Baratore shakes off the negative effects of the previous attacks thanks to Emrys’s spell. He moves forward to engage one of the larger creatures and scores another heavy hit.

Tishe’ backs away from her attacker and fires first one and then two groups of magic missiles at the sceaduinar. The second set drops it to the ground dead.

Edson holds his ground and continues to attack the sceaduinar off to the east side of the cavern.

Hurting Emrys wants to help his team but knows that if he goes down there is no more healing magic. He backs away to get some space but the large creature can still lashes out with its long reaching arms. {Hit: 35 Dam: 18 +5 Bleed} Despite taking the damage he manages to heal himself, negating much of what just happened, before quickly casting death wad on Brom.

Velarin calls out what he knows of the creatures before casting mirror image on himself before he begins summoning reinforcements.

Brom charges across the room to aid Velarin and lands a hefty strike on the crystallis.

As the crystallis is struck it blows out a big ‘breath’ of orange smoke that encompasses both Brom and Emrys. DC22 Fort Failure please read Highlight to display spoiler: { A living creature caught in the cloud must succeed on a DC 22 Fortitude save or turn into a crystal, gem-encrusted statue. The other remaining crystallis stands toe to toe with Barratore. It does not go well for it as all of its attacks fail to find their mark.

One of the flyers moves the short distance to the raft and begins to pull it away from shore while the others moves in to attack Emrys with its teeth. The jaws snap just short of the casters face.

To the north one of the flyers (S2) moves towards Tishe’ and casts one of its innate magics. DC16 Will vs Silence.

Another of the fliers (s8) disappears from where it was flying and quickly pops back into existence near Edson. {ooc: Dimension door}

The final northern flyer closes on Barratore, its hand wreathed in black energy as it tries to touch him. {Hit 28 vs Touch | DC18 Fort | No save: 47 Dam | Save: 17 Dam}

The flier squaring off with Edson, back to the wall, attacks with teeth and claws but misses with all of its attacks.

Finally, the voice you had heard before echos in your heads again. “Toooo looonnng oooout ooooff tiiimeee.” with that it grows brighter and you can see it is building additional energies into itself.

Holding his ground Brom swings and swings eventually bringing the crystal and stone creature low.

Velarin finishes his casting and five air elementals appear around the sceaduinar. The area is buffeted in wind and even Edson hair is moved about some. The swing a bunch and connect about half of the time. The sceaduinar are tough though and most of the damage is shrugged off. {DR10/adamantine} He follows the elemental summoning with some rays of scorching heat causing the exact damage it would take to end the sceaduinar harassing Emrys.

Emrys takes a step back and sees his foe taken down but beam after beam of heat. The immediate threat gone he turns and banishes one of the others. (S6} Sadly it already did one of the things it wanted to do and the raft is drifting away. Once the banish is complete ha casts another healing spell on himself.

Edson, now surrounded by friendly elementals continue to attack but cannot do enough damage to penetrate the creatures hide.

Barratore steps back and swings multiple times at the crystal creature, taking off huge chunks, but does not quite do enough to kill it. It is badly hurt but not quite dead!

Badly injured the creature blows out a big ‘breath’ of orange smoke that encompasses both Barratore. DC22 Fort Failure please read Highlight to display spoiler: { A living creature caught in the cloud must succeed on a DC 22 Fortitude save or turn into a crystal, gem-encrusted statue. If I moved you to the wrong spot it would also take a 5ft step.}

Tishe attempts to trap S2 but it manages to avoid the foce bubble. {Ref: 22}
Trapped one of the sceaduinar (S2) activates dimension door and appears beside Emrys. This move is repeated by another (S10) that sees Barratore as to much to handle. Well it attempts to repeat but draws an attack of opportunity from Barratore that ends its existence.

The cloud of yellow vapor finishes whatever it was doing and a second, smaller, cloud of vapor near Emrys. The new cloud acts, trying to slam the caster twice. {Hit: 25/27 Dam: 4/8} {ooc: The d6 roll picked who this creature appeared next too.

As the small cloud appears the same voice speaks. “Dissssssaaapoointing, ooonly ooone.”

S1 continues its battle with Edson teeth snapping and claws flashing but none can connect.

Finally the golden cloud moves down, closer you can see it is made of yellow and red dust and vapor. As it moves it glows again and four more of these creatures springs up around Barratore.
